The concentrations of total gaseous mercury (Hg) were determined from an urban area between two different time periods of the late 1980s and the late 1990s and compared to evaluate the mechanisms regulating Hg distribution over a decadal period. Because of time gap and the associated changes in source/sink relationships, the observed concentration levels of Hg were remarkably different between the two periods. The results showed that the Hg levels in the former period were averaged to be 14.4±9.56 ng m−3 (N=2714), while the latter period was recorded at approximately three-fold reduced values of 5.34±3.92 ng m−3 (N=2576). Using the measurement data for the two independent periods, we were able to describe the basic features of Hg distribution that correspond to each time period. When inspected over a 24 h scale, two contrasting patterns emerged for the two time periods. The former was characterized by enhanced concentration levels during daytime, but the latter with relative depletion during daytime. The results of the two periods, when inspected over seasonal scale, showed many similarities and dissimilarities simultaneously. In order to analyze the factors affecting Hg distributions of each period, we conducted correlation analysis on the data groups divided both diurnally and seasonally. Results of these analyses consistently indicate that correlation patterns may be associated with the factors regulating the diurnal variability of Hg. The data for the late 1980s consistently indicate the presence of a single dominant source process that can be represented by the use of coal. However, the patterns described for those of the late 1990s suggest that the sources of Hg be tightly tied up with the general sources of air pollution that can lead to the degradation of urban air quality. In addition, we suspect that notable shifts in meteorological conditions between the two periods might also have been conducive to changes in Hg concentration levels to a certain extent.  相似文献

The soil/plant/atmosphere exchange of carbonyl sulfide (COS) was investigated in an open oak woodland ecosystem at a rural site in northern California. Measurements of atmospheric concentrations of COS were made in June and in December 1994. We found a significant diel cycle with a drop of COS levels by approximately 150 ppt during the night in both seasons. The mean COS daytime background mixing ratios showed a distinct seasonal difference with 465±77 ppt in summer and 375±56 ppt in winter. The nighttime bulk COS flux into the ecosystem was estimated using a micrometeorological model. To address the observed depletion of COS during stable nocturnal boundary layer conditions, the potential of various ecosystem compartments to act as a sink for COS was investigated. Studies using dynamic enclosures flushed with ambient air excluded vegetation as an important sink during nighttime due to high stomatal resistance. Results from soil chamber measurements indicate that the soil can act as a dominant sink for atmospheric COS.  相似文献

Semi-continuous measurements of ambient mercury (Hg) species were performed in Detroit, MI, USA for the calendar year 2003. The mean (±standard deviation) concentrations for gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), particulate mercury (HgP), and reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) were 2.2±1.3 ng m−3, 20.8±30.0, and 17.7±28.9 pg m−3, respectively. A clear seasonality in Hg speciation was observed with GEM and RGM concentrations significantly (p<0.001) greater in warm seasons, while HgP concentrations were greater in cold seasons. The three measured Hg species also exhibited clear diurnal trends which were particularly evident during the summer months. Higher RGM concentrations were observed during the day than at night. Hourly HgP and GEM concentrations exhibited a similar diurnal pattern with both being inversely correlated with RGM. Multivariate analysis coupled with conditional probability function analysis revealed the conditions associated with high Hg concentration episodes, and identified the inter-correlations between speciated Hg concentrations, three common urban air pollutants (sulfur dioxide, ozone, and nitric oxides), and meteorological parameters. This analysis suggests that both local and regional sources were major factors contributing to the observed temporal variations in Hg speciation. Boundary layer dynamics and the seasonal meteorological conditions, including temperature and moisture content, were also important factors affecting Hg variability.  相似文献

