Shallow rocky habitats in SW Apulia (SE Italy, Mediterranean Sea) were surveyed in late spring 2002 to assess distribution patterns of sea urchins (Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula) and barren habitats (coralline barrens and bare substrates) in rocky reefs impacted by the destructive fishery of the rock-boring date-mussel Lithophaga lithophaga. Sea urchin density, test size-structure and biomass, and the percent cover of barrens were evaluated at four locations (5–6 km apart from each other), two heavily impacted by the date-mussel fishery and two controls. Sea urchin density and barren habitat cover were assessed at two and three sites (100–300 m apart), respectively, within each location. Sea urchin biomass was evaluated only at the scale of locations. Average density of P. lividus did not significantly change between impacted locations and controls, whereas A. lixula showed a greater density at the impacted locations. Distribution patterns of A. lixula, in addition, differed at the spatial scale of a few metres between impacted locations and controls, being generally more aggregated at the controls. The size-frequency distribution (test diameter) of P. lividus showed a mode at 3–4 cm at the impacted locations compared to a mode at 2–3 cm in the controls. The size-frequency of A. lixula was bimodal at the damaged locations (with modes at 1–2 and 4–5 cm, respectively) and unimodal (with the mode at 4–5 cm) at the controls. Average biomass of both sea urchins (P. lividus and A. lixula) was two- to fourfold greater at the impacted locations (~600 g wet wt m–2) than at the controls (150–250 g wet wt m–2). Barren habitats had a far greater average cover (mainly of macroalgae) at the impacted locations (from 79% to 96%) than at control locations (from 7% to 21%). These results show that the date-mussel fishery may have the potential to affect distribution patterns of sea urchins and to greatly enhance the percent cover of barren grounds in shallow Mediterranean rocky reefs.Communicated by R. Sympatric sea urchin species are usually considered to belong to the same grazer guild. Nevertheless, their role in community dynamics may vary due to species-specific morphological traits, feeding preferences and foraging behavior. In the Mediterranean Sea, the two species Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula co-occur in barren areas. Whereas P. lividus is usually considered responsible for creating a barren ground, the roles of the two sea urchin species in its maintenance are currently unclear. The relative and combined effects of P. lividus and A. lixula on maintaining the benthic community in the barren state were tested experimentally, using orthogonal exclusion of the two species. Results show that exclusion of A. lixula, regardless of the presence of P. lividus, led to a significant decrease in the surface of bare rock and a significant change of the algal assemblages, thus demonstrating the major role of this species in maintaining the barren state.  相似文献

The role played by the urchins, Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula, in the formation and persistence of barren areas dominated by encrusting coralline macroalgae is yet to be fully elucidated. This study, carried out in the NW Mediterranean (43° 30′N, 10° 20′E) between February 2005 and April 2006, investigated how the loss or density decrease in one or both urchin species influences the recovery of erect macroalgal stands (dominated by filamentous forms) at the margins of barren areas. At a depth of 4–6 m, three barren patches were assigned to each of the following treatments: (1) control (natural densities of A. lixula and P. lividus); (2) 50 % of the natural density of A. lixula and natural density of P. lividus; (3) total removal of A. lixula and natural density of P. lividus; (4) 50 % of the natural density of P. lividus and natural density of A. lixula; (5) total removal of P. lividus and natural density of A. lixula; (6) 50 % of the natural densities of both A. lixula and P. lividus; (7) total removal of both A. lixula and P. lividus. The effects of the herbivore treatments were evaluated either in the presence or the absence of encrusting corallines. The partial or total removal of A. lixula, P. lividus or both favored the proliferation of filamentous macroalgae at the margins of barren patches. The presence of encrusting corallines reduced the development of these macroalgae. The results of this study suggest that a moderate decrease in the density of just one of the two species can decrease the ability of the herbivore assemblage to control the proliferation of filamentous macroalgae at the margins of barren patches. The extent of barren areas appears, therefore, to be regulated by the outcome of density-dependent interactions between the two species of sea urchins.  相似文献

