Foraging strategies of the marine iguana,Amblyrhynchus cristatus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary Two foraging strategies were found in marine iguanas (Amblyrhynchus cristatus); (1) subtidal feeding: the animals swam out to sea and dived for algae in the subtidal zone; (2) intertidal feeding: the animals foraged around low tide in the intertidal zone on more or less exposed algae. Most marine iguanas were very consistent in their foraging strategy and so could be classified as subtidal feeders (SFs) or intertidal feeders (IFs). Feeding strategy was weight-related (Fig. 1), not sexspecific. Animals 1,200 g were IFs, animals >1,800 g SFs. Some iguanas in between followed a mixed foraging strategy. SFs foraged independently of the tides, IFs always around low tide (Figs. 2, 3). Feeding time patterns of IFs and SFs are described (Table 1). Sea motion seemed to have little effect on the foraging pattern of SFs, but strongly influenced that of IFs (Fig. 2). The smaller a marine iguana, the faster it cooled when immersed in water (Fig. 4). The difference between water temperature and core temperature of animals returning from foraging was significantly greater in IFs than SFs (Fig. 5). SFs swimming in very cold water regulated their body temperature to prevent excessive cooling. Possible costs and benefits of the two foraging strategies are discussed. Only part of a marine iguana population lives really amphibiously and only ca. 5% of a 24 h day is spent close to or in the water. All social activities, including mating, take place on land. These life history characteristics preclude those adaptations to an amphibious way of life that would at the same time reduce the iguanas' ability to be maximally active at their typical terrestrial body temperature of 35° C.  相似文献

Summary The reproductive behaviour of marine iguanas (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) was studied to answer the following questions: Which physical factors determine the number of females found on a male's territory? Do males select territories according to preferences for physical conditions or according to the number of females there? What causes the strong correlation between the number of females on a territory and the number of copulations achieved there? Females preferred as their resting places territories with the following characteristics, in order of importance: High number of shady/shelter places, low temperature of rocks at noon, proximity to the sea, sun-basking places in the afternoon. Other factors measured (probability of being wetted by spray, sun-basking places in the morning and at noon) showed no significant correlation with the number of females. Males, however, preferred territories further from the sea (within about 7 m), with high rock temperatures and a high number of basking places in the morning (in order of importance). Males primarily followed their site preferences and not female density in their choice of a territory. The site choice of females determined the number of copulations achieved on a territory, as females copulated preferentially on their resting places. A shift of females from one territory to another within one colony between two succeeding years was correlated with the change in relative weight of territory owners. This result was interpreted as an indication of female choice. Site preferences of males and females are discussed in relation to the animals' physiological requirements. Possible influences of ecological factors on the evolution of this mating system are considered.  相似文献

当前,我国现行的生态补偿制度中还存在部门管理不当、政策不连续、缺乏群众参与、补偿金过低、资金使用未完全体现生态补偿等诸多问题,需要依据生态补偿的外部性理论,从市场调节、财政转移支付、保证金制度、协商机制等途径人手,因地制宜地选择适当的途径并综合利用其它途径的便利之处,推动生态补偿制度建设的顺利进行.此外,急需政府从政策层面上给予大力支持和观念上的引导.包括:①建立"环境财政"制度;设立环境转移支付专项资金列入财政预算,加大生态补偿和生态环保的支持力度;②完善相关的税收政策,确立普遍征收为主的征收机制,扩大征收范围,调整税率;③改变由政府单一买单的财政转移支付制度模式,建立起地方、民间、企业和个人等多种渠道的融资体制;④倡导建立绿色GDP的核算体系和绿色审计制度;⑤逐步建立健全<生态补偿法>,建立生态环境评估体系,完善环境执法监督管理体系;⑥尽快完成从"生态补偿"到"生态赔偿"的观念转变.  相似文献

