A study was conducted on the island of Mahé, Seychelles, on five species of chironomous larvae endemic to the island. The chironomous larvae were exposed to four heavy metals – copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and zinc (Zn), for a 96-hr period, and the LC50 values were calculated. It was observed that the most sensitive species of chironomous larvae was Gymnometriocnemus mahensis. The least sensitive form of chironomous larvae examined was Paramerina minima. The 96-hr LC50 values obtained for Tanypus complanatus for Cu, Cd, Hg, and Zn were 1.9 (1.73–2.09), 1.35 (1.17–1.57), 0.33 (0.26–0.43), and 28.96 (27.03–31.03) ppm, respectively. Carapidae (or pearlfish) are eel-like fishes that live inside different invertebrates, such as holothurians, sea stars, or bivalves. Those of the genus Carapus are commensal and use their host as a shelter, while Encheliophis species are parasitic and eat the hosts gonads. In areas where they live in sympatry, C. boraborensis, C. homei, C. mourlani and E. gracilis are able to inhabit the same host species. Infestation is considered as monospecific when several conspecifics are observed in the same host. However, many aspects of this particular relation remain obscure, e.g. communication between carapids and the defence systems of the different protagonists (carapids and hosts). Experiments have been conducted in the field and laboratory to investigate several aspects of the carapids relationships with their hosts. Sampling carried out in the Bay of Opunohu (Moorea, French Polynesia) determined the sex ratio of C. boraborensis (3:1) and C. homei (1:1) and their distribution rate within different Echinodermata. Our study showed that neither species was capable of determining whether a heterospecific already occupied a sea cucumber or not. They were, however, able to locate the sea cucumbers cloaca, due to the excurrent resulting from respiration. The sea cucumbers defence system (Cuverian tubules) minimises predator attacks, but is not effective against carapid intrusion. The Carapidae defence system is twofold. Due to a passive system related to the sea cucumbers low cloacal position, the Cuverian tubules are not expelled when fish enter the cloaca. Moreover, carapids resist sea cucumber toxins better than other reef fish. Their increased resistance might be related to their gills rather than to their mucus coating; however, the latter may assist the fish in resisting the sticky substances emitted by the Cuverian tubules.Communicated by S.A. By the 454 pyrosequencing technology, this research compared the bacterial communities in poplar plantation rhizosphere and bulk soil for an accurate understanding of bacterial community colonization in the two soil environments. The species annotation showed that rhizosphere soil contained 145 bacterial genera and bulk soil contained 141 bacterial genera, with 8 common genera shared by both at a relative abundance of more than 4%. The 8 genera in common were Acidobacterium GP1, Acidobacterium GP3, Acidobacterium GP6, Gemmatimonas, Bradyrhizobium, Burkholderia, Streptomyces and Acidobacterium GP4. The relative abundance of the same bacterial community was significantly different between rhizosphere and bulk soil environments. Alpha diversity analysis showed that the bacterial community diversity of rhizosphere soil was higher than that of bulk soil, but the difference was not significant. The results of bacterial communities sorting could reflect the variation of soil bacterial communities from rhizosphere to the bulk and the spatial variation among different sampling points, indicating a contribution of about 21.2% variance of bacterial communities by the effect of rhizosphere. Beta diversity analysis showed great difference between rhizosphere and bulk soil samples in bacterial community composition. There were 15 genera specific to rhizosphere soil and 11 to bulk soil. The abundance of 23 genera, mainly cellulose degrading bacteria and nitrogen-fixing bacteria, changed significantly. Selectivity of root to rhizosphere microorganisms is an important mechanism leading to significant differences in the rhizosphere microbial community composition and structure, which may significantly impact the carbon and nitrogen cycles of the root-soil interface.  相似文献

The paper examines the way in which the term ‘sustainable development’ has been used. Beginning with a short review of responses to a publication of the author's on sustainable development, it goes on to explore the different assumptions behind the discussion of the concept, and the different dimensions of sustainability: economic, political and epistemological. Using two analytical techniques (ICP‐AES and ASV) the heavy metal pollution of Arge? River was studied. These techniques are characterized by similar analytical performances.

