A survey of cadmium residues in shellfish from the Atlantic Coast of South Carolina was undertaken to see the magnitude of cadmium contamination in the South Carolina Fishery. The shellfish collected were oysters, clams, crabs, shrimps, and scallops. Shellfish samples were dissected and pieces of edible muscle tissue were incubated in reagent grade nitric acid, at a constant temperature shaking-water bath at 58°C. Cadmium levels were determined by flame atomic absorption. The distribution pattern of the element Cd in shellfish is different in various species. It seems that shellfish contained more Cd content levels than other saltwater boney fish. It was found that Cd levels were relatively higher in oysters, shrimps, and clams than crabs and scallops. Larger shellfish had higher Cd content than the smaller shellfish of the same species. Elevated levels of Cd found in these shellfish species of edible fish were not high enough to render them dangerous for human consumption.  相似文献

Although fish intake has potential health benefits, the presence of metal contamination in seafood has raised public health concerns. In this study, levels of mercury, cadmium, lead, tin and arsenic have been determined in fresh, canned and frozen fish and shellfish products and compared with the maximum levels currently in force. In a further step, potential human health risks for the consumers were assessed. A total of 485 samples of the 43 most frequently consumed fish and shellfish species in Andalusia (Southern Spain) were analyzed for their toxic elements content. High mercury concentrations were found in some predatory species (blue shark, cat shark, swordfish and tuna), although they were below the regulatory maximum levels. In the case of cadmium, bivalve mollusks such as canned clams and mussels presented higher concentrations than fish, but almost none of the samples analyzed exceeded the maximum levels. Lead concentrations were almost negligible with the exception of frozen common sole, which showed median levels above the legal limit. Tin levels in canned products were far below the maximum regulatory limit, indicating that no significant tin was transferred from the can. Arsenic concentrations were higher in crustaceans such as fresh and frozen shrimps. The risk assessment performed indicated that fish and shellfish products were safe for the average consumer, although a potential risk cannot be dismissed for regular or excessive consumers of particular fish species, such as tuna, swordfish, blue shark and cat shark (for mercury) and common sole (for lead).  相似文献

A survey of cesium residues in fish from the Savannah River near the Savannah River Nuclear Plant was undertaken in 1983. Fish tissues, bone, fin, and muscle were incubated by the wet disgestion method for analysis. Seventeen fish samples were analyzed by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry procedure to determine cesium content. It was found that cesium concentration levels were consistently higher in the bones and fins than in muscles of all fish species. It seems that cesium concentration levels were relatively higher in fins than in bones. Cesium concentration levels in muscle tissues were negligible in all fish species.  相似文献

Commercial and recreational harvesting of shellfish within the coastal systems is usually very extensive. Since these ecosystems are frequently subjected to contamination, namely from agricultural, urban and industrial activities, and shellfish generally display a high capacity to bioaccumulate metals, populations may be at risk in terms of toxic metal exposure as a consequence of the harvesting and ingestion of near shore coastal marine organisms. Shellfish is regularly tested for concentrations of metals and other contaminants by legal authorities for commercial purposes, but although health officials use total metal as standards of food safety, only a part of the metal accumulated in shellfish is available to be assimilated and to cause toxic effect. In order to elucidate these issues an investigation on cockles inhabiting the Aveiro estuary was conducted. Element levels in sediments and wild Cerastoderma edule from sampling areas with different levels of contamination were measured; total element burden of cockles was related to accessible fraction for assimilation (TAM); element concentrations in wild C. edule were compared to EFSA (European Food Safe Authorities), USFDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) and FSANZ (Food Standards Australia and New Zealand) maximum levels (MLs); and the amount of cockle flesh needed to be consumed to exceed provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) was determined. The present work showed that although sediment metal and metalloid contamination in Aveiro estuary is low the concentration of elements in C. edule does not reflect the contamination of the sediment. Aluminium (Al) and mercury (Hg) were the less and nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) were the most bioaccumulated metals by cockles. Comparison of MLs from international organisations with the concentration of elements in C. edule showed that arsenic (As) and Pb exceeded standard levels. The ingestion of less than 1 kg for As and 1.5 kg for Pb of cockles would result in exceeding the PTWI threshold (0.015 and 0.025 mg kg?1 week?1 respectively) in any of the areas considered in the study. Cd and Al also appear to be limiting elements for human consumption. Indeed, consumption of more than 3.1 kg and 2.1 kg of whole cockle soft part from one of the study areas during a single week would lead to exceedance of the recommended PTWI value for Cd (0.007 mg kg?1 week?1) and Al (7 mg kg?1 week?1) respectively. The health concerns to humans from cockle consumption from Aveiro estuary are discussed.  相似文献

