Uptake of 109Cd in freshly caught sea-skaters Halobates nereis and H. flaviventris was measured under the influence of abiotic parameters as salinity and stable Cd concentration. After 6 d of accumulation a concentration factor of 8 over the seawater level was reached with no indication for an equilibration. The calculated biological half-life of 109Cd amounted to 9.3 d. Cadmium uptake from food (wingless Drosophila sp. flies reared on cadmium enriched agar) can be considerable. A large pond-skater Limnogonus fossarum, measured for comparative purposes, accumulated cadmium, but at a much lower rate. The results are discussed with respect to observed natural cadmium concentrations in open ocean sea-skater populations. 相似文献

Sea-skaters, Halobates robustus Barber, caught around the Galápagos Islands, were exposed over a period of 3 days to radioactive cadmium dissolved in seawater. Although 115mCd (metastable 115Cd) was accumulated by the insects, they did not concentrate it above the seawater level. The experiments clearly showed that cadmium is taken up into the body, not merely adsorbed onto surfaces. The uptake of Cd followed a biphasic time course. When sea-skaters labelled in this way were transferred back into unlabelled seawater, the rate of loss of Cd was likewise biphasic. During uptake and loss, the biological half-life times for the first compartments were almost identical (0.64 and 0.79 h), indicating that the same compartment might be involved. On the other hand, the biological half-life times for the second compartments were different (1.7 days during uptake, 19.5 days during loss), indicating that the site or chemical form of bound Cd in the sea-skater had changed. For an adult female, weighing about 8.5 mg wet weight, the drinking rate of seawater was estimated at 2.5 l day-1, equivalent to 29% body weight. 相似文献

Five pelagic Halobates species occupy a vast area from 40∘ north to 40∘ south in the three major oceans. Oceanic diffusion, constantly acting to disperse these insects, must be an important factor
in determining their life history and distribution. We investigated the effects of oceanic diffusion on the following aspects
of these insects. (1) The estimated radius of a patch of Halobates could be expanded by oceanic diffusion alone from an initial point of origin to 1250 km in 60 d. This distance is about 1/12
of the maximum distributional range of H. micans in the Pacific Ocean. Mutual encounter rates due to oceanic turbulence could be as high as 11 d−1 even at low population densities (100 ind km−2). This suggests that individuals from their original habitat could find mates even when they had been carried a long distance.
Thus, extensive gene mixing may occur over the whole range of a species' distribution. (2)␣Estimated growth rates are rather
low (0.0026 to 0.0079 d−1) compared with those of other insects. However, they are offset by a long life span (over 90 d) and an extended oviposition
period (perhaps over 2␣months). Thus, pelagic Halobates spp. appear to have adopted a strategy of slow growth and prolonged longevity to cope with living in an unstable physical
environment that is constantly disturbed by storms and winds.

Between February 1978 and February 1981, the content of cadmium was measured (1) in specimens of Halobates sericeus picked out from regurgitates of 9 species of seabirds, and (2) in the feathers of some seabirds which nested on 8 islands or atolls in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. In the 4 major avian predators of this oceanskater, the Cd concentrations increased from roughly 2 to 8 g g-1 dry wt towards the northwest, over a linear distance of about 1500 km. The correlation between Cd levels in the insects and in the feathers of their predators suggests that this heavy metal is transmitted along the food chain. 相似文献

Summary Males of the water strider Gerris elongatus established territories which included copulation and oviposition sites (small pieces of fallen bamboo). Males were aggressive and competition for territory and females was observed frequently. Male midlegs were more developed than female midlegs and were used as weapons. Reproductive behaviour changed as the breeding season advanced. Early in the season immature females were attracted by male surface wave courtship signals, then copulated white floating on the water surface without ovipositing (type 1). In midseason, males established territories, produced calling signals and attracted females which copulated and oviposited there with male postcopulatory guarding (type 2). In late season, many females oviposited without postcopulatory guarding on pondweed mats near fallen bamboo. Non-territorial males waiter for the arrival of these females and copulated without courtship, but mating success was low (type 3). These alternative mating strategies appeared to depend on differences in male size. Larger males were superior to smaller males in many ways (establishing territory, fighting, mating etc.). The largest males defended territories and had higher mating success than small non-territorial males. Medium sized males used all three strategies according to the number of empty territories and seasonal femald distribution. 相似文献

