Summary. Our objective was to identify sex pheromone
components of the oak processionary moth, Thaumetopoea
processionea (Lepidoptera: Thaumetopoeidae), whose larvae
defoliate oak, Quercus spp., forests in Eurasia and impact
human health. Coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic
detection (GC-EAD) and GC-mass spectrometric
(MS) analyses of pheromone gland extract of female
T. processionea revealed two consistently EAD-active compounds.
They were identified as (Z,Z)-11,13-hexadecadienyl
acetate (Z11,Z13-16:OAc) and (Z,E)-11,13,15-hexadecatrienyl
acetate (Z11,E13,15-16:OAc) by comparative GC,
GC-MS and GC-EAD analyses of insect-produced compounds
and authentic standards. In replicated field experiments
(2000, 2001) in Nordbaden, Südbaden and Sachsen-Anhalt
(Germany), Z11,Z13-16:OAc and Z11,E13,15-16:OAc in
combination, but not singly, attracted significant numbers of
male moths. It will now be intriguing to investigate whether
Z11,E13,15-16:OAc, or its corresponding alcohol or aldehyde,
serves as a pheromone component also in other species of
the Thaumetopoeidae. 相似文献

Summary. Both male and female Holotrichia loochooana
loochooana (Sawada) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) were
attracted with female-produced pheromone, anthranilic acid
(2-aminobenzoic acid), in the field. Male chafers were
observed to apparently directly locate cotton balls impregnated
with 1 to 10 mg of pheromone. In contrast, females never
directly oriented to the treated balls but landed 0.2-1.5 m
away and exposed their abdominal glands in a calling posture,
which occasionally resulted in aggregation of both females
and males. This suggested the mating aggregation of this
species could be primarily induced by pheromone released by
females. A hypothesis for adaptability of female aggregation
is proposed and discussed. 相似文献

New repellent semiochemicals for three species of
<Emphasis Type="Italic">Dendroctonus</Emphasis> (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary. Nine compounds identified from captured
volatiles of the Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae,
the mountain pine beetle, D. ponderosae, and the
spruce beetle, D. rufipennis, that elicited antennal responses
in males and females of one or more of these species were
tested in the field to determine behavioural activity.
1-Octen-3-ol, found in the volatiles of females of all three
species decreased the response of male and female coastal
and male interior D. pseudotsugae and both sexes of D. ponderosae
to their aggregation pheromones. Acetophenone,
identified in the volatiles of females of all three species,
significantly decreased the response of interior female
D. pseudotsugae. trans-Verbenol, a potent aggregation
pheromone of D. ponderosae, decreased the response of both
sexes of D. pseudotsugae, while 3-methyl-2-cyclohexen-1-
one (MCH), the antiaggregation pheromone of D. pseudotsugae
and D. rufipennis decreased the response of both sexes
of D. ponderosae. While it has been demonstrated that semiochemical
mediated interspecific communication occurs
among bark beetles infesting the same host, this study
demonstrates that beetles can perceive signals emitted by
heterospecifics attacking nonhosts and can potentially use
them to avoid attacking the wrong species of conifer. 相似文献

Senders and receivers influence dynamic characteristics of the signals used for mate attraction over different time scales.
On a moment-to-moment basis, interactions among senders competing for a mate influence dynamic characteristics, whereas the
preferences of receivers of the opposite gender exert an influence over evolutionary time. We observed and recorded the calling
patterns of the bird-voiced treefrog Hyla avivoca to assess how the dynamic characters of calls vary during interactions among groups of males in a chorus. This question was
also addressed using playback experiments with males. Playback experiments with females showed how changes in dynamic call
properties are likely to affect male mating success. Frogs calling in pairs, groups, or in response to playbacks produced
longer calls than did isolated males. During call overlap, males often increased the duration of the silent interval (gaps)
between the pulses of their calls so that the pulses of the calls of two neighbors interdigitated. This change resulted in
increased variability of pulse rate, a traditionally static acoustic property; however, males also produced high proportions
of non-overlapped calls in which variability in pulse rate was low and had species-typical values. Females preferred long
calls to short- and average-duration calls, and non-overlapped calls to overlapped calls. Given a choice between pairs of
overlapped calls, females preferred pairs in which the proportion of overlap was low and pairs in which the pulses of such
calls interdigitated completely. The observed patterns of vocal competition thus reflect the preferences of conspecific females,
which have influenced the evolution of the calling behavior of H. avivoca.

