This paper reports the fluvial fluxes and estuarine transport of organic carbon and nutrients from a tropical river (Tsengwen River), southwestern Taiwan. Riverine fluxes of organic carbon and nutrients were highly variable temporally, due primarily to temporal variations in river discharge and suspended load. The sediment yield of the drainage basin during the study period (1995–1996, 616 tonne km–2 year–1) was ca. 15 times lower than that of the long-term (1960–1998) average (9379 tonne km2 year–1), resulting mainly from the damming effect and historically low record of river water discharge (5.02 m3 s–1) in 1995. The flushing time of river water in the estuary varied from 5 months in the dry season to >4.5 days in the wet season and about 1 day in the flood period. Consequently, distributions of nutrients, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) were of highly seasonal variability in the estuary. Nutrients and POC behaved nonconservatively but DOC behaved conservatively in the estuary. DOC fluxes were generally greater than POC fluxes with the exception that POC fluxes considerably exceeded DOC fluxes during the flood period. Degradation of DOC and POC within the span of flushing time was insignificant and may contribute little amount of CO2 to the estuary during the wet season and flood period. Net estuarine fluxes of nutrients were determined by riverine fluxes and estuarine removals (or additions) of nutrients. The magnitude of estuarine removal or addition for a nutrient was also seasonally variable, and these processes must be considered for net flux estimates from the river to the sea. As a result, nonconservative fluxes of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) from the estuary are –0.002, –0.09 and –0.59 mmol m–2 day–1, respectively, for dry season, wet season and flood period, indicating internal sinks of DIP during all seasons. Due to high turbidity and short flushing time of estuarine water, DIP in the flood period may be derived largely from geochemical processes rather than biological removal, and this DIP should not be included in an annual estimate of carbon budget. The internal sink of phosphorus corresponds to a net organic carbon production (photosynthesis–respiration, p–r) during dry (0.21 mmol m–2 day–1) and wet (9.5 mmol m–2 day–1) seasons. The magnitude of net production (p–r) is 1.5 mol m–2 year–1, indicating that the estuary is autotrophic in 1995. However, there is a net nitrogen loss (nitrogen fixation–denitrification < 0) in 1995, but the magnitude is small (–0.17 mol m–2 year–1).  相似文献

Bacterial activity related to sedimenting particulate matter   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The rates of sedimentation of particulate matter were measured at a station in the Eckernförde Bight, Baltic Sea, using sediment traps. Different parameters (C, N, chlorophyll a, phaeopigments, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), heterotrophic activity (glucose maximum uptake velocity, vmax), biological oxygen demand (BOD), and electron-transport-system (ETS) activity) were measured during a 1-year period to evalnate the composition, vertical distribution, and activity of microorganisms associated with sedimenting particulate matter. Measurements indicated that the organic fractions of particulate sedimenting matter were transformed considerably during sedimentation. The seasonal fluctuations showed higher heterotrophic activity durang summer and lower activity during winter. Laboratory experiments also indicated that an important part of planktonic particulate material was susceptible to mineralization within a short period of time: phytoplankton was mineralized by about 35% and zooplankton by about 18% per day, at 20°C; at 5°C mineralization was considerably lower (about 3 and 8%, respectively). Please address all correspondence to: Dr. R. Abstract

Seasonal and spatial changes in seston, (POC), particulate organic carbon, (PON) particulate organic nitrogen and chlorophyll-a concentrations were studied on a monthly basis in a Mediterranean shallow coastal area (Stagnone di Marsala, Western Sicily) in order to gather information on factors controlling particulate organic matter distribution and composition. Seston concentration and composition were connected to the main physicochemical and biological driving factors, such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, wind-speed and biomass of submerged vegetation. the Stagnone di Marsala is characterized by high temperatures with strong seasonality (range: 11–28°C), while values ranged from 33 to 45 salinity. Total suspended organic matter concentrations (by ignition loss) ranged from 2 mg l?1 (in summer) to 12mgl?1 (in winter) and chlorophyll-a concentrations from 0.02 to 2 μgl?1. Despite a low POC/PON ratios (ranging from 5 to 11), the ratio of POC to chlorophyll (CHL-a) displayed very high values (annual average of 647). the data reported in this study, highlighting the oligotrophy of the Stagnone di Marsala area, indicate that the trophic state of the basin was controlled by different degrees of wind exposure (mean monthly wind velocity at exposed sites ranged between 4.2 and 6.7 m s?1) and by gradients in vegetation cover. These two factors induced clear changes in the concentration and composition of the suspended particles, but played a different role in exposed and sheltered areas. Exposed areas with limited vegetation were characterized by large resuspension processes and wide temperature and salinity fluctuations caused by wind induced turbulence. in these areas, autotrophic biomass (as chlorophyll-a), due to phytoplankton and/or re-suspended microphytobenthos, appeared to play an important  相似文献

