Summary Eggs of pine snakes (Pituophis melanoleucus) were incubated at constant temperatures of 21°, 23°, 26°, 28°, 30° and 32° C to determine behavioural differences as a function of incubation temperature. For all behavioural and physiological measures hatchlings from medium incubation temperatures (26°, 28°) performed tests better than those hatchlings from eggs incubated at low temperatures (21°, 23°). For some behavioural tests hatchlings from eggs incubated at high temperature (30°, 32°) performed less well than medium temperature hatchlings. These differences were not due to ambient temperatures or age of testing since these were held constant. Some of the behavioural differences persisted for 24 weeks.  相似文献

The movement of organic carbon was assessed by statistical and simulation modeling analyses in two marsh types in New Jersey;each marsh contained three water-drainage systems in which three tidal cycles were sampled in May and June 1973. Hourly water samples were obtained and filtered through a gelman Type A glass filter for separation into dissolved (DOC) and particulate (POC) organic carbon components of the total organic carbon (TOC). Simulation data showed that individual creeks and marshes functioned differently on the sampled tidal cycles in regard to net movement of water and organic carbon components. Organic carbon components exhibited similar tidal variations, with significantly lower concentrations at flood slack than at ebb slack. Mid-ebb concentrations were significantly higher than mid-flood concentrations for TOC and POC. Individual marshes showed significantly different concentrations in the latter segments of the tidal cycle for TOC's and POC's. Results indicate that individual creeks, marshes and tidal cycles are not representative of the total movement of organic carbon in estuaries.Paper of the Journal Series, New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, Cook College, rutgers—The state University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, New Jersey 08903, USA.  相似文献

Summary Female red-necked wallabies settle within their mothers' home ranges, apparently for life, while males disperse at about two years of age. However, sons spend much more time with their mothers before dispersing than do daughters of similar ages. Females who associate regularly with their subadult offspring are less likely to reproduce successfully at their next breeding attempt than are females who spend little time with their subadults, and sons therefore impose greater short-term reproductive costs on their mothers than do daughters. Females who are generally gregarious also suffer reduced reproductive success, even though reproductive success is independent of local density. It is suggested that the reproductive costs to females of associating with their subadult offspring, and other relatives, are incurred through tolerance of ecological competition from those kin, and therefore reflect a form of prolonged maternal investment, which is initially heaviest in sons but is sustained for longer periods in daughters. Females produce equal numbers of male and female offspring, and spend equal amounts of time suckling them in infancy.  相似文献

Ecklonia radiata (C. Ag.) J. Ag. growing in Goat Island Bay, New Zealand produced up to 6 kg dry weight of tissue m-2 yr-1 in dense populations at 7-m depth. Half this tissue and an unknown amount of exudates were sloughed or torn off. Tissue production at 15 m was 0.3 to 0.5 kg m-2 yr-1. At this depth the plants grew only half as fast as in shallow water and the population density was decreased. Approximately 20% by weight of tissue produced at 7 m and 10% of that at 15 m was reproductive tissue. At both depths the elongation rate and percentage of water in stipes varied with stipe size. Initial sorus formation was related to plant size and not to age. Seasonal fluctuations in growth rate, haptera formation, frond size and sporulation were delayed in plants in deeper water.  相似文献

Female Polistes paper wasps are capable of independent nesting, yet many populations demonstrate a mixture of solitary and cooperative nest foundation. Previous studies of Polistes have found survival and/or productivity advantages of cooperative nest foundation compared to solitary nesting, and reproductive skew models have been designed to predict the dynamics of such flexible cooperation. In this paper, we examine the success of different nesting strategies in a previously unstudied population of Polistes aurifer in southern California. The colony cycle of this population is less synchronous than that of other temperate species, and the frequency of solitary nesting averages 86.2%. Our data suggest that this low rate of cooperative nest founding is adaptive, as demonstrated by the lack of survival or productivity advantages for cooperative foundress associations. Due to foundress turnover and nest foundation later in the season, many nests produce only one set of offspring. This results in a loss of the eusocial nature of some nests in the population. Data from a small sample of multifoundress nests show significant positive reproductive skew, despite concession model predictions that skew should be low in populations with low ecological constraints on independent nesting. This lack of support for the concessions skew model reflects a diminished incentive for cooperation.Communicated by L. Keller  相似文献

