Macroalgal fields are a feature of the shallow tropical benthos, yet their importance for coral reef fish population dynamics remains poorly understood. The abundance of fish recruits was recorded using underwater visual census at six macroalgal and 11 coral reef sites in the Montebello and Barrow Islands. Surveys identified 6,935 individual recruit fish from 105 species, 54 genera and 20 families. Of these, 1,401 recruits from 48 species, 31 genera and 14 families were observed in macroalgal sites. Sixteen of the 105 recruit species (15.2 %) were observed exclusively at macroalgal sites. Forty-two (87.5 %) of these species have been observed as adults on adjacent coral reefs. Species composition of fish recruits differed significantly between the two habitats. Corallivore, small omnivore and zooplanktivore recruits had significantly higher numbers in the coral sites, while the results clearly demonstrate that juveniles, within the genera Lethrinus and Choerodon, as well as large algal croppers, are predominantly found at macroalgal (74–100 %) rather than coral-dominated sites. High-canopy macroalgae cover was positively correlated with abundance of these taxa, particularly Lethrinids (r 2 = 0.40). This study is the first to highlight the important attributes of tropical macroalgal fields and suggests that they have a similar role to seagrass meadows as essential juvenile habitat, thus warranting greater attention in conservation planning and ecological studies.  相似文献

Fish were collected by gill nets from the deeper waters of the Entrance Channel, basins and rivers of the large Peel-Harvey estuarine system (south-western Australia) in the wet (June to November) and dry (December to May) periods between August 1979 and July 1981. Simple-regression analysis showed that the number of species, abundance and biomass of fish in the rivers rose with increases in the salinity and temperature of both the surface and bottom of the water column. No such significant correlations were found in the Entrance Channel andbasins (Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary), where salinity changes were far less marked. The number of species at sites throughout the estuary was inversely correlated with distance from the estuary mouth. Multiple-regression equations showed that, compared with the other environmental variables tested, bottom salinity had a greater influence on the nunber of species and abundance both in the rivers and in the system as a whole. These results indicate that salinity has a greater effect on the fauna in the deeper waters than in the shallows (cf. Loneragan et al., 1986). The larger fish which characterise the deeper waters may thus be less tolerant to low salinities than the smaller fish typically found in the shallows. Both classification and ordination separated the faunal composition of the rivers from those of the Entrance Channel and basins. The fauna of the two narrow and deeper sites in the rivers separated into wet- and dry-period components. Differences between the faunal composition of the riverine regions and those of the Entrance Channel and basins have been related to the much more variable and lower minimum salinities in the rivers. Species characteristic of the rivers included Amniataba caudavittatus, which is estuarine sensu stricto in south-western Australia, the semianadromous Nematalosa vlaminghi and the highly euryhaline Mugil cephalus. The indicator species for the Entrance Channel and basins were all marine species (Cnidoglanis macrocephalus, Hyporhamphus melanochir, Gerres subfasciatus and Pomatomus saltator).  相似文献

Experiments were performed to measure the emission factors (EFs) of gaseous carbonaceous species, such as CO2, CO, CH4, and non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs), from the combustion of five types of coal of varying organic maturity and two types of biomass briquettes under residential burning conditions. Samples were collected in stainless steel canisters and 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) cartridges and were analyzed by GC-FID/MS and HPLC, respectively. The EFs from crop residue briquette burning were generally higher than those from coals, with the exception of CO2. The dominant NMVOC species identified in coal smoke were carbonyls (41.7%), followed by C2 unsaturated hydrocarbons (29.1%) and aromatics (12.1%), while C2 unsaturated hydrocarbons were the dominant species (68.9%) emitted from the combustion of crop residue briquettes, followed by aromatics (14.4%). A comparison of burning normal crop residues in stoves and the open field indicated that briquettes emitted a larger proportion of ethene and acetylene. Both combustion efficiency and coal organic maturity had a significant impact on NMVOC EFs from burning coal: NMVOC emissions increased with increasing coal organic maturity but decreased as the combustion efficiency improved. Emissions from the combustion of crop residue briquettes from stoves occurred mainly during the smoldering process, with low combustion efficiency. Therefore, an improved stove design to allow higher combustion efficiency would be beneficial for reducing emissions of carbonaceous air pollutants.  相似文献

