The octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) concentrations have been determined in aged samples of commercial pentachlorophenol (PCP), in wood protection formulations containing PCP and in wood treated with PCP as a preservative or as an anti-sapstain treatment. The concentrations of OCDD found in the various samples are within the range expected from the amount of commercial PCP initially present in the samples. In view of the known stability of OCDD the results are interpreted as indicating that the formulation, treatment and ageing processes have not led to any substantial conversion of PCP to OCDD; although one result indicates that outdoor exposure of treated samples increased the OCDD concentration by a factor of approximately 2 after 312 years. Analysis of aged samples of treated wood indicate that OCDD is lost much less rapidly from the wood than PCP.  相似文献

The results of a laboratory investigation on the leaching behaviour of wood treated with creosote and of untreated wood are reported. A special leaching test derived from the German standard method DEV S4 test (DIN 38414) has been developed. Samples were leached in deionized water, in a solution buffered at pH 4.7 and in a solution of humic substances. The organic fraction of the leachate was extracted using liquid-liquid extraction. The extracts were analysed qualitatively with GC/MSD and quantified with GC/FID. The results were compared with those of Soxhlet-extracts from creosote-treated wood.  相似文献

Wood and other environmental samples were collected from sites that produced beef with higher than average residues of dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD) and dibenzofuran (PCDF). Analyses of these samples for PCDD/Fs and pentachlorophenol (PCP) indicated that the high beef residues were associated with PCP-treated wood in the animal facilities. Concentrations of PCDD/Fs in wood as toxic equivalents ranged from 10 to 320,000 pg/g. These concentrations were closely related to the concentrations of PCP, indicating that analysis for PCP provides an economical method to identify wood with high concentrations of PCDD/Fs. Further evidence for the PCP-treated wood as the source of the beef residues is provided by the similarity of the congener profiles in beef from the sites and those profiles predicted from the profiles in wood.  相似文献

The toxicity of pentachlorophenol (PCP) on Chlorella pyrenidosa algae was investigated with specific attention given to possible variation of toxic effects with time. A concentration-effect relationship was observed in which there was significant inhibition of PCP on cell density and chlorophyll A content. The inhibition rate of PCP on cell density was dependent on exposure time. The IC50 values after exposure times of 2, 4 and 6 days for cell growth were 4.18 +/- 0.49, 3.49 +/- 0.40 and 3.30 +/- 0.26 mg/L, respectively. There was also inhibition of chlorophyll A production, which appeared to increase marginally with exposure time for a given concentration of PCP. The corresponding IC50 values on day 2, 4 and 6 were 2.30 +/- 0.12, 2.63 +/- 0.38 and 3.30 +/- 0.34 mg/L, respectively. The effect of PCP on nitrate reductase (NR), was first stimulation followed by an inhibition phase. It is postulated that the observed temporal changes in the activity of nitrate reductase (NR) may occur through the addition or loss of phosphorus in the NR protein.  相似文献

Wood samples impregnated with inorganic wood preservatives containing the elements arsenic, boron, chromium, copper, fluorine, and/or zinc were burned in a furnace. Three different kinds of ash were collected: furnace, boiler, and so-called fly ash. Analyses showed that the ash contained large amounts of elements originating from the inorganic wood preservatives. Further interest was focused on the leachability of the above-mentioned elements. For this purpose a laboratory batch leaching test according to the German Standard DIN 38 414 part 4 was chosen. The results indicate that the leachability is in a range where the release of these elements to the environment from deposited ash can be considered as detrimental.  相似文献

We investigated the acute impact of trinitrotoluene (TNT) contamination of soil on the aerobic bacterial community composition and function. The contamination of the environment with explosive residues presents a serious problem at sites across the world, with the highly toxic compound TNT being the most widespread explosive contaminant. We investigated the acute impact of trinitrotoluene (TNT) contamination of soil on the aerobic bacterial community composition and function. Soil microcosms were amended with a range of concentrations of TNT for 30 days. A polyphasic approach encompassing culture-independent molecular analysis by DGGE, community-level physiological profiling (CLPP) and cell enumeration revealed that the amendment of soils with TNT resulted in a shift from slower growing k-strategists towards faster growing r-strategists. Pseudomonads became prevalent at high concentrations of TNT. Pollution induced community tolerance (PICT) was observed as TNT concentrations increased. Chemical analyses revealed that TNT was reduced to its amino derivatives, products of reductive microbial transformation. The transformation to amino derivatives decreased at high concentrations of TNT, indicative of inhibition of microbial TNT transformation.  相似文献

