Several sets of plankton and hyperbenthos samples were collected from the Seine estuary in late May-early June of 1991, 1992 and 1994, and the abundance, size-frequency, horizontal and vertical distribution, and short-term fluctuations of Pleurobrachia pileus (O.F. Müller, 1776) were determined. In the Seine estuary, P. pileus was more abundant than reported for any other European shallow waters. Its depth-averaged density was 33 individuals m-3 in 1991 and 32 individuals m-3 in 1992, with a maximum density of 808 individuals m-3. The ctenophores displayed passive tidal advection and active diel vertical migration. In the outer estuary, high abundances were observed around low tide, and diel vertical migration was very pronounced. However, many individuals remained aggregated near the bottom at all times. In spring, the distribution of P. pileus coincided with the 33 and 150 S isohalines, with high abundances on the marine side of the estuary. It is suggested that aggregation of ctenophores near the bottom and diel vertical migration play an important role in the retention of P. pileus in the estuary. Two schemes of P. pileus life cycle in the Bay of Seine are proposed.  相似文献

Marine copepods commonly exhibit vertical movements in the water column over the diel cycle, termed diel vertical migration (DVM), with the most common pattern being an ascent in the water column to minimum depth around sunset and descent to maximum depth around sunrise. The present study characterized the DVM pattern of the pontellid copepod Calanopia americana Dahl in the Newport River estuary (North Carolina, USA, in July 2003). The estuary is shallow and well-mixed, and the study site (34°43N; 76°40W), 1.5 km inside the estuary entrance, is unusual in lying within a gyre where tidal currents are always in the seaward direction. Changes in C. americana vertical abundance were related to spectrally relevant changes in light throughout the diel cycle. Simultaneous measurements of light and zooplankton abundance near the surface (0.5 m depth) and near the bottom (0.5 m above bottom) were made over one 4-h period and two 3-day periods during different phases of the tide. These observations suggest that C. americana undertook twilight DVM in the Newport River estuary; an ascent to the surface occurred at sunset, followed by a descent to near the bottom around midnight, with a second ascent to the surface and then descent to near bottom at sunrise. DVM in C. americana was independent of the tidal cycle, with the initial ascent in the water column at sunset possibly associated with relative rates of irradiance change. Copepod vertical movements were consistent with a night-active endogenous rhythm, and appeared independent of the abundance of predatory chaetognaths, Sagitta spp. In DVM studies with migrators like C. americana that are broadly sensitive to visible wavelengths of light, measuring photosynthetically active radiation may be a reasonable alternative to measuring light in a spectrally relevant photometric unit.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00227-005-1569-x.Communicated by J.P. To elucidate roles of cysts in occurrences of Heterosigma akashiwo blooms, cyst dynamics were studied in northern Hiroshima Bay, the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, where H. akashiwo regularly forms red tide in June. Monthly measurements of seasonal changes in the densities of vegetative cells of H. akashiwo and their germinable cysts in surface sediments (top 1-cm layer) were made for 2 years at three stations. Vegetative cells of H. akashiwo could be detected from April through December throughout the water column, and the existence of vegetative cells was confirmed in surface waters even in winter after incubation of sampled seawater in culture medium. Germinable cysts, enumerated by the extinction dilution method, existed in sediments in all seasons, even before and after the seasonal bloom. The effects of incubation temperature on the germination of natural cysts of H. akashiwo in sediments were examined. Germination was not observed at 5 °C, was low at 10 °C, while it increased at 15 °C, and maintained a high level to 25 °C. The bottom water temperature reached 15 °C (suitable for the germination of cysts) and the surface about 18 °C or more (suitable for the growth of vegetative cells) 2 to 3 weeks before the blooms. The dark survival of H. akashiwo cysts was tested, and it was found that the cysts were viable for at least 650 d at 11 °C, and for 165 d at 25 °C, indicating a significant role of cysts in the survival during winter and summer seasons. The cysts presumably also play an important role in seeding primary populations into water columns when the bottom water reaches a suitable temperature (around 15 °C); thereafter the populations develop with great annual regularity to bloom in June. These results suggest that initiation of H. akashiwo red tides in the Seto Inland Sea could be triggered by bottom water temperature. Received: 3 July 1998 / Accepted: 12 January 1999  相似文献