Scanning-electron-microscope investigations on the test microstructure of two regular sea urchins, Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck) and Arbacia lixula Linné have been especially devoted to the sutures between test plates, and the spines. Some features of both these components may be related to ecological and ethological differences between the two species. It is well documented that the structure of the sea urchin's test plates consists of a meshwork of calcareous trabecules embedded within the mesenchyme. The suture between the two lines of plates of each radial or intertradial zone exhibits a gap which plays some part in the process of the plates' growth. However, the gap may also constitute a complementary stress-breaker of mechanical forces (such as waves) which are exerted upon the test in the natural environment. In A. lixula this gap is so wide and the height: diameter ratio so low, that this species is particularly well fitted to bear physical stress and force on its apical region: since A. lixula almost exclusively inhabits vertical or subvertical rocky substrates at 2 to 15 m depth, where wave action is mainly exerted perpendicular to the substrate, these particular features of sutures and test shape may be a morphofunctional adaptation to this habitat. The sutures of P. lividus exhibit a narrower gap, making this species less able to bear strong apical pressure; consequently, P. lividus usually occurs on exposed horizontal or gently inclined substrates, but also inhabits sea-grass beds as deep as 15 to 20 m. The spines of P. lividus bear deep longitudinal grooves with lateral teeth, which seem especially fitted for collecting and transporting organic particles from the top of the spines to the apical region of the test where they are digested and assimilated by coelomocytes and epithelial cells. In the natural environment, the slightest water motion provides the spines with suspended particles; in extremely sheltered places or in aquaria however, the spines actively collect particles. Therefore, P. lividus populations can thrive in places where food resources other than suspended particles are scarce. The grooves on the spines of A. lixula are less marked, and thus unsuitable for collection of suspended particles. This species can therefore fulfil its energy requirements only by grazing and absorption of dissolved material. It appears that although belonging to the same biocoenosis, P. lividus and A. lixula do not occupy the same ecological niche. Their potential utilization in either urban or chemical pollution monitoring studies is discussed.  相似文献

Morpho-functional features potentially involved in defence mechanisms against fish predators (i.e. attachment tenacity, spine length, and test robustness and thickness) have been assessed in two Mediterranean sea urchins, Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula. All four morpho-functional features were significantly and positively related to individual size for both species of sea urchins. Test robustness (i.e. static load needed to break sea urchin tests) was significantly greater for A. lixula (from 3,450 to 15,000 g depending on size) than for P. lividus (1,180–11,180 g). Attachment tenacity (i.e. force needed to dislodge sea urchins from the rocky substrate) was greater in A. lixula (280–3,300 g) than in P. lividus (110–1,450 g), and the difference tended to decrease in relation to smaller sea urchin size. Spine length was greater in A. lixula (1.5–2.9 cm) than in P. lividus (0.5–2.3 cm), but the difference decreased for larger sea urchin size. Test thickness was slightly greater (but not significantly) in A. lixula (0.35–1.10 mm) than in P. lividus (0.12–0.90 mm). These results provide evidence that morpho-functional features of sea urchins could be involved in affecting predation rates by fishes upon P. lividus and A. lixula, with potential implications for the population structure and distribution patterns of the two sea urchins in shallow rocky reefs.Communicated by R. Sea urchins are a key group of herbivores in both temperate and tropical food webs because they control macroalgal cover, and consequently influence primary productivity and phase shifts on reefs. Despite being abundant on southwestern Atlantic reefs, sea urchin distributions, and their association with abiotic and biotic variables, are poorly known. In this study, sea urchin assemblages were surveyed in 2011 at multiple depths at eight sites in Arraial do Cabo (Brazil, 22°57′S/41°01′W), with sites split between a colder, more wave-exposed location, and a warmer, more sheltered location. The influence of this large-scale physical gradient, along with changes in depth and substrate complexity, on sea urchin densities was then investigated. Predator biomass was low and did not vary significantly among sites. Among the seven species recorded, Paracentrotus gaimardi, Echinometra lucunter and Arbacia lixula were dominant. Linear mixed-effects models indicated that location was important, with mid-sized P. gaimardi individuals and A. lixula more common at cooler, exposed sites and E. lucunter more abundant at warmer, sheltered sites. Sea urchin densities typically decreased with increasing depth, probably caused by changes in factors such as light, wave exposure, and sedimentation. Substrate complexity had a positive effect on the abundance of all species, presumably because of the increased availability of refuges. Physical gradients have important consequences for urchin distributions and their ecological functions at relatively small spatial scales on these reefs, and should be incorporated into herbivore monitoring programmes. Research is also required to examine how differential sea urchin distributions affect benthic dynamics.  相似文献

