The ecological effects of heavy metals in contaminated sediments are more determined by the chemical form and reactivity than by the level of accumulation. Dredging of anoxic sediments and disposal on land is attended by changes of redox conditions. Under oxidizing conditions some controlling solid compounds may change gradually thus changing the solubility of certain metals.

Chemical extraction experiments for estimating characteristic association forms of heavy metals in anoxic sediments were carried out, both under presence and absence of air during the analytical procedure. Drying of the sediment decreases the proportion of the sulfidic metal fractions to a stronger degree, and oxidized Cd and Zn are found in the most available, exchangeable fraction.

With respect to long‐term effects acidification of poorly buffered sludges after disposal on land is probably the most important factor affecting metal associations and mobility. For many metal examples a linear relationship has been found between decreasing pH values and increasing dissolved metal concentrations. To quantify these relationships and for better comparison of samples a simple test procedure is proposed which is based on pH differences before and after addition of acid.  相似文献

Different dosages of ferrous chloride and ferric chloride were added to digestors separately, and the volumes of methane and hydrogen sulphide contained in the digestor gas (biogas) were monitored. It was noted that the effects of adding of 16, 18 and 32 kg ferrous chloride/ tonne volatile solids, and 16 and 18 kg ferric chloride/tonne volatile solids were similarly effective in controlling the hydrogen sulphide levels.

According to an average amount of undigested sludge (primary sludge mixed with surplus activated sludge) of 41 tonne volatile solids produced each day during the sewage treatment process in Shatin sewage treatment works, and the required dosage of 16 kg ferric chloride/ tonne volatile solids, the amount of iron salts required should be 656 kg/day or 3.3 mg/L for the actual application, based on an average sewage flow of 200,000 m3/day.  相似文献

The uptake of NH 4 + and urea by Chordaria flagelliformis was measured in a perturbed system (batch mode) and in an apparent steady-state system (continuous mode). The maximum uptake rates (Vmax) measured in short-term depletion experiments greatly exceeded those determined under a steady nutrient supply. C. flagelliformis briefly exposed to high nutrient concentrations has an impressive capacity for rapid uptake (high Vmax)_which is uncoupled from growth. In contrast, under continous, homogenous low N concentrations the alga appears well equipped (low half-saturation constant, Km) to take up the available N. The results show that previous work based on batch mode uptake experiments probably overestimated the N requirements for the growth of many seaweeds.  相似文献

Selenium was determined from 25 topsoils and 25 plants in the semi-arid Central Spain where large extents of soils are developed on evaporitic materials. Some species of vegetation associated with them are of the genera Astragalus, Salsola, Mercurialis, Phlomis, Thymus and Atriplex. Total selenium in soils was determined and its bioavailability assessed by chemical sequential fractionation. Se content in soils was adequate (in the range 0.17–0.39 mg kg−1) or large (in the range 0.50–4.38 mg kg−1) and appeared in highly and/or potentially available forms. Several plant species showed high Se levels (in the range 5–14.3 mg kg−1), which can be a potential risk of toxicity to animals. Data obtained from the study area can be used as a guide to the range of values in soils and plants of the European Mediterranean area that are relatively unpolluted from industrial sources, allowing comparison with more polluted areas.  相似文献

1. For water pollution control purposes, the concentration-addition model for describing the joint effects of mixtures of toxicants on aquatic organisms is appropriate; in this model the contribution of each component in the mixture is expressed as a proportion of the aqueous concentration producing a given response in a given time (e.g. p 96-h LC50).

2. Examination of available data using this model shows that for mixtures of toxicants found in sewage and industrial effluents, the joint acutely-lethal toxicity to fish and other aquatic organisms is close to that predicted, assuming simple addition of the proportional contribution from each toxicant. The observed median value for the joint effect of these toxicants on fish is 0.95 of that predicted, and the corresponding collective value for sewage effluents, river waters, and a few industrial wastes, based on the toxicity of their constituents, is 0.85, while that for pesticides is 1.3.

3. The less-than-predicted effect of commonly-occurring toxicants in some mixtures may be partly attributable to small fractions of their respective LC50 values having a less-than-additional effect. However, recent research has shown that for some organic chemicals which have a common quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR), their joint action as determined by acute toxicity is additive at all concentrations.

4. The few (unpublished) data available for the long-term lethal joint effect on fish of toxicants in mixtures suggest that they may be markedly more than additive, a phenomenon that needs confirmation and further investigation.

5. In the few studies on the sub-lethal effects on fish (eg growth), the joint effect of toxicants has been consistently less-than-additive which suggests that as concentrations of toxicants are reduced towards the levels of no effect, their potential for addition is also reduced. There appear to be no marked and consistent differences between the response of different species to mixtures of toxicants.