The fish at sites located throughout the large, seasonally closed Wilson Inlet, on the southern coast of Western Australia, were sampled bimonthly between September 1987 and April 1989. Seine nets were used to sample nearshore shallow waters, while gill nets were employed in slightly more offshore and deeper waters. Twenty species were recorded in the shallows, of which the three species of atherinid and the three species of goby comprised >97% of the total catch. In terms of number of individuals, the 27 species recorded in gill nets in the deeper waters were dominated by Cnidoglanis macrocephalus and Platycephalus speculator, and to a lesser extent Engraulis australis, Aldrichetta forsteri, Sillaginodes punctata and Arripis georgianus. Fifty-five percent of the species recorded in the nearshore shallow waters and 18% of those in offshore deeper waters spawn within Wilson Inlet; these species contributed 98.5 and 63.0%, respectively, to the total catches in those waters. Classification and ordination showed that the composition of the fauna in the shallows was similar at all sites throughout the large basin and did not change conspicuously with season. However, the composition of catches taken in offshore waters differed between the lower part of the basin and the middle and upper regions of the basin, which in turn differed from those in the saline reaches of a tributary river. The four diagnostic species of the lower estuary were all marine species, while the three diagnostic species in the river included a marine species (Mugil cephalus) that often penetrates far upstream in other systems, and a species which was confined to the rivers (Acanthopagrus butcheri). The composition of the fish fauna in the offshore waters of the lower estuary between the middle of spring and middle of autumn was different in 1987/1988 (when the estuary mouth was open for only the first two months of that period) from that in 1988/1989 (when the mouth was open for the whole of that period). This difference is related to the greater number of marine species that were retained in the first of these years, when the estuary was open to the ocean for only a short period. The greater retention of marine species in 1987/1988 than in 1988/1989 probably reflects a far lower level of freshwater flusing and/or a less marked decline in salinity.  相似文献

Abstract: Freshwater biodiversity conservation is generally perceived to conflict with human use and extraction (e.g., fisheries). Overexploited fisheries upset the balance between local economic needs and endangered species’ conservation. We investigated resource competition between fisheries and Ganges river dolphins (Platanista gangetica gangetica) in a human‐dominated river system in India to assess the potential for their coexistence. We surveyed a 65‐km stretch of the lower Ganga River to assess habitat use by dolphins (encounter rates) and fishing activity (habitat preferences of fishers, intensity of net and boat use). Dolphin abundance in the main channel increased from 179 (SE 7) (mid dry season) to 270 (SE 8) (peak dry season), probably as a result of immigration from upstream tributaries. Dolphins preferred river channels with muddy, rocky substrates, and deep midchannel waters. These areas overlapped considerably with fishing areas. Sites with 2–6 boats/km (moderately fished) were more preferred by dolphins than sites with 8–55 boats/km (heavily fished). Estimated spatial (85%) and prey–resource overlap (75%) between fisheries and dolphins (chiefly predators of small fish) suggests a high level of competition between the two groups. A decrease in abundance of larger fish, indicated by the fact that small fish comprised 74% of the total caught, may have intensified the present competition. Dolphins seem resilient to changes in fish community structure and may persist in overfished rivers. Regulated fishing in dolphin hotspots and maintenance of adequate dry season flows can sustain dolphins in tributaries and reduce competition in the main river. Fish‐stock restoration and management, effective monitoring, curbing destructive fishing practices, secure tenure rights, and provision of alternative livelihoods for fishers may help reconcile conservation and local needs in overexploited river systems.  相似文献

Photographic and trap data obtained from the eastern North Atlantic Ocean in 1981 and 1978, respectively, have been combined to document the response of abyssal lysianassid amphipods to large food falls, and the predation on these amphipods by the fish Paraliparis bathybius. The use of a new camera/current meter system has demonstrated that overall numbers of amphipods and presence of fish were related to tidal currents. Species of Paralicella and Orchomene were the most abundant amphipods, and occurred in peak numbers during periods of low current velocity. Variation in abundance of Eurythenes gryllus, a larger species, which occurred in smaller numbers, was apparently not related to tidal currents. Paraliparis bathybius were present only during flood tides.  相似文献

