An Eulerian diffusion model coupled with a refined mass consistent wind model is developed for the operational forecasting of pollution distribution in complex terrain. The model is evaluated for a city situated in complex terrain. The study is carried out for a 20×20 km2 area surrounding Linz, one of the industrial cities of Austria. The models are initialized with routinely measured meteorological parameters and topology information derived from the Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Four case studies, representative for major pollution episodes, are presented for model evaluation. The case studies include presence of a thermally induced wind system, presence of cold front an easterly southeasterly flow and a westerly–northwesterly flow. In presence of thermally induced wind systems, the flow field is most complex and existence of a shallow mixed layer with residual layer aloft enhances the pollution levels inside the city. Second case is used to study the development of pollution distribution inside the city in presence of low-level inversions and associated with low surface wind speeds. The low wind speeds in the surface layer lead to less mechanical generation of turbulence and lateral transport. The case studies of easterly and westerly flow fields are carried out to assess the capability of model under most frequently observed meteorological situations. The model is able to reproduce the pollution distribution near the slopes. There were over prediction inside the city in presence of thermally induced wind systems and is attributed to inadequate model physics during convective case. The present model setup is found to be a useful tool for the routine forecasting of pollution and could also be tested for other complex terrains.  相似文献

The paper describes a field study focused on the dispersion of a traffic-related pollutant within an area close to a busy intersection between two street canyons in Central London. Simultaneous measurements of airflow, traffic flow and carbon monoxide concentrations ([CO]) are used to explore the causes of spatial variability in [CO] over a full range of background wind directions. Depending on the roof-top wind direction, evidence of both flow channelling and recirculation regimes were identified from data collected within the main canyon and the intersection. However, at the intersection, the merging of channelled flows from the canyons increased the flow complexity and turbulence intensity. These features, coupled with the close proximity of nearby queuing traffic in several directions, led to the highest overall time-average measured [CO] occurring at the intersection. Within the main street canyon, the data supported the presence of a helical flow regime for oblique roof-top flows, leading to increased [CO] on the canyon leeward side. Predominant wind directions led to some locations having significantly higher diurnal average [CO] due to being mostly on the canyon leeward side during the study period. For all locations, small changes in the background wind direction could cause large changes in the in-street mean wind angle and local turbulence intensity, implying that dispersion mechanisms would be highly sensitive to small changes in above roof flows. During peak traffic flow periods, concentrations within parallel side streets were approximately four times lower than within the main canyon and intersection which has implications for controlling personal exposure. Overall, the results illustrate that pollutant concentrations can be highly spatially variable over even short distances within complex urban geometries, and that synoptic wind patterns, traffic queue location and building topologies all play a role in determining where pollutant hot spots occur.  相似文献

The mesoscale meteorological model TVM, coupled to a photochemical/transport module in which different chemical mechanisms (RACM, EMEP) are implemented, has been evaluated. Field measurements and numerical results are used to determine the impact of the mesoscale flows on the photochemical smog episodes observed in the Greater Madrid Area for two selected days, characterised by the presence of a thermal low-pressure system over the Iberian Peninsula. During the 14 July 1992, the synoptic flow from the southeast favoured the transport of the precursors to the Guadarrama mountain range, where high concentrations of ozone were registered, exceeding the population information threshold. On the 15 July 1995, the synoptic wind from the northwest interacted with the local thermally driven flows, pushing the pollutants far away from the metropolitan area with the result that high ozone concentrations were measured to the east-southeast of the city.  相似文献