Summary Male ruffs (Philomachus pugnax), a lekking shorebird, can generally be divided into two morphs according to behavior and plumage coloration. Predominantly dark-colored, independent male ruffs defend small territories on a lek, whereas lighter colored satellite males are non-territorial and less site-faithful to a particular lek. The traits associated with the mating success of independent male ruffs were studied at two leks during two seasons on the island of Öland, Sweden in May and June of 1985 and 1987. Using multivariate analyses, three characteristics were found to be significantly related to mating success: high frequency of visits by satellites to an independent male's residence, consistency of lek attendance, and low rates of aggressive behavior. In contrast, mating success was unrelated to the degree of darkness of the independent male nuptial plumage, territory location on the lek, or rate of courtship displays. The use of multivariate analyses helped to resolve conflicting conclusions from previous studies which employed simple statistical analyses, or none at all. Experimental manipulations are suggested which will help to further determine the influence of female mate choice in this lekking system.  相似文献

The rate of light-saturated photosynthesis in 3 marine algae [Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin, Nitzschia closterium (Ehrenberg) Smith and Dunaliella tertiolecta Butcher] varies during growth in batch culture. The photosynthetic rare declines most rapidly during growth at the higher temperatures. Because of these changes in photosynthesis rate, the previously reported enhanced photosynthetic abilities caused by growth at lower temperatures (generally interpreted as evidence for higher enzyme levels) can only be observed when measurements are made late in the exponential phase or after the onset of the stationary phase of growth. When allowance is made for the earlier peak of photosynthetic ability in cultures growing at higher temperatures, there is no evidence for adaptation to lower temperatures being caused by increased levels of the enzymes required for carbon-dioxide fixation. When the changes due to growth in batch culture are taken into account, certain effects of temperature can be recognized. the dry weight: chlorophyll ratio of all 3 algae increases with decreasing growth temperatures. For P. tricornutum and N. closterium, growth at lower temperatures reduces the cellular content of chlorophyll a, but has little effect on the chlorophyll content of D. tertiolecta. The dry weight: cell-number ratio of D. tertiolecta and P. tricornutum increases with lower growth temperatures, but growth temperature has little effect on the cell mass of N. closterium. Growth of the 3 algae at lower temperatures does not increase their ability to photosynthesize at these lower temperatures. Rather, it reduces their ability to assimilate carbon dioxide at the higher temperatures.  相似文献

Copper-tolerant strains of the marine fouling alga Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillw) Lyngb. have been recorded. The mechanisms of tolerance which may operate in a copper-tolerant strain were investigated by comparing the growth characteristics, copper content and extracellular organic production of tolerant and non-tolerant strains. Growth was measured by a wet-weight method. The copper content of dryashed cells was measured spectrophotometrically using tetraethylthiuram disulphide. The extracellular material is ultra-violet absorbing, and the production was measured by recording absorption at 265 nm. Evidence suggests that an exclusion mechanism is operating in the tolerant strain under investigation. The extracellular material, the cell wall or an associated organism make little or no contribution no this exclusion. Membrane and intracellular changes are believed to account for the tolerance in this strain of E. siliculosus.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out with the marine sponge Suberites domuncula to determine whether sponges may express-like mammalian tumor cells-a multidrug-like transporter system. The results demonstrate that sponge cells possess such a protective system termed multixenobiotic resistance (MXR) pump or P-glycoprotein-like pump. The protein was identified by antisera for the mammalian P170 multidrug resistance protein as a 130 kDa molecule. Binding studies were performed with 3H-vincristine (3H-VCR) and membrane vesicles; this process is ATP-dependent and inhibited by verapamil, which is known to reverse the multidrug-resistance phenotype in mammalian systems. Accumulation experiments were performed to demonstrate that the uptake of 3H-VCR is time-dependent, and increases at elevated extracellular levels of 3H-VCR. Application of the dyeing technique with calcein-AM, a suitable functional assay for multidrug transporter systems in mammal cells, also revealed the existence of the MXR pump in S. domuncula plasma membranes. These data demonstrate that S. domuncula is provided with a multidrug-like transporter, the MXR pump, which might function as a protection system for sponges in polluted environments.  相似文献