We studied the reproductive cycle of the sea urchin Arbacia lixula in a subtidal population from northeast Spain over four years using a gonadosomatic index (GSI) and gonad histology. Our results show that the GSI of A. lixula follows a seasonal cycle which peaks in May–July and attains its lowest values in October–November every year. The time course of the GSI matched closely the photoperiod cycle. We also found a remarkable inter-annual variability in the maximum value of GSI, which correlated with mean water temperature during the gonad growth period (winter and spring). Gonad histology was also in agreement with a single gametogenic cycle per year in this species. We explored the application of circular statistics to present and analyse gonadal development data, which allowed us to adequately handle the high intra-individual variability detected, with several developmental stages commonly found within the same gonad. The picture that emerged is one of a gametogenic timing driven by photoperiod, while the amount of reproductive output is determined by temperature. This is coherent with the tropical origin of the species and lends support to recent warnings about an increase in the abundance of this species in the Mediterranean as a result of global warming, with associated increased impact potential in sublittoral communities.  相似文献

The action of various concentrations of zinc on different phases of development of Arbacia lixula L. has been observed. The following concentrations were used in the experiment: 0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 mg l-1; these concentrations were tested on unfertilized eggs, sperms, fertilized eggs and adult individuals. It was found that after 96 h a 0.01 mg l-1 concentration reduces the mobile sperm percentage compared with the control group. At concentrations of 0.1, 1 and 10 mg l-1 no mobile sperm were found after 96 h. Compared with the control group, the action of zinc on unfertilized eggs was to increase the percentage of eggs showing signs of cytolisis after 12, 36 and 60 h. In the case of fertilized eggs it was found that with a concentration of 0.01 mg l-1 the P5 pluteus stage was attainable; the percentage of forms reaching that stage was less than in the control group. At 0.1 mg l-1 only a very low percentage of eggs could reach the P5 pluteus stage; concentrations of 1 and 10 mg l-1 are incompatible with the normal development of an egg. Adult individuals kept in aquaria with 1 mg l-1 zinc showed no signs of suffering after 20 d. Gametes are proposed as the appropriate material for carrying out bioassays.  相似文献

The action of riboflavine, glutamic acid and glycine on the kinetics of egg development and larval growth of the 48-h Arbacia lixula (Linné) pluteus has been observed in an artificial sea-water medium. The substances were tested at several concentrations, varying from 0.1 g/l to 50 mg/l. The results are compared with those obtained with another species, Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck) and natural sea-water medium. Glutamic acid and glycine appear to significantly affect both egg and larval development; however, riboflavine appears to affect development in the egg only. Dissolved amino-acids tested at natural concentrations interfere in the protein synthesis according to the degree of maturity of the eggs and the species. This action thus modifies the kinetics of the development of the egg and larval growth. Riboflavine appears to stimulate enzyme action which, however, has no deleterious effect on pluteus growth. In high concentrations, the amino-acids could act as chelates indirectly stimulating the growth of the larva.

The effects of starvation on the levels of protein, carbohydrates and lipids of three principal reserve compartments-the gonads, digestive tract, and test-have been studied in the resting stage of the sea urchin Arbacia lixula. Variations of these levels were observed during 1 month's starvation. Analysis of covariance revealed the following significant changes: (a) a decrease in carbohydrates of the test and digestive tract; (b) a decrease in lipids of the test and gonads; (c) an increase in proteins of the gonads. A decrease in the carbohydrates and lipids of the test during the first week of starvation emphasizes the importance of the test as a storage organ.  相似文献