Productivity was studied in two diatom species, Chaetoceros armatum T. West and Asterionella socialis Lewin and Norris, which form persistent dense blooms in the surf zone along the Pacific coast of Washington and Oregon, USA. Past observations have shown that surf-diatom standing stock usually declines in summer along with concentrations of nitrate and ammonium. Using the 14C method, photosynthetic rates in natural surf samples were measured monthly for one year (October 1981 through September 1982) at a study site on the Washington coast. Also measured were temperature, salinity, dissolved nutrients, particulate carbon and nitrogen (used as estimates of phytoplankton C and N), and chlorophyll a. Assimilation numbers (P max) were higher in summer (5 to 8 g C g-1 chl a h-1) than in winter (3 to 4gC). Specific carbon incorporation rates (µmax) showed no obvious seasonality, mostly falling within the range of 0.09 to 0.13 g C g-1 C(POC) h-1. The discrepancy between the seasonal trends for chlorophyll-specific and carbon-specific rates reflects a change in the carbon-to-chlorophyll ratio. Because of seasonal differences in daylength and light intensity, daily specific growth rates () are thought to be higher in summer than in winter. Neither ammonium enrichment assays nor particulate carbon-to-nitrogen ratios provided convincing evidence for nitrogen limitation during summer, and the observed changes in diatom abundance cannot be explained on this basis. Both the high diatom concentrations and their seasonal variations probably are due mainly to factors other than growth rates; two factors considered important are diatom flotation and seasonal changes in wind-driven water transport. C. armatum usually dominates the phytoplankton biomass in the surf zone, and evidence suggests that this species is strongly dominant in terms of primary production.Contribution No. 1391 of the School of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, USA  相似文献

Zooplankton abundance and grazing on autotrophic and heterotrophic particulate matter were measured along a transect across Davis Reef (18°5S; 147°39E) and in the back-reef lagoon over tidal and diel cycles during austral winter (August 1984). Zooplankton entering the reef from the surrounding shelf waters decreased in abundance over the reef flat, presumably because of predation. Within the reef lagoon, maximum daytime densities of pelagic copepods occurred during high water, suggesting an external input. At night, water-column zooplankton biomass increased by a factor of 2 to 3 due to the emergence of demersal reef zooplankton. Zooplankton grazing rates on heterotrophic particulate matter (bacteria + detritus and Protozoa) compared to phytoplankton were higher on the reef flat than on the fore-reef or lagoon. Within the lagoon, zooplankton grazing rates on heterotrophic material were maximum during high water, coincident with maximum tidal concentrations of particulate organic carbon. The combined demersal and pelagic zooplankton community were often able to crop 30% of the daily primary production by >2µm phytoplankton. However, >50% of phytoplankton biomass was in cells <2µm, presumably unavailable to these zooplankton. Our particulate production and ingestion measurements, together with zooplankton carbon demand extrapolated from respiration estimates, suggest that the zooplankton community of Davies Reef derives much of its nutrition from detritus.Joint contribution from the University of Maryland, Center for Environmental and Estuarine Studies (No. 2015), and the Microbial Ecology on a Coral Reef Workshop (MECOR No. 19)  相似文献

