The occurrence of unusual symbiotic microorganisms was examined in the intestines of a range of fish from the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. The fish taxa examined included 26 species of the family Acanthuridae, as well as representatives of phylogenetically related and herbivorous taxa. The microorganisms, referred to as protists, were only found in herbivorous and detritivorous members of the Acanthuridae. Protists were not found in planktivorous acanthurids, nor in any members of the families Kyphosidae, Pomacentridae, Scaridae, Zanclidae, Siganidae and Bleniidae we examined. In addition, protists were absent from the herbivorous acanthurids A. xanthopterus and A. nigricans. A range of protist forms, characterized by differences in size (8 to 417 m), shape and mode of cell division (daughter-cell production and binary fission), was observed. The occurrence of these forms appeared to be correlated with host feedingecology. Large forms (>100 m) of the protists were only found in acanthurids which fed over hard-reef substrata. Smaller forms were found in sand-grazing and detritivorous species. One of the protist forms appears identical to protists previously reported from Red Sea acanthurids.  相似文献

The biochemical systematics of the subset of species of Stegastes (Pisces: Pomacentridae) available from coral reefs surrounding Guam, USA, was studied using three species of Pomacentrus as the outgroup. Analyses of allozymic variation at 14 presumptive loci (10 of which were polymorphic) using various evolutionary tree-construction techniques identified S. fasciolatus as the sister species of an assemblage comprised of S. albifasciatus, S. nigricans, and S. lividus: within this assemblage, S. lividus is the sister species of S. albifasciatus and S. nigricans, the pair of species which shared the most synapomorphic alleles and consistently exhibited the lowest degree of genetic distance relative to estimates for the other pairs of species studied. The consistency of ingroup topologies produced by parsimony analyses using Manhattan rectilinear distances computed from allele frequencies with those produced using the distance Wagner procedure and UPGMA (unweighted pair-group method of arithmetic averages) clustering, substantiates strongly the proposed phylogeny. The systematic scheme inferred from molecular data is concordant with predictions based on morphologic differences, i.e., differences in numbers of dorsal spines, that have been used as evidence in support of the proposal to partition Stegastes into at least two subgenera.  相似文献

We examine the feeding ecology of characteristic micronekton species inhabiting the mid-slope region (~700 to 1,500 m depths) off southern Tasmania. Five fishes, Diaphus danae, Hygophum hanseni, Lampanyctus australis (Myctophidae), Phosichthys argenteus (Phosichthyidae) and Chauliodus sloani (Chauliodontidae), were sampled by depth-stratified midwater trawling on a diel and seasonal basis. Overall, 74 prey taxa were identified from 2,132 stomachs. Euphausiids (mostly Euphausia spinifera and E. similis) and calanoid copepods (mostly Pleuromamma species) were the main prey of the three myctophids; P. argenteus ate fishes and decapods in addition to the euphausiids, while C. sloani ate only fishes. Copepods were less important in the diets of larger D. danae, L. australis and P. argenteus and were replaced by euphausiids in the myctophids and by fishes in P. argenteus. In autumn, when euphausiid biomass increased six-fold, all three myctophids and P. argenteus fed most intensively and consumed a high proportion of euphausiids. The three myctophids appeared to feed nocturnally. Differences in the timing and duration of feeding corresponded to differences in their spatio-temporal overlap with key prey. Daily rations of H. hanseni (1.93% dry-weight biomass) and L. australis (1.43%), estimated from data on stomach fullness, were typical for temperate myctophids and higher than that of the non-migratory P. argenteus (0.43%). The vertical flux of near-surface plankton production to the mesopelagic food web is based primarily on diel feeding in the upper water column (<500 m) rather than consumption of species that migrate seasonally into the deeper mesopelagic zone. Because species such as P. argenteus and C. sloani feed above the third trophic level, their predators, including the commercially important orange roughy, are feeding between levels four and five.  相似文献

