Market responses to hurricanes

This paper uses one of the strongest hurricanes to hit the US, Andrew in 1992, to define a quasi-random experiment that permits estimation of the responses of housing values to information about new hurricanes. Lee County, Florida did not experience damage from Andrew. The storm was a “near-miss.” We hypothesize that Andrew conveyed risk information to homeowners in the county. A difference-in-differences (DND) framework identifies the effect of this information on property values in areas likely to experience significant storm damage. The DND findings indicate at least a 19 percent decline in property values.

Externalities, Market Power, and Resource Extraction

This article analyzes the effect of market power in the presence of dynamic and biological externalities. When several countries harvest fish in international waters the evolution of fish population is affected by their joint action, thus generating a biological and a dynamic externality. If there is trade, the market-clearing prices depend on the harvesting and consumption in all countries. Therefore, market-clearing prices also generate an externality. We find a subgame perfect Cournot–Nash equilibrium and study the conditions under which it may be efficient. We also analyze the role of different externalities in generating inefficiency.

Thin versus Thick CO2 Market

The idea that trading is more costly the thinner the market is is common in most studies of market exchange with frictions. Surprisingly, this element is lacking from previous attempts to allow for frictions in pollution permit markets. This paper considers a CO₂ cap-and-trade model where trading costs develop endogenously as a function of the market size. The pre-trade allocation of permits determines whether the market size can be strongly influenced by expectations that have a role because of adjustment costs. The pre-trade allocation also sets preconditions for endogenously vanishing trading costs and thus has nonstandard effects on long-run trading levels and market allocations.

北京农贸市场常见淡水鱼体内抗生素残留调查研究

基于改进的超高效液相色谱-串联质谱(UPLC-MS/MS)的分析方法,通过对不同重量鲤鱼、鲫鱼、草鱼和鲢鱼中四环素类、磺胺类以及喹诺酮类等十种抗生素的残留测定,调查了北京市场水产品中抗生素的污染水平。结果表明,在所有样品中,只有磺胺二甲基嘧啶、麻保沙星、诺氟沙星和恩诺沙星四种抗生素检出,检出率分别为2.1%,4.2%,16.7%,46.9%,其他抗生素未检出。检出的四种抗生素中,磺胺二甲基嘧啶和麻保沙星只在草鱼中有检出,诺氟沙星和恩诺沙星在四种鱼中均有检出。恩诺沙星的浓度在鲤鱼、鲫鱼、草鱼和鲢鱼中依次降低。只有部分检出恩诺沙星超出50μg·kg-1的最大允许残留量。磺胺二甲基嘧啶、麻保沙星、诺氟沙星随着鱼重量的增大而变高,最高浓度为34.8、179.6、39.4μg·kg-1,而在个头小的鱼中未检出,这可能由生物累积造成。总之,北京市场的水产品存在抗生素的污染,但是大多数的抗生素的浓度都低于最大允许残留量。仍需加强水产品养殖环节中抗生素使用的管理。     

Further Results on Permit Markets with Market Power and Cheating

This paper examines a market for pollution permits in which one firm has market power and one or more firms is noncompliant. I show that the firm with market power may choose to hold more permits than it needs, effectively retiring permits from the market. I also show that some noncompliance may be socially desirable because it can mitigate the distortion caused by market power. Similarly, some degree of market power may be socially desirable because it can, in turn, mitigate the distortion caused by noncompliance.     

Can Eco-Labels Tune a Market? Evidence from Dolphin-Safe Labeling

In this paper we test whether the dolphin-safe labels altered consumer purchases of tuna. We also provide a partial measure of the total welfare effects of the dolphin-safe labeling policy. The results confirm our hypothesis that the dolphin–tuna controversy and the subsequent implementation of dolphin-safe labeling affected consumer behavior. Further, the paper provides market-based evidence that consumers can respond to eco-labels; the dolphin-safe label increased the market share of canned tuna. The welfare analysis provides a partial measure of society's willingness to pay to avoid personally contributing to dolphin mortality as a result of tuna fishing.