Electron microscopical observations on algal samples collected in 1992 in the middle or final stages of a red tide in Hiroshima Bay, Japan, revealed virus-like particles (VLPs) in the red tide alga Heterosigma akashiwo (Class Raphidophyceae). The host cells appeared moribund and the VLPs were located in and around the nuclear area. The VLPs were icosahedral, ca. 185 nm in diameter, and generated from the periphery of several viroplasms. VLPs were also observed in three other types of H. akashiwo-like cells, which were morphologically distinguishable from each other. The appearance of VLPs in the red tide alga could explain the dramatically rapid termination of this red tide.  相似文献

The ontogenetic diel vertical migration of the planktonic copepodCalanus sinicus was investigated in the Inland Sea of Japan in summer 1988, when the water was thermally stratified with a thermocline of ca 5 °C between 35 and 45 m. Stage-specific differences in the diel vertical migration behavior ofC. sinicus were found. Eggs were spawned primarily within the surface-waters between midnight and dawn by ascending females, and sank gradually to deeper waters until they hatched into nauplii. Non-feeding nauplius stages (NI and II) were distributed throughout the water column, but the first feeding stage (NIII) performed an ontogenetic upward migration. NIV to VI and copepodite (C) stages I to III continuously aggregated in the phytoplankton-rich euphotic layer. However, the depth of the median CI to III populations descended as stage progressed. The onset of prominent diel vertical migration took place in CIV, and the amplitude of vertical migration increased with age, being maximal in adult females (CVI). Adult males (CVI), however, remained in the layer below 20 m, and did not migrate dielly. The ecological significance of ontogenetic diel vertical migration is discussed.  相似文献

The pattern of diel vertical migration and the trophic interactions of moon jelly (Aurelia sp.) were investigated in the sea lakes of Mljet Island (Adriatic Sea) where this scyphomedusa is present throughout the year. Water column characteristics, plankton and in situ behaviour of Aurelia were followed over several 24-h cycles (6–8 times during each cycle) from the surface to the bottom (44 m). Aurelia exhibited a consistent pattern of diel vertical migration. Most of the time Aurelia were located at the bottom of the thermocline layer at temperatures lower than 19°C. Aurelia migrated towards the surface at dusk when the majority was found within the thermocline or just above it. During the night the medusae sank into the deepest layers below 25 m. The main medusa food items inferred from stomach contents were small adult copepods like Oithona nana and Paracalanus parvus and copepodites of small calanoids and cyclopids. In addition, in situ feeding experiments indicated high clearance rates for nauplii and naked ciliates and clear response of bacterial populations pointing to indirect cascade effects of Aurelia on microbial in addition to classical food web.  相似文献

Heterocapsa triquetra (Ehrenberg) Stein is a phototrophic marine dinoflagellate with wide coastal distribution. It is known to be capable of mixotrophy and diel vertical migration. The species was particularly abundant in the Gulf of Finland (the Baltic Sea) during the summers of 1996 and 1998, leading to discolouration of water on the south-west coast of Finland. Large-scale (50 m3) coastal mesocosm experiments in the north-west Gulf of Finland (the Baltic Sea) in the summers of 1996 and 1998 with daily mineral nutrient additions provoked a biomass increase of phytoplankton dominated by H. triquetra. From the first days of the experiment temporary cysts of H. triquetra were found in the bottom sediment water of the mesocosms. Maximum temporary cyst production rates reached values up to 20×106 cysts m–2 day–1, accounting for <1% of the depth-integrated motile population size. The environmental features favouring temporary cyst production remain uncertain; zooplankton grazing and nutrient stress are potential factors. Temporary cysts of H. triquetra were observed in a unialgal culture (f/2 medium) isolated in summer 1999 from Eel Pond (Woods Hole, Mass., USA).Communicated by M. Kühl, Helsingør  相似文献