The distribution of the main herbivorous fishes (Acanthuridae, Scaridae, Siganidae) was studied across a coral reef of the Jordanian coast in the Gulf of Aqaba (Red Sea). Visual counts were realized by diving along transects (200 m long and 5 m wide), parallel to the shore, at 10 stations located from the lagoon to 40 m deep on the outer reef slope. Herbivorous reef fishes reach their highest abundance on the reef front, where 234 fishes were counted per 1,000 m2. Their density decreases on the reef flat, with an average of 150 fish 1,000 m-2, and is lowest on the outer reef slope (69 fish 1,000 m-2). Surgeonfishes form 63% of the herbivorous ichthyofauna, parrotfishes 35%, and rabbitfishes 2%. Families and species display different distributions according to biota. The Acanthuridae dominate on the reef flat, whereas the Scaridae are more numerous on the outer reef slope. The evolution of the social structure of the main species was observed: the adults generally school in the lagoon and on the reef flat, but are mainly solitary on the reef slope. The distribution of juvenile individuals is more restricted: they are concentrated on the reef front and on the upper part of the reef slope.This study is part of a cooperation programme between the University of Nice (France) and the University of Jordan, to study the ecology of the coral reefs and the surrounding waters of the Jordanian coast (Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea)  相似文献

为评价乙酸铜对银鲳的安全性及毒性效应,采用静水急性暴露实验,研究了8个乙酸铜浓度梯度(0、0.150、0.206、0.282、0.387、0.531、0.729、1.00 mg·L~(-1))对银鲳幼鱼的急性毒性,以肝脏和鳃组织的超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)、过氧化氢酶(CAT)、谷胱甘肽过氧化酶(GSH—PX)以及谷胱甘肽巯基转移酶(GST)活性为指标研究乙酸铜对银鲳幼鱼的毒理作用,并进行安全评价。结果表明,高浓度乙酸铜会对银鲳幼鱼产生了较大的毒性,48 h和96 h-LC_(50)分别为0.898 mg·L~(-1)、0.264 mg·L~(-1),安全质量浓度为0.026 mg·L~(-1);不同浓度乙酸铜胁迫下银鲳幼鱼组织中的SOD、CAT、GSH-PX和GST活性均表现为低浓度被诱导而高浓度受抑制的规律,与乙酸铜浓度呈抛物线型剂量效应关系,此外,肝脏中4种抗氧化酶活性普遍高于鳃组织。研究发现,乙酸铜胁迫对抗氧化酶的影响,可以反映银鲳幼鱼机体的受损状况,其中SOD可较灵敏地指示早期低浓度的铜污染。  相似文献

