Studies of geographic population variation needed to estimate gene flow are lacking in deep-sea biology. Using allozyme electrophoresis, I have studied population-level geographic variation among scavenging lysianassoid amphipod populations (Abyssorchomene spp.) inhabiting deep-water basins of the Southern California Continental Borderland. Samples were collected from November 1987 to November 1990, using baited traps, from six basins whose bottom depths ranged from ca. 1000 to 2100 m. Five basins (San Diego Trough, Santa Catalina, San Nicolas, Santa Cruz, Tanner Basins) could be grouped together as shallow-sill basins, with physical conditions distinctly different from a single deepsill basin (San Clemente Basin). Amphipods tentatively identified asAbyssorchomene sp. 1 collected from the shallow-sill basins were morphologically discriminated from those collected in the San Clemente Basin, which were identified asAbyssorchomene sp. 2. Results from eight enzyme loci revealed significant genetic differentiation [Nei's genetic distance (D)>0.155] of deep-sill basin-dwellingAbyssorchomene sp. 2 vsAbyssorchomene sp. 1 from the shallow-sill basins and low levels of gene flow (migration rate, <1). Comparisons of benthic fauna suggest the presence of an abyssal-related assemblage in the deep-sill basin isolated from the northern shallow-sill basins. Genetic distances among the five shallow-sill basin populations ofAbyssorchomene sp. 1 were very low (D < 0.003). Estimates of gene flow among these populations were very high ( > 24 to 170) and suggested weak isolation by distance.  相似文献

The requirement of plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.) larvae for the fatty acids 20:5 3 and 22:6 3 was studied. Larvae were reared from first feeding to beyond metamorphosis on Artemia sp. nauplii (EG brand), whose nutritional content had been manipulated by enrichment. Some larvae were fed Artemia rich in 20:5 3 and 22:6 3, and others were fed nauplii with no 22:6 3 and low levels of 20:5 3 (1.9% of the total fatty acids). The differences in diet had no significant difference on growth or survival of the plaice larvae. The results indicate that the plaice larvae in this study did not require 22:6 3 in their diet, even when the levels of 20:5 3 were low.  相似文献

Sorting centers are important for processing material collected during extensive oceanic expeditions. Based on information obtained from samples of appendicularians, this paper demonstrates that usual procedures adopted in sorting centers produce samples which contain only a fraction of the organisms present in the original catch (or subsample). In addition, the proportion of individuals sorted varies considerably. In four Indian Ocean Standard Net catches collected in the Arabian Sea, subsamples (called sorted samples in this paper) are compared with careful microscopical counts (quantitative counts) performed by the author. The numbers of appendicularians found in quantitative counts were 2.4 to 19.2 times higher than those in the sorted samples. Sorting efficiency varies in different forms of appendicularians; it is particularly low in Fritillaria sp. Bad preservation and small body size further reduce the portion sorted out. Under certain conditions (e.g. net clogging), numerous small appendicularians are retained which normally would pass easily through the meshes of the plankton net.  相似文献

The effect of light intensity, pH and carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitors on photosynthesis of the red marine macroalgae Solieria filiformis (Kützing) Gabrielson, collected from Taliarte (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands) in 1991, has been investigated. Plants taken from the sea (wild phenotype) developed spherical morphology (ball phenotype) after 2 mo culture in aerated tanks. The photosynthetic oxygen evolution in the wild phenotype was saturated at 100 mol photons m-2s-1, while the ball phenotype displayed saturation at 200 mol photons m-2s-1. The inhibitors of total CA activity (6-ethoxizolamide) and extracellular CA activity (dextran-bound sulfonamide) inhibited photosynthesis at pH 8.2, to 90 and 50% respectively, in both phenotypes. No inhibition of the photosynthetic oxygen evolution was detected at pH 6.5. CA activity was associated with both supernatant and pellet fractions of crude extracts of S. filiformis. The rate of alkalization of the medium by the algae was dependent on light intensity. We suggest that carbon dioxide is the general form of inorganic carbon transported across the plasmamembrane in S. filiformis. HCO3 transport into the cell takes place simultaneously by an indirect mechanism (dehydration to CO2 catalyzed by CAext) and by direct uptake. Extracellular (CAext) and intracellular (CAint) CAs are involved in the mechanisms of inorganic carbon assimilation by S. filiformis.  相似文献

Photomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the fine structure of the latero-frontal cirri on the gills of three species of bivalve mollusc: Mytilus edulis Linn., Barnea candida (Linn.), and Petricola pholadiformis Lam. The component cilia are seen to branch off alternately along the length of each cirrus. Each of these free, lateral lengths of the cilia are separated from the next on their side by a mean distance of 0.6 m. They extend to a mean length of 2.7 m in M. edulis, the species described in detail. It is shown that a complete straining mesh can be formed over the gill ostium during normal filtering and the aperture of this mesh correlates well with the previously recorded filtering efficiency for Mytilus.  相似文献

The effect of salinity on embryonic development ofSepia officinalis (cuttlefish) in the Delta Area (South Western part of The Netherlands) was investigated in 1988/1989, and compared with data concerning the distribution ofS. officinalis in the three main parts of this area: Oosterschelde, Westerschelde and Grevelingen. Embryos hatched in water collected at Yerseke (Oosterschelde), Vlissingen (Western part of the Westerschelde) and Bommenede (Grevelingen), i.e., at salinity values above 28.1, but not in water sampled at Hoedekenskerke and Hansweert (Middle and Eastern part of the Westerschelde; salinities below 22.0). Under laboratory conditions, using diluted Oosterschelde water, the highest hatching percentages ofS. officinalis were found at salinities above 29.8. Some embryos hatched at a salinity value of 26.5 but no hatching occurred at salinities below 23.9. In embryos exposed to salinity changes during late embryonic development, the developmental rate decreased at salinity values of 28.7 or less. Below 22.4 embryos with morphological malformations were found. It can be concluded that salinity is an important factor limiting the distribution ofS. officinalis in most parts of the Delta Area, with the exception of the Western part of the Westerschelde and the Grevelingen.Contribution no. 489 of the Library of the Delta Institute for Hydrobiological Research  相似文献

The coralline alga Phymatolithon calcareum was dredged from 13 m in the Kattegatt, Baltic Sea, in December, 1980, and its rate of calcification was measured by 45Ca++-uptake methods. Light-saturated calcification rates at 5°C ranged from 15.8 g CaCO3 g-1 dry wt h-1 for the basal parts of the plants to 38.7 g CaCO3 g-1 dry wt h-1 for the tips. These age gradients were not apparent when calcification rates were expressed on the basis of surface area. Experiments with salinity (10, 20, 30) and temperature (0°, 5°, 10°, 20°C) indicated that optimum conditions for calcification were at 30 S and at temperatures above 10°C. Salinity had a greater influence on calcification rate than did temperature, and there was a positive relationship between salinity and calcification rate at all temperatures. In 6 mo old cultures, salinity was again the important factor, with all plants remaining healthy at 30 except those at the highest temperature (20°C). These trends, and the low calcification rates at 10S (4.6 g CaCO3 g-1 dry wt h-1 at 5°C to 8.6 g CaCO3g-1 dry wt h-1 at 20°C) suggest that low salinity may be the explanation for the general absence of P. calcareum from the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea. Short-term experiments in which salinity was kept constant while Ca++ concentration was altered, and experiments in which salinity was varied and Ca++ concentration kept constant, suggest that it is the calcium ion concentration and not salinity per se which affects calcification rates.  相似文献

Routine oxygen consumption of very young juveniles (0.1 g) of Penaeus indicus H. Milne Edwards was significantly influenced by ambient temperature and weight of the animal, but not by ambient salinity, when tested at salinities (7, 21, and 35) to which they had been long-term (over 10 days) acclimated. Standard oxygen consumption of young juvenile prawns (1 to 3 g), subjected to step-wise changes in ambient salinity, from sea water to low salinity waters (2 to 6), and measured after short-term (24 h) salinity acclimation at each step, was lowest at salinities where prawns such as those tested occur naturally (10 to 15). The metabolic rates do not appear to have a direct relation to the osmotic gradient, even when the influence of interfering activity is eliminated. It appears that factors other than osmotic gradient will have to be sought in order to explain the metabolic patterns of P. indicus in relation to salinity.  相似文献

