As operational and information technologies converge to allow for remote and real-time access to plant operating data and control functions, the process industry could become increasingly susceptible to cyber-attacks. Traditional hazard and risk analysis methods appear inadequate to identify, prevent, and mitigate such attacks. This paper discusses the significance of incorporating cybersecurity vulnerability analysis not just as part of process hazard analysis (PHA), but also in terms of protecting the process control network and implementing adequate safeguards in general against cyber threats. A layer of protection analysis (LOPA) is adapted to evaluate potential weaknesses and ensure safeguards for critical applications would be resistant to cyber-attacks. Integrating cybersecurity into hazard and risk analyses as well as other elements of process safety management (PSM) is demonstrated with examples, making the plant more resilient against both traditional and cyber threats.  相似文献

This study tested a relational demography model of workgroup identification. We theorized that early in workgroup formation, (a) racial identification would moderate the influence of racial dissimilarity on member communication behavior (frequency and length of verbal participation) during a group task, (b) member communication behaviors would mediate the effect of racial dissimilarity on workgroup identification, and that (c) these effects would be affected non‐symmetrically by racial group membership (White, Black). This model was tested among a sample of 211 undergraduates (113 White and 98 Black), working in 43 temporary workgroups. Whites' racial identification moderated the relationship between racial dissimilarity and member communication behaviors, which in turn partially mediated the effect of racial dissimilarity on workgroup identification, generally consistent with our model. Among Black workgroup members support for our model was limited. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Legislation giving prominence to psychosocial risk factors at work has changed the role of government occupational health and safety (OHS) inspectors in many countries. Yet little is known about how inspectorates have responded to these changes. Between 2003 and 2007 an Australian study was undertaken on OHS standards, entailing detailed documentary analysis, interviews with 36 inspectorate managers and 89 inspectors, and observations made when researchers accompanied inspectors on 120 typical workplace visits. Our study found that general duty provisions in OHS legislation clearly incorporated psychosocial hazards and inspectorates had introduced guidance material, pursued campaigns and increased interventions in this area. However, the regulatory framework remained narrow (focused on bullying/harassment, occupational violence and work stress) and workplace visits revealed psychosocial hazards as a marginal area of inspectorate activity. These findings were reinforced in interviews. While aware of psychosocial hazards inspectors often saw the issue as problematic due to limited training, resourcing constraints, deficiencies in regulation and fears of victimisation amongst workers. In order to address these problems a number of changes are required that recognize the distinctiveness of psychosocial hazards including their ‘invisibility’. Notable here are revisions to regulation (both general duty provisions and specific codes), the development of comprehensive guidance and assessment tools to be used by inspectors, greater use of procedural enforcement, and enhanced inspectorate resourcing and training. There is also a need to recognize complex inter-linkages between psychosocial hazards and the industrial relations context.  相似文献

Research in industry regarding race and sex access discrimination is reviewed. Review of sex discrimination research suggests that negative access discrimination exists for female applicants when the position is male-stereotyped and positive access discrimination exists when it is female-stereotyped. Results on race discrimination are few in number with mixed results, some showing reverse discrimination and others showing discrimination against blacks. More complex studies examining interactions between race and sex also provide mixed results. Recent evidence, which suggests that selection decisions are much more complex than have been studied, may account for the conflicting findings. Future research with more imaginative and complex designs and larger sample sizes is needed. Research designs should be selected to facilitate better measurement of the effects of civil rights law enforcement.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper was to examine the relationship of race and gender to managers' ratings of promotion potential for a sample of 1268 managerial and professional employees. Hierarchial regression analysis showed that controlling for age, education, tenure, salary grade, functional area, and satisfaction with career support, both race and gender were significantly related to promotion potential. Females were rated lower than males, and Blacks and Asians were rated lower than Whites. There were no interaction effects between race and gender.  相似文献