Genetic variability and structuring of rabbitfish populations with contrasting life histories, Siganus argenteus and Siganus fuscescens were determined using allozyme analysis. A total of 13–14 polymorphic loci were examined from samples collected in 2002 and 2003 from eight reefs representing 25 populations north (Kuroshio Current) and south (Mindanao Current) of the bifurcation of the North Equatorial Current along the eastern Philippine coast. S. fuscescens populations (H OBS = 0.085) showed higher heterozygosity than S. argenteus (H OBS = 0.053), consistent with predictions of the neutral theory for demersal egg spawners compared to pelagic egg spawners. The generally lower genetic variability of Kuroshio populations may be due to greater environmental disturbance affecting larval mortality and recruitment success. There was no significant overall population genetic structuring for S. argenteus (F ST = 0.01485, P > 0.05) compared to S. fuscescens (F ST = 0.03275, P < 0.05). The latter species showed highly significant genetic structuring among Kuroshio and Mindanao Current populations in both 2002 and 2003 (F CT = 0.08120, P < 0.05; F CT = 0.07500, P < 0.05, respectively), as well as among populations within regions. This conforms to expectations of correlations between observed population genetic structure and life history features related to dispersal potential and gene flow. However, there were significant temporal (i.e., 2002 vs. 2003 samples) genetic variations for both S. fuscescens (F CT = 0.08542, P < 0.05) and S. argenteus (F CT = 0.06330, P < 0.05), which may reflect interannual variability in recruitment success. Differences in population spatial genetic patterns between the two reef fish species suggest that broad scale physical factors (e.g. NEC bifurcation) and regional environmental perturbations (e.g. incidence of typhoons) affect population genetic structure of sympatric congeneric species with different life histories differently. Finer scale ecological processes, which affect larval dispersal and recruitment (e.g., local hydrographic features, distribution of habitats), particularly in the Mindanao Current region, exert more influence on structuring populations of S. fuscescens.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption studies were undertaken with 3 mullet species to determine b, the exponent of w, as well as a, as indices of metabolic rate in the equation M=aw bwhere M=metabolic rate, a=the intensity of metabolism, W=body weight, and b=the exponent of w. This was done under 5 experimental temperatures (13°, 18°, 23°, 28°, 33°C) for Mugil cephalus and Liza dumerili at 1 and at 35 S, and for L. richardsoni at 35S only. Mean b values were approximately 0.85. The a values depended on temperature, and increased according to Van't Hoff's law except for L. dumerili (1 S) and L. richardsoni (35 S) for a temperature increase from 23° to 28°C. It was found that handling had a profound influence on metabolic rate and led to considerably increased consumption rates during the first 8 h after introduction into the respiration chambers. Fasting in L. dumerili resulted in a total drop of 27% in oxygen consumption over a period of 6 days, of which 10% occurred over the first 24 h. Oxygen consumption displayed diurnal rhythms during the 6 day period, with lowest consumption rates at midday and midnight and highest just after sunrise and sunset.  相似文献

Adult male Uca rapax, collected from the central coast of Venezuela in early 1994 were gradually acclimated to salinities ranging from 1.7 to 139S. The hemolymph osmolality (791±15 mOsmol in crabs from 26S) changed less than three-fold over the entire range of concentrations tested. The urine was isosmotic with the hemolymph in crabs exposed to dilutions <26S, and significantly hyperosmotic in those exposed to media >34.8S. The hemolymph levels of Na+, Cl, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ (320±13, 405±17, 7.8±0.7, 7.2±0.1 and 31±2.2 mmol l–1, respectively, in crabs acclimated to 26S) were maintained fairly constant over the range from 8.7 to 99S, decreasing by 15% in the more dilute media or increasing sharply to about twice those values in crabs from 139S. The excretory organs contributed to the osmoionic regulation of the hemolymph in crabs exposed to <3.5 or to >34.8S, by means of the partial reabsorption or excretion, respectively, of salts from or into the urine. The results described place U. rapax among the most powerful hypo/hyper-regulating crustaceans known.  相似文献

Sodium and chloride concentrations of the haemolymph were determined in Sphaeroma rugicauda Leach and S. serratum Fabricius acclimatized to a range of salinities. Sodium loss and uptake (using 22Na) were measured in salinities below 1.1 for S. rugicauda and 7.2 for S. serratum. Potential differences between haemolymph and medium indicate active uptake of both ions in certain salinities. The active-uptake component of total sodium-influx was found to be related non-linearly to the sodium concentration of the medium. Curves of were fitted to the activeuptake data. Km values indicate that, in S. rugicauda, the sodium uptake system has a greater affinity for sodium than in S. serratum. These findings are discussed in relation to the distribution of each species.  相似文献