Summary During a two year study of the moorhen, Gallinula chloropus, a quarter of the nests found had two or more females laying in them. This was the result of two features of the moorhens' breeding biology: (1) Cooperative nesting; two (or more) females were paired to the same male. Both laid in the same nest, the second laid a large clutch synchronously to the first, and both cooperated in parental care. (2) Intraspecific brood parasitism; some females (parasites or dumpers) laid a small number of eggs at random in the nests' of neighbours. Cooperatively nesting females were mother and daughter, while parasite and host were not. Parasitic females laid in their own nest as well, and generally did so after completing a dumping sequence. Parasitic eggs were laid at random during the host's laying and incubation period, and were about a quarter as likely to produce an independent chick as were non-parasitic eggs. Parasitic females would probably have reared more chicks by laying in their own nests straight away, instead of dumping any eggs at all, because there was a strong decline in reproductive success with season. Possible reasons why they did not do so are discussed. Parasitised pairs tended to rear fewer own chicks than non-parasitised pairs. There was no evidence that hosts selectively destroyed parasitic eggs. Four hypotheses that explain why hosts accepted dumped eggs are considered. (1) The host pair were unaware of the dump, (2) the host male had copulated with the dumping female, (3) the dumper was related to one of the host pair, and (4) there was a benefit to the host pair because they gained extra helpers. These hypotheses were not supported by the data, but further tests are needed. As the cost of desertion was greater than the cost of acceptance of parasitic eggs, hosts may have been forced to accept.  相似文献

Adult horseshoe crabs Limulus polyphemus (L.) feed on a wide variety of infaunal and epifaunal invertebrates during their spring spawning migration in Delaware Bay, New Jersey, USA. Comparison of the gut contents with estimates of available prey showed that the most abundant potential prey item, the bivalve Gemma gemma, was avoided. The thinner shelled but comparatively scarce clam Mulinia lateralis was a preferred prey item. In the laboratory, crabs fed on G. gemma when it was the only available item but not when M. lateralis or soft-shell clams, Mya arenaria, were offered in conjunction. Large M. lateralis (>10mm) were preferred to small M. lateralis; there was no discrimination between M. lateralis and M. arenaria of the same size. Male and female horseshoe crabs had similar gut contents and laboratory feeding preferences, despite the fact that females are larger than males. Crabs spawning later in the summer contained more food than did crabs collected at the peak of spawning activity.  相似文献

The rationale and methods of construction of foredunes in The Netherlands and New Jersey, USA are identified and used to explain their genesis, locations, mobility, internal and external characteristics and temporal scales of evolution. Dunes are then ranked according to the degree they are modified by human processes. The lower level of protection required of foredunes in New Jersey and the greater amount of modification by municipal managers and shorefront residents results in smaller dunes and greater variety of sizes, shapes, methods of construction and alterations. As a result, humans are considered intrinsic agents in evolution of dune landforms and landscapes. Higher, wider, better vegetated foredunes occur in The Netherlands due to greater frequency of onshore winds and greater emphasis on sea defence at the national level. Natural processes play a greater role in the evolution of landforms. Human actions are considered extrinsic at this scale but intrinsic at the scale of landscapes. The change in foredunes from natural features to artifacts reveals the significance of humans in the modification of coastal landforms and reflects the changing perception of the role of these landforms in the coastal landscape.  相似文献

Winter mortality has been hypothesized to select for large body size in young-of-the-year (YOY) fishes, yet substantiation of winter mortality and its cause(s) are available for few estuarine or marine species. We examined seasonal length distributions of wild populations of four common marine species, black sea bass (Centropristis striata), tautog (Tautoga onitis), cunner (Tautogolabrus adspersus), and smallmouth flounder (Etropus microstomus), and mortality (i.e., frequency of death), growth, and behavior of their YOY in the laboratory at ambient winter temperatures (mean 7°C, range 2-13°C) during a 135-day period (December 1992 through mid-April 1993) to establish potential causes of their mortality in the field. Young-of-the-year black sea bass experienced 100% mortality when water temperatures decreased to 2-3°C in February, emphasizing the importance of winter emigration from estuaries in this southern species. The low mortality of two labrid species, YOY tautog (14%) and YOY cunner (3%), was consistent with their northern distribution and year-round occurrence in estuarine and nearshore coastal waters. Laboratory mortality of YOY smallmouth flounder (33%) was higher for small (<35 mm total length) fish, suggesting that this small species may experience high winter mortality in estuaries and nearshore coastal waters. Seasonal differences in fish length result potentially from several mechanisms (e.g., mortality and/or migration) that are difficult to assess, but our laboratory experiments suggest that seasonal temperature changes cause size-specific mortality of YOY smallmouth flounder and offshore migration of YOY black sea bass.  相似文献