The samples were collected from 13 sites starting from Capra Lake (altitude 2241 m) and finishing at Oltenita city (altitude 10 m).

Arge? River is the fifth longest river in Romania after Siret, Mure?, Olt and Some?, its length is 340 km and the river flows through four cities, Curtea de Arge?, Pite?ti, Gae?ti and Oltenita.

The results of the determinations of Cu, Cd, Zn and Pb, indicate that the Arge? River shows relatively low pollution.  相似文献

The current study represents a preliminary investigation made into the influence of cattle grazing in the area of a bauxite quarry (Comarnic–Poieni, Romania) on the cow milk chemistry. Weathering and surface runoff in the bauxite quarry contaminate the local chemistry of the soil, vegetation and water. During cattle transhumance, cyclic feeding patterns occur, with grazing alternating between clean pastures and the area of the quarry. Soil and water samples were collected from the contaminated area of the quarry. Raw milk samples were collected during two stages, corresponding to the periods of grazing on clean pasture and the quarry area, respectively. Based on the obtained data, the relationship between cattle grazing and the composition of milk was interpreted. Preliminary results indicated a direct correlation of increased concentration of Al in the milk, following grazing in the bauxite quarry.  相似文献

Physiological and biochemical properties of a marine agarolytic association of the bacterium Cytophaga diffluens and the infusorium Uronema marinum were investigated. The agarase activity of the association was shown to be higher than that of the pure bacterial culture at all growth stages under identical conditions. Maximum agarase activity of the association, and of the pure bacterial culture, was observed in a medium containing a small amount of organic nitrogen (0.1% yeast extract). Differential Pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (DPASV) was employed to measure Apparent Copper Complexing Capacity (Lt) and Stability Constants (Ks) of related cupric complexes of cell exudates of the phytoplanktonic alga Dunaliella salina. Three natural seawater samples collected 0.1, 2, 5 miles off the Tyrrhenian coast were used as culture medium. The measurements were carried out 1h and 7 days after the inoculum. Furthermore, on one culture the medium was passed through C18‐SEP‐PAK cartridges in order to separate the cell exudates. The results show that Dunaliella salina influences the value of Lt but does not affect the value of Ks . The C18SEP‐PAK retain only 50% of the ligands produced by the cells and capable of complexing copper.  相似文献

CuCl2 does not cause Trp+ reversion in E. coli WP2. However, when the bacteria are exposed to CuCl2 and UV‐irradiated, a greater than 3‐fold enhancement of mutagenesis (compared to UV alone) is seen at 30 μMCuCl2, and significant enhancement is seen even at 3 μM. The mechanism for this comutagenic effect was studied using a restriction fragment of the E. coli gpt gene. Whereas UV or CuCl2 alone caused few strand breaks, UV + CuCl2 induced breaks at every site. This reaction was blocked by KI, a free radical scavenger. While UV alone induced alkali‐labile sites, UV+ CuCl2 induced many more such sites and altered the sequence specificity. We suggest that at least some of the comutagenic effect might be due to hydroxyl radical formed via a Fenton reaction.  相似文献

Mercury concentrations in hair are typically used as a biomarker to assess exposure to mercury. A total of 108 hair samples were collected from residents (age range 5–73 years) of Wujiazhan town, northeast China, to determine total mercury concentrations. Hair mercury concentrations ranged from 0.16 to 199 mg kg–1 with an average value of 3.41 mg kg−1. The relationships between mercury concentration and gender and between hair mercury concentration and age were not significant. Overall, 16.7% of all samples were above the RfD value published by the United States Environmental Protection agency. The results indicate that there may be some been health risk from mercury exposure to the residents in the study area.  相似文献

