The estuarine copepod Acartia tonsa was collected on several occasions between 4 April and 14 August 1985 from Terrebonne Bay, Louisiana (29°08N; 90°36W) and the effects in its diet of suspended sediments, collected from the same area, were measured at five different concentrations of sediment (100 to 1 000 ppm) and six phytoplankton concentrations (500 to 13 000 cells ml-1 Thalassiosira weissflogii). Egg production rate was used as an index of diet quality. At low phytoplankton concentrations (500 cells ml-1), and at intermediate phytoplankton concentrations (2 000 cells ml-1) for previously starved copepods, egg production was reduced by up to 40% at a sediment concentration of 250 ppm and further reduced at higher sediment concentrations. At higher food concentrations (4 000 to 13 000 cells ml-1), suspended sediment had no effect on egg production rates at sediment concentrations up to 500 ppm. Rates were reduced only at the highest sediment concentration of 1 000 ppm. Under most natural conditions, suspended sediment would not significantly affect egg production rates in A. tonsa.  相似文献

The present study focused on biochemical responses of Spirodela polyrhiza to cadmium stresses and its accumulation. The laboratory experiments were conducted for the assessment of biochemical responses and accumulation of cadmium in plants at its various concentrations (0.1, 0.5, 1.5 and 2.0 ppm) at the regular interval for twelve days exposure. Spirodela showed visible symptoms like withering of roots and chlorosis at higher concentration (2.0 ppm), however the plant showed normal growth at lower concentration (0.1 ppm). The estimation of biochemical parameters (total chlorophyll, protein and carbohydrate) of test plants showed a significant increase at lower concentration (0.1 ppm) of cadmium. The biochemical changes decrease with increase in exposure concentration and duration. The toxic effect of cadmium is directly proportional to its concentration and duration. The accumulation of cadmium by Spirodela polyrhiza was maximum at four days exposure duration and gradually decreases.  相似文献

Weight specific oxygen consumption and heart rates were investigated in blue swimming crab, Portunus pelagicus to indicate the stress in response to increasing salinities (50, 75, 100 and 125%SW) and increasing copper concentration (0, 0.75, 1.5, 3 and 6 ppm copper) at temperature 25 degrees C. Oxygen consumption (micromol.g(-1).h(-1) was measured using closed system respirometer (Strathkelvin Instruments oxygen meter model 781). Heart rates (beat.min(-1)) were recorded using impedance techniques. It has been found that oxygen consumption and heart rate increased with decreasing salinities and increasing copper concentration. The statistic showed weight specific oxygen consumption of P. pelagicus after 96 hr exposure to 6 ppm copper in all salinities were significantly different (P < 0.05) from 0 ppm copper. Mean heart rate of P. pelagicus in 50%SW after 96 hr exposure to 6 ppm copper were significantly different (P < 0.05) from 0 ppm copper.  相似文献

The brine shrimp Artemia salina L. was acclimated in sea water with cupric chloride, acetate, carbonate, and sulphate, each at concentrations of 0.1, 0.05 and 0.025 ppm Cu++, together with sea water controls. Growth inhibition was observed in all four compounds, generally in direct relationship to the concentration. It was least in sulphate, and increased progressively in chloride, acetate and carbonate in that order. No inhibition however was observed in carbonate at 0.025 ppm Cu++. In toxicity tests, 2-week old larvae from each solution were exposed to concentrations of 10, 7.5, 5, 2.5 and 1 ppm Cu++ of the same compounds, together with unacclimated larvae of the same age. Similar tests were held with 6-week old adults acclimated (a) in 0.1 ppm Cu++ (chloride, acetate and sulphate) using the same concentrations and (b) in 0.5 ppm Cu++ (carbonate), using 150, 125, 100, 75, and 50 ppm Cu++. Toxicity to unacclimated larvae and adults differed with the compounds, carbonate being the least toxic, followed by sulphate, chloride and acetate in increasing order. Larvae acclimated in chloride (0.025 ppm Cu++) and sulphate (0.1 and 0.5 ppm Cu++) showed an increased tolerance to 1 and 2.5 ppm Cu++ compared to untreated controls. Tolerance was not enhanced from 5 ppm Cu++ upwards. In both compounds, adults acclimated in 0.1 ppm Cu++ showed an increased tolerance to concentrations between 1 and 7.5 ppm Cu++ compared to controls. Larval mortality in carbonate was below 50% in all test solutions. Adults acclimated at 0.5 ppm Cu++ showed an increased tolerance to 50 ppm Cu++ compared to controls. Considerable precipitation occurred with the high levels of this compound, thus effecting the final concentrations. No acclimation effect was observed in acetate for either larvae or adults. It is suggested that in A. salina, copper toxicity depends on the particular form of the metal, and that this difference is also evident in growth inhibition and in the potential acquisition of increased tolerance through exposure to low concentrations.  相似文献