Summary The initial stage of pair formation of the pied and the collared flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca and F. albicollis) was simulated in a field experiment. Male dummies positioned near nest boxes and singing by means of tape-recorded song from loudspeakers offered prospecting females a nest box combined with an automatic trap. An unequivocal demonstration of female arrival at the male's territory was obtained by the trapping of the female. Control nest-box traps were provided with silent dummies. Factors other than male song causing female attraction were controlled by a daily switch of the position of singing and silent dummies. Nine out of ten females were caught in nest-box traps with singing dummies (one-tailed binomial test, P=0.011). The result supports the hypothesis that male song functions in mate attraction. This hypothesis has never previously been tested in field experiments although circumstantial evidence for it has been available.  相似文献

Extracts from marine sponges collected in French Polynesia and along the Brittany coast (France) have been tested for antibacterial and antifungal activity. The bioactity is concentrated in Dendrilla sp., Homaxinella trachys, Hyrtios eubamma, Verongia aerophoba and Phakellia ventilabrum. The compound responsible for the activity of H. eubamma has been identified as puupehenone, while that of P. ventilabrum is due to a new sesquiteprenoid isonitrile.This study forms part of the Thèse 3e cycle of Ph. Solemya reidi Bernard 1980 is a gutless protobranch bivalve known to possess intracellular chemoautotrophic bacterial symbionts in its gill. A light and electron microscope study on the embryology and larval development of S. reidi provides data for the bivalve Subclass Cryptodonta. S. reidi spontaneously spawned large eggs (271 m in diameter), which developed within individual gelatious egg capsules. The first several cleavages were equal and a distinct molluscan cross was formed at the animal pole of the embryo, features previously unreported in bivalve development. Lecithotrophic pericalymma larvae (similar to the larvae of paleotaxodont protobranch bivalves and aplacophoran molluscs) hatched at 18 to 24 h and remained in the water column for a further 5 d at 10°C. At hatching, larvae measured from 360 to 440 m in length and from 225 to 265 m in cross-sectional diameter. Definitive adult structures developed within an epithelial locomotory test entirely covered with compound cilia. The test histolysed at metamorphosis and was ingested throught the mouth into the perivisceral cavity. Length and height of the shell following metamorphosis was 433 m (±42 m, n=16) and 282 m (± 29 m, n=13), respectively. Primary data and data from the literature show that the type of larval development in both paleotaxodont and cryptodont bivalves cannot be reliably estimated from egg or prodissoconch sizes.  相似文献

In 1988, immatureCapitella sp. I (initial biomass 80µg dry wt) were raised on four diets: Gerber cereal, TetraMin fish food,Ulva sp., and benthic diatoms. After 2 wk of culturing different populations on these diets, eggs were dissected from gravid females, frozen and analyzed for fatty acid and sterol composition. Eggs produced by worms on different food types were discriminated by fatty acid composition in a principal component analysis (PCA), with 18:19, 18:2, 20:5 and 20:4 fatty acids showing the greatest differences between experimental groups. The sterol profiles of all eggs were dominated by cholesterol (cholest-5-en-3-ol) and cholest-5,24-dien-3-ol (>60%). A PCA of egg sterols discriminated between adult diets with cholesterol, 23,24-dimethyl-cholesta-5-en-3-ol, cholest-5,24-dien-3-ol and a C-29 stenol showing the greatest differences. In field populations ofCapitella sp. I, oocytes produced at different times of the year may have different levels of lipids depending on their dietary availability during vitellogenesis. Variations in oocyte composition may influence larval growth and development and thus have an impact on population dynamics. Alternatively, variations in fatty acid and sterol composition of oocytes may allow us to identify the food resources utilized by this species.  相似文献