Four fish species were collected: brown trout, grouper, spotted tail bass, and black crappie. Fish samples were thawed and dissected. The pieces of edible muscle and liver tissues were digested in a reagent-grade nitric acid, in a constant temperature shaking-water bath at 58°C. Thirteen inorganic elements were determined by flame atomic absorption.The significant findings of this report are that inorganic elements, mercury, iron, copper, zinc, chromium, and nickel with the exception of magnesium show elevated levels in the livers than in the muscles of all the four fish species. It seems magnesium concentration levels were consistantly higher in the muscles than in the livers of all four fish species. It is found that calculations of muscle-liver ratios indicate that ratios in the range of 0.5 are preliminary indicative of environmental static conditions, whereas ratios in the range of more than one are indicative of environmental improvement.  相似文献

It was found that As, Se, Mg, Hg, Ca, Zn, and Fe levels were relatively higher than Pb, Cd, Ni, Co, Cr, and Mn in all fish species. In addition, in all fish species it seems that Pb, Cd, Ni, Co, Cr, and Mn levels were relatively higher than Cs and Cu. Cs and Cu levels were negligible in all fish species analyzed. Annual global aquaculture production has more than tripled within the past 15 years, and by 2015, aquaculture is predicted to account for 39% of total global seafood production by weight. Given that lack of adequate nutrition is a leading contributor to the global burden of disease, increased food production through aquaculture is a seemingly welcome sign. However, as production surges, aquaculture facilities increasingly rely on the heavy input of formulated feeds, antibiotics, antifungals, and agrochemicals. This review summarizes our current knowledge concerning major chemical, biological and emerging agents that are employed in modern aquaculture facilities and their potential impacts on public health. Findings from this review indicate that current aquaculture practices can lead to elevated levels of antibiotic residues, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, persistent organic pollutants, metals, parasites, and viruses in aquacultured finfish and shellfish. Specific populations at risk of exposure to these contaminants include individuals working in aquaculture facilities, populations living around these facilities, and consumers of aquacultured food products. Additional research is necessary not only to fully understand the human health risks associated with aquacultured fish versus wild-caught fish but also to develop appropriate interventions that could reduce or prevent these risks. In order to adequately understand, address and prevent these impacts at local, national and global scales, researchers, policy makers, governments, and aquaculture industries must collaborate and cooperate in exchanging critical information and developing targeted policies that are practical, effective and enforceable.  相似文献

通过前期的初步研究发现,挺水植物水田芥(Nasturtium officinale R.Br.)地上部分镉含量超过了超富集植物的临界值(100mg/kg),可能是镉超富集植物。为进一步了解水田芥在不同镉浓度梯度条件下的镉积累特性,通过盆栽试验研究了不同土壤镉浓度(0、25、50、75、100mg/kg)对水田芥生长特性、镉耐性和镉积累特性的影响。结果表明:随土壤镉浓度的增加,水田芥根系和地上部分镉含量增大,分枝数量、根系生物量、地上部分生物量、抗性系数及叶绿素SPAD值均呈降低的趋势。当土壤镉浓度大于0mg/kg时,随着土壤镉浓度的增加,水田芥的根冠比呈增加的趋势。土壤镉浓度为50~100mg/kg时,水田芥地上部分镉含量均大于100mg/kg,最大值为214.84mg/kg(土壤镉浓度为100mg/kg),地上部分富集系数(BCF)大于1,但转运系数(TF)小于1。在土壤镉浓度为50mg/kg时,水田芥地上部分镉积累量达到最大值,为192.233μg/株。因此,水田芥是一种镉富集植物,适合用于土壤镉污染浓度在50mg/kg以内的水田修复。  相似文献

