Coupled three-dimensional hydrodynamic and ecological numerical simulations were used to investigate the role of transport, stagnation zones and dispersion on inter-annual blooms of the diatom Aulacoseira sp. in the vicinity of the drinking water intakes of the Buenos Aires city (Argentina) in the upper Río de la Plata. Three different summer events were analyzed. First, a mild biomass bloom year (2006–2007), second, a high biomass bloom year (2007–2008) and third, a “normal” no bloom year (2009–2010). Simulated water height, water temperature, suspended solids and chlorophyll \(a\) concentrations patterns compared well with field data. Results revealed that the advection of phytoplankton cells via inflows to the Río de la Plata triggered Aulacoseira sp. blooms in the domain. In addition, excessive growth observed near the drinking water intakes, along the Argentinean margin, were associated with long retention times (stagnant region) and weak horizontal dispersion. Increased concentrations of suspended solids in the water column, in response to re-suspension events, did not prevent the blooms, however, were found to also play a key role in controlling the rate of phytoplankton growth. Finally, a non-dimensional parameter, R, that considers phytoplankton patch size, e-folding growth and dispersion time scales is shown to determine the potential bloom occurrences, as well as bloom intensity; R values higher than 5.7 suggest intense phytoplankton growth. For the mild biomass bloom year, \(R = 7.5\) , for the high biomass bloom year, \(R = 11\) and for the “normal” no bloom year \(R= 0.4\) .  相似文献

Dissolved organic substances (carbohydrates, organic nitrogen, free amino acids) were measured in the German Bight (North Sea) in June, 1981. During and before this survey, sea foam was observed in the east Frisian coastal water and it accumulated on the nearby beaches to an unusually high extent. In this coastal water area, a large Phaeocystis pouchetii Lagerheim bloom and very high concentrations of dissolved organic matter were found. The above dissolved organic substances were all positively correlated to a highly significant degree with P. pouchetii cell numbers in the bloom area. An influence of salinity (or river water) on this correlation could be excluded. Thus, exudation or decomposition products of P. pouchetii were most likely the cause of the unusually high concentrations of dissolved organic matter in the bloom area off the east Frisian coast, where P. pouchetii blooms have been reported for many years. Ammonia concentrations were very low in the P. pouchetii bloom area; this and the accumulation of dissolved organic substances might lead to speculation that decomposition of dissolved organic matter by bacteria could have been reduced due to antibiotic activity of P. pouchetii.  相似文献

Increasing concerns about the ecological impacts of ongoing and possibly worsening blooms of the toxic, carcinogenic cyanobacteria Lyngbya majuscula in Moreton Bay, Australia, led us to assess differences in meiofaunal prey assemblages between bloom and non-bloom substrates and the potential dietary impacts of dense L. majuscula blooms on the omnivorous benthivore, the Eastern Long-finned Goby, Favonigobius lentiginosus and the obligate meiobenthivorous juveniles of Trumpeter Whiting, Sillago maculata. Marked differences in invertebrate communities were found between sandy and L. majuscula bloom foraging substrates, with copepods significantly more abundant (18.49% vs. 70.44% numerical abundance) and nematodes significantly less abundant (55.91% vs. 1.21% numerical abundance) within bloom material. Gut analyses showed that bentho-planktivorous fishes exposed to L. majuscula in captivity had consumed a significantly greater quantity of prey by both total number (P < 0.0019) and volume (P < 0.0006) than fish exposed to sand treatments. Thus, it is likely for such fishes that L. majuscula blooms increase rates of prey encounter and consumption, with consequent changes in trophic relationships through shifts in predator–prey interactions between small benthivorous fishes and their meiofaunal prey.  相似文献

