The concentrations of sulphur dioxide, nitric acid, nitrous acid, hydrogen chloride, ammonia and sulphate, nitrate, chloride and ammonium in aerosols were measured continuously for two years at the rural site of Rotenkamp near Braunschweig in south-east Lower Saxony. The level of air pollution registered is typical for rural areas near industrial areas in Central Europe. Long-range transport of polluted air masses from Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony affects air quality when high-pressure areas over Eastern Europe result in easterly winds and reduced vertical exchange due to low inversion layers.  相似文献

The effects of three cultivars, two water regimes and two rates of applying nitrogen fertilisers were tested when studying the performance of rice (Oryza sativa L.) near to, and distant from, a fertiliser plant emitting atmospherically dispersed pollutants. The atmosphere near the fertiliser plant had average daily peak concentrations of 144 and 210 microg m(-3) of SO(2) and NO(2), respectively. Growth was less near to, than at a distance from, the fertiliser plant. On average it was decreased by water stress while the effects of different amounts of nitrogen fertiliser were variable. Whilst there were a number of interactions involving nitrogen and water treatments, the most consistent were associated with the responses of the three cultivars at the two locations. The three cultivars performed similarly at the unpolluted control site, but there were major differences at the polluted site. These were most clearly exemplified by changes in the proportion of dry matter allocated to yields of grain and straw. At the unpolluted site, grain accounted for about 30% of the combined yields of grain and straw. At the polluted site, grain accounted for 1, 23 and 31% of the combined grain and straw yields of cultivars CO 43 (the most sensitive), TKM 9 and GR 3 (the most tolerant). Grain yields were closely related to numbers of filled grains per plant. At the polluted site, 98% of grains failed to develop in CO 43, whereas in GR 3, the number of panicles, and therefore the potential number of grains, was significantly enhanced.  相似文献

In 1988 the effect of ambient levels of air pollutants on the nutrients status and grain quality of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Pelican) was investigated by comparing plants grown in open-top chambers (OTC) ventilated with ambient air (NF treatments) and charcoal-filtered air (CF treatments) at a rural site (Tervuren, Belgium). Spring wheat cultivated in NF OTC showed only minor differences in the P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn and Na concentrations of the different plant parts at final harvest, as well as organic and inorganic S fractions, compared to those of the plants grown in CF air. The plants' total P content was reduced, as well as the P and K concentration of the flour. The total S concentration of the flour was increased by 4%. Effects on N concentrations and grain quality were much more pronounced. At final harvest the N concentrations of straw and flour of the NF air treated plants were much higher compared to CF air. However, the N content of the aerial biomass and the grain N yield were not significantly affected, implying a reduction of other structual compounds. Nitrogen harvest index (NHI) and the ratio of NHI over grain harvest index (GHI), indicated a significant reduction of N translocation from the above-ground biomass to the grain. Changes in the N status and partitioning of spring wheat had an effect on the baking quality of wheat flour. Several parameters that are commonly used as an indication of baking quality have been significantly increased in the NF treatment: total protein concentration, Zeleny value, dry and wet gluten concentration. A slightly increased Hagberg value indicated a reduced alpha-amylase activity. The possibility of foliar N uptake as an additional N source, especially after anthesis and implications of increased protein production instead of carbohydrate synthesis are discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes the effect of chlorine pollution from an alkalies and chemical plant at Ranoli, near Baroda, on three tropical fruit tree species-Mangifera indica L. (mango) Manilkara hexandra Dubard. (rayan) and Syzygium cumini Skeels (Jamun). As compared to controls growing in a less polluted area, trees growing close to the plant showed reduced mean leaf area, a higher percentage of leaf area damaged, a reduction in fruit yield, chlorophyll pigments, protein and carbohydrate content, and higher accumulation of chloride in the foliar tissues. The accumulation of pollutaant, chloride, in the foliar tissues was very high in mango and jamun. Based on the degree of damage to the plants, the species studied were arranged in decreasing order of their sensitivity to chlorine pollution-mango, jamun and rayan.  相似文献

Spring wheat, Triticum aestivum, was grown in open-top field chambers and exposed during the whole life cycle to filtered and non-filtered ambient air. The relatively low ambient pollution level did affect plant growth but had no effect on the overall grain yield of the two spring wheat cultivars Echo (1987) and Pelican (1988). A reduced root growth was found in both years which could be attributed mainly to the deposition of NO2 and SO2. Effects on crop development most likely due to ozone were limited to the 1987 growing season during which the ambient ozone concentrations were enhanced compared to 1988. This resulted in a slightly increased grain harvest index, a reduced 1000-grain weight, straw yield and a greater reduction in root growth. Visible damage resembling ozone injury appeared both years during seedling growth.  相似文献