The concentrations of aluminium (Al), arsenic (As), beryllium (Be), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), tin (Sn), thallium (Tl), vanadium (V), and zinc (Zn) were determined in soil samples collected in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid, Spain). Human health risks derived from metal inhalation and ingestion of soils were also assessed. For noncarcinogenic risks, the current levels of metals were usually lower than those considered as safe for the general population. With respect to the potentially carcinogenic elements As, Be, Cd, and Cr, the concentrations of Be, Cd, and Cr were lower than the reference values, while the average As concentration (3.4 microg/g) was higher than the safety limit for risk cancer. In general terms, the potential human health impact of ingestion/inhalation through soils of the analyzed elements seems to be rather small.  相似文献

Diet is an important source of perfluorinated compound (PFC) exposure and seafood is an important diet component for coastal populations. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the concentrations of PFCs in seafood. In this study, we measured thirteen PFCs in 47 fatty fish and 45 shellfish samples collected from six coastal provinces in China (Liaoning, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, and Guangdong), using an ultra-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS/MS). Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) was the dominant PFC in fatty fish which accounted for 38% of total PFCs, whereas perfluoroctanoic acid (PFOA) was the predominant PFC in shellfish. Concentrations of PFOS were ranged from less than 1.4 to 1627 pg/g wet weight in fatty fish, with the highest concentration in red drum from Jiangsu. Concentrations of PFOA in shellfish ranged from less than 5.4 to 7543 pg/g wet weight, with the maximum concentration found in briny clam also from Jiangsu. Compared with other studies, the PFC levels in seafood collected from our studied areas are relatively low. The estimated dietary intakes (EDI, pg/kg body weight /day) of PFOA, PFOS and total PFCs for the reference man (63 kg body weight) were calculated by multiplying the mean concentrations (pg/g wet weight) of PFOA, PFOS and total PFCs in six coastal provinces with the daily consumption data (g/day) from the fourth Chinese total diet study carried out in 2007. The highest EDI of PFOS and PFOA were found to be 694 pg/kg body weight/day and 914 pg/kg body weight/day in Guangdong and Jiangsu, respectively. However, the highest EDI of total PFCs was found in Fujian at 2513 pg/kg body weight/day. The EDI from seafood is much lower than the tolerable daily intake (TDI) recommended by the European Food Safety Authority in 2008 indicating low health risk of PFC exposure via eating seafood among the coastal populations in China.  相似文献

This paper describes the partitioning of iron, manganese, zinc, copper, cadmium, cobalt, nickel and lead between the soft tissues and the shells of the gastropod mollusc Patella aspera. Specimens of the limpet P. aspera were collected from a clean coastal marine site (CMS) and from an estuarine contaminated site (ECS) on the south coast of Portugal. Fe and Zn concentrations were significantly lower on both populations and less variable in the shells than in the soft tissues. In contrast Mn concentrations were higher in the shells than in the soft tissues at ECS. The partitioning factor (PF), defined as the ratio between the mean metal concentrations in soft tissues and in the shells, was maximum for iron and minimum for manganese. Between the soft tissues and the shells, only manganese at ECS recorded a significant relationship between metal concentrations, suggesting that the mechanism that controls the accumulation of this essential metal in both tissues was different from the others. From the obtained data, in biomonitoring sewage contamination studies, shells of P. aspera can be considered as a good indicator for Mn while the soft tissues for Zn. As copper, cadmium, nickel and cobalt concentrations were much higher in the soft tissues than in the shells (< 0.1 microg g(-1)), this indicates that the shells were not a good indicator for these metals because they do not reflect the environmental bioavailability as do the soft tissues.  相似文献

