The effect of black carbon (BC) on climate forcing is potentially important, but its estimates have large uncertainties due to a lack of sufficient observational data. The BC mass concentration in the southeastern US was measured at a regionally representative site, Mount Gibbes (35.78°N, 82.29°W, 2006 m MSL). The air mass origin was determined using 48-h back trajectories obtained from the hybrid single-particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory model. The highest average concentration is seen in polluted continental air masses and the lowest in marine air masses. During the winter, the overall average BC value was 74.1 ng m−3, whereas the overall summer mean BC value is higher by a factor of 3. The main reason for the seasonal difference may be enhanced thermal convection during summer, which increases transport of air pollutants from the planetary boundary layer of the surrounding urban area to this rural site. In the spring of 1998, abnormally high BC concentrations from the continental sector were measured. These concentrations were originating from a biomass burning plume in Mexico. This was confirmed by the observations of the Earth probe total ozone mapping spectrometer. The BC average concentrations of air masses transported from the polluted continental sector during summer are low on Sunday to Tuesday with a minimum value of 256 ng m−3 occurring on Monday, and high on Wednesday to Friday with a maximum value of 379 ng m−3 occurring on Friday. The net aerosol radiative forcing (scattering effects plus absorption effects) per unit vertical depth at 2006 m MSL is calculated to be −1.38×10−3 W m−3 for the southeastern US. The magnitude of direct radiative forcing by aerosol scattering is reduced by 15±7% due to the BC absorption.  相似文献

A new technique using ground-based FTIR spectroscopy has been developed to investigate the vertical distribution of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere. Complementary measurements of atmospheric emission and solar absorption over the infrared region have been carried out sequentially to determine the amounts of carbon monoxide in the lower and upper atmosphere. The method is based on the fact that the two techniques of remote sensing are inherently sensitive to the carbon monoxide amount in different regions of the atmosphere. The measurements have been made under summertime conditions at a northern mid-latitude rural setting with a relatively pollution-free atmosphere. The total zenith column amount was determined to be 1.84×1018 molecules cm-2±7% which was based on the solar absorption measurement. From the analysis of the thermal emission spectrum, which is sensitive to carbon monoxide only in the lower troposphere, a zenith column amount of 1.01×1018 molecules cm-2±10% was estimated for the first 4.8 km of the atmosphere; this corresponded to an average carbon monoxide mixing ratio of 118 ppbv. Comparing the results of the two measurements indicated that a zenith column amount 8.3×1017 molecules cm-2±20%, or an average mixing ratio of 66 ppbv, was present in the free troposphere above an altitude of 4.8 km. These results are consistent with those reported for other northern mid-latitude locations using various in situ and solar absorption measuring techniques.  相似文献

The quality of an emission calculation model based on emission factors measured on roller test stands and statistical traffic data was evaluated using source strengths and emission factors calculated from real-world exhaust gas concentration differences measured upwind and downwind of a motorway in southwest Germany. Gaseous and particulate emissions were taken into account. Detailed traffic census data were taken during the measurements. The results were compared with findings of similar studies. The main conclusion is the underestimation of CO and NOx source strengths by the model. On the average, it amounts to 23% in case of CO and 17% for NOx. The latter underestimation results from an undervaluation by 22% of NOx emission factors of heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs). There are significant differences between source strengths on working days and weekends because of the different traffic split between light-duty vehicles (LDVs) and HDVs. The mean emission factors of all vehicles from measurements are 1.08 g km−1 veh−1 for NOx and 2.62 g km−1 veh−1 for CO. The model calculations give 0.92 g km−1 veh−1 for NOx and 2.14 g km−1 veh−1 for CO.The source strengths of 21 non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) compounds quantified are underestimated by the model. The ratio between the measured and model-calculated emissions ranges from 1.3 to 2.1 for BTX and up to 21 for 16 other NMHCs. The reason for the differences is the insufficient knowledge of NMHC emissions of road traffic.Particulate matter emissions are dominated by ultra-fine particles in the 10–40 nm range. As far as aerosols larger than 29 nm are concerned, 1.80×1014 particles km−1 veh−1 are determined for all vehicles, 1.22×1014 particles km−1 veh−1 and an aerosol volume of 0.03 cm3 km−1 veh−1 are measured for LDVs, and for HDVs 7.79×1014 particles km−1 veh−1 and 0.41 cm3 km−1 veh−1 are calculated. Traffic-induced turbulence has been identified to have a decisive influence on exhaust gas dispersion near the source.  相似文献

