Coastal erosion may be caused by natural causes as well as human factors. Karasu town of the city of Sakarya in Turkey which is a touristic region on the Black Sea coast has been experienced a drastic coastal erosion. In recent years, this erosion reached the threatening dimensions for the structures in the settlement. According to the temporal analyses of Landsat satellite images, the maximum erosion on the coastline was detected 100 m between 1987–2013. The results of the study show that the harbour construct on the Karasu coast has the major impact on this event. The secondary factor is that the amount of the sediment carried by the Sakarya River was decreased in time due to different reasons. To prevent the coastal erosion, a series of offshore breakwaters were planned after the failed application of groins on the coastline. In this study, temporal changes of the coastline are investigated by the Landsat satellite data and land surveys, possible reasons of the erosion are discussed and the solutions are proposed regarding the coastal structures. 相似文献

Coastal erosion is a serious environmental problem that has caused the loss of private infrastructure and national assets along Ghana’s coast. Several hard engineering measures have thus been used to protect some communities and vital state assets when they became threatened. Regardless of this problem, sediment mining activities are increasingly practiced along most of Ghana’s coast, further exacerbating coastal erosion intensity and degrading coastal ecosystems. This paper provides an overview of the activities of coastal sediment miners along four administrative Districts in the Central Region of Ghana and identifies how issues arising from the practice are managed at the local community level as well as by state environmental regulators. The study uses a mixed-method approach, involving individual and group interviews, administration of a set of structured questionnaire and field observations, to identify coastal sediment mining and emerging management issues. Overall, three main categories of coastal sediment mining activities were identified in the area. Results indicate that coastal sediment mining is widely practiced by both commercial contractors and community members, giving rise to the high perception among residents that it is the reason for the degradation of the coastline in the studied areas. The study also established that state environmental regulators have weak inter-agency cooperation leading to poor enforcement of environmental laws and non-prosecution of offending individuals. The paper suggests that since each identified sediment mining activity has its own peculiar issues and mode of operation, coastal managers should address each category independently in order to derive lasting impacts in curtailing the practice. 相似文献

National assessment of coastal vulnerability to sea-level rise for the Chinese coast 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Sea-level rise as a result of climate change increases inundation and erosion, which are affected by a complex interplay of
physical environmental parameters at the coast. China’s coast is vulnerable to accelerated sea-level rise and associated coastal
flooding because of physical and socio-economical factors such as its low topography, highly developed economy, and highly
dense population. To identify vulnerable sections of the coast, this paper presents a national assessment of the vulnerability
of the Chinese coast using 8 physical variables: sea-level rise, coastal geomorphology, elevation, slope, shoreline erosion,
land use, mean tide range, and mean wave height. A coastal vulnerability index was calculated by integrating the differentially
weighted rank values of the 8 variables, based on which the coastline is segmented into 4 classes. The results show that 3%
of the 18,000-km-long Chinese coast is very highly vulnerable, 29% is highly vulnerable, 58% is moderately vulnerable, and
10% is in the low-vulnerable class. Findings further reveal that large amounts of land and population will be vulnerable to
inundation by coastal flooding from sea level rise and storm surge. Finally, some suggestions are presented for decision makers
and other concerned stakeholders to develop appropriate coastal zone management and mitigation measures. 相似文献

