Weight-specific contents of asorbic acid, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, biotin, folate and vitamin B12 were analysed in natural zooplankton collected from a sea water lagoon in a halibut fry production plant. The samples of natural zooplankton were collected from April/May to the end of June during two consecutive spring blooms. For comparison, the same vitamins were measured in nauplii of Artemia franciscana, just after hatching and after enrichment for 24 and 48 h with a commercial diet. The changes in vitamin content in zooplankton, which consisted mainly of Temora longicornis, during the two spring blooms were <2.5-fold for each specific vitamin. The large number of high quality halibut fry produced using the plankton as a dietary source suggests that the plankton contained sufficient amounts of all water-soluble vitamins. With the exception of thiamin and ascorbic acid, Artemia– both newly hatched and enriched for 24 and 48 h – contained higher levels of water-soluble vitamins than natural zooplankton. 为探究2种具有较高药用和观赏价值的鼠尾草对酸雨的耐受性及其生理机制,以美丽鼠尾草(Salvia meiliensis S.W.Su)和贵州鼠尾草(S. cavaleriei Lévl.)为试验材料,分析了2种鼠尾草在不同pH(6.8、5.6、4.5、3.5和2.5)模拟酸雨胁迫下伤害等级、叶绿素含量、抗氧化酶活性以及丙二醛和有机渗透调节物质含量的变化。结果显示:模拟酸雨对美丽鼠尾草的伤害程度高于贵州鼠尾草;随pH的下降,2种鼠尾草叶片叶绿素a、b和总含量逐渐降低,但贵州鼠尾草叶片叶绿素a、b和总含量高于美丽鼠尾草,并以较高的叶绿素a/b适应模拟酸雨胁迫;2种鼠尾草在模拟酸雨胁迫下产生了适应性反应,表现为叶片可溶性糖、可溶性蛋白和脯氨酸含量以及超氧化物歧化酶和过氧化物酶活性的升高,但这一适应性反应被降低的过氧化氢酶活性严重削弱;模拟酸雨胁迫下,贵州鼠尾草叶片SOD、POD和CAT活性均高于美丽鼠尾草,叶片MDA含量低于美丽鼠尾草。研究表明,尽管美丽鼠尾草渗透调节能力很强,但其抗氧化酶活性、叶绿素含量和叶绿素a/b都低于贵州鼠尾草,使其膜脂过氧化程度较高、对光能的吸收和转化效率较低,是其对模拟酸雨的耐受性低于贵州鼠尾草的重要原因。  相似文献

Acute toxicity tests were carried out on the marine amphipod Allorchestes compressa Dana using copper sulphate and some organocopper complexes. For copper sulphate, 96 h LC50 values of 0.11 and 0.5 mg Cu l-1 were determined for the juveniles and the adults, respectively, juveniles being 4.5 times more sensitive to copper than adults. Organocopper complexes were tested on adults only. The three water-soluble ligands nitrilotriacetic acid, 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid and tannic acid ameliorated copper toxicity by decreasing the concentration of free ionic copper, while lipid-soluble ligands such as oxine and potassium ethylxanthogenate increased copper toxicity, presumably as a result of the complexes diffusing through the cell membrane and participating in injurious reaction. The copper complex with 2,9-dimethyll, 10-phenanthroline was the most toxic complex tested. It is suggested that the presence of these ligands in the receiving water should be taken into consideration when establishing water-quality criteria.  相似文献