In 1982 and 1983, blooms of the planktonic alga Phaeocystis pouchetii were studied in the East Frisian coastal waters off Norderney, FRG. Morphological variability of the colonies, population development, effects on inorganic nutrient and oxygen budget, and the role in the seasonal plankton bloom sequence were investigated. in both years two separate Ph. pouchetii blooms occurred in late spring and early summer that were formed by the globosa-type exclusively. The pouchetii-type was only present during the interval between the first and second blooms in 1982. Growth conditions for Ph. pouchetii seem to be most favourable after a breakdown of a diatom bloom when the silicate reserves have been exhausted, phosphate concentrations are relatively low, but a rich supply of dissolved inorganic nitrogen is available. Contrary to diatom blooms, Ph. pouchetii blooms result in a high production of particulate organic carbon (POC). Another characteristic is the release of great amounts of dissolved organic substances, which cause extensive sea foam formation during the peaks and the subsequent breakdown of the blooms. Due to increased assimilation during mass development and intense disintegration after the breakdown, variations of the oxygen content of the water are significant. Presumably the intensity of blooms has increased in the past decade as indicated by sea foam formation which has actually been excessive in some years.  相似文献

Data on phytoplankton primary production, biomass, and species composition were collected during a 5 yr (1985–1989) study of Auke Bay, Alaska. The data were used to examine the interannual differences in the timing, duration, and magnitude of the spring phytoplankton blooms during each year and to relate these differences to interannual variations in weather patterns. Within any given year, a pre-bloom phase was characterized by low available light, low rates of primary production, low biomass, and predominantly small (<10µm) diatoms. During the primary bloom, integrated production rates rose to 4 to 4.5 g C m–2 d–1, and integrated biomass levels reached 415 to 972 mg chlorophyll m–2. Primary blooms were usually dominated by large diatoms (Thalassiosira spp.), and in a single year (1989) byChaetoceros spp. The primary blooms terminated upon nutrient depletion in the euphotic zone. Secondary blooms, triggered by nutrient resupply from below, occurred sporadically after the primary bloom and accounted for 4 to 31% of total spring production. The date of initiation and the duration of the primary bloom varied little from year to year (standard deviation 3 and 5 d, respectively). Seasonal production rates and biomass levels varied interannually by a factor of 2 to 3. In contrast, intra-annual variations of more than an order of magnitude, especially in biomass, occurred over periods as short as 10 d. These large variations over short time periods indicate the importance of synchronous timing between spring blooms and the production of larval fish and shellfish, which depend on an appropriate and adequate food supply for growth and survival. Parameters describing primary production (e.g. peak daily production, mean daily production, and total production during the primary bloom and the entire season) exhibited little interannual variation (coefficient of variation, CV = 10 to 19%), but a large degree of intra-annual variation (CV = 77 to 116%). Similarly, interannual variations in biomass (peak chlorophyll, mean chlorophyll) were also lower (CV = 20 to 33%) than intra-annual variations (CV = 85 to 120%).  相似文献

A restoration programme was introduced in the Mondego Estuary (Portugal) to recover seagrass beds of Zostera noltii endangered by eutrophication. A long-term survey of 10 years was used to assess the development of the processes involved, focusing one of the key species (Cyathura carinata, Isopoda). The mitigation measures implemented since 1998 (nutrient loading reduction, freshwater circulation improvement and seagrass bed protection) enhanced water quality and seagrass recovery, thus preventing the development of macroalgal blooms. C. carinata was resilient to the occurrence of floods and macroalgal blooms, although both events caused dispersion of individuals. This isopod was not much influenced by the changes occurring in the estuary, showing an unalterable population structure during the entire study period. After 1998, its density and biomass became more stable at an inner unvegetated sand flat area, where this isopod was most abundant; its population slightly increased in a bare mud flat at the middle section of the estuary; but it could not establish successfully in a downstream Z. noltii bed, contrarily to other common estuarine species. Apart from other unknown reasons, the disrupted balanced between trematodes and their hosts, caused by the eutrophication processes, may have an important role in the discontinuity of C. carinata at the Z. noltii bed. If the intertidal areas become fully restored to the original seagrass coverage, high prevalence and intensity trematodes may prevent this isopod and other crustaceans from recovering within the intervened areas, by enhancing host mortality and recruitment failure. In order to avoid this kind of situation, it may be necessary to survey the levels of parasite infestation within the target hosts and safeguard areas where crustaceans present healthy populations.  相似文献