Traditionally the coastal zone of the easternmost (Russian) part of the Gulf of Finland has not been considered as an area of active litho- and morphodynamics, but a recent study has shown that the easternmost part of the coastal zone suffers from erosion. Within some coastal segments the shoreline recession rate reaches 2 ?C 2.5?m/year. As well as determining the hydrodynamic reasons for recent erosion acceleration, important geological and geomorphic features of coastal zone which influenced the lithodynamics were established. The Kurortny District of St.Petersburg is located along the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland to the west of the St. Petersburg Flood Protection Facility. It has special importance as a unique recreation zone of the North-West of Russia. Coastal erosion is one of the most serious problems of the area. The analysis of historical materials, archive aerial photographs and modern high-resolution satellite images have shown that advancing parts of coast are almost non-existant with most sections of the coast being eroded and further retreating. Field monitoring between 2004 and 2007 showed intense damage to sandy beaches during autumn and winter storms and progressive erosion of the dunes system. Among the most important natural reasons for the erosion processes are that the coastline is open to storm waves induced by westerly and south-westerly winds, the geological structure of coastal area (easily eroded Quaternary deposits) and a sediment deficit. In some areas sediment loss was the result of the submarine coastal slope morphology (a steep slope of a narrow submarine terrace within the area of sediment drift discharge), with erosion of an alongshore submarine sandy terrace and erosion runnels at the depth 8?C12?m. The situation becomes worse due to anthropogenic impact. The southern coastal zone dynamics are also very active. According to an aerial and satellite photos analysis from 1975?C1976 to 1989?C1990, sandy beaches to the west of Lebyazhye village were eroded up to 30?m, and near Bolshaya Izora village up to 70?m. The comparison of coastine GPSsurvey with old nautical and topographic charts published in the 1980s shows the considerable change. 相似文献

GIS assessment of coastal vulnerability to climate change and coastal adaption planning in Vietnam 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Isaac Boateng 《Journal of Coastal Conservation》2012,16(1):25-36
Vietnam’s coastal zone provides a diverse range of natural resources and favourable conditions for social and economic development.
However, its coastal ecosystems are highly vulnerable, due to several natural coastal hazards, over-exploitation and other
human activities. In spite of diverse interventions, Vietnam’s coastal zone continues to experience significant damage from
floods, erosion and typhoons. These hazards are being intensified by climate change and associated rising sea levels. This
paper assesses the potential vulnerability of Vietnam’s coast to climate change and discusses possible adaptation policies
and plan to reduce the impacts. GIS analysis was used for the assessment of coastal vulnerability. Related literature was
reviewed to develop detailed understanding of coastal adaptation to climate change. Adaptation policies and plans were appraised
to identify potential coastal adaptation policies and plans that could be adapted by Vietnam. It was identified that vulnerability
of the coastal zone of Vietnam could not be attributed only to climatic factors, but also to the physical condition of the
coastline. Much of Vietnam’s coastline, particularly, areas around the Red River delta and the Mekong River have elevations
below 1 m. These coastlines are largely developed and serve as economic centres of the country, which makes the coast more
vulnerable to climate change and the rising sea level. The paper concluded that a non-structural approach (coastal buffer
zones, building houses on stilts, storm warning systems, growing of flood-resistant crops and elevated storm shelters with
medicine and food storage) could be used by Vietnam to adapt her low-lying coastline around the two deltas to climate change
as this strategy enables vulnerable areas to be occupied for longer before eventual retreat. However, for these policies to
be successful, it should be planned, implemented well in advance, monitored and evaluated over time. 相似文献

In response to climate change, coastal communities are expected to experience increasing coastal impacts of sea-level rise (SLR). Strategies formulated and implemented to curb these impacts can thus be more effective if scientific findings on the response to climate change and SLR impacts on coastal communities are taken into consideration and not based merely on the need for coastal protection due to physical coastal erosion. There is also the need to determine the level of awareness of sea-level rise and responses in coastal communities to improve adaptation planning. This study assesses the impact of future erosion on the coastal land cover of Ghana. This assessment estimates approximately 2.66 km2, 2.77 km2, and 3.24 km2 of coastal settlements, 2.10 km2, 2.20 km2 and 2.58 km2 of lagoons, 1.39 km2, 1.46 km2 and 1.71 km2 of wetlands to be at risk of inundation by the year 2050 based on coastal erosion estimates for the 2.6, 4.5 and 8.5 Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) used in the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This study also assesses the level of awareness of respondents to SLR on the coast of Ghana and explores the availability and level of integration of scientific knowledge of SLR into coastal adaptation strategies in Ghana. Assessment of the awareness of SLR responses to the changing climate in Ghana is made through semi-structured interviews at national, municipal/district and coastal community scales. Although settlements may be inundated based on the coastal erosion estimates, coastal dwellers interviewed cherish their proximity to the sea and are determined to maintain their occupancy close to the sea as spatial location influences their source of livelihood (fishing). Respondents lack knowledge/understanding of SLR, as the majority of household interviewees attributed the rise or fall in sea level to God. Respondents from Ngiresia alleged that the ongoing coastal sea defence project in their community has led to increased malaria cases. 相似文献

