Improving eco-efficiency is propitious for saving resources and reducing emissions, and has become a popular route to sustainable development. We define two energy-related eco-efficiencies: energy efficiency (ENE) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission-related eco-efficiency (GEE) using energy consumption and the associated GHG emissions as the environmental impacts. Using statistical data, we analyze China??s energy consumption and GHG emissions by industrial subsystem and sector, and estimate the ENE and GEE values for China in 2007 as 4.871×107 US$/PJ and 4.26×108 US$/TgCO2eq, respectively. Industry is the primary contributing subsystem of China??s economy, contributing 45.2% to the total economic production, using 79.6% of the energy consumed, and generating 91.4% of the total GHG emissions. We distinguish the individual contributions of the 39 industrial sectors to the national economy, overall energy consumption, and GHG emissions, and estimate their energyrelated eco-efficiencies. The results show that although ferrous metal production contributes only 3.5% to the national industrial economy, it consumes the most industrial energy (20% of total), contributes 16% to the total industrial global warming potential (GWP), and ranks third in GHG emissions. The power and heat sector ranks first in GHG emissions and contributes one-third of the total industrial GWP, although it only consumes about 8% of total industrial energy and, like ferrous metal production, contributes 3.5% to the national economy. The ENE of the ferrous metal and power and heat sectors are only 8 and 2.1×107 US$/PJ, while the GEE for these two sectors are 9 and 4×104 US$/GgCO2eq, respectively; these are nearly the lowest ENE and GEE values among all 39 industry sectors. Finally, we discuss the possibility of ecoefficiency improvement through a comparison with other countries.  相似文献

Cover: Models predicting interactions between the native Iris hexagona (blue lines) and invasive Iris pseudacorus (yellow lines) in different disturbance scenarios. In benign (freshwater) conditions, the invasive eventually drives the native species to extinction (top left). Hurricanes (lower right) reverse this result by increasing salinity, to which the native is better adapted. Depending on frequency, hurricanes can eliminate the invasive entirely or allow the species to coexist. Photo of I.hexagona by Mark Tobler, modified by Karl Hasenstein to represent the duality of species interactions. See pages 164–173.  相似文献

Postlarval and juvenile Penaeus merguiensis de Man from the Embley River estuary on the north-eastern Gulf of Carpentaria were sampled every 2 wk from September 1986 until August 1989, using a small beam trawl. Settlement of planktonic postlarvae peaked during the pre-wet season (October to December), and declined through the wet season (January to March). Using length-frequency analysis between 12 and 14 cohorts of juvenile prawns were identified each year. Length-frequency analysis and modal progression were used to derive growth rates during the estuarine phase of the life cycle. Growth rates, which could be described by a linear model, ranged from 0.63 to 1.65 mm CL (carapace length) wk-1. Growth rates were positively influenced by water temperature and negatively influenced by prawn density. Salinity had no effect on growth rates. Prawns spent between 6 and 20 wk in the Embley River before emigrating offshore from the estuary. Weekly instantaneous rates of natural mortality (M) ranged from 0.23 to 0.94, and in general were lowest during the dry season (July to September) and highest during the pre-wet and wet seasons. Only temperature significantly influenced mortality rates, with mortality rates increasing with temperature. By projecting juvenile growth rates forward through time, we established which cohorts contributed to the offshore fishery each year. In 1987 and 1988 the April fishery consisted of prawns which had settled in the river before the end of January each year. Slow growth rates during the pre-wet season of 1988 meant that only cohorts that were settled before early December 1988 contributed to the fishery in April 1989. Whether a cohort contributes to the fishery depends on the settlement date, water temperature and prawn density.  相似文献

Development of the Crassostrea gigas gill was studied in order to better understand the feeding biology of early life stages, identify potentially critical developmental stages which may influence rearing success or recruitment to wild populations, and shed light on the evolution of the basic bivalve gill types. Larvae and juveniles were reared in an experimental hatchery, and larger specimens were obtained from a commercial hatchery. Specimens were relaxed, fixed, dried, and observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The right and left gills developed symmetrically, via a “cavitation–extension” process from the gill buds. The inner demibranchs developed first (V-stage, 0.29–2.70 mm), in a sequential postero-anterior series of homorhabdic filaments. The outer demibranchs developed later (W-stage, from 2.70 mm), also as homorhabdic filaments, synchronously along the gill axis. The principal filaments (PF) developed from the progressive fusion of three ordinary filaments (OF), at a size of 7.50 mm, and the consequent plication was accentuated by the formation of extensive tissue junctions. Effective filament number (number of descending and ascending filaments) showed a marked discontinuity at the transition from the V- to the W- stage of the gill. Filament ciliation showed several important changes: establishment of OF ciliation in the homorhabdic condition (2.70 mm), ciliary de-differentiation of the PF in the heterorhabdic condition (7.50 mm), and establishment of a latero-frontal cirri length gradient from the plical crest to the PF base. Reversal of direction of ciliary beat is also necessary prior to adult functioning of the PF. Three major transitions were identified in C. gigas gill development, each potentially important in rearing success or wild population recruitment: (1) transition from velum to gill at settlement, (2) transition from a V- to a W-shaped gill (2.70 mm), and (3) transition from the homorhabdic to the heterorhabdic condition (7.50 mm). Complete gill development was much more prolonged than in species previously studied. The major ontogenetic differences between the C. gigas heterorhabdic pseudolamellibranch gill and the pectinid heterorhabdic filibranch gill suggest that the heterorhabdic condition evolved independently in these two bivalve families.  相似文献