The massive red tide bloom of Chattonella antiqua that occurred in Alexandria waters during late August/early September 2006 was monospecific, of very high density, and of wide spatial distribution, and was accompanied by mass fish and invertebrates mortalities. During the bloom, surface water temperature ranged between 26.5 and 28.5 °C and salinity between 23 and 27 psu. The bloom started under very high nitrate and ammonia levels; where the uptake of ammonia seemed to be faster than that of nitrate, and the bloom seemed to avoid the copepod grazing. Mass fish and invertebrates mortality was observed. Few cells of Heterosigma species have been reported for the first time in the Alexandria waters. Several environmental constraints (including physical factors), nutrient loading, copepod grazing and comparison with other data for C. antiqua blooms in Alexandria waters are also discussed.  相似文献

It is suggested that novel nuisance algal blooms can result from major shifts in N/P or NH4 +/NO3 - ratios. Inland hydraulic engineering caused a shift from P-limitation (before 1977) towards N-limitation (after 1977) in the Marsdiep area (Dutch coastal waters). Following this shift the colonial flagellate Phaeocystis sp. became more abundant and started to bloom during the nutrient-controlled period (later spring to autumn). Competition experiments showed that the N/P ratio can influence the species composition of marine phytoplankton. In addition, the natural distribution of some species like Rhodomonas sp. and Emiliania huxleyi may be affected by the frequency of nutrient pulses in the system. Phaeocystis was a poor competitor under P-limitation and a good competitor under N-limitation. Colony formation was absent under P- and NH4 +-limitation. Colonies were formed under NO3 --limitation. These preliminary results suggest that colony-forming Phaeocystic blooms may be restricted (besides light-controlled environments) to those N-controlled environments where nitrate is consumed by Phaeocystis. The distribution of Phaeocystis along the European continental coast is evaluated on the basis of its ability to compete for nutrients and to form colonies when nitrate is the major N-source.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of bacteria and metazooplankton on the production of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) and dimethylsulfide (DMS) during blooms of Emiliania huxleyi (Lohmann) Hay and Mohler in seawater mesocosms. The phytoplankton succession was marked by the rapid collapse of an initial Skeletonema costatum (Greville) Cleve bloom followed by a small E. huxleyi bloom. The collapse of the diatom bloom was accompanied by an increase in concentrations of dissolved DMSP (DMSPd) and bacterial abundance and activity (as determined by the thymidine incorporation technique). The increase in bacterial activity was followed by a rapid decrease in DMSPd concentrations which remained low for the rest of the experiment, even during the subsequent collapse of the E. huxleyi blooms. The absence of DMSPd and DMS peaks during the declining phase of the E. huxleyi blooms was attributed to the high bacterial activity prevailing at that time. The influence of metazooplankton grazing on DMSP and DMS production was investigated by adding moderate (24 mg dry weight m-3) and high (520 mg dry weight m-3) concentrations of Copepodite Stage V and adults of Calanus finmarchicus to two of four filtered (200 m mesh net) enclosures during the E. huxleyi blooms. The addition of C. finmarchicus, even in high concentrations, had no apparent effect on the dynamics of E. huxleyi, suggesting that the copepods were not grazing significantly on nanophytoplankton. The addition of copepods in high concentrations favored an accumulation of chlorophyll a and particulate DMSP. These results suggest that copepods were preying on the herbivorous microzooplankton which, in turn, was controlling the biomass of nanophytoplankton. DMS production was also enhanced in the enclosure with maximum metazooplankton biomass, suggesting that the grazing of C. finmarchicus on microzooplankton containing DMSP may contribute to DMS production. These results provide strong support to the emerging idea that bacteria and metazooplankton grazing play a dominant role in determining the timing and magnitude of DMS pulses following phytoplankton blooms.  相似文献