Shanghai Meteorological Administration has established a volatile organic compounds (VOCs) laboratory and an observational network for VOCs and ozone (O3) measurements in the city of Shanghai. In this study, the measured VOCs and O3 concentrations from 15 November (15-Nov) to 26 November (26-Nov) of 2005 in Shanghai show that there are strong day-to-day and diurnal variations. The measured O3 and VOCs concentrations have very different characterizations between the two periods. During 15-Nov to 21-Nov (defined as the first period), VOCs and O3 concentrations are lower than the values during 22-Nov to 28-Nov (defined as the second period). There is a strong diurnal variation of O3 during the second period with maximum concentrations of 40–80 ppbv at noontime, and minimum concentrations at nighttime. By contrast, during the first period, the diurnal variation of O3 is in an irregular pattern with maximum concentrations of only 20–30 ppbv. The VOC concentrations change rapidly from 30–50 ppbv during the first period to 80–100 ppbv during the second period. Two chemical models are applied to interpret the measurements. One model is a regional chemical/dynamical model (WRF-Chem) and another is a detailed chemical mechanism model (NCAR MM). Model analysis shows that the meteorological conditions are very different between the two periods, and are mainly responsible for the different chemical characterizations of O3 and VOCs between the two periods. During the first period, meteorological conditions are characterized by cloudy sky and high-surface winds in Shanghai, resulting in a higher nighttime planetary boundary layer (PBL) and faster transport of air pollutants. By contrast, during the second period, the meteorological conditions are characterized by clear sky and weak surface winds, resulting in a lower nighttime PBL and slower transport of air pollutants. The chemical mechanism model calculation shows that different VOC species has very different contributions to the high-ozone concentrations during the second period. Alkane (40 ppbv) and aromatic (30 ppbv) are among the highest VOC concentrations observed in Shanghai. The analysis suggests that the aromatic is a main contributor for the O3 chemical production in Shanghai, with approximately 79% of the O3 being produced by aromatic. This analysis implies that future increase in VOC (especially aromatic) emissions could lead to significant increase in O3 concentrations in Shanghai.  相似文献

In order to assess the temporal variabilities of atmospheric mercury (Hg) from an area moderately impacted by man-made source processes, the concentrations of total gaseous mercury were measured routinely from an urban monitoring station during January 1999–August 2000. The mean hourly concentration of Hg from overall measurements was computed to be 5.26±3.27 ng m−3 (N=11, 572). Using these measurement data, we inspected various aspects on the temporal distribution of Hg. When analyzed over 24 h scale, the pattern was characterized by high concentration during nighttime relative to daytime (e.g., values approaching 9 ng m−3). This pattern was prominent during winter and seen persistently across fall, spring, and summer. When divided seasonally, the highest mean of 6.01 ng m−3 was observed during winter. It appears that such wintertime dominance is most likely to come from the anthropogenic sources such as household heating systems from late fall to early spring. A close inspection of the Hg data however indicated that the seasonal variation proceeded quite dynamically. Inspection of seasonally divided data groups generally showed substantial variabilities among different months. In order to analyze the factors affecting Hg distributions over different time scale, we conducted the correlation analysis. Whereas Hg generally exhibited strong correlations with such parameters as PM, SO2, and NO2, its relationship varied diurnally and seasonally. The overall results of the present study suggest that changes in its source signatures can vary over varying time scale under the influence of strong man-made source processes.  相似文献

