The larvae of Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius) have been reared in the laboratory, from hatching to megalopa stage, at 35 S, 25°C. The five zoeal stages and the megalopa are described, including functional appendages of each stage. On the basis of morphological characteristics, the first zoeal and megalopa stages of O. quadrata can be distinguished from similar stages of closely related Ocypodinae. At 25°C, the megalopa appeared in a minimum of 34 days following hatching.  相似文献

Larvae of Pleuroncodes monodon (Milne-Edwards, 1837), a red crab of commercial importance in South America, were reared in the laboratory at 2 different temperatures (15° and 20°C), from hatching up to the last larval stage. The 5 typical stages, with their corresponding functional appendages, are described and figured. The main characteristics useful in differentiating larvae of P. monodon from those of the other Chilean species of Galatheidae and its northern congener P. planipes are discussed. Data on duration of each larval stage, length of moulting intervals and mortality at the 2 test temperatures are also given. This study was financially supported by the Chilean Ministry of Agriculture and by the National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT).  相似文献

Larvae of Pisoides edwardsi (Bell, 1835) have been reared in the laboratory at 2 different temperatures (13.8° and 18.5°C), from hatching to megalops stage. The two zoeal stages and the megalops, as well as the setation of the functional appendages are described and illustrated. The main characteristics useful to differentiate the larvae of P. edwardsi from those of Libidoclaea granaria, the other Chilean species belonging to the same sub-family, are discussed. Data on duration of zoeal development, length of moulting intervals, and mortality at the 2 test temperatures, are also given. This study was financially supported, in part, by the Chilean Ministry of Agriculture.  相似文献

The larval development of Clibanarius albidigitus Nobili is described and illustrated from laboratory-reared specimens. At 30°C, this species passes through four zoeal stages before molting to the megalopa. Of the 120 individual larvae reared, survival was high, with 88% reaching the megalopal stage. Zoeal stage durations varied from 3 to 18 d. Rearing was terminated after 45 d, and at that time no megalopae had molted to the firstcrab stage. Among known larvae of Clibanarius species, C. albidigitus is immediately distinguished by the presence of dorsomedial and dorsolateral carapace keels.  相似文献

Larvae of the xanthid crab Pilumnoides perlatus (Poeppig, 1836) have been reared in the laboratory at 3 different temperatures (10.2°, 15° and 20°C) from hatching to megalopa stage. The 5 zoea stages and the megalopa, as well as the setation of the functional appendages are described and illustrated. The main characteristics useful to differentiate the larval stages of P. perlatus from those of Homalaspis plana, the other Chilean species of the same family so far reared, are discussed. Data on duration of zoea development, length of moulting intervals, and mortality at the 3 test temperatures are also given. This study was partially supported by the Chilean National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT).  相似文献

Mature female stages of Tanais cavolinii Milne Edwards are described according to degree of oostegite development. Sexual dimorphism of the chelipeds of copulatory males is explained functionally. An aberrant marsupium consisting of two closed ovisacs with a small slit for sperm transfer protects the brood from sudden unpredictable changes in salinity. Behavioural traits, courtship, copulation, and parental care are described and compared to those of Heterotanais oerstedi Kröyer. The different habitats selected by the two species are reflected by several adaptations in their morphology and behaviour as tube dwellers. A phenomenon unique among invertebrates is that the female T. cavolinii supplies additional yolk to the larvae just before their release. The production and timing of this food supply is described and its adaptive significance is discussed.  相似文献

The larval stages of Callianassa kraussi Stebb. were previously unknown. Larvae were bred out in the laboratory and found to be incapable of swimming. There are two larval stages, lasting 3 to 5 days in sea water of 34 to 35 S at 20 °C. Observations under simulated field conditions in the laboratory, and in the field—where burrow casts were made using a polyester resin, indicated that the larvae metamorphose to the first post-larval stage in the parent burrow, and then burrow directly into the wall of the parent burrow.  相似文献