Experiments were performed at Summit, Greenland (72°34′ N, 38°29′ W) to investigate hydroxyl mixing ratios in the sunlit surface snowpack (or firn). We added a carefully selected mixture of hydrocarbon gases (with a wide range of hydroxyl reactivities) to a UV and visible light transparent flow chamber containing undisturbed natural firn. The relative decrease in mixing ratios of these gases allowed estimation of the lower limit mixing ratio of hydroxyl radicals in the near-surface firn pore spaces. Hydroxyl mixing ratios in the firn air followed a diurnal cycle in summer 2003 (10–12 July), with peak values of more than 3.2×106 molecules cm−3 between 13:00 and 16:00 local time. The minimum value estimated was 1.1×106 molecules cm−3 at 20:00 local time. Results during spring of 2004 showed lower, but rapidly increasing, peak hydroxyl mixing ratios of 1.1×106 molecules cm−3 in the early afternoon on 15 April and 1.5×106 molecules cm−3 on 1 May. Our firn hydroxyl estimates were similar to directly measured above-snow ambient levels during the spring field season, but were only about 30% of ambient levels during summer.  相似文献

The radiative properties of aerosols that are transparent to light in the near-UV and visible, such as sulfate aerosols, can be dramatically modified when mixed with absorbing material such as soot. In a previous work we had shown that the aldol condensation of carbonyl compounds produces light-absorbing compounds in sulfuric acid solutions. In this work we report the spectroscopic and kinetic parameters necessary to estimate the effects of these reactions on the absorption index of sulfuric acid aerosols in the atmosphere. The absorption spectra obtained from the reactions of six different carbonyl compounds (acetaldehyde, acetone, propanal, butanal, 2-butanone, and trifluoroacetone) and their mixtures were compared over 190–1100 nm. The results indicated that most carbonyl compounds should be able to undergo aldol condensation. The products are oligomers absorbing light in the 300–500 nm region where few other compounds absorb, making them important for the radiative properties of aerosols. Kinetic experiments in 96–75 wt% H2SO4 solutions and between 273 and 314 K gave an activation energy for the rate constant of formation of the aldol products of acetaldehyde of −(70±15) kJ mol−1 in 96 wt% solution and showed that the effect of acid concentration was exponential. A complete expression for this rate constant is proposed where the absolute value in 96 wt% H2SO4 and at 298 K is scaled to the Henry's law coefficient for acetaldehyde and the absorption cross-section for the aldol products assumed in this work. The absorption index of stratospheric sulfuric acid aerosols after a 2-year residence time was estimated to 2×10−4, optically equivalent to a content of 0.5% of soot and potentially significant for the radiative forcing of these aerosols and for satellite observations in channels where the aldol products absorb.  相似文献

The effects of natural compounds on reducing formaldehyde emission from plywood were investigated. Urea, catechin and vanillin were examined as the natural formaldehyde reducers. The microemission cell, with an internal volume of 35 ml, the maximum exposed test surface area of 177 cm2 and an air purge flow rate of 50 ml min−1, was used to measure specific emission rate (SER). In the case of no reducer treatment, formaldehyde emission from plywood was fast and SERs were 4.4 mg m−2 h−1 at 30 °C and 15 mg m−2 h−1 at 60 °C. When this plywood was treated with the natural compounds, the SERs of formaldehyde were decreased at all temperatures. In the case of urea treatment, the SERs of formaldehyde decreased to 0.30 mg m−2 h−1 at 30 °C and 0.65 mg m−2 h−1 at 60 °C. When the urea treatment was applied to the inside of kitchen cabinet (made from plywood; 270 cm wide, 60 cm deep, 250 cm high), the concentration of formaldehyde was reduced substantially from 1600 to 130 μg m−3. The reducing effect of formaldehyde continued during the observation period (6 months), with a mean concentration of 100 μg m−3. Reducers in the plywood would react with released formaldehyde. Application of natural compounds such as urea, catechin and vanillin could provide a simple and effective approach for suppressing formaldehyde emission from plywood.  相似文献