A population dynamics model was developed to simulate the effects of benthic macroalgae blooms (mostly Enteromorpha spp.) on the productivity of Cyathura carinata (Crustacea: Isopoda), a possible keystone species in the benthic communities of the Mondego estuary. The model describes C. carinata population dynamics, as well as the relationships between Enteromorpha biomass, Enteromorpha decaying rates, organic matter content in the sediments and detritus consumption by C. carinata, a detritic feeder. Model results support the idea that seasonal blooms of Enteromorpha determine a significant increase of organic matter content in the sediments, due to macroalgae decay, which initially contributes to enhance C. carinata consumption and growth rates, determining a significant increase in the biomass. Nevertheless, later, following the algae bloom, C. carinata biomass decreases, and reaches its lowest value, close to 0, when the algae crash. This effect is probably related with strong anoxic conditions, especially during night, due to high algal decomposition rates. In accordance with the model, migration of new individuals from adjacent areas must occur in order to recolonise the area affected by the algae bloom. Therefore, it seems reasonable to conclude that macroalgae blooms that are limited in space may favour C. carinata populations, but extensive blooms affecting the whole area of distribution of this species will determine its disappearance.  相似文献

Toxic cyanobacterial blooms, dominated by Nodularia spumigena, are a recurrent phenomenon in the Baltic Sea during late summer. Nodularin, a potent hepatotoxin, has been previously observed to accumulate on different trophic levels, in zooplankton, mysid shrimps, fish as well as benthic organisms, even in waterfowl. While the largest concentrations of nodularin have been measured from the benthic organisms and the food web originating from them, the concentrations in the pelagic organisms are not negligible. The observations on concentrations in zooplankton and planktivorous fish are sporadic, however. A field study in the Gulf of Finland, northern Baltic Sea, was conducted during cyanobacterial bloom season where zooplankton (copepod Eurytemora affinis, cladoceran Pleopsis polyphemoides) and fish (herring, sprat, three-spined stickleback) samples for toxin analyses were collected from the same sampling areas, concurrently with phytoplankton community samples. N. spumigena was most abundant in the eastern Gulf of Finland. In this same sampling area, cladoceran P. polyphemoides contained more nodularin than in the other areas, suggesting that this species has a low capacity to avoid cyanobacterial exposure when the abundance of cyanobacterial filaments is high. In copepod E. affinis nodularin concentrations were high in all of the sampling areas, irrespective of the N. spumigena cell numbers. Furthermore, nodularin concentrations in herring samples were highest in the eastern Gulf of Finland. Three-spined stickleback contained the highest concentrations of nodularin of all the three fish species included in this study, probably because it prefers upper water layers where also the risk of nodularin accumulation in zooplankton is the highest. No linear relationship was found between N. spumigena abundance and nodularin concentration in zooplankton and fish, but in the eastern area where the most dense surface-floating bloom was observed, the nodularin concentrations in zooplankton were high. The maximum concentrations in zooplankton and fish samples in this study were higher than measured before, suggesting that the temporal variation of nodularin concentrations in pelagic communities can be large, and vary from negligible to potentially harmful.  相似文献

