The influence of dissolved NO2 and iron on the oxidation rate of S(IV) species in the presence of dissolved oxygen is presented. To match the conditions in the real environment, the concentration of iron in the reaction solution and trace gases in the gas mixture was typical for a polluted atmosphere. The time dependence of HSO3, SO42−, NO2 and NO3 and the concentration ratio between Fe(II) and total dissolved iron were monitored. Sulphate formation was the most intensive in the presence of an SO2/NO2/air gas mixture and Fe(III) in solution. The highest contribution to the overall oxidation was from Fe-catalysed S(IV) autoxidation. The reaction rate in the presence of both components was equal to the sum of the reaction rates when NO2 and Fe(III) were present separately, indicating that under selected experimental conditions there exist two systems: SO2/NO2/air and SO2/NO2/air/Fe(III), which are unlikely to interact with each other. The radical chain mechanism can be initiated via reactions Fe(III)–HSO3 and NO2–SO32−/HSO3.  相似文献

Large quantities of atmospheric aerosols with compositions SO4 =, NO3 ? and NH4 + have been detected in highly industrialized areas. The major portions of aerosol products are the results of energyrelated fuel combustion. Both microphysical and macrophysical processes are considered in investigating the time dependent evolution of the saturation spectra of condensation nuclei associated with both polluted and clean atmospheres during the time periods of advection fog formation. The results show that the condensation nuclei associated with a polluted atmosphere provide more favorable conditions than condensation nuclei associated with a clean atmosphere to produce dense advection fog, and that attaining a certain degree of supersaturation is not necessarily required for the formation of advection fog with condensation nuclei associated with a polluted atmosphere for monodisperse distribution.  相似文献

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and atmospheric aerosols were sampled simultaneously over the Atlantic Ocean in the vicinity of Bermuda using the NOAA King Air research aircraft. Total and fine (50% cutoff at 2 μm diameter) aerosol fractions were sampled using two independent systems. The average nonsea-salt (nss)SO42− concentrations were 1.9 and 1.0 μg m−3 (as SO42−) for the total and the fine fractions in the boundary layer (BL) and 0.53 and 0.27 μg m−3 in the free troposphere (FT). Non-sea-salt SO42− in the two aerosol fractions were highly correlated (r = 0.90), however a smaller percentage (55%) was found in the fine aerosol near Bermuda relative to that (90%) near the North American continent. The BL SO42− concentrations measured in this study were higher than those measured by others at remote marine locations despite the fact that the 7-day air mass back trajectories indicated little or no continental contact at altitudes of 700 mb and below; the trajectories were over subtropical oceanic areas that are expected to be rich in DMS. DMS concentrations were higher near the ocean surface and decreased with increasing altitude within the BL; the average DMS concentration was 0.13 μg m−3. Trace levels of DMS were also measured in the FT (0.01 μg m−3). Computer simultation of the oxidation and removal of DMS in the marine atmosphere suggests that <50% of the SO42− observed could be related to the natural S cycle.  相似文献

The characteristics of ambient aerosols, affected by solar radiation, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and gas–aerosol interaction, changed rapidly at different spatial and temporal scales. In Taipei Basin, dense traffic emissions and sufficient solar radiation for typical summer days favored the formation of secondary aerosols. In winter, the air quality in Taipei Basin was usually affected by the Asian continental outflows due to the long-range transport of pollutants carried by the winter monsoon. The conventional filter-based method needs a long time for collecting aerosols and analyzing compositions, which cannot provide high time-resolution data to investigate aerosol sources, atmospheric transformation processes, and health effects. In this work, the in situ ion chromatograph (IC) system was developed to provide 15-min time-resolution data of nine soluble inorganic species (Cl, NO2, NO3, SO42−, Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+). Over 89% of all particles larger than approximately 0.056 μm were collected by the in situ IC system. The in situ IC system is estimated to have a limit of detection lower than 0.3 μg m−3 for the various ambient ionic components. Depending on the hourly measurements, the pollutant events with high aerosol concentrations in Taipei Basin were associated with the local traffic emission in rush hour, the accumulation of pollutants in the stagnant atmosphere, the emission of industrial pollutants from the nearby factories, the photochemical secondary aerosol formation, and the long-range transport of pollutants from Asian outflows.  相似文献