Each summer period extremely high ozone levels are registered at the rural background station of Lamas d'Olo, located in the Northeast of Portugal. In average, 30% of the total alert threshold registered in Portugal is detected at this site. The main purpose of this study is to characterize the atmospheric conditions that lead to the ozone-rich episodes at this site. Synoptic patterns anomalies and back trajectories cluster analysis were performed, for the period between 2004 and 2007, considering 76 days when ozone maximum hourly concentrations were above 200 μg m?3. The obtained atmospheric anomaly fields suggested that a positive temperature anomaly is visible above the Iberian Peninsula. A strong wind flow pattern from NE is observable in the North of Portugal and Galicia, in Spain. These two features may lead to an enhancement of the photochemical production and to the transport of pollutants from Spain to Portugal. In addition, the 3D mean back trajectories associated to the ozone episode days were analysed. A clustering method has been applied to the obtained back trajectories. Four main clusters of ozone-rich episodes were identified, with different frequencies of occurrence: north-westerly flows (11%); north-easterly flows (45%), southern flow (4%) and westerly flows (40%). Both analyses highlight the NE flow as a dominant pattern over the North of Portugal during summer. The analysis of the ozone concentrations for each selected cluster indicates that this northeast circulation pattern, together with the southern flow, are responsible for the highest ozone peak episodes. This also suggests that long-range transport of atmospheric pollutants is the main contributor to the ozone levels registered at Lamas d'Olo. This is also highlighted by the correlation of the ozone time-series with the meteorological parameters analysed in the frequency domain.  相似文献

Measurements of wind movements have been made within and above a forest canopy located near a 0.5 km2 clearing. They showed the existence of complex wind systems characterized by strong horizontal jets of air and large vertical velocities beneath the canopy during unstable atmospheric conditions. Under stable situations wind flows seemed to be less complex with both horizontal and vertical winds being greater above the canopy than below.  相似文献

Abstract

The main results of an experimental study focusing on the formation and transport of photochemical pollution in the Madrid air basin are presented. This southern European, heavily populated urban area is located on an elevated plateau at a height of 700 m, near a mountain range with maximum heights of around 2,400 m. Daily and seasonal cycles of ozone were documented during a one-year survey at three semi-rural sites located 30 km away from the urban center. Maximum hourly values of up to 140 ppb were measured, and the ozone generated within the urban plume on polluted days (when values exceeded 90 ppb) has been estimated at around 40-50 ppb.A meteorological characterization of these smoggy days pointed out the influence of thermally induced local wind flows on the concentration daily cycles at the measuring sites, denoting a preferred advection of the urban plume. Moreover, during intensive summer field campaigns, the use of meteorological and ozone sondes, as well as an instrumented aircraft, revealed some features about the horizontal and vertical distribution of the polluted air masses, as well as their evolution within the planetary boundary layer. Ozone plumes have been detected up to 100 km away from the city, usually mixed in a layer that reaches a height of 1,000-1,500 m in the afternoon. On some occasions, ozone-enriched layers have been detected as high as 4,000 m during morning hours, suggesting possible tropospheric injection induced by topographydriven flows or convective mesoscale systems that are usually present in the center of the Iberian Peninsula in the summer.  相似文献

The mechanism of pollutant dispersion in idealized city models is investigated numerically by the introduction of a uniformly distributed pollutant source at street pedestrian level. We first study three short city forms with a single main street or two crossing streets, characterized by street length/street height ratios of L/H = 6 or 7 and a street height/street width ratio of H/W = 1, including a sharp-edged round city model, a smooth-edged round city model, and a sharp-edged square city model. For short city models with a single street and a parallel approaching wind, pollutant dilution mainly depends on the horizontal flow rate which decreases along the street. This decreasing rate is smallest for the smooth-edged round city model, which results in the lowest street concentrations. For city models with two crossing streets and the approaching wind parallel to the main street, the differences in overall city form result in different dispersion processes. For a sharp-edged round city model with two crossing streets, an approaching wind slightly non-parallel to the main street generates a lower pollutant concentration in the entire street volume. We also studied a sharp-edged round city model with one narrow street (L/H = 6; H/W = 6.7), finding that the uniformly distributed pollutants are transported from two street entries to the city centre, and are then removed out across the street roof. In contrast to the short city models we studied a single-street sharp-edged long rectangular city model (L/H = 21.7; H/W = 1) in which the horizontal flow rate remained nearly constant in a region far from the two entries. Within this region the turbulence across the street roof contributed more to the pollutant removal than vertical mean flows.  相似文献

This paper presents three aspects of air pollution in the city of Buenos Aires (Argentina). First, we describe the main features of air pollution climatology in the city: the characteristics of wind flow, atmospheric stability and mixing heights. Then, we present the results of the application of DAUMOD and ISCST3 atmospheric dispersion models to calculate spatial and temporal distributions of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides background concentrations. Finally, we present the main features of carbon monoxide concentrations observed in a narrow street canyon located downtown.  相似文献