Freshly harvested cells of Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin grown with nitrate, ammonium or lysine as a sole nitrogen source had a low ability to take up lysine or arginine, but this ability increased when cells were deprived, over 48 h, of either nitrogen or carbon. The effects of nitrogen and carbon deprivation were additive, and the uptake ability was greatest in cells incubated in darkness in nitrogen-free medium. Uptake ability increased in cells illuminated in the presence of 10-5 M 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (DCMU) an inhibitor of photosynthetic electron transport. An inverse relationship between rate of development of the uptake system and rate of photosynthesis was also established. Development of the uptake system was prevented by cycloheximide or by anaerobiosis. Following transfer to a normal nitrate medium, illuminated cells lost the lysineuptake system by dilution as the cells grew. There was a linear and positive correlation between the initial rate of uptake of lysine and the maximum concentration which was maintained in the cells when equilibrium was reached, indicating that transinhibition of lysine uptake may occur and that the extent of this inhibition is related to the size of the internal amino acid pool. The relevance of the findings to the growth of phytoplankton in natural waters is discussed.  相似文献

Ozone, chlorine and sodium hypochlorite are commonly used as disinfecting agents for drinking water production. The reaction pathways of ozonation and chlorination of o-methoxybenzoic acid in aqueous solution were studied using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results show that less than 1% of o-methoxybenzoic acid remains in reaction. The final major products using ozone oxidation are oxalic and glyoxalic acids. Phenols appear only at insufficient ozone levels. Sodium hypochlorite leads to higher levels of primary products. Molecular chlorine leads to the formation of higher amounts of polychlorinated derivatives. Model experiments allow to propose schemes of o-methoxybenzoic acid transformation under the conditions simulating water treatment processes.  相似文献

Summary. An important question in insect-plant interactions is which of the numerous plant compounds contribute to the perception of odour qualities in herbivorous insects and are likely to be used as cues in host-searching behaviour. In order to identify which plant-produced volatiles the strawberry blossom weevil Anthonomus rubi detects, we have used electrophysiological recordings from single olfactory neurones linked to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. We here present 15 receptor neurone types specialised for naturally produced compounds present in the host and nonhost plants and two types for two aggregation pheromone components. The active compounds were terpenoids, aromatic and aliphatic esters, alcohols and aldehydes, some of which are induced by feeding activity of the weevils. The neurones were characterised by a strong response to one or two primary odorants and weaker responses to a few others having similar chemical structure. With one exception, the molecular receptive range of each neurone type was within one chemical group. Enantiomers of linalool separated on a chiral column activated two neurone types with different enantioselectivity. Inhibition by linalool of another neurone type, excited by α-pinene, indicated an additional mechanism for coding the information about this compound. Altogether, detection of 54 compounds by olfactory receptor neurones is shown, of which 40 have been chemically identified in this study. Thus A. rubi has the ability to detect a large number of odorants that may be used in host selection behaviour.  相似文献

The effects of soil pH and other soil properties on the uptake of AI by soybean plants have been investigated in a greenhouse experiment. Six soils were compared that were developed over six contrasting bedrock types ranging widely in their AI content and other chemical and physical characteristics, namely Oxford Clay, Chalk, Lower Lias Clay, Devonian Shale, Granite and Lower Greensand. Soil pH varied naturally between soil types and each soil was also amended to give two other pH levels using elemental sulphur and/or calcium carbonate. AI concentrations in various parts of the soybean plants were determined by ICP-AES after acid digestion. The AI solubility in the soils and hence its availability to the plants was estimated using a number of different reagents designed to extract different forms of AI. The AI concentration measured in the soybean leaves was found to be predicted most accurately by the ‘available’ AI extracted from soils by 0.02 M CaCl2. The relationship appears to the linear, with a correlation coefficient of 0.97 (p <0.01). The AI content of the leaves increases with decreasing soil pH. The relationship is non-linear with a marked increase in leaf AI for soils with pH <4.4. The amounts of ‘plant-available’ AI in the soils extracted with 0.02 M CaCl2 was much less than that extracted with 0.05 M EDTA, although both increased markedly with decreasing soil pH. The amount of AI measured in the soybean plants was directly related to both the ‘available’ forms of AI in the soils, and also to the pH of the soils. Soil pH was identified as a major factor that controls the uptake of Al from soil into the soybean plant.  相似文献