Particle-size distributions and several biochemical components of seston were studied from October 1986 to December 1987 in surface waters of the Bay of Biscay. Variance partitioning of hydrographic and seston parameters indicates that, although seasonal variability related to the thermal cycle was important, most of the differences in seston concentration were caused by spatial components of variance. Changes in the vertical structure of the water column appeared to be the principal source of variability. Phytoplankton blooms in spring and fall and the effects of the coastal upwelling and the thermocline during summer were traced using seston concentration and biochemical composition. The different seston measurements were scaled according to their correlations with total concentration and particle size. Photosynthetic pigment biomass was related to both large and small partieles. However, concentrations of particulate proteins, lipids and carbohydrates were more related to small particles. Although not specifically analysed, low concentrations of inorganic particles and detritus can be expected in the study area, thus most of the particulate organic matter was associated with small, non-pigmented organisms, particularly in surface waters during the period of thermal stratification. The variability in concentrations of total seston and particulate organic matter was mainly due to variations in particulate proteins, lipids and carbohydrates; pigment concentrations were of secondary importance. Expressed as the ratio chlorophyll a: particulate protein-nitrogen, phytoplankton constituted an important fraction of the microplankton biomass only during spring blooms, when it averaged 75% of the particulate protein-nitrogen. In constrast, <30% of protein-nitrogen was related to chlorophyll a during the summer. These results suggest that an oligotrophic structure based on the microbial-loop prevails in microplankton assemblages of surface waters for most of the year.  相似文献

In the period from 1980 to 1984 organic phosphorus, nutrients, primary production rates (14C), chlorophyll a (chl a) standing crops, and basic oceanographic parameters were measured during 23 cruises at six stations in the open waters of the northern Adriatic Sea. These waters are significantly influenced by polluted Po River discharge. Organic phosphorus was correlated with several parameters which characterize phytoplankton activity and organic matter decomposition processes. In the late winter-spring period, organic phosphorus is produced during phytoplankton blooms. It is hypothesized that microzooplankton grazing is the main factor increasing the organic phosphorus concentrations in summer (up to 1.1 mol 1-1). Fall and winter had much lower values (below 0.3 mol 1-1) due to remineralization processes and an increased water mass exchange between the northern and central Adriatic regions. The direct contribution of organic phosphorus by freshwater discharge was not found to be significant. The higher organic phosphorus concentrations that can occur in low salinity waters are most likely due to their increased capability to support primary production.  相似文献

Observations have been made on seasonal fluctuations in dissolved inorganic nutrients, internal reserves of nitrogen and growth rates in Laminaria longicruris. The onset of winter growth in shallow-water stations (6 and 9 m) correlated well with improved dissolved nitrate conditions in the sea. During the winter, reserves of NO 3 - were accumulated by the plants and reached maximum values of 150 moles per g fresh weight in March. This represents a concentration factor of approximately 28,000 over the ambient levels, or an internal nitrogen reserve of 2.1% of the dry weight of the tissue. Depletion of this nitrogen pool followed the disappearance of the external NO 3 - with a lag period of up to 2 months. Rapid kelp growth was measured during this period. Reserves of organic nitrogen also reached maximum values in March and declined slowly throughout the summer into autumn. It is suggested that the combined inorganic and organic nitrogen reserves sustain the rapid growth rates into July and at reduced rate through the late summer. Fertilization of an experimental perimental kelp bed with NaNO3 increased the internal plant reserves of NO 3 - and produced a much improved summer growth rate. The enriched plants developed very small reserves of carbohydrate during the rapid summer growth phase.NRCC No. 15549.  相似文献

The heterotrophic phase of plankton succession in the Japan Sea   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
The vertical structure, composition and productivity of a plankton community was studied in the Japan Sea in June, 1972 during a period of thermocline formation; the parameters measured were: phytoplankton production and biomass; number, biomass, and production of planktonic bacteria; biomass of phagotrophic flagellates, ciliates and remaining microzooplankton. The concentration of micro- and mesozooplankton attained a basic maximum in a layer near the upper part of the thermocline. The biomass and calculated production of the heterotrophic part of the community exceeded considerably the amount of primary production. The heterotrophic phase of the seasonal succession of a plankton community in a temperate sea is described, when heterotrophic metabolism and production predominate. Heterotrophs at this stage use mostly energy from organic matter accumulated during the previous spring phytoplankton bloom.  相似文献

Suspended particulate matter was comprehensively investigated from 6 to 17 April 1986 in the lagoon of Tikehau atoll (15°00S; 148°10W). Dry weight (DW), particulate organic carbon (POC), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and chlorophyll a were measured for five size-classes (0.2 to 0.8 m, 0.8 to 3 m, 3 to 35 m, 35 to 200 m, and 200 to 2000 m). Taxa were identified and counted for the whole plankton (both autotrophic and heterotrophic). Particles <3 m accounted for 81% of the total POC (192 mg m-3), and detritus comprised 82% of the total POM. Phytoplankton (cyanobacteria plus algae) accounted for 35% of the living carbon, 75% of which consisted of heterotrophic bacteria and cyanobacteria. The zooplankton biomass was composed of 31% nano-, 26% micro-, and 43% mesoplankton.  相似文献