Measurement of ambient gas-phase total peroxides was performed at the summit of Mount Tai (Mt. Tai, 1534 m above sea level) in central-eastern China during March 22–April 24 and June 16–July 20, 2007. The hourly averaged concentration of peroxides was 0.17 ppbv (± 0.16 ppbv, maximum: 1.28 ppbv) and 0.55 ppbv (± 0.67 ppbv, maximum: 3.55 ppbv) in the spring and summer campaigns, respectively. The average concentration of peroxides at Mt. Tai, which is in a heavily polluted region, was much lower than hydrogen peroxide measurements made at some rural mountain sites, suggesting that significant removal processes took place in this region. An examination of diurnal variation and a correlation analysis suggest that these removal processes could include chemical suppression of peroxide production due to the scavenging of peroxy and hydroxy radicals by high NOx, wet removal by clouds/fogs rich in dissolved sulfur dioxide which reacts quickly with peroxides, and photolysis. These sinks competed with photochemical sources of peroxides, resulting in different mean concentrations and diurnal pattern of peroxides in the spring and summer. A principal component analysis was conducted to quantify the major processes that influenced the variation of peroxide concentrations. This analysis shows that in the spring photochemical production was an important source of peroxides, and the major sink was scavenging during upslope transport of polluted and humid air from the lower part of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) and wet removal by synoptic scale clouds. During the summer, highly polluted PBL air (with high NOx) was often associated with very low peroxides due to the chemical suppression of HO2 by high NOx and wet-removal by clouds/fogs in this sulfur-rich atmosphere, especially during the daytime. Higher concentrations of peroxides, which often appeared at mid-nighttime, were mainly associated with subsidence of air masses containing relatively lower concentrations of NOy.  相似文献

Long-term observations of the nitrate radical concentration and supporting parameters in the continental boundary layer at the rural site Lindenberg near Berlin, Germany, were performed using differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS). Average nighttime NO3 levels were 4.6 ppt, while NO3 steady-state lifetimes (calculated from the NO2–O3 product and the NO3 concentration) varied between 5 s and 615 s with an average of 92 s. The long-term observations offered the possibility to study the importance of NO3 for the oxidation of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and its contribution in the non-photochemical removal of NOx from the atmosphere in different seasons. Analysis of the data showed, that NO3 was depleted by both, reactions with VOCs and indirectly by loss of N2O5 on aerosol surfaces. A clear seasonal variation of the sink distribution was found. The VOC sink dominated during summer while indirect loss was of major importance during the winter months. The results are compared with former long-term campaigns of NO3 in the marine boundary layer.  相似文献

In this paper, results on a PM10 daytime–nighttime measurement campaign carried out in Milan to study the evolution of PM10 concentration and composition in relation to atmospheric dispersion conditions are shown. To account for the evolution of atmospheric dispersion conditions, Radon hourly concentration measurements were performed. The significant correlation between PM10 and 222Rn daytime concentrations evidences the dominant role of atmospheric dispersion in determining the temporal variation of PM10 levels. Whenever 222Rn concentrations accumulate during the night (indicating the formation of nocturnal atmospheric stability conditions), PM10 concentrations are higher than those registered during the daytime before, despite a decrease in emissions from active sources. On the contrary, when 222Rn concentrations do not accumulate during night hours, PM10 levels are lower than those measured during the daytime before. As concerns the average elemental concentrations (in ng m−3), the nighttime–daytime variations are in the range −17% to +37%; during the night, soil-related elements (Al, Si, Ca, Ti) decrease while anthropogenic elements (Zn, Cu, Fe, Pb) increase.A case study concerning a ‘green’ Sunday (when traffic was forbidden from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) is also discussed. The difference of PM10 concentration and elemental composition registered during the ‘green’ Sunday daytime and the following nighttime, together with the information on atmospheric dilution power obtained by Radon measurements, allowed the characterisation of the traffic source elemental profile and increased the comprehension of the low effectiveness of some PM10 reduction strategies.  相似文献

A four and a half year study of ozone concentrations in the Central Mediterranean was carried out between January 1997 and August 2001 on a background monitoring station located on the island of Gozo midway between Southern Europe and North Africa.Seasonal and diurnal variations of background ozone are documented. They show the existence of seasonal cycles with a primary maximum in spring followed by a secondary, more variable maximum in summer which indicates that photochemically produced ozone is being transported over the Mediterranean to the rural island of Gozo. Although peak ozone concentrations seldom exceeded 100 ppbv during summer, the background ozone-mixing ratios (as monthly averages) are some of the highest values which can be found at low latitude sites throughout the world. An increasing trend in the annual background ozone concentration from 48.2 ppbv in 1997 to 52.2 ppbv in 2000 is observed. During wintertime the average ozone mixing-ratio (as monthly averages) of 44 ppbv in December is approximately twice as high as on the European continent. This may imply that on Malta, due to higher average ozone concentrations between autumn and spring (the main growing season), crop damage of high economic value may occur.  相似文献