Shifts in the spatio-temporal growth dynamics of shortleaf pine   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Previous studies focusing on the growth history of Pinus echinata at the edge of its geographical range have suggested that changes in growth correspond to climatic and non-climatic (e.g., anthropogenic) factors. We employ a regime-dependent state-space model that allows us to detect and characterize the changes in tree growth dynamics over space and time using readily available dendrochronological and climatic data in the presence of various sources of uncertainty. We utilize methods common in atmospheric sciences but relatively unknown in ecology and forestry to develop a hierarchical model for tree growth and describe the growth dynamics. The utility of such methods for addressing ecological problems will grow as more high dimensional spatio-temporal processes are considered and datasets become more readily available.  相似文献

Rarity of Organisms in the Sand Pine Scrub Habitat of Florida   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Naturalists conceive of "rare" organisms as those narrow in geographic range, restricted to few habitats, or small in population sizes. Because rare organisms may be rare in a variety of ways, a particular conservation strategy that purports to protect them may not do so effectively in all cases; therefore, categorization of rarity in advance could help ensure that the chosen strategy has a reasonable chance of success in a particular case. We placed plants, amphibians, and reptiles resident in the Sand Pine scrub habitat of Florida into categories of rarity. Determining if and in what way a particular organism is rare proved difficult, because the process requires exact specification of what is meant by "narrow,""restricted," and "small." Furthermore, the process requires choice of a scale for judging rarity and relies upon data that are likely to be of variable availability and reliability. We categorized rarity by several schemes, and they produced distributions of taxa among categories of rarity that largely were similar to one another but that diverged in telling ways. The distributions of taxa among categories of rarity produced by any scheme were different for scrub plants than for scrub amphibians and reptiles. Likewise, these distributions were different than those produced by previously published studies of rarity. We found that the results of our categorization schemes did not match particularly well with the official listing of scrub organisms as endangered or potentially endangered.  相似文献

Topography and vegetation of restored dunes on a developed barrier island were examined after a large-scale beach nourishment project. Restoration began in 1993 using sand-trapping fences andAmmophila breviligulata Fern. plantings. Subsequent growth of dunes was favored by installing new fences and suspending beach raking to accommodate nesting birds. Plant species richness, percent cover of vegetation, and height ofA. breviligulata were sampled in 1999 on seven shore perpendicular transects in six dune microhabitats (backdune, primary crest, mid-foredune, swale, seaward-most fenced ridge, incipient dune on the backbeach). A total of 26 plant taxa were found at all seven sites. Richness and percent cover were greatest in the backdune and crest, especially in locations that predated the 1992 nourishment. Richness was greater where fences enhanced stabilization. Fences initially compensate for time and space and allow vegetation to develop rapidly, but maintenance nourishment is required to protect against wave erosion and ensure long-term viability of habitat. An expanded environmental gradient is an option, where beach nourishment provides space for a species-rich crest and backdune to develop, while the incipient dune remains dynamic. Options where space is restricted include a dynamic, full-sized seaward section of a naturally functioning dune (truncated gradient) or a spatially restricted sampler of a wider natural dune (compressed gradient) maintained using fences. Expanded and truncated gradients may become self-sustaining and provide examples of natural cycles of change. Compressed gradients provide greater species richness and flood protection for the available space, but habitats are vulnerable to erosion, and resident views may be impaired.  相似文献

In temperate regions, winter presents animals with a number of challenges including depressed food abundance, increased daily energy requirements, higher frequency of extreme weather events and shortened day length. Overcoming these constraints is critical for overwintering survival and scheduling of future breeding of long-lived species and is likely to be state dependent, associated with intrinsic abilities such as food acquisition rates. We examined the relationship between environmental and intrinsic factors on overwintering foraging and subsequent breeding phenology of the European shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis, a diurnal marine predator. We tested a range of hypotheses relating to overwintering foraging time and location. We found that individuals greatly increased their foraging time in winter to a peak of more than 90% of available daylight at the winter solstice. The seasonal patterns of foraging time appear to be driven by a combination of light levels and weather conditions and may be linked to the availability of the shag's principal prey, the lesser sandeel Ammodytes marinus. There was no evidence that shags dispersed south in winter to increase potential foraging time. Foraging time decreased after the winter solstice and, crucially, was correlated with subsequent breeding phenology, such that individuals that spent less time foraging in February bred earlier. The relationship was much stronger in females than males, in line with their more direct control of timing of breeding. Our results demonstrate that pre-breeding intrinsic foraging ability is critical in determining breeding phenology.  相似文献