Mesocosm experiments coupled with dilution grazing experiments were carried out during the phytoplankton spring bloom 2009. The interactions between phytoplankton, microzooplankton and copepods were investigated using natural plankton communities obtained from Helgoland Roads (54°11.3′N; 7°54.0′E), North Sea. In the absence of mesozooplankton grazers, the microzooplankton rapidly responded to different prey availabilities; this was most pronounced for ciliates such as strombidiids and strobilids. The occurrence of ciliates was strongly dependent on specific prey and abrupt losses in their relative importance with the disappearance of their prey were observed. Thecate and athecate dinoflagellates had a broader food spectrum and slower reaction times compared with ciliates. In general, high microzooplankton potential grazing impacts with an average consumption of 120% of the phytoplankton production (P p ) were measured. Thus, the decline in phytoplankton biomass could be mainly attributed to an intense grazing by microzooplankton. Copepods were less important phytoplankton grazers consuming on average only 47% of P p . Microzooplankton in turn contributed a substantial part to the copepods’ diets especially with decreasing quality of phytoplankton food due to nutrient limitation over the course of the bloom. Copepod grazing rates exceeded microzooplankton growth, suggesting their strong top-down control potential on microzooplankton in the field. Selective grazing by microzooplankton was an important factor for stabilising a bloom of less-preferred diatom species in our mesocosms with specific species (Thalassiosira spp., Rhizosolenia spp. and Chaetoceros spp.) dominating the bloom. This study demonstrates the importance of microzooplankton grazers for structuring and controlling phytoplankton spring blooms in temperate waters and the important role of copepods as top-down regulators of microzooplankton.  相似文献

Phytoplankton sampled at the chlorophyll maximum during the spring bloom at Loch Ewe, Scotland during 1986, were analysed using high-performance liquid chromatography for chloropigments and carotenoids. The day-to-day proportions of the pigments remained relatively stable throughout the bloom, with good preservation of chlorophyll a even at the sediment surface. Chlorophyllide a and phaeophorbide a appeared towards the end of the bloom. The major carotenoids remained stable throughout the bloom, but became rapidly degraded on sedimentation under the oxic conditions. The pigment data is related to the nutrient status of the bloom, when slow steady growth occurred without nutrient limitation. These data contrast sharply with data from the 1983 spring bloom at Loch Ewe when acute nutrient limitation took place.  相似文献

A bloom of the diatom Rhizosolenia chunii Karsten sensu Sundström occurred in Port Phillip Bay (38°S; 145°E), southeastern Australia, between late August and mid-October 1987. Coincident with this bloom, mussels (Mytilus edulis planulatus), scallops (Pecten alba) and flat oysters (Ostrea angasi) throughout the Bay developed a bitter taste that was so unpleasant and persistent that mussels became unmarketable for 7 mo. The bitter taste was concentrated in the digestive gland, which also showed extensive inflammation and degeneration. Digestive gland lesions were evident in mussels during September 1987, but became progressively more severe and, in the chronic end-stage were associated with high shellfish mortality 3 to 8 mo after the bloom had ceased. This study provides strong indirect evidence that the bitterness and the toxicity were caused by a bloom of R. chunii. R. chunii is the first species of diatom to be associated with shellfish mortality and, as the mortality occurred many months after the bloom had ceased, we suggest that the toxicity of certain algal blooms may be difficult to detect rather than uncommon.  相似文献

Zooplankton species composition and biomass were investigated during the spring of 1984 in three areas west of Ireland. In general, biomass of the gelatinous zooplankters [Salpa fusiformis (Cuvier) forma gregata and solitaria, Cymbulia sp., Euclio sp.; max. 360 mg Cm-3] exceeded that of other zooplankton namely copepods (max. 70 mg C m-3). Feeding by salps in the upper layers of all areas during the observed diatom spring bloom resulted in sedimentation of diatom-rich salp fecal pellets. This process ended the diatom spring bloom prior to nutrient depletion in surface waters and, thus, prior to mass sedimentation of algal cells.Publication No. 17 of the SFB 313 at Kiel University  相似文献

Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) for the identification and quantification of microbes has become a common tool for the study of harmful algal blooms (HABs). We developed a qPCR method for the diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia. Several species of this genus form toxic blooms through the production of the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA). Outbreaks of toxicity attributed to DA along the US west coast have caused sickness and death of marine mammals and seabirds through food web contamination. The method developed here quantifies Pseudo-nitzschia spp. at low abundances in natural samples, thereby, providing a method to improve our understanding of the environmental conditions leading to blooms of these species. This has been accomplished previously by techniques for identification and quantification that are slow and laborious compared to qPCR. The approach was successfully tested and validated using eight species of Pseudo-nitzschia and 33 non-target organisms and employed to follow local bloom dynamics.  相似文献