Diurnal radon concentrations were measured in a school and an office that exhibited high average annual radon concentrations from passive alpha track detector measurements. The diurnal measurements in both cases showed very high nighttime concentrations (3000–6000 Bq m−3) and low daytime concentrations under the action level of 200 Bq m−3 used in Norway. These results suggest that the only way to accurately assess radon exposure in day-use buildings is to include measurements of radon concentrations limited to the hours when the buildings are actually in use.  相似文献

A mobile pollutant measurement laboratory was designed and built at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland) for the measurement of on-road ambient concentrations of a large set of trace gases and aerosol parameters with high time resolution (<15 s for most instruments), along with geographical and meteorological information. This approach allowed for pollutant level measurements both near traffic (e.g. in urban areas or on freeways/main roads) and at rural locations far away from traffic, within short periods of time and at different times of day and year. Such measurements were performed on a regular base during the project year of gas phase and aerosol measurements (YOGAM). This paper presents data measured in the Zürich (Switzerland) area on a late autumn day (6 November) in 2001. The local urban particle background easily reached 50 000 cm−3, with additional peak particle number concentrations of up to 400 000 cm−3. The regional background of the total particle number concentration was not found to significantly correlate with the distance to traffic and anthropogenic emissions of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. On the other hand, this correlation was significant for the number concentration of particles in the size range 50–150 nm, indicating that the particle number concentration in this size range is a better traffic indicator than the total number concentration. Particle number size distribution measurements showed that daytime urban ambient air is dominated by high number concentrations of ultrafine particles (nanoparticles) with diameters <50 nm, which are immediately formed by traffic exhaust and thus belong to the primary emissions. However, significant variation of the nanoparticle mode was also observed in number size distributions measured in rural areas both at daytime and nighttime, suggesting that nanoparticles are not exclusively formed by primary traffic emissions. While urban daytime total number concentrations were increased by a factor of 10 compared to the nighttime background, corresponding factors for total surface area and total volume concentrations were 2 and 1.5, respectively.  相似文献

Surface ozone records from ten polar research stations were investigated for the dependencies of ozone on radiative processes, snow-photochemisty, and synoptic and stratospheric transport. A total of 146 annual data records for the Arctic sites Barrow, Alaska; Summit, Greenland; Alert, Canada; Zeppelinfjellet, Norway; and the Antarctic stations Halley, McMurdo, Neumayer, Sanae, Syowa, and South Pole were analyzed. Mean ozone at the Northern Hemisphere (NH) stations (excluding Summit) is ∼5 ppbv higher than in Antarctica. Statistical analysis yielded best estimates for the projected year 2005 median annual ozone mixing ratios, which for the Arctic stations were 33.5 ppbv at Alert, 28.6 ppbv at Barrow, 46.3 ppbv ppb at Summit and 33.7 ppbv at Zeppelinfjellet. For the Antarctic stations the corresponding ozone mixing ratios were 21.6 ppbv at Halley, 27.0 ppbv at McMurdo, 24.9 ppbv at Neumayer, 27.2 ppbv at Sanae, 29.4 ppbv at South Pole, and 25.8 ppbv at Syowa. At both Summit (3212 m asl) and South Pole (2830 m asl), annual mean ozone is higher than at the lower elevation and coastal stations. A trend analysis revealed that all sites in recent years have experienced low to moderate increases in surface ozone ranging from 0.02 to 0.26 ppbv yr−1, albeit none of these changes were found to be statistically significant trends. A seasonal trend analysis showed above-average increases in ozone during the spring and early summer periods for both Arctic (Alert, Zeppelinfjellet) and Antarctic (McMurdo, Neumayer, South Pole) sites. In contrast, at Barrow, springtime ozone has been declining. All coastal stations experience springtime episodes with rapid depletion of ozone in the boundary layer, attributable to photochemically catalyzed ozone depletion from halogen chemistry. This effect is most obvious at Barrow, followed by Alert. Springtime depletion episodes are less pronounced at Antarctic stations. At South Pole, during the Antarctic spring and summer, photochemical ozone production yields frequent episodes with enhanced surface ozone. Other Antarctic stations show similar, though less frequent spring and summertime periods with enhanced ozone. The Antarctic data provide evidence that austral spring and summertime ozone production in Antarctica is widespread, respectively, affects all stations at least through transport events. This ozone production contributes to a several ppbv enhancement in the annual mean ozone over the Antarctic plateau; however, it is not the determining process in the Antarctic seasonal ozone cycle. Although Summit and South Pole have many similarities in their environmental conditions, this ozone production does not appear to be of equal importance at Summit. Amplitudes of diurnal, summertime ozone cycles at these polar sites are weaker than at lower latitude locations. Amplitudes of seasonal ozone changes are larger in the Southern Hemisphere (by ∼5 ppbv), most likely due to less summertime photochemical ozone loss and more transport of ozone-rich air to the Arctic during the NH spring and summer months.  相似文献