Intensive aircraft- and ground-based measurements of ultrafine to supermicron particles in the Osaka metropolitan area, Japan, were carried out on 17–19 March 2003, in order to investigate vertical profiles of size-resolved particles in the urban atmosphere. Differently sized particles were observed at different altitudes on 19 March. Relatively higher concentrations of ultrafine particles (31 nm) and submicron particles (0.3–0.5 μm) were measured (100–200 cm−3) at altitudes of 300 and 600 m, whereas supermicron particles (2–5 μm) were present (300–600 cm−3) at higher altitudes (1300 m in the morning and 2200 m in the afternoon). The chemical composition analysis showed that supermicron particles evidently comprised mainly soil particles mixed internally with anthropogenic species such as carbonaceous components and sulfate. Numerical simulation using the Chemical weather FORecasting System (CFORS) suggested the long-range transport of soil dust and black carbon from the Asian continent. Total number concentrations of particles sized 10–875 nm ranged from 4.8×103 to 3.0×104 cm−3 at an altitude of 300 m and from 7.3×102 to 4.8×103 cm−3 at an altitude of 1300 m. Total number concentrations of particles sized 10–875 nm correlated very well with NOX concentrations, and, therefore, ultrafine and submicron particles were likely emitted from urban activities such as car traffic and vertically transported. Number size distributions at lower altitudes obtained by aircraft measurements were similar to those obtained by ground measurements, with modal diameters of 20–30 nm on 18 March and about 50 nm on 19 March.  相似文献

We investigated CO photoproduction from intact leaves of rice (Oryza sativa L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) by laboratory experiments. CO photoproduction showed positive correlation with light intensity and was positively dependent on oxygen concentration. The average CO photoproduction was 2.6±0.3×1010 molecules cm−2 s−1 from rice leaves and 2.2±0.1×1010 molecules cm−2 s−1 from maize leaves (n=5) at a radiation intensity of 49 mW cm−2. CO photoproduction from senescent rice leaves was 9 times greater (25.7±1.5×1010 molecules cm−2 s−1, n=2) at the same radiation intensity than from live leaves, and responded slowly to changes in oxygen concentration and light intensity. CO photoproduction showed no correlation with CO2 concentration or humidity. This indicates that CO photoproduction in leaves is not directly controlled by carbon metabolism or stomatal conductance. The lack of dependence on stomatal conductance leads to the conclusion that the diffusion of CO from inside the leaves to the atmosphere is not a controlling factor for CO photoproduction from rice and maize leaves.  相似文献

Chemical actinometry was used to measure nitrate photolysis rate coefficients, JNO3, on and in snowpack at Summit, Greenland. Sealed glass tubes containing nitrate and a hydroxyl radical trapping system were buried in snow and exposed for between 2 and 24 h. Average JNO3 values for 2-h midday exposures in early June on surface snow were 10–14×10−7 s−1. Averages over 24 h were 3.5–4.5×10−7 s−1. These values reflect the integrated photon flux and also any variation of the nitrate photolysis rate with temperature. Attenuation of JNO3 within the firn was 0.03–0.04 cm−1 for 24-h exposures and 0.08 cm−1 for a 2-h exposure. Different attenuation coefficients may relate to differential light penetration due to changes in sun angle over the course of 24 h.  相似文献

Isoprene emission capacity measurements are presented from 18 North American oak (Quercus) species and species from six other genera previously found to emit significant quantities of isoprene. Sampling was conducted at physiographically diverse locations in North Carolina, Central California, and Northern Oregon. Emissions from several sun leaves of each species were measured at or near standard conditions (leaf temperature of 30°C and photosynthetically active radiation of 1000 μmol m−2 s−1) using environmentally controlled cuvette systems and gas chromatography with reduction gas detectors. Species mean emission capacity ranged from 39 to 158 μg C g−1 h−1 (mean of 86), or 22 to 79 nmol m−2 s−1 (mean of 44). These rates are 2–28 times higher than those previously reported from the same species, which were summarized in a recent study where isoprene emission rates were assigned based on published data and taxonomy. These discrepancies were attributed to differences in leaf environment during development, measurement technique (branch or plant enclosure versus leaf enclosure), and lack of environmental measurements associated with some of the earlier branch enclosure measurements. Mass-based emission capacities for 15 of 18 oak species, sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), and poplars (Populus trichocarpa and P. deltoides) were within ranges used in current biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emission models, while measured rates for the remaining three oak species, Nyssa sylvatica, Platanus occidentalis, Robinia pseudoacacia, Salix nigra, and Populus hybrids (Populus trichocarpa × P. deltoides) were considerably higher. In addition, mean specific leaf mass of the oak species was 30% higher than assumed in current emission models. Emission rates reported here and in other recent studies support recent conclusions that isoprene emission capacities for sun leaves of high emitting species may be better represented by a value of 100±50 μg C g−1 h−1 during hot summer conditions. We also find that intermediate isoprene emission rates previously suggested for some tree species may not represent their true emission capacities, and that broadleaf plant species may have either low (<1.0 μg C g−1 h−1) or very high (∼100 μg C g−1 h−1) genetic capacity to emit isoprene when mature foliage is exposed to a high ambient temperature and light environment.  相似文献