Five species of the marine insect Halobates share similar ecology but have distinct biogeographic ranges in the eastern tropical Pacific, a region from approximately 75°W–160°W and 10°S–35°N. Between 2001 and 2010, the Sea Education Association collected Halobates from 682 neuston tows (surface net 1 m × 0.5 m, 335-μm mesh) during fifteen cruises between San Diego, USA, Mexico and Tahiti. Total Halobates spp. densities varied substantially from year to year, but our data do not show a sustained change from a data set collected 40 years earlier from 1967 to 1968 (Cheng and Shulenberger in Fish Bull 78(3):579–591, 1980). Halobates are sensitive to sea surface temperature and we observed significant differences in species distributions over time, but these were not due to differences in water temperature or climate change. Our analyses show that the patterns observed are attributable to substantial but previously undescribed seasonal shifts that occur each year in the ranges for both Halobates sobrinus and Halobates micans. There is substantial overlap in ranges during seasonal shifts, but very little co-occurrence of H. sobrinus and H. micans in individual net tows, suggesting biological mechanisms rather than physical factors are restricting distribution and co-occurrence of these two species. 相似文献

Relatively few insects have invaded the marine environment, and only five species of sea skaters, Halobates Eschscholtz (Hemiptera: Gerridae), have successfully colonized the surface of the open ocean. All five species occur in the
Pacific Ocean, H. germanus White also occurs in the Indian Ocean, whereas H. micans Esch- scholtz is the only species found in the Atlantic Ocean. We sequenced a 780 bp long region of the mitochondrial cytochrome
oxidase subunit I gene (COI) for a total of 66 specimens of the five oceanic Halobates species. Our purpose was to investigate the genetic variation within species and estimate the amount of gene flow between
populations. We defined 27 haplotypes for H. micans and found that haplotype lineages from each of the major oceans occupied by this species are significantly different, having
sequences containing five to seven unique base substitutions. We conclude that gene flow between populations of H. micans inhabiting the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Ocean is limited and hypothesize that these populations have been separated
for 1 to 3 million years. Similarly, there may be limited gene flow between H. germanus populations found in the Pacific and Indian Ocean and between H. sericeus populations inhabiting the northern and southern parts of the Pacific Ocean. Finally, we discuss our findings in relation
to recent hypotheses about the influence of oceanic diffusion on the distribution and population structure of oceanic Halobates spp.

Our knowledge of the horizontal distribution of heavy metals in the open ocean with time and space is still very incomplete. Complementary to chemical water analyses suitable biological indicator species may be used to fill this gap. The pleuston organism Halobates micans was collected from 1966 to 1987 at 151 sampling stations of the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean. The cadmium data from more than 1000 individuals analysed display a chemicaloceanographic meaningful distribution in surface waters and compare favourably to primary production values. Chemical analysis of individual plankton species offer a new tool for a better understanding of geochemical cycling of heavy metals in the ocean. 相似文献

Summary We studied oviposition, feeding and mating behavior of the water striders Limnoporus dissortis and L. notabilis in sympatric and allopatric populations occurring on semi-permanent ponds in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. Here we describe the mating system of the species and consider the evolution and maintenance of reproductive strategies employed by both sexes. Females of both species oviposited along edges of floating vegetation, either with a guarding, postcopulatory male in attendance, or alone and independent of copulation. Some females ovipositing alone were discovered by males, and when pressed for copulation, either (1) abandoned oviposition or (2) copulated and then resumed oviposition. Females that oviposited with a guarding male laid more eggs than those that completed oviposition alone. Most breeding females accepted prey offered experimentally, while a large proportion of males rejected prey but responded to model gerrids with aggressive displays and mating behavior. Males displayed three mating tactics: (1) territorial-signaling (TS), (2) patrol-signaling (PS), and (3) silent patrolling (SP). All territorial males produced surface waves from oviposition sites before attempting to mate. Some patrolling males signaled, while approaching potential mates as an aid in sex discrimination, but others did not signal and mounted both males and females. When presented with dead gerrid models, males of L. notabilis discriminated between sexes while those of L. dissortis mounted both male and female conspecifics. Collectively, males employing TS tactics fertilized more eggs than patrolling males and TS males of L. notabilis fertilized relatively more eggs than those of L. dissortis. Individual males switched frequently between territorial and patrolling behavior both under natural conditions and in field exclosures. TS males gave more signals per encounter than PS males suggesting that signaling varies with male dominance. Choice of tactic did not depend upon hunger level and was not associated with significant differences in body length in single-species populations. However, in a mixed population, the smaller males of L. dissortis were rarely territorial and signaled infrequently. 相似文献