Ozone measurements made from 5 sites in Hong Kong have been analyzed, including those from one upwind, one downwind, and three urban locales. The data are analyzed in terms of the seasonal and diurnal trends. A subset of data in autumn is further analyzed to study the relationship between the ozone spatial pattern and wind flow as well as other meteorological parameters. The results show that averaged ozone levels at most sites exhibit maxima in autumn, which appears to be a unique feature for eastern Asia. On average the daily maximum 1-h concentrations are found to be higher in the western (normally downwind) site than those on the eastern side and in urban areas. Examination of surface wind patterns and other meteorological parameters suggest that elevated ozone concentrations on the western side occur during the days with intense solar radiation, light winds, and in the presence of a unique wind circulation. The wind reversal in the western parts under the “convergence” flow is believed to be an important cause of the high-ozone events observed there. Such wind flow may re-circulate/transport nearby urban plumes (in this case the Hong Kong–Shenzhen urban complex). Examination of chemical data from the western site has shown that averaged afternoon SO2 to NOx ratios on days with wind reversal are larger than those of typical urban Hong Kong and that a significant SO2 enhancement was clearly indicated on several occasions. The SO2 enhancement may be interpreted as being the evidence to suggest the contribution of regional sources and/or Hong Kong’s power plants (both containing high SO2). A case study has shown that when moderately strong northwesterly wind prevails, elevated ozone and SO2 can be transported to western Hong Kong from the inner Pearl Delta region. This study has also indicated that under the impact of ENE winds the eastern side of Hong Kong is not frequently affected by the re-circulating ozone plumes present in the western side.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The Nested Grid Model (NGM) is a primitive-equation meteorological model that is routinely exercised over North America for forecasting purposes by the National Meteorological Center. While prognostic meteorological models are being increasingly used to drive air quality models, their use in conducting annual simulations requires significant resources. NGM estimates of wind fields and other meteorological variables provide an attractive alternative since they are typically archived and readily available for an entire year. Preliminary evaluation of NGM winds during the summer of 1992 for application to the region surrounding the Grand Canyon National Park showed serious shortcomings. The NGM winds along the borders between California, Arizona and Mexico tend to be northwesterly with a speed of about 6 m/sec, while the observed flow is predominantly southerly at about 2-5 m/sec. The mesoscale effect of a thermal low pressure area over the highly heated Southern California and western Arizona deserts does not appear to be represented by the NGM because of its coarse resolution and the use of sparse observations in that region. Tracer simulations and statistical evaluation against special high resolution observations of winds in the southwest United States clearly demonstrate the northwest bias in NGM winds and its adverse effect on predictions of an air quality model. The “enhanced” NGM winds, in which selected wind observations are incorporated in the NGM winds using a diagnostic meteorological model provide additional confirmation on the primary cause of the northwest bias. This study has demonstrated that in situations where limited resources prevent the use of prognostic meteorological models, previously archived coarse resolution wind fields in which additional observations are incorporated to correct known biases provide an attractive option.  相似文献

Wind conditions in urban environments are important for a number of reasons. They can serve to transport air pollutants out of the urban environment and to moderate urban microclimatic conditions if satisfactory, yet can compromise pedestrian comfort and safety if not. We aim to study experimentally and numerically the effects of urban morphology (e.g., overall city form (skyline), street orientation, and street configuration) on wind conditions in cities. This report considers our initial investigations of two idealized city forms that are coincidentally similar to ancient Roman cities that were organized on one or two primary streets – a main north–south street, the cardus maximus, and a secondary east–west street, the decumanus maximus – and contained within a well-defined perimeter. We first consider round and square city models with one main street set parallel to the approaching wind and a secondary street producing an intersection at city centre. Not surprisingly, wind conditions in the two city models are dissimilar due to their shape differences. We then consider a long rectangular city model with a fully developed steady flow region along the main street. If the main street of the round city model is narrow, the parallel approaching wind cannot blow through the entire street and a penetrating inflow exists at the leeward opening. For the round city model with two crossing streets, a slightly non-parallel wind to the main street generates a stronger wind level in the entire street volume.  相似文献