The pelagic crustacean Euphausia pacifica Hansen was sampled with a multiple-sample 1.0 m2 Tucker trawl and a multiple-sample 1.0 m2 vertical net in Dabob Bay, Washington on 17 dates between May 1985 and October 1987. Size (stage) structure and abundance of the population were determined for each date, while vertical distribution and diel migration were determined for 13 dates. Although internannual variability in both timing and magnitude of events occurred, consistent patterns were discernable. The population produced a large pulse of larvae (2 to 5 mm) in late spring of each year, apparently in response to the vernal phytoplankton bloom. Much lower abundances of larvae occurred during summer and autumn of each year, and larvae were completely absent during winter. Recruitment to the juvenile (6 to 9 mm) and adult (10 mm) stages was strongest during the summer, with abundances of these individuals peaking in summer and autumn. Individual growth rates, determined by modal progression analysis, were calculated for E. pacifica. Rates ranged from zero for some adult cohorts during the winter to 0.12 mm d-1 for larvae during spring. The latter are among the highest ever reported for this species in the field. The vertical distributions and diel vertical migrations (DVM) of E. pacifica varied seasonally and between size (stage) classes. At night, all size classes were distributed in the surface layer (upper 25 m) irrespective of season or year. During the day, the larger/older stages were always distributed at middepths (50 to 125 m). In contrast, the daytime distribution of the larvae was more variable, being concentrated at the surface during spring and early summer of 1985, and at increasing depths later in the summer and autumn of 1985 and again in spring of 1986. This resulted in invariant DVM in the juveniles and adults, but variable DVM in the larvae, the latter of which is hypothesized to be a response to variable abundances of zooplanktivorous fish.  相似文献

The vertical distribution, diel gut pigment content and oxygen consumption of Calanus euxinus were studied in April and September 1995 in the Black Sea. Gut pigment content of C. euxinus females was associated with diel vertical migration of the individuals, and it varied with depth and time. Highest gut pigment content was observed during the nighttime, when females were in the chlorophyll a (chl a) rich surface waters, but significant feeding also occurred in the deep layer. Gut pigment content throughout the water column varied from 0.8 to 22.0 ng pigment female–1 in April and from 0.2 to 21 ng pigment female–1 in September 1995. From the diel vertical migration pattern, it was estimated that female C. euxinus spend 7.5 h day–1 in April and 10.5 h day–1 in September in the chl a rich surface waters. Daily consumption by female C. euxinus in chl a rich surface waters was estimated by taking into account the feeding duration and gut pigment concentrations. Daily carbon rations of female C. euxinus, derived from herbivorous feeding in the euphotic zone, ranged from 6% to 11% of their body carbon weight in April and from 15% to 35% in September. Oxygen consumption rates of female and copepodite stage V (CV) C. euxinus were measured at different temperatures and at different oxygen concentrations. Oxygen consumption rates at oxygen-saturated concentration ranged from an average of 0.67 g O2 mg–1 dry weight (DW) h–1 at 5°C to 2.1 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 23°C for females, and ranged from 0.48 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 5°C to 1.5 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 23°C for CVs. The rate of oxygen consumption at 16°C varied from 0.62 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 0.65 mg O2 l–1 to 1.57 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 4.35 mg O2 l–1 for CVs, and from 0.74 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 0.57 mg O2 l–1 to 2.24 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 4.37 mg O2 l–1 for females. From the oxygen consumption rates, daily requirements for the routine metabolism of females were estimated, and our results indicate that the herbivorous daily ration was sufficient to meet the routine metabolic requirements of female C. euxinus in April and September in the Black Sea.Communicated by O. A dense dinoflagellate bloom of Gyrodinium aureolum Hulburt in a shallow temperate zone estuary was monitored during the summers of 1982 and 1983. The bloom was typically extremely localized, its densest part exceeding 1000g chlorophyll a liter-1 (2x104 cells ml-1). The bloom began at temperatures between 24.5° and 27°C, existed at as high as 30°C and terminated when water temperature dropped to between 19° and 22°C. The highest specific growth rate measured was 0.90d-1 (1.3 divisions d-1) and near the termination of the bloom decreased to 0.28d-1 (0.4 divisions d-1). A diel vertical migration of the bloom was observed. A box model analysis, based on division rates, vertical migration and water circulation patterns, indicated that the bloom must move downward at the estuary mouth to maintain itself in the estuary, either by means of a convergence system or by downward swimming. High growth rate, low grazing pressure, and a stratified water column are proposed to stimulate bloom formation. Decreasing growth rate appeared to reduce the intensity of the bloom and finally allowed its disappearance by estuarine flushing and mixing.Communicated by J. M. Shick, Orono  相似文献

