Despite increasing attention to management of headwater streams as sources of water, sediment, and wood to downstream rivers,
the extent of headwater channels and perennial flow remain poorly known and inaccurately depicted on topographic maps and
in digital hydrographic data. This study reports field mapping of channel head and perennial flow initiation locations in
forested landscapes underlain by sandstone and basalt lithologies in Washington State, USA. Contributing source areas were
delineated for each feature using a digital elevation model (DEM) as well as a Global Positioning System device in the field.
Systematic source area–slope relationships described in other landscapes were not evident for channel heads in either lithology.
In addition, substantial variability in DEM-derived source area sizes relative to field-delineated source areas indicates
that in this area, identification of an area–slope relationship, should one even exist, would be difficult. However, channel
heads and stream heads, here defined as the start of perennial flow, appear to be co-located within both of the lithologies,
which together with lateral expansion and contraction of surface water around channel heads on a seasonal cycle in the basalt
lithology, suggest a controlling influence of bedrock springs for that location. While management strategies for determining
locations of channel heads and perennial flow initiation in comparable areas could assign standard source area sizes based
on limited field data collection within that landscape, field-mapped source areas that support perennial flow are much smaller
than recognized by current Washington State regulations. 相似文献

The Fort Cobb Watershed in Oklahoma has diverse biogeophysical settings and provides an opportunity to explore the association of water quality with a diverse set of landscapes during both wet (April 2007‐December 2009) and dry (January 2005‐March 2007) periods. The objective of this work was to identify spatial patterns in phosphorus (P) (soluble reactive P [SRP] and bioavailable P [BAP]) associated with landscape metrics for two distinct streamflow regimes. Spatial autocorrelation of P was evaluated using contiguous (side‐by‐side) and upstream (upstream:downstream) connectivity matrices. Biogeophysical metrics were compiled for each contributing area, and were partitioned based on association to P concentrations. Results for both SRP and BAP indicated that spatial autocorrelation was present (p < 0.05). There was more spatial autocorrelation and stream P concentrations were three to five times higher in the Wet phase than in the Dry phase (p < 0.05). Analysis with recursive partitioning resulted in higher R2 with spatial autocorrelation than without spatial autocorrelation and indicated that lateral metrics (topography, soil, geology, management) were better predictors for SRP than instream metrics. During Wet phase, lateral metrics indicative of rapid surface and subsurface water movement were associated with higher P stream concentrations. This research demonstrated that we can detect landscapes more vulnerable to P losses and/or contaminations in either drought or very wet periods. 相似文献

The increasing availability of spatial data inspires the exploration of previously less-studied, yet regionally and nationally important areas, such as the Irrawaddy and Salween River Basins in Southeast Asia. This article documents our experience using global datasets to create environmental basin profiles in these two basins. Our approach draws on the concepts of freshwater vulnerability assessments that guided the selection of indicators. Data on land use, population distribution and fertilizer load were used. The unit of analysis was chosen to distinguish areas with similar bio-geographical characteristics, such as the critical delta areas. Results were further discussed for sub-areas that experience relatively the most pressure in terms of examined indicators within the studied area. The river mouths of both rivers had the most intensive land use and high population density. They are also home to important ecosystems and are sensitive to changes in upstream areas. Our study presents a concise and spatially distributed view of the environmental basin profiles of the Irrawaddy and Salween River Basins. The analysis also provides some interesting methodological insights about the potential of public macro-scale datasets for environmental assessment. The spatial approach allowed the analysis of different indicators, providing a platform for data integration as well as a visually powerful overview of the study area. Yet, the use of macro-scale datasets entails challenges. Despite improvements, the assessment process tends to be driven by the availability and quality of data, rather than by the actual research and management needs. The greatest utility of macro-scale datasets lies—at least in data-poor areas—in larger scale comparative analyses between the basins and their different sub-areas. 相似文献