Subsidized predators may affect prey abundance, distribution, and demography. Common Ravens (Corvus corax) are anthropogenically subsidized throughout their range and, in the Mojave Desert, have increased in number dramatically over the last 3-4 decades. Human-provided food resources are thought to be important drivers of raven population growth, but human developments add other features as well, such as nesting platforms. From 1996 to 2000, we examined the nesting ecology of ravens in the Mojave Desert, relative to anthropogenic developrhent. Ravens nested disproportionately near point sources of food and water subsidies (such as towns, landfills, and ponds) but not near roads (sources of road-killed carrion), even though both sources of subsidy enhanced fledging success. Initiation of breeding activity was more likely when a nest from the previous year was present at the start of a breeding season but was not affected by access to food. The relative effect of environmental modifications on fledging success varied from year to year, but the effect of access to human-provided resources was comparatively consistent, suggesting that humans provide consistently high-quality breeding habitat for ravens. Anthropogenic land cover types in the desert are expected to promote raven population growth and to allow ravens to occupy parts of the desert that otherwise would not support them. Predatory impacts of ravens in the Mojave Desert can therefore be considered indirect effects of anthropogenic development.  相似文献

In studies of forest fragmentation, a fundamental inconsistency exists in the distance criterion used to define the discreteness of forest fragments. We examined three types of ubiquitous, narrow, forest-dividing corridors for effects that influence the relative abundance and community composition of forest-nesting birds. Fixed-radius (100-meter) point counts were conducted on 54 transects established along three width classes of corridors: unpaved roads (8 meters wide), paved roads (16 meters wide), and powerlines (23 meters wide). Transect locations were distributed equally among corridor edge, forest margin 100 meters from corridor edge, and forest interior 300 meters from corridor edge. Forest-interior species of Neotropical migrants had significantly reduced relative abundances on edge transects along 16- and 23-meter corridors, compared with 8-meter corridors and with forest interior points along all three corridor-width classes. At a landscape scale, the consequences of apparently small reductions in forest area by the presence of narrow forest-dividing corridors may be cumulatively significant for abundances of forest-interior species. Brown-headed Cowbirds were more abundant than 20 of 21 forest-interior Neotropical migrants. We found surprisingly high abundances of cowbirds associated with narrow forest-dividing corridors, especially those with mowed grass. Corridor widths as narrow as 8 meters produce forest fragmentation effects in part by attracting cowbirds and nest predators to corridors and adjacent forest interiors. The most serious implication of this study is that narrow forest-dividing corridors may function as ecological traps for forest-interior Neotropical migrants. We suggest that these widespread corridors may be inconspicuous but important contributors to declines of forest-interior nesting species in eastern North America.  相似文献

We collected data on plasma levels of testosterone+5a-dihydrotestosterone (T+DHT) and corticosterone (CORT) from adult female green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) from southern Queensland during distinct stages of their reproductive cycle. Those females capable of breeding in a given year had elevated plasma steroid levels (T+DHT 0.91ǂ.08; CORT 1.05ǂ.29 ng/ml), associated with follicular development, until courtship began in October. At the beginning of the nesting season in November plasma levels of CORT were related to when the female first nested (r2=0.06; F=10.45; P=0.01). However, they were not correlated with the number of clutches a female laid in that season (F=3.65; P=0.08). We repeatedly sampled 23 turtles over the nesting season and profiled changes in steroids immediately following oviposition of each clutch. Levels of T+DHT (range 0.41-0.58 ng/ml) and CORT (range 2.13-2.81 ng/ml) were similar through the early stages of the nesting season and inter-nesting period, and declined to near basal levels (T+DHT 0.37ǂ.03 and CORT 1.85-ng/ml) following the last clutch for the season. Steroid hormone levels were also low (T+DHT 0.38ǂ.16; CORT 0.46ǂ.21 ng/ml) in four independent post-breeding (atretic) females; samples for these females were taken at a time when body condition was presumably at the lowest for the season. Subtle changes in the nesting environment, such as variation in nesting habitat or the time of night that nesting occurred, were associated with a small and slow CORT increase. We suggest CORT is increased in nesting females to assist in lipid transfer to prepare the ovarian follicles and/or the reproductive organs for ovulation.  相似文献

Recent papers have shown that climate change affects many species, including birds. Several papers from different areas have devoted attention to the negative correlation between the dates of breeding and year, and also negative correlation between the dates of breeding and air spring temperatures. Recent work give some firm evidence for postulating causal relationship between spring temperature and laying dates. We used 31 years (1979-2009) of data from blackcap Sylvia atricapilla in Mokrice area, Northwestern Croatia to assess whether there has been any systematic change in breeding phenology through time.Among environmental factors possibly affecting the breeding date, consideration was given to mean monthly air temperatures (April-May). Over the past three decades, the breeding date of blackcap in our study population has changed significantly: They started breeding progressively earlier (11.77 days). Two regression analysis with laying date as criterion variable showed that spring temperatures can significantly predict variation of laying date and that there are also some other unknown factors which significantly explain variation of laying date. We conclude that blackcaps across Northwestern Croatia are breeding earlier and that mean air spring temperatures is probably the most important factor causing it, among other factors.  相似文献