The value of adenylate energy charge as a biological indicator of the severity of departure from normal environmental conditions was examined in the gastropod Pyrazus ebeninus (Bruguière, 1792) and the bivalves Anadara trapezia (Deshayes, 1840) and Saccostrea commercialis (Iredale and Roughley, 1933). Mean energy charge for each species decreased by 17% or more when salinity was reduced from 35 to 10. Changes with reduced salinity were also found in the concentrations of individual adenylates and several adenylate ratios other than energy charge. Energy charge was calculated from the relative concentrations of adenosine 5-tri-, di- and monophosphate (ATP, ADP, AMP) in the columellar muscle of P. ebeninus and in the adductor muscle of A. trapezia and S. commercialis. Mean energy charge values for individuals in the low-salinity condition (10) were 0.61 for P. ebeninus, 0. 69 for A. trapezia and 0.53 for S. commercialis, compared with mean energy charge values in the control individuals (35 S) of 0.85 to 0.87 for P. ebeninus, 0.84 to 0.85 for A. trapezia and 0.64 to 0.76 for S. commercialis. The decrease in energy charge occurred within 24 h; no further change was found with exposure to low salinity for 48 h (A. trapezia) or no further change was found with exposure to low salinity for 48 h (A. trapezia) or 20 h (P. ebeninus, S. commercialis). Total adenylate concentrations (ATP+ADP+AMP) differed between the three species, with mean values (kg-1 wet weight) of 5.0 mmol in P. ebeninus, 3.4 mmol in A. trapezia and 3.0 mmol in S. commercialis. No trends with time were found in total adenylate concentrations in any species. The changes in energy charge that occurred were not consistent with the differing sensitivity of the three species to reduced salinity, and do not support the use of energy charge as an absolute measure of stress in molluscs generally.  相似文献

The bathymetric distribution of chaetognath fauna observed at planktonic stations in the South Eastern Pacific Ocean during three different expeditions, is presented quantitatively. The material from the cruises IFOP-01 (October–December, 1964) and IFOP-04 (November–December, 1965) was collected by vertical closing net, at regular intervals, from 2000 and 1000 m depth, respectively; the R.V. A. Bruun Cruise 13 data include vertical samples at usual depth intervals from 3000 m (see Table 12), Isaac-Kidd Midwater Trawl (IKMT) and surface collections. They allowed us to identify, for the first time, the meso and bathypelagic species of this region and to extend the longitudinal distribution of the epipelagic species, which had been previously limited to the coastal areas. Among the epiplanktonic species, it was shown that two, Sagitta serratodentata and S. bipunctata, do not penetrate into the Peru Coastal Current region, where the endemic S. bierri is to be found extending westwards to the west boundary of the Peru Coastal Current, and that both mesopelagic species, previously reported for the epipelagic level of this area, S. decipiens and Eukrohnia hamata, inhabit the upper mesopelagic level in the oceanic region, but also rise to the epipelagic level near the coast, where upwellings do occur. The lower mesopelagic levels (500 to 1000 m) are occupied by E. fowleri and S. macrocephala, this latter species being reported for the first time in the South Eastern Pacific Ocean. The other mesopelagic species, S. zetesios and S. bathypelagica, also found for the first time in this region, were not found in large enough numbers to obtain a correct view of their stratification. Eukrohnia bathyantarctica, described for the Southern Ocean and previously reported only in the bathypelagic levels of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, was found at only bathypelagic levels. The combined effects of temperature, salinity and nutrition on survival and growth of larvae of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas were studied over a period of 7 d in the laboratory. Ripe adults, collected in spring and summer 1987 from natural populations in the Bay of Arcachon, France, were induced to spawn. Larvae of both species were cultured at four temperatures (15°, 20°, 25° and 30°C), four salinities (20, 25, 30 and 35S) per temperature, and two levels of nutrition (fed and unfed) per temperature/salinity combination. The fed larvae received a mixed algal diet of 50 cells each of Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans forma pumilum per microlitre. In both bivalve species, larvae survived over a wide range of temperature and salinity, with the exception of mussel larvae, which died at 30°C. Statistical analysis indicated that nutrition had the greatest effect on larval development, explaining 64 to 75% of the variance in growth of M. galloprovincialis and 54 to 70% in growth of Crassostrea gigas. Unfed mussel larvae displayed little growth. Compared with temperature, the effect of salinity was very slight. M. galloprovincialis larvae exhibited best growth at 20°C and 35S and C. gigas at 30°C and 30S.  相似文献