In the process industries, electrical circuit breakers are tripped for a variety of reasons including hazard prevention and mitigation. This paper will discuss the application of tripping electrical breakers for process safety reasons. It often occurs that a risk assessment study has determined the need to include the shutdown of a large electric motor as part of a safety instrumented function (SIF). In the process industries, it is common practice to control and protect large horsepower motors (typically 2000 HP and above), with medium-voltage switchgear breakers. Safety instrumented functions that include electric motors utilizing medium-voltage switchgear for tripping have unique final element subsystems, which require specialized knowledge in order to implement correctly. This paper will discuss the design considerations for integrating medium-voltage switchgear used for shutdown of an electric motor into a safety instrumented function. First, an overview of typical low and medium-voltage electrical equipment used for controlling and protecting electric motors will be discussed. Next, a review of generic sourced failure data for medium-voltage switchgear breakers will be presented. Focus will be on the taxonomy used to classify different breaker types and the relevant failure modes and effects used for quantifying performance. Next, specific SIF design details for tripping medium-voltage switchgear breakers will be analyzed in the context of achieving a certain integrity level. Parameters to be considered include hardware fault tolerance requirements, voting, available diagnostics, energize vs. de-energize to trip shutdown circuits, certified equipment vs. proven-in-use, and alternate means of shutdown (including manual intervention and protective relaying). This paper will also analyze the common electrical equipment that is shared among potential protection layers used to trip the same breaker, and determine how much credit can be taken considering common cause failure. Finally, inspection, test, and preventive maintenance (ITPM) of medium-voltage switchgear will be discussed as a means for maintaining the electrical equipment in the “as good as new” condition.  相似文献

When social scientists conduct research in organizations, they engage in relationships with respondents in order to obtain information. For studies of race relations in organizations, questions arise about how researchers take account of their organizational and racial group memberships. This field experiment tests hypotheses derived from embedded intergroup relations theory about the effects of questionnaire administration procedures and race of respondents on response rate, reactions to the research, perceptions of race relations, and satisfaction. Results provided support for several hypotheses that predict respondents will experience the research and respond differently when they answer questionnaires in race alike group meetings than when they report anonymously by mail.  相似文献

The nature of work has changed dramatically due to globalisation, migration, technological advances and the emergence of the knowledge-based economy. These changes have been accompanied by the increased prevalence of new and emerging types of risk to workers’ health and safety, such as psychosocial risks. This paper reviews the key regulatory and voluntary standards on occupational health and safety of relevance to the management of psychosocial risks in the workplace that are applicable to the European Union member states. The review indicates that regulatory standards set the minimum level of protection for workers and voluntary standards may further enable organisations to go beyond their legal obligations. However, the review also highlights that the terms ‘stress’ and ‘psychosocial risks’ are not mentioned explicitly in most pieces of legislation leading to lack of clarity on the terminology used. While voluntary standards seek to address this, very few provide specific guidance on the process of psychosocial risk management to enable organisations to manage psychosocial risks successfully. On the basis of the review, the case for the development of a voluntary standard for psychosocial risk management is presented. The paper further discusses the recent development of such a standard and its implications at the European level.  相似文献

Introduction: Although the strategic framework of the European Union in the field of Health and Safety at Work 2014-2020 considers as one of its main challenges to improve the prevention of diseases related to NERs (New and Emerging Risks) (European Commission, 2014) there are still not many studies in the literature related to them. Method: An exploratory study was carried out in order to get a picture of the NERs management in the UE-28 countries. The sample was extracted from the ESENER-2 datasets. ESENER-1 was carried out in 2009 and ESENER- 2 in 2014. This survey explores managers’ and workers representatives’ opinions on health and safety management. It surveyed over 49,000 enterprises in 36 countries. Results: The results obtained confirm that there are significant differences between the EU-28 countries in terms of the identification and the management of NERs. Conclusions NERs are becoming an increasingly studied phenomenon due to the changes that are taking place in the labour market: the percentage of temporary workers is increasing, the demands to the workers due to the globalization of the market are more complex and all this with an aging working force. Pratical A pplications It would be necessary to rethink the management of OHS, so that managers are aware that the combination of musculoskeletal and psychosocial risks should have a global approach in order to reduce accident and disability rates.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between organizational and personal (individual) factors with the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in office workers of the Iranian Gas Transmission Company. The participants rated two questionnaires – the standardized Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire to measure the prevalence of MSDs, and the Veterans Healthcare Administration All Employee Survey questionnaire (2004 version) – to measure psychosocial, organizational and individual aspects of job satisfaction and workplace climate. The highest prevalence of MSDs was found in the lower back (49.7%) and neck (49.0%) regions. Results of the logistic regression models showed that some psychosocial and organizational factors and also some individual factors were associated with prevalence of MSDs (p < 0.05).These ?ndings illustrate the need to consider all elements of the work system as a whole in future studies and in organizational planning.  相似文献

As a marked increase in the number of musculoskeletal disorders was noted in many industrialized countries and more specifically in companies that require the use of hand tools, the French National Research and Safety Institute (INRS) launched in 1999 a research project on the topic of integrating ergonomics into hand tool design, and more particularly to a design of a boning knife.