Ten sampling points were selected in Kanhan River, situated near the ash dump sites of Koradi Thermal Power Plant, Nagpur. The leaching of trace elements from fly ash dumps was experimentally determined by acid digestion, batch leaching and toxicity characteristic leaching procedure tests. Elemental concentrations in river water, sediment, plankton and five commonly prevailing fish species (Catla catla, Labeo bata, Cyprinus carpio, Cirrhinus reba, Puntius ticto) were determined using a Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer during the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. Metal concentrations (Cr, Mn, Zn, Cu, Fe, Ni, Cu and Pb) in river water were higher during the pre-monsoon season compared to the post-monsoon season. Zn (30.65?mg/kg) was observed to be the most predominant metal in plankton during the pre-monsoon season while, during the post-monsoon season, Fe (21.19?mg/kg) showed the maximum concentration. Muscles of C. catla had metal concentrations (Cr, Mn, Zn, Fe, Cu and Pb) above the permissible limits of Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO 1983) during the pre-monsoon season. Bioaccumulation factor (BAF) was found highest for Cr (37.5) in muscles of C. catla during the pre-monsoon season, while BAF was observed to be maximum in L. bata for Cu (28.09), which may be detrimental for human consumption.  相似文献

Fish faunas were sampled seasonally using a large and a small beam trawl in three seagrass habitats comprising predominantly Amphibolis griffithii or Posidonia sinuosa or Posidonia coriacea, which differ in seagrass and meadow structure. Amphibolis griffithii and P. sinuosa both produce a relatively dense leaf canopy, but the former exhibits a distinct architecture, with the leaf canopy overlying relatively open spaces surrounding woody stems, compared to the uniformly dense blade-like leaves of P. sinuosa which emerge directly from the sediment. In comparison, P. coriacea provides a landscape of patchy seagrass amongst areas of bare sand. Since the latter seagrass habitat contains large areas of sand, fish were also sampled in adjacent unvegetated areas. The number of species and density of fish were greater (P<0.05) in P. sinuosa than in either A. griffithii or P. coriacea. The mean number of species caught using the large trawl ranged from 16 to 24 in the first of these habitats compared to 14–21 and 9–15 in the last two habitats, respectively, and the mean densities ranged between 78 and 291 fish 1000 m?2 in P. sinuosa compared to 31–59 fish 1000 m?2 in A. griffithii and 31–59 fish 1000 m?2 in P. coriacea. The biomass of fish was greater (P<0.05) in both P. sinuosa and A. griffithii than in P. coriacea (4.2–5.3 kg and 3.3–6.2 kg versus 0.7–1.9 kg 1000 m?2, respectively). Furthermore, the size-structure of fish differed among these habitats, where the median weight of fish was 72.1 g in A. griffithii, compared to 7.5 g and 19.8 g in P. sinuosa and P. coriacea, respectively. Ordination and ANOSIM demonstrated that the species-composition differed markedly among the three seagrass habitats (P<0.001), suggesting that fish species display a distinct preference for particular seagrasses characterised by different architecture. Differences in species-composition among the seagrass habitats partly reflected the size-composition of fish in each habitat. The open space below the canopy of A. griffthii is likely to allow larger fish to occupy this habitat, whereas only small fish would be able to penetrate the dense foliage of P. sinuosa. Differences in species- and size-composition of fish among these habitats may be the result of settlement-sized larvae discriminating between particular seagrass and meadow structures, or fish being subject to different levels of predation and/or accessibility to food or space. The species-composition in P. coriacea was highly dispersed and did not differ from that of unvegetated areas. While several species were associated with both P. coriacea and bare-sand habitats, some species did display a high affinity with the seagrass P. coriacea. This may reflect an association with the sparse and narrower leaves of this seagrass or with the patchy occurrence of the seagrass Heterozostera tasmanica, which commonly occurs as an understorey in this habitat.  相似文献

Abstract

The distribution and impacts of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/DFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the Taiwan Er-Jen River were investigated by monitoring fish distribution and measuring PCDD/DFs and PCBs levels in sediment and fish samples. Most of the fish collected are pollution-resistant species such as Oreochromis spp, Liza macrolepsis, Channa spp and Megalops cyprinoides. the most polluted river sections are in the upstream where large amount of waste effluents from households, livestock rearing and nearby dumping sites were discharged into the river, and the lower reaches of the river where metal recovery activities including open burning of waste electrical wire/scrap occurred. Sediment samples collected near the burning site show 2,3,7,8-TCDD toxicity equivalents (TEQ) ranging from 0.014 to 14.2 ng g?1 by PCDD/DFs and from 0.015 to 1.03 ng g?1 by coplanar PCBs (Co-PCBs). the fish samples show TEQ ranging from 0.029 to 0.615 ng g?1 by PCDD/DFs and from 0.012 to 0.12 ng g?1 by Co-PCBs. Possible PCDD/DFs sources are discharged PCBs, open burning of waste wire/scrap, and pentachlorophenol. the consumption of these fish will cause an average intake of 54 pg kg?1 d?1 TEQ. the prevention of direct discharge of livestock and the dumping of waste effuents into River Er-Jen as well as the control of metal recovery activities appears to be the first step toward the restoration of River Er-Jen.  相似文献

