Three species of intertidal tropical chitons observed between 1984 and 1986, exhibit different movement patterns:Acanthopleura gemmata (Indian and Pacific Ocean) is a strict homer;A. granulata (Caribbean Sea) is mostly a ranger but sometimes shows homing behaviour;A. brevispinosa (Western Indian Ocean) alternates homing and ranging for different excursions. The three species have been studied in the field using a motographic technique to assess the importance of intra-individual trail following in homing. The fraction of the path which overlaps with earlier segments of an individual's trail is different in the three species: when returning from feeding groundsA. gemmata follows almost the whole of the outgoing path; inA. granulata the path coincidence is minimal, whileA. brevispinosa shows intermediate trail following values. InA. gemmata andA. brevispinosa trail overlap rises rapidly just after feeding, and trail following is mostly backward along the outgoing path. On the other hand,A. granulata shows a linear increase in trail coincidence with increasing path covered and the proportion of forward trail following is relatively higher. Nevertheless, all specimens of the three species which show a high homing performance invariably show a large trail following also. These findings confirm that, despite the interspecific difference in ecology and the related variation in spatial organization of foraging excursions, trail following is the basic mechanism for homing in intertidal chitons.  相似文献

The Indo-Pacific, intertidal chiton Acanthopleura gemmata (Blainville) is a central place forager which occupies definite, actively dug and defended scars, and migrates during nocturnal low tides up to 3 m away to feed on algal grounds. After each feeding excursion, most chitons home precisely to their scars. Photographic tracking, using lightemitting diodes (LED) glued to the chitons, and experiments were conducted throughout 45 d (August to September 1984) along the Nimu Peninsula (Somalia) in order to elucidate the importance of trail following in the homing and feeding of this species. LED tracking of the chitons throughout each activity phase and trail interruption experiments showed that following the personal outgoing trail is a basic homing mechanism in this species. Translocation of the chitons on a conspecific trail and homing performance analysis revealed that the trail-associated information involved in the homing is polymorphic in the population, thus minimizing the probability of following a conspecific trail despite the frequent trail crossings due to high population density. The LED tracking throughout successive activity phases showed a high coincidence between the paths traced by the same chiton night after night. In the few cases when the outgoing and return paths of the first night markedly diverge, the home-feeding ground route of the successive night overlaps the return trail of the previous night. A less pronounced inter-individual trail following also occurs during foodward excursions. These findings suggest that the trails released by A. gemmata are complex, including both quasi-individual and species-specific information. Moreover, this chiton may utilize its trail following capacity not only to home, but also for the retrieval of the feeding grounds night after night.  相似文献

The vertical zonation of the three common rocky shore neritids at Mkomani, Mombasa, Kenya, Nerita plicata Linnaeus, N. undata Linnaeus, and N. textilis Dillwyn, as a function of feeding migrations and of size, was studied from 28 February to 24 March 1983. These snails perform feeding migrations at night starting at around mid-ebb tide and return to their resting positions with the flood tide. They remain in their resting positions throughout the day until the next nocturnal ebb tide. The direction of migration is sizerelated, with the larger snails of each species moving in the opposite vertical direction to the smaller ones, so that the populations as a whole exhibit no statistically significant net vertical displacement. The larger individuals of two of the species, N. plicata and N. undata, invariably move downwards to their feeding levels, while the smaller individuals move upwards; the larger individuals of N. textilis display a different pattern of migration, moving downwards on and around spring-tide days and upwards on and around neap tide days, while the smaller individuals move in the opposite directions. N. textilis rest above their feeding level around spring tides, and below that level around neap tides. It is demonstrated how these nocturnal migratory feeding rhythms are integrated into the spring-neap and seasonal cycles of the snails' daytime resting positions. The adaptive significance of these migrations is also discussed.  相似文献