For a precise evaluation of environmental and eco-toxicology effect of nitrification inhibitor on agroecosystem, the phytotoxicity of nitrification inhibitor should be fully understand. This paper aimed to study the phytotoxicity of thiourea and urea application on soybean seedlings. Effects of thiourea on the biomass, content of metal ions and chlorophyll level were studied in the leaves of soybean, and the effects of thiourea on anti-oxidative system (SOD, POD, and CAT) and content of MDA in the leaves of soybean were also investigated. The results showed that thiourea had great impact on the growth of soybean. Low concentration (1.0 mmol kg-1) of thiourea could slightly inhibit the growth of seedlings, and increase the activities of SOD, POD, CAT. Thiourea treatment of different concentrations had no effect on the content of Cu and Zn ion in soybean seedlings, but could obviously change the content of Mn and Fe ions in soybean seedlings. The content of Mn ion increased with the concentration of thiourea, from 18.58 mg kg-1 in the control to 45.45 mg kg-1 with 5 mmol kg-1 thiourea treatment. On the other hand, the content of Fe ion decreased with the concentration of thiourea, from 20.77 mg kg-1 in the control to 17.63 with 5 mmol kg-1 thiourea treatment. Heave inhibition effects and phytotoxic symptom were found in thriourea treatment of 5.0 mmol kg-1. The growth of seedlings was obviously inhibited; the content of chlorophyll in leaves of soybean decreased to 2.11 mg kg-1 compared to 3.56 mg kg-1 in that of the control. Simultaneously, the activities of SOD, POD, CAT and the content of MDA increased dramatically when thiourea reached 5.0 mmol kg-1. The heave inhibition effects and phytotoxic symptom in the soybean seedling indicated that thiourea could induce environmental stress in the seedlings.  相似文献

Education is an established tool to enhance human–environment relationships, despite the lack of empirical evidence to support its use. We used theories of change to unpack assumptions about the role of education in conservation. We interviewed practitioners from 15 conservation organizations in Madagascar to typify implicit pathways of change and assess whether emerging pathways echo theoretical advances. Five pathways were drivers of change: increasing knowledge, changing emotional connection and changing traditional cultural practices, fostering leaders, diversifying outcomes, and influencing community and society. These pathways reflect existing sociopsychological theories on learning and behavioral change. Most interviewees’ organizations had a predominant pathway that was often combined with elements from other pathways. Most pathways lacked culturally grounded approaches. Our research reveals assumptions about the role of education in conservation and indicates that organizations had different ideas of how change happens. The diversity of practices reflects the complexity of factors that influence behavior. Whether this diversity is driven by local sociocultural context, interaction with other conservation approaches, or contingencies remains unclear. Yet, typifying the pathways of change and reflecting on them is the first step towards comprehensive evaluation of when and which pathways and interactions to promote.  相似文献

Fire has shaped ecological communities worldwide for millennia, but impacts of fire on individual species are often poorly understood. We performed a meta-analysis to predict which traits, habitat, or study variables and fire characteristics affect how mammal species respond to fire. We modeled effect sizes of measures of population abundance or occupancy as a function of various combinations of these traits and variables with phylogenetic least squares regression. Nine of 115 modeled species (7.83%) returned statistically significant effect sizes, suggesting most mammals are resilient to fire. The top-ranked model predicted a negative impact of fire on species with lower reproductive rates, regardless of fire type (estimate = –0.68), a positive impact of burrowing in prescribed fires (estimate = 1.46) but not wildfires, and a positive impact of average fire return interval for wildfires (estimate = 0.93) but not prescribed fires. If a species’ International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List assessment includes fire as a known or possible threat, the species was predicted to respond negatively to wildfire relative to prescribed fire (estimate = –2.84). These findings provide evidence of experts’ abilities to predict whether fire is a threat to a mammal species and the ability of managers to meet the needs of fire-threatened species through prescribed fire. Where empirical data are lacking, our methods provide a basis for predicting mammal responses to fire and thus can guide conservation actions or interventions in species or communities.  相似文献