Concentrations of several major rainwater components were determined in rain events occurring during the early morning hours (12:00 midnight to 6:00 a.m.) and during the afternoon (12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m.) to examine possible diurnal variations. Generally, rainwater components with gas phase origins (H+, NO3, formaldehyde, H2O2, formic acid, acetic acid, pyruvic acid, oxalic acid, and lactic acid) had higher concentrations during p.m. rain events compared to a.m. events. Although source strengths of both biogenic and anthropogenic rainwater components are generally higher during the daytime, nocturnal removal of a wide variety of components in similar proportions (approximately 2–3× less at night) indicates a physical rather than a chemical process affecting diurnal variations. Rainwater components with aerosol origins (Cl, and SO42−) displayed the opposite diurnal pattern or showed no diurnal variation. Possible reasons for these variations include one or both of the following scenarios: (1) the formation of dew at night removes gas phase atmospheric gasses but not aerosols or (2) during the night, a marine air mass containing lower concentrations of all analytes and higher concentrations of Cl is advected into the area.  相似文献

The concentrations and characteristics of the major components in ambient fine particles in the urban city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan were measured and evaluated. PM2.5 samples were collected using a dichotomous sampler from November 1998 to April 1999 and analyzed for water-soluble ion species using ion chromatography and for carbonaceous species using an elemental analyzer. It was found that SO42−, NO3, and NH4+ dominated the identifiable components, and occupied 42.2% and 90.0% of PM2.5 mass and total dissolved ionic concentrations. Carbonaceous species (organic and elemental carbon) accounted for 20.8% of PM2.5. The secondary aerosol formed through the NO2/SO2 gas-to-particle conversion was estimated based on the sulfur/nitrogen oxidation ratio (SOR/NOR), i.e., sulfate sulfur/nitrate nitrogen to total sulfur/total nitrogen. The average SOR and NOR values were 0.25 and 0.07 for PM2.5. The high SOR and NOR values obtained in this study suggested that there existed a secondary formation of SO42− from SO2 along with NO3 from NO2 in the atmosphere. The secondary organic carbon formed through the volatile organic compound gas-to-particle conversion was estimated from the minimum ratio between organic and elemental carbon obtained in this study, and was found to constitute 40.0% of the total organic carbon for PM2.5 (6.6% of the particle mass). The results obtained in this study suggest that the formation of secondary aerosols due to conversion from gaseous precursors is significant and important in urban locations.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of over 2 years of measurements of several of the species comprising atmospheric SOx (=SO2+SO42−) and NOy (=NO+NO2 + PAN + HNO3+NO3+ organicnitrates + HONO + 2N2O5 …) at Whiteface Mountain, New York. Continuous real-time measurements of SO2 and total gaseous NOy provided data for about 50% and 65% of the period, respectively, and 122 filter pack samples were obtained for HNO3, SO2 and aerosol SO42−, NO3, H+ and NH4+. Concentrations of SO2 and NOy were greatest in winter, whereas concentrations of the reaction products SO42− and HNO3were greatest in summer. The seasonal variation in SO42− was considerably more pronounced than that of HNO3and the high concentrations of SO42− aerosol present in summer were also relatively more acidic than SO42− aerosol in other seasons. As a result, SO42− aerosol was the predominant acidic species present in summer, HNO3was predominant in other seasons. Aerosol NO3 concentrations were low in all seasons and appeared unrelated to simultaneous NOy and HNO3concentrations. These data are consistent with seasonal variations in photochemical oxidation rates and with existing data on seasonal variations in precipitation composition. The results of this study suggest that emission reductions targeted at the summer season might be a cost-effective way to reduce deposition of S species, but would not be similarly cost-effective in reducing deposition of N species. kwAcid deposition, seasonal variation, sulfate, nitrate, nitric acid, sulfur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, hydrogen peroxide, ozone, air pollution, Adirondack Mountains  相似文献