A typical subarctic copepod,Neocalanus cristatus, occurred in the mesopelagic layer (500 to 1000 m) in Sagami Bay, central Japan, throughout the year. Specimens were collected from 1982 to 1986. A small number of adult females were distributed from 800 to 900 m only, but no adult males were collected. This species appeared to be abundant in April and August, when intermediate Oyashio water flowed strongly into Sagami Bay. Mean prosome lengths of copepodite stages IV and V and adults were 4.33, 6.87 and 6.87 mm, respectively. The condition factor [wet wt/(prosome length)3 × 100] of copepodite stage V did not vary remarkably, and mean values ranged from 4.7 to 5.0. Prosome length, body weight and condition factor ofN. cristatus collected from Sagami Bay were smaller than those of copepods in the northern North Pacific.N. cristatus transported from the north cannot molt to adult stages (except for those originating in mesopelagic waters) due to the adverse environmental conditions in Sagami Bay; instead, they die in the mesopelagic layer and sink to the bathypelagic layer (1 000 to 1 400 m), close to the bottom. Since nauplii and early copepodite stages did not occur in any season,N. cristatus probably do not reproduce in Sagami Bay.  相似文献

Vertical distribution and population structure of Neocalanus cristatus were investigated at Site H in the Oyashio region from September 1996 through October 1997 to evaluate their life cycle mode. Additional temporary samplings were also made at several stations covering the entire subarctic Pacific, Okhotsk Sea and Japan Sea, as a basis for regional comparison of life cycles of this species. At Site H, N. cristatus spawned throughout the year below 500 m depth, with a peak from October to December. The resulting eggs and nauplii floated/migrated upward, and formed an abundance peak of Copepodite Stage 1 (C1) in the surface layer in February. In the surface layer, the C1 developed and reached C5 by early June through a phytoplankton bloom which occurred in mid-March to end of June. The C5 migrated to deeper layers in July and August, where they molted to adults. Apparently, the developmental time from C5 to adults was highly variable (>1 month), and some might overwinter. The life cycle of N. cristatus appeared to be annual for the major portion of the population. Taking into account sampling season, temporal changes in vertical distribution and population structure data collected from regions other than Site H, there was a close correlation in the timing of the life cycle over the entire subarctic Pacific, but the reproduction season (April to June) was observed to be different in the Okhotsk and Japan Sea populations. Regional comparison of prosome length of C5 individuals, including those in the Bering Sea, indicated significantly larger sizes of specimens from the Japan Sea and Okhotsk Sea, as compared with those from the entire subarctic Pacific. Many orb-weaving spiders decorate their webs with conspicuous ultraviolet (UV)-reflective stabilimenta. The prey-attraction hypothesis suggests that stabilimenta are visually attractive to prey and thus may increase the spiders’ foraging success. However, previous studies on the function of stabilimenta have produced conflicting results in Argiope species. Using a combination of field and laboratory studies, we examined whether the linear stabilimentum of Argiope bruennichi contributes to prey interception. We recorded prey interceptions in 53 webs with stabilimenta and 37 equally-sized webs without stabilimenta, classifying captured prey according to their taxonomical group and size. On average, 6.2?±?4.7 prey items were intercepted in webs with stabilimenta, while 3.2?±?2.9 items were intercepted in webs without stabilimenta. The effects of stabilimenta on foraging success appear to be due to increased interception of UV-sensitive insect pollinators, including 20 families of Diptera, Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, and Lepidoptera. The mean number of UV-sensitive prey was 4.4?±?3.6 in webs with stabilimenta compared with 1.8?±?2.1 in webs without stabilimenta. Webs with and without stabilimenta did not differ in the mean number of UV-nonsensitive prey captured. The linear stabilimentum showed strong positive effects on the interception of large prey: webs with stabilimenta captured more than twice as many large prey (≥5?mm) than webs without stabilimenta, whereas there was only a slight difference in the interception rates for small prey (<5?mm). Comparisons among different Argiope species suggest that the stabilimentum may have different adaptive functions in different species or ecological contexts.  相似文献

Ant-300, a psychrophilic marine vibrio isolated from the Antarctic convergence, was tested for survival under conditions simulating those expected in situ for this organism. In particular, the organism's response to increased hydrostatic pressure was examined. Under a hydrostatic pressure of 250 atm, the viability of Ant-300 was reduced over 755 in growth media and under starvation conditions after 3 and 2 days, respectively. However, if the cells were starved for 1 week prior to pressurization of the starving suspension, 100% viability was maintained for over 6 weeks at the same pressure. After 10 weeks, the viability of a population of cells suspended for 1 week in natural or artificial seawater at a density of 103 cells ml–1 prior to pressurization of the suspension was 2 to 3 times greater than 1 atm controls. The data indicate that starvation conditions are a contributory if not the primary factor for the barotolerance of this organism in Antarctic waters. Nitrogen fixation (acetylene reduction) by the marine non-heterocystous cyanobacteria, Trichodesmium thiebautii and T. erythraeum, is sensitive to oxygen. Its sensitivity to oxygen was intensified when the colonies of T. thiebautii were disintegrated, but the separate trichomes yielded still retained the capacity for light dependent acetylene reduction. Trichodesmium colonies evolved hydrogen under argon in the light. The addition of carbon monoxide with DCMU [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea] enhanced the rate of hydrogen evolution to approximately the same level as that of the maximum acetylene reduction on an electron basis. This probably results from the inhibition of the uptake hydrogenase. We propose that the uptake hydrogenase functions to protect nitrogenase from damage by oxygen.  相似文献