Tethered-sonde measurements of atmospheric profiles were performed at Urumuqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, from 29 December 2008 to 14 January 2009. The data were used to examine the boundary layer structure during this severe air pollution period. Diurnal evolution of local wind flow near Urumqi was simulated using the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University-National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Mesoscale Model (MM5). Measurements from operational radiosonde data showed that a southeasterly elevated low-level jet often intruded upon Urumqi through the middle Tianshan Mountain pass to the south of the city. The tethered-sonde measurements showed that calm and northwesterly winds prevailed near the surface in Urumqi, whereas the southeasterly winds of relatively higher speed were dominant above approximately 400 m. Both temperature inversion and humidity inversion frequently occured during day and nighttime. Temperature inversion intensity could sharply rise as the stronger elevated southeasterly gale (ESEG) happened. Model simulations showed that the winds near the surface around Urumqi remained calm during nighttime and developed toward the mountains during daytime. As cool airflow in the basin confronted the southeasterly winds from the pass in the lower layer, they formed a convergence line around Urumqi city, which was not favor for dilution of air pollutants.  相似文献

The use of windbreaks to reduce wind-blown coal dust at the POSCO Kwang-Yang open storage yards was studied using wind simulations on a scale model of the yards. Based on these simulation results, a full-scale wind fence was constructed on two sides of the yard. Here, we present results on the wind behavior both for the real yard and for the simulation results that guided its construction. Wind-tunnel simulations were used to study the effect of a porous wind fence of porosity ε=30% on the surface pressure and shear stress on coal piles using a 1/1200 model of the POSCO Kwang-Yang open storage yards. In addition, the shelter effects found in the model system were verified in field measurements on the full-scale system. The storage yard model was fully embedded in an atmospheric surface boundary layer over open terrain. The fence and coal pile model had the same height (12.2 mm) and Reynolds number (Re=1.6×104, based on the model height). The mean and fluctuating surface-pressure distributions on the coal piles, which are closely related to the dust emission from the surface, were measured for several directions of the oncoming wind. The wind directions pertinent to the study were determined by statistical analysis of seasonal wind data over the storage yard. A porous wind fence of porosity ε=30% was found to be useful for reducing the wind speed without the formation of a recirculating bubble behind the fence. In addition, the fence caught the wind-borne particles when it was located behind the coal piles. The wind fence reduced the pressure fluctuations and surface shear stress on the coal piles to less than half of the levels observed in the no fence case. To verify the effectiveness of the porous wind fence installed around the Kwang-Yang open storage yard, the local wind speed and the concentration of suspended particles were measured directly. Full-scale porous fences installed around the Kwang-Yang open storage yard greatly decreased the turbulence intensity of the wind over the coal piles and reduced the total suspension particles by 70–80%.  相似文献

The effect of different synoptic environments and the associated meteorological conditions on the transport of CO to a coastal station located at the southeastern tip of Hong Kong are examined. Based on the 1994 data, we found that the appearance of a Siberia high pressure, the passage of a cold front, the passage of a trough, and the existence of a tropical cyclone to the east to southeast of Hong Kong frequently gave rise to continental outflow from a northeasterly to a northwesterly direction. This continental airstream, which is highly contaminated with anthropogenic air pollutants, raised the CO concentration at the station to a level significantly above the oceanic value (measured to be around 81 pbbv under persistent maritime flow conditions). We also identified 20 high CO episodes in which the CO concentration of at least two consecutive hourly means in a given month exceeded two standard deviations from the monthly mean. All these episodes were directly associated with one of the above four types of synoptic environments with the winds being moderate to light northwesterly to northeasterly.  相似文献

Results from an experimental campaign at the coastline of the Saronic Gulf during the summer of 1992 are presented. The frontal intensity and the rotation of the wind hodograph at the shoreline during sea-breeze case:; are examined under different background flow conditions. The frontal intensity classification is based on the vertical velocities induced, as measured by a high resolution acoustic sounder. Three representative cases are presented. Conclusions are based on the analysis of all observed sea-breeze flows. Background off-shore or shore-parallel flows are more probable to create a strong or weak front, respectively. The development of frontal characteristics under background on-shore flow is attributed to off shore land features. The wind hodograph rotation is shown to be associated to the initial direction of the sea breeze, which is determined by the background flow direction. When the background flow possesses a westerly component the hodograph shows anticlockwise rotation, while an easterly background component causes the wind vector rotation to be clockwise.  相似文献