After a brief recall of the difficulties of integrating ergonomics at the design stage, the present paper shows how 3 design methodological tools—Functional Analysis, Quality Function Deployment and TRIZ—have been applied to the design of a boning knife. Implementation of these tools enabled us to demonstrate the extent to which they are capable ofresponding to the difficulties ofintegrating ergonomics into product design.  相似文献

In this research, a framework combining lean manufacturing principles and fuzzy bow-tie analyses is used to assess process risks in chemical industry. Lean manufacturing tools and techniques are widely used for eliminating wastes in manufacturing environments. The five principles of lean (identify value, map the value stream, create flow, establish pull, and seek perfection) are utilized in the risk assessment process. Lean tools such as Fishbone Diagram, and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) are used for risk analysis and mitigation. Lean principles and tools are combined with bow-tie analysis for effective risk assessment process. The uncertainty inherent with the risks is handled using fuzzy logic principles. A case study from a chemical process industry is provided. Main risks and risk factors are identified and analyzed by the risk management team. Fuzzy estimates are obtained for the risk factors and bow-tie analysis is used to calculate the aggregated risk probability and impact. The risks are prioritized using risk priority matrix and mitigation strategies are selected based on FMEA. Results showed that the proposed framework can effectively improve the risk management process in the chemical industry.  相似文献

Flare gas utilization in a cogeneration plant is an attractive proposition considering its environmental and economic incentives. Evaluation of the operational risk of integrating flare gas with cogeneration is complex due to the uncertainty in flare gas quality and process conditions. The current study delves into the change in operational risk after modifying the existing cogeneration process with the addition of fuel from flare gas. Based on the process hazards evaluation, the current study identified two critical loss control events (or top events) - boiler gas temperature exceeding operating design temperature and rich fuel mixture in the boiler firebox. The underlying causes that may contribute and lead to these loss control events were identified using fault trees and were updated to the existing cogeneration scenarios. Similarly, different consequential events that may arise from the loss control events were analysed using event trees with existing system safeguards. A Bayesian network model with its explanatory power mapped all the identified dangerous scenarios from the fault trees and event trees to predict integrated systems reliability and diagnose causal factors. Bayesian Network analysis illustrates the dynamic cause-effect relationship and determines the risk escalation due to the changes in the composition of flare gas that is fed to the boiler. The presence of a higher percentage of hydrogen (above 40 mol%) in the flare gas escalates the risk of lean air to fuel ratio in the boiler firebox and increases boiler radiation zone duty. These conditions are detrimental to the boiler firebox operation and can result in critical scenarios such as flame impingement and tube rupture. Additionally, other consequences-a steam explosion and boiler stack explosion were also investigated. However, their probability of occurrence was relatively insignificant with the given frequency of flare gas utilization in the cogeneration system.  相似文献

PROBLEM: Evidence exists to suggest that working with computer terminals and keyboards is associated with the development and exacerbation of a range of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Research has suggested that psychosocial factors may be of more importance than computer use factors in the development of MSDs in the computing workplace. METHOD: A questionnaire-based study was undertaken to test this hypothesis in a sample of 67 call center workers. A Spearman's rho was performed on the data, as well as chi(2) tests on the individual variables. RESULTS: It was found that overall, computer use factors were significantly associated with self-reporting of MSD symptoms, whereas psychosocial factors had no such association. However, certain individual psychosocial factors emerged as having a significant association with MSD symptoms. DISCUSSION: The findings suggest that specific areas of call center work have associations with poor worker health and possible long-term MSD problems. These areas appear to be workload and particular management-worker relations, rather than computer use. SUMMARY: This suggests that the relationship among computer use, psychosocial factors, and MSD is a complex area that would benefit from more research. IMPACT ON INDUSTRY: This study raises issues about the importance of psychosocial and organizational factors and employee welfare in the call center working environment.  相似文献

The alarm system given in industrial plants are massive and complex. Under such condition, critical alarms are overwhelmed by false and unnecessary alarms and thus result in severe safety issues. To address the problem, this paper proposes a probabilistic signed digraph (PSDG) based alarm signal selection method that requires achieving maximal system reliability. In this method, a PSDG model is firstly constructed to visualize the causal relations between process variables. Then the criteria of observability and identifiability are imposed to determine the candidate alarm variables that can qualitatively distinguish all assumed faults. Instead of selecting the minimum number of combinations of candidate variables, the alarm variables are optimized by a reliability formulation that takes into account the missed alarm and false alarm probabilities of the system; this formulation is solved by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) graph. Finally, the developed methodology is illustrated using a Tennessee Eastman process.  相似文献