Porichthys notatus is a common benthic fish found along the Pacific coast of North America. It possesses more than 700 small dermal photophores on its head and trunk. When P. notatus collected in Monterey Bay, California, is injected subcutaneously with norepinephrine, the photophores emit a long-lasting luminescence that is readily visible to the dark-adapted eye. The light emission is due to the oxidation of luciferin (substrate) by molecular oxygen, catalyzed by luciferase. In contrast, P. notatus collected in Puget Sound, Washington, is nonluminous, even though the photophores do not differ ultrastructurally from those of the California fish. The inability of the Puget Sound fish to luminesce is due to lack of luciferin in its photophores. Luminescence capability, however, may be induced in the Puget Sound fish by the oral or intraperitoneal administration of a small amount of luciferin from the tiny luminescent marine ostracod crustacean, Vargula hilgendorfii, suggesting that the origin of luciferin in P. notatus may be from the diet. In this study, specimens of P. notatus were collected over the entire known range of the species, between November 1981 and September 1987, and the presence of luciferin in the photophores determined. The results indicate that there are two populations of P. notatus: a luciferin-deficient, nonluminescent population located north of northern California and a luciferin-containing, luminescent population extending south of Cape Mendocino, California, to Baja California, Mexico. At the northern end of the southern population, a mixture of luminescent and nonluminescent P. notatus was found.  相似文献

Some species of phytoplankton adapt to low light intensities by increasing the size of the photosynthetic unit (PSU), which is the ratio of light-harvesting pigments to P700 (reaction-center chlorophyll of Photosystem I). PSU size was determined for 7 species of marine phytoplankton grown at 2 light intensities: high (300 E m-2 s-1) and low (4 E m-2 s-1); PSU size was also determined for 3 species grown at only high light intensity. PSU size varied among species grown at high light from 380 for Dunaliella euchlora to 915 for Chaetoceros danicus. For most species grown at low light intensity, PSU size increased, while the percentage increase varied among species from 13 to 130%. No change in PSU size was observed for D. euchlora. Photosynthetic efficiency per chlorophyll a (determined from the initial slope of a curve relating photosynthetic rate to light intensity) varied inversely with PSU size. In contrast, photosynthetic efficiency per P700 was enhanced at larger PSU sizes. Therefore, phytoplankton species with intrinsically large PSU sizes probably respond more readily to the rapid fluctuations in light intensity that such organisms experience in the mixed layer.Contribution No. 1180 from the Department of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, USA  相似文献