Chattonella marina, a raphidophycean flagellate, is a highly toxic red tide phytoplankton which causes severe damage to fish farming. Recent studies demonstrated that Chattonella spp. continuously release superoxide anions (O2 ) while they are living. Heterosigma akashiwo, another raphidophycean flagellate, also produces O2 . In the present study, we found that lectins such as concanavalin A (Con A), wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), and castor bean hemagglutinin (CBH) stimulated  C. marina and H. akashiwo to generate enhanced amounts of O2 in a concentration-dependent manner. The lectin-specific sugars potently inhibited the lectin-induced increase of O2 production, suggesting that the effects of lectins are mediated mainly through the interaction of these lectins with carbohydrate moiety present on the flagellate cell surface. In contrast to the potent ability of native Con A (tetravalent), succinylated Con A (divalent) showed only a slight stimulative effect on these flagellates. O2 production was totally inhibited by treatment with proteinase K for 30 min, without affecting the viabilities of flagellates. These results suggest that cell-surface redox enzymes may be involved in O2 production, and such enzymes are responsible for the lectin-stimulation. In an attempt to clarify the surface structure of Heterosigma akashiwo, the organisms were processed by a series of currently utilized methods for carbohydrate and protein histochemistry of light microscopy. The results indicated that: (1) H. akashiwo cell has previously undetected glycocalyx on the cell surface; (2) this extracellular structure consists of at least two different types of acidic complex carbohydrates, sulfated and non-sulfated, together with a neutral carbohydrate-protein complex with 1,2-glycol groups and -d-mannosyl and -d-glucosyl residues; (3) a particular moiety of acidic complex carbohydrates involved in the glycocalyx is presumably hyaluronic acid or a closely related substance; and (4) the histochemical nature of the glycocalyx on the cell surface of the present species is comparable with that of Chattonella antiqua, excluding a difference in the nature of the neutral carbohydrate-protein complex.  相似文献

Vertical distribution, chlorophylla (chla) and phaeopigment concentrations in the gut, and natural nitrogen isotope ratio ( 15N) were investigated for pelagic amphipodsThemisto japonica (Bovallius) collected from the Sea of Japan in July 1987. Differences in diel vertical migration behavior were clearly observed between small and largeT. japonica. Many small (<5 mm body length) amphipods appeared in the phytoplankton-rich shallow layers. Their gut pigment concentrations were higher (mean 0.52 ± 0.15µg chla g–1 amphipod) than those of large amphipods (mean 0.33±0.14µg g–1); this implies that the amphipods fed on a large amount of phytoplankton during the early stage of life. The 15N values of small amphipods were lower (5.7 to 6.3) than those of large amphipods (6.8 to 11.7), reflecting the lower trophic level of small amphipods compared to large ones. The 15N values for small amphipods were similar to those of herbivorous zooplankton. The amphipods' feeding behavior thus changes from herbivorous to carnivorous as they grow.  相似文献

Seventeen Longhurst Hardy Plankton Recorder profiles were taken over a diel cycle in January 1990 to study the feeding of four major copepods over the South Georgia shelf. Ontogenetic changes in vertical migration were followed and feeding cycles determined by gut fluorometry for Calanoides acutus Stage CV, Calanus sinillimus CV and CVI, C. propinquus CV and Rhincalanus gigas CV and CVI. In common with a neighbouring oceanic site visited two weeks later and reported elsewhere, all four species had a diel cycle of feeding and migration. The vertical distributions of C. simillimus (all stages), R. gigas (nauplii) and Euphausia frigida (postlarvae) were similar at both sites, the night being spent within the chlorophyll maximum at 15 to 30 m. However, the biomass dominants, C. acutus and R. gigas, dwelt below the chlorophyll maximum, about 30 m deeper than their oceanic counterparts. Unlike the oceanic site, feeding at the shelf site was not restricted to darkness, but increased 6 to 10 h before nightfall and finished at dawn; the intervening period coincided with sinking and digestion. Daylight feeding may have been induced by the shorter night, lower light levels or greater food requirements at the shelf site, despite planktonic predators being over three times more abundant. Daily ration estimates for R. gigas at both sites were only 2% body carbon per day. These low values contrast with its smaller competirors, whose rations were in the range 5.6 to 27%.  相似文献