The urgent need to evaluate effects of air quality on plant growth in the field is discussed in relation to the difficulties which field-based studies pose in the interpretation of data. An initial study is described which aimed to overcome some of these difficulties and the data are discussed within the remaining limitations. The productivity of pure swards of Lolium perenne L. and Dactylis glomerata L., subjected to defoliation at different times of the year, was studied at field sites with different levels of sulphur dioxide pollution, for a period of three years. The field sites and propagation methods were chosen so as to minimise differences in environmental conditions other than the degree of air pollution. At the most polluted site, both species showed signs of visible injury during the first winter and subsequently produced much lower yields than grasses at the other sites. The effects of cutting regimes on the growth of D. glomerata and L. perenne differed for the three years of the study. However, there was a tendency for lower yields with frequent defoliation (every 6.5 weeks), as opposed to the less regular defoliation regimes. It was concluded that air pollution was at least partially responsible for the yield reductions recorded. However, it was considered that sulphur dioxide was not the only pollutant responsible.  相似文献

Variations occurred in the growth, assimilate partitioning, chlorophyll content, stem anatomy and leaf cuticular traits of Euphorbia hirta L. on long-term exposure to coal-smoke pollutants prevailing at two sites, one situated close to a railway loco shed (site B) and another in the vicinity of a thermal power plant (site C). The Botanical Garden of Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, was considered as a control site (A). Site C possessed a greater load of coal-smoke pollutants than site B. The present study had shown that coal-smoke pollutants have led to a decrease in plant height, jeopardised the production of leaves and enhanced their fall, and caused a reduction in leaf area, leading to decreases of the total photosynthetic area of the plants, with increasing pollution load. The losses incurred in chlorophyll a were relatively more than chlorophyll b and, as a result, the total chlorophyll contents of leaves were decreased in polluted plants. The dry weights of stems, roots and leaves were decreased to different degrees, whereas the shoot/root dry weight ratio was found to increase in the polluted environment. The growth of stem cortex and pith were slightly affected on site B, but showed significant decreases on site C, due to a greater load of pollutants. Decreased area of xylem tissue was found to couple with an increasing number of vessels of reduced sizes. The stomatal density, pore size and index showed decreases, while the epidermal cells were larger and trichomes longer, on both surfaces of polluted leaves.  相似文献

In this study we examined the possible effects of heavy metal exposure on the condition and health of great tit nestlings (Parus major) at four study sites along a pollution gradient near a large non-ferrous smelter in Belgium during three consecutive breeding seasons. Our results showed that nestlings were indeed exposed to large amounts of heavy metals. Excrements contained significantly higher concentrations of several heavy metals (silver, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, lead) near the pollution source than at study sites farther away. When taking into account the number of young in the nest at the time of sampling, nestling body mass and condition were significantly reduced at the most polluted site. Nestlings at the two most polluted sites fledged significantly later than at the least polluted site. We also observed growth abnormalities of the legs near the pollution source. Tarsus length, wing length and haematocrit values did not differ significantly among study sites.  相似文献

Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Turbo) was grown from seedling emergence to maturity (129 days) in chambers simulating the physical climate and ozone pollution of a field site in Northern Germany from 1 April to 31 July with a mean 1-h daily maximum of 61.5-62.4 nl l(-1) ozone compared to a constant low level of 21.5-22.8 nl l(-1) ozone. The two ozone levels were combined with either a current (374.1-380.2 microl l(-1)) or enriched (610.6-615.0 microl l(-1)) CO(2) atmosphere. Additionally, a leaf rust epidemic (Puccinia recondita f. sp. tritici) was induced at tillering stage by repeated re-inoculations with the inoculum formed on the plants. Leaf rust disease was strongly inhibited by ozone, but largely unaffected by elevated CO(2). Ozone damage on leaves was strongly affected by CO(2) and infection. On infected plants, ozone lesions appeared 2-4 weeks earlier and were up to fourfold more severe compared to non-infected plants. Elevated CO(2) did not delay the onset of ozone lesions but it significantly reduced the severity of leaf damage. It also enhanced the photosynthetic rate of flag leaves and increased the water use efficiency, biomass formation and grain yield. The relative increases in growth and yield induced by CO(2) were much larger on ozone-stressed than on non-stressed plants. Both ozone and fungal infection reduced biomass formation, number of grains per plant, thousand grain weight and grain yield; however, adverse effects of leaf rust infection were more severe. Elevated CO(2) largely equalized the negative effects of ozone on the photosynthetic rate, growth and yield parameters, but was not capable of compensating for the detrimental effects of fungal infection. The data imply that the impact of ozone in the field cannot be estimated without considering the predisposing effects deriving from fungal infections and the compensating effects deriving from elevated CO(2).  相似文献