Coral reef lagoons have generally been regarded as sinks for organic matter exported from more productive reef front and reef flat zones. The object of this study was to examine the importance of detritus as a carbon source for benthic communities in the lagoon at Davies Reef, central Great Barrier Reef. We report the results of seasonal measurements, taken in 1986, of bacterial numbers and production, protozoan numbers, community primary production and respiration in the sediments of Davies Reef lagoon. Deposition rates of organic matter in the lagoon were also measured. Deposition rates (±1 SE) of carbon ranged from 9.2 (±1.5) to 140.7 (±10.3) mg Cm-2d-1. Deposition rates were highest in winter and spring, lowest in summer. Rates of bacterial production ranged from 4.7 (±0.2) pmol thymidine incorporated g-1 dry wt (DW) h-1 in winter to 23.5 (±1.0) pmol thymidine incorporated g-1 DW h-1 in spring. The number of ciliates ranged from 65 (±10) to 356 (±50) cm-3 through the year and the number of large (20 m) flagellates from 38 (±7) to 108 (±16) cm-3. There were no clear relationships between the sediment organic content, detrital input or temperature and the rates of bacterial processes, community metabolism or the standing stocks of microbes in the lagoon. The relative significance of detritus and in situ primary production as sources of carbon in the lagoon varied with season. In summer and autumn, detritus was less important than primary production as a source of carbon (4 to 27% of total carbon input). In winter and spring, detritus input became more significant in supply of carbon to the sediments (32 to 67% of the total carbon input). The lagoon does not simply act as a sink for carbon exported from the reef flat. We calculate that only 5% of the net reef flat primary production reached lagoon sediments in summer, but nearly 40% in winter.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of phytoplankton assemblages, chlorophyll, primary production and physical and chemical parameters were studied in the Pontevedra Ria in Galicia (NW Iberian Peninsula) from October 1997 to October 1998. In addition to the usual oceanographic periods described for the Galician Coast, two other periods were observed: a Prebloom or winter bloom, occurring during calm, sunny days in winter and a Continental period, related to the allochthonous intrusion of low salinity water from the Miño River in late spring. The phytoplankton biomass and production in both periods reached values of up to 145 mgChl-a m?2 and 3.6 gC m?2 day?1, respectively, which were similar to those found in summer upwelling blooms. Throughout the year, the phytoplankton biomass and primary production gradients along the ria’s axis were highly dependent on the balance between upwelling and runoff. When the latter prevailed, increased values were measured toward the inner ria, while the opposite pattern was observed during summer upwelling blooms. According to projections derived from climate models and the analysis of wind patterns, temperature and precipitation trends in the area, a drop in the productivity of the ria would be expected as a result of reduced upwelling intensity in summer and decreasing rainfall in spring. In any case the estuarine part of the ria would be the most seriously affected.  相似文献

Seston composition [particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate nitrogen (PN), phyto- and microzooplankton numbers and biomass] was investigated in the bottom waters of Great Lameshur Bay, St. John, Virgin Islands (USA), in October, 1970 during Tektite II Mission 17–50. Mean values of 67.4 g POC · I-1 and 7.2 g PN · I-1 were determined. A mean phytoplankton carbon content of 42.2 g · I-1 and zooplankton carbon content of 5.5 g · I-1 were calculated from counts. The phytoplankton consisted mainly of dinoflagellates 71.2% phytoplankton carbon. Copepods were the dominant zooplankters (61.8% zooplankton carbon), followed by larvaceans (30.9% zooplankton carbon). Organic carbon content of counted zooplankton faecal pellets ranged between 0.4 and 1.6 g · I-1, and amounted probably to about 15% of the total zooplankton carbon value. Plankton and detritus components as possible food for coral-reef animals are discussed. The ratio carbon: nitrogen of suspended particles is compared to that of sedimented matter.  相似文献

