The vertical zonation of the three common rocky shore neritids at Mkomani, Mombasa, Kenya, Nerita plicata Linnaeus, N. undata Linnaeus, and N. textilis Dillwyn, as a function of feeding migrations and of size, was studied from 28 February to 24 March 1983. These snails perform feeding migrations at night starting at around mid-ebb tide and return to their resting positions with the flood tide. They remain in their resting positions throughout the day until the next nocturnal ebb tide. The direction of migration is sizerelated, with the larger snails of each species moving in the opposite vertical direction to the smaller ones, so that the populations as a whole exhibit no statistically significant net vertical displacement. The larger individuals of two of the species, N. plicata and N. undata, invariably move downwards to their feeding levels, while the smaller individuals move upwards; the larger individuals of N. textilis display a different pattern of migration, moving downwards on and around spring-tide days and upwards on and around neap tide days, while the smaller individuals move in the opposite directions. N. textilis rest above their feeding level around spring tides, and below that level around neap tides. It is demonstrated how these nocturnal migratory feeding rhythms are integrated into the spring-neap and seasonal cycles of the snails' daytime resting positions. The adaptive significance of these migrations is also discussed.  相似文献

Nerita undata, N. plicata, N. polita, N. albicilla and N. textilis are common intertidal gastropods on Aldabra Atoll. Each species prefers a different level on the shore and/or different degrees of exposure to wave action. Patterns of zonation, population size-frequency structure and biomass are given. N. undata exhibits 2 distinct ecophenotypes. Normal types occur on expsed to moderately sheltered shores but are replaced by type B in extremely sheltered conditions. Differences in shell morphology and population structure are also noted. Foraging by all species was confined to hours of darkness, generally at low tide. Activity of N. polita was induced slightly on overcast days. N. undata and N. textilis are cryptically coloured and often visible during the day. N. plicata is conspicuous, but is protected by a strong shell. N. polita and N. albicilla are often brightly and variably coloured, but both are concealed during daylight. No Nerita were found infected with trematodes, suggesting that the degree of infection was extremely low. Field observations on Nerita textilis Dillwyn inhabiting rocky cliffs at Sar Uanle (Southern Somalia) revealed that during the resting phase some of the snails are scattered on the upper cliff and some are clustered at lower levels. During feeding they all migrate downward, but to different extents. Maximum activity of both groups occurs during low water (LW) between midday and midnight. During spring tides (ST), the scattered snails reside higher up and make smaller feeding excursions than during neap tides (NT). During ST, some clustered snails join the belt of scattered individuals, while the trend reverses during NT. Investigations carried out under natural conditions suggest that Nerita plicata Linné is capable of orientating to the sun. Behaviour is predominatly photonegative during the morning, and photopositive during the afternoon. Accuracy of orientation improves as the brightness of the sun increases. At Watamu (Kenya), snails tended to orientate away from the sea at all times of the day. Orientatory performance is not affected by the temporal proximity of high or low water, and locomotory speeds seem to be unaffected by the strength of the sun, the time of day, or the state of the tide.  相似文献