Survival, developmental and consumption rate (Artemia nauplii ingested per day) as well as predation efficiency (ingested per available Artemia nauplii) were studied during the larval development of the shallow-water burrowing thalassinid Callianassa tyrrhena (Petagna, 1792), which exhibits an abbreviated type of development with only two zoeal stages and a megalopa. The larvae, hatched from berried females from S. Euboikos Bay (Aegean Sea, Greece), were reared at 10 temperature–food density combinations (19 and 24 °C; 0, 2, 4, 8 and 16 Artemia nauplii d−1). Enhanced starvation resistance was evident: 92 and 58% of starved zoeas I molted to zoea II, while metamorphosis to megalopa was achieved by 76 and 42% of the hatched zoeas at 19 and 24 °C, respectively. The duration of both zoeal stages was affected by temperature, food density and their interaction. Nevertheless, starvation showed different effects at the two temperatures: compared to the fed shrimp, the starved zoeae exhibited accelerated development at 19 °C (8.4 d) but delayed metamorphosis at 24 °C (5.9 d). On the other hand, both zoeal stages were able to consume food at an increased rate as food density and temperature increased. Predation efficiency also increased with temperature, but never exceeded 0.6. Facultative lecithotrophy, more pronounced during the first zoeal stage of C.tyrrhena, can be regarded as an adaptation of a species whose larvae can respond physiologically to the different temperature–food density combinations encountered in the wide geographical range of their natural habitat. The portunid crabScylla serrata (Forskål) is shown to migrate offshore to spawn. Records of 447S. serrata caught as bycatch by trawlers in the tropical waters of northern Australia were analysed with respect to area, depth, distance offshore and month of capture as well as the sex and size of the crabs and whether the females were ovigerous. The crabs were caught mainly in three areas that correspond to the tiger prawn trawl fishery, at between 10 and 60 m depth (mean 28.5 m), 3 to 95 km offshore (mean 17.9 km). Most (87%) of the crabs were captured in October and November, which suggests they move offshore in September and October. No crabs were reported from offshore by February. Over 97% of the crabs caught offshore were female, of these 61.5% were ovigerous. The size range of females (100–109 to 200–209 mm carapace-width size classes) and males (120–129 to 200–209 mm carapace-width size classes) caught was similar. The frequent occurrence in coastal waters of females that are larger than the modal size at spawning, as well as mature females with spent ovaries, suggests that many females return to the coast after spawning. Although some species of portunid crab are euryhaline, mature females of estuarine species migrate to the sea to spawn. The migration byS. serrata described here is far more extensive than would be required to reach sea water salinities; it probably provides a dispersal mechanism for larvae to enable the megalopa stage to recruit to habitats distant from those of the parents.  相似文献

Shrimp, Penaeus semisulcatus, were collected from Kuwaiti waters in 1980, and the R-cells in the hepatopancreas were observed during the digestive cycle. During the first 12 h they absorb soluble material from the lumen of the gland and, subsequently, they take-up soluble and particulate material from the haemolymph. Within the cytoplasm, apical and basal systems of smooth endoplasmic reticulum are concerned with these processes. Pinocytosis only occurs at the basal cell membrane. The absorbed material is stored as lipid and glycogen, and copper, sulphur and other elements are accumulated in a large dense vacuole. These activities are integrated with those of the other cell types to effect the assimilation of food in the hepatopancreas. A scheme is proposed which accounts for the main processes of digestion. The hepatopancreas governs the duration of the digestive cycle, which takes at least 24 h. Observations on the nature of intracellular storage and waste products could be used to assess the dietary requirements of artificially reared shrimp.  相似文献

Variability and dominance of Euphausia superba Dana larval forms (Furcilia-I and Furcilia-II stages) in the plankton of the Scotia and Weddell Seas have been investigated. New forms (1, 2, 3 and 14) have been recorded. The dominant forms of Furcilia-I stage are proposed to represent the initial dominants. In accordance with the initial dominance, five types of larval form combinations have been established. During the initial dominance change — from 5 to 2, the larval form number increases. This phenomenon is due to parallel development of euphauiid larvae; it results from a developmental pathway change in the main larval mass. Such deviations are reflected in an initial dominance change. In each pathway, the larvae pass through an unequal number of moults before reaching Form 5 (in accordance with the proposed moult scheme of Furcilia-I stage larvae). In the case of initial dominance of less-developed forms, the presence of different parallel pathways increases. As a result, the total number of larval forms present in the plankton changes, causing increased variability of the total number of larval forms. Each type of larval form combination is the result of summation of all larval forms, which derive from different developmental pathways of the larvae in different localities. The most usual developmental pathway for Euphausia superba is through Form 5, which may, thus, be regarded as the main developmental pathway for this species. This pathway probably corresponds to optimal environment conditions for larval growth and morphogenesis with maximal synchronisation of both processes. Consequently, it may be suggested that changes in developmental pathways of larvae are connected with suboptimal environmental conditions.  相似文献

Changes in lipid class, fatty acid, fat-soluble vitamins, amino acid and minerals were studied during larval development of Maja brachydactyla Balss, 1922 in order to provide information of its ontogeny and evaluate possible dietary deficiencies and constraints. Four different batches were analyzed from hatching to metamorphosis using enriched Artemia as food. Cultured larvae were in a good nutritional condition as confirmed by the continuous lipid accumulation throughout ontogeny. A regulation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) occurred during development in order to maintain adequate basal levels of ω-3 fatty acids (likely through a retro conversion of C20 and C22 into C18 PUFA). Variations in the tocopherol levels indicated its possible role in PUFA protection against oxidation. Essential amino acid balance during development was not correlated with the Artemia feeding regime, but rather reflected inherent variations of the own species ontogeny. Larval requirements in essential minerals were fully supplied by the enriched Artemia.  相似文献