Benthic foraminifers collected in the marine littoral zone (sensu lato) of Argentina, Uruguay and Southern Brazil have been studied and compared with the Foraminifera collections from the same area studied previously. Two figures have been prepared, which show the geographical range and relative abundance of the most important species (cosmopolitan and non-cosmopolitan). The following biogeographical conclusions were drawn on the basis of an analysis of these figures. The whole area, from a latitude of about 32° S up to the southern coast of Tierra del Fuego, should be considered as one biogeographical unit (a kingdom of Buccella peruviana, sensu lato). This unit has 2 internal boundaries, which are located approximately at latitudes 41° and 52° S. They divide the whole area into 3 sub-areas which can be called (from North to South): North Patagonian (32° to 41° S), South Patagonian (41° to 52° S) and Malvinian (52° S—southern coast of Tierra del Fuego). With the exception of Buccella peruviana, sensu lato, which is typical of all 3 sub-areas, these sub-areas are characterized by the following faunal features. The North Patagonian sub-area contains abundant numbers of Elphidium discoidale. The South Patagonian sub-area is characterized by abundant numbers of Elphidium macellum. The Malvinian sub-area contains abundant numbers of Elphidium macellum, and also several very typical representatives of the Malvin current water, for instance, Cassidulina crassa, sensu stricto, Angulogerina angulosa, Uvigerina bifurcata, Cassidulinoides parkerianus, Ehrenbergina pupa and others. It is a matter of opinion whether the sub-areas cited be considered biogeographical sub-provinces, or even smaller units. Sillago burrus and S. vittata both use sheltered, nearshore shallow waters ( 1.5 m) as nursery areas. However, the juveniles of the former species remain there for only a few months, before migrating into deeper waters (5 to 15 m) as they increase in size, whereas some juvenile S. vittata do not undergo a similar migration until considerably later. S. burrus rarely exceeded 2 yr of age and was never found beyond 4 yr of age. Although only a small number of S. vittata exceeded 2 yr of age, a few individuals of this species were caught between 4 and 7 yr old. The maximum and asymptotic lengths of S. burrus (251 and 180 mm, respectively) were far lower than those of S. vittata (325 and 320 mm, respectively), whereas the growth coefficients (K) were much higher for the former species, i.e. 2.4 vs 0.4. Virtually all S. burrus, and also those S. vittata that moved into deeper waters early in life, spawned at the end of their first year of life. Since relatively few S. burrus reached 2 yr of age, the attainment of almost full size by the end of their first year of life enables a relatively large number of eggs to be produced by fish at the end of their first year-for many, their only spawning period. Those individuals of S. vittata that remained in their shallow nursery areas until the end of their first year of life, did not reach maturity until the end of their second year of life. The proportions of mature gonads and the numbers of yolk-vesicle and yolk-granule oocytes and post-ovulatory follicles in ovaries were far higher in both S. burrus and S. vittata during December to February than in any other month, demonstrating that these two species spawn largely in these summer months. During this period, the ovaries of individual S. burrus and S. vittata often contained post-ovulatory follicles, as well as yolkvesicle and yolk-granule oocytes that ranged widely in size, strongly suggesting that both species are multiple spawners. During the spawning period of S. burrus, the ovaries possessed large numbers of hydrated oocytes and no post-ovulatory follicles or the reverse situation, and the oocytes tended to form several relatively discrete size groups. This indicates that S. burrus produces eggs in batches and that the spawning of the members of this species is synchronised. The presence of large numbers of yolk-granule oocytes with migrating nuclei in the ovaries of many S. vittata at certain times suggests that this species is also a batch- and synchronised spawner. Comparisons between the results of the present study and past work emphasise that the relationships between the timing of offshore movements and the sizes and ages at first maturity vary considerably amongst whiting species.  相似文献

