The Sudbury region in Canada is known for the mining and smelting of high-sulphide ores containing nickel, copper, iron and precious metals. Although reports provide information of metal levels in soil and plants, knowledge of genetic effects on plants growing in contaminated areas is limited. The main objective of this study was to characterise the level of genetic diversity in Pinus banksiana and Pinus resinosa populations from the Sudbury (Ontario) region using microsatellite markers. Soil samples were analysed for concentrations of metals. High levels of metal contents in soil were observed within short distances of the smelter compared with control sites. The level of genetic diversity was very low for P. resinosa populations and moderate for P. banksiana samples. Observed heterozygosity was fivefold higher in P. banksiana populations than P. resinosa populations studied. Overall, 17 and 24% of the total genetic diversity were attributed to differences among populations for P. banksiana and P. resinosa, respectively. In general, the inbreeding was significantly higher in P. resinosa populations than P. banksiana populations and gene flows were relatively low in both species. No significant trend of the levels of genetic diversity for metal contaminated and uncontaminated sites was found.  相似文献

Knowledge of total and bioavailable metal contents in soil is important for regional risk assessment and management. The main objective of the present study was to analyse the concentrations of metals in soils in two contrasting mining regions (Sudbury in Canada and Lubumbashi in DR-Congo). Genetic variation of plant populations was investigated to assess the potential impact of metal contamination on forest sustainability. The levels of copper, cobalt, zinc, arsenic, and lead were significantly higher (up to 200-fold) in mining sites in the Lubumbashi compared to the most highly contaminated Sudbury sites. The nickel content in soil samples from Lubumbashi was much lower compared to Sudbury region samples. Only 3.5% and 4 % of total copper and nickel, respectively, were phytoavailable, with values of 6%, 5.7%, 3.6%, and 5.4% for cobalt, magnesium, manganese, and zinc, respectively. There were significant positive correlations between total metal and phytoavailable metal concentrations for copper (r=0.99), nickel (r=0.86), cobalt (r=0.72), strontium (r=0.71), and zinc (r=0.66). Although genetic variation was high in Picea glauca populations from the Sudbury region, no association was found between metal contamination levels and genetic variation within and among the P. glauca populations.  相似文献

The potential environmental risk posed by metals in forest soils is typically evaluated by modeling metal mobility using soil-solution partitioning coefficients (K(d)), although such information is generally restricted to a few well-studied metals. Soil-solution partitioning coefficients were determined for 17 mineral elements (Al, As, Be, Ba, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, K, Li, Mg, Rb, Sr, Tl, U and V) in A-horizon (0-5 cm) soil at 46 forested sites that border the Precambrian Shield in central Ontario, where soil pH(aq) varied from 3.9 to 8.1. Sites were dominated by mature sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.), white birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.), balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) or white pine (Pinus strobus L.). Log K(d) values for all elements could be predicted by empirical linear regression with soil pH (r (2) = 0.17-0.77) independent of forest type, although this relationship was greatly affected by positive relationships between acid-extractable metal concentration and pH(aq) for 13 of the 17 elements. Elements that exhibited strong or moderate (r (2)> 0.29; p < 0.001) relationships with soil pH(aq) in soil water extracts include Al, Ba, Fe, Ga, K, Li, Rb, Tl, V (negative) and Ca (positive). Elemental partitioning in mineral soil was independent of forest type; tree species differed in their response to chemical differences in mineral soil. For example, Rb, Ba, and Sr concentrations in foliage of sugar maple and white birch significantly increased with increasing soil acidity, whereas Rb, Ba, and Sr concentrations in balsam fir and white pine foliage exhibited no response to soil pH(aq). While K(d) values can provide useful information on the potential mobility and bioavailability of mineral elements in forest soils, care must be used when interpreting the relative contribution of solid and aqueous phases to this relationship and the differing responses of vegetation in elemental cycling in forests must also be considered.  相似文献