Summary. The phorbol ester DHPB has been detected in 5th instars and adults of Pachycoris klugii which feed on Jatropha curcas, a producer of phorbol esters with mollusc-, insect-, and vertebrate toxicity. DHPB from Pachycoris activates protein kinase C (PKC) which appears to be the main molecular target for phorbol esters. Phorbol esters of J. curcas exhibit a wide range of acute toxic effects in vertebrates and insects. It is therefore likely that the sequestration of
DHPB, which would explain the aposematic colouration of the bugs, confers chemical protection to P. klugii against vertebrate predators.

Choice of a site for oviposition can have fitness consequences. We investigated the consequences of female oviposition decisions
for offspring survival using the bitterling, Rhodeus sericeus, a freshwater fish that spawns inside living unionid mussels. A field survey of nine bitterling populations in the Czech
Republic revealed a significantly lower rate of release of juvenile bitterling from Anodonta cygnea compared to three other mussel species. A field experiment demonstrated that female bitterling show highly significant preferences
for spawning in A. anatina, Unio pictorum, and U. tumidus. Within a species, female bitterling avoided mussels containing high numbers of bitterling embryos. Mortality rates of bitterling
embryos in mussels were strongly density dependent and the strength of density dependence varied significantly among mussel
species. Female preferences for mussels matched survival rates of embryos within mussels and females distributed their eggs
among mussels such that embryo mortalities conformed to the predictions of an ideal free distribution model. Thus, female
oviposition choice is adaptive and minimizes individual embryo mortality.

Summary. Research on insect migration has justifiably emphasized females – the so-called “oogenesis-flight syndrome”– since it is
the females that place the eggs into new habitats. The large and small milkweed bugs, Oncopeltus fasciatus and Lygaeus kalmii, respectively, have featured prominently in studies of insect migration and sequestration of host plant toxins for chemical
defense. Here we report that males of these species, and males of another well-studied lygaeine (Neacoryphus bicrucis), produce pheromones in glands usually considered to serve only a defensive role in Heteroptera (the metathoracic scent glands),
and that these pheromones are exploited by a tachinid parasitoid as a host-finding kairomone. The pheromones are mixtures
of C6 and C8 saturated and unsaturated esters reminiscent of lepidopteran pheromones, and the key compound of the O. fasciatus pheromone has now been correctly identified as (E)-2,7-octadienyl acetate. It is proposed that the concept of the oogenesis-flight syndrome for these kinds of insects should
accommodate the role of males in the migration process. The hypothesis is presented that male-produced pheromones play a significant
role in guiding colonization of new habitats in many heteropteran species. In addition, data are presented suggesting that
there is a trade-off between the amount of pheromone produced by colonizing males and the host breadth of the species.

In soft sediment marine communities, fishes frequently bite off extended siphons of buried clams; the consequential shortening
of the siphon is known to reduce burial depth of the clams, secondarily increasing their vulnerability to lethal excavating
predators. In this study, siphon nipping on the yellow clam, Mesodesma mactroides, was simulated by removing the top 6.6–30% of siphons. This caused a burrow reduction in 25–75%, respectively, compared to
control individuals with intact siphons, in field and laboratory trials. To examine subsequent consequences of reduced burial
depth, we exposed nipped and intact clams to potential predators in the laboratory simulating the observed natural clam abundance.
Artificially nipped clams were consumed twice as much as control clams. The present results suggest that sympatric croppers
contribute to the stock recovery failure by facilitation of lethal predation and that re-seeding to increase the local abundance
of M. mactroides should be an essential aspect of conservation efforts in South America. 相似文献