Summary Approximately 50% of marked peahens (Pavo cristatus) mate more than once with lek males. Some females mate with more than one male, others copulate repeatedly with the same male. The frequency of courtship also shows marked variation. Some females repeatedly engage males in courtship interactions after they have succesfully copulated with them. The likelihood of mating with more than one male increases if a female first mates with a non-preferred (unsuccessful male). There is a non-significant tendency for females to copulate with a more successful male when remating. Peahens may mate with a non-preferred male first if they do not encounter a successful male during their initial period of choice, perhaps because the most successful male on a lek was courting another female and/or was defended by another female. There are more aggressive interactions between females in front of preferred males. Preferred males receive more repetitive courtship behaviour and repeated matings. Dominant females are more likely to engage in repetitive courtship and matings. The number of times a female initiates courtship on any one day increases with the number of other females actively courting males at a lek site on that day. We suggest that there is competition amongst females for access to preferred males and that dominant females try to monopolise these males by repeatedly engaging them in courtship interactions. We discuss the implications of these observations for the idea that female may gain directly from mate choice in a species where males contribute nothing but gametes to their offspring. Morphologically plastic, cryptic, or geographically widespread species pose similar challenges to the evolutionary biologist: their taxonomic status is often unclear yet must be known to study almost any aspect of their biology, ecology, evolution, or biogeography. The marine bryozoan Membranipora membranacea (L.) is morphologically plastic and geographically widespread in temperate oceans of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, and its taxonomy is unclear. This study examined genetic relationships among allopatric populations and sympatric morphs of this species, or species complex. Colonies were collected from 1992 to 1995. Allozymes were used to elucidate the relationships among four widely separated populations, two in the North Atlantic and two in the North Pacific Ocean. Allozymes and mtDNA sequencing were used to clarify the genetic relationships among three sympatric morphs that might correspond to the species M. villosa Hincks and M. membranacea in the northeastern Pacific (Washington State). Populations in the North Atlantic and North Pacific had no fixed allelic differences at the loci tested but were separated by an average Nei's genetic distance of 0.581, suggesting their near-sibling species status. Populations from Friday Harbor (Washington) and Catalina Island (California) were not significantly differentiated, which was attributed to high gene flow. Populations on either side of the North Atlantic were genetically indistinguishable, which is most likely due to the recent establishment of the West Atlantic populations from European founders. At Friday Harbor, sympatric morphs varying in their spination and spine inducibility were genetically indistinguishable, supporting the hypothesis that M. villosa is an induced phenotype of M. membranacea and not a distinct species in the northeastern Pacific. In order to investigate the role of the ionic relations in buoyancy of marine phytoplankton, voltage recordings have been made on the planktonic diatom Coscinodiscus radiatus using conventional glass microelectrode techniques. The most negative Nernst equilibrium voltage in C. radiatus is E K, the potassium equilibrium voltage of around-85 mV. Accordingly, stable voltages of-40 to-80 mV were recorded from C. radiatus which conforms to the general theory of electro-diffusion of ions through membranes (voltage range V d). In addition, membrane voltages much more negative, e.g. up to-140 mV (voltage range V p), have been recorded in C. radiatus; these voltages demonstrate the operation of an electrogenic pump. Within the voltage range V d, light-on and-off (microscope illumination) caused weak hyper- and depolarizations by about 2 mV with a time constant of about 10 s. Also within V d, spontaneous oscillations could be observed with a frequency of about 0.03 Hz and irregular amplitudes up to 30 mV. These phenomena are simulated by a model for electrocoupling of the major ion transporters in plants, as worked out for guard cells with their subtle osmoregulatory system. Equivalent mechanisms are suggested to operate in planktonic diatoms for adjustment of buoyancy by appropriate uptake and release of ions.  相似文献

Montane and subalpine grasslands are prominent, but poorly understood, features of the Rocky Mountains. These communities frequently occur below reversed tree lines on valley floors, where nightly cold air accumulation is spatially coupled with fine soil texture. We used field experiments to assess the roles of minimum temperature, soil texture, grass competition, and ungulate browsing on the growth, photosynthetic performance, and survival of transplanted ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) seedlings at 32 sites straddling such reversed tree lines in the Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP) of the Jemez Mountains, New Mexico (USA). Seedling growth increased most strongly with increasing nighttime minimum temperatures away from the valley bottoms; seedlings experiencing the coldest temperatures on the caldera floor exhibited stunted needles and often no measurable height growth. Based on the chlorophyll fluorescence ratios PhiPSII and Fv/Fm, we found that low minimum temperatures, low soil moisture, and fine soil texture all contributed to photoinhibition. Neighboring herbs had only minor negative effects on seedlings. We found no effect of ungulates, but golden-mantled ground squirrels (Spermophilus lateralis) caused substantial seedling mortality. Second-year seedling survival was highest on sandy soils, and third-year survival was highest at sites with higher minimum temperatures. We conclude that differential tree seedling establishment driven by low minimum temperatures in the valley bottoms is the primary factor maintaining montane grasslands of the VCNP, although this process probably operated historically in combination with frequent surface fire to set the position of the tree line ecotone. As at alpine tree lines, reversed tree lines bordering montane and subalpine grasslands can represent temperature-sensitive boundaries of the tree life form.  相似文献