Summary. Three components that elicited antennal response from male Choristoneura conflictana were found from female gland extracts analyzed using a coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detector system.
The main component in gland extracts was (Z)-11-tetradecenal (Z11-14:Ald). Two minor components also elicited antennal response: (E)11-tetradecenal (E11-14:Ald) and (Z)-11- tetradecen-1-ol (Z11-14:OH). Analysis of effluvia indicated that calling virgin females release mostly Z11-14:Ald and trace amounts of Z11-14:OH. Field and wind tunnel behavioral studies showed that Z11-14:Ald alone attracted male moths in a dose response pattern. Tests comparing male response to blends of components detected
in gland extracts showed that addition of 1.8% of E11-14:Ald to Z11-14:Ald did not influence male moths in the wind tunnel, but resulted in significantly lower trap captures in the field.
The threecomponent blend [Z11-14:Ald (100), E11-14:Ald (1.8), Z11-14:OH (11)], was less attractive than Z11-14:Ald alone in both field and wind tunnel studies. Traps baited with two virgin female moths were equally attractive to
males as traps baited with the three-component synthetic blend but less attractive than traps baited with Z11-14:Ald alone. Field tests of various blends of the two components (Z11-14:Ald, Z11-14:OH) detected in the females’ effluvia showed that the addition of 1–10% Z11-14:OH to Z11-14:Ald did not affect the males’ response to Z11-14:Ald. Our data demonstrate that female C. conflictana release sex pheromone components in a different ratio than they are stored in the pheromone gland. The sex pheromone is comprised
of a single component, Z11-14:Ald, that can be used to monitor mated and virgin male C. conflictana throughout their flight period. 相似文献

Summary. The major component of the trail pheromone of
the myrmicine ant Crematogaster castanea
has been identified as (R)-2-dodecanol from
the tibial glands of the hind legs. The substance gave activity comparable to the
contents of 8 tibial glands at a concentration of 1 pg per 32 cm trail. 相似文献

Many species base their choice of mates on multiple signals which provide them with different kinds of information. Choosers
may assess the signals together to evaluate the overall quality of potential mates, but individuals often pay attention to
different signals in different contexts. In Rhinogobius brunneus, a fish displaying exclusive male parental care, females generally prefer males showing larger first dorsal fins (FDF) and
more active courtship displays as mates. Females choosing a mate usually initially assess the FDF and later utilize courtship
for the final decision. In our experiments, females with different hunger states used different signals when selecting mates.
Females in both hunger states preferred males with larger FDF in the first stage. In the second stage, well-fed females showed
highly repeatable choice, whereas poorly fed females responded only to variation in the courtship activity of males. The males
preferred by poorly fed females exhibited significantly higher offspring survival than nonpreferred males. Under conditions
of food shortage, males allocate more energy to future reproduction at the expense of the present brood, and females may prioritize
signals predictive of offspring survivorship over signals reflecting other aspects in male quality to minimize the losses
in direct benefits. We conclude that R. brunneus females may employ information from both signals but dynamically adjust their prioritization of each signal to current conditions
to ensure the choice that is currently most adaptive. 相似文献