The dispersion of 222Rn from emitted waste gases at Wairakei geothermal power station, New Zealand, is modelled. It is concluded that resulting concentrations in the nearby township of Taupo will never exceed the maximum permissible in any meteorological situation. The greatest possible accumulation is calculated to be less than one eighth of the normal background radon concentration. A more realistic set of assumptions predicts long-term mean concentrations about 4% of background levels. A new geothermal power station, Ohaaki, a factor of three times more distant, is calculated to produce ten times lower concentrations than Wairakei. Measurements using a few passive solid-state radon detectors show that the natural variation of radon concentrations greatly exceeds any calculated contribution from either geothermal station; hence, much of the radon is probably due to more local minor sources. Local sources have increased due to draw-off of ground water by the Wairakei station. Thus, there could be some indirect contribution to radon concentrations by its operation. The measured six-month integrated mean radon concentration at Taupo is a significant fraction of the maximum permissible concentration. It seems likely that natural sources alone may lead to levels in air which are above the maximum when temperature inversion exists. It is concluded that these two geothermal power plants are unlikely to produce concentrations of radon hazardous to the population or to plant workers.  相似文献

This study investigates the distribution of three trace elements (Cd, Cu and Zn) in tissues (exoskeleton, abdominal muscle and hepatopancreas) of two shrimp species (Penaeus merguiensis and Penaeus semisulcatus). Special emphasis in this study was placed on evaluating the effects of storage conditions on redistribution of the elements and moreover the potential roles of metallothionein in tissue redistribution. The specimens were collected from the northern part of Persian Gulf during September 2001 and January 2002. The concentrations of metals in the tissues were measured using an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrophotometer (ICP-AES) and an ICP-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS). Metallothionein levels were determined using Differential pulse polarography. Results show a similar hierarchy for Cd and Cu concentrations among different tissues as follows: hepatopancreas>exoskeleton>muscle; and for Zn, the hepatopancreas again contained the highest levels, though there were not any significant differences in Zn concentrations between muscle and exoskeleton. Significant differences were found between the species in the case of Cd and Zn concentrations. Cd and Zn levels in P. semisulcatus were markedly higher than in P. merguiensis. In general, there were highly significant differences among the storage conditions from accumulation the selected trace elements and metallothionein in both species point of view, but in most cases, no significant differences could be observed among the fresh, refrigerated and frozen specimens of P. semisulcatus. In regards to Zn and Cu accumulation in edible (muscle) tissues of P. merguiensis, optimum conditions for frozen storage is -30 degrees C as ice-frozen, and in terms of short-term storage, 1-day refrigeration is recommended. The redistribution of Zn and Cu during the storage period can be attributed to the role of metallothionein in their transport from organ(s) to muscle during storage. The variations in pH values measured in the muscle of P. merguiensis in different storage conditions showed a similar trend with metallothionein, Zn and Cu. In contrast, it appears that cadmium is transported from muscle to the other tissues. Exoskeleton is probably one of the recipient tissues of cadmium. The inter-elemental relationships were assessed for each species, separately. A significant positive relationship was observed between the concentrations of Zn and metallothionein in P. semisulcatus, whereas in P. merguiensis, Cd concentrations decreased significantly with increasing metallothionein. Highly significant differences between the sexes in Cu and Zn contents could be detected. The differences between the sexes in the levels of Zn and Cu were significantly greater in P. semisulcatus. Highly significant size-related differences were found in the levels of Cd, Cu and metallothionein in the selected tissues of the shrimp species. Comparison between the mean concentrations of the elements in muscle tissue and existing guidelines indicate that in nearly all cases, the concentrations were well below permissible levels for human consumption. The only exception was observed regarding mean values of Cd, which was somewhat greater than some of the recommended levels.  相似文献