Egg production and hatching success of the copepod Temora longicornis were measured in laboratory experiments and in the field (North Sea). In the laboratory, ingestion of four algal species (Thalassiosira weissflogii, Phaeocystis globosa, Isochrysis sp. and Dunaliella tertiolecta) was followed and the content of fatty acids in the algae was determined. The two food types (T. weissflogii and Isochrysis sp.) that provided the highest ingestion of carbon and long chain fatty acids also resulted in the highest egg production rate (Er) and hatching success (H%). In contrast, D. tertiolecta led to both low ingestion of carbon and long chain fatty acids, resulting in low reproductive success. There was a positive relationship between the amount of eicosapentaenoic fatty acid [20:5(n-3), EPA] ingested and Er and H%, and of the ratio between docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic fatty acid [22:6(n-3)/20:5(n-3), DHA/EPA] in the ingested food and H%. In the field, chlorophyll a and specific fatty acids were measured and protists were enumerated, in order to investigate the link between these factors and the reproductive success of T. longicornis. Hatching time was found to be related to temperature and exceeded 120 h at 6°C. No relationship was found between chlorophyll a and reproductive success (Er or H%). Er correlated with the concentration of diatoms and ciliates, which were the dominating protists in early spring, indicating that food quantity was the limiting factor for Er. As in the laboratory experiments, H% was dependent on the fatty acid DHA and the ratio of DHA/EPA, which indicates that the quality of eggs (H%) is linked to the quality of food.Communicated by M. The known negative effects of shellfish toxin-producing dinoflagellates on feeding, burrowing and survival of some bivalve mollusks has prompted questions concerning whether they might also impair the internal defense system of affected bivalves and make them more susceptible to disease agents. The primary components of the cellular defense system are hemocytes. Many toxic dinoflagellates are too large to be ingested whole by hemocytes and would most likely be exposed to intracellular toxins only after the algae are consumed, broken down, and the water-soluble toxins, released. Therefore, we conducted a series of experiments in which hemocytes from two suspension-feeding bivalves—the Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, and the softshell clam, Mya arenaria—were exposed in vitro to filtered extracts of one highly toxic paralytic shellfish toxin (PST)-producing and one nonPST-producing strain of Alexandrium tamarense (isolates PR18b, 76 ± 6 STXeq cell−1 and CCMP115, with undetectable PST, respectively). We measured adherence and phagocytosis, two hemocyte attributes known to be inhibited by bacterial pathogens and other stressors. We found no measurable effect of a cell-free extract from a highly concentrated suspension of the PST-producing strain on hemocytes of either bivalve species. Instead, extract from the nonPST-producing strain had a consistent negative effect on both clams, resulting in significantly lower adherence and phagocytosis compared to strain PR18b and filtered seawater controls. The bioactive compound produced by strain CCMP115, which has yet to be characterized, may be similar to the PST-independent allelopathic compounds described for Alexandrium spp., which act on other plankters. These compounds and those produced by other harmful algae are known to cause immobilization, cellular deformation and lysis of co-occurring target organisms. Thus, nonPST producing Alexandrium spp., which do not cause paralysis and burrowing incapacitation of clams, may still produce a compound(s) that has negative effects not only on hemocytes, but on other molluscan cell types and their functions, as well.  相似文献

The various chemical forms of 74As accumulated from either water or food by the marine food chain [Fucus spiralis (L.) Littorina littoralis (L.)Nucella lapillus] have been separated and characterized. Arsenic components were separated by differential extraction followed by high-voltage paper electrophoresis/paper chromatography of the water-soluble fraction and thin-layer chromatography of the lipid-soluble fraction. The algae assimilates arsenic mainly (60%) as one lipid-soluble compound with Rf=0.18, and 12 water-soluble organo-arsenic compounds as minor components. On the other hand, the snails, whether labelled from water or food, produce predominantly one major water-soluble organo-arsenic compound with Rf=0.66. This water-soluble arsenic compound was produced by the snails and not by intestinal microbes. Time-course studies on the relative proportions of labelled arsenic compounds in algal tissue indicate a transition from arsenate through water-soluble organo-arsenic components to a lipid-soluble arsenic compound. The water-soluble organo-arsenic compounds in the food chain studied were different from those previously found or proposed in marine organisms.  相似文献