The diel vertical migration of copepods from intermdiate water layers of the Tyrrhenian and Adtiatic Seas has been studied on the basis of plankton samples made from depths down to 1000 m, with a Nansen net, mesh size 250 , diameter 113 cm. The species considered display two different patterns of migration: (1) nocturnal ascent, e.g. Pleuromamma abdominalis and Euchaeta acuta; (2) nocturnal descent, e.g. species of the genera Spinocalanus, Scaphocalanus, Temoropia, Mormonilla and Oncaea. These two patterns are compared on the pasis of the dimensions of the species and of their different capacities for active movement. Ililumination is considered to be the most important factor influencing vertical movements. The behaviour of Pleuromamma gracilis is also described, the adult population of which is divided in two discrete sections, each one showing a different pattern of migration.  相似文献

The marine copepod Calanopia americana Dahl undergoes twilight diel vertical migration (DVM) in the Newport River estuary, North Carolina, USA, in synchrony with the light:dark cycle. Copepods ascend to the surface at sunset, descend to the bottom around midnight, and make a second ascent and descent before sunrise. Behavioral assays with C. americana in the laboratory during fall 2002/2003 and summer 2004 investigated aspects of three hypotheses for the proximate role of light in DVM: (1) preferendum hypothesis (absolute irradiance), (2) rate of change hypothesis (relative rates of irradiance change), and (3) endogenous rhythm hypothesis. Results suggest that C. americana responds to exogenous light cues consistent with its DVM pattern; changes in absolute irradiance evoked swimming responses that would result in an ascent at sunset and descent at sunrise, while relative rates of irradiance decrease at sunset (–0.0046 s–1) evoked an ascent response, and relative rates of irradiance increase at sunrise (0.0042 s–1) evoked a descent response. Furthermore, C. americana expressed an endogenous rhythm in vertical migration that was positively correlated with field observations of twilight DVM. Collectively, these results indicate that both exogenous light cues and endogenous rhythms play a proximate role in twilight DVM of C. americana, providing redundancy in the causes of its vertical migration.Communicated by J.P. The migration capacity of red-tide species in the natural environment was studied at a station in the Ría de Vigo (Rías Bajas, NW Spain) over a 24 h period in September 1991. The Ría de Vigo, where red tides are frequent, normally shows a positive estuarine circulation and is subjected to seasonal upwelling and downwelling phenomena. A marked diel pattern was observed for five species that are capable of causing red tides (Ceratium furca, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Dinophysis acuminata, Mesodinium rubrum, and Eutreptiella sp.). Such diel behaviour could be clearly advantageous in a stratified environment where light and nutrients are often in two separate layers. Active movement enables species such as dinoflagellates and some ciliates to exploit high levels of irradiance at the surface during the day and to take up nutrients in deeper layers at night. Patchy distribution of phytoplankton, shear-induced horizontal dispersion and density variations were considered, but none of them accounted for the vertical changes observed. Vertical migration is thought to be one of the mechanisms that could promote blooms in nutrient-depleted surface layers.  相似文献