Larvae of the estuarine grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio (Holthuis) were reared from hatch through successful completion of metamorphosis in 80 combinations of salinity (3 to 31%), temperature (20° to 35°C), and zinc (0.00 to 1.00 ppm Zn++). Response-surface methodology was employed to depict the individual effects and interactions of the three factors on survival and developmental duration through total larval development. Outside the optimal salinity-temperature conditions of 17 to 27 S and 20° to 27°C, viability of larvae was reduced by both the individual effects of salinity and temperature and interactions between the two factors. Survival capacity of larvae and resistance adaptations to salinity and temperature were progresively reduced by zinc concentrations from 0.25 to 1.00 ppm Zn++. Response-surface analysis of the data suggested that the duration of total larval development of P. pugio was least at salinities from 18 to 23 and at temperatures from 30° to 32°C. At both higher and lower salinity-temperature conditions and in increasing zinc concentrations from 0.25 to 1.00 ppm Zn++, developmental rates were retarded. A significant zinc-temperature interaction existed, whereby increasing zinc concentrations reduced both survival and developmental rates of larvae more at suboptimal temperatures. Larval resistance to zinc toxicity was least at supraoptimal salinities, indicative of a significant zinc-salinity interaction. The reduced viability, restricted euryplasticity, and retarded developmental rates of P. pugio larvae developing in media with low-level zinc contamination would limit the distributive properties of the pelagic phase in the life cycle of the species and reduce recruitment both into and out of the parent estuarine population.  相似文献

In copper based antifouling (AF) paints Cu (I) oxide was largely used as booster biocide. In this study effect of Cu (I) oxide on two marine microalgae, Tetraselmis suecica and Dunaliella tertiolecta was demonstrated. EC50 (96 hr) concentrations estimated for T. suecica and D. tertiolecta were 1.3 mg l(-1) and 1.34 mg l(-1), respectively. Copper (I) oxide induced changes in growth, chlorophyll, carbohydrate and protein contents were observed in T. suecica and D. tertiolecta. At low concentration of 0.0625 mg l(-1), 3-26% and 1-16% growth stimulation was observed in T. suecica and T. tertiolecta respectively. Increasing Cu (I) oxide concentrations proportionately decreased the carbohydrate and protein contents. This study clearly indicates the toxicity of excessive Cu (I) oxide on growth and biochemical compositions of T. suecica and D. tertiolecta.  相似文献

Toxicity assessment of heavy metals with Nostoc muscorum L   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Heavy metals in aquatic ecosystem (Mn, Ni, Zn, Cu) were tested for their toxicity against Nostoc muscorum L., a common fresh water phytoplankton, with respect to chlorophyll, protein, total carbohydrate and starch contents along with growth (OD). Mn showed stimulatory effect up to 1.5 ppm for all the observed parameters. However, Ni, Zn and Cu (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 ppm) showed adverse effects even at 0.1 ppm. Chlorophyll was most sensitive parameter followed by carbohydrate, protein and starch. Ni was most toxic to N. muscorum followed by Cu and Zn. The IC50 for Ni was 0.1 ppm for growth, chlorophyll and protein, while total carbohydrate and starch showed IC50 at 0.3 and 0.4 ppm, respectively. The IC50 for Cu was recorded at 0.2 ppm for all the parameters. Zn showed IC50 at 0.3 ppm for growth, chlorophyll, protein and starch at 0.4 ppm for carbohydrate. This study can be applied as bioassay using cyanobacteria for toxicity assessment of various industrial wastes in aquatic ecosystem.  相似文献