The marine fish Mugil cephalus was caught in the Bay of Marseilles (France) in 1985 and the liver microsomal cytochrome P450 was identified at a concentration of about 0.230 nmol mg-1 protein. Optimal assay conditions were established to measure two mixed-function cytochrome P450-dependent oxidases: aniline hydroxylase and p-nitroanisole O-demethylase. Induction of cytochrome P450 occurred after exposure of mullet to an aromatic hydrocarbon and a water-soluble petroleum fraction. The liver cytochrome P450 was solubilized and purified. The monomer molecular weight of partially purified cytochrome P450, determined by sodium dodecyl-sulfate-gel electrophoresis, was 51 000.  相似文献

Toxicity of 4 components of petroleum oils to the marine amphipod Elasmopus pectenicrus (Bate) has been assessed. Two ephemeral aromatic hydrocarbons, naphthalene (A) and 1, 2, 4-trimethylbenzene (B) were more toxic than two persistent aromatics, o-cresol (C) and o-toluidine (D). The acute toxicity concentrations obtained for individual aromatic compounds were always greater than the actual concentrations found in the water-soluble fractions (WSF) of fuel oils. Results from mixtures of 2 or more components indicated that the LC50 levels were primarily determined by the more toxic substances, A and B. Naphthalene and 1, 2, 4-trimethylbenzene became more toxic to the E. pectenicrus when present in a mixture of more than 2 components, and the toxicity increased with increasing numbers of components present. Synergistic effects, therefore, possibly occur in the whole WSF. Summary The water-soluble antioxidant, L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C), proved elicitory to alterable anti-herbivory inGlycine max againstTrichoplusia ni larvae. Elicitation by vitamin C was influenced especially by dose, time after elicitation and space in the plant. Results allow an analogy between antioxidant and herbivory elicitation. Elicitation apparently involves a sulfhydryl-protein-dependent redox mechanism which can be significantly affected by antioxidants. Findings would also support a proposed common redox-based mechanism, involving the plasma membrane, for communication between plant and animal cells and their environments.  相似文献

We examined the relationship between swimming performance, wave exposure, and the distribution patterns of labrids on temperate rocky reefs, in comparison with previous functional analyses of a tropical assemblage. Visual censuses of the distribution and abundance of labrids across two major gradients of wave exposure (depth and aspect to prevailing winds) were made at two offshore islands near Port Stephens, New South Wales, Australia. Distinct shifts in species composition and abundance were evident between high and low wave exposure habitats on temperate rocky reefs, particularly between deep and shallow habitats on exposed reef fronts. The swimming performances of temperate labrids were assessed through examination of pectoral fin shape (aspect ratio) and in situ swimming speeds. A diversity of pectoral fin morphologies was exhibited within this temperate assemblage, ranging from rounded to tapered fins (aspect ratios of 0.52 and 1.43, respectively). Fin shape was strongly correlated (Pearsons correlation 0.884, P<0.001) with swimming speed (ranging from 1.05 and 3.06 body lengths s–1), in a relationship comparable to that observed in tropical labrids. Inter-specific differences in swimming ability provided some explanation for differences in the distribution and abundance of temperate labrids in relation to wave exposure. However, our findings suggest that although coral reef labrids appear to predominantly use high aspect-ratio fins to successfully occupy wave-exposed habitats, temperate labrids appear to be using an enhanced swimming ability through increased body size.Communicated by G.F. To test whether heterotrophic protists modify precursors of long chain n−3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCn−3PUFAs) present in the algae they eat, two algae with different fatty acid contents (Rhodomonas salina and Dunaliella tertiolecta) were fed to the heterotrophic protists Oxyrrhis marina Dujardin and Gyrodinium dominans Hulbert. These experiments were conducted in August 2004. Both predators and prey were analyzed for fatty acid composition. To further test the effects of trophic upgrading, the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa Dana was fed R. salina, D. tertiolecta, or O. marina that had been growing on D. tertiolecta (OM-DT) in March 2005. Our results show that trophic upgrading was species-specific. The presence of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the heterotrophic protists despite the lack of these fatty acids in the algal prey suggests that protists have the ability to elongate and desaturate 18:3 (n−3), a precursor of LCn−3PUFAs, to EPA and/or DHA. A lower content of these fatty acids was detected in protists that were fed good-quality algae. Feeding experiments with A. tonsa showed that copepods fed D. tertiolecta had a significantly lower content of EPA and DHA than those fed OM-DT. The concentration of EPA was low on both diets, while DHA content was highest in A. tonsa fed R. salina and OM-DT. These results suggest that O. marina was able to trophically upgrade the nutritional quality of the poor-quality alga, and efficiently supplied DHA to the next trophic level. The low amount of EPA in A. tonsa suggests EPA may be catabolized by the copepod.  相似文献