Uptake of contaminants by plants and their mechanisms have been the subjects of several studies, but reports on the analysis of metal translocation in hardwood trees are limited. The main objective of this study is to compare metal accumulation and translocation in red maple (Acer rubrum) and trembling aspen (Poplar tremuloides) growing in Northern Ontario. Results show that P. tremuloides leaf tissues accumulate more nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) than roots. The concentrations of these elements in A. rubrum were low in leaf, branch, and roots tissues compared to the bioavailable levels of these metals in soil. The translocation factors (TFs) of metals from roots to leaves were low for copper (Cu) and high for iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), Ni, and Zn in P. tremuloides. They varied from 0.52 to 3.26 for Fe, 3.39 to 5.47 for Mg, 2.6 to 16.4 for Ni, and 1.41 to 4.1 for Zn. For A. rubrum the TF was low for all the elements except Mg. For this species, the TF values from roots to leaves varied from 0.08 to 0.17 for Fe, 2.62 to 4.13 for Mg, 0.26 to 0.81 for Ni, and 0.71 to 0.90 for Zn. Overall, Cu does not accumulate in P. tremuloides and A. rubrum tissues, and the two species have different mechanisms in dealing with the other main contaminants in the region, specifically Ni and Zn. P. tremuloides is an accumulator for Ni and Zn while A. rubrum is an excluder for Zn and it uses the avoidance strategy to deal with soil Ni contamination.  相似文献

A probabilistic analysis was performed on soil arsenic concentration data from 4 brownfield sites at Beijing (Chaoyang and Haidian Districts), involved in environmental assessment studies. The available data sets were processed to provide a statistical characterization of the background populations and differentiate “anomalous data” from the natural range of variation of arsenic concentrations in soil. The site-specific background distributions and the existing wide-scale background values defined for the Beijing area were compared, discussing related implications for the definition of metal contamination soil screening levels (SSLs) in site assessment studies. The statistical analysis of As data sets discriminated site-specific background populations, encompassing 88% to 94% of the sample data, from outliers values, associated with either subsoil natural enrichments or possible anthropogenic releases. Upper Baseline Concentration (UBC) limits (+ 2σ level), including most of the site-specific metal background variability, were derived based on the statistical characterization of the background populations. Sites in the Chaoyang South District area had UBC values in the range 10.4–12.6 mg·kg-1. These ranges provide meaningful SSL values to be adopted for As in local site assessment studies. Using the wide-scale background value for the Beijing area would have erroneously classified most of the areas in the subject sites as potentially contaminated.  相似文献

We compared pitfall catches from four types of mature lodgepole pine—white spruce forest with those from five age classes of young forest regenerating subsequent to clear-cutting. Ground beetles were most abundant in the youngest sites (1–2 years since cutting) and in the mature stands on moist soil. Species richness was higher in regenerating sites than in mature forest. Cluster analysis grouped the ground-beetle fauna according to forest age and forest type, suggesting that there is a general pattern of recovery after logging. Responses of common species to forest cutting fell into three groups: (1) forest generalists (2 species) were not dramatically affected, (2) species of open habitat (27 species) appeared and/or increased in abundance, and (3) mature forest species (10 species) disappeared or decreased in abundance. Populations of many mature forest species appear to recover following logging, but several specialists did not recolonize even the oldest regenerating stands. Furthermore, fragmentation and creation of large areas of relatively homogeneous young forest stages through logging may have detrimental long-term effects even on the more abundant forest generalists. We must better understand subtle variations in habitat in order to maintain invertebrate diversity while harvesting the boreal forest.  相似文献

The diversity of soil Collembola was studied in two sites of the central Pyrenees (France). In each site a seminatural beech forest was compared to a conifer plantation. At the Rille site planted spruce and naturally regenerated beech forest were established on ancient meadows, and at the Carmil site a fir plantation had locally replaced the natural beech forest. Thirty-two soil cores of 250 cm3 were collected in each forest type at each site, and core fauna were extracted with a Berlese-Tullgren funnel. Differences in structure and composition of collembolan communities were observed from original to planted forest, and these changes followed different patterns at the two sites. In both cases, however, the diversity of the fauna was impoverished in the plantation. The endemic component suffered a particularly severe loss in species richness and abundance, whereas non-endemic species were more weakly affected. Endemic biota, which from a conservation perspective represent the most valuable element of the fauna, were its most vulnerable component. Endemic species and endemic areas therefore deserve particular attention when biodiversity fluctuations caused by reforestation are studied. This could lead to reassessment of the potential effects of artificial reforestation on the biodiversity of temperate forests. There is a general need for a systematic inventory and protection of forests with endemic soil biota.  相似文献