Barks of six species of trees were sampled at thirty-nine different locations in Ibadan, Nigeria and were analysed for the trace metals lead, cadmium, cobalt, copper, zinc, manganese, and iron. Lead levels in barks from areas with relatively high traffic density were generally higher than lead levels in barks from areas with low traffic density. The lead level recorded in the high traffic density areas, 40–140 μg/g, is low compared to values reported for barks of trees along busy roads in developed countries. For the other metals, no correlation with traffic density was observed.  相似文献

The distributions of caesium-137 and some naturally occurring gamma-emitters in a range of environmental samples, collected along the north-west Iberian coastline during April 1984, are presented. Samples, including surface waters, algae, sediments and fish, have been analyzed to establish accurate baselines for that region of the continental shelf closest to the NEA dumping site. Results indicate that caesium-137 levels were a factor of three lower than those typical of waters off the west coast of Ireland and are consistent with those expected from global fallout prior to the Chernobyl accident. The mean caesium-137 concentration in sea water at six well-separated stations near the coast was 3·85 ± 0·19 Bq m−3, whilst caesium-137 levels in widely consumed species of fish were in the range 1·1–6·2 Bq kg−1 (dry wt). It is estimated that caesium-137, through one year's ingestion of fish and shellfish, generates a collective dose equivalent commitment to the adult Galician population of 0·78 man-Sv, which is approximately 3% of the total annula collective dose equivalent from non-medical sources of radiation.  相似文献

The aim of our study was to establish changes in activity of important in detoxification enzyme-glutathione S-transferase (GST): in alimentary tract, fat body and Malpighian tubules of Spodoptera exigua larvae being under cadmium and zinc exposure through the first as well as the second generation. There was registered enhancement of the enzyme activity in the fat body and the Malpighian tubules caused by zinc as well as its decrease in the Malpighian tubules under cadmium action. Amounts of metals in the alimentary tract were either several times higher than in the diet ingested by larvae or than in the fat body. Metal concentration in the fat body correlated with the level of the enzyme activity (positive correlation for zinc and negative for cadmium). The effect of metal action differentiated dependently on time exposition.  相似文献

Bivalve molluscs from the Western coast of Senegal were sampled and measured for their cadmium, copper and zinc concentrations. This part of Africa has not been studied as regards heavy metal concentrations in the molluscs. The collected species are two small African bivalve molluscs, living in the sand: Cardita ajar and Dosinia isocardia; the African mussel Perna perna which is the only mussel of this genus in the Western coast of Africa and the oyster Crassostrea gasar, which lives in mangroves attached to the rhizophores, in the intertidal zone. C. gasar and C. ajar present higher cadmium concentrations, respectively 6.82+/-0.54 and 13.77+/-0.80 microg Cd/g (d.w.) than the two other species (D. isocardia: 3.88+/-0.31 microg/g and P. perna 2.37+/-0.22 microg/g. Copper and zinc concentrations are in the range of the published values for C. gasar and P. perna collected elsewhere in Africa. The results suggest that cadmium may be present in high concentrations in Senegalese waters where upwellings occur.  相似文献

The contentration of lead, cadmium, and mercury in 134 samples of imported fruits and vegetables marketed in Kuwait were determined using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer with a graphite furnace and the cold vapor technique. Results obtained showed that the concentration of these metal ions in most cases did not exceed the maximum permissible concentration of metals in fresh fruits and vegetables as restricted by some countries. Only a few samples of fruits and vegetables contained levels of mercury, cadmium, and lead which exceeded these maximum permissible levels.  相似文献

The geographic variation of silver concentrations in the black turban snail, Tegula funebralis, along the California coastline indicates an anthropogenic influence. Relatively elevated levels of the metal occur in organisms adjacent to major wastewater outfalls compared to those from less populated areas. This parallels the distributions of silver concentrations in other molluscs within the area. It, therefore, substantiates the proposal that the pattern is primarily due to external factors, such as wastewater discharges, rather than intraspecific differences among the samples.  相似文献