Amounts of fluoride were measured in whole woodlice Oniscus asellus and Porcellio scaber, together with associated soil and litter, from 17 sites near an aluminium reduction plant at Holyhead, Anglesey, in North Wales. There was a strong positive correlation between amounts of fluoride in woodlice, soil and litter in all comparisons (P<0.02). Highest and lowest fluoride concentrations in woodlice differed by a factor of >50. Where both woodlice species occurred together at the more polluted sites, fluoride levels in Oniscus asellus were generally twice as high as those found in Porcellio scaber. At any given site, amounts of environmental fluoride were determined partly by distance and direction from the pot-rooms of the plant (a function of prevailing winds), modified by the presence of trees which acted as collectors for gaseous and particulate fluoride.  相似文献

The sulphur content and sulphur isotopic composition of Sphagnum as well as anionic compositions and sulphur isotope ratios of rainwater inputs and bog waters have been measured at Thorne Moors, a raised bog in eastern England. Rainwater sulphate isotopic composition shows the sulphur input at this site to be dominated by anthropogenic pollution from fossil fuel burning. Strong depletion of sulphate (low SO4(2-)/Cl-) and enrichment in 34S in sulphate occurs at depth in the bog porewaters due to bacterial sulphate reduction. Some surface waters have low SO4(2-)/Cl-) and are 34S enriched due to removal of sulphate by downward diffusion into a sulphate-reducing zone. Other sites have high SO4(2-)/Cl-) which appears to result from oxidation of organically bound sulphur in the peat. Sulphur is present in Sphagnum at around 0.2% by weight and is depleted by 0 to -9 per thousand in the heavier 34S isotope compared to sulphate. Comparison with similar data from pristine coastal sites shows that sulphur incorporation into Sphagnum is enhanced in the polluted site (as Sphagnum sulphur concentrations are higher at lower total sulphur inputs) and that sulphur incorporation is accompanied by a smaller isotopic shift than in the pristine sites. The data support a model of preferential incorporation of partially reduced sulphur species (probably HSO3-) into Sphagnum. In pristine sites these are only available as oxidation products of sulphide formed by sulphate reduction and are 32S depleted. In polluted sites this source is augmented by sulphur(IV) species in atmospheric inputs and the resultant mixture is less depleted in 32S. Thus, in the polluted sites more HSO3- is available for uptake and the isotopic shift between Sphagnum and aqueous sulphur species is smaller.  相似文献

In order to study the pollution gradient in the vicinity of an HF producing factory, a biomonitoring programme was performed employing VDI standardised grass cultures. Specimen plants of Lolium multiflorum cv. Lema were exposed at 11 sites over five monthly periods and the biomass produced was used for subsequent F-analyses. Meteorological data from the study region confirmed that wind direction accounted for changes in the pollution pattern over periods of time. Fluoride concentrations in the grass cultures, however, were unrelated to temperature and precipitation sums during the exposures. The biomass production of the grass cultures proved to be unrelated to these parameters as well but, with the enhanced growth of the plants, the fluoride concentrations were lower due to the dilution of the element with higher biomass accumulation. Because the contribution of particulate fluoride was unknown, both the washed grass cultures and the washing water were analysed in order to determine the amount of external fluoride. Washing reduced the fluoride concentrations by 22% on average, indicating that most of the element was internal fluoride stemming from stomatal uptake. Larger amounts of fluoride, however, could be washed off from grass cultures exposed at sites close to the factory indicating that dust emissions played a greater role at these locations. Because particulate emissions were supposed to arise from CaF2 and the waste-product anhydrite, grass cultures were also analysed for calcium and sulphur. While calcium concentrations were generally high but unrelated to fluoride, sulphur concentrations showed a slight relationship to the F-concentrations determined in the unwashed plants. Latter findings indicate the co-deposition of the two elements as surface bound, external loads, but bioindication could not clarify to what extent both elements were partitioned in the gas-to-particle phase. We therefore recommend using the grass culture method in air quality programmes to identify any exceedances of European feeding stuff standards in the vicinity of large emitters.  相似文献