Continuous measurements of ozone vertical profiles, OVP, in the low troposphere (around 500–2400 m) using an unattended commercial ozone profiler DIAL, were conducted during June–July 2004 in Segovia, SG, a small city in the upper plateau located close to the foothills of the Guadarrama mountain range, Guadarrama, in the Central Massif. The data obtained over almost 37 complete days have enabled us to characterise the ozone vertical exchange, describe the phenomenology of the main ozone peaks, OP, recorded in the city and their relationship with ozone transport/formation from the gas precursor emissions of the greater Madrid area across Guadarrama. To achieve the last objective concurrent measurements of ground-level ozone in SG and a representative monitoring station upwind from Guadarrama, Buitrago de Lozoya, BL, have been used. 72.2% of the concurrent maximum diurnal ozone peaks exceeding the 95 percentile hourly value in SG (OPSG) and BL (OPBL) were linked to ozone transport and formation from the greater Madrid area towards Guadarrama. An estimate of the contribution of the greater Madrid area on OPSG yielded 28 μg m−3.The most prominent ozone vertical stratification was linked to the mixing height, MH, and a frequent nocturnal stable layer formed, NSL. Three small ozone enriched-layers were identified at mean heights of 500, 700 and 1000 m, respectively. Ozone tended to decline versus altitude. The hourly patterns of the three layers showed two peak occurrences of similar amplitude in the early morning, 7–8 h, and mid-afternoon, 14–16 h. A minimum was also observed during daytime, 10–11 h, its origin being attributed to a dilution process induced by the “chimney effect” caused by the slopes heating during this period. The comparison between OPSG, and the maximum diurnal ozone peaks in the first layer, OL1P, showed a satisfactory relationship, correlation coefficient, r, of the linear fit 0.77, and comparable mean values, 127 and 130 μg m−3, respectively, revealing the presence of an uniform ozone vertical distribution in the 500 m atmospheric layer above ground level during mid-afternoon.  相似文献

Sensitivity of ozone (O3) concentrations in the Mexico City area to diurnal variations of surface air pollutant emissions is investigated using the WRF/Chem model. Our analysis shows that diurnal variations of nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions play an important role in controlling the O3 concentrations in the Mexico City area. The contributions of NOx and VOC emissions to daytime O3 concentrations are very sensitive to the morning emissions of NOx and VOCs. Increase in morning NOx emissions leads to decrease in daytime O3 concentrations as well as the afternoon O3 maximum, while increase in morning VOC emissions tends to increase in O3 concentrations in late morning and early afternoon, indicating that O3 production in Mexico City is under VOC-limited regime. It is also found that the nighttime O3 is independent of VOCs, but is sensitive to NOx. The emissions of VOCs during other periods (early morning, evening, and night) have only small impacts on O3 concentrations, while the emissions of NOx have important impacts on O3 concentrations in the evening and the early morning. This study suggests that shifting emission pattern, while keeping the total emissions unchanged, has important impacts on air quality. For example, delaying the morning emission peak from 8 am to 10 am significantly reduced the morning peaks of NOx and VOCs, as well as the afternoon O3 maxima. It suggests that without reduction of total emission, the daytime O3 concentrations can be significantly reduced by changing the diurnal variations of the emissions of O3 precursors.  相似文献