The structure of coastal land cover in Estonia is intricate and exhibits considerable differences from site to site. The diverse geomorphology of the seashores is one of the key factors affecting the speed and magnitude of land cover changes. Likewise, the history of human inhabitance on the coast has also shaped the character of land cover. The Estonian coastal zone has experienced abrupt and radical changes in land ownership and its related land use during the last century. The main objectives of this paper are: 1) to give an overview of land use and the trends of development of land cover pattern along different parts of the Estonian coast; and 2) to analyze the relationships of natural and human processes and their cumulative impact on the evolution of coastal land cover pattern in Estonia. This study is based on results obtained during fieldwork in the study areas and on the analysis of large-scale (1:10,000) historical maps. In agriculturally dominant coastal areas, the traditional open landscape of fields and grassland at the beginning of the 20th century had been replaced by woodland and grasslands with shrubs by the start of the 21st century. Expansion of reed beds in areas of former seashore grasslands is another striking phenomenon. The structure of land cover on forested coasts has been fairly stable during the last 100 years. Areas of urban sprawl are characterised by dramatic changes in land cover structure. Rapidly increasing population and expanding settlements imposes on the ecological balance of the fragile dune forests in the coastal zone. 相似文献

The Coastal Vulnerability and Exposure Degree (CVED) of the Gran Canaria Island and the coastal risk of Playa de Las Canteras (Las Palmas de G.C.) have been assessed by means of a GIS analysis. The evaluation of coastal vulnerability (H) has been performed by using two different levels of analysis: the first one regarding the entire Island (Coastal Vulnerability Index method - CVI), the second one regarding specifically Las Canteras Beach, selected for its socio-economic importance (Coastal Vulnerability Assessment method - CVA). The application of the CVI method, based on geologic-geomorphologic and meteomarine data easily available, has allowed the regional scale assessment of coastal vulnerability (H) along the Gran Canaria coastline and, therefore, the individuation of more critical coast stretches deserving further analysis. The application of the CVA method, based on more specific morphologic-sedimentary beach features that allow to consider both the beach retreat due to storm surge and the coastal inundation due to run-up on the beach, has provided a large scale detail on the coastal vulnerability of Las Canteras Beach. Socio-economic and damage indexes have been determined for the 15 coastal municipalities included in the study area and, by means of the resulting matrix product, the degree of exposure (Ex) along the Gran Canaria coast has been assessed. Finally, the combination of coastal vulnerability and exposure levels has allowed to obtain the Coastal Vulnerability and Exposure Degree (CVED) for the entire Island and the risk levels that characterize specifically Las Canteras Beach. Major results in terms of CVED highlight prevailing low vulnerability and exposure levels along the western coast, and overall high vulnerability and exposure levels along the eastern coast, from Las Palmas de G.C. to San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The focus made on Playa de Las Canteras has allowed to identify the areas characterized by medium and high risk levels that represent approximately one third (940 m) of the entire beach and are located in its central part. The used two-level analysis approach has proved its efficiency by highlighting the degree of coastal vulnerability along the study coast and, especially, more critical coast stretches (CVI method) such as the Playa de Las Canteras that can be successfully analysed with the CVA approach allowing for a large-scale assessment of risk aspects, essential for a correct definition of priority management strategies. Results obtained with the present study, along with the awareness of the increasing phenomena of coastal erosion and marine flooding arising on the mid-long term due to the effects of global climate change, highlight the need for the competent public administrations of Gran Canaria to develop a strategic approach to coastal management and sustainable development that considers as a whole socio-economic values and natural resources, coastal vulnerability and exposure degree, and risk aspects. 相似文献