Background, aim, and scope  Tobacco, Nicotiana tabacum, is a widely used model plant for growth on heavy-metal-contaminated sites. Its high biomass and deep rooting system make it interesting for phytoextraction. In the present study, we investigated the antioxidative activities and glutathione-dependent enzymes of different tobacco clones optimized for better Cd and Zn accumulation in order to characterize their performance in the field. Main features  The improved heavy metal resistance also makes the investigated tobacco clones interesting for understanding the plant defense enzyme system in general. Freshly harvested plant material (N. tabacum leaves) was used to investigate the antioxidative cascade in plants grown on heavy metal contaminated sites with and without amendments of different ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate fertilizers. Materials and methods  Plants were grown on heavily polluted soils in north-east Switzerland. Leaves were harvested at the field site and directly deep frozen in liquid N2. Studies were concentrated on the antioxidative enzymes of the Halliwell–Asada cycle, and spectrophotometric measurements of catalase (CAT, EC 1.11.1.6), ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.11), superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1), glutathione peroxidase (GPX, EC 1.11.1.9), glutathione reductase (GR, EC 1.6.4.2), glutathione S-transferase (GST, EC 2.5.1.18) were performed. Results and discussion  We tried to explain the relationship between fertilizer amendments and the activity of the enzymatic defense systems. When tobacco (N. tabacum) plants originating from different mutants were grown under field conditions with varying fertilizer application, the uptake of cadmium and zinc from soil increased with increasing biomass. Depending on Cd and Zn uptake, several antioxidant enzymes showed significantly different activities. Whereas SOD and CAT were usually elevated, several other enzymes, and isoforms of GST were strongly inhibited. Conclusions  Heavy metal uptake represents severe stress to plants, and specific antioxidative enzymes are induced at the cost of more general reactions of the Halliwell–Asada cycle. In well-supplied plants, the glutathione level remains more or less unchanged. The lack of certain glutathione S-transferases upon exposure to heavy metals might be problematic in cases when organic pollutants coincide with heavy metal pollution. When planning phytoremediation of sites, mixed pollution scenarios have to be foreseen and plants should be selected according to both, their stress resistance and hyperaccumulative capacity.  相似文献

We studied the impact of industrial pollution on population demography (age structure), growth and reproduction of crowberry, Empetrum nigrum L. Crowberry growing in severely polluted sites near non-ferrous smelters (at Harjavalta, Monchegorsk and Nikel) was on average twice as old as in unpolluted habitats, as indicated by the number of annual rings at root collar. Shoot length decreased both with plant ageing and due to pollution impact, while neither the proportion of generative plants nor berry production was affected by pollution or plant age. Our results suggest that death of the extant individuals of E. nigrum near the non-ferrous smelters is to a large extent explained by age-related damage of the main stem accelerated by pollution. Since vegetative propagation, seed germination and seedling establishment are hampered by soil toxicity, E. nigrum populations near the smelters continue to decline with ageing in spite of the gradual decline of emissions.  相似文献

The lichen Punctelia subrudecta (Nyl.) Krog was transplanted to 22 biomonitoring sites in a northwestern area of Córdoba city, Argentina and tested for chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, phaeophytin a, soluble protein, hydroperoxy conjugated dienes (HPCD), malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and sulphur accumulation. A pollution index (PI) was calculated for each biomonitoring site. The biomonitoring sites were set according to (1) traffic levels, (2) industrial density and (3) distance of the power station close to each site. The biomonitor's chemical response was associated with industries as well as power stations. Significant differences were observed in sulphur content, MDA concentration and PI values in lichen material transplanted to sites with different industrial densities. The higher values for these parameters were found at sites with high industrial levels. At the same time, significant differences were detected for sulphur content in samples at different distances from the power station, with higher accumulation in samples located far from the power plant. For MDA concentration, effect of different levels of industrial density was observed only at points close to the power station, probably because of higher levels of humidity near the power plant. For PI significantly higher values were observed in samples at points far from the power station and with high industrial density. This shows the additive effect of the principal emission sources that act on the response of P. subrudecta to air pollutants.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in soil pH, sulphate concentration and total-S were measured in two brown earth soils, sampled from deciduous woodlands. One site studied was exposed to severe atmospheric pollution from a coking works while the other site was relatively unpolluted but located in an area receiving wet and dry deposited acidity of greater than 1.0 and 2.4 kg H(+) ha(-1) year(-1), respectively The pH of soil at the heavily polluted site was lower than the relatively unpolluted soil at each monthly sample point, except during November. Annual average sulphate concentrations (LiCl-extractable) were highest in the soil exposed to coking pollution, where they peaked during summer and autumn. A marked difference in total-S was found in soils from the two sites, the heavily polluted soil showing the highest concentration with peaks again occurring during late summer and autumn. Only 4.0% (w/w) of the total-S of the heavily polluted soil occurred as LiCl-extractable sulphate, compared to 21.4% (w/w) for the relatively unpolluted soil, showing that organic sulphur is increased in brown earths following exposure to severe atmospheric pollution from the coking works.  相似文献