Mussels (Mytilus edulis) were collected from an unpolluted site in Newfoundland in 1984 and 1985 in order to determine the zinc levels of the whole soft tissues and individual organs. Individuals were collected in such a way as to eliminate all known physiological and environmental factors which might have led to differences in zinc concentration between individual mussels. The inherent variability of the whole soft tissue zinc concentration was found to be very high with a coefficient of variation (CV) around 40%. Most individual organs had relatively low mean zinc concentrations with small values for CV (10–18%). However, the kidney showed a relatively high mean zinc concentration (828 ppm) with a remarkable degree of variability (94–3 410 ppm) (CV=78%) and is responsible not only for the high degree of inherent variability in the population but also for the high levels of zinc found in the whole soft tissue of some individual mussels. Those individuals with high whole soft tissue zinc concentrations often had high kidney zinc concentrations and stored as much as 53% of their zinc load in the kidney (which accounted for only 1–3% of the total weight). However, other individual mussels with low whole soft tissue zinc concentrations had low kidney zinc concentrations and stored as little as 3% of their body zinc load in the kidney. Hence, the role that the kidney plays in zinc storage varies markedly from mussel to mussel.M.S.R.L. Contribution No. 624  相似文献

Growth, lipid peroxidation, different antioxidative enzymes and metal accumulation were studied in Lemna polyrrhiza treated with different concentrations (1-40 ppm) of CdSO4. The growth of the plant was slightly enhanced with 1 ppm, while higher concentrations retarted growth and multiplication of fronds, the effect being concentration and dose dependant. Increase in malondialdehyde content was insignificant after the first week but a prolonged exposure led to significant (p < 0.05) increase of about 38% and 45% over the control in 20 and 30 ppm, respectively after four weeks. Catalase (EC 1.11.1.6; CAT) activity increased at low concentration, but it declined to 42% and 54% at 40 ppm after 6 and 30 days, respectively Superoxide dismutase (EC 1.15.1.1; SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.11;APx) and glutathione reductase (EC 1.6.4.2) increased at both low as well at high concentrations, but a prolonged exposure to high concentration of Cd (40 ppm) led to significant (p < 0.05) decline in the mean activities of these antioxidant enzymes. Accumulation of Cd in biomass was concentration and time dependant However at high concentration of 40 ppm, Cd accumulation did not increase significantly (p < 0.05) with time. Increased activities of antioxidant enzymes in Cd treated plants suggest that metal tolerance in L. polyrrhiza might be associated to the changes of antioxidant enzymatic activities.  相似文献

Environmental exposure to arsenic (As) in the Kutahya region of the western Anatolia, Turkey has been reported to cause various types of arsenic-associated skin disorders (Dogan, Dogan, Celebi, & Baris, 2005). A geological and mineralogical study was conducted to find the sources and distribution of the As. Geogenic (background) levels were measured in samples collected from various sources in the Gediz, Simav, Tavsanli, Emet, Yoncali, Yenicekoy, and Muratdagi areas of the Kutahya region. Based on this analysis, we determined that natural sources are a domineering factor affecting the distribution of As, which was found: (1) mainly in evaporitic minerals, including colemanite (269–3900 ppm) and gypsum (11–99,999 ppm), but also in alunite (7–10 ppm) and chert (54–219 ppm); (2) in secondary epithermal gypsum, which has a high concentration of As in the form of realgar and orpiment along fracture zones of Mesozoic and Cenozoic carbonate aquifers; (3) in rocks, including limestone/dolomite (3–699 ppm) and travertine (5–4736 ppm), which are relatively more enriched in As than volcanics (2–14 ppm), probably because of secondary enrichment through hydrological systems; (4) in coal (1.9–46.5 ppm) in the sedimentary successions of the Tertiary basins; (5) in thermal waters, where As is unevenly distributed at concentrations varying from 0.0–0.9 mg/l. The highest As concentrations in thermal water (Gediz and Simav) correlate to the higher pH (7–9.3) and T (60–83°C) conditions and to the type of water (Na–HCO3–SO4 with high concentration of Ca, Mg, K, SiO2, and Cl in the water). Changes in pH can be related to some redox reactions, such as the cation exchange reactions driving the dissolution of carbonates and silicates. Fe-oxidation, high pH values (7–9.3), presence of other trace metals (Ni, Co, Pb, Zn, Al), increased salinity (Na, Cl), high B, Li, F, and SiO, high Fe, SO4 (magnetite, specularite-hematite, gypsum), and graphite, and the presence of U, Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, and B, especially in the Emet, Gediz, and Simav areas, are the typical indicators for the geothermally affected water with high As content. A sixth source of As in this region is the ground (0.0–10.7 mg/l) and the surface waters (0.0022–0.01 mg/l), which are controlled by water–rock interaction, fracture system, and mixing/dilution of thermal waters. The high As concentration in groundwater corresponds to the areas where pathological changes are greatest in the habitants. Arsenic in ground water also effects ecology. For example, only Juriperus oxycedrus and J. varioxycedrus types of vegetation are observed in locations with the highest concentration of As in the region. Branches and roots of these plants are enriched in As.  相似文献