We use an inorganic aerosol thermodynamic equilibrium model in a three-dimensional chemical transport model to understand the roles of ammonia chemistry and natural aerosols on the global distribution of aerosols. The thermodynamic equilibrium model partitions gas-phase precursors among modeled aerosol species self-consistently with ambient relative humidity and natural and anthropogenic aerosol emissions during the 1990s.Model simulations show that accounting for aerosol inorganic thermodynamic equilibrium, ammonia chemistry and dust and sea-salt aerosols improve agreement with observed SO4, NO3, and NH4 aerosols especially at North American sites. This study shows that the presence of sea salt, dust aerosol and ammonia chemistry significantly increases sulfate over polluted continental regions. In all regions and seasons, representation of ammonia chemistry is required to obtain reasonable agreement between modeled and observed sulfate and nitrate concentrations. Observed and modeled correlations of sulfate and nitrate with ammonium confirm that the sulfate and nitrate are strongly coupled with ammonium. SO4 concentrations over East China peak in winter, while North American SO4 peaks in summer. Seasonal variations of NO3 and SO4 are the same in East China. In North America, the seasonal variation is much stronger for NO3 than SO4 and peaks in winter.Natural sea salt and dust aerosol significantly alter the regional distributions of other aerosols in three main ways. First, they increase sulfate formation by 10–70% in polluted areas. Second, they increase modeled nitrate over oceans and reduce nitrate over Northern hemisphere continents. Third, they reduce ammonium formation over oceans and increase ammonium over Northern Hemisphere continents. Comparisons of SO4, NO3 and NH4 deposition between pre-industrial, present, and year 2100 scenarios show that the present NO3 and NH4 deposition are twice pre-industrial deposition and present SO4 deposition is almost five times pre-industrial deposition.  相似文献

Two-stage aerosol samples (PM10–2.5 and PM2.5) were collected at a coastal rural site located in the northeastern Mediterranean, between April 2001 and 2002. A total of 562 aerosol samples were analyzed for trace elements (Fe, Ti, Mn, Ca, V, Ni, Zn, Cr) and water-soluble ions (Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl, Br, NO3, SO42−, C2O42− and MS:methane sulfonate). PM10, crustal elements, sea salt aerosols and NO3 were mainly associated with the coarse mode whereas non-sea salt (nss)SO42−, C2O42−; MS, NH4+, Cr and Ni were found predominantly in the fine fraction. Concentrations of aerosol species exhibited orders of magnitude change from day to day and the aerosol chemical composition is heavily affected by dust events under the influence of airflow from North Africa. During the sampling period, 11 specific mineral dust events of duration varying from 1 day to a week have been identified and their influence on the chemical composition of aerosols has been studied in detail. Ionic balance analysis performed in the coarse and fine aerosol fractions indicated anion and cation deficiency due to CO32− and H+, respectively. A relationship between nssSO42− and NH4+ denoted that sulfate particles were partially neutralized (70%) by ammonium. Excess-K/BC presented two distinct ratios for winter and summer, indicating two different sources: fossil fuel burning in winter and biomass burning in summer.  相似文献