Tendergreen bean plants were grown from seeding to seed maturity under continuous exposure to HF gas at fairly uniform concentrations averaging 0.58, 2.1, 9.1, and 10.5 µg F/m3. Progeny of these plants and of comparable control plants were grown in a clean atmosphere to determine if subsequent generations were affected by HF treatment of the parents.

No effects of HF were found among the progeny of the plants grown at 0.58 µg F/m3. The F1 generation progeny of the other HF treated plants were less vigorous than control plant progeny, as shown by later emergence, smaller primary leaves, and slower stem growth. This probably was a consequence of the lower starch content of the seed of the HF treated plants. The primary leaves of some F1 progeny of the plants grown in the three highest HF treatments were severely stunted and distorted. This also may have been due to the low starch content of the seed, or perhaps it resulted from damage to the plumules in shriveled, distorted seed produced in these treatments.

Some of the early trifoliate leaves of many F1 generation progeny of the plants grown at 2.1 µg F/m3 and higher were abnormal in the separation and number of their leaflets. This abnormality apparently was heritable, for in the next (F2) generation it occurred most frequently among plants whose parents were abnormal. However, considerably fewer F3 generation plants had abnormal trifoliate leaves, indicating rapid reversal to the normal form.  相似文献

A pollution gradient was observed in precipitation, plants and soils sampled at different locations around a fluoride producing chemical plant in Germany. In all samples the influence of emissions was discernible up to a distance of 500 m from the plant. However, fluoride concentrations in plant bioindicators (leaves of birch and black berry) and in bulk precipitation showed a more pronounced relationship with the distance from the source than fluoride concentrations in soil. Vegetables sampled in the vicinity of the plant also had elevated concentrations of fluoride, but only the consumption of larger quantities of this material would lead to exceedances of recommended daily F-intake. The present study did not indicate the existence of low phytotoxicity thresholds for fluoride in the plant species used in the study. Even at very high fluoride concentrations in leaf tissue (963 ppm) plants did not show injury due to HF. Dust sampling downwind of the chemical plant confirmed that particulate fluoride was of minor importance in the study area.  相似文献

The lichen Canomaculina pilosa was transplanted to 21 sampling sites, plus two controls sites in a north-western area of Córdoba City, Argentina. The transplantation sites were set according to traffic levels, industry condition and distances from the power plant. On the transplanted lichens chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, phaeophytin a, soluble proteins, hydroperoxy-conjugated dienes, malondialdehyde concentration and sulphur accumulation were determined. A pollution index was calculated for each sampling site. The present study provides information about chemical parameters showing variations as the response of C. pilosa to different emission sources of air pollutants. The C. pilosa chemical response was mainly associated to industries. Significant higher values were observed in phaeophytin a/chlorophyll a ratio, sulphur content and pollution index values in lichen material transplanted at sites with industry. For the distance from the power plant category, only the hydroperoxy-conjugated dienes concentration showed significant differences. For the different traffic levels no significant variations were observed for any of the chemical parameters quantified.  相似文献

Field grown oats, Avena sativa L. cv Vital, were exposed to filtered and unfiltered air from anthesis until harvest in open-top chambers at a site in south-west Sweden. Ambient plots were used to study the influence of the chamber itself. With the exception of the number of grains per panicle, which was significantly higher in the charcoal-filtered treatment, no significant filtration effects were obtained for any of the plant growth parameters studied), i.e. grain yield, number of panicles per square metre, 1000-grain weight, straw yield and harvest index.) The chamber had a significant negative effect on grain yield, 1000-grain weight and straw yield. None of the yield quality parameters that were measured, such as crude protein content, crude fibre content, fat content, volume weight of the grain and water content of the grain at harvest, were significantly influenced by either air filtration, or the presence of the chamber. The chlorophyll content of the flag leaves was higher in the charcoal-filtered treatment than in the non-filtered and ambient air treatments towards the end of the experiment, indicating that filtering of the air delayed senescence. The decline of the shoot area after the onset of plant senescence proceeded faster in both chamber treatments. The faster development in the chamber was explained by the faster accumulation of thermal time in the chamber.  相似文献