Summary. The basic chemical structure of the sex
pheromone of the pine sawfly Microdiprion pallipes
(Fallén) has earlier been identified as the propionate
ester of (2S,3S,7R/S,11R/S)/(2R,3R,7R/S,11R/S)-3,7,11-
trimethyl-2-tridecanol. We now report the results from
further investigations on the male response to individual
stereoisomers and to blends of stereoisomers, both in electroantennographic
(EAG) recordings and in field trapping
experiments. We also present our attempts to determine the
stereochemistry of the compounds present in females of
M. pallipes. By comparing gas chromatograms and mass
spectra obtained from natural extracts with those from synthetic
compounds it was found that the females contain one
or more of the four (2S,3S,7R/S,11R/S)-3,7,11-trimethyl-2-
tridecanol isomers (SS++-1). The active pheromone component
is the corresponding propionate ester 2. In EAG
experiments, males responded most strongly to five propionate
ester samples, namely two four-isomer blends: SS++-2
and SR++-2, and three individual stereoisomers: SSSR-,
SRRR- and SRSR-2. In a series of field trapping experiments
it was found that males were attracted to the SR++-2
four-isomer blend and to the individual isomer SSSR-2.
Based on the EAG-recordings and field responses of males
and the stereoisomers found in the females, we suggest that
the propionate ester of (2S,3S,7S,11R)-3,7,11-trimethyl-2-
tridecanol (SSSR-2) is used as a main component of the sex
pheromone in M. pallipes. Apparently the males react to
other stereoisomers in addition to that or those produced by
the females. 相似文献

Sexual selection in most vertebrates is based on the evolution of fitness optimization strategies such as multiple-male mating
(MMM). Several ecological correlates of MMM have been identified in bird and fish populations; however, only few studies have
documented the effects of environmental change on promiscuity in mammals. In this study, the 127 pregnant females from four
central European and ecologically diverse species of field mice (genus Apodemus) were studied to assess the role of ecological factors that may have shaped the evolution of particular mating systems. MMM
was found in all analyzed species: in Apodemus uralensis and Apodemus flavicollis, up to two males could be identified as the fathers of a particular litter, while three males sired 9.1% of analyzed litters
of Apodemus sylvaticus and 20.6% of Apodemus agrarius. Furthermore, there were obvious differences between species in relative testes size and the proportion of multiple sired
litters during those seasons when the opportunity for multiple mating was high. The species with the smallest testes and the
least promiscuous was A. uralensis (only 43.5% of multiple sired litters), while the species with the biggest testes and the most promiscuous was A. agrarius (69.2%). MMM was significantly associated with higher litter size in A. flavicollis, and the probability of MMM strongly increased with season in A. agrarius and with abundance in A. uralensis. These results indicate that ecological factors are associated with MMM rates in Apodemus field mice and more research is needed to fully understand the evolution of mating strategies at different levels of biological
resolution. 相似文献

Summary. The sex pheromone of Ostrinia orientalis
(Lepidoptera: Crambidae) was analyzed by gas chromatography–electroantennographic detection (GC–EAD), GC–mass spectrometry and a series of bioassays. Three EAD-active
compounds were detected in the female sex pheromone
gland extract, and identified as tetradecyl acetate (14:OAc),
(Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (Z11-14:OAc) and (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (E11-14:OAc). The titers (ratio) of 14:OAc, Z11-14:OAc and
E11-14:OAc in 3-day-old virgin
females were 0.49 ng (10), 4.86 ng (98) and 0.10 ng (2),
respectively. In a wind-tunnel bioassay, the 98:2 blend of
Z11- and E11-14:OAc, but not Z11-14:OAc alone, elicited
the same male behavioral responses as virgin females and
crude gland extracts. 14:OAc was inactive by itself, and did
not show any synergistic effect on the binary blend.
Field trapping experiments also confirmed the attractiveness
of the binary blend to O. orientalis
males. Based on
these results, we concluded that the sex pheromone of
O. orientalis
is a 98:2 mixture of Z11-14:OAc and
E11-14:OAc. This sex pheromone is very similar to that of the Z-type European corn borer,
O. nubilalis. The present
finding raises the question of whether O. orientalis
, which is indistinguishable from O. nubilalis
based on external morphology,
is a biologically distinct species independent from
O. nubilalis. 相似文献