The practice of coastal zone management in Portugal is very recent. Key issues and considerations about natural shoreline
dynamics, main policy instruments, and lessons learned from the EU Demonstration Programmes on Integrated Coastal Zone Management
in Portugal will be outlined in this paper in an attempt to understand how the practice of ICZM and its prospects are. Coastal
zone management problems and their associated side effects, as well as national and international evolution patterns will
be drawn. Some means of achieving better coastal zone management practices and ways of addressing some of its forefront issues
are also identified. Special attention will go to erosion problems. The pressure induced by urban development and economic
activities on coastal areas is increasing. Poor sediment availability combined with years of neglected management and over-exploitation
of resources have had a negative impact, and there are many areas showing evidence of coastal erosion. There is a need to
improve policies and instruments of coastal planning and management. Coastal zone management plans are being developed for
the nine sectors of the continental Portuguese coast, providing a full analysis of coastal systems and a delimitation of uses
in relation to the carrying capacity of the shoreline. 相似文献

To improve the present national and local sustainable planning capability for the coastal zone a GI application for the Italian
Coastal Susceptibility Assessment was planned within an institutional agreement between ENEA and the Land Defence Service
of the Italian Ministry of Environment. Taking into account previous European actions a suitable methodology to assess, in
a quantitative way, the susceptibility of beaches to be eroded has been set up.
The methodology balances the coastline trend as evaluated for a defined time period with the present coastal areas morphology
and land use, this in order to derive a value that expresses the evolutionary process in terms of probability of the loss
of goods within the ‘Homogeneous Coastal Tracts’.
The trend in the movement of the sea-land line has been used asgeo-indicator of a complex dynamic balance that refers both to marine and inland systems, and a vector GI application was built and locally
applied in southern Italian coastal areas.
The present shoreline position and some other information describing the intrinsic beach morphologies, and having significance
for the coastal erosion hazard assessment, have been derived from the national 1∶10.000 ortho-images of the National Cartographic
Reference System provided by the Italian Ministry of Environment. The illustrated GI application— CoSTAT—keeps the nominal
scale of all data collected or produced. In this analysis the coastal dune presence is analysed as factor limiting coastal
erosion susceptibility. Applying a matrix calculation a quantitative evaluation of erosion susceptibility degree was achieved
and plans were made to develop new information for a suitable use of Italian coastal areas.
The work describes the methodology, the conceptual frame-work and the results of a local application. 相似文献

The threat of sea-level rise and climate change means that coastal managers are being increasingly asked to make long-term assessments of potential coastal impacts and responses. In the UK, shoreline management planning (for flood and erosion hazards) and spatial planning now takes a 100 year perspective. An integrated framework across a wide range of physical and social issues is required for the assessment of coastal impacts and consequently for making sound management decisions. This paper provides an overview of the development of the ‘Tyndall Coastal Simulator’ including the underlying philosophy that is being followed. The Simulator is based on a series of linked climate models (CM) within a nested framework which recognises three spatial scales: (i) the global (GCM) scale; (ii) the regional scale and (iii) the Simulator Domain (a physiographic unit, such as a coastal sub-cell). Within the nesting, the larger scale provides the boundary conditions for the smaller scale. The models feed into each other and describe a range of relevant processes: sea level, tides, surges, waves, sediment transport and coastal morphology. Different climate scenarios, as well as the range of uncertainty, are being explored. Communication of results is a major issue and the Simulator includes a dedicated GIS-based user interface that allows a wide range of queries of model outputs. The paper demonstrates the possibility of developing an integrated framework that is multi-scale and capable of linking various models in order to simulate complex coastal processes and consequently allowing long-term assessments that are useful for setting future management plans. 相似文献