Every year, during the pre-monsoon period (March–May), a pronounced increase in aerosol optical depth (AOD) is observed over the eastern Arabian Sea, which is attributed to the transport of continental aerosols. This paper presents the altitude distribution of tropospheric aerosols, characteristics of elevated aerosol layers and aerosol radiative heating of the atmosphere during the pre-monsoon season over Trivandrum (8.5°N, 77°E), a station located at the southwest coast of Indian peninsula which is covered by the eastern Arabian Sea plume. Altitude profiles of aerosol backscatter coefficient (βa) and linear depolarization ratio (LDR) reveal two distinct aerosol layers persisting between 0–2 km and 2–4 km. The layer at 2–4 km, which contributes about 25% of the AOD during polluted conditions, contains significant amount of non-spherical aerosols. This layer is prominent only when the advection of dry airmass occurs from the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent and northern Arabian Sea. Role of long-range transport in the development of this aerosol layer is further confirmed using latitude–altitude cross-section of βa observed by CALIPSO. Aerosol content in the layer below 2 km is large when advection of air occurs from the north and east Arabian Sea and is significantly small when it occurs from the southwest Arabian Sea or Indian Ocean. During the highly polluted conditions, aerosols tend to increase the diurnal mean atmospheric radiative heating rate by ~0.8 K day?1 at 500 m and 0.3 K day?1 at 3 km, which are about 80% and 30% of the respective radiative heating in the aerosol-free atmosphere.  相似文献

From December to April, the Arctic air mass is polluted by man-made mid-latitudinal emissions from fossil fuel combustion, smelting and industrial processes. In the rest of the year, pollution levels are much lower. This is the outcome of less efficient pollutant removal processes and better south (S) to north (N) transport during winter. In winter, the Arctic air mass covers much of Eurasia and N. America. Meteorological flow fields and the distribution of anthropogenic SO2 emissions in the northern hemisphere favor northern Eurasia as the main source of visibility reducing haze. Observations of SO42− concentrations in the atmosphere throughout the Arctic yield, depending on location and year, a January–April mean of 1.5–3.9 μg m−3 in the Norwegian Arctic to 1.2–2.2 μg m−3 in the N. American Arctic. An estimate of the mean vertical profile of fine particle aerosol mass during March and April shows that, on average, pollution is concentrated in the lower 5 km of the atmosphere. Not only are anthropogenic particles present in the Arctic atmosphere but also gases such as SO2, perfluorocarbons and pesticides. The acidic nature and seasonal variation of Arctic pollution is reflected in precipitation, the snowpack and glacier snow in the Arctic. A pH of 4.9–5.2 in winter and ~ 5.6 in summer is expected in the absence of calcareous wind blown soil. Glacial records indicate that Arctic air pollution has undergone a marked increase since the mid 1950s paralleling a marked increase in SO2 and NOx emissions in Europe. Effects of Arctic pollution include a reduction in visibility and perturbation of the solar radiation budget in April–June. Potential effects are the acidification and toxification of sensitive ecosystems.  相似文献

To better understand the origins of aerosol nitrogen, we measured concentrations of total nitrogen (TN) and its isotope ratios (δ15N) in tropical Indian aerosols (PM10) collected from Chennai (13.04°N; 80.17°E) on day- and night-time basis in winter and summer 2007. We found high δ15N values (+15.7 to +31.2‰) of aerosol N (0.3–3.8 μg m?3), in which NH4+ is the major species (78%) with lesser contribution from NO3? (6%). Based on the comparison of δ15N in Chennai aerosols with those reported for atmospheric aerosols from mid-latitudes and for the particles emitted from point sources (including a laboratory study), as well as the δ15N ratios of cow-dung samples (this study), we found that the atmospheric aerosol N in Chennai has two major sources; animal excreta and bio-fuel/biomass burning from South and Southeast Asia. We demonstrate that a gas-to-particle conversion of NH3 to NH4HSO4 and (NH4)2SO4 and the subsequent exchange reaction between NH3 and NH4+ are responsible for the isotopic enrichment of 15N in aerosol nitrogen.  相似文献