Interspecific competitive interactions among sessile epibenthos were studied by suspending PVC panels at Tomioka Bay, south Japan, for a maximum period of 16 mo. Interactions were monitored from photographs of a fixed area of the panels. Four panels were suspended during two different months in autumn 1991, and the development of the community was followed until December 1992. Altogether, 6511 interspecific overgrowth interactions were recorded, of which 37 resulted in standoffs and the rest in overgrowths. The competitive relationship observed in this sessile assemblage followed the pattern of a hierarchy with numerous backloops. Among the 36 species, belonging to the seven taxonomic groups encountered during the study, the colonial ascidian Didemnum moseleyi was recorded as the dominant species (with respect to competitive ability) while the barnacle Balanus trigonus was the weakest species. The month of panel exposure and whether or not the panel surface was shaded had a significant influence on the competitive ability of the sessile organisms. The order of hierarchy of the most dominant species changed with the month of panel submersion and its light conditions. Among the several abundant species tested, longer residence times were recorded for serpulid worms than for the colonial species. A significant, positive relationship was obtained between the areal cover of competitively dominant sessile organisms and the number of their interspecific interactions. From the short residence time of sessile organisms and the significant relationship between their areal cover and number of interspecific interactions, it is concluded that the interspecific interactions played important role in the species succession.  相似文献

Summary We describe the results of two studies of parasitic infection in the black grouse (Tetrao tetrix). The first deals with our own observations of lekking black grouse in which the parasite levels of two blood parasites, the protozoan Leucocytozoon lovati and microfilaria, probably produced by a nematode worm Splendidofilaria tuvensis, were scored. We also obtained measures of age, survival, number of copulations, body mass and length of the ornamental tail feathers (the lyre) of the lekking males. The second study analysed the data from Lund (1954) which involved eight gut parasites obtained from birds which were killed. In the first study we found higher levels of infection of Leucocytozoon in adults relative to young birds. Parasites had no effect on male survival and there was no correlation in infection between the two types of parasites. Birds infected with microfilaria had shorter tail ornaments. There was no relationship between parasitic infection and mating success. However, the data indicated that such a trend indeed may exist for Leucocytozoon and the most successful males on the leks were less often infected by Leucocytozoon than other males. Results of the second study showed a negative relationship between parasite load (a combined measure of all parasites) and both ornamental tail feather length and body mass. These observations are compatible with, but not conclusive evidence for, the hypothesis of Hamilton and Zuk (1982) on the evolution of secondary sexual characters, where females choose to mate with genetically resistant males which show their resistance by expressing larger and more showy secondary sexual characters. Alternative explanations for the observed patterns are: females avoid infected males for some immediate benefit; and/or parasite loads are indicators of general stress rather than genetical resistance. Under the latter hypothesis females could mate with more vigorous males for reasons unrelated to parasite resistance.  相似文献