Coastal zones in Portugal, as interface areas between land and sea, have problems related to the growing human pressure in
terms of changes in land use associated with urban and industrial occupation, new accessibility (ports, motorways) and traffic
flows, intensification of recreational use (beaches, water sports) and excessive fishing. Impacts include deterioration of
water quality and sediments; alteration and degradation of natural habitats; new hydrodynamic situations; major landscape
changes: and rapid changes in habits and way of life of the local populations and increased exposure of populations and assets
to natural and induced risks (storms, accidents, spills, explosions).
Plans for the Management of the Coastal Zone (POOC) have been developed and seven of them have been approved, while two similar
plans are at a final stage of preparation. Together they cover the entire coast of Portugal. Their implementation and assessment
could be a first step towards an integrated management of the Portuguese coastal zones. River Basin Management Plans (PBH)
have been concluded and recently approved for the whole country. However, these plans do not consider estuarine systems and
some other issues related to coastal systems. The National Water Plan (PNA) is under public presentation and discussion. Several
‘key messages’ are presented in this paper as a contribution for assessment of the proposals of this plan on issues related
with coastal waters. 相似文献

Abstract There are three major factors affecting the coastal environment in Taiwan: tidal current, long-shore current and land subsidence. in Taiwan, most industrial areas are located on the southwestern coast. Most of the pollutants from the factories are discharged directly to the ocean, harbours or rivers. the pollutants in harbours or rivers will eventually be delivered to coastal waters. There, the tidal current is the major force dispersing the pollutants nearshore. the polluted water extends to an area about 5 km on both sides from the discharge source, and within about 3–4 km off-shore. in this study, Hsien-Da Harbour in southwestern Taiwan is cited to explain the effects of tidal current on the coastal environment. the long-shore current induced by breaking waves is the major force shaping the coastal morphology. Along the western coast of Taiwan, the long-shore current mainly flows northward along the southern section, and southward along the northern section. in the last one hundred years, in general, the coast has been eroded along the northern and southern sections of western coast, and some reclaimed lands were formed in the middle section. Recently, erosion in some coastal zones is quite serious because of excess groundwater extraction, especially along the southwestern coast. Groundwater extraction might also induce land subsidence. There are some areas near the coast which suffer serious land subsidence problems. 相似文献

In The Netherlands shoreline retreat is actively counteracted, mostly by means of beach nourishment in which some allowance
is made for natural fluctuations.
For some parts of the coast, however, a more active socalled ‘seaward coastal defence strategy’ might be more profitable.
This applies to coasts with a small dune ridge subject to severe erosion. According to this strategy the morphological system
is influenced in such a way that erosion is prevented, which will result in a stable or even an accretion coastline.
The effectiveness of the seaward coastal defence strategy has to be compared with maintenance by beach nourishment. The effects
on the morphological system, the environment and other interests must also be analysed. Several seaward solutions are possible.
In order to gain more insight into the behaviour of these solutions, comparative pilot studies have been executed for the
most vulnerable locations.
This paper gives an overview of the main conclusions of the pilot studies in comparison with sand nourishment, the main coastal
defence measure. 相似文献

The most recent intervention on the coastline of Espinho, located on the Portuguese West Atlantic coast, was part of the General
Plan for Coastal Protection in 1980/81. As a result, two unusually large groins/headlands were built which were reinforced
and enlarged in 1997, slightly changing their geometry and orientation. However, due to the decreased sediment supply from
the north and the impact of energetic sea conditions common to the northwest coast of Portugal the coastal evolution has not
developed as desired, although in general terms the initial expectations were fulfilled. The numerical modelling of the Espinho
coastline using SMC software focused on both hydrodynamic and hydromorphological aspects. The purpose of this study is to
analyse the most vulnerable areas of the Espinho seafront for current velocities and littoral drift, as well as to confirm
the effectiveness of the two groins in terms of coastal protection. To achieve this, various simulations were performed, taking
into account diverse sea conditions. 相似文献