The kinetics of two structurally similar unsaturated alcohols, 3-butene-2-ol and 2-methyl-3-butene-2-ol (MBO232), with Cl atoms have been investigated for the first time, as a function of temperature using a relative method. As far as we know, the present work also provides the first value for 3-buten-2-ol. The coefficient at room temperature was also obtained for 2-propene-1-ol (allyl alcohol). The reactions were investigated using a 400 L Teflon reaction chamber coupled with gas chromatograph-coupled with flame-ionization detection (GC-FID) detection. The experiments were performed at atmospheric pressure and at temperatures between 256 and 298 K in air or nitrogen as the bath gas. The obtained kinetic data were used to derive the Arrhenius expressions, kMBO232=(2.83±2.50)×10−14 exp (2670±249)/T, k3-buten-2-ol=(0.65±1.60)×10−15 exp (3656±695)/T (in units of cm3 molecule−1 s−1). Finally, results and atmospheric implications are discussed and compared with the reactivity with OH and NO3 radicals.  相似文献

Size distribution of particle number concentrations in the geometric equivalent diameter range 0.01–2.5 μm were determined in three communities, Zerbst, Bitterfeld and Hettstedt of the state of Sachsen-Anhalt in Eastern Germany, in the first half of 1993 and 1999. A Mobile Aerosol Spectrometer (MAS) consisting of a differential mobility particle spectrometer (DMPS) and a laser aerosol spectrometer (LAS-X) were used for size-selective particle number concentration measurements from which mass concentrations were derived based on an apparent mean density of the ambient aerosol of the closely situated city of Erfurt. The total number concentration was governed by ultra-fine particles (<0.1 μm) (81% in 1993 and 90% in 1999) and 0.1–0.5 μm size fraction dominates total mass concentration (approximately 80%). While the mass concentration of fine particles (PM2.5) decreased from 39 to 19 μg m−3, the geometric means of total number concentration showed constant concentration (13.3×103 cm−3 in 1993 and 13.3×103 cm−3 in 1999, p=0.975) and the geometric means of number concentration of ultra-fine particles (UP) between 10 and 30 nm increased from 5.9×103 to 8.2×103 cm−3 from 1993 to 1999 (p=0.016). The temporal changes of number and mass concentrations in the three communities are similar. The clear shift to smaller particle sizes within this six years period was caused by changes of the most prominent sources, traffic and domestic heating, since formerly dominating industries in Bitterfeld and Hettstedt had vanished grossly.  相似文献

The night-time tropospheric chemistry of two stress-induced volatile organic compounds (VOCs), (Z)-pent-2-en-1-ol and pent-1-en-3-ol, has been studied at room temperature. Rate coefficients for reactions of the nitrate radical (NO3) with these pentenols were measured using the discharge-flow technique. Because of the relatively low volatility of these compounds, we employed off-axis continuous-wave cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy for detection of NO3 in order to be able to work in pseudo first-order conditions with the pentenols in large excess over NO3. The rate coefficients were determined to be (1.53±0.23)×10−13 and (1.39±0.19)×10−14 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 for reactions of NO3 with (Z)-pent-2-en-1-ol and pent-1-en-3-ol. An attempt to study the kinetics of these reactions with a relative-rate technique, using N2O5 as source of NO3 resulted in significantly higher apparent rate coefficients. Performing relative-rate experiments in known excesses of NO2 allowed us to determine the rate coefficients for the N2O5 reactions to be (5.0±2.8)×10−19 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 for (Z)-pent-2-en-1-ol, and (9.1±5.8)×10−19 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 for pent-1-en-3-ol. We show that these relatively slow reactions can indeed interfere with rate determinations in conventional relative-rate experiments.  相似文献