Water current in 4 species of ascidians (Ascidia mentula Müller, 1776; Phallusia mammillata Cuvier, 1815; Styela plicata (Lesueur, 1823) and Microcosmus sabatieri Roule, 1885) has been recorded for the first time in situ with hot film probes. The mathematical treatment of probe calibration has allowed the evaluation of the characteristics of currents (minimal, maximal and average velocities) and the calculation of pumping rates. The method utilized yields qualitative and quantitative results: Pumping is continuous, and no particular rhythm shows up in the curves obtained. The velocity of the current does not change in the course of a recording, but it can vary from one experiment to another in the same individual; these variations are related to the variability of the diameter of the cloacal siphon rather than to a change in the rhythm of the ciliary activity. The average velocities are 3.42 cm sec-1 for A. mentula, 3.92 for P. mammillata, 3.30 for S. plicata and 3.79 for M. sabatieri. The pumping rates are fairly constant for the same individual. The means, expressed as ml x h-1 x g-1 organ dry weight are 3422 for A. mentula, 2070 for P. mammillata, 4892 for S. plicata and 3084 for M. sabatieri.This work was supported by the C.N.R.S. (L.A. A combination of a direct and an indirect method has been used for the first time in the study of filter-feeding in benthic invertebrates. Experiments over 12 h periods under constant temperature, pH, light and feeding conditions have been carried out with 3 species of ascidians: Ciona intestinalis (Linné, 1767); Phallusia mammillata (Cuvier, 1815) and Styela plicata (Lesueur, 1823). In C. intestinalis and P. mammillata, no pumping rhythm has been found; the water flow was constant for 12 h, except for some brief accidental interruptions. In S. plicata, the particular rhythm of spontaneous periodical contractions recorded during the experiment were related to gamete emission. The speed of water flow, which was fairly constant during recording, varied considerably during the 12 h period; these variations were generally related to modifications in the diameter of the cloacal siphon. The average speeds, in cm sec-1, lay between 5.7 and 9.5 for C. intestinalis, 5.2 and 19.4 for P. mammillata, and between 5.3 and 10.7 for S. plicata. Variations in the pumping-rate were small, oscillating around a mean value. In ml h-1 g-1 dry weight of organs these were 5,829 to 5,982 (mean=5,906) for C. intestinalis, 6,142 to 6,592 (mean=6,312) for P. mammillata, 1,0508 to 1,1505 (mean=1,0708) for S. plicata. Filtration was continuous without any particular rhythm; filtration rates in ml h-1 g-1 dry weight of organs varied between 4,244 and 4,418 (mean=4,331) for C. intestinalis, 4,620 and 4,960 (mean=4,779) for P. mammillata, 8,482 and 9,078 (mean=8,760) for S. plicata. The curves representing pumping and filtration were clearly parallel, indicating that filtration efficiency did not vary greatly during the course of an experiment; the rates obtained were 65 to 87% (mean=74%) for C. intestinalis, 66 to 88% (mean 76%) for P. mammillata, and 73 to 90% (mean=80%) for S. plicata. The slightly higher mean value in S. plicata is probably related to the higher complexity of the branchial apparatus of this species.  相似文献

Population energy budgets estimated on the assumption of steady state conditions for Nerita tessellata Gmelin, N. versicolor Gmelin, and N. peloronta L. on Barbados, W. Indies, are presented. Large differences in population structure, and hence energetics, occurred at different localities along the beach. Relatively high proportions (81 to 88%) of the assimilated energy were lost via metabolism. Assimilation efficiencies ranged from 39 to 43%, net growth efficiencies from 5 to 13%, and ecological efficiencies from 3 to 7%. For each species, production (P), energy flow (A) and total energy consumption (C) were expressed as functions of animal size, in order to facilitate gross estimations of the energy components for other populations for which data on size-frequency and density are available. Respiration studies of all three species in the laboratory failed to detect differences between respiration rates in air or under seawater.  相似文献

The monsoon-dominated Mandovi estuary is located in Goa state – a global tourist destination along the centralwest coast of India. In addition to factor analyses of water quality data, the water quality index (WQI), trophic state index (TSI) and percentage of freshwater volume in the estuary are calculated in order to infer the general waste assimilative capacity and prevailing water quality conditions. Factor analysis showed a dominance of PO4–P, NO2–N, NH3–N, total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity during southwest (SW) monsoon relative to other seasons. The WQI suggested that an increase in nutrients, turbidity and TSS during SW monsoon increase the WQI values beyond 2, rendering the water at some locations slightly polluted. During pre-monsoon, considerable increase in the WQI is observed at all the upstream stations rendering slightly polluted water at these stations. The TSI showed an average value of 46.95 during SW monsoon, 42.43 during post-monsoon and 48.42 during the pre-monsoon seasons, suggesting better productivity level during pre-monsoon, followed by SW monsoon, but the least during the post-monsoon. All the seasons, however, indicated a mesotrophic condition in the estuary and the assimilative capacity of the estuary is found to be in good to fairly good state (pre-monsoon?相似文献