Searlesia dira Reeve is a locally abundant, carnivorous gastropod that occurs from Alaska to central California. I studied populations of this snail at a variety of sites on San Juan Island in order to provide information on their distribution and abundance and to analyze their community role, i.e., their potential impact on their prey populations and their dietary overlap with co-occurring invertebrate predators. I established permanent transects, both random and in crevices, at three areas of differing exposure to wave action. On these transects I recorded the number and size ofS. dira, activity, distance to nearest neighbor, other organisms present, and tidal height on four phases of the mixed semi-diurnal tidal cycle. The results are (1) an increase in density with increase in substrate relief, (2) an occurrence of highest densities in moderately exposed and exposed sites rather than in protected ones, (3) an increase in mean size with increase in depth along the intertidal gradient, (4) an increase in both total activity and feeding success on the high water immediately following an extreme minus low tide occurring during the daytime in the summer, (5) a relative restriction of feeding success to that high tide, and (6) a similarity of the diet to the relative abundance of the main observed prey for most areas. The main exceptions are chitons and one lower intertidal limpet, all of which are taken in excess of their apparent abundance and especially in the middle intertidal. The upward extension of some lower intertidal prey populations, such as chitons, may be limited by the increased susceptibility of individuals at the upper margin of the population to predators such asS. dira; susceptibility appears to be increased after periods with a higher probability of increased physiological stress, such as extreme low tides on summer days.  相似文献

The behaviour of juvenile herring (Clupea harengus L.) feeding on Artemia sp. nauplii in both light and dark was recorded using an infra-red-sensitive television-recording technique. In the light, two modes of feeding were observed, particle biting and filtering, but in the dark only filtering was observed. Marked differences in swimming behaviour were seen between light and dark. In the light, the fish continued to school while feeding in both modes; in the dark, the school dispersed, the fish swam slower in tight circular paths and fed only by filtering. In the dark, filtering fish swam faster (0.11 m s-1) than non-filtering fish (0.07 m s-1). In the light, no difference in speed was measured between filtering and non-filtering fish (0.34 m s-1). Owing to the lower filtering speeds in the dark, the removal rate of nauplii from the water was much lower than in light, except in the highest prey concentrations. This suggests that if night-time filter-feeding takes place in the sea, it will be of importance only when exploiting dense patches of food.  相似文献

Hexaplex trunculus is one of the most widespread Mediterranean species of muricid gastropod and lives on rocky, sandy-mud and mud substrata. Although common in the Adriatic Sea, relatively little is known about its ecology especially feeding behaviour. The aim of this study was to explore the aspects of the feeding behaviour of H. trunculus using Arca noae, Modiolus barbatus and Mytilus galloprovincialis as experimental prey. Prey species preference, predator size, prey size choice, feeding rates, handling times and mode and place of attack were analysed. Typically, only M. galloprovincialis was attacked: A. noae rarely at the byssal gape and M. barbatus never. Small (40 mm) H. trunculus could not easily attack large M. galloprovincialis (65 mm) and preferred small (20 mm) and medium (35 mm) sized prey. Conversely, medium (55 mm) and large (70 mm) H. trunculus fed randomly on M. galloprovincialis of all three sizes. The feeding strategy adopted by H. trunculus individuals varied with respect to size. A tendency to drill the prey shell was recorded for small predators, whereas marginal chipping was adopted more frequently by large individuals. On average small, medium and large H. trunculus consumed 2.4±1.6 (range 0–4), 1.2±1.6 (range 0–4) and 2.0±2.1 (range 0–6) M. galloprovincialis, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in prey-handling time with respect to the method of access adopted, predator and prey sizes. The time required to access a M. galloprovincialis individual by marginal chipping was considerably less than that required for drilling. H. trunculus consumed an average of 0.60±0.80 g M. galloprovincialis tissue dry weight over a 5-week period, that is, ~40% of its own tissue body weight. This translates to an average-sized (55 mm shell height) H. trunculus consuming ~18 M. galloprovincialis of 50 mm shell length (minimum marketable size) per year. H. trunculus showed no preference to drill either the left or right valves of M. galloprovincialis but generally attacked the posterior shell margin.  相似文献