A detailed study of resuspension of 1.85 μm MMAD silica particles from five horizontal layers within a small scale spruce canopy was carried out in a wind tunnel in which saplings were exposed to a constant free stream wind speed of 5 m s−1. This provided quantitative estimates of the potential for a tree canopy contaminated with an aerosol deposit to provide (i) an airborne inhalation hazard within the forest environment and (ii) a secondary source of airborne contamination after an initial deposition event. Resuspension occurred with a flux of 1.05×10−7 g m−2 s−1 from spruce saplings initially contaminated at a level of 4.1×10−2 g m−2. An average resuspension rate (Λ) of 4.88×10−7 s−1 was obtained for the canopy as a whole. Values of Λ were significantly different (ANOVA, p<0.001) between canopy layers and Λ was markedly greater at the top of the canopy than lower down although there was a slight increase in Λ at the base of the canopy. The resuspended silica particles deposited onto the soil surface at an average rate of about 5.3×10−8 μg cm−2 s−1. It is concluded that resuspension under wind velocities similar to that used in the reported experiments is likely to pose a relatively small inhalation hazard to humans and a relatively minor source of secondary contamination of adjacent areas. Furthermore, resuspension rates are likely to diminish rapidly with time. The results are discussed in relation to the growing interest in the tree planting schemes in urban areas to reduce the impacts of air pollution.  相似文献

Continuous measurements of aerosol size distributions (3 nm–2 μm) were carried out over a 26 month period (1 April 2001–31 May 2003; 650 days with valid data) in urban East St. Louis, IL, as a part of the US Environmental Protection Agency's Supersite program. This paper analyzes data for the 155 days on which “regional nucleation events” were observed during this study. Such events were observed during every month of the study except January 2003. We observed some differences, however, between events in the summer (defined here as April–September) and winter (December–February). Regional nucleation events were observed more frequently in summer months (36±13% of days) than in winter (8±7%), and nucleated particles grew faster in the summer (6.7±4.8 nm h−1) than in winter (1.8±1.9 nm h−1). The daily maximum in the number concentration of nanoparticles formed by nucleation (4.8±3.5×104 cm−3) was highly variable and showed no clear seasonal dependence. Particle formation increased particle concentrations by an average factor of 3.1±2.8. Maximum daily rates of 3 nm particle production (17±20 cm−3 s−1) were also highly variable and without a clear seasonal dependence. During these events, particle formation rates were typically near their maxima at 08:00–09:00 a.m., but particle production sometimes persisted at diminishing rates until late in the afternoon (15:00–16:00 p.m.).  相似文献

Using the relative kinetic technique the kinetics of the gas-phase reactions of Br radicals with acrolein, methacrolein and methylvinyl ketone have been investigated at (301±3) K in 1013 mbar of (N2+O2) bath gas at varying proportions. In 1013 mbar of synthetic air the following rate coefficients have been obtained (in units of cm3 molecule−1 s−1): acrolein (3.21±0.11)×10−12; methacrolein (2.33±0.08)×10−11; methyl vinyl ketone (1.87±0.06)×10−11. This study represents the first determination of the rate coefficients for these compounds. As for other unsaturated hydrocarbons the rate coefficient with Br was found to increase with increasing partial pressure of O2. From the product studies of the reactions it has been established that addition of Br radicals to the terminal C-atom is the major pathway in all three cases. However, for acrolein H atom abstraction from the -CO–H group is also significant. Mechanisms are proposed to explain the observed products, mainly β-brominated carbonyl compounds.  相似文献

Indo-Gangetic (IG) alluvial plains, one of the largest river basins in the world, suffers from the long range transport of mineral dust from the western arid and desert regions of Africa, Arabia and Rajasthan during the summer (pre-monsoon season, April–June). These dust storms influence the aerosol optical depth (AOD) across the IG plains. The Kanpur AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) station and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) data show pronounced effect on the aerosol optical properties and aerosol size distribution during major dust storm events over the IG plains that have significant effect on the aerosol radiative forcing (ARF). The multi-band AOD, from AERONET and MODIS, show contrasting changes in wavelength dependency over dust affected regions. A time collocated (±30 min) validation of AERONET AOD with MODIS Terra (level 2 swath product) over Kanpur, at a common wavelength of 550 nm for the period 2001–2005 show moderate correlation (R2∼0.6) during the summer season. The average surface forcing is found to change by −23 W m−2 during dust events and the top of the atmosphere (TOA) forcing change by −11 W m−2 as compared to the non-dusty clear-sky days. A strong correlation is found between AOD at 500 nm and the ARF. At surface, the correlation coefficient between AOD and ARF is found to be high (R2=0.925) and is found to be moderate (R2=0.628) at the TOA. The slope of the regression line gives the aerosol forcing efficiency at 500 nm of about −46±2.6 W m−2 and −17±2.5 W m−2 at the surface and the TOA, respectively. The ARF is found to increase with the advance of the dry season in conjunction with the gradual rise in AOD (at 500 nm) from April (0.4–0.5) to June (0.6–0.7) over the IG plains.  相似文献