Ground level ozone represents a significant air quality concern in Toronto, Canada, where the national 65 ppb 8-h standard is repeatedly exceeded during the summer. Here we present an analysis of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and volatile organic compound (VOC) data from federal and provincial governmental monitoring sites from 2000 to 2007. We show that summertime VOC reactivity and ambient concentrations of NO2 have decreased over this period of time by up to 40% across Toronto and the surrounding region. This has not resulted in significant summertime ozone reductions, and in some urban areas, it appears to be increasing. We discuss the competing effects of decreased ozone titration leading to an increase in O3, and decreased local ozone production, both caused by significant decreases in NOx concentrations. In addition, by using local meteorological data, we show that annual variability in summer ozone correlates strongly with maximum daily temperatures, and we explore the effect of atmospheric transport from the southwest which has a significant influence on early morning levels before local production begins. A mathematical model of instantaneous ozone production is presented which suggests that, given the observed decreases in NOx and VOC reactivity, we would not expect a significant change in local ozone production under photochemically relevant conditions. These results are discussed in the context of Toronto's recent commitment to cutting local smog-causing pollutants by 20% by 2012.  相似文献

The dependence of bats in Britain on houses as roosts may result in them being exposed to pesticides used in remedial timber treatments. Pentachlorophenol (PCP) and permethrin are used as a fungicide and an insecticide for timber treatment, respectively. The present study investigated toxicity and distribution in body tissues of these two pesticides in pipistrelle bats. Four groups of nine to ten bats were kept in separate outdoor flight enclosures and were provided with roost boxes treated with either PCP only, permethrin, PCP/permethrin mixture or solvent only (control). At the start of the experiment, mean (+/-SE) PCP and permethrin concentrations on the surface of wooden blocks that had been treated in the same way as roost boxes were 69.32+/-6.76 mg g(-1) (n=6) and 3.3+/-1.6 mg g(-1) (n=3), respectively. All bats exposed to PCP and PCP/permethrin treated boxes died within 24 and 120 h, respectively; nine out of the ten controls survived the 32 day experimental period (P<0.001; both groups compared with control). Bats exposed to permethrin treated boxes survived as well as controls. Mean (+/-SE) carcass PCP concentration (excluding deposits on fur) of bats exposed to PCP and PCP/permethrin treated boxes was 13.11+/-2.52 microg g(-1)BW (n=20). PCP burdens on fur were positively correlated with total weight of PCP in the carcass (P<0.001). PCP was present in fat depots, liver, kidney and the remainder of the body which, despite containing low PCP concentrations, was the main PCP reservoir (66.4+/-5.0% of carcass PCP load; n=20). Total PCP in the carcass was significantly correlated with lipid weight (P<0.005). Permethrin was not detectable in body washes and tissues of bats exposed to PCP/permethrin mixture or permethrin.  相似文献

We studied pregnancy-related changes in serum concentrations of five polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs, CB 118, CB 138, CB 153, CB 156, CB 180), three hydroxylated PCB metabolites (4-OH-CB107, 4-OH-CB146, 4-OH-CB187), and pentachlorophenol (PCP). Median serum lipid content increased 2-fold between early (weeks 9-13) and late pregnancy (weeks 35-36) (N = 10), whereas median PCB levels in serum lipids decreased 20-46%, suggesting a dilution of PCB concentrations in serum lipids. Nevertheless, strong positive intra-individual correlations (Spearman’s r = 0.61-0.99) were seen for PCBs during the whole study period. Thus, if samples have been collected within the same relative narrow time window during pregnancy, PCB results from one single sampling occasion can be used in assessment of relative differences in body burdens during the whole pregnancy period. Concentrations of OH-PCBs in blood serum tended to decline as pregnancy progressed, although among some women the concentrations increased at the end of pregnancy. Positive intra-individual correlations (r = 0.66-0.99) between OH-PCB concentrations were observed during the first and second trimester, whereas correlations with third trimester concentrations were more diverging (r = −0.70-0.85). No decline in PCP concentrations was observed during pregnancy and no significant correlations were found between concentrations at different sampling periods. Our results suggest that for both OH-PCBs and PCP, sampling has to be more specifically timed depending on the time period during pregnancy that is of interest. The differences in patterns of intra- and inter-individual variability of the studied compounds may be due to a combination of factors, including lipid solubility, persistence of the compounds, distribution in blood, metabolic formation, and pregnancy-related changes in body composition and physiological processes.  相似文献