Five populations of the bathyal trochid gastropod Bathybembix bairdii (Dall) taken from depths of 579 to 1156 m in the Southern California Continental Borderland were surveyed for levels of genetic variability at 18 presumptive gene loci, using techniques of starch gel electrophoresis. All the populations were highly similar genetically; none of the populations possessed unique alleles. Four of 5 polymorphic loci scored in all the populations displayed statistically significant heterogeneity of allelic frequencies among stations. Only the diallelic fumarase (FUM) locus displayed a trend with depth. The geographic and depth patterns of the genetic variability in these populations do not support the hypothesis that the high levels of genetic variability observed in bathyal populations are an artifact of gene flow between populations differentiated with depth. The 16.2% of the loci heterozygous per individual of B. bairdii is of the same order as the average heterozygosities reported for other deep-sea invertebrate taxa. These reports of high genetic variability in a physically constant and seasonless environment are reviewed and discussed in the context of the trophic-stability hypothesis of Ayala and Valentine and the time, size and divergence hypothesis of Soulé. Evidence is presented that despite the observed correlation of average heterozygosities in benthic marine invertebrates with seasonality of the trophic regime, this is not apparent for an enzyme system (leucine amino peptidase) which might be expected to display this trend if it reflected a genetic strategy to cope with trophic seasonality. The time, size and divergence hypothesis, focusing on population size, accounts for the general features of levels of genetic variability in deep-sea invertebrates.  相似文献

Effects of Selective Logging on the Butterflies of a Bornean Rainforest   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Abstract: Selective logging has been the main cause of disturbance to tropical forests in Southeast Asia, so the extent to which biodiversity is maintained in selectively logged forest is of prime conservation importance. We compared the butterfly assemblages of Bornean primary rainforest to those of rainforest selectively logged 6 years previously. We sampled by means of replicated transects stratified into riverine and ridge forests and we included roads in the logged forest. There was a three-fold variation in species richness and abundance over the 8-month sampling period. More species and individuals were observed in the logged forest, although between-replicate variability was high. Rarefied species richness was positively correlated with canopy openness within the range of disturbance levels encountered at our forest sites. Within families, there was no significant difference in the number of species between primary and logged forest. There was a significant difference in the relative abundance of species, but this was due largely to the abundance of one or two species. Community ordination separated the sites along a gradient of disturbance and revealed strong differences between riverine and ridge-forest butterfly assemblages in primary forest that were obscured in logged forest. There was no evidence that logging has resulted in a change in the composition of the butterfly assemblages from species with a local distribution to more widespread species. We conclude that at a logged forest site in close proximity to primary forest, low intensities of logging do not necessarily reduce the species richness or abundance of butterflies, although assemblage composition is changed.  相似文献

Assisted migration of forest trees has been widely proposed as a climate change adaptation strategy, but moving tree populations to match anticipated future climates may disrupt the geographically based, coevolved association suggested to exist between host trees and ectomycorrhizal fungal (EMF) communities. We explored this issue by examining the consistency of EMF communities among populations of 40 year-old Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii) trees in a common-garden field trial using four provenances from contrasting coastal climates in southwestern British Columbia. Considerable variation in EMF community composition within test sites was found, ranging from 0.38 to 0.65 in the mean similarity index, and the divergence in EMF communities from local populations increased with site productivity. Clinal patterns in colonization success were detected for generalist and specialist EMF species on only the two productive test sites. Host population effects were limited to EMF species abundance rather than species loss, as richness per site averaged 15.0 among provenances and did not differ by transfer extent (up to 450 km), while Shannon's diversity index declined slightly. Large differences in colonization rates of specialist fungi, such as Tomentella stuposa and Clavulina cristata, raise the possibility that EMF communities maladapted to soil conditions contributed to the inferior growth of some host populations on productive sites. The results of the study suggest locally based specificity in host-fungal communities is likely a contributing factor in the outcome of provenance trials, and should be a consideration in analyzing seed-transfer effects and developing strategies for assisted migration.  相似文献

Cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment support a self-sustaining presettlement forest of eastern white cedar (  Thuja occidentalis L.) in which some trees are over 1000 years old. Many of the cliffs are also popular locations for recreational rock climbing. Our study employed a stratified random sampling design to assess the impact of rock climbing on populations of cliff-face and cliff-edge trees. Tree density and age structure were compared between four climbed and three unclimbed sites in the vicinity of Milton, Ontario. Signs of physical damage were also recorded for the trees sampled at each site. The results showed that living tree density on the cliff face was lower in climbed areas. The age structures of these forests showed that the numbers of older and younger age classes have been reduced on climbed cliff faces compared with unclimbed areas. A high percentage of trees on climbed cliff faces showed evidence of damage by humans. These trends were not as apparent on cliff edges where other disturbances have affected age structure. We recommend that cliff faces be explored for the presence of presettlement forest and that recreation managers of lands with exposed cliff faces incorporate rock climbing considerations into their management plans. Monitoring programs would help track levels of disturbance. Education of the climbing community would be the most effective long-term solution to limiting disturbance in sensitive areas.  相似文献

