Cooling Towers and the Environment

Measurements of natural draft cooling tower plume behavior, as well as meteorological variables, were obtained from aircraft flights near major power plants of the American Electric Power System. Persistence of the visible plume to great distances depends essentially on ambient humidity. Atmospheric stability at plume elevation was also important. Cooling tower-induced fog at ground-level was never observed in any of the tests, and aerodynamic downwash of the visible plume was absent also. The cooling towers did cause modification of natural clouds and they occasionally shadowed some local areas from the sun. Merging of the stack and cooling tower plumes was a common occurrence.     

Thoron in the Environment

Thoron (²²⁰Rn), an isotope of the radon family, is produced in the earth’s crust at a rate comparable to that of common radon (²²²Rn). Thoron’s average activity concentration in soil gas and ground-level outside air is comparable to that of radon. Recent data from Europe and the United States indicate that in terms of the energy of the alpha particle decays of thoron’s progeny, its concentration in indoor air is significant, typically about half that due to radon progeny. This paper reviews current knowledge about thoron and its progeny in the outdoor and indoor environments and discusses issues involved in assessing whether or not it is a significant indoor pollutant.

Trace Metal Pollution in the Environment

Trace metals introduced to the environment from fuel combustion, incineration, and industrial emission sources are causing increasing concern to air pollution researchers. Several metals in urban air, including lead and vanadium, are associated with particles in the predominantly submicrometer diameter range thereby presenting an inhalation threat. There is also growing evidence that some metals emitted from stationary sources are concentrated in submicrometer sized particles which may pass through emission control devices. This report summarizes the concentration and size of trace metals in urban air, the concentration ranges found in selected fuels and emission sources, and describes the areas where further studies are needed.

The Keynote Address of APCA’s 66th annual meeting was delivered by Bert S. Cross, a director of the 3M Company, St. Paul, Minn., and former chairman of the National Industrial Pollution Control Council.

Toxic Substances in the Atmospheric Environment Discussion

The Critical Review on Toxic Substances in the Atmospheric Environment was presented by Bernard D. Goldstein at the 76th Annual Meeting of the Air Pollution Control Association in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Goldstein summarized his paper, which had been published in the May 1983 issue of JAPCA. Prepared discussions presented at the Critical Review Session are reproduced here. In addition, comments made from the floor and through the mails have been formalized and are published along with closing remarks by Dr. Goldstein. Dr. Paul J. Lioy served as Moderator for the 1983 Critical Review Session.