Summary. In earlier investigations on host plant discrimination of leaf beetles glucosinolates were described as feeding stimulants
for the Brassicaceae specialist Phaedon cochleariae F. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). However, since these findings could not be confirmed in later studies offering 2-propenylglucosinolate
in concentrations corresponding to those detected in host plant leaf material, the identification of feeding stimulants of
this leaf beetle species remained unclear. In order to investigate which compounds of the host plant Sinapis alba (Brassicaceae) are involved in feeding stimulation, leaf extracts of different polarities were tested in bioassays with adults
of P. cochleariae. Number of feeding beetles and net consumption rates were highest on pea leaves painted with methanol extracts of S. alba, whereas weak feeding responses were also detectable for hexane extracts. In subsequent bioassay-guided fractionations of
methanol extracts with semi-preparative high performance liquid chromatography, two distinct fractions, one containing glucosinolates
and another containing flavonoids, were found to stimulate beetles to feed to variable degrees. Other collected fractions
had zero activity. The combination of both active fractions evoked significantly higher consumption rates and stimulated more
beetles to feed than fractions tested individually. At least one compound of each fraction, among these the main glucosinolate
of S. alba, 4-hydroxybenzylglucosinolate, act additively. Effects of two different naturally-occurring ratios of glucosinolates and
flavonoids on the strength of feeding responses were investigated by use of extracts of two sets of host plants differently
exposed to radiation. One set was outdoors-exposed, whereas the second set was kept in the greenhouse. However, the feeding
behaviour of P. cochleariae was not affected by the significantly different relative compositions of both compound classes in the host material. In conclusion,
mustard leaf beetles need a combination of distinct plant metabolites acting in concert for feeding stimulation, whereby the
mere presence of these stimulants, but probably not the ratio of involved compounds, determines their feeding response. 相似文献

This study devised a staging system for, and monitored, the gonad development of the limpet species Patella vulgata and Patella ulyssiponensis on the South West coast of Ireland using histological techniques. Maturation began in the males of both species in January
and in the females it began in March. There was no statistical difference in gonad development between sexes and between species.
Spawning in the male P. vulgata occurred from September to December 2003 and in September and October 2004. In female P. vulgata spawning occurred from October to December 2003, no spawning of females was observed in 2004. In male P. ulyssiponensis spawning occurred in November and December 2003 and from September 2004 to December 2004. Spawning was observed from November
2003 to January 2004 and in September 2004 in female P. ulyssiponensis. Sex ratios also varied between the species and between months sampled. Nevertheless more males were observed in both species. 相似文献

Mating is essential for sexually reproducing species to pass on their genes. For sexual parasites, this implies a need to
switch the host in the search for a mate when potential partners are not available on the same host, although host switching
includes risks like starvation and predation. Studies of mate-searching behavior predict that commonly only one sex searches
for mating partners while the other remains stationary. In the present work, we experimentally infected rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) with the fish ectoparasite Argulus coregoni and determined whether the sex, age and the presence of mating partners influenced the host switching activity. Our results
show that increased host switching by A. coregoni occurred only after the parasite reached the adult stage and a difference between the sexes was also recorded. Host switching
by mature males was enhanced when no mating partners were present on the same host, whereas females remained mainly stationary
on their host regardless of male presence or absence. Our data therefore support the hypothesis that there is a strategic
difference in reproductive behavior between males and females; males invest energy in mate searching while females are rather
stationary and invest into body size and hence increased fecundity. Our data also showed that leaving the host to find a mate
is potentially costly in terms of predation since a substantial number of free-swimming parasites were eaten by fish. 相似文献

Summary. Myrmecophytic plants use obligate ant mutualists as a constitutive
indirect defence mechanism. These plants often produce cellular food bodies (FBs) to
nourish their resident ants. Lipids, proteins, and even highly specialised compounds
such as glycogen have been reported from FBs, but detailed chemical analyses of FB
composition have so far been presented only for Southeast Asian Macaranga
and Central American Piper myrmecophytes. Here we
report the chemical composition of FBs of five myrmecophytic Acacia
(Fabaceae) species from Mexico using HPLC (carbohydrates and proteins) and GC-MS
(lipids). Feeding experiments revealed no hints on any use of external food sources
by the inhabiting Pseudomyrmex ants. These ants
obviously rely completely on FBs and extrafloral nectar provided by their hosts.
The total content of nutrients in Acacia FBs was 15-25% of FB
dry mass, being much lower than in Macaranga or
Piper FBs. Proteins were dominating (8-14 % dm)
in Acacia FBs and thus were present in higher amounts than in
Macaranga FBs, yet in lower amounts than in
Piper. Lipids contributed 1-9 %
of dry mass, showing a lower proportion than in FBs of Macaranga
or Piper. Carbohydrates made up 3-11 % dm, reaching
in most Acacia species the same range as observed in
Macaranga and in Piper FBs.
Water content was 18-24 % of FB fresh mass, and structural tissue obviously made up
a much higher proportion in Acacia FBs than in
Macaranga or Piper
FBs. Both characters might represent an adaptation to producing FBs unprotected at
the leaf tips under dry conditions. Acacia FBs
contain all amino acids and all fatty acids that are considered essential for
insects, and their contents of lipids and proteins are higher than in the leaves
from which they are ontogenetically derived. This indicates a putatively adaptive
enrichment of nutritionally valuable compounds in structures functioning as ant-food. 相似文献