The effects of (NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3, NaCl, NH4Cl, and Na2SO4 aerosols on the kinetics of 1-propanol oxidation in the presence of the hydroxyl radical have been investigated using the relative rate technique. p-Xylene was used as a reference compound. Two different aerosol concentrations that are typical of polluted urban conditions were tested. The total surface areas of aerosols were 1400 (condition I) and 3400 μm2 cm−3 (condition II). Results indicate that aerosols promote the oxidation of 1-propanol, and the extents of the promoting effects depend on the aerosol composition and concentration. Increases in the relative rates of the 1-propanol/OH reaction vs. the p-xylene/OH reaction were only observed for (NH4)2SO4 aerosol conditions I and II, NH4NO3 aerosol condition II, and NH4Cl aerosol condition II. These results indicate that NH4+ is the species promoting the oxidation of 1-propanol, and suggests the possibility of a strong interaction between NH4+ and 1-propanol that can change the activation energy of the initial OH attack. These results have profound implications on the use of air quality models for the assessment of air pollution control strategies.  相似文献

The air pollution level in January 1985 is discussed on the basis of the concentrations of NO2 and SO2 measured at three regional background stations in Hungary. For one background air pollution station some aerosol components (SO42−, NO3, NH4+) are also included in the study. The data obtained are compared to average values for January. This comparison makes a severe country-wide pollution episode evident. The fossil fuel consumption and emission data as well as the meteorological parameters observed in this month are analyzed and backward trajectories are calculated to gain some information on the causes of this unusual situation.  相似文献

Precipitation samples over the Arabian Sea collected during Arabian Sea Monsoon Experiment (ARMEX) in 2002–2003 were examined for major water soluble components and acidity of aerosols during the period of winter and summer monsoon seasons. The pH of rain water was alkaline during summer monsoon and acidic during winter monsoon. Summer monsoon precipitation showed dominance of sea-salt components (∼90%) and significant amounts of non-sea salt (nss) Ca2+ and SO42−. Winter monsoon precipitation samples showed higher concentration of NO3 and NH4+ compared to that of summer monsoon, indicating more influence of anthropogenic sources. The rain water data is interpreted in terms of long-range transport and background pollution. In summer monsoon, air masses passing over the north African and Gulf continents which may be carrying nss components are advected towards the observational location. Also, prevailing strong southwesterly winds at surface level produced sea-salt aerosols which led to high sea-salt contribution in precipitation. While in winter monsoon, it was observed that, air masses coming from Asian region towards observational location carry more pollutants like NO3and nss SO42− that acidify the precipitation.  相似文献

In an effort to reduce uncertainties in the quantification of aerosol direct radiative forcing (ADRF) in the southeastern United States (US), a field column experiment was conducted to measure aerosol radiative properties and effects at Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina, and at an adjacent valley site. The experimental period was from June 1995 to mid-December 1995. The aerosol optical properties (single scattering albedo and asymmetry factor) needed to compute ADRF were obtained on the basis of a procedure involving a Mie code and a radiative transfer code in conjunction with the retrieved aerosol size distribution, aerosol optical depth, and diffuse-to-direct solar irradiance ratio. The regional values of ADRF at the surface and top of atmosphere (TOA), and atmospheric aerosol absorption are derived using the obtained aerosol optical properties as inputs to the column radiation model (CRM) of the community climate model (CCM3). The cloud-free instantaneous TOA ADRFs for highly polluted (HP), marine (M) and continental (C) air masses range from 20.3 to −24.8, 1.3 to −10.4, and 1.9 to −13.4 W m−2, respectively. The mean cloud-free 24-h ADRFs at the TOA (at the surface) for HP, M, and C air masses are estimated to be −8±4 (−33±16), −7±4 (−13±8), and −0.14±0.05 (−8±3) W m−2, respectively. On the assumption that the fractional coverage of clouds is 0.61, the annual mean ADRFs at the TOA and the surface are −2±1, and −7±2 W m−2, respectively. This also implies that aerosols currently heat the atmosphere over the southeastern US by 5±3 W m−2 on annual timescales due to the aerosol absorption in the troposphere.  相似文献