Daytime sampling of mangrove and seagrass (Halophila/Halodule community) habitats every 7 wk at Alligator Creek, Queensland, Australia, over a period of 13 mo (February 1985–February 1986) using two types of seine net, revealed distinct mangrove and seagrass fish and crustacean faunas. Total abundance of fish and relative abundance of small and large fish also varied between habitats and seasonally. Post-larval, juvenile and small adult fish captured with a small seine-net (3 mm mesh) were significantly more abundant (4 to 10 times) in the mangrove habitat throughout the 13 mo of sampling. Mangrove fish abundance showed significant seasonality, greatest catches being recorded in the warm, wet-season months of the year. Relative abundances of larger fish (captured in a seine net with 18 mm mesh) in the two habitats varied throughout the year, but did not show a seasonal pattern. At the same site, small crustaceans were significantly more abundant in the mangroves in all but one dryseason sample. Similar comparisons for three riverine sites, sampled less frequently, in the dry and wet seasons of 1985 and 1986, respectively, showed that in general mangrove habitats had significantly more fish per sample, although the relative abundance of fish in mangroves and other habitats changed with season. Crustacean catches showed a similar pattern, except that densities among sites changed with season. Fish and crustacean abundance in mangroves varied among sites, indicating that estuaries differ in their nursery-ground value. The juveniles of two commercially important penaeid prawn species (Penaeus merguiensis and Metapenaeus ensis) were amongst the top three species of crustaceans captured in the study, and both were significantly more abundant in the mangrove habitat. By contrast, mangroves could not be considered an important nursery for juveniles of commercially important fish species in northern Australia. However, based on comparisons of fish catches in other regions, the results of the present study indicate the importance of mangroves as nursery sites for commercially exploited fish stocks elsewhere in South-East Asia. The behaviour of animals towards their mirror image (“mirror test”) is routinely used as a proxy to measure aggression levels, especially in fish. The lack of evidence for visual self-recognition in fish supports this method. However, recent work points towards different hormonal and gene expression responses when fish are exposed either to conspecific opponents or to their mirror image, urging for validation of this widespread method. Here, we test the predictive value of mirror tests in three sympatric cichlid species from Lake Tanganyika: the cooperative breeder Neolamprologus pulcher, the polygamous shell brooder Telmatochromis vittatus and the monogamous, biparental piscivore Lepidiolamprologus elongatus. In particular, we compare differences in restrained and overt aggression levels for individuals of each species when confronted with a mirror or a live conspecific. The three species differed in response to the two contest situations. While in N. pulcher both aggressive responses were correlated between the mirror test and the live opponent fight, there was no such relationship in T. vittatus and L. elongatus. Thus, the mirror test appears to be a suitable surrogate for intraspecific aggression in N. pulcher, while aggression against a mirror image has limited predictive value for intraspecific aggression in the other two species. These results underline the importance of validating the mirror test’s predictive value in a study species before drawing conclusions from mirror tests about aggressiveness under natural, social conditions.  相似文献

The techniques used by 9 species of fish (representing 3 families) to capture Diadema sea urchins were observed under water in the Red Sea at Eilat, Israel. Different species displayed different techniques. Fish belonging to the Lethrinidae and Labridae families devoured the entire urchin after capture; Labridae alone were also capable of breaking up large sea urchins by banging them on rocks. The fish did this by shaking its head while holding the urchin in its mouth. Under experimental conditions, fish can distinguish between large and small urchins, and show a preference for the small urchin. The fish also shun contact with some other species of urchins. The trigger fish Balistes fuscus exposed to a dummy sea urchin responds to optical stimuli (body shape and spines); when exposed to a living sea urchin it responds to both optical and behavioural stimuli (movements of the spines). Morphological and ethological preadaptation of the fish to alter its preference for other food is essential before it can develop differentiated capture techniques. The ecological significance of the behaviour of fish in the coral reef ecosystem and the alternating influences in the predator-prey-relationship are discussed.  相似文献