For valine uptake by the polychaete Nereis virens Sars, the kinetic constants were: V max=355 nmol g-1 fresh weight h-1, K m=20 M. Leucine and some other amino acids acted as partial inhibitors of valine uptake. Valine uptake rate was 78% higher at 21.5 S than at 14 S. The major portion of valine absorbed by the polychaete could be extracted as free valine, with 6.5 to 15.6% being respired, and 3.6 to 9.5% incorporated into proteins. Calculations indicate that 7 to 12% of the metabolism of N. virens may be sustained by uptake of glycine and aspartic acid from natural concentrations. It is suggested that uptake of amino acids by this worm is important in the nitrogen cycling of marine sediments.  相似文献

The ostracod fauna of Baltic brackish-water rockpools is made up of two groups: permanent members of the pools, and occasional guests from the littoral zone. The former group consists of Heterocypris salinus, H. incongruens and Cypridopsis aculeata. These species are characterized by rapid development (which starts when the water temperature approaches 15°C), a short life span, and 2 or 3 separate generations during the summer and autumn. The number of generations is determined by water temperature. Hibernation always takes place as eggs. Hatching and development during the late spring or early summer has been found to be mostly simultaneous. The spawning of the 3 species always starts epidemically. Reproduction is entirely parthenogenetic in the investigated area. Under natural conditions, C. aculeata may be found with either H. salinus or H. incongruens, but these two latter species have never been recorded together. H. incongruens is less tolerant to high salinities than the other 2 species and, even after successive adaptation, it does not resist salinities higher than 16. H. salinus has been found in 35.2 S in the field, and has been kept in 30 S in the laboratory after successive adaptation. The optimum salinity-temperature range for this species is 5 to 10 S and 15°C, when both survival and development are considered. Corresponding figures for C. aculeata are 0.5 to 20 S and 15°C, although this species, like H. salinus, survives longest at 5°C. The very rapid development, parthenogenetic reproduction and short life span of these species must be considered as favourable adaptations to the variable and unstable environment of the rockpool ecosystems.  相似文献

A salinity dependent mictic response was observed in a clone of Brachionus plicatilis cultured in the 2 to 4 salinity range. This response was related to asexual exponential reproduction rates (G) and could be divided into three categories: (a) no mixis occurred at a salinity of 35 S and above, where G values were lower than 0.30 d-1, (b) low mictic levels in rotifers cultured at 2 and 30 S, where G values ranged between 0.40 to 0.50 d-1, and (c) high mictic levels in rotifers cultured at salinities ranging between 4 and 20 S, where G values ranged between 0.50 to 0.85 d-1. Fluctuations in mictic levels varied with time during the course of the experiments. Results suggest that salinity conditions leading to optimal parthenogenic reproduction also support mixis.  相似文献