The maternally inherited bacterium Wolbachia pipientis generates strong reproductive incompatibilities between uninfected females and infected males (cytoplasmic incompatibility),
significantly reducing both female and male reproductive success. Such fitness costs are thought to place selective pressure
on hosts to evolve pre-copulatory preferences for mating with compatible mates, thereby enabling them to avoid the reproductive
incompatibilities associated with Wolbachia. Therefore, uninfected females are predicted to prefer mating with uninfected males, whereas infected males are predicted
to prefer mating with infected females. Despite these predictions, previous investigations of pre-copulatory mate preferences
in Wolbachia-manipulated Drosophila have not found evidence of female preference for uninfected or compatible males. However, none of these studies utilised
a design where focal individuals are provided with a simple choice in a relatively non-competitive situation. We examined
both female and male pre-copulatory mate preference based on mate infection status in Drosophila simulans and D. melanogaster using simple choice assays involving between 30–50 replicates per treatment. Although we found no evidence of female pre-copulatory
mate preferences in either species, male D. simulans exhibited some preference for mating with females of the same infection status. However, this preference was not evident
when we repeated the experiment to confirm this finding. Consequently, we conclude that neither male nor female D. melanogaster and D. simulans exhibit significant Wolbachia-associated pre-copulatory mate preferences. 相似文献

In bumblebees all species of the subgenus Psithyrus are social parasites in the nests of their Bombus hosts. In the bumblebee B. terrestris we investigated how colony size influences survival rates of nest entering females of the social parasite Psithyrus vestalis. Furthermore, we studied whether the host worker’s dominance status and age are reflected in its individual scent and whether
Psithyrus females use volatiles to selectively kill host workers. The survival rate of Psithyrus vestalis females drops from 100%, when entering colonies with five workers, to 0% for colonies containing 50 host workers. Older host
workers, born before the nest invasion, were selectively killed when Psithyrus females entered the nest. In contrast, all workers born after the nest invasion survived. The host workers’ dominance status
and age are reflected by their individual odours: newly emerged workers produced a significantly lower total amount of secretions
than 4-day-old workers. In chemical analyses of female groups we identified saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, aldehydes,
and unsaturated wax-type esters of fatty acids. In a discriminant function analysis different worker groups were mainly separated
by their bouquets of hydrocarbons. Killed workers release significantly more scent and of a different chemical composition,
than survivors. Survivors alter scent production and increase it beyond the level of the killed workers within 1 day of the
invasion. The Psithyrus female clearly maintains reproductive dominance utilizing these differences in the odour bouquets as criteria for killing
workers that compete for reproduction. 相似文献