Amino acid uptake and respiration by marine heterotrophs   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The concentration and turnover of dissolved free amino acids were measured in samples from 25 and 100 m on three occasions at a station 6 miles off the California (USA) coast. Individual amino acid concentrations varied from undetectable (<0.05 g/l) to 3 g/l, the total amino acid concentration from 1.8 to 8.5 g/l. The greater concentration of total amino acids was always found at 25 m. The predominant amino acids were serine, lysine, aspartate, glutamate and alanine; reliable analyses could not be made for glycine because of a high blank. For the 10 individual amino acids studied, the rate of heterotrophic turnover ranged from undetectable to 1.2 g/l day-1; serine, aspartate, alanine and glutamate showed the highest rates. In samples from 25 m, the rates were 15 to 20 times higher than those taken from 100 m. The total calculated flux of the amino acids studied varied from 0.015 to 3.2 g/l day-1 and amounted to 1–10% of photosynthetic carbon dioxide fixation.  相似文献

Neurotoxic effect of BHC, the organochlorine pesticide in Heteropneustes fossilis has been studied exposing at the dose concentrations of 1 ppm, 5 ppm and 10 ppm in lab aquarium for 96 hours over a period of one year. The results showed the behavioural abnormalities in different exposure concentrations such as dysfunction of endocrine gland, excretion of mucus, dispigmentation, sign of restlessness, erratic swimming with rapid jurkey movement, spiralling and convolution showing severe effect in central nervous system. Therefore an attempt has been made for monitoring of BHC residues viz. alpha, beta, gamma isomers in the brain tissue exposed to different sublethal concentrations using Gas liquid chromatography. The mean values of isomers were found to be 1.587 microg/gm for 1 ppm, 2.993 microg/gm for 5 ppm and 3.78 microg/gm for 10 ppm test group. Severe behavioural abnormalities were recorded at high dose concentration of pesticides with higher accumulation of pesticide residues in brain tissue.  相似文献

Common mussels (Mytilus edulis L.) were exposed over a 5-month period to low-level concentrations (0.5 to 1.5 ppm) of a nonionic surfactant. Upon maturation at the end of this period, spawning ability was examined. Fertilization occurred at low-level concentrations (0.1 to 2.0 ppm) of the surfactant, and was most successful for gametes from the long-term controls and the highest long-term concentration (1.5 ppm). Inhibited or delayed larval development was observed, related to the concentration gradient of the short-term exposures. Gametes from mussels long-term exposed to the surfactant were more sensitive than those from the long-term control.  相似文献