6. Field studies have shown that reasonably accurate toxicity predictions based on chemical analysis can be made if the waters which are polluted are acutely lethal to fish, and that a fish population of some kind can exist where the median 2 p t LCSOs (rainbow trout) is < 0.2. It is not known whether this condition is equivalent to a C p NOEC of 4.0 (ie the sum of the individual fractions of the NOEC for the species present), or to a NOEC of < 1.0 for each individual toxicant (i.e. fractions of the NOEC are not summed).

7. In general, the joint effect of the common toxicants on lethal and sub-lethal responses of fish is not explained by variations in the uptake of the individual toxicants concerned; this may not apply for those chemicals with a common QSAR, although there is little experimental evidence in this field.

8. There is an immediate need for more empirical studies on the joint effect of mixtures of toxic units of individual components, and the relation between long- and short-term lethal and non-lethal joint effects. This applies to mixtures of commonly occurring toxicants as well as to mixtures of organic chemicals with a common QSAR. The data obtained should be reinforced by studies on the mechanisms of interaction of toxicants. More field studies which relate water quality to the structure and productivity of fish populations are also required, involving direct measurements of fractional toxicity of the river water wherever possible.

The concentration-addition model appears to be adequate to describe the joint effect of commonly-occurring constituents of sewage and industrial wastes, and for tentative predictions of the joint effect on fish populations of toxicants present at concentrations higher than the EIFAC recommended values. However, concentrations lower than the EIFAC recommended values may make an increasingly lesser contribution to the toxicity of mixtures of toxicants and there may be a need to adjust the tentative water quality criteria downwards where two or more toxicants are present at concentrations close to these values. For toxicants with a common QSAR, their additive joint action may necessitate the setting of water quality criteriafor this group as a whole and not on the basis of individual compounds. However, too little is known of their precise joint action where the combined concentration produces a sub-lethal response.  相似文献

Chlorophyll, protein, DNA and RNA concentrations in cultures ofCyclotella nana (Hustedt) andDunaliella tertiolecta (Butcher) were higher in blue light and lower in green light than in white light of the same intensity. Total carotenoid concentrations were highest in green light. Total pigment concentrations were highest in cells grown in blue light, lowest in those from green light. The relative changes in pigment concentrations associated with differences in spectral composition of the radiation are comparable to those often observed in phytoplankton from various depths in stratified natural water. Light adaptation in algae as a response to light quality is suggested. The chemical composition of plankton algae can be expected to vary considerably with depth.  相似文献

The photodegradation of aqueous solutions containing 0.2 mM methyl parathion has been studied through the optimization of the [H2O2]/[Fe3+] ratio in a Fe3+/H2O2/UV-C flow system of 1.3 L capacity. The decay kinetics and TOC abatement have been analyzed for the experiments performed at pH 3.0 and room temperature. All experiments lead to the total methyl parathion destruction after a few minutes, following a pseudo-first-order decay kinetics. Total mineralization can be reached after 120 min at the optimum ratio found, due to the synergistic effect of the very oxidizing hydroxyl radical (·OH) produced via the Fenton reagent and the effective photodecarboxylation at 253.7 nm.  相似文献

To explore the effect of traffic emissions on air quality within street canyon, the wind flow and pollutant dispersion distribution in urban street canyons of different H/W, building gap and wind direction are studied and discussed by 3D computational fluid dynamics simulations. The largest PM2.5 concentrations are 46.4, 37.5, 28.4 µg/m3 when x = ? 88, ? 19.3, ? 19.3 m in 1.5 m above the ground level and the ratio of H/W is 1:1, 1:2 and 2:1, respectively. The flow around the top of the building and clearance flow between the buildings in street canyon influence by different H/W, which affected the diffusion of fine particulate matters. The largest PM2.5 concentrations are 88.1, 31.6 and 33.7 µg/m3 when x = 148.0, ? 92.3 and ? 186.7 m above the ground level of 1.5 m height and the building gap of 0, 20 and 40%, respectively. The air flows are cut by the clearance in the street canyons, and present the segmental characteristics. The largest PM2.5 concentrations are 10.6, 11.2 and 16.0 µg/m3 when x = 165.3 m, x = 58.0 and 1.5 m above the ground level of 1.5 m height and wind direction of the parallel to the street, perpendicular to the street and southwest, respectively. Modelled PM2.5 concentrations are basic agreement with measured PM2.5 concentrations for southwest wind direction. These results can help analyze the difussion of PM2.5 concentration in street canyons and urban planning.