Allozyme data are presented for populations of the bresiliid shrimp Rimicaris exoculata from two hydrothermal vent fields, Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse (TAG) and Broken Spur, located along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. These indicate that all morphotypes of R. exoculata examined, including those previously interpreted as representing separate species, are conspecific. Conversely, genetic identity between a single specimen of Chorocaris sp. and R. exoculata was high for intergeneric comparisons. Genetic variation in the populations of R. exoculata (H o =0.034 to 0.056) was in the lower range of that estimated for other vent organisms, but similar to values obtained for other species of caridean shrimps in previous genetic studies. F-statistics were used to examine the population structure of R. exoculata. Estimates of variance of allele frequencies among populations (F ST ) between TAG and Broken Spur were very low (mean F ST =0.001), indicating no significant genetic differentiation between these populations although they were separated by 370 km. The number of migrants per generation was estimated from F ST and by a private-alleles method, and indicates that migration between the two fields exceeds 100 individuals per generation. This may be because of efficient larval or adult migration or a combination of both. Estimates of the correlation between homologous alleles between individuals within local populations (F IS ) of R. exoculata were high at two enzyme loci and indicate a heterozygote deficiency which caused a significant deviation from genotype frequencies expected under Hardy-Weinberg conditions. This deficiency was caused by the occurrence of rare homozygous genotypes in small individuals. In large individuals, rare alleles decreased in frequency or disappeared completely. This is discussed in relation to previous genetic investigations on other vent and nonvent organisms.  相似文献

Egg production and hatching success of the copepod Temora longicornis were measured in laboratory experiments and in the field (North Sea). In the laboratory, ingestion of four algal species (Thalassiosira weissflogii, Phaeocystis globosa, Isochrysis sp. and Dunaliella tertiolecta) was followed and the content of fatty acids in the algae was determined. The two food types (T. weissflogii and Isochrysis sp.) that provided the highest ingestion of carbon and long chain fatty acids also resulted in the highest egg production rate (Er) and hatching success (H%). In contrast, D. tertiolecta led to both low ingestion of carbon and long chain fatty acids, resulting in low reproductive success. There was a positive relationship between the amount of eicosapentaenoic fatty acid [20:5(n-3), EPA] ingested and Er and H%, and of the ratio between docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic fatty acid [22:6(n-3)/20:5(n-3), DHA/EPA] in the ingested food and H%. In the field, chlorophyll a and specific fatty acids were measured and protists were enumerated, in order to investigate the link between these factors and the reproductive success of T. longicornis. Hatching time was found to be related to temperature and exceeded 120 h at 6°C. No relationship was found between chlorophyll a and reproductive success (Er or H%). Er correlated with the concentration of diatoms and ciliates, which were the dominating protists in early spring, indicating that food quantity was the limiting factor for Er. As in the laboratory experiments, H% was dependent on the fatty acid DHA and the ratio of DHA/EPA, which indicates that the quality of eggs (H%) is linked to the quality of food.Communicated by M. Parma microlepis (Günther) were collected from Malabar, an urban location close to the centre of Sydney, Australia, and from Jervis Bay, a reference location 170 km south of the city centre. At each location, fish were collected from two sites separated by 100 to 200 m. The ultrastructure of normal liver tissue is described based on 20 female fish collected from Jervis Bay, where fish are known to be exposed to low levels of organochlorine contaminants. Alterations in the endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, lysosomes and nuclei of hepatocytes were identified and quantified in the liver tissue of fish from this location and compared to alterations in 20 female fish collected from Malabar, where fish are exposed to higher concentrations of organochlorine pesticides such as DDT compounds. There were significant differences in the percentage of hepatocytes with swollen mitochondria (F = 124.025, df = 2, 2, P = 0.008) and atypical nuclei (F = 22.198, df = 2, 2, P = 0.043) between sites (100 to 200 m apart), but there were no clear differences between the percentage of structural alterations in the hepatocytes of P. microlepis from Jervis Bay and Malabar. Associations between liver morphology and the organochlorines aldrin, dieldrin, DDE and chlordane were examined using a Pearson correlation matrix. Significant correlations were detected between the percentage of hepatocytes with dilated endoplasmic reticulum and the concentrations of the pesticide aldrin (r = 0.600, df = 11, r crit(α = 0.05) = 0.553). Significant associations were also detected between the percentage of hepatocytes with disorganised endoplasmic reticulum and the concentrations of dieldrin and DDE residues in fish (r = 0.576, r = 0.567, respectively, df = 13, r crit (α = 0.05) = 0.514). However, there was little evidence that ultrastructural alterations in fish responded to increasing concentrations of these pesticides in a consistent dose-response manner. Laboratory measurements of oxygen consumption were made on Penaeus monodon (Fabricius) from protozoea to adult stage at temperatures between 15° and 35°C. The logarithmic relationship between weight-specific respiration rate (WRt) and temperature (T) for two size groups, Protozoea 1 (PZ1) to Postlarva 1 (PL1) and PL to adult, are given as; WRt=100.431+0.0146 (T) (ml O2 g-1 h-1) and WRt=10-0.948+0.0338 (T) (ml O2 g-1 h-1), respectively. Additionally, equations relating metabolic rate, temperature and size for the two size groups are; PZ1-PL1: log M=0.431+0.0146T+(1.25 (log TL)+0.579), and PL1-adult: log M=-0.948+0.0338T+(2.60(log CL)-0.683), where M=oxygen consumption in ml O2 individual -1h-1, T=temperature in °C, TL=total length in cm, and CL=carapace length in cm. Activation energies of 6 186.75 J for PZ1-PL1 and 14 066.62 J for PL-adults point to different metabolic pathways or to differences in the ratio between the metabolic pathways used.  相似文献