The effect of microalgal strength of adhesion to surfaces was examined with regard to their susceptibility to grazing by Gammarus oceanicus Segerstråle and Calliopius laeviusculus (Krøyer). Observations of the feeding behaviour and two feeding experiments were carried out under laboratory conditions. Naturally attached periphyton (strongly attached cells), homogenized periphyton (loosely attached cells), filtered phytoplankton (unattached cells) and bare surfaces (controls) were randomly located in a grid and offered for grazing to a fixed number of amphipods of each species separately. The number of individuals visiting each type of food presented in the grid was recorded for 24-h periods. The feeding habit of each species, their effect on food distribution and their efficiency at collecting small particles were also recorded. G. oceanicus has a low efficiency at collecting particles and does not select a particular type of food, owing to its feeding habit of indiscriminately resuspending loosely attached particles. C. laeviusculus is a highly efficient and selective grazer, preferring homogenized periphyton and phytoplankton to naturally attached periphyton. For epibenthic diatoms, strong adhesion to surfaces is advantageous to avoid grazers.  相似文献

Studies were carried out on the inner and outer coral reefs at Diani Beach on the Kenya coast to assess the distribution, density and behaviour of Echinometra mathaei (de Blainville). Transects 1 m wide were run on the two reefs in April, June and September, 1970. Test measurements on representative samples from the animal populations on both reefs were also taken. Direct observations on specimens of E. mathaci in selected rock pools on the outer reef were made to determine their movement, gregariousness, homing and feeding behaviour. Population density was higher on the inner reef furthest from the sea at low tide than on the outer reef. On the submerged inner coral reef at low tide, E. mathaei occurred mainly exposed on the seaweeds, but, on the exposed outer reef, its main niches were crevices in rock pools and under coral ledges. Sizefrequency distributions revealed that smaller individuals occurred on the inner reef and larger ones on the outer reef. The growth rate of E. mathaei was estimated from the positions of modal values, calculated from size-frequency distributions. No gregarious or homing behaviour was observed and, once settled in a suitable crevice, E. mathaei showed little movement.  相似文献

The effect of chemical stimuli on the feeding behaviour of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) and sole (Solea solea L.) larvae was investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. Laboratory-reared flatfish larvae exposed to chemical stimuli showed significant differences in the frequency of various behaviour patterns related to feeding (such as swimming, snapping and darting) compared to larvae exposed to blanks of filtrated seawater. The chemical substances Il-asparagine, glycine, inosine 5-monophosphate and betaine evoked the strongest behavioural responses in turbot larvae. In sole larvae the most potent substances were Il-phenylalanine, Il-lysine, Il-asparagine, inosine 5-monophosphate and betaine. These results show that feeding of turbot and sole larvae is influenced by chemosensory processes at an early larval stage, and indicate that chemoreception may be an integrated part of turbot and sole larvae feeding strategy.  相似文献

The Red Sea nudibranch Hexabranchus sanguineus, rare in this region, was found in the Gulf of Aqaba together with a pair of commensal shrimp, Periclimenes imperator. The behaviour of the shrimp, especially as regards their adaptation to the host, was studied in the field and in an aquarium. The shrimp live on the sea slug, feeding on particles adhering to its mucous surface; they move on it even when it is swimming. The shrimp's colour is well adapted to that of the host. The observed specimens never left a healthy host willingly; when, in aquarium experiments, various red substrates or mucous sea cucumbers were offered beside H. sanguineus, the shrimp always chose the nudibranch. However, dead or injured and motionless slugs were abandoned. Two days after the death of a nudibranch, its commensal shrimp accepted the brown synaptid Euapta godeffroyi as host; on a previous occasion, a shrimp was found living on this latier species in the reef. The adaptation of P. imperator to living on the temporarily free-swimming H. sanguineus apparently represents a special evolutionary stage compared with that of other members of this family, which are mostly commensal with sessile hosts. Only palaemonid cleaner-shrimps feed briefly from free-swimming substrates.