In a Scots pine forest the throughfall deposition and the chemical composition of the soil solution was monitored since 1984. (Inter)national legislation measures led to a reduction of the deposition of nitrogen and sulphur. The deposition of sulphur has decreased by approximately 65%. The total mineral-nitrogen deposition has decreased by ca. 25%, which is mainly due to a reduction in ammonium-N deposition (−40%), since nitrate-N deposition has increased (+50%). The nitrogen concentration in the upper mineral soil solution at 10 cm depth has decreased, leading to an improved nutritional balance, which may result in improved tree vitality. In the drainage water at 90 cm depth the fluxes of NO3 and SO42− have decreased, resulting in a reduced leeching of accompanying base cations, thus preserving nutrients in the ecosystem. It may take still several years, however, before this will meet the prerequisite of a sustainable ecosystem.  相似文献

This paper reports on progress to date of an ongoing effort to develop, evaluate and apply a European Regional Model of Air Pollution (EURMAP). This model is capable of calculating longterm (monthly, seasonal and/or annual) averages of the contributions from SO2 in individual emittor countries to SO2 and SO42− concentrations, dry deposition and wet deposition in receptor countries. The model covers all of western and central Europe, a geographical area 2100 km × 2250 km in size. A trajectory-type approach is used, which involves the tracking of pollutant ‘puffs’ released from each emissions cell in an extensive 32 × 36 grid. Meteorological data in the form of wind and precipitation values from some 45 upper-air and 535 surface stations are input at 6-hourly intervals for use in the calculations of puff transport and wet deposition. A wet deposition coefficient is used that depends upon precipitation rate.The preliminary model has been used to calculate annualized as well as monthly mean maps for January, April, July and October 1973 of SO2 and SO42− concentration, dry deposition and wet deposition patterns resulting from SO2 emissions in 13 countries in western and central Europe. The dry and wet deposition patterns are presented, along with values of calculated international exchanges of SO2 and SO42− wet and dry deposition among these various countries. The EURMAP results are compared with those from Fisher's (1975) model and the LRTAP model (Ottar, 1978; OECD, 1977). In many (but not all) respects the results from the three models are similar. The possible reasons for the differences revealed by this comparison are examined.  相似文献

为探究不同基质对含有复合重金属污水的长期处理效果及重金属在人工湿地中的分布特征,通过温室内构建基质分别为砾石(CK)、沸石(F)、生物炭(S)和沸石-生物炭(FS)的4组垂直潜流人工湿地污水处理模拟装置,连续运行161 d,观测出水水质变化并研究湿地各系统中重金属的浓度分布特征。结果表明,所有装置出水均呈低溶解氧状态,pH呈中性或弱碱性;4组人工湿地均具有良好的脱氮除磷及重金属去除效果,有机物、TN、NO3--N、NH4+-N和TP的平均去除率分别为91.93%~95.85%、86.08%~89.80%、94.99%~97.60%、75.22%~83.58%和60.35%~64.61%,Cu、Zn、Pb、Cd和Cr 5种重金属的去除率均在90%以上;菖蒲体内重金属的质量浓度表现为地下部分>地上部分,但菖蒲体内富集的重金属总量相对较少,整个系统中重金属主要富集在基质中(77%~96%);与湿地CK相比,沸石与生物炭的联合添加显著提高了污水的净化能力(P<0.01),但运行后期,装置对复合污水的去除率呈一定的下降趋势。  相似文献