Climate change impacts on a large-scale erosion coast of Hai Hau district,Vietnam and the adaptation
Do Minh Duc Kazuya Yasuhara Nguyen Manh Hieu Nguyen Chau Lan 《Journal of Coastal Conservation》2017,21(1):47-62
Among the effects of global warming, sea level rise (SLR) and severe typhoons pose the greatest threat to the stability of human settlements along coastlines. Therefore, countermeasures must be developed to mitigate the influences of strong typhoons and persistent SLR for coastal protection. This study assesses climate change impacts on coastal erosion, especially in two projected SLR scenarios of RCP2.6 and RCP8.5. The results show that SLR and severe typhoons lead to the increase of coastal erosion, beach lowering and scour. Moreover, as in projected SLR scenarios, average waves in high tide can cause severe soil erosion at inner slopes and lead to dyke failure by 2060. The paper highlights the need for additional countermeasures to protect the coast of Hai Hau district against SLR and severe typhoons. Among the alternatives available for countering these threats, applying soil stabilization and soil improvement combined with geosynthetics are promising strategies for coastal structures. Hybrid structures can be used with earth reinforcement and soil improvement. Additionally, the paper emphasizes the importance of multiple protective adaptations, including geosynthetics and ecological engineering measures against climate change-induced severe erosion on the coast of Hai Hau district. 相似文献

the need to develop a georeferenced data base for land management. The Coastal Assessment and Restoration project aimed to
document the natural resources and coastal developments to the region and to identify & assess threats to the coastal strip
through the creation of GIS datasets. GIS datasets provide a key source of reference information which can be accessed by
a number of stakeholders for future coastal planning and management and provide a basis for developing a risk management assessment
of the coastal zone and a strategy for coastal managers in our climate change future. 相似文献

Oyster reefs form over extensive areas and the diversity and productivity of sheltered coasts depend on them. Due to the relatively recent population growth of coastal settlements in Australia, we were able to evaluate the collapse and extirpation of native oyster reefs (Ostrea angasi) over the course of a commercial fishery. We used historical records to quantify commercial catch of O. angasi in southern Australia from early colonization, around 1836, to some of the last recorded catches in 1944 and used our estimates of catch and effort to map their past distribution and assess oyster abundance over 180 years. Significant declines in catch and effort occurred from 1886 to 1946 and no native oyster reefs occur today, but historically oyster reefs extended across more than 1,500 km of coastline. That oyster reefs were characteristic of much of the coastline of South Australia from 1836 to 1910 appears not to be known because there is no contemporary consideration of their ecological and economic value. Based on the concept of a shifted baseline, we consider this contemporary state to reflect a collective, intergenerational amnesia. Our model of generational amnesia accounts for differences in intergenerational expectations of food, economic value, and ecosystem services of nearshore areas. An ecological system that once surrounded much of the coast and possibly the past presence of oyster reefs altogether may be forgotten and could not only undermine progress towards their recovery, but also reduce our expectations of these coastal ecosystems. Accelerated sea level rise and hurricanes are increasingly influencing human coastal activities. With respect to the projected
continuation of accelerated sea level rise and global warming one must count with additional expenses for adaptation strategies
along the coasts. On the mountainous island Martinique the majority of settlements are situated along the coast almost at
sea level. But potential rises in sea level and its impacts are not addressed in coastal management, even though saltwater
intrusion and coastal erosion with increasing offshore loss of sediment are locally already a severe problem. At a sea level
rise of 50 cm, one fourth of Martinique’s coastline will be affected by erosion and one fifth of the islands surface will
have high probability to get flooded during coastal hazards. This is a growth of 5% of the impact area in comparison to present
conditions. This article analyses potential adaptation strategies and argues that the development of a coastal zone management
plan considering sea level rise and its impact area is of utmost importance. Empirical assessment models in combination with
spatial analysis are useful in obtaining statements about coastal impacts concerning sea level rise. This paper sees itself
as recommendation of action not only for Martinique.