An ecodynamic model that can simulate four phytoplankton species has been developed to deal with the unique characteristics of urban river systems which has manmade river profile, flow controlled by gates, severe eutrophication status, and fragile aquatic ecosystem. The ecodynamic model was developed referencing two typical models: the water quality simulation model WASP and ecological model CAEDYM. The model can simulate 11 state variables: dissolved oxygen, carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, organic nitrogen, inorganic phosphorus, organic phosphorus and four phytoplankton species with zooplankton as a boundary condition. The ecodynamic model was applied to Sihai section of the Beijing urban river system, where serious algal blooms broke out in recent years. The dominant phytoplankton species are Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, and Cryptophyta. Site-specific data on geometry, meteorology, pollution sources, and existing ecosystem parameters were collected and used for model calibration and verification The model results mimic observed trends of water quality and phytoplankton species succession and can be used for forecasting algal blooms as well as assessment of river management measures.  相似文献

Abstract: Captive rearing and translocation are often used concurrently for species conservation, yet the effects of these practices can interact and lead to unintended outcomes that may undermine species’ recovery efforts. Controls in translocation or artificial‐propagation programs are uncommon; thus, there have been few studies on the interacting effects of these actions and environmental conditions on survival. The Columbia River basin, which drains 668,000 km2 of the western United States and Canada, has an extensive network of hydroelectric and other dams, which impede and slow migration of anadromous Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) and can increase mortality rates. To mitigate for hydrosystem‐induced mortality during juvenile downriver migration, tens of millions of hatchery fish are released each year and a subset of wild‐ and hatchery‐origin juveniles are translocated downstream beyond the hydropower system. We considered how the results of these practices interact with marine environmental conditions to affect the marine survival of Chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha). We analyzed data from more than 1 million individually tagged fish from 1998 through 2006 to evaluate the probability of an individual fish returning as an adult relative to its rearing (hatchery vs. wild) and translocation histories (translocated vs. in‐river migrating fish that traveled downriver through the hydropower system) and a suite of environmental variables. Except during select periods of very low river flow, marine survival of wild translocated fish was approximately two‐thirds less than survival of wild in‐river migrating fish. For hatchery fish, however, survival was roughly two times higher for translocated fish than for in‐river migrants. Competition and predator aggregation negatively affected marine survival, and the magnitude of survival depended on rearing and translocation histories and biological and physical conditions encountered during their first few weeks of residence in the ocean. Our results highlight the importance of considering the interacting effects of translocation, artificial propagation, and environmental variables on the long‐term viability of species.  相似文献

The water quality of the River Rhine has improved and might again suit the critically endangered European sturgeon A. sturio L, which was extirpated from the river by 1950. This study describes the tracking of 43 juvenile hatchery-reared A. sturio, in the Dutch part of the Lower Rhine and Delta, originating from an ex situ measure of the River Gironde population. Observing in situ juvenile downstream migration could help to identify essential habitats and potential threats, before actual stocking. Fish were implanted with transponders of the NEDAP Trail® system and released in two batches, in May (n?=?13) and June 2012 (n?=?30). Detections collected (n?=?26) exhibited no upstream movement. Test-fish moved downstream with the flow. Because the historic estuary is disconnected from the North Sea by a sea lock “Haringvlietdam”, the migration of the fish followed the re-directed river discharge into the Port of Rotterdam (161 km). 96 % (n?=?19) of the detections was collected from the harbor in brackish water, where fish presumably acclimatized to higher salinities. 14 % (n?=?6) of the sturgeons were recaptured in coastal waters by beam trawlers, five within 1 month after release. It is concluded that sustainable coastal fisheries is a key-condition for rehabilitation of the European sturgeon. Adapted management of the sea lock will reconnect the estuary to the North Sea and create more favorable conditions for the species in the Lower Rhine and Delta.  相似文献

This study was conducted in river Panjkora (Khall, upstream; Timergara, downstream) and its tributary (Konhaye stream, reference site) at district Lower Dir. The study was aimed to assess heavy metal load in gills, liver, kidneys, and muscles of three fish species, namely Schizothorax esocinus, Racoma labiata, and Crossocheilus diplocheilus. The heavy metals, including nickel, cadmium, lead, copper, zinc, chromium, iron, and manganese were determined using an atomic absorption spect-rophotometer. Nickel and cadmium were not detected in any of the collected specimens at all sampling sites. Concentration of the detected metals varied significantly depending upon fish species and tissue type. Crossocheilus diplocheilus showed higher accumulated concentration of heavy metals while R. labiata contained the least. Schizothorax esocinus and R. labiata displayed significant differences in their concentrations of metals. The order of accumulation of heavy metals in different tissues was liver>kidneys>muscles>gills. Data demonstrated that heavy metal levels in the studied species were within permissible limits and thus, apparently suitable for human consumption. Currently, the river contains a sewage burden, and continued heavy pollution may ultimately lead to serious problems in the future.  相似文献