Two groups of biologists were responsible for an unprecedented delay in completing a endangered species habitat conservation
plan in the Coachella Valley of southern California. While antagonism grew as each group relentlessly promoted their perspective
on whether to add a few areas to the habitat preserve, their inability to resolve their differences was not simply a matter
of mistrust or poor facilitation. I analyze how these biologists practiced science in a way that supported specific institutional
and ecological relationships that in turn provided a setting in which each group’s biological expertise was meaningful, credible,
and useful. This tight coupling between scientific practice and society meant that something was more important to these scientists
than finishing the plan. For both factions of biologists, ensuring the survival of native species in the valley rested on
their ability to catalyze institutional relationships that were compatible with their scientific practice. Understanding this
co-production of science and the social order is a first step toward effectively incorporating different experts in negotiation
and implementation of technically complex collaborative agreements. 相似文献

The authors' personal experience in watershed planning and decision making in the agricultural Midwest is described to illustrate
how: (1) formalization of the process of community-based management is not sufficient to guarantee that local people will
meaningfully consider scientific information and opinion when making decisions about watersheds, and (2) genuine social interaction
between scientists and nonscientists requires a considerable investment of time and energy on the part of the scientist to
develop personal relationships with nonscientists based on trust and mutual exchange of information. This experience provides
the basis for developing a general conceptual model of the interaction between scientists and nonscientists in community-based
watershed management in the agricultural Midwest.
An important aspect of integrating science effectively into community-based decision making is the need to revise existing
concepts to accommodate place-based contexts. Stream naturalization is introduced as an alternative to stream restoration
and rehabilitation, which are viewed as inappropriate management strategies in human-dominated environments. Stream naturalization
seeks to establish sustainable, morphologically and hydraulically varied, yet dynamically stable fluvial systems that are
capable of supporting healthy, biologically diverse aquatic ecosystems. This general goal is consistent with the types of
stream-management practices emerging from community-based decision making in human-dominated, agricultural landscapes. Further
research on the linkages between geomorphological and ecological dynamics of human-modified agricultural streams over multiple
spatial and temporal scales is needed to provide a sound scientific framework for stream naturalization. 相似文献

Algae offer a multiple-benefit opportunity as the products that can result from algal cultivation are numerous and diverse. However, commercial production of algal-derived materials is scarce and in Queensland Australia is virtually non-existent, partly due to challenges around readily available resources. In this work, the potential to regionally recycle waste nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and CO2 to support algal production is considered. A feature of the work is mapping the availability of the three resources for algal cultivation (N, P and CO2) together with climatic and land use considerations. Mapping resolution is defined by the boundaries of Queensland's (Australia) regional authorities. Layering the maps enables identification of regional hotspots for growing algae. Waste resources are shown to be most abundant in Mackay, Burdekin, Toowoomba, Cassowary and Bundaberg; regions which also have favourable eco-climatic conditions. Waste nitrogen is the limiting waste stream, in these and most other regions however additional requirements can be fixed atmospherically, whereas waste CO2 is shown to be abundant relative to waste nutrients. It is found that, based on the availability of waste phosphorus, the top 5 most suitable regions have sufficient resources to produce around 1.1 million t/y of algal biomass. This could potentially produce 309 ML of biodiesel which is 5% of Queensland's 2011 diesel oil sales. The outcomes of this work highlight new opportunities for industrial ecology in non-urban regions. 相似文献

The effects of viewing different types of information were investigated in people judging the social acceptability of alternative
forest harvest systems. Approximately 500 Tasmanians were shown still-simulated images of four harvest systems (a clearfell
system, two aggregated retention systems, and a selective system) and were asked to judge their acceptability. Individual
interviews were conducted with 12 of the participants. It was anticipated that people holding different beliefs about the
consequences of harvesting would have different responses to information. Cluster analysis was used to group participants
according to these beliefs. Responses to still images were compared with responses to two other types of information: information
about consequences of the harvest systems in the form of indicator symbols, and information about regeneration over time,
presented as visual animations. The effects of information differed across both harvest system and belief cluster groups of
participants. The largest effects of information occurred in people who held a mix of beliefs about consequences. Within this
group, participants who viewed the indicators rated a 30% aggregated retention system higher and selective harvesting lower,
than those who did not view the indicators. Viewing animated sequences led to slightly higher ratings of the more intensive
harvest systems and significantly lower ratings of the selective harvest system than those based on the still images. The
interview data provided examples of interviewees viewing information critically against their own values and beliefs. Only