We conducted grazing experiments with the three marine cladoceran genera Penilia, Podon and Evadne, with Penilia avirostris feeding on plankton communities from Blanes Bay (NW Mediterranean, Spain), covering a wide range of food concentrations (0.02–8.8 mm3 l–1, plankton assemblages grown in mesocosms at different nutrient levels), and with Podon intermedius and Evadne nordmanni feeding on the plankton community found in summer in Hopavågen Fjord (NE Atlantic, Norway, 0.4 mm3 l–1). P. avirostris and P. intermedius showed bell-shaped grazing spectra. Both species reached highest grazing coefficients at similar food sizes, i.e. when the food organisms ranged between 15 and 70 µm and between 7.5 and 70 µm at their longest linear extensions, respectively. E. nordmanni preferred organisms of around 125 µm, but also showed high grazing coefficients for particles of around 10 µm, while grazing coefficients for intermediate food sizes were low. Lower size limits were >2.5 µm, for all cladocerans. P. avirostris showed upper food size limits of 100 µm length (longest linear extension) and of 37.5 µm particle width. Upper size limits for P. intermedius were 135 µm long and 60 µm wide; those for E. nordmanni were 210 µm long and 60 µm wide. Effective food concentration (EFC) followed a domed curve with increasing nutrient enrichment for P. avirostris; maximum values were at intermediate enrichment levels. The EFC was significantly higher for P. intermedius than for E. nordmanni. With increasing food concentrations, the clearance rates of P. avirostris showed a curvilinear response, with a narrow modal range; ingestion rates indicated a rectilinear functional response. Mean clearance rates of P. avirostris, P. intermedius and E. nordmanni were 25.5, 18.0 and 19.3 ml ind.–1 day–1, respectively. Ingestion rates at similar food concentrations (0.4 mm3 l–1) were 0.6, 0.8 and 0.9 g C ind.–1 day–1.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe 相似文献

Summary The geometric isomers (E,E)-, (E,Z)-, (Z,E)-, and (Z,Z)-8,10-dodecadien-1-yl acetate were identified as sex pheromone components or sex attractants in the tribes Eucosmini and Grapholitini of the tortricid subfamily Olethreutinae. Species belonging to the more ancestral Tortricinae were not attracted. Each one isomer was behaviourally active in males ofCydia andGrapholita (Grapholitini), either as main pheromone compound, attraction synergist or attraction inhibitor. Their reciprocal attractive/antagonistic activity in a number of species enables specific communication with these four compounds.Pammene, as well as otherGrapholita andCydia responded to the monoenic 8- or 10-dodecen-1-yl acetates. Of the tribes Olethreutini and Eucosmini,Hedya, Epiblema, Eucosma, andNotocelia trimaculana were also attracted to 8,10-dodecadien-1-yl acetates, but several otherNotocelia to 10,12-tetradecadien-1-yl acetates. The female sex pheromones ofC. fagiglandana, C. pyrivora, C. splendana, Epiblema foenella andNotocelia roborana were identified. (E,E)- and (E,Z)-8,10-dodecadien-1-yl acetate are producedvia a commonE9 desaturation pathway inC. splendana. CallingC. nigricana andC. fagiglandana females are attracted to wingfanning males. 相似文献

A possible parasitoid-evasion behavioral adaptation is examined in male field crickets, Teleogryllus oceanicus, from three Hawaiian islands where parasitoid prevalence varies naturally among islands. Ormia ochracea, the parasitoid fly that parasitizes T. oceanicus on these islands, uses male calling song to locate its hosts. We used laboratory-reared males from three Hawaiian islands to determine if there are population differences in the time it takes for calling males to resume calling after a standardized disturbance. Males follow the expected pattern; males from the island with the greatest risk of parasitism have the longest latency to resume calling, and males from the island with the least risk of parasitism have the shortest latency to resume calling. Results are discussed in the context of behavioral adaptations to differing parasitism levels, and trade-offs between natural and sexual selection.Communicated by D. Gwynne 相似文献

Mate choice is not just a female preoccupation. Under some circumstances, males may also be choosy. However, studies of male mate choice have generally been confined to situations where males can make direct comparisons between potential partners. In contrast, sequential male mate choice has largely been overlooked despite its biologically importance, especially if current investment in mate attraction diminishes a males future mating opportunities. Using the Pacific blue-eye fish Pseudomugil signifer, we show that males are capable of exercising sequential mate choice. When presented sequentially with large and small females, males spent more effort courting the former. However, males did not appear to modify the time spent courting a given female based on the size of the female encountered previously. We suggest that greater attention to the sequential choice problem in males may help illuminate similarities and differences between the sexes when it comes to mating decisions.Communicated by T.