Larvae of Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould) were reared from hatching to the first or second crab stages in 11 combinations of salinities and cyclic temperatures (5, 20, and 35 S at 20° to 25°C, 25° to 30°C, and 30° to 35°C; 25 S at 20° to 25°C and 30° to 35°C). The larvae survived to the megalops and first crab stages in all salinities and cycles of temperature other than 5 S at 30° to 35°C. The best survival to the megalops (94%) and first crab (90%) stages occurred in 20 S, 20° to 25°C. In all other combinations of salinities and temperatures there was a reduction in survival to the first crab stage. The duration of the larval stages was affected significantly by temperature, whereas the effect of salinity on the mean days from hatching to the first crab stage was not consistent at the different temperature cycles. Development to the first crab stage required the shortest time in 20 S, 30° to 35°C (mean 12.3 days), and the longest time in 5 and 35 S, 20° to 25°C (mean 22.6 days and 21.6 days, respectively). Megalops larvae reared in 35 S at all cycles of temperature, as well as larvae in 20 and 25 S, 30° to 35°C, showed a high percentage of abnormality, with the highest percentage occurring in 35 S, 30° to 35°C. The age and habitat of the giant squid, Architeuthis sanctipauli Velain, 1877, were determined based on isotopic analyses of the statoliths of three female specimens captured off Tasmania, Australia, between January and March 1996. Assuming that the aragonite of the statoliths formed in equilibrium with seawater, 18O analyses indicated that the squid lived at temperatures of 10.5–12.9°C, corresponding to average depths of 125–250 m and maximum depths of 500 m. The capture records indicated that these squid may have occasionally ranged still deeper, to as much as 1000 m. All the statoliths were labeled with bomb 14C (14C=+22.9 to +44.6), consistent with the depths inferred from 18O. A thin section through one of the statoliths revealed 351 growth increments grouped into check-ring structures every 10–16 increments. A model for statolith growth and the pattern of temporal change in 14C in the water column was used to estimate the ages of the three specimens. These estimates were very sensitive to the choice of depth range over which 14C values were integrated. Assuming that the capture depths represented the maximum habitat depths of these individuals, the calculations suggested an age of 14 years or less. More refined age estimates require a better understanding of the variation of 14C and temperature with depth in the areas in which the squids live.Communicated by J.P. Feeding, respiration and growth rates of oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) larvae reared at five food levels were measured throughout the entire larval period. Energy budgets were derived as a function of alga (Isochrysis galbana Parke) food concentration. Ingestion rate (IR, cells h-1) and oxygen consumption rate ( , nl h-1) were almost isometric functions of larval size [ash-free dry weight, (AFDW, g)], characterized by the equations: IR=803.9 AFDW1.13 and =4.85 AFDW1.09. Ingested ration was directly correlated to cell concentration up to a maximum at 200 cells l-1, with further increases failing to support higher ingestion rates. Likewise, growth rate linearly increased with food ration up to 100 cells l-1 (max. growth efficiency,K 1=25%) and reached a maximum at 200 cells l-1 (growth rate=5.6 m d-1), with further increases in food not supporting significantly faster growth. Maintenance ration was 2 to 3% daily dry weight (DW); optimum ration increased during larval development from 5 to 20% DW; maximum ration was 20% DW. During larval rearing, an increasing feeding schedule of 50, 100 and 200 cells l-1 from Days 0, 5 and 10, respectively, is recommended.  相似文献

Summary Whirligig beetles aggregate in the daytime into dense single-and multispecies groups (rafts) of hundreds or thousands of individuals. On the 22km shoreline of Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota, these aggregations were on the average 0.8 km apart, and they were usually found day after day in the same ocations.Most beetles apparently do not home to the aggregation of their origin after dispersing at night because (a) the species composition of some aggregations changed greatly, and (b) paint-marked beetles (Dineutus horni) moved overnight from one aggregation as far as 4km, joining 11 of the 14 large (>300 beetles) D. horni groups on the lake.Throughout the night, the largest concentrations of beetles remained within 100m of the diurnal aggregation sites. Beetles reconvened into the compact rafts before daybreak, in part by following each other in sometimes long single files or trains. Their forward motion stopped after they joined large number of other beetles. We infer that following behavior enables those individuals that have dispersed from their original aggregations (during their nocturnal foraging) to find and join other aggregations before daylight.Naive fish ate the beetles despite their noxious secretions. However, fish living near rafting sites and feeding on insects on the water surface in daylight should soon learn to avoid the beetles. The rafting sites would then become safe places. We observed fish attacking only those beetles that had been either dispersed from their rafts or released into open water away from raft sites in the daytime. We speculate that the evolutionary significance of the aggregation behavior is related to predator (fish) avoidance.  相似文献

Routine oxygen uptake (QO2) by yolk-sac and firstfeeding larvae of herring (Clupea harengus L.) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.) was studied after acute change of temperature (8°, 13°, 18°C) and salinity (5, 12.7, 32, 40). In both species, QO2 (l mg-1 dry wt h-1) of both larval stages increased with increasing temperature. Salinity effect on QO2 varied: for yolk-sac larvae of both species a lower QO2 was found at lower combined salinities (5 and 12.7); for feeding larvae a lower QO2 was observed at 12.7 for both species, possibly due to the relatively smaller size of larvae used at this salinity. For both species, oxygen uptake increased as larvae grew and weight regression coefficients were between 0.74 and 1.33.