In an effort to reduce uncertainties in the quantification of aerosol direct radiative forcing (ADRF) in the southeastern United States (US), a field column experiment was conducted to measure aerosol radiative properties and effects at Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina, and at an adjacent valley site. The experimental period was from June 1995 to mid-December 1995. The aerosol optical properties (single scattering albedo and asymmetry factor) needed to compute ADRF were obtained on the basis of a procedure involving a Mie code and a radiative transfer code in conjunction with the retrieved aerosol size distribution, aerosol optical depth, and diffuse-to-direct solar irradiance ratio. The regional values of ADRF at the surface and top of atmosphere (TOA), and atmospheric aerosol absorption are derived using the obtained aerosol optical properties as inputs to the column radiation model (CRM) of the community climate model (CCM3). The cloud-free instantaneous TOA ADRFs for highly polluted (HP), marine (M) and continental (C) air masses range from 20.3 to −24.8, 1.3 to −10.4, and 1.9 to −13.4 W m−2, respectively. The mean cloud-free 24-h ADRFs at the TOA (at the surface) for HP, M, and C air masses are estimated to be −8±4 (−33±16), −7±4 (−13±8), and −0.14±0.05 (−8±3) W m−2, respectively. On the assumption that the fractional coverage of clouds is 0.61, the annual mean ADRFs at the TOA and the surface are −2±1, and −7±2 W m−2, respectively. This also implies that aerosols currently heat the atmosphere over the southeastern US by 5±3 W m−2 on annual timescales due to the aerosol absorption in the troposphere.  相似文献

The photooxidation of methylhydroperoxide (MHP) and ethylhydroperoxide (EHP) was studied in the aqueous phase under simulated cloud droplet conditions. The kinetics and the reaction products of direct photolysis and OH-oxidation were studied for both compounds. The photolysis frequencies obtained were JMHP=4.5 (±1.0)×10−5 s−1 and JEHP=3.8 (±1.0)×10−5 s−1 for MHP and EHP respectively at 6 °C. The rate constants of OH-oxidation of MHP at 6 °C were 6.3 (±2.6)×108 M−1 s−1 and 5.8 (±1.9)×108 M−1 s−1 relative to ethanol and 2-propanol respectively, and the rate constant of OH-oxidation of EHP was 2.1 (±0.6)×109 M−1 s−1 relative to 2-propanol at 6 °C. The reaction products obtained were not only the corresponding aldehydes, but also the corresponding acids, and hydroxyhydroperoxides as primary reaction products. The yields for these products were sensitive to the pH value. The carbon balance was higher than 85% for all experiments, showing that most reaction products were detected. A chemical mechanism was proposed for each reaction, and the atmospheric implications were discussed.  相似文献

The emission of isoprene has been studied from a forest of Abies Borisii-regis, a Mediterranean fir species previously thought to emit only monoterpenes. Emission studies from two independent enclosure experiments indicated a standardised isoprene emission rate of (18.4±3.8) μg gdry-weight−1 h−1, similar in magnitude to species such as eucalyptus and oak which are considered to be strong isoprene emitters. Isoprene emission depended strongly on both leaf temperature (2°C–34°C) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) below 250 μmol m−2 s−1, becoming saturated with respect to PAR above this value. The annual isoprene emission rate was estimated to be (132±29) kT yr−1 for those trees growing within Greece, comparable to current estimates of the total isoprene budget of Greece as a whole, and contributing significantly to regional ozone and carbon monoxide budgets. Monoterpene emission exhibited exponential temperature dependence, with 1,8-cineole, α-pinene, β-pinene and limonene forming the primary emissions. A standardised total monoterpene emission rate of (2.7±1.1) μg gdry-weight−1 h−1 was calculated, corresponding to an annual monoterpene emission rate of (24±12) kT yr−1. Research was conducted as part of the AEROBIC’97 (AEROsol formation from BIogenic organic Carbon) series of field campaigns.  相似文献