The marine deep-water fish Coryphaenoides rupestris has a lymph-like fluid in its large cranial lateral-line canals. A similar canal endolymph is also found in a few other fishes possessing closed lateral-line canals. We have analysed, chemically, the canal endolymph from 3 species of teleosts. In C. rupestris, the ionic composition resembles that of blood plasma, but the content of potassium is slightly lower. In Lota lota, the canal endolymph has a high potassium concentration, as does the inner-ear endolymph. In Glyptocephalus cynoglossus, the ionic composition of the canal endolymph resembles sea water. In all species, the concentrations of glucose and protein are much lower than in the blood plasma. Analyses were further made on endolymph and perilymph of the inner ear, on jelly-like material from the acusticolateralis system, and on body fluids from a small number of fish species, even elasmobranchs and a holocephalan. The water phase of the cupulae of the lateral-line system of C. rupestris had an ionic composition similar to that of the endolymph surrounding the cupulae. High potassium and low values for glucose and protein were found in the inner-ear endolymph of all species investigated. No carbonic anhydrase activity was found in the lateral-line system of C. rupestris, whereas a low activity of this enzyme was found in the inner ear of Gadus morrhua. The investigation shows that the composition of the fluids in contact with the mechano-receptors of the lateral-line system differs between different species of fishes. A few observations were made on the structural organization of the cranial lateral-line system in C. rupestris.  相似文献

Background During the last years, a decrease in fish populations has been documented for several river systems in Europe and North America. Since more than 20 years, similar developments have been documented for the upper Danube River between Sigmaringen and Ulm. The grayling (Thymallus thymallus) represents one of the most affected fish species in the upper Danube, and notable decrease has also been recorded for other species such as the European barbel (Barbus barbus). Despite intensive and continuous stocking and improvement of water quality along the Danube since the 1970s, this negative development of fish populations could not be stopped. Aim This article has been designed to give an overview on various investigations into the decline of fish in the upper Danube River. The major focus of this paper is on the presentation of a weight-of-evidence study carried out since 2003 at the Department of Zoology at the University of Heidelberg. Results and discussion During the 1920s, major parts of the upper Danube River were corrected, thus causing dramatic changes in the hydromorphology of the river. The macrozoobenthos, which represents an important source of nutrition for several fish species, depends on the morphological conditions of a river; recent investigations, however, could not show any dramatic changes in macrozoobenthos composition. Earlier investigations of the Danube River primarily focused on water quality, which has, indeed, been continuously improved by extensive modernization of wastewater treatment plants. Contamination by priority organic pollutants in sediments was not given any attention until the mid 1990s, when a clear decline of, e.?g., PAH concentrations were documented. However, results of more recent analyses showed very high PAH concentrations in two sediment samples (Schwarzach Σ 16 PAHs = 26 mg/kg; Öpfingen Σ 16 PAHs = 5 mg/kg). In 2002, the first ecotoxicological investigations were performed at the upper Danube River. The results of a pilot study showed a high ecotoxicological burden for selected sampling sites. As a conclusion of this study, a weight-of-evidence investigation was initiated to make an attempt to identify major pollutants and possible causes for the fish decline. In addition to, e.?g., liver ultrastructure analyses in barbel, the micronucleus test was used as a definite mutagenicity test using erythrocytes and liver samples. The results of the different in vitro tests showed very good correlation well with in situ parameters. Outlook The investigations within this weight-of-evidence study showed that the pollution situation of the Danube is, indeed, significant enough to potentially affect fish populations. However, further investigations are needed to clarify the specific causes for the fish decline. A bioassay-directed fractionation study is underway to identify specific pollutants as well as their sources. This study will also assess the endocrine disrupting potential of Danube sediments via histopathological analyses of gonads of field fish in combination with different in vitro tests. Furthermore, in the planned joint project COMPSEARCH, comparative investigations will evaluate the ecotoxicological hazard potential of different pollution sources and consequences of changes in land use.  相似文献