An exposure assessment was conducted on naturally metal enriched topsoils of the city of Port Macquarie in order to establish whether the soils pose any threat to human health. Surface soils (0–10 cm depth, <2 mm) were investigated for their total, bioavailable and leachable Cr and Ni concentrations. Total metal concentrations ranged from 145 to 4540 mg Cr kg–1 and 20 to 2030 mg Ni kg–1, whereas soil extractions revealed low leachable contaminant concentrations (EDTA extraction: <0.1–0.2 mg Cr L–1 and <0.1–4.7 mg Ni L–1; acetic acid extraction: <0.1 mg L–1 Cr and Ni). Thus the bioavailability of Cr and Ni to plants is low, the leaching of metals into ground and surface waters is insignificant and the pathways of these metal pollutants from topsoils into residents are limited to the inadvertent ingestion, inhalation and skin adsorption of soil metals. Simulated gastric experiments, using hydrochloric acid, indicated that less than 0.01% of the total Cr and 0.1–2.4% of the total Ni ingested are soluble and available, for uptake into the human body. Critical receptors, such as small children would have to ingest considerable soil quantities (> 11.8 g per day) over long periods of time to experience an appreciable risk of deleterious effects. Thus, although Cr and Ni are present in high concentrations, the effective uptake of Cr and Ni from soil by the majority of residents is insignificant. The possibility that the Ni enriched topsoil induces allergic contact dermatitis in sensitised individuals remains to be evaluated.  相似文献

In vitro effects of Pb2+, the pyrethroid insecticides cypermethrin, fenvalerate and the syner‐gist piperonyl butoxide on sodium‐potassium‐activated adenosine triphosphatase (Na,K‐ATPase) from dog kidney were determined. Pb2+ with an estimated IC50 value of 5.2 μM was found to be a potent inhibitor of Na,K‐ATPase activity, whereas Na,K‐ATPase was less sensitive to the pyrethroids tested and piperonyl butoxide. Investigation with circular dichroism (CD) spec‐troscopy showed that inhibition occurs through conformational changes of the α‐subunit of the enzyme. The kinetic characteristics of inhibition of Na,K‐ATPase with varying substrate (ATP) concentrations as well as with varying Na+ concentrations exhibited a competitive type of inhibition with Pb2+ in the μM range. With Pb2+ alone in the enzyme assay no conformational changes of the protein could be observed which confirmed the assumption that Pb2+ can bind to the Na+ binding site of the α‐subunit. Uncompetitive type of inhibition occurred with varied K+ concentrations demonstrating that this cation binding site is not affected directly by Pb2+.

Complete reversal of Pb2+ by DTT confirms that a possible target for interaction of this heavy metal ion with Na, K‐ATPase are specific SH groups.

Synergistic effects could only be determined with higher Pb2+ concentrations of 3, 5 and 7 μM plus piperonyl butoxide while all other combinations with this heavy metal plus organic substances where of the additive type. With CD spectroscopy also only additive effects were observed. These results demonstrate that higher concentrations of piperonyl butoxide favor the binding of Pb2+ to the Na+ binding site by conformational changes of the protein.  相似文献

Groundwater is the main source of drinking water for the urban and rural residents in the plain area of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. The quality of groundwater has a direct relationship with human health. Thus, 386 groundwater samples collected from April to August in 2003 were analyzed. The samples were collected in basic evaluation units which are determined on the basis of watersheds. Total dissolved solids, total hardness, pH value, NH3-N, C6H5OH, Chemiluminescence detection of permanganate index (CODMn) and intestinal germ group were evaluated according to the guidelines of Groundwater Quality Standard (GB/T14848-93). The quality of the groundwater in each evaluation unit was classified by using the One Veto Method (a unified approach stipulated by the Ministry of Water Resources). The results indicate that the groundwater in the mainstream area of the Tarim Basin and the Yerqiang River Sub-basin belongs to Category V; the groundwater in the Wulungu River Sub-basin, the Kaidu-Kongque River Sub-basin, the Kashgar River Sub-basin, the Cherchen River Sub-basin and the Hotan River Subbasin belongs to Category IV; the groundwater in the Aibi Lake System belongs to Category II, and the groundwater of other evaluation units belongs to Category III. The causes of water quality formation were concisely analyzed. The results can be useful for the evaluation and management of water resources in the Xinjiang Plain Area.  相似文献

Abstract

The concentrations of four trace metals, namely copper, lead, cadmium and manganese, were determined in six fish species and three crustaceans collected from five sites spanning over 70% of the Ghanaian coastline.