The feeding biology of the echinoid Tripneustes gratilla from a seagrass bed off Toliara, on the south-west coast of Madagascar, was investigated during the summer and winter seasons. Repletion indices of the gut of T. gratilla varied seasonally, in such a way that higher amounts of food occurred in the gut in winter than in other seasons. Conversely, a more detailed analysis of one summer and one winter sample of the gut tissue dry weights revealed higher weights in summer (February) than in winter (August). This was interpreted as a varying capability of nutrient storage and closely related to the feeding activity of the echinoid. This inverse relationship between feeding activity and nutrient storage was suggested to be dependent on gonadal growth. Indeed, higher food consumption was observed during the post-spawning period (August), that is, when most of the energy accumulated was used up for gonadal growth. Low feeding activity occurred when a sufficient amount of energy was accumulated in gut tissues (February), the time corresponding to the initiation of gonadal growth. Investigations on the feeding habits, using Ivlev's electivity index, revealed preferential feeding of T. gratilla on Syringodium isoetifolium, the dominant seagrass species found in the gut. This was partly related to the higher availability of that particular seagrass species in the field. However, its soft and terete leaf blade's morphology also makes it easier to manipulate and ingest. Studies on the feeding behaviour indicated the presence of a diel feeding cycle in T. gratilla individuals in both summer and winter seasons. Yet, its pattern varied between the two studied months (one summer and one winter) as the cycle was less contrasted during period of active feeding, i.e. in winter compared to summer. This study provides novel information on how intrinsic factors, such as physiological state, can govern the feeding activity of T. gratilla living in a seagrass habitat.  相似文献

Field observations on Nerita textilis Dillwyn inhabiting rocky cliffs at Sar Uanle (Southern Somalia) revealed that during the resting phase some of the snails are scattered on the upper cliff and some are clustered at lower levels. During feeding they all migrate downward, but to different extents. Maximum activity of both groups occurs during low water (LW) between midday and midnight. During spring tides (ST), the scattered snails reside higher up and make smaller feeding excursions than during neap tides (NT). During ST, some clustered snails join the belt of scattered individuals, while the trend reverses during NT. Between November 1982 and August 1984 diving observations of two intertidal limpets' defensive behaviours in response to two predatory species were made near the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory of Kyoto University, in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, for over 800 h. The focus of the observations was a simple isolated rock, 0.9 m2 in area with an inclination of 75°. The pulmonate homing limpet Siphonaria sirius responded by fleeing from its home in response to the whelk Thais clavigera and by calmping tightly to its home scar in response to the starfish Coscinasterias acutispina. Both behaviours were successful for avoiding predation. After a whelk moved far away, limpets returned to their homes. The patellid limpet Cellana toreuma showed mantle folding behaviour or fled for an average distance of 8 cm vertically upwards in response to the whelk and for an average distance of 21 cm vertically upwards in response to the starfish. The amount of time predators spent foraging increased in the low intertidal zone relative to the mid and high zones, and most predator attacks were observed during the limpets' resting periods (submersion in late afternoon or nighttime). The upward directional flight displayed by C. toreuma was related to the upward orientation of the limpets' heads when they are in a resting position. Half of the limpets observed fleeing downward away from a starfish, a movement elicited by a downward attack, received a second attack. These limpets were preyed upon at the second encounter 67% of the time. The upward fleeing behaviour of C. toreuma resulted in the shifting of its resting site higher up the study site where fewer attacks occurred and where the mortality rate was at its lowest. It is suggested that the homing behaviour of S. sirius and the upward fleeing behaviour of C. toreuma are mechanisms by means of which interspecific competition between limpets is reduced and coexistence on a small rock surface is maintained.  相似文献