Fast-growing macroalgae, including Ulva lactuca Linnaeus, respond rapidly to changes in nutrient conditions, particularly to short-term N supply. This ability to rapidly take up and assimilate N contributes to the increasing occurrence of macroalgal blooms in heavily N loaded coastal ecosystems. To determine whether long-term nutrient histories affect short-term responses in activity of N-assimilating enzymes, including nitrate reductase (NRA) and glutamine synthetase activity (GSA), internal N storage, and macroalgal growth, we conducted an in situ nitrate fertilization experiment between 7 and 22 July 2004, with fronds of U. lactuca collected from estuaries with high and low N loads in Waquoit Bay, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA (N 41° and W 70°). Initial NRA, GSA, % N, δ15N, and growth of U. lactuca fronds were higher in the site where nitrate was in high supply. Differences in NRA persisted even after short-term experimental enrichment. Differences in internal N pools, δ15N, and growth, in contrast, mirrored the changes of nutrient supply. The rate of turnover of the internal N content of U. lactuca was quite short (<2 d), and turnover of enzyme activity may have been even shorter. N isotopic fractionation by U. lactuca appeared to be of small magnitude, unlike the case of phytoplankton, and similar to that of vascular plants. δ15N was a better indicator of short-term response to external and internal nutrient supplies in U. lactuca than enzyme activity or N content, and may reliably detect rapid changes in N availability, source, and uptake and assimilation processes.  相似文献

Diatom aggregate formation was analyzed using coagulation theory. Population dynamics models show that coagulation has an important impact on species succession during diatom blooms. When different species collide and form mixed aggregates this process causes interspecific interference competition within the diatom community. The outcome can be predicted by a set of simple differential equations. For a twospecies system the equations reduce to the Lotka-Volterra two-species competition model. The outcome of this interference competition depends on species-specific growth rates, cell sizes, stickiness and on the species composition of the seeding populations of a bloom. Due to mutual flocculation some species may disappear from the environment. Small and fast growing diatoms are favoured by high stickiness coefficients. The impact of stickiness on species succession was found to be most pronounced in eutrophic and hydrographically isolated environments. The sticking properties of the diatom Skeletonema costatum are discussed in an evolutionary context; we suggest that mutual coagulation increases the abundance of S. costatum relative to other diatom species in coastal areas. The model was tested on field data, and the predicted dynamics of a spring bloom was very similar to that observed.  相似文献

The effects of blooms of the cyanobacterium Trichodesmium spp. on penaeid prawn larvae were examined using in situ and laboratory rearing experiments and plankton surveys in Albatross Bay, Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia. The in situ experiments demonstrated that, during a bloom of Trichodesmium spp., larvae of the prawn Penaeus merguiensis did not develop beyond the first protozoea stage, and survival was low compared with times when diatoms were dominant in the same study area. Laboratory experiments confirmed the in situ results. None of the prawn larvae fed Trichodesmium sp. in laboratory experiments developed beyond the first protozoeal stage. In contrast, 94% of prawn larvae fed the green flagellate Tetraselmis suecica successfully developed to the second protozoea stage. Electron microscopy of larvae gut-contents revealed that Trichodesmium spp. were ingested by larvae but were of no nutritional value, resulting in starvation. A 7 yr plankton survey, from 1985 to 1992, showed that minimum abundance of prawn larvae occurs during the annual summer blooms of Trichodesmium spp. and that maximum abundance of prawn larvae generally occurs just after the bloom. There was a negative correlation between the abundance of larvae and the abundance of Trichodesmium at individual sites, one offshore and one inshore, indicating that the blooms affect the survival of larvae. We conclude that variations in both timing and magnitude of Trichodesmium blooms are important determinants of prawn larvae abundance in Albatross Bay.