Embryos of the Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) were exposed to serial concentrations of atrazine (0, 25, 50, and 100 ppm) and arsenic trioxide (0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1 ppm) until hatching. Stasis of circulation, blood islands, titanic convulsions, tube heart and mortality were observed in atrazine-treated embryos. Each endpoint exhibited a concentration-response relationship. Only 4% of the embryos hatched in the 25 ppm, and none in the 50 and 100 ppm, probably due to cell death attributed to the embryos' inability to break from the chorion. With arsenic exposure, hatching was inversely correlated to chemical concentration: 86%, 75% and 54% for 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1 ppm, respectively. Hatching periods were also reduced from 7-13 days in controls to 7-11 days in arsenic-treated embryos. This observation was more pronounced with the 0.05 ppm concentration, showing a reduction of about 4 days. Despite this shortage in hatching time, there were no observable morphological abnormalities, as seen with atrazine. The ecological significance of these findings and implications for the development of sublethal toxicity tests using Japanese medaka embryos are important.  相似文献

A 3-year monitoring of dissolved and particulate carbohydrate concentrations in four transects located in the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Seas was performed in order to get information on the role played by carbohydrates in the mucilage formation in these areas. The application of time series analysis pointed out that the concentration of dissolved carbohydrates does not vary significantly in coincidence of the mucilage appearance showing an almost constant state with respect to time. In contrast, wider temporal variations of carbohydrate amounts, either increase or decrease, were observed when mucilages were lacking or reduced. This almost constant state of carbohydrate amounts observed in presence of mucilages that we define 'steady state' could be associated to an alteration of the complex chemical equilibrium between synthesis and degradation (either hydrolysis or oxidation) reactions of the organic polymers which are typical of the humification processes in the marine environment. The results of this study suggest that the monitoring of carbohydrates can represent an useful tool for the comprehension of the most relevant phenomena of mucilage appearance in the Northern Adriatic Sea.  相似文献

Young oysters (Crassostrea virginica) were continuously exposed to Aroclor® 1254, a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), in flowing, unfiltered seawater. Growth rate (height and in-water weight) was significantly reduced (=0.05) in oysters exposed to 5 g/l (ppb) for 24 weeks. Growth rate was not affected in oysters exposed to 1 ppb for 30 weeks. Mortality was not significant in exposed and control groups. In oysters exposed to 5 ppb, greatest PCB residue (whole body) was 425 mg/kg (ppm), 85,000x the concentration in the water, and less than 0.3 ppm was retained after 28 weeks depuration in PCB-free water. In oysters exposed to 1 ppb, greatest residue was 101 ppm, 101,000x the concentration in the water, and less than 0.2 ppm was retained after 12 weeks depuration. Examination of oysters exposed to 5 ppb of this PCB for pathogenesis revealed atrophy of digestive diverticular epithelium and degeneration of vesicular connective tissues concomitant with leukocytic infiltration, but tissue recovery seemed excellent after 12 weeks depuration.Registered trademark, Monsanto Company, St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The combined effect of salinity, temperature and chronic exposure to water-soluble fractions (WSF) of a No. 2 fuel oil on the survival and development rate of embryos ofFundulus heteroclitus Walbaum are described. The embryos were exposed at 3 salinities (10, 20, 30 S) and 3 temperatures (20°, 25°, 30°C) to 3 different oil concentrations (15, 20, 25% WSF, equivalent to approx 0.28, 0.38 and 0.47 ppm total naphthalenes) and to one control without oil. The results were analyzed by responsesurface methodology. The lowest oil concentration was only mildly toxic to embryos under optimal salinity/temperature conditions, while the highest was extremely toxic in all factor combinations. Under optimal conditions, only the highest oil concentration resulted in more than 50% mortality. Under suboptimal conditions, especially high and low temperatures, all 3 oil concentrations caused greater than 50% mortality. The interactive effect of salinity and temperature on survival was greatest at the lowest oil concentration. Temperature had a marked effect and salinity only a slight effect on the developmental rate of the embryos. Exposure to the low oil concentration tended to increase the temperature sensitivity of developmental duration slightly. Generally, exposure to oil decreased the time interval between fertilization and hatching.  相似文献