Despite the economic importance of oysters due to the high aquaculture production of several species, the current knowledge of oyster phylogeny and systematics is still fragmentary. In Europe, Ostrea edulis, the European flat oyster, and Ostreola stentina, the Provence oyster or dwarf oyster, are both present along the European and African, Atlantic and Mediterranean, coasts. In order to document the relationship not only between O. stentina and O. edulis, but also with the other Ostrea and Ostreola species, we performed a sequence analysis of the 16S mitochondrial fragment (16S rDNA: the large subunit rRNA-coding gene) and the COI fragment (COI: cytochrome oxidase subunit I). Oysters were sampled from populations in Portugal (two populations), Tunisia (two populations) and Morocco (one population), identified as O. stentina on the basis of shell morphological characters. Our data supported a high degree of differentiation between O. stentina and O. edulis and a close relationship between O. stentina and both Ostrea aupouria (from New Zealand) and Ostreola equestris (from Mexico Gulf/Atlantic). The status of this geographic disjunction between these closely related species is discussed. Furthermore, although identified in a separate genus Ostreola by Harry (Veliger 28:121–158, 1985), our molecular data on O. stentina, together with those available for the other two putative congeneric species, O. equestris and Ostreola conchaphila, would favour incorporation of Ostreola in Ostrea. Finally, a PCR-RFLP approach allowed the rapid identification of O. edulis and O. stentina.  相似文献

Hybridization experiments between seven north and south Atlantic Laminaria species were carried out. Morphologically normal F1 sporophytes developed from the following crosses among south Atlantic species: L. pallida x L. schinzii, L. pallida x L. abyssalis and L. schinzii x L. abyssalis. Normal F1 sporophytes also resulted from the crosses L. digitata (north Atlantic) x L. pallida (south Atlantic) and L. digitata (north Atlantic) x L. abyssalis (south Atlantic). Hybrids between north Atlantic L. ochroleuca and south Atlantic L. pallida, L. schinzii and L. abyssalis and between north Atlantic L. digitata and south Atlantic L. schinzii initially developed as normal sporophytes but became deformed later on and further development was retarded. No hybrids resulted from attempted crosses between northeastern Atlantic L. saccharina and L. abyssalis from Brazil. Temperature tolerance, relative growth rates and temperature demands for gametogenesis revealed the existence of a warm temperate group within the digitate Laminaria species consisting of L. ochroleuca, L. pallida, L. schinzii and L. abyssalis. Hybridization experiments and temperature responses suggest that north Atlantic L. digitata and L. ochroleuca are still similar to south Atlantic Laminaria species, confirming the speculation that a transequatorial migration of a warm-temperate L. ochroleuca-like ancestor may have taken place.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships and genetic population structures were analyzed for tideland gastropods in the genus Cerithidea around Japan on the basis of partial sequence of the mitochondrial COI gene. Large genetic divergence was shown between individuals of Cerithidea cingulata in the southern Ryukyus and those in the central Ryukyus and the Japanese Islands. Haplotypes of C. cingulata from the Japanese Islands were paraphyletic with the exclusion of a monophyletic group from the central Ryukyus. Genetic differentiation of C. cingulata was also detected between Amami-Oshima Island and Okinawajima Island. No genetic divergence was found between Cerithidea rhizophorarum in the Japanese Islands and its subspecies C. rhizophorarum morchii in the Ryukyu Islands. The lack of genetic divergence of Cerithidea largillierti between continental China and Japan suggests relatively recent migration between the Japanese Islands and the Asian continent. For all three Cerithidea species distributed in both the Japanese Islands and the Ryukyu Islands, the Tokara Gap and the Kerama Gap were shown to have acted as barriers to the dispersal.  相似文献