Ozone was measured in six- and NOx in five sampling periods in 1996–97, mostly during summer, at a 1070 m altitude site in northern Peloponnese. Mean values in each sampling period ranged from 43–48 ppb exceeding the European Union 24 h plant protection standard. The background ozone concentration of 43 ppb derived from the correlation of ozone with NOx also exceeded the EU plant protection standard. Ozone exhibited maxima in the afternoon and minima during the night; in certain 24–48 h periods, however, the ozone concentrations remained practically constant; in these short periods air mass back trajectories indicated air masses which originated in north Africa. NOx concentrations had maximum of 24 h around noon. Their mean concentrations ranged from 0.5–0.7 ppb, smaller than respective concentrations in north-central Europe.  相似文献

In the Aguere Valley (in the oceanic boundary layer at Tenerife, 28°N, 16°W, 580 m a.s.l.) the ozone levels were monitored for ambient air quality assessment. Although precursors are emitted in this area, the strong correlation between ozone levels and wind velocity indicates that ozone is transported into the valley from the ocean. The inland ozone supply along the valley is induced by an orographic channelling effect of the northern oceanic air masses. The highest ozone concentrations are mostly recorded during the nocturnal stage under the influence of fresh oceanic air masses, and during high wind speed events. The seasonal cycle is characterised by elevated ozone mixing ratios in the spring (nighttime levels >45 ppbv) and low mixing ratios in the summer (nighttime levels in the range 20–35 ppbv). Back-trajectory analysis shows that the ozone monitored in the Aguere Valley is associated with long-range transport processes. High ozone events in the spring are associated with transport from upper tropospheric levels, both over the North Atlantic-high latitudes (>45°N) and Europe. This downward transport was observed in the western edge of upper tropospheric cyclones, which suggests that the upper tropospheric/low stratospheric ozone sources play a significant role. In summer, ozone is mainly transported from the North Atlantic-high latitudes (>45°N) and from mid- to low-tropospheric levels. In autumn and winter, the high ozone concentrations are transported from sources located a few km above the North Atlantic-high latitudes (>45°N) and over Europe. The Central-North Atlantic (<45°N) and North Africa are not significant sources of ozone. The high spring and lower summer ozone events in the Aguere Valley agree with other North Atlantic ozone observation in the oceanic boundary layer. However, this behaviour contrasts with the high ozone events frequently recorded at Izaña BAPMoN station (located in the free troposphere in Tenerife) during the summer, which have been attributed in the literature to downward transport from upper levels. An intensification of the inversion layer that separates the oceanic boundary layer of the free troposphere during the summer in Canary Islands is interpreted as the cause of this different behaviour between ozone in the Aguere Valley and Izaña BAPMoN station.  相似文献