Effects of the juvenile hormone (JH) mimic hydroprene (Altozar®: ZR-512), which exhibits high activity against Lepidoptera, were studied on the larval development of the mud-crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould) (Brachyura: Xanthidae). Larvae reared in 20 S at 3 cycles of temperature of 20° to 25°C, 25° to 30°C and 30° to 35°C, were exposed to 0.01, 0.1 and 0.5 ppm hydroprene from hatching to the first crab stage. Larvae were also exposed to 0.1 and 0.5 ppm hydroprene only from the megalopa stage to the first crab stage. When larvae were treated with hydroprene throughout larval life, survival was significantly reduced with increasing concentrations of the compound at all temperature cycles. Synergistic effect between hydroprene and temperature on survival of zoeal larvae was not observed. On the average there was 11% less survival in the zoeal stages at the 0.01 ppm concentration. of hydroprene than in the control, an additional reduction of 13% occurred at 0.1 ppm, and finally there was a further decrease of 46% at 0.5 ppm hydroprene. Significant decrease in survival in the megalopa stage occurred only in the 0.5 ppm concentration of hydroprene at the lowest temperature cycle when larvae were exposed to the compound from hatching. When larvae were treated with hydroprene only within the megalopa stage, a significant reduction in survival was not observed. First-stage zoeae were the most sensitive of the larval stages to hydroprene. Duration of zoeal development was significantly delayed at 0.5 ppm hydroprene at the two lower temperature cycles, whereas in the megalopa stage the delay began at the 0.1 ppm level at all 3 temperature cycles when larvae were exposed to hydroprene from hatching. A significant delay was also observed at 0.1 ppm hydroprene at the two lower cycles when larvae were exposed to hydroprene only in the megalopa stage; at 30° to 35°C a significant delay was observed only at the 0.5 ppm level. The results show that metamorphosis to the first crab stage was not inhibited at the 0.5 ppm level of hydroprene or lower. Reduction in survival and increase in duration of larval development were presumably related to stress conditions caused by hydroprene. The results also suggest an interaction between temperature and hydroprene on survival of megalopa larvae and duration of larval development.  相似文献

The phosphorus metabolism of Pyrocystis noctiluca Murray (Schuett) 1886 has characteristics which may enhance its potential for success in orthophosphate impoverished waters. The steady-state phosphate uptake rates were equal in the light and dark, and were directly proportional to both the phosphorus cell quota and the cell division rate. In contrast, nutrient-saturated uptake rates were multiphasic, faster in the light than the dark, 2 to 4 orders of magnitude greater than steady-state rates, and were inversely proportional to both the phosphorus cell quota and the cell division rate. These uptake characteristics suggest that P. noctiluca may take up phosphate coincidently at their typically low ambient concentrations as well as to exploit episodic nutrient events in nature. Cell division rates were a hyperbolic function of the ambient orthophosphate concentration. The shortest doubling time was 8.7 d, the phosphate concentration at half the maximum division rate was 0.15 M and the threshold, concentration for cell division was ca 0.05 M PO 4 3- . Division rates of P. noctiluca in the ocean are much faster than predicted from the measured ambient orthophosphate concentrations. Since this dinoflagellate has high naturally occurring alkaline phosphatase activities, and can utilize organic-P compounds, we suggest that organic-P can be as important as orthophosphate in supporting the observed division rates of P. noctiluca in the sea.  相似文献

The trochid snail Monodonta articulata Lamarck was exposed to mercuric sulphate at concentrations of 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++. At 24 h, retraction into the shell was observed in 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++; this retraction increased in these concentrations at 36 h. Retracted snails died if retained in the solutions, but generally recovered within 24 to 48 h if transferred to uncontaminated sea water. Immersionemersion behaviour and interface activity were studied over 24 h by means of an aktograph; snails in normal sea water spent more time below than above the water surface, and exhibited frequent periods of activity. Exposure to mercuric sulphate at concentration of 0.25, 0.5, 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++ progressively reduced both the length and frequency of activity periods. From 0.5 ppm Hg++ upwards, emersion periods increased, and immersion periods decreased. Oxygen consumption of snails was measured in sea water and in mercuric sulphate at concentrations of 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++. Oxygen consumption decreased significantly with each progressive rise in mercury concentration. It is considered that mercury affects M. articulata by interfering with respiration, initially reducing interface activity, then forcing the snail for longer and longer periods out of the water. Retraction occurs when activity is no longer possible. It is concluded that respiratory and behavioural alterations of this nature would afford a good indicator of the presence of sub-lethal concentrations of pollutants.  相似文献