The ontogenetic diel vertical migration of the planktonic copepod Calanus sinicus was investigated in the Inland Sea of Japan in June 1989, when the water column was thermally weakly stratified. Because of fewer eggs and less variation in their abundance, nocturnal spawning was not apparent. A pronounced upward migration occurred in NIII. NIII to CIII resided in the upper 20 m layer throughout the day, and from CIV on their median depths descended. CV and adult females underwent significant diel vertical migration, whereas adult males did not migrate. By integrating the results from the present study and those from our previous investigations (in August–September 1988, November 1988 and March 1989), we review seasonal variation in the ontogenetic diel vertical migration of C. sinicus. Spawning was largely nocturnal, reaching its maximum level around dawn, but spawning depth and fecundity changed seasonally. The distribution of pre-feeding stages, NI and NII, was similar to that of eggs. A pronounced upward migration always occurred in the first feeding stage, NIII, and late nauplii and early copepodites always resided in the food-rich upper layer, indicating that upward migration by NIII is feeding migration. As the stages progressed, they extended their vertical distribution range, and CV and adult females usually underwent diel vertical migration. However, the pattern and strength of this migration differed seasonally. Their day depths increased with the increase of relative biomass of planktivorous fish, indicating that predator avoidance induces their diurnal downward migration. High chlorophyll a concentrations in the upper layer (<15 m deep) relative to the lower layer (>20 m deep) amplified their diel vertical migrations. Diel vertical migration of C. sinicus is a phenotypic behavior.  相似文献

From November 1980 to February 1981 the concentration of oxygen dissolved in the surface mixed layer of the oligotrophic Caribbean Sea off Curaçao was quite constant (420.77±1.98 g at l-1). However, immediately following enclosure in 4500-1 plastic bags reaching to a depth of 5 m the oxygen concentration began to decrease, down to values below saturation (405 g at l-1) within 48 h. Autotrophic and heterotrophic nanoplankton cell numbers and algal pigments in bags remained constant or increased slightly during the first 24 h of enclosure. The rate of decrease in oxygen concentration in bags was significantly higher during daylight hours than in the night, which suggests that photo-oxidative processes were involved in the additional daytime loss of oxygen. The dramatic enclosure effect on the oxygen content of the water in the bags can be taken as evidence of the dependence of the oxygen concentration near the tropical ocean's surface on supply from below: in water freely circulating in the euphotic zone deviations from the mean oxygen concentration during a diurnal cycle were 0.47% at most, differential losses near the surface being counteracted through vertical exchange; while in water separated from the rest of the mixed layer in the plastic bags losses due to respiration of the enclosed plankton community plus an even greater loss, assigned to non-biological, photosensitized oxidation processes, were up to 10 g at O2 l-1 in 24 h. Although photo-oxidation is confined to the very surface the oxygen flux involved may be important enough to necessitate consideration of a photochemically induced loss factor in oxygen budget calculations, e.g. when primary production is to be estimated from diurnal oxygen curves.  相似文献

Availability of colloidal ferric oxides to coastal marine phytoplankton   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Cell growth of a coastal marine diatom, Phaeodactylum tricornutum (stock cultures), and two red tide marine flagellates, Heterosigma akashiwo and Gymnodinium mikimotoi (stock cultures), in the presence of soluble chelated Fe(III)-EDTA (1:2) and of four different phases of ferric oxide colloids were experimentally measured in culture experiments at 20°C under 3000 lux fluorescent light. Soluble Fe(III)-EDTA induced the maximal growth rates and cell yields. The short-term uptake rate of iron by H. akashiwo in Fe(III)-EDTA medium was about eight times faster than that in solid amorphous hydrous ferric oxide (Fe2O3·xH2O) medium. In culture experiments supplied with four different ferric oxide forms, the orders of cell yields are amorphous hydrous ferric oxide>-FeOOH (lepidocrocite)>Fe5O7(OH)·4H2O (hydrated ferric oxyhydroxide polymer >-FeOOH (goethite). The specific growth rates () at logarithmic growth phase in Fe(III)-EDTA, amorphous hydrous ferric oxide and -FeOOH media were significantly greater than those in Fe5O7 (OH)·4H2O and -FeOOH media. The thermodynamically stable forms such as Fe5O7(OH)·4H2O and -FeOOH supported a little or no phytoplankton growth. The iron solublities and/or proton-promoted iron dissolution rates of these colloidal ferric oxides in seawater at 20°C were determined by simple filtration techniques involving -activity measurements of 59Fe. The orders of solubilities and estimated dissolution rate constants of these ferric oxides in seawater were consistent with that of cell yields in the culture experiments. These results suggest that the availability of colloidal iron to provide a source of iron for phytoplankton is related to the thermodynamic stability and kinetic lability of the colloidal ferric oxide phases, which probably control the uptake rate of iron by phytoplankton.  相似文献