The patchy distribution of rocky intertidal communities in the tropical eastern Pacific (TEP) may impose severe constraints on the genetic connectivity among populations of marine invertebrates associated with this habitat. In this study, we analyzed a portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene in two sympatric species of marine snails, Nerita scabricosta and Nerita funiculata, common inhabitants of the rocky intertidal from the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) and outer Pacific coast of the southern Baja California (Baja) peninsula to northern South America, to assess genetic connectivity among populations of each species. One of our aims was to determine whether the morphological, behavioral, and ecological differences observed among populations of both species throughout their range in the TEP corresponded to population genetic differences. In addition, we were interested in elucidating the demographic history of both species. We found no evidence of genetic structure throughout the Gulf of California and outer coast of the Baja peninsula region for either species. Comparisons between Gulf of California/Baja and Panama populations, however, showed significant genetic differentiation for N. scabricosta, but not for N. funiculata. The genetic differences between Mexican and Panamanian populations of N. scabricosta were consistent with previously reported ecological and behavioral differences for this species between these two distant regions. However, previously reported size differences between northern and central/southern Gulf of California individuals of N. scabricosta do not correspond with our findings of genetic connectivity among these populations. Results from neutrality tests (Tajima’s D and Fu’s F S), the mismatch distribution, and Bayesian skyline analyses suggested that both species have experienced dramatic population expansions dating to the Pleistocene.  相似文献

Fast-growing macroalgae, including Ulva lactuca Linnaeus, respond rapidly to changes in nutrient conditions, particularly to short-term N supply. This ability to rapidly take up and assimilate N contributes to the increasing occurrence of macroalgal blooms in heavily N loaded coastal ecosystems. To determine whether long-term nutrient histories affect short-term responses in activity of N-assimilating enzymes, including nitrate reductase (NRA) and glutamine synthetase activity (GSA), internal N storage, and macroalgal growth, we conducted an in situ nitrate fertilization experiment between 7 and 22 July 2004, with fronds of U. lactuca collected from estuaries with high and low N loads in Waquoit Bay, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA (N 41° and W 70°). Initial NRA, GSA, % N, δ15N, and growth of U. lactuca fronds were higher in the site where nitrate was in high supply. Differences in NRA persisted even after short-term experimental enrichment. Differences in internal N pools, δ15N, and growth, in contrast, mirrored the changes of nutrient supply. The rate of turnover of the internal N content of U. lactuca was quite short (<2 d), and turnover of enzyme activity may have been even shorter. N isotopic fractionation by U. lactuca appeared to be of small magnitude, unlike the case of phytoplankton, and similar to that of vascular plants. δ15N was a better indicator of short-term response to external and internal nutrient supplies in U. lactuca than enzyme activity or N content, and may reliably detect rapid changes in N availability, source, and uptake and assimilation processes.  相似文献