Copper and lead were determined in Barracuda (Spraena spraena), the Ribbon fish (Trichiurus lepturus), the Sardine (Sardinella spp), the Sole (Cynoflossus senegalensis), the Sea Bream (Pagrus coupei) and the Soldier fish (Cynapastas marmuratus). Cadmium and manganese were analyzed in the Blue Crab (Callinectes sepidus), the Spiny lobster (Panilirus regius) and the edible shrimp (Crago septempinosus). Sampling sites included Takoradi, Elmina, Cape Coast, Accra and Tema.

Lead and copper in the fishes ranged 0.25-0.94 μgg?1 fresh weight and 0.40-2.54 μgg?1 dry weight (FW) respectively whilst cadmium and manganese in the crustaceans ranged 0.05-0.083 μgg?1 FW and 0.554-1.404 μgg?1 FW respectively.

The Barracuda accumulated the greatest amount of metals whilst the sardine accumulated the least. with the crustaceans, there was a significant difference between the amounts of the metals accumulated. the blue crab accumulated the greatest and the edible shrimp the least.

The analysis showed that: (i) there was a positive correlation between the metals bioconcentrated and the extent of pollution of the marine waters and (ii) along the Ghanaian Continental Shelf, the extent of pollution was of the increasing order as: Elmina = Cape Coast < Takoradi < Accra < Tema. Pollution of the marine waters could be minimized by control of flow of pollutants from land based activities.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of chemical analysis of four drinking waters from the Khaybar village, SW Saudi Arabia. Four main water‐wells in the Khaybar village were investigated. The Khaybar ground water is clear without odour but its taste differs according to the amount of total dissolved solids (T.D.S.). The pH values of such water are slightly alkaline. T.D.S. of the Khaybar water is higher than the Saudi highest desired level, but it is generally within the Saudi maximum permissible level.

Good drinking quality water can be found in Al Mazaab and Al Tilah water‐wells in the Khaybar village. The other two water‐wells can be used for irrigation purposes only.

The geological features of the Khaybar area suggest a meteoric origin for the Khaybar ground water which has been stored in the fractured metamorphic and igneous rocks and in alluvial deposits.  相似文献

SUMMARY

This paper is a review of studies on the impact of gas flaring on the Niger Delta environment. The Niger Delta region of Nigeria has suffered all forms of pollution and degradation arising from oil and natural gas exploitation. These include a decrease in agricultural yield, depression in flowering and fruiting in Okro and palm trees, deformities in children, liver damage and skin problems, increasing concentrations of airborne pollutants, acidification of soils and rainwater, corrosion of metal roofs and significant increases in concentrations of sulphates, nitrates and dissolved solids, with associated socio-economic problems.

In spite of decree 99, which bans unauthorized flaring, over 75% of the gas produced is still being flared. The paper observes that empirical studies on the impact of gas flaring on the physical, chemical, soil, biological, atmospheric and social environment have not been adequately documented. It concludes that there is urgent need for scientific study and analysis of the effect of gas flaring on the different environmental compartments in the Niger Delta, as this is a necessary ingredient for achieving the dream of sustainable mineral exploitation in the region.  相似文献

To elucidate the effects of temperature and algal cell concentration on pumping of water in the ascidian Ciona intestinalis a number of different experiments were performed. Beat frequency of the lateral cilia in the openings of the branchial sac was measured in intact specimens using a microprojection objective and a monochrome CCD video camera. At constant low algal cell concentration, beat frequencies increased linearly with temperature from 4.0 Hz (±0.5) at 7.4 °C to 13.6 Hz (±1.6) at 20.1 °C. At a constant temperature of 15 °C, beat frequency decreased with increasing algal cell concentration from approximately 3000 to >10 000 Rhodomonas sp. cells ml−1. The decrease was observed both in experiments where the ascidians had been acclimated to a fixed algal cell concentration and in experiments with changing concentrations. Effect of algal cell concentration on squirting/siphon closure and flow velocity in the exhalent siphon was measured using a thermistor. At low algal cell concentrations, flow velocity in the exhalent siphon was stable, apart from a few short squirts. At very high algal cell concentrations, the flow velocity was reduced and much less stable, with prolonged squirting. The effect of gut content on filtration was studied in experiments with specimens acclimated to high algal cell concentrations. Results showed a close relation between gut clearance and filtration rate. From the experimental results and a qualitative analysis of the Ciona-pump it was concluded that the ciliary beat frequency is proportional to the water flow through the sea squirt and that changes in pumping caused by temperature or algal cell concentration are under nervous control or governed by enzyme kinetics, rather than being a result of physico-mechanical properties, i.e. pump efficiency versus flow resistance, of the ascidian pump. The fast changes in chemical and biological properties of many coastal and inland waters in the last decades reflect the pressure of man on the environment. The surface waters of the Antarctic Peninsula, located far from industrial or populated areas, could eventually be used as background lines. Surface water samples were taken from five lagoons of King George Island, Antarctic Peninsula, and from the Kitiesh Lake. Sample pH and electrical conductivity were analysed in situ and in the laboratory, respectively. The dissolved fractions were analysed in 1997 and 1998. Total concentrations only for 1998 were determined in another fraction adjusted to pH 2. Aluminium, Ca, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Sr, Cd, Sn, Sb, Ba, Bi, and Pb were quantified in all samples by means of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Total and dissolved elemental concentrations were discussed considering the composition of particulate material suspended in the waters removed by streams or by water runoff, or from atmospheric aerosols. Concentrations of dissolved elements change from one lagoon to another. Total and dissolved elemental concentrations could be related to water movement by windstorms, to chemical mechanisms in water and/or to natural and anthropogenic atmospheric factors.  相似文献