Ontogenetic change of habitat depths of Nautilus pompilius in the Philippines (Tañon Strait) and Fiji is considered by comparing 18O/16O ratios in septa and cameral fluid of live-caught specimens and ambient sea-water. 18O values of cameral liquid become heavier with decreasing volume within a chamber, which may be due to isotopic fractionation during discharge across the siphuncular wall. All of the seven Philippine and Fiji specimens analyzed show a distinct change in 18O from light values in the first seven septa to heavier values in the succeeding septa. Two different isotopic temperature scales are obtained for the Fiji and Philippine populations, suggesting a differential vital effect of metabolism between them. Sightly light 18O values in Septa 1 to 7 and hatching at relatively high temperatures in aquaria both suggest that N. pompilius hatch at the shallowest depths within their inhabitable vertical range. Depths of postembryonic animals in the Philippines and Fiji waters estimated from the isotopic temperature-depth diagrams range from 120 to 160 m and from 440 to 520 m, respectively, both of which correlate well with capture records. More than several tens of small-scale 18O cycles are detected in the sequence of nacreous layers within the single septum of a submature Philippine specimen. Predation of different-sized Hyperoche medusarum (Hyperiida: Amphipoda) on larvae of the Pacific herring Clupea harengus pallasi was studied in the laboratory. The attacking rate of H. medusarum was a function of herring larvae size as well as size of the predator, and varied from 0.15 to 0.95 larvae attacked h-1 per hyperiid. In the range of 7.55 to 16.05 mm total larval length, vulnerability to predation was highest for 13.3 and 13.7 mm larvae. Large hyperiids swam faster and covered a wider area during searching and were more effective predators than small ones. Males of most bushcricket species produce acoustic advertisement signals to attract females for mating. These signals can
also increase conspicuousness to predators. In the genus Poecilimon (Orthoptera: Phaneropterinae) males are attacked by the parasitoid fly Therobia leonidei (Diptera: Tachinidae: Ormiini) which locates males by their calls. In Greece T.leonidei parasitizes several Poecilimon species with different song structures: we examined whether host choice is related to song structure by comparing parasitism
rates in two closely related Poecilimon species. One of these species produces monosyllabic songs, the songs of the other species being polysyllabic. The tachinid
fly parasitized the polysyllabic species to a greater extent. We demonstrate in a field-experiment that this preference for
the polysyllabic species does not depend on local adaptations of the fly. The most probable explanation for the preference
of the fly for the polysyllabic singing species seems to be better detection of longer songs. This result is discussed in
the context of male song evolution.