Effects of benthic macrofauna (Corophium volutator, Hydrobia sp., Nereis virens) on benthic community metabolism were studied over a 65-d period in microcosms kept in either light/dark cycle (L/D-system) or in continuous darkness (D-system). Sediment and animals were collected in January 1986 in the shallow mesohaline estuary, Norsminde Fjord, Denmark. The primary production in the L/D-system after 10 d acted as a stabilizing agent on the O2 and CO2 flux rates, whereas the D-system showed decreasing O2 and CO2 flux throughout the period. Mean O2 uptake over the experimental period ranged from 0.38 to 1.24 mmol m–2 h–1 and CO2 release varied from 0.80 to 1.63 mmol m–2 h–1 in both systems. The presence of macrofauna stimulated community respiration rates measured in darknes, 1.4 to 3.0 and 0.9 to 2.0 times for O2 and CO2, respectively. In contrast, macrofauna lowered primary production. Gross primary production varied from 1.06 to 2.26 mmol O2 m–2 h–1 and from 1.26 to 2.62 mmol CO2 m–2 h–1. The community respiratory quotient (CRQ, CO2/O2) was generally higher in the begining of the experiment (0–20 d, mean 1.89) than in the period from Days 20 to 65 (mean 1.38). The L/D-system exhibited lower CRQ (ca. 1) than the D-system. The community photosynthetic quotient varied for both net and gross primary production from 0.64 to 1.03, mean 0.81. The heterotrophic D-system revealed a sharp decrease in the sediment content of chlorophyll a as compared to the initial content. In the autotrophic L/D-system, a significant increase in chlorophyll a concentration was observed in cores lacking animals and cores with C. volutator (The latter species died during the experiment). Due to grazing and other macrofauna activities other cores of the L/D-system exhibited no significant change in chlorophyll a concentration. Community primary production was linearly correlated to the chlorophyll a content in the 0 to 0.5 cm layer. Fluxes of DIN (NH4 ++NO2 +NO3 ) did not reveal significant temporal changes during the experiment. Highest rates were found for the cores containing animals, mainly because of an increased NH4 + flux. The release of DIN decreased significantly due to uptake by benthic microalgae in the L/D-system. No effects of the added macrofauna were found on particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate organic nitrogen (PON), total carbon dioxide (TCO2) and NH4 + in the sediment. The ratio between POC and PON was nearly constant (9.69) in all sediment dephts. The relationship between TCO2 and NH4 + was more complex, with ratios below 2 cm depth similar to those for POC/PON, but with low ratios (3.46) at the sediment surface.  相似文献

During the September 1971 cruise of F. K. Alkor in the central Baltic Sea, the surface or summer water layer down to a depth of about 30 m was found to contain 187.4 g/l of particulate organic carbon, with a C:N (atoms) ratio of 8.97. This carbon was 44% (89.9 g/l) labile to bacterial decomposition, as determined by burning an aliquot of each sample in a CHN-analyser before and after maintenance in nutrientenriched sea water at 20°C for 3 months. The particulate material from the intermediate or winter water layer, with a depth ranging from 30 to 70 m, contained only 48% (43.1 g/l) of the labile carbon found in the summer surface layer, and had a significantly higher C:N ratio (11.25). These two facts indicate that a considerable breakdown of the organic material had taken place. The material, removed from the particulate state during this process, was 48% (89.7 g/l) of the original total particulate carbon, and was relatively nitrogen-rich, with a C:N ratio of 6.49. In this material, 52% (46.8 g/l) of the organic carbon was labile. The particulate material in the rest of the water column showed no significant changes until it reached the sediment. The slurry immediately above the sediment had a C:N ratio of 9.15, indicating the introduction of nitrogen from either dissolved or colloidal material. Labile carbon (44% of the total) was also present in sufficient quantities to support life and to make this an important diagenetic site.  相似文献

Particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen in sea water were measured in samples collected in the adjacent seas of the Pacific Ocean during the cruises of T. S. Oshoro-Maru (1969, 1970) and the R. V. Hakuho-Maru (KH-70-4, KH-72-1). High values were obtained in the northern North Pacific and the Bering Sea, the concentration of particulate carbon in the upper 50-m layer ranged from 35 to 550 g Cl-1. In the deep waters of these area, values above 50 g Cl-1 were frequently observed. The lowest values in the surface layer and deeper layers were obtained in the Japan Sea (23 gCl-1) and in the South China Sea (7 g Cl-1) respectively. A consistent minimum was located in the intermediate waters (100–400 m) throughout the entire region studied. Variation with depth was generally irregular with marked peak values in different layers. The POC distribution consited of these peak values and a relatively uniform background concentration. These background values slightly decreased with increasing depth and were different locally. Correlation analysis between carbon concentration and apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) of ambient water for the samples in the Japan Sea and the Sulu Sea showed that there was no systematic decrease of particulate carbon with increasing AOU. In these areas, the carbon concentration scattered in the higher AOU domain ranged from 10–100 g Cl-1. These observations support the conception that downward transport of particulate matter from the overlying surface layer in the adjacent seas of the Pacific Ocean may be fairly rapid.  相似文献

The supply of particulate material to the sea-bed as well as the oxygen consumption and the redox potential of the sea-bed were measured during a one-year period (1979/1980) at 60 and 90 m depth in the inner part of a west Norwegian fjord, Fanafjorden. At both sites, uniform sedimentation rates of total particulate material (825 and 885 g m-2 yr-1, respectively) and particulate inorganic material (576 and 616 g m-2 yr-1, respectively) were found. The sedimentation rates of particulate organic carbon (96 and 107 g m-2 yr-1, respectively) and particulate organic nitrogen (10 and 12 g m-2 yr-1, respectively) were low in winter, higher in summer and autumn, with maxima in May/June, reflecting similar maxima in the phytoplankton biomass in the area, with 6 to 8 wk delay. The oxygen consumption of the sea-floor was lowest in winter/spring and highest in summer. Thirtytwo and 38 g C m-2 yr-1 (respiration quotient=0.85) were metabolized by the sediment at 60 and 90 m, respectively. The simultaneous measurements of sedimentation rates and sediment oxygen uptake throughout a whole year demonstrated that the benthic mineralization is governed by the sedimentation over a longer time-scale, but that seasonal imbalances do occur. A box-model of the flux of particulate organic carbon to the sediment surface is presented, and includes the relevant processes and some quantitative estimates.  相似文献

Abstract

The origin and distribution of suspended organic matter, the trophic features and the stable carbon isotopic composition of particulate organic carbon (POC) were studied monthly in a Western Mediterranean semi-enclosed basin. Sampling stations were selected as a function of wind-exposure and the degree of vegetation cover and then compared with an adjacent unvegetated site. the predominant vegetation was seagrass (Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa) and Caulerpa prolifera. Water samples were analyzed for total suspended matter (inorganic and organic fractions), photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll-a and phaeopigments), dissolved organic carbon, particulate organic carbon and their isotopic composition. Temperature and salinity were also measured at the same sampling sites within range of Mediterranean limits. the suspended organic matter concentration was 1.77 ± 1.55 mg l?1; the chlorophyll-a concentration was low (0.35 ± 0.24 μg l?1); the disolved organic carbon concentration was 2,140 ± 2,010 μg l?1; the particulate organic carbon concentration was 212 ± 106 μg l?1 and the isotopic composition was 18.77 ± 2.51%°. There were significant temporal differences except for phaeopigments, POC and its POC isotopic composition, and there were no spatial differences other than for δ13C. This picture highlighted a general seasonal trend and trophical features similar to adjacent sea.

Spatial differences in δ13C showed that the source of suspended organic matter was different between stations as that between sources and wind-hydrodynamic constraints. In  相似文献

The seasonal pattern of sedimentation was determined over a 8-mo investigation period covering the productive season at a permanent station in the Southern Kattegat (Denmark) in 1990. The phytoplankton succession was characterised by a 4-mo long subsurface maximum associated with the pycnocline which was entirely dominated by the dinoflagellate Gyrodinium aureolum. The bulk sedimentation of organic matter took place during this period and accounted for >60% of the annual particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate organic nitrogen (PON) sedimentation. The spring bloom period contributed 60% of the sedimentation of intact phytoplankton cells, but only 20% of the POC and PON sedimentation. A minor fraction of the sedimenting matter from the subsurface phytoplankton maximum consisted of intact phytoplankton (<20%), suggesting that the phytoplankton was processed by heterotrophs and that it was mainly products from this activity which contributed to thevertical flux of organic matter. The variation in oxygen concentration below the pycnocline coincided with the pattern of sedimentation with a delay of 3 to 6 wk.  相似文献