This review presents the status of knowledge about gasoline exhaust pollution and its impact biochemical and physiological characteristics of plants. Parameters on such as leaf conductance, membrane permeability, ascorbic acid, chlorophyll and relative water content have been used as indicators to assess the impact of gasoline exhaust pollution on plant health. Tolerant plants such as Mangifera indica Linn. are reported showing an insignificant decrease in the percentage of chlorophyll content (3.6%) and a significant increase in the percentage of ascorbic acid (84.6%) and sensitive plants such as Cassia fistula are reported showing a significant decrease in the percentage of chlorophyll (66.4%) as well as ascorbic acid (32.9%). In the case of ornamental plants, Dracaena deremensis has been reported to show an insignificant decrease in the chlorophyll content but a significant increase in the ascorbic acid, pH and relative water content, which were found to be in tolerant category, while Dianthus caryophyllus showed sensitive characteristics. Such plants can be used as sinks and bioindicators for gasoline exhaust pollution. Though several studies reported biochemical impacts of individual or combined exhaust gases on plant species, the cumulative effect of gasoline exhaust on plant species has not been studied extensively, especially in the developing countries.  相似文献

Habitat corridors, a common management strategy for increasing connectivity in fragmented landscapes, have experimentally validated positive influences on species movement and diversity. However, long-standing concerns that corridors could negatively impact native species by spreading antagonists, such as disease, remain largely untested. Using a large-scale, replicated experiment, we evaluated whether corridors increase the incidence of plant parasites. We found that corridor impacts varied with parasite dispersal mode. Connectivity provided by corridors increased incidence of biotically dispersed parasites (galls on Solidago odora) but not of abiotically dispersed parasites (foliar fungi on S. odora and three Lespedeza spp.). Both biotically and abiotically dispersed parasites responded to edge effects, but the direction of responses varied across species. Although our results require additional tests for generality to other species and landscapes, they suggest that, when establishing conservation corridors, managers should focus on mitigating two potential negative effects: the indirect effects of narrow corridors in creating edges and direct effects of corridors in enhancing connectivity of biotically dispersed parasites.  相似文献

Salt marsh succession after de-embankment was monitored on the East Frisian barrier island Langeoog by investigating permanent plots. Seventy years after embankment salt marsh plants were once again influenced mainly by the tidal regime. From 2002 to 2004 the former high marsh and glycophytic vegetation died out and was replaced by species of lower salt marsh zones. Nitrophytic halophytes like Suaeda maritima, Atriplex prostrata and Artemisia maritima established first because of the high nutrient content in the soil, a direct result of former vegetation decay. With decreasing nitrogen afterwards other species became more competitive. Until 2007 Atriplex portulacoides became more dominant in the lower marsh and Elymus athericus reached dominance in areas where grazing has been abandoned in the high marsh. The dynamics in the study area is much lower than in natural marshes due to the still existing drainage system. Therefore vegetation units with low species diversity are widespread.  相似文献

The factors affecting the solubilisation of metals during digestion of food have been examined in a two‐stage model system comprising simulated gastric and intestinal juices. The solubilisation of iron, copper and zinc was examined in digests of white and wholemeal bread. Zinc solubility was principally governed by pH and the simulated digestion had little additional effect. In contrast both iron and copper solubility were markedly affected by digestion of the bread. In the case of copper the enzymolysis increased solubility appreciably at neutral pH. All of the cadmium in a simulated gastric digest of canned crab meat was associated with soluble low molecular weight species of less than 1000 daltons. Cadmium solubility resulted from the acidic conditions of the digest rather than enzymatic solubilisation of binding proteins. Ninety percent of the cadmium in the digest became rebound to the insoluble fraction on adjustment to pH7.0. Subsequent simulated intestinal digestion increased the level of soluble cadmium to 20%; 1.0–1.5% was associated with soluble species in the range 26,000–37,000 daltons and 15.0–20.0% with soluble species of less than 3,000 daltons.  相似文献