The forest vegetation simulator (FVS) model was calibrated for use in Ontario, Canada, to predict the growth of forest stands. Using data from permanent sample plots originating from different regions of Ontario, new models were derived for dbh growth rate, survival rate, stem height and species group density index for large trees and height and dbh growth rate for small trees. The dataset included black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) for the boreal region, sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.), white pine (Pinus strobus L.), red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) and yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britton) for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region, and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) for both regions. These new models were validated against an independent dataset that consisted of permanent sample plots located in Quebec. The new models predicted biologically consistent growth patterns whereas some of the original models from the Lake States version of FVS occasionally did not. The new models also fitted the calibration (Ontario) data better than the original FVS models. The validation against independent data from Quebec showed that the new models generally had a lower prediction error than the original FVS models.

Previous studies have found strong evidences for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) egg retention in fjords, which are caused by the combination of vertical salinity structure, estuarine circulation, and egg specific gravity, supporting small-scaled geographical differentiations of local populations. Here, we assess the variability in egg specific gravity for selected local populations of this species, that is, two fjord-spawning populations and one coastal-spawning population from Northern Norway (66–71°N/10–25°E). Eggs were naturally spawned by raised broodstocks (March to April 2009), and egg specific gravity was measured by a density-gradient column. The phenotype of egg specific gravity was similar among the three local populations. However, the associated variability was greater at the individual level than at the population level. The noted gradual decrease in specific gravity from gastrulation to hatching with an increase just before hatching could be a generic pattern in pelagic marine fish eggs. This study provides needed input to adequately understand and model fish egg dispersal.  相似文献

The study used population genetic data to test whether outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) are largely derived from a single outbreak or are independent events. The consequences of different modes of outbreak for population differentiation and gene flow were predicted and then compared with those estimated from a set of 8 outbreaking and a set of 5 non-outbreaking populations sampled in 1986 and 1987. The level of inter-population variation observed among outbreaking populations was less than that among non-outbreaking populations and gene flow was greater among outbreaking than among non-outbreaking populations. Greater population differentiation among non-outbreaking than outbreaking populations was not consistent with the hypothesis that outbreaks were independent events, but was consistent with a number of outbreaks being secondary. Estimates which took account of a number of aspects of sampling error demonstrated significant levels of genetic subdivision among non-outbreaking populations but not among outbreaking populations. The lack of significant genetic subdivision of outbreaking populations, given significant levels among non-outbreaking populations, was also inconsistent with outbreaks being indenpendent events, but was consistent with outbreaks being largely secondary. The allozyme data were insufficient to identify clearly individual populations that might have been the result of an independent outbreak. It is concluded that the majority of outbreaks are probably secondary derivatives from a single primary outbreak occurring in the northern part of the Central Section of the GBR, although the possibility that a small number of populations might outbreak independently of the main set cannot be excluded.Contribution No. 547 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

Six Tridacna gigas populations were sampled in 1990 from locations throughout the central and northern Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Despite separations in excess of 1000 km, mean Nei's unbiased genetic distances among the populations was 0.0007. The complete lack of spatial variation observed among populations did not results from lack of genetic variability. Genetic variation within populations was high, with mean heterozygosities from 0.221 to 0.250. Gene frequencies were consistent with expectations under conditions of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. These data suggest panmixis, or random mating, throughout the highly connected reef system of the central and northern GBR. The large gene exchange among the giant clam populations has important implications for conservation management of one of the few large populations of T. gigas in the world. Small local effects are likely to be overcome in time by inputs from other sources. However, large genetic perturbations, particularly from up-current sources, may spread rapidly through the population.Contribution No. 561 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

Genetic differentiation and genetic variability of sporophytic and gametophytic populations of Gelidium arbuscula (Bory) from three localities sampled in 1989 and 1990 in the Canary Islands (Spain) were examined by isozyme electrophoresis. Twenty-three to 29 putative alleles corresponding to 22 gene loci, were compared. High deviations in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and significant differences between allelic frequencies of sporophytic and gametophytic subpopulations at the same locality were found, suggesting a predominant asexual reproduction of G. arbuscula. The genetic variability (percentage of polymorphic loci, mean number of alleles per locus and average gene diversity) of haploid subpopulations was lower than that of diploid subpopulations at all three localities, being the lowest described for seaweeds. No correlation between genetic and geographical distance was found. The high genetic differentiation coefficient between all subpopulations suggests a very reduced genetic flow between subpopulations of the same and of different localities. These results suggest that the genetic structure of the populations of G. arbuscula from the Canary Islands is due to a founder-effect combined with a predominance of asexual reproduction. This is the first report comparing allelic frequencies between sporophytic and gametophytic subpopulations of seaweeds.  相似文献