The calanoid copepodEurytemora velox was collected from rock pools at Castletown, Isle of Man, UK. Its optimum environmental requirements, particularly temperature and salinity, were determined, with a view to its possible future use as living food in intensive fish and shellfish farming. The species was cultured in 21 different temperature and salinity combinations. Investigations covered a period of two years from December 1983 to December 1985. Complete development from hatching to adult stage was followed in 21 temperature and salinity combinations. Nauplii suffered relatively high mortalities, indicating the sensitivity of this development stage to variations in temperature and salinity. Highest nauplii survival was observed in the combinations 15°C with 25 and 20 S and 20°C with 20 S, the highest copepodite survival at 10°C and 20 S. Lower salinities were tolerated better at higher temperatures and higher salinities at lower temperatures. Development time varied with the temperature and salinity combinations. Lower salinities at the lower temperatures of 10° and 15°C and both lower and higher salinities at 20°C prolonged development, particularly of the naupliar stage. Highest Q5 values (i.e., rate of change of development with a 5 C° increase in temperature) were recorded for the naupliar stage. Statistical analysis indicated that salinity influences the survival of both nauplii and copepodites; however, this effect is not linear.  相似文献

Trace-metal distribution in tissues of the shrimp Pleoticus muelleri Bate from the Patagonian region, Argentina, was related to sex, size and physiological condition. Concentrations of cadmium, copper, manganese and zinc were determined in the digestive gland, male reproductive system and muscle of adult specimens. Significant (p<0.01) sex-dependent differences in mean metal concentrations (g g-1 wet wt) were found in the following tissues of males and females, respectively: digestive gland, Cu, 82.9 and 30.8; Zn, 32.5 and 44.9; reproductive system, Zn, 12.8 and 38.6; Mn, 1.7 and 3.1; Cd, 0.29 and 0.58. Metal levels of muscle showed no significant differences between sexes. Cadmium was not detected in muscle, suggesting that its incorporation into this tissue was strictly regulated. Metal concentrations in the male reproductive system were in general weakly correlated (0.001<p<0.05) with either body size or the concentration of metals in the digestive gland. The developing ovary incorporated substantial amounts of zinc, while cadmium and copper levels decreased at proportional rates (p<0.001). The patterns of the variations in the concentrations of these metals in the ovary strongly suggested that a regulatory mechanism operated throughout oogenesis. Manganese was not involved in this presumptive mechanism. The results of this study are discussed in terms of concentrations and in absolute amounts for standardized individuals.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on molting, growth, and maturation rates was studied on laboratory-maintained Euphausia superba. The length of intermolt periods (IMP's) was inversely proportional to temperature (20.10 d, SD=1.60, at 0.12°C; 16.87 d, SD=1.68, at 0.97°C; and 12.48 d, SD=0.90, at 4.48°C), and directly proportional to krill size at 0.12°C and 0.97°C. For individually maintained krill the maximum growth rate at 4.48°C (0.068 mm d-1) was nearly twice that at 0.68°C (0.037 mm d-1). There was no observable temperature effect on maturation rates. The maturation changes of juveniles at all temperatures indicated that more than two years are probably required to reach maturity. Mature males and females regressed to immature forms, suggesting that E. superba may reproduce in successive years. These results and previously reported field and laboratory data for E. superba and other euphausiid species suggest a 4+ year life span for this species. This work was supported by NSF grant DPP 76-23437  相似文献

Groups of male Uca pugilator (Bosc) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Ocypodidae), acclimated to sublethal pressure (34 atm) subaqueously for 5 and 10 days, were observed subsequently at pressures up to 272 atm. Behavioral indicators of pressure resistance (“first response” and tetany) were employed to measure degrees of pressure acclimation in comparison with simultaneously and non-simultaneously conducted control experiments. No firm conclusions can be made on the basis of “first response” results, but the pressures required to induce tetany were significantly higher (P≤0.02, one-tailed comparison) in acclimated groups than in non-acclimated groups. These data and earlier studies by other investigators support the assertion that some shallow marine species are capable of at least limited short-term pressure acclimation.  相似文献

The larvae of Euphausia nana Brinton in Sagami Bay and Suruga Bay, Central Japan, are described and illustrated. The furcilia stage is separated into six stages on the basis of the form of the pleopods and the number of terminal telson spines. Furcilia I, no pleopod or non-setose pleopods and seven terminal telson spines. Furcilia II, nonsetose and setose pleopods and seven terminal telson spines. Furcilia III, five pairs of setose pleopods and seven terminal telson spines. Furcilia IV, five pairs of setose pleopods and five terminal telson spines. Furcilia V, five pairs of setose pleopods and three terminal telson spines. Furcilia VI, five pairs of setose pleopods and one terminal telson spine. Segmentation of the antennal endopod and mandible palp occurred at the furcilia V stage. The dominant forms of early furcilia larvae of E. nana differed during different seasons of the year. The total lengths of calyptopis III and furcilia I to VI larvae also showed seasonal changes; they were largest in May and smallest from September to December.  相似文献

The effects of various potential cues on the survival and time to metamorphosis of larvae of the sand crab Emerita talpoida (Say) were examined. Zoeal duration, which ranged from 25 to 43 d, was not correlated with subsequent megalopal survival but had a weak, negative correlation with the duration of the megalopal stage. Neither food, sand nor water from containers with adults directly affected megalopal survival or duration. In a second experiment, the presence of sand both increased the probability of survival and shortened the duration of late zoeal stages. This is the first experimental evidence for delayed zoeal metamorphosis in a decapod. Settlement of E. talpoida appears to occur primarily during the zoeal phase, not at the megalopal stage.  相似文献