This paper proposes a model for predicting the longitudinal profiles of streamwise velocities in an open channel with a model patch of vegetation. The governing equation was derived from the momentum equation and flow continuity equation. The model can estimate the longitudinal profiles of velocities both inside and outside a vegetation patch. Laboratory experiments indicate that the longitudinal profiles of velocities inside a patch and in the adjacent bare channel have the same adjustment distance in the longitudinal direction, but the profiles have different trends because the vegetation drag drives the flow from the patch to the adjacent bare channel. The model considers different dimensionless parameters in two flow adjustment regions upstream of and inside the patch. Sixteen sets of experimental data from different sources are used to verify the model. The model is capable of modeling the longitudinal profiles of velocities inside and outside patches of cylinders or cylinder-like plants. Compared to a previous model, the current model improves the modeling accuracy of longitudinal profiles of velocities.

Several analytical techniques offer the capability of simultaneously determining 5–40 elements. Of those techniques available, two are receiving extensive attention for analysis of water samples. Optical emission spectrometry utilizing plasma excitation has now evolved to a status in which 20–40 elements can be simultaneously determined on a routine basis. Instrumentation which relies on ion exchange chromatography separations is available which allows the routine determination of several cationic and/or anionic species.

The present discussion will briefly describe each of the above multielement analysis systems, summarize their respective capabilities and limitations with respect to water analysis, and project areas of future development.  相似文献

Mercury (Hg) in fish can present a potential risk to wildlife and human consumers. Mercury levels were determined in 12 fish species and 2 invertebrate species from the French coast of the Eastern English Channel collected in June and November 2012. Total mercury concentrations in the muscle tissues ranged between 0.04 and 1.63 µg g-1 (d.w.). Dab and sandeel displayed a significant positive correlation between Hg concentrations and fish length. Seasonal differences in Hg concentrations were observed for dab and shrimp. The lesser weever showed significantly higher concentrations of Hg (0.97 ± 0.34 µg g-1 d. w.) than all other species. Gobies and sprat, which had the smallest size, showed significantly lower concentrations than herring, whiting, pout and sardine. Among the considered species, flatfish such as dab, flounder, plaice and sole displayed intermediate levels of Hg. In the present study, the fish age expressed as specimen length seems to be one of the major factors governing Hg contents in muscle tissues. Finally, mercury concentrations in commercial fish from the Eastern English Channel were below the levels fixed by the European Union for total mercury in edible parts of fish products.  相似文献

The response of green roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) to Cu/Pb contamination and manure application in soil was investigated using pot experiments. Subsamples of a mineral soil were treated with increasing doses (0–500 mg kg?1) of Cu/Pb only and/or amended (at 10% w/w) with poultry or swine manure. Roselle plants were grown, monitored for changes in growth rate and post-harvest aboveground dry biomass and tissue Cu/Pb concentrations were determined. The plants were typically greenish with linear growth profiles at all metal doses, indicating some level of tolerance. Dry biomass yields decreased as metal dose increased. Poultry manure enhanced roselle biomass yields better than swine manure. Tissue Cu/Pb concentrations increased linearly as metal doses increased in unamended soils; whereas nonlinear responses were observed in manure-amended soils. Soil-to-plant transfer factors, T f (%) indicated that Cu (13≤T f (% )≤60) was more phytoavailable to roselle than Pb (11≤T f (% )≤20). Tissue metal concentrations were modelled from soil pH, organic matter, plant available and pseudototal metal; but the models appeared more reliable with plant available metal as a covariate than with pseudototal metal content. These observations may become useful whenever phytoextraction is the remedial option for soils moderately contaminated by toxic metals.  相似文献