The anti-predator behaviour of Baltic crustacean planktivores was studied in feeding experiments under predation pressure of herring. The experiments were conducted with pelagic mysids: Mysis mixta and Mysis relicta, and with Cercopagis pengoi, a non-indigenous cladoceran, which invaded the Baltic Sea in 1992. Zooplankton was offered as prey. Two kinds of experiments were performed in the absence and presence of chemical predator cues: (1) two-prey experiments with prey, which have poor or good escape responses and all three planktivores and (2) natural prey experiments with mysids in natural zooplankton assemblages. The results showed that all three species reacted to the chemical cue of herring by decreasing their feeding rate and altering prey selection. C. pengoi selected easily captured prey (rotifers) in two-prey experiments under predation risk while selection for any prey was evident in mysids in natural prey experiments only in the absence of predator cues. This indicates that planktivores have different anti-predator strategies, which are modified by their own prey capture abilities. C. pengoi was a very efficient predator on small prey with size-specific prey consumption rate 5 to 18 times the rate of mysids. Results show that the studied planktivores are capable of adjusting their feeding behaviour to decrease their conspicuousness in order to increase survival under predation risk. Further, results support the view that C. pengoi has adapted well to the Baltic ecosystem, sharing food niche with pelagic mysids and most probably having a strong influence on the whole pelagic food web.  相似文献

When feeding on blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus) either stab into the mollusc’s gaping valves or hammer through its dorsal or ventral shell. Whilst the selectivity of hammering and stabbing oystercatchers for specific prey morphologies has been well studied, the way in which the effects of environment on M. edulis morphology can in turn affect feeding methods of H. ostralegus is very poorly understood. Based on morphological analyses on randomly selected shells from three intertidal zones, this study failed to detect differences in morphology or distribution of dorsally and ventrally hammered shells but confirms the finding of previous authors that hammering oystercatchers select thinner mussels than stabbing birds. Additionally, we show that this difference in optimal prey morphology can lead to spatial patterns in oystercatcher feeding behaviour. Whilst at the low intertidal and higher mid intertidal zones, characterised by comparatively thick shells, most empty shells had apparently been stabbed, hammering was the dominant feeding behaviour at the lower mid intertidal zone, where shells were thinner. Preference of hammering birds for smaller mussels was not ubiquitous. Sagittal shell shape was predominantly influenced by allometric growth effects and had only minor effect on prey selection. All oystercatchers preferred less inflated mussels, with the degree of shell inflation gradually increasing with higher intertidal elevation. Our results illustrate the importance of small-scale patterns in prey ecophenotypes in determining the distribution and feeding dynamics of wading birds.  相似文献

Summary This study compares time budgets of males and females of two sympatric species of bee flies, Lordotus pulchrissimus and L. miscellus. These species occur synchronously in sand dune habitat on the north shore of Mono Lake, Mono Co., California, and feed almost exclusively on the flowers of a composite shrub, Chrysothamnus nauseosus. The two closely related species, with similar ecological requirements and in an identical environment, allocate time and energy in very different ways, even when accomplishing the same ecological goals. L. pulchrissimus males and females engage respectively in aggressive interactions and feeding primarily in the morning. In contrast, L. miscellus males and females intersperse brief periods of resting with flying when defending territories and feeding, and they keep up these activities until later in the day. Similarly within species, males are involved in aggressive interactions for a shorter period each day, and females feed over a longer period. Flies in all sex-species classes but male pulchrissimus allocate their time energetically in similar ways. Male pulchrissimus spend more time each day in energetically costly activities; they engage in continuous hovering flight and intense interactions in aerial aggregations. While male miscellus feed little, male pulchrissimus spend a large portion of their time feeding, approximately as much as females, contrary to the expectation that males should be foraging-time minimizers. This study corroborates the conclusions of previous studies on bee-fly communities by showing that nectar and pollen are important resources for adult bee flies, at least for some species: Individuals of these two species spend a large proportion of their adult lifetimes feeding.  相似文献