Comparisons are presented of the predictions of the atmospheric dispersion modelling system (ADMS) and wind tunnel data for plume dispersion from chemical warehouse fires. The focus of the comparisons is dispersion from structurally intact buildings with open roofs and dispersion of plumes flush with the ground without obstacles, however, dispersion from building shells and doors is also considered. Both buoyancy driven and momentum driven flows are treated, although emphasis is on buoyancy driven flows as these are generally more likely to occur in warehouse fires. The study shows that the ADMS building module is able to reproduce many of the features of dispersion observed in the wind tunnel. These include a recirculating region behind the building in which material may be trapped, a main wake which brings material down towards the surface, and appropriate sensitivity to the buoyancy and momentum of the emitted material, and the location of sources on the building roof. The comparisons suggest that the ADMS building model can be used to predict dispersion from the stages of fire development studied. The precise level of agreement depends (but not in a systematic way) on the buoyancy flux parameter FB, the momentum flux parameter FM and the number of roof lights. There are some significant differences between the wind tunnel boundary layer and the simulated atmospheric boundary layer in ADMS which have to be considered when making wind tunnel model comparisons. These relate mainly to the near surface where the wind tunnel underestimates turbulent velocities, the boundary layer height which in the wind tunnel corresponds to an atmospheric boundary layer depth of 82.5 m (atmospheric boundary layers are frequently an order of magnitude deeper), and the boundary layer top where the ADMS boundary layer is capped by an inversion and has low turbulence levels whereas the wind tunnel boundary layer has higher levels of turbulence and no capping inversion.  相似文献

The body of information presented in this paper is directed to scientists working in atmospheric dispersion research and model development. Two years of field measurements in the coastal area of Bilbao in northern Spain show that the diffusion behavior in this complex terrain can be classified into several well defined patterns, which correspond to certain meteorological conditions. The approach taken has been the systematic use of SO2 remote sensors (COSPEC) and ground level monitors in moving platforms which are used to follow and document the flow of the air mass. Results to date show that complex reentry cycles can occur and that synoptically different flows may be indistinguishable by wind sensors at ground level (affected by channeling), and yet result in totally different observed pollution levels by a fixed monitoring network (affected by topographical effects). These results are being used to parameterize the cause-effect relationships and guide the modeling efforts in this area of complex terrain.  相似文献

In this paper we address two important aspects of micro-scale urban airflow model evaluation: (a) the identification of key flow features as dictated by the physics of the problem and as captured by the simulations, and (b) the comparison of important model output parameters (mean flows and fluctuations) with experimental data. A series of mesh-adaptive large eddy simulations (LES) was carried out for the study of air flows within two intersecting street canyons with varying building configurations. The novelty of the approach lies in the combination of LES with mesh adaptivity, which allows a variable-filter length and the implementation of an anisotropic eddy-viscosity model. Both coarse and fine-mesh simulations were carried out, using single and parallel-processor systems respectively. The simulations showed clearly that the expected flow patterns such as the street canyon recirculation and the street-mouth vortices, as well as the exchange of air flow at the street intersections, can readily be captured by the mesh-adaptive LES.In addition, the detailed comparisons of mean flows and fluctuations of the resolved velocity field with the measured data showed that the simulation results agreed well with the patterns and trends of the wind tunnel measurements. In most cases the finer-mesh simulations improved considerably the accuracy of the mean flows, especially for the symmetrical configuration. The improvement in the predicted fluctuations was less obvious, with several detector locations underpredicting the measured values, although the overall comparison was also satisfactory. The typical errors for the mean flows for all three building configurations were less than 30%, whilst for the velocity fluctuations less that 40%. Both the simulated means flows and turbulence levels were generally more accurate in the streets parallel to the wind (streamwise direction) than in the streets normal to the wind.  相似文献