Multi-year hourly measurements of PM2.5 elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) from a site in the South Bronx, New York were used to examine diurnal, day of week and seasonal patterns. The hourly carbon measurements also provided temporally resolved information on sporadic EC spikes observed predominantly in winter. Furthermore, hourly EC and OC data were used to provide information on secondary organic aerosol formation. Average monthly EC concentrations ranged from 0.5 to 1.4 μg m?3 with peak hourly values of several μg m?3 typically observed from November to March. Mean EC concentrations were lower on weekends (approximately 27% lower on Saturday and 38% lower on Sunday) than on weekdays (Monday to Friday). The weekday/weekend difference was more pronounced during summer months and less noticeable during winter. Throughout the year EC exhibited a similar diurnal pattern to NOx showing a pronounced peak during the morning commute period (7–10 AM EST). These patterns suggest that EC was impacted by local mobile emissions and in addition by emissions from space heating sources during winter months. Although EC was highly correlated with black carbon (BC) there was a pronounced seasonal BC/EC gradient with summer BC concentrations approximately a factor of 2 higher than EC. Average monthly OC concentrations ranged from 1.0 to 4.1 μg m?3 with maximum hourly concentrations of 7–11 μg m?3 predominantly in summer or winter months. OC concentrations generally correlated with PM2.5 total mass and aerosol sulfate and with NOx during winter months. OC showed no particular day of week pattern. The OC diurnal pattern was typically different than EC except in winter when OC tracked EC and NOx indicating local primary emissions contributed significantly to OC during winter at the urban location. On average secondary organic aerosol was estimated to account for 40–50% of OC during winter and up to 63–73% during summer months.  相似文献

Ambient biogenic hydrocarbons were monitored in a forested site in Northern Greece during the summer of 1997 as part of the AEROBIC campaign. Significant concentrations of isoprene were observed, consistent with enclosure measurements presented in the previous paper (Harrison et al., 2001, Atmospheric Environment 35, 4687–4698). In addition, significant concentrations of monoterpenes were observed (nighttime maximum of 2.9 ppbv for total monoterpene concentration). Isoprene and the monoterpenes exhibited pronounced, but different, diurnal cycles which are interpreted via enclosure and OH measurements. The combination of relatively high emission rates at a time when OH concentrations are significantly lower leads to peak isoprene concentrations (∼3.0 ppbv) during the late evening. The temporal behaviour of the biogenic hydrocarbons is used to interpret the radical chemistry at the site and may indicate the presence of high (∼1×106 cm−3) nighttime concentrations of the OH radical. Biogenic hydrocarbon measurements were supported by a range of organic and inorganic measurements which are also presented in this paper.  相似文献

Concentrations of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, propionaldehyde and butyraldehyde were measured in a semi-urban coastal site in the Gulf of Campeche, Mexico, during the winter, summer and autumn seasons. Measurements were carried out from 10 February 2004 to 16 November 2004. Carbonyl compound levels showed pronounced diurnal and seasonal variations. Maximum concentrations occurred between 13:00 h and 16:00 h, when vehicular traffic and photochemical activity were intense, and during the summer (when there was greater solar radiation). Only acetone during the first campaign (winter) did not correlate with temperature; it showed an inverse diurnal pattern, with higher concentrations during the night, probably due to a local and temporal source. The low concentrations of the main carbonyls found in this study, compared with the values reported for other urban areas, seem to indicate that air quality is still satisfactory in Carmen City.  相似文献

Ozone and related trace gases (CO, NOx, and SO2) were measured from June 1999 to July 2000 at a rural site in the Yangtze Delta of China, a region of intensive anthropogenic activity. Elevated ozone levels were frequently observed during the study period, with the highest frequency in late spring and early summer. Over a 1 yr period, 21 d were found to have ozone concentrations exceeding the new US 8-h 80 ppb health standard. Calculation of the “SUM06” exposure index also shows relatively high (>15 ppm h) values for each season except winter. At these levels ozone may have adverse effects on human health as well as agricultural crops. Analysis of meteorological data shows that the high ozone days were associated with large-scale stagnation, intense solar radiation, and minimum rainfall. Large-scale back trajectories indicate a slow-moving/re-circulating airmass during the episodic days. Examination of chemical data shows that the observed daytime high ozone concentrations were due to downward mixing of ozone-rich air, in situ photochemical formation, and in some cases, advection to the site of aged plumes. The very high CO levels (and high CO to NOx ratios) were found to coincide with many of the ozone episodes, suggesting a contribution from sources of emission involving incomplete combustion. It is suggested that the burning of biomass (e.g., biofeuls and crop residues) may be an important source for the observed high CO and O3 values.  相似文献