The effects of the burning of fireworks on air quality in Beijing was firstly assessed from the ambient concentrations of various air pollutants (SO2, NO2, PM2.5, PM10 and chemical components in the particles) during the lantern festival in 2006. Eighteen ions, 20 elements, and black carbon were measured in PM2.5 and PM10, and the levels of organic carbon could be well estimated from the concentrations of dicarboxylic acids. Primary components of Ba, K, Sr, Cl, Pb, Mg and secondary components of C5H6O42−, C3H2O42−, C2O42−, C4H4O42−, SO42−, NO3 were over five times higher in the lantern days than in the normal days. The firework particles were acidic and of inorganic matter mostly with less amounts of secondary components. Primary aerosols from the burning of fireworks were mainly in the fine mode, while secondary formation of acidic anions mainly took place on the coarse particles. Nitrate was mainly formed through homogeneous gas-phase reactions of NO2, while sulfate was largely from heterogeneous catalytic transformations of SO2. Fe could catalyze the formation of nitrate through the reaction of α-Fe2O3 with HNO3, while in the formation of sulfate, Fe is not only the catalyst, but also the oxidant. A simple method using the concentration of potassium and a modified method using the ratio of Mg/Al have been developed to quantify the source contribution of fireworks. It was found that over 90% of the total mineral aerosol and 98% of Pb, 43% of total carbon, 28% of Zn, 8% of NO3, and 3% of SO42− in PM2.5 were from the emissions of fireworks on the lantern night.  相似文献

A goal of the acidic deposition control program in the United States has been to link emissions control policies, such as those mandated under Title IV of the US Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) of 1990, to improvements in air and water quality. Recently, several researchers have reported trends in the time series of pollutant data in an effort to evaluate the effectiveness of the CAAA in reducing the acidic deposition problem. It is well known that pollutant concentrations are highly influenced by meteorological and climatic variations. Also, spatial and temporal inhomogeneities in time series of pollutant concentrations, induced by differences in the data collection, reduction, and reporting practices, can significantly affect the trend estimates. We present a method to discern breaks or discontinuities in the time series of pollutants stemming from emission reductions in the presence of meteorological and climatological variability. Using data from a few sites, this paper illustrates that linear trend estimates of concentrations of SO2, aerosol SO42−, and precipitation-weighted SO42− and NO3 can be biased because of such complex features embedded in pollutant time series.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a study to investigate the atmospheric oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO2). A detailed model of gas-phase chemistry, aerosol thermodynamics and aerosol chemistry is employed to simulate atmospheric sulfate formation. The calculations indicate that, in addition to the gasphase oxidation by hydroxyl (OH) radicals, SO2 oxidation in aqueous aerosols may also contribute significantly to sulfate formation. Reactions of SO2 with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and O2 (catalyzed by Fe3+ and Mn2+) are identified as principal aqueous-phase oxidation mechanisms. The results of this study confirm the conclusions drawn from the analysis of ambient aerosol data qualitatively. However, some discrepancies also exist between the results of our modeling study and field data. Such discrepancies emphasize the need for the collection of ambient data for a more rigorous and quantitative evaluation of atmospheric aerosol models.  相似文献

Numerical precipitation scavenging models are used to investigate the relationship between the inflow concentrations of sulfur species to precipitation systems and the resulting sulfur wet deposition. Simulations have been made for summer and winter seasons using concentration ranges of SO2, aerosol SO42−, H2O2 and O3 appropriate for the eastern U.S. summer simulations use one-dimensional timedependent convective cloud and scavenging models; winter simulations use two-dimensional steady-state warm-frontal models. Sulfur scavenging mechanisms include nucleation scavenging of aerosol, aqueous reactions of H2O2, O3 and HCHO with S(IV), and nonreactive S(IV) scavenging. Over the wide range of conditions that have been examined, the relation between sulfur inflow and sulfur wet deposition varies from nearly linear to strongly nonlinear. The degree of nonlinearity is most affected by aerosol SO42− levels and relative levels of SO2 vs H2O2. Higher aerosol SO42− levels (as found in summer) produce a more linear relation. The greatest nonlinearity occurs when SO2 exceeds H2O2. Winter simulations show more nonlinearity than summer simulations.  相似文献