Many marine species, including mussels in the Mytilus edulis species group (i.e. M. edulis L., M. galloprovincialis Lamarck, and M. trossulus Gould), have an antitropical distribution pattern, with closely related taxa occurring in high latitudes of the northern and southern hemispheres but being absent from the tropics. We tested four hypotheses to explain the timing and route of transequatorial migration by species with antitropical distributions. These hypotheses yield different predictions for the phylogenetic relationship of southern hemisphere taxa relative to their northern counter-parts. The three Mytilus species were used to test these hypotheses since they exhibit a typical antitropical distribution and representative taxa occur in both the Pacific and Atlantic. Two types of mtDNA lineages were found among populations of mussels collected from the southern hemisphere between 1988 and 1996; over 90% of the mtDNA lineages formed a distinct subclade which, on average, had 1.4% divergence from haplotypes found exclusively in northern Atlantic populations of M. galloprovincialis. These data indicate that southern hemisphere mussels arose from a migration event from the northern hemisphere during the Pleistocene via an Atlantic route. The remainder of the southern hemisphere lineages (<10%) were very closely related to mtDNA haplotypes found in both M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis in the northern hemisphere, suggesting a second, more recent migration to the southern hemisphere. There was no evidence that southern hemisphere mussels arose from Pacific populations of mussels. Received: 8 December 1998 / Accepted: 8 November 1999  相似文献

Pollinator declines have prompted efforts to assess how land-use change affects insect pollinators and pollination services in agricultural landscapes. Yet many tools to measure insect pollination services require substantial landscape-scale data and technical expertise. In expert workshops, 3 straightforward methods (desk-based method, field survey, and empirical manipulation with exclusion experiments) for rapid insect pollination assessment at site scale were developed to provide an adaptable framework that is accessible to nonspecialist with limited resources. These methods were designed for TESSA (Toolkit for Ecosystem Service Site-Based Assessment) and allow comparative assessment of pollination services at a site of conservation interest and in its most plausible alternative state (e.g., converted to agricultural land). We applied the methods at a nature reserve in the United Kingdom to estimate the value of insect pollination services provided by the reserve. The economic value of pollination services provided by the reserve ranged from US$6163 to US$11,546/year. The conversion of the reserve to arable land would provide no insect pollination services and a net annual benefit from insect-pollinated crop production of approximately $1542/year (US$24∙ha–1∙year–1). The methods had wide applicability and were readily adapted to different insect-pollinated crops: rape (Brassica napus) and beans (Vicia faba) crops. All methods were rapidly employed under a low budget. The relatively less robust methods that required fewer resources yielded higher estimates of annual insect pollination benefit.  相似文献

Experiments were performed directly after collection from the East Greeland Current in June 1987 and 1988, and during resumed feeding after long-term starvation over 4 (October 1988), 4.5 (October 1987) and 6.5 (January 1988) mo. In addition, in June 1987, short-term starvation experiments of 5 and 15 d were conducted. Egg production was closely related to feeding in all experiments. While directly after collection eggs were produced within a few days, it took 2 wk (October 1987 and 1988) and 10 d (January 1988), respectively, to resume egg production after long-term starvation. During long-term starvation periods eggs were not laid. The decrease in total egg production with duration of starvation was due to decreasing clutch size and increasing spawning interval. In contrast, short-term starvation experiments only affected spawning interval. Interannual variability in egg production was high, with much higher clutch sizes in 1988. Average production rates in June 1988 correponded to 5% body C female-1 d-1, the maximum was 7.4% (1 274 eggs in 23 d). Carbon content of eggs was 0.40 g egg-1. C. glacialis is well adapted to pulsed food events in the Arctic by its longevity; its ability to preserve its reproductive potential over several months; its rapid mobilization of ovaries; and by its high egg production rates. The implication of prolonged spawning capacity on life cycle studies is discussed.  相似文献

Cover: Climate-change models project warmer air temperatures worldwide (upper left) and decreased summertime precipitation in many regions (upper right), which could result in warmer streams and lower water levels. Such conditions may facilitate the expansion of invasive species, such as this signal crayfish ( Pacifastacus leniusculis ) (photo by Jeremy Monroe, Freshwaters Illustrated).