Acanthochromis polyacanthus is an unusual tropical damselfish because it lacks pelagic larvae and has lost the capacity for broad-scale dispersal among coral reefs. On the modern Great Barrier Reef, this fish has multiple colour morphs and we have previously described steep genetic clines in the central region between three colour morphs. A similar transition of colour morphs has been found in the far northern region (Latitude 11°S), where at least five colour morphs and intergrading hybrids were found during a survey of 14 locations on nine adjacent reefs. On two of these reefs, monochromatic white and bicoloured morphs coexist, partitioning the reef slope vertically when sympatric, but occupying the full depth range elsewhere. In areas of overlap, they interbreed, producing hybrids of intermediate colour. Although the discriminatory power of our genetic analysis was weakened by the low level of variability in these populations (only four polymorphic loci), allozyme electrophoresis revealed significant genetic differentiation within and among reefs. There was neither simple linkage between colour and protein variation, nor correlation between genetic similarity and proximity of sampled populations. We suggest that the observed chaotic structure is the result of differences among the founding populations, although the two colour-based stocks have been homogenized through a long history of introgression during multiple episodes of isolation and secondary contact. Despite genetic mixing, phenotypic diversity (i.e. colour morphs) seems to have been preserved in these populations by sexual selection, perhaps reinforced by natural selection. The long-term stability of this outcome, however, is suggested by the presence of unique morphs on two reefs that are detached from the continental shelf and surrounded by very deep water. The strong identity of these populations can be attributed to long occupation of these isolated sites compared with those on the continental shelf which have only been established in the last 15 000 yr and still retain differences arising from the initial founder events. Plant succession is one of many factors that may affect the composition and structure of herbivorous insect communities. However, few studies have examined the effect of forest age on the diversity and abundance of insect communities. If forest age influences insect diversity, then the schedule of timber harvest rotation may have consequent effects on biodiversity. The insect herbivore community on Quercus alba (white oak) in the Missouri Ozarks was sampled in a chronoseries, from recently harvested (2 yr) to old-growth (approximately 313 yr) forests. A total of nine sites and 39 stands within those sites were sampled in May and August 2003. Unique communities of plants and insects were found in the oldest forests (122-313 yr). Density and species richness of herbivores were positively correlated with increasing forest age in August but not in May. August insect density was negatively correlated with heat load index; in addition, insect density and richness increased over the chronoseries, but not on the sunniest slopes. Forest structural diversity (number of size classes) was positively correlated with forest age, but woody plant species richness was not. In sum, richness, density, and community structure of white oak insect herbivores are influenced by variation in forest age, forest structure, relative abundance of plant species, and abiotic conditions. These results suggest that time between harvests of large, long-lived, tree species such as white oak should be longer than current practice in order to maintain insect community diversity.  相似文献

Abstract: Habitat fragmentation has reduced the richness of native species of forests in northeastern North America. Despite recent large-scale increases in forest cover, studies indicate that understory herbaceous plant communities may take many decades to recover. We studied recovery patterns of vegetation following up to 35 years of forest regeneration in restored former cottage and road sites at Point Pelée National Park, Ontario, Canada, to assess the vulnerability of the understory herbaceous species. Overall, there were no significant differences in the diversity of native species between restored and relatively undisturbed reference sites. There was, however, significant among-site variation in the composition of the native species component of these plant communities. When only restored sites were examined, variation in native species composition was associated with time since site restoration, soil moisture, canopy cover, and distance to continuous forest. Native species were assigned vulnerability rankings according to their relative occurrence in reference and restored sites. Spring-flowering herbs, with ant- or gravity-dispersed seeds, were absent from restored sites and were defined as highly vulnerable. In contrast, summer- and fall-flowering herbs, with vertebrate- and wind-dispersed seeds, dominated restored sites and were less vulnerable. Species of low and intermediate vulnerability had colonized restored sites successfully, and the latter should function as indicators of recovery. In contrast, species with high vulnerability rankings had not recovered at all and, because of their limited dispersal ranges, may recolonize restored sites only if they are actively reintroduced.  相似文献