This paper reports on the feeding biology of a predatory and of a facultatively predatory nematode, Enoploides longispiculosus and Adoncholaimus fuscus, respectively. Both species represent genera which are common and abundant in the littoral of the North Sea and in adjacent estuaries. Observations on the foraging behaviour of both species are given, and for the former species, a range of prey from its natural habitat is identified. Respiration was determined using a polarographic oxygen electrode technique and compared to consumption determined as predation rates on the monhysterid nematode Diplolaimelloides meyli. The daily C-loss due to respiration accounted for 15% of the measured C-consumption in E. longispiculosus and for 111% in A. fuscus, proving the observed feeding rates in the latter species to have been inadequate for the maintenance of its aerobic metabolism. Daily respiration rates at an average environmental temperature were 219 ng C ind−1 d−1 for adults of A. fuscus and 21.9 ng C ind−1 d−1 for adults of E. longispiculosus. Using radiotracer techniques, no uptake of bacterial cells or of organic matter in the dissolved phase was demonstrated for E. longispiculosus. In A. fuscus, however, a significant drinking of label in the dissolved or volatile fraction occurred; bacterial cells were taken up at a level insignificant to the nematode's daily C-ration. It is concluded that E. longispiculosus has a fairly strict predatory feeding strategy, while A. fuscus gains a majority of C from additional foraging strategies, among which the uptake of dissolved material and scavenging on macrofauna carcasses (as reported in the literature) may be of particular importance. Summary Juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) spend the first year of their lives in their natal streams, where they may often hold feeding territories. They also face significant risk of predation by birds and fish, and should alter their behaviour to reduce risk of mortality when these predators are present. Although there is laboratory evidence that coho react to predator visual stimuli, chemoreception of avian predator presence has not previously been reported. We tested the influence of chemical stimuli of common merganser (Mergus merganser), preying on juvenile coho, on two aspects of coho territorial behaviour, foraging and aggression, in flow-through aquaria. After a mixture of merganser- and coho-conditioned water was introduced into the system, juvenile coho significantly reduced their attack distance on drifting prey. The fish also significantly decreased their aggressive behaviour directed towards mirrors (total number of acts, intensity of acts and time spent) when the same odour was present. They did not change their behaviour in either experiment after control introductions of water treated with fish alone. These results are interpreted within the framework of a trade-off between juvenile growth and mortality.  相似文献

Increasing dietary specialization is an inherently risky strategy because it increases a species’ vulnerability to resource depletion. However, risks associated with dietary specialization may be offset by increased performance when feeding on preferred prey. Although rarely demonstrated, highly specialized species are expected to outperform generalists when feeding on their preferred prey, whereas generalists are predicted to have more similar performance across a range of different prey. To test this theory, we compared the growth rates of two obligate coral-feeding butterflyfishes (Chaetodon trifascialis and Chaetodon plebeius) maintained on exclusive diets of preferred vs nonpreferred prey. In the field, C. trifascialis was the most specialized species, feeding almost exclusively on just one coral species, Acropora hyacinthus. C. plebeius meanwhile, was much less specialized, but fed predominantly on Pocillopora damicornis. During growth experiments, C. trifascialis grew fastest when feeding on A. hyacinthus and did not grow at all when feeding on less preferred prey (P. damicornis and Porites cylindrica). C. plebeius performed equally well on both A. hyacinthus and P. damicornis (its preferred prey), but performed poorly when feeding on P. cylindrica. Both butterflyfishes select coral species that maximize juvenile growth, but contrary to expectations, the more specialized species (C. trifascialis) did not outperform the generalist species (C. plebeius) when both consumed their preferred prey. Increased dietary specialization, therefore, appears to be a questionable strategy, as there was no evidence of any increased benefits to offset increases in susceptibility to disturbance.  相似文献

Summary Laboratory studies on colonies of Bombus terrestris (L.) and B. terricola Kby. showed that while the overall rate of larval feeding is highly correlated with total larval biomass, feeding of individual larvae is only weakly regulated. Nevertheless, the temporal distributions of inspections and feedings to larvae by adult nurse bees did provide evidence for a feedback mechanism.The behavior of individual workers engaged in larval feeding is highly contagious through time. A laboratory colony of B. terrestris compensated for the effect of experimental removal of half the worker population by increases in the feeding rate of individual workers. The results appear to be consistent with recent suggestions that overall colony performance is a mass effect resulting from the partially stochastic operations of its individual components.  相似文献