The southeastern United States supports one of two large loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting aggregations worldwide and is therefore critical to global conservation and recovery efforts for the species. Previous studies have established the presence of four demographically distinct nesting populations (management units) corresponding to beaches from (1) North Carolina through northeastern Florida, (2) peninsular Florida, (3) the Dry Tortugas, and (4) northwest Florida. Temporal and geographic genetic structure of the nesting aggregation was examined utilizing partial mitochondrial control region haplotype frequencies from 834 samples collected over the 2002 through 2008 nesting seasons from 19 beaches as well as previously published haplotype data. Most rookeries did not exhibit interannual genetic variation. However, the interannual variation detected did significantly impact the interpretation of spatial genetic structure in northeastern Florida. Based on pairwise F ST comparisons, exact tests of population differentiation, and analysis of molecular variance, the present study upholds the distinctiveness of the four currently recognized management units and further supports recognition of discrete central eastern, southern (southeastern and southwestern), and central western Florida management units. Further subdivision may be warranted, but more intensive genetic sampling is required. In addition, tools such as telemetry and mark-recapture are needed to complement genetic data and overcome limitations of genetic markers in resolving loggerhead turtle rookery connectivity in the southeastern USA.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of the C/N ratios and variations in δ13C and δ15N of suspended particulate matter were used to characterise their source in Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, Chilika, India. In addition, the significance of re-mineralised nutrients in the primary productivity of the shallow lagoon was also determined through quantification of the subsurface nitrogen uptake conditions at two relatively stable locations in the lagoon. The results indicated that the influence of terrestrial organic matter was the maximum in the northern sector and was relatively limited at the central and southern part of the lagoon. In situ 15N uptake experiments (daytime) under biogeochemically stable conditions revealed that the N uptake by phytoplankton ranged between 0.24 and 1.01?mM?m?3?h?1 during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. New production and regenerated production in the shallow lagoon was also estimated by calculating f-ratios (ratio of nitrate assimilation by phytoplankton to total nitrogenous nutrient assimilation, have been estimated), which varied from 0.52 in the post-monsoon to 0.38 in the pre-monsoon. Lowering of the f-ratio from post- to pre-monsoon indicated a dominance of mineralisation over the new production.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of Sesarma plicata (Grapsidae: Sesarminae), the most abundant crab species in a mangrove forest dominated by Kandelia candel at Jiulongjiang Estuary, China, was investigated through field and laboratory experiments. Feeding preference and consumption rates were determined on mature, senescent and decomposed leaves of Kandelia candel, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza and Aegiceras corniculatum. In the laboratory, S. plicata preferred leaves of K. candel over those of B. gymnorrhiza and A. corniculatum, and consumed significantly more decomposed leaves than mature and senescent ones, irrespective of crab size. Field experiments with limited power failed to reveal detectable species preferences despite more consumption of K. candel, but decomposed leaves of each species were again preferred. Leaf characteristics associated with preference changed with plant species and leaf state. Low tannins and high water content characterized the preference for decomposed state of leaves. Species preference was significantly and negatively related to crude fibers and C:N ratios for mature leaves, and crude fiber for senescent leaves, but significantly and positively related to water content for decomposed leaves. Leaf consumption rates averaged for all leaf categories from laboratory no-choice feeding experiments were 0.101, 0.055 and 0.017 gDW ind−1 d−1 for large, medium and small crabs, respectively. In this forest, mean density of S. plicata was 20.5 ind m−2 as assessed by a manual catching method. Leaf litter removal rate during neap tides by sesarmid crabs was about 1.33 gDW m−2 d−1 in April 2006. Zooplankton samples from the North Arabian Sea Environment and Ecosystem Research (NASEER) cruises were analyzed to determine the basic taxonomic composition, biomass (standing stock) and the total and copepod numeric abundance; these characteristics are discussed with reference to the different monsoon periods. Cruises carried out during March 1993 and May 1994, categorized as pre-southwest monsoon periods, and a cruise in December 1994, categorized as a northeast monsoon period, are discussed in detail. The biomass of January 1992 versus August 1992 and August 1992 versus March 1993 differed significantly (F = 6.44, P≤ 0.05). Ranges of highest and lowest biomass from each cruise are also given. Distinct “high” and “low” production areas of statistically significant difference (F = 12.67, P≤ 0.05) were observed. The “high” and “low” production areas were mobile and followed the surface wind circulation patterns (wind reversal pattern) during the northeast and southwest monsoon periods. Overall zooplankton showed a patchy distribution. The overall zooplankton abundance and total copepod counts differed significantly between the Cruises 3 versus 4 and 4 versus 5 (F = 15.67, P≤ 0.05 and F = 34.39, P≤ 0.05, respectively). There was no significant difference (P≥ 0.05) in biomass, between eutrophic and oligotrophic stations, suggesting no difference between near shore and offshore waters. Thirty-eight taxonomic groups were identified from the samples, with copepods being the most dominant group, followed by chaetognaths and siphonophores. Copepods constitute an average of 52.50 to 74.93% of the total zooplankton count and reach maxima of 92.14% of the total zooplankton count at the outset of the southwest monsoon (March 1993) and 91.39% at the outset of the active northeast monsoon (December 1994). Snails, Nerita lineata, were collected from 15 sites along the west intertidal area of Peninsular Malaysia from December 2005 until April 2006. The concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) were determined in the total soft tissues, operculums, and shells of the snails. Different patterns of heavy metal distributions were found in the different tissues (shell, operculums, and soft tissues) as well as spatial variations of heavy metal concentrations in the snails. This shows that the distribution of metals in the shells and the total soft tissues of N. lineata were not similar which could be due to different rates of metal accumulation, excretion, and sequestration. Since N. lineata is abundant on the rocky shores, below jetties and mangrove trees along the west intertidal area of Peninsular Malaysia and accumulate heavy metals, the snails are therefore potential biomonitors of heavy metal contamination for the west intertidal area of Peninsular Malaysia.  相似文献