Abstract: This paper provides an overview and summary of United States and Canadian federal, state, and provincial laws that offer some form of legal protection for environmental flows. Special attention is given to the new “second generation” law established in Texas and to ways western states are beginning to encourage transactions that help restore dewatered streams. Progress in the eastern states and some Canadian provinces to provide environmental flow protection is addressed. The vulnerability of four European aquifers with different hydrogeological and climatic characteristics was evaluated using the COP method. The results obtained were statistically analyzed by determination coefficients to measure which factor has greater importance in the vulnerability index. Furthermore, a new parameter has been designed to measure the vulnerability for the whole of the aquifer. The results demonstrate that COP is a useful method to assess the vulnerability of the test sites under consideration. The results obtained are coherent with the conceptual model of each pilot aquifer and the available hydrogeological information (hydrographs, isotopic data, tracer tests). Fissured carbonate aquifers (diffuse flow systems) are less vulnerable than karst aquifers (conduit flow systems) and the vulnerability index is more positively correlated with the O factor (unsaturated zone protection capacity) in the first case. The karst aquifers are more vulnerable than fissured aquifers and they show a higher correlation between the C factor (karst features) and the vulnerability index. Climatic variation (precipitation for example) influences the final vulnerability index of the aquifers according to the weight in the index and the spatial distribution. 相似文献

Pig farmers and scientists appear to have different perspectives and underlying framing on animal welfare issues as tail biting and natural behaviour of pigs. Literature proposes a joint learning process in which a shared vision is developed. Using two different settings, a symposium and one-to-one dialogues, we aimed to investigate what elements affected joint learning between scientists and pig farmers. Although both groups agreed that more interaction was important, the process of joint learning appeared to be rather potentially dangerous for the farmer–scientist relationship. During the symposium, farmers were only moderately open for scientific knowledge and the issue of tail biting had the tendency to run into a deadlock. The setting was an influencing element for the degree of success, because the dialogues did lead to improved mutual trust and understanding of each other’s framing and context. Another element was the degree of usability and absoluteness of scientific facts. They were frequently not concrete enough, too uncertain or not relating to the context of the farmers. In addition, some scientific facts were not recognized by the farmers. Both groups appeared to react and argue from their praxis, including their local environment, way of living, handling and understanding their environment. These praxises appeared to function as a filter, influencing the way of observing the environment, inducing ‘blind spots’ and misunderstandings. Stepping in each other’s praxis might provide concrete and fusing insights, required to realize joint learning processes. 相似文献

ABSTRACTCivil society’s potential as a force for solving complex societal problems – particularly those that require a challenge to the status quo – has provoked practical and theoretical interest, with its potential largely reliant on the perception that it is a ready if variable source of social capital resources. However, there are no guarantees that civil society will use its social capital for the greater good. Civil society encompasses a range of groups, some more inward-looking and oriented to private interests, and others more outward-looking and oriented to public interests. This divergent character of civil society was evident in the three campaigns for greenspace protection that eventually led to the creation of the Toronto region greenbelt, where civil society organisations (CSOs) from both growth and conservation camps contended for influence, each succeeding at different times. But over time (a time when state actors were increasingly in need of non-state partners to help solve complex governance problems), coalitions of environmental CSOs in the three campaigns – to protect the Niagara Escarpment, Oak Ridges Moraine and surrounding countryside – became more effective at influencing government to protect greenspace. A comparison of the coalitions using a framework based on key attributes of CSOs – missions and memberships – suggests that the environmental coalitions were more effective when they recruited more members with a diverse set of resources arising from both bonding and bridging social capital. In general, the more inclusive and public-interested the CSOs, the more effective the challenge to the status quo. 相似文献