Macrophytes release allelochemicals, which affect pelagic cladocerans such as Daphnia. Using population growth experiments, we analysed the effects of allelochemicals from the macrophyte Egeria densa on the interaction between Daphnia mendotae and three littoral cladocerans (Diaphanosoma birgei, Macrothrix triserialis and Simocephalus mixtus). We found that allelochemicals from E. densa increased the abundance of all the tested cladocerans in spite of the presence of a competitor. This effect was stronger (nearly three to four times higher than in controls) for D. birgei and M. triserialis in the absence of D. mendotae. Independent of the presence of allelochemicals, S. mixtus, but not D. birgei and M. triserialis, reduced the abundance of D. mendotae as compared to controls. The rate of population increase (r) per day was significantly elevated due to the presence of Egeria’s allelochemicals (from 0.07–0.16?d?1 without allelochemicals against 0.12–0.24?d?1 with allelochemicals). In our competition experiments, the rates of population increase of the cladocerans were lower than those in single-species cultures when cultured in the absence of allelochemicals. However, in the presence of allelochemicals this trend was not consistent. Thus, the positive effects of Egeria’s allelochemicals over the cladoceran populations may enhance the grazing pressure on phytoplankton.  相似文献

The large nematode Oncholaimus oxyuris Ditlevsen, 1911 is a dominant predator in a shallow polyhaline brackish-water pond in Belgium. The reproductive potential of this species was calculated as the intrinsic rate of natural increase r=1/D In pN e , in which D is the generation time, p is the percentage of females, and N e is the number of eggs per female. The generation time varies between 570 days at 5°C and 101 days at 25°C and is the main factor in the determination of r. The relationship between r and temperature is nearly linear and is given by r=0.0013 T–0.0042. The reproductive potential of O. oxyuris is much lower than would be predicted from body size; this and the dominance of males in the population, is discussed in the light of the evolution of stable predator-prey systems.  相似文献

Electrophoretic variation in proteins encoded by 23 loci revealed substantial genetic differentiation among populations of bicolor damselfish (Eupomacentrus partitus) collected from four coral reefs in the Florida Keys, USA, during 1986–1988. Genetic differentiation was concentrated between a sample collected from Little Grecian Rocks Reef (LGR) and the remaining samples, including fish from a reef only 600 m distant (Grecian Rocks Reef). Genetic distinction of the LGR sample derived from significantly heterogenous allelic frequencies at six of eight polymorphic loci. Aco-1 (aconitase); Ada (adenosine deaminase); Gpi-2 (glucosephosphate isomerase); Ldh-2 and Ldh-3 (lactate dehydrogenase); and Me-1 (malic enzyme); nevertheless, differentiation at cytosolic aconitase (Aco-1) far exceeded that observed for other loci (fixation index, F ST=0.482), and differences in Aco-1 allele frequencies were largely responsible for large genetic distances (0.20) between LGR and the other reefs. Paradoxically, estimates of numbers of migrants exchanged between reefs per generation (mN e=17.47) indicated the potential for extensive gene flow. The extent of genetic differentiation among these populations is evaluated relative to models of population genetic structure based on equilibrium between gene flow and natural selection or genetic drift.  相似文献