Approximately 50% of the compounds in the water solubles from 4 fuel oils have been identified via gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. In addition to the well-described types of compounds (naphthalenes, benzenes) expected in water-soluble extracts we have found phenols, anilines, and indoles. Of these classes of compounds methyl, dimethyl, and trimethyl derivatives are present in relatively high concentrations. The water solubles from the 4 fuel oils showed considerably different inhibitory effects to growth of 6 microalgae, 2 blue-greens, 2 greens, and 2 diatoms. Two of the fuel-oil extracts, Baytown and Montana, were lethal to blue-green algae. This was in part traceable to their content of p-toluidine which was found to be toxic to Agmenellum quadruplicatum, Strain PR-6, 1 g in the algal lawn-pad assay and 100 g/l in liquid culture. The water-soluble fraction from New Jersey fuel oil was lethal to the 2 green algae, with lesser effects on the 2 blue-greens. The 2 estuarine diatoms used as test organisms were not greatly inhibited by Baytown, Montana, or New Jersey fuel-oil water-soluble extracts. However, earlier work with an American Petroleum Institute fuel oil and the diatom Thallassiosira pseudonana (3H) showed that 3H was a very sensitive organism. Water solubles from the Baton Rouge fuel oil were almost without effect on the growth of all 6 microalgae. On the basis of the work herein and earlier work, a very cautious viewpoint is advisable in generalizing on the toxicity or lack thereof of a given fuel oil on the growth of different kinds of microalgae. On the other hand, with water solubles from toxic fuel oils such as Baytown or New Jersey the data clearly suggest that their potential for environmental damage is high, either through selective or enrichment effects on natural populations or through a lowering of total primary production.  相似文献

In diet analyses of seabirds, fatty acid signatures (FAS) can be used to overcome biases due to differential digestion of prey and enable the analysis of very digested diet samples. We applied FAS analysis to stomach contents of a small sub-Antarctic seabird, the Thin-billed Prion Pachyptila belcheri, which feeds mainly on squid during incubation and on crustacea during chick rearing. This seasonal dietary switch of Thin-billed prions was reflected in differences in FAS in regurgitates, as were inter-annual differences in diet composition. A discriminant function analysis correctly classified 93.4% of cases with respect to year (2006–2008) and stage of the breeding cycle (incubation versus chick rearing). The dominant types of crustacea in the diet of Thin-billed prions (amphipods Themisto gaudichaudii, euphausiids, decapods Munida gregaria, and calanoid copepods) were distinguished well by characteristic FAS patterns. However, the FAS of the two main types of prey by volume, amphipods T. gaudichaudii and squid Gonatus antarcticus, were similar to each other. Although FAS were successfully applied in the analysis of prey in stomach contents of prions, FAS of some prey species were similar and may not be distinguishable from each other if used in quantitative diet analyses.  相似文献

Following yolk resorption, laboratory-reared larval Baltic herring (Clupea harengus L.) were exposed to two sequences of food restriction for 5 d and re-alimentation for 10 d. Comparisons regarding larval growth (standard length and content of water-soluble protein), mortality and content of the sum of trypsin and trypsinogen were made with larvae at a continuous high ration. Larvae exposed to varying prey abundance grew less in length than the control, and during the second high-ration period (Day 22 to 32) growth in length ceased. From the first low-ration period onwards, the content of water-soluble protein in these larvae was lower than that of the control larvae, and the survival rate of the low-high ration group was 59% compared to 77% in the larvae at a continuous high ration. In contrast, the effects of varying food availability were minor on larval content of trypsin and trypsinogen. Results are compared with previous findings in larval Clyde herring, and the effects of larval stock and timing and duration of food restriction on larval growth performance are discussed.  相似文献