本文建立了固相萃取与高效液相色谱/质谱(HPLC/MS)联用的方法来测定地表水中全氟辛酸(PFOA)及全氟辛烷基磺酸(PFOS)的含量。此方法中PFOA在水样中的线性范围为40ng/L到500ng/L,线性相关系数0.9986,PFOS在水样中的线性范围为5n异/L到500ng/L,线性相关系数0.9905。此方法中全氟辛酸及全氟辛烷基磺酸的平均回收率分另13为83.91%和86.63%。水样中全氟辛酸和全氟辛炕基磺酸的检出限均为0.5ng/L。方法准确、可靠,分析结果令人满意。采用此方法测定了上海部分地区地表水中全氟辛酸及全氟辛烷基磺酸的含量。实验结果表明,上海地区长江入海口处徐六泾段全氟辛酸的平均浓度是46.88ng/L,全氟辛烷基磺酸未检出;黄浦江段全氟辛酸及全氟辛烷基磺酸的平均浓度分别是1594.83ng/L(前处理后需稀释10倍以确保在方法线性范围内)和20.46ng/L。可见长江及黄浦江流域的全氟辛酸及全氟辛烷基磺酸的控制与治理亟待提上议程。 相似文献

However, if citizen science data are to be used by local communities, research is needed to determine which factors contribute to local community member trust in citizen science data, and how to increase the benefits and use of citizen science programs. This article describes the Groundwater Education Through Water Evaluation & Testing (GET WET!) program that employs middle and high school students, state and local government employees, environmental nongovernmental organization leaders, business representatives, college faculty and students, and other volunteers as citizen scientists to create a database of groundwater quality for use as a baseline for local water resources management. Data were gathered through semi‐structured interviews pre‐ and post‐involvement from 40 participants in this citizen science program conducted in five states in the northeastern United States. Results indicate that factors of trust are largely based on interpersonal trust and familiarity. We conclude with recommendations and future research that may improve local community member willingness to trust citizen science data generated by students. 相似文献

This study develops a modelling framework within which the effects of technology choice and policy on the sustainability of cities may be assessed. A life cycle accounting system for environmental impacts is combined with systems analysis, to represent the flows of resources into cities, the wastes and pollution generated and the technological choices available in an urban environment. The approach is demonstrated through a case study of the demand for paper and management of wastepaper. The case study questions the applicability for paper of the accepted 'hierarchy' of waste management techniques; incineration imposes lower environmental costs than recycling, and consequently lower total costs under some circumstances. 相似文献

The state of North Carolina's Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) conducts routine water quality monitoring
throughout the state to assess the health of aquatic systems. The current study reports the results of a retrospective (1990–2000)
ecological risk assessment of six heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, mercury, and zinc) in 17 North Carolina basins
that was conducted to estimate the risk of heavy metal toxicity to freshwater organisms and assess the sufficiency of NCDENR's
monitoring data to identify water-quality-related ecological threats. Acute and chronic ecotoxicological thresholds (ETs)
were calculated for each metal based upon the 10th percentile of species sensitivity distributions and were normalized for
water hardness. Statewide probabilities (expressed as percentages) of a random sample exceeding acute or chronic ETs among
the six metals ranged from 0.01% to 12.19% and 0.76% to 21.21%, respectively, with copper having the highest and arsenic and
mercury the lowest risk. Basin-specific probabilities varied significantly depending upon water hardness and presumably watershed
development. Although the majority of specific sites where data were collected were at low risk for metal toxicity, some specific
sites had a high probability of toxic events associated with one or more metals. Analytical detection limits for metals were
frequently higher than estimated chronic ET, limiting the ability to assess the risk of chronic toxicity in soft-water basins.
Results suggest risk-based criteria may be useful for assessing and validating the sufficiency of monitoring programs and
prioritizing management goals. 相似文献