Since 1990, the MERA (MEsure des Retombées Atmosphériques, French acronym for background air pollution monitoring) network has been focused on the composition of the lower troposphere within the EMEP program. In particular, 46 non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) concentrations have been measured between 1997 and 2006 at three MERA sites.The analysis of temporal trends using Mann-Kendall and Sen methods showed a global decrease of anthropogenic NMHC. These results are in accordance with the trends observed on other sites in Europe and follow the decrease of VOCs emissions in France. Nevertheless the concentrations of long-life species like ethane seem to remain steady showing the growing influence of most distant source areas. In addition isoprene concentrations are typically higher in France than in other countries in Europe and slightly rising. Data analysis was performed using positive matrix factorization (PMF). Five similar PMF factors are identified as aged profiles for the three sites. The examination of factor contributions made it possible to determine a hierarchy in source influence. A higher contribution of evaporative sources was observed on the southern site while residential heating was the main factor for the other two. This work was completed by a clustering analysis (K-means) of air mass trajectories in order to apportion source contribution depending on air mass origins. Two main groups have been distinguished: (1) older and diluted air masses from an oceanic origin; and (2) anthropogenic and closer sources indicating continental influence.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper presents the results of long-term investigations of 137Cs activity concentrations in chicken meat and eggs from northwest Croatia for the period 1987–2018. The research has been done as a part of monitoring program of radioactive contamination in Croatia. The highest activity concentrations in both of these foodstuffs were measured in 1987 and have been decreasing exponentially ever since. The Fukushima-Daiichi accident in 2011 did not cause any increase of 137Cs activity concentrations. The ecological half-life for 137Cs was estimated to be 8.0 and 8.4?years for chicken meat and eggs respectively. The correlation between 137Cs in fallout and chicken meat as well as between 137Cs in fallout and eggs is very good, the respective correlation coefficients being 0.79 and 0.72, indicating that fallout was the main source of 137Cs contamination in both foodstuffs. The estimated effective doses received by adult members of the Croatian population due to the intake of radiocaesium by chicken meat and egg consumption for the overall observed period are very small, 2.0 and 0.6 µSv respectively. Therefore, chicken meat and chicken egg consumption was not a critical pathway for the transfer of radiocaesium to humans.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of handheld XRF analyzers on wood that has been treated with a preservative containing arsenic. Experiments were designed to evaluate precision, detection limit, effective depth of analysis, and accuracy of the XRF arsenic readings. Results showed that the precision of the XRF improved with increased sample concentration and longer analysis times. Reported detection limits decreased with longer analysis times to values of less than 1mg/kg or 18 mg/kg, depending on the model used. The effective depth of analysis was within the top 1.2 cm and 2.0 cm of sample for wood containing natural gradients of chemical preservative and concentration extremes, respectively. XRF results were found to be 1.5-2.3 times higher than measurements from traditional laboratory analysis. Equations can be developed to convert XRF values to results which are consistent with traditional laboratory testing.  相似文献

Detecting and quantifying abnormal changes in the concentration of urban air pollutants can be difficult due to the influence of meteorology and atmospheric chemistry. This study presents methods to detect and characterise small changes in the concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) that deviate from expected behaviour. Generalized additive models (GAMs) are used to describe daily mean NO2 concentrations at roadside monitoring sites to determine how concentrations deviate from measured concentrations. Structural change methods are applied to time series describing this difference to identify change-points, where concentrations of NO2 deviate significantly from expected behaviour. Methods are also used which quantify the timing and uncertainty associated in the timing of these change-points. For most time series data considered in London, concentrations of NO2 underwent relatively abrupt changes rather than smoothly varying increases; changes which remain largely undetected in raw time series data. Most change-points occurred in late 2002 or early 2003, and the factors, which may have contributed to them, are discussed. These methods can also identify technical problems with monitoring equipment and are applicable to other instances where detecting sudden atmospheric composition change is important.  相似文献

Changes in summertime organic aerosol (OA) concentrations in the Eastern U.S. are investigated for different temperature change scenarios using the chemical transport model PMCAMx-2008. OA is simulated using the volatility basis set approach, assuming that the primary emissions are semi-volatile and that the intermediate volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds are oxidized in the gas phase, resulting in products with lower volatility. For the basic temperature change scenario where biogenic emissions are kept constant, ground-level OA decreases by −0.3% K−1 on average. Increases in the north (+0.1% K−1) and decreases in the south (−0.5% K−1) are predicted. The effect of the uncertain temperature dependence of the aging rate constant is modest, changing the OA by only 0.1% K−1 over the temperature-independent case. For the more realistic scenario in which biogenic OA precursor emissions are allowed to increase with temperature (up to 10% K−1), however, average OA increases by 4.1% K−1, with even higher increases in southern regions. These results suggest that as temperature increases, complicated changes in production, partitioning and chemical aging will take place. Nevertheless, the change in biogenic emissions and subsequent production of biogenic OA is more than an order of magnitude more important than the changes in the rates of chemical and physical atmospheric processes.  相似文献

In West Africa different insecticides had been applied in selected river areas for the reduction of the blackfly populations vectors of Onchocerca volvulus, a parasite causing blindness. To evaluate the possible long term effects of the larvicides on the non target fauna an aquatic monitoring programme has been up from the initial phase of the project. Addressing the attention to the invertebrates data collected in four countries during a maximum period ranging from 1977 to 1996, this paper shows and discusses the data analysis strategy for the measure and interpretation of the biological variation. In particular the application of quantitative ecological analysis methods. Principal Component Analysis, rank abundance models and the community diversity indexes, is critically discussed and comments are given to the ecological interpretation of the results.  相似文献