Crassostrea virginica Gmelin were subjected to simulated tidal fluctuations of salinity, and the subsequent effects on osmotic and ionic composition of the pericardial fluid, body water and valve movements were investigated. Ambient salinity fluctuation patterns of 20-10-20, 15-10-15 and 10-5-10 were simulated during 24.8-h periods. An additional 10-5-10 S experiment was performed using a dilution water approximating the ionic composition of Mississippi River water with regard to Mg++, Ca++ and SO 4 = , instead of deionized water. Finally the effects of a 2-week diurnal fluctuation pattern between 20 and 10 S were investigated with respect to pericardial fluid composition. Pericardial fluid osmolality, concentrations of Cl-, Na+, Mg++, K+, Ca++ and ninhydrin-positive substances (NPS) were analyzed periodically throughout all experiments. Pericardial fluid osmolality was slightly hyperosmotic as ambient water salinity decreased during a cycle, and then became slightly hyposmotic as ambient salinity increased. In the 2-week experiment, pericardial fluid osmolality tracked ambient seawater closely through Day 5, but became more intermediate between high and low seawater values as the experiment progressed. Similar patterns during fluctuations of salinity were observed for Na+, Cl-, Mg++ and Ca++. Pericardial fluid K+ levels did not track ambient seawater as closely as did other ions. The ionic composition of dilution water had little effect on the osmotic or ionic response of the oyster's pericardial fluid. Pericardial fluid NPS level varied inversely with salinity during the 20-10-20 cycle. During the longterm fluctuation experiment, NPS values gradually decreased over the 2-week period compared to constant salinity control values. Percent body water also varied inversely with ambient salinity. Solute movement accounted for most of the change in pericardial fluid osmolality during the simulated cycles with water movement responsible for 1 to 11%. Water movement contributed more to the change of pericardial fluid osmolality during the decreasing salinity phase than the increasing phase of a given cycle. During 20-10-20 S cycles, oyster valves remained open 56% of the time (n=23). In contrast, when salinity was abruptly changed from 20 to 10 within 5 min, valve closure occurred in 4.8±0.3 min (n=20). In April–May 1984 mesoplankton vertical distribution in the Black Sea was studied by sampling with a 150-l waterbottle, vertical plankton nets with mesh-sizes of 180 and 500 mkm and by direct counting of the jelly-fish Aurelia aurita, the ctenophore Pleurobrachia pileus, Calanus helgolandicus and the chaetognath Sagitta setosa from the manned submersible Argus. During daytime throughout the whole deep-water body of the sea near the lower oxycline boundary, plankton forms a layer of high concentration (from 2.5 to 38 g m-3); its thickness varies from 5 to 10–20 m and it has an unchangeable vertical structure; its upper portion is formed by the ctenophore P. pileus, its middle portion by V–VI copepodites of C. helgolandicus, and its lower portion by the population of S. setosa. The lower boundary of this layer coincides with 0.4 to 0.5 ml O2 l-1 isooxygen surface, and the depth of its location varies in different areas of the sea from 150 to 50 m, depending on the depth location of 0.5 ml O2 l-1 isooxygen surface. By night the animals, which form this layer, migrate towards the surface.  相似文献

The foraging behavior of the bucktooth parrotfish Sparisoma radians was studied in seagrass beds off St. Croix, US Virgin Islands and in laboratory preference tests. Thalassia testudinum was the dominant item in the field diet with the epiphytized distal portion of the blades most favored. Other seagrasses, Syringodium filiforme and Halodule wrightii, were taken in relation to their abundance. Several algae were also eaten, particularly Halimeda spp. and Penicillus spp. Although abundances of the algae varied, the fish maintained a steady mixture of plant species in their diet. Laboratory feeding tests for various plants presented in pairs showed clear preferences in nearly all cases. The preference hierarchy was (1) T. testudinum with epiphytes, (2) H. wrightii, (3) T. testudinum without epiphytes, (4) S. filiforme, and the algae, (5) Dictyota divaricata, (6) Enteromorpha flexuosa, (7) Caulerpa mexicana, (8) Halimeda incrassata and (9) Penicillis pyriformis. Preference did not vary significantly with satiation. The catch per unit effort (kilocalories absorbed per bite) was calculated for each plant, using (a) absorption values calculated for S. radians fed the different plants, (b) the calorific values for tested plants, and (c) an estimate of the amount of material taken per bite. The ranking of catch per unit effort closely paralleled the preference hierarchy with the exception of C. mexicana which has a toxin. Fish fed diets of single plants, mixed plant diet, and starved controls showed differential survival which paralleled the preference hierarchy, the most preferred plants leading to longest survival. Comparison of laboratory results with field feeding behavior shows that inclusion of plants in the diet is not related directly to preference rank, availability or survival value, but that the fish deliberately eat a variety of plants presumably which maintains balanced diet. This result indicates that models of optimal foraging for herbivores should include nutrient constraints and avoidance of toxins in order to predict accurately the behavior of an animal in the field.  相似文献