Mean predation rates (± SD) on egg cases of the skates Bathyraja macloviana, B. albomaculata, Amblyraja doellojuradoi, and Psammobatis spp. from the southwestern Atlantic were estimated to be 0.151 (±0.230), 0.423 (±0.344), 0.254 (±0.390), and 0.150 (±0.288), respectively. These estimates are within the ranges reported earlier (14–40%). Egg cases of B. albomaculata were preyed on in higher proportion than expected from their abundance and suffered a heavier predation rate where the snail Trophon acanthodes was present. Predation rates were not correlated with the thickness of the egg case wall, which indicates that other factors (ecological or chemical) could explain this pattern. Five types of boreholes were found in the egg cases: one was attributable to muricid gastropods, one to naticid gastropods, and a third type to an unknown gastropod (probably Fusitriton magellanicus); the remaining were of unknown origin. Cladistic analyses showed that skates are secondarily oviparous and have maximized adaptations for living in deep water. We suggest that oviparity in skates appeared as an adaptation to maximize fecundity (40–160 eggs per year, as compared to 2–18 pups annually or biannually in viviparous guitarfishes, the plesiomorphic sister clade of skates). If a predation rate of 24% (the mean of predation rates of all skate species studied to date) is applied to the range of fecundities reported for skates, the result is that 18–114 viable pups are produced annually per female skate. Even with a high mortality rate of 64% (the only direct estimate of natural mortality for any elasmobranch), each female skate produces 17–54 eggs annually. These values are higher than most elasmobranch fecundities. This maximization of fecundity is possible mainly because the fecundity of oviparous species is not limited by body size, as in viviparity. Loss of seeds to consumers is common in plant communities, but the degree to which these losses influence plant abundance or population growth is often unclear. This is particularly the case for postdispersal seed predation by rodents, as most studies of rodent seed predation have focused on the sources of spatiotemporal variation in seed loss but not quantified the population consequences of this loss. In previous work we showed that seed predation by deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) substantially reduced seedling recruitment and establishment of Lithospermum ruderale (Boraginaceae), a long-lived perennial forb. To shed light on how rodent seed predation and the near-term effects on plant recruitment might influence longer-term patterns of L. ruderale population growth, we combined experimental results with demographic data in stage-based population models. Model outputs revealed that rodent seed predation had a significant impact on L. ruderale population growth rate (lambda). With the removal of postdispersal seed predation, the projected population growth rates increased between 0.06 and 0.12, depending on site (mean deltalambda across sites = 0.08). Seed predation shifted the projected stable stage distribution of populations from one with a high proportion of young plants to one in which larger adult size classes dominate. Elasticities of vital rates also changed, with germination and growth of seedlings and young plants becoming more important with the removal of seed predation. Simulations varying the magnitude of seed predation pressure while holding other vital rates constant showed that seed predation could lower lambda even if only 40% of available seeds were consumed. Summary Copulation in Lygaeus equestris L. (Heteroptera, Lygaeidae) is known to last 0.5–24 h. Variations in copula duration of field-collected insects were studied in the laboratory, and different hypotheses concerning the significance of prolonged copulations were tested.Through reciprocal matings with normal and sterile (irradiated) males, sperm displacement was estimated at about 90%. A male could thus increase his fitness by preventing subsequent matings of an inseminated female.Copulations with virgin insects, observed over 15 h, were classified in two categories: short (0.5–8.0 h) and long (> 15 h) duration (Fig. 1). No difference in the number of fertilized eggs was found between long and short copulations, and the insemination rate was highest during the first hour of a couplation (Fig. 2). Long-lasting couplations did not give rise to increased sperm displacement (Table 2). These results indicate that there is no difference in the amount of sperm transferred during short and long copulations and that no insemination takes place during the latter part of a prolonged copulation.Longer lasting copulations occurred when the sex ratio was male-biased than when it was female-biased (Fig. 1). The frequency of prolonged copulations was higher when the female was gravid than when she contained no eggs (virgin) (Figs. 3 and 4). Support is thus given to the hypothesis that prolonged copulation is a male postinsemination strategy to prevent subsequent matings of a female.Females subjected to male competition over a longer period, laid fewer eggs and died earlier than females that were mated but subsequently isolated from males (Fig. 5). Egg batches from females living with males were larger than batches from mated, isolated females (Table 3). This is probably due to a combination of many matings with short intermissions and prolonged copulations, both of which postpone oviposition.Comparisons between copulations of males with either gravid or virgin females during these experiments, led to the conclusion that short copulations with virgin females result from a male decision to terminate copulation after insemination is completed, whereas copula duration with gravid females is more likely to depend on a combination of male and female behavior. 相似文献

Summary During their first 1–2 years of life, juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) are stream-dwelling, and feed upon drifting invertebrates. They move upstream from a holding position to intercept individual prey items; the distance moved (attack distance) is an increasing, but decelerating, function of prey size. Since the fish are presumably more visible to predators during such feeding excursions, prey size and risk are associated variables.The effect on attack distance of the presentation of a model predator (a photograph of a rainbow trout) was examined in the laboratory. Attack distances are shortened following presentation of a predator; this is particularly true when the prey are large (Fig. 1). The extent of the reduction of attack distance is directly related to predator presentation frequency, although there appears to be a minimum level to which it will decline (Fig. 2). Hungry fish and fish in the presence of a competitor (simulated by a mirror) are less responsive to the predator, suggesting a trade-off of energetic requirements and risk (Fig. 3 and Table 3). The effect of predation risk should be to reduce the relative proportion of large prey in a juvenile coho's diet, and its net rate of energy intake. 相似文献