In vertebrates haematological parameters are of considerable importance in the diagnosis of pathological disorders due to pollutants. Similar haematological studies in invertebrates are lacking. This is partly because a very few species have erythrocytes; arcid clams, however, are unique in having erythrocytes. Our experiments were designed therefore to evaluate the effect of naphthalene (N) on haematological parameters in the tropical arcid blood clam Anadara granosa L. The parameter studied were haemoglobin (Hb), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), haematocrit, erythrocyte fragility, haemolymph cations, free amino acids and osmolality. On exposure to naphthalene (N) in the sublethal range (5 to 15 g ml-1) Hb content decreased appreciably (P<0.001) compared with controls. Although ESR increased significantly (P<0.001), haematocrit decreased by 17 to 37%. Treatment with N for 96 h increased erythrocyte fragility and haemolysis; the latter by more than 40%. Both inorganic phosphate and free fatty acids increased with ambient concentration of N. Haemolymph cations — K, Ca and Mg increased significantly in relation to control. Na decreased, but not significantly. Free amino acids decreased significantly (P<0.001) with the ambient concentration of naphthalene, but haemolymph osmolality was not effected.  相似文献

Physicochemical analyses and cyanobacterial diversity of Ramgarh Lake water were performed at five sampling sites during winter, summer, and monsoon seasons. Higher load of solids, carbon, and nutrients were persistent throughout the analysis that indicates the conversion of lake from oligotrophic to eutrophic nature. High nutrients load enhanced cyanobacterial biomass, while low nutrients load produced relatively less biomass. The physicochemical parameters of water samples revealed minimum 2.9 mg L?1 dissolved oxygen (DO) at site-1 during summer, while maximum (5.6 mg L?1) at site-4 in monsoon season. Maximum biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) (40 mg L?1) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) (126 mg L?1) were recorded at site-1 during summer, whereas minimum BOD (18 mg L?1) and COD (52 mg L?1) were evident at site-3 in monsoon season. Minimum concentration of nitrate (0.72 mg L?1) was recorded at site-3 in summer, whereas maximum 2.7 mg L?1 was present at site-5 in winter season. The phosphate concentration was maximum (0.52 mg L?1) at site-5 in summer, and minimum (0.18 mg L?1) was observed at site-4 in monsoon season. Cyanobacterial diversity was higher during all the seasons, and dominated by the species of Microcystis at all the five sampling sites.  相似文献

Reef crabs, Ozius truncatus H. Milne-Edwards 1834, and gastropods, Bembicium nanum (Lamarck, 1882) and Nerita atramentosa Reeve, 1855, were collected from a South Australian rocky intertidal platform in April 1981. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine (1) the size of prey chosen, and (2) the energy gained by the reef crabs feeding on B. nanum and N. atramentosa. The time taken to break open and consume prey increased exponentially with prey shell height. Crabs with larger master claws had shorter handling times for a given prey size. When offered a range of prey sizes, crabs selected prey of a certain size, well below the maximum prey size that they could handle. The mean prey size selected by crabs did not concide with the size predicted to yield the maximum rate of energy gain. For example, one reef crab preferred B. nanum 5 to 8 mm in size, but the size class predicted to yield the greatest energy gain was 4 to 4.9 mm. The results of the laboratory prey-choice experiments are discussed in relation to the shore-level size gradients of B. nanum and N. atramentosa.  相似文献

Trickle irrigation, during establishment, increased survival two fold for seven species of shrubs and trees planted on coal mine spoil in the semiarid area of northeastern Wyoming, USA. Increased survival of irrigated plants persisted for five years after initiation of this study, which included two growing and winter seasons after cessation of irrigation. Species included green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica), Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia), silver buffaloberry (Shepherdia argentea), Siberian peashrub (Caragana arborescens), American plum (Prunus americana), ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), and Rocky Mountain juniper (Juniperus scopulorum).  相似文献

Experimental cultivations of post-metamorphosis juveniles were repeated in different seasons for Ciona intestinalis (L.) and Styela plicata (Lesueur) (simple ascidians) as well as for Leptolinum mitsukurii (Oka) and Botrylloides violaceus Oka (compound ascidians) at Aburatsubo-Moroiso Inlet near Misaki Biological Station (Japan). Growth in body length of simple ascidians was exponential during juvenile development up to near sexual maturity. C. intestinalis grew to sexual maturity in 1 month in summer and in 2 months in winter; S. plicata, in 2 months in summer and in nearly 5 months in winter. The doubling time decreased approximately twofold in the two simple ascidians with a 10C° increase in environmental temperature. Growth of colonies in compound ascidians was exponential after maturation of the first functional zooids. Sexual reproduction of L. mitsukurii and B. violaceus was continuous throughout the year, forming many generations in a year. Doubling time of colony growth in the two compound ascidians decreased approximately threefold with a 10C° increase in temperature.  相似文献
