Sensitivity experiments were performed using a large-eddy simulation (LES) turbulence model of the ocean surface boundary layer. Parameters defining wind and wave forcing were varied to help understand how different forcing affects the formation and dispersive qualities of Langmuir circulation (LC). Comparison of the model with observed surface velocity variance shows a consistent linear increase in velocity scale with increasing wave Stokes drift, however, the model systematically under predicts the velocity scale for large Stokes drift. Results using particle trajectories show that in open-ocean conditions, wave forcing dominates the structure of near surface turbulence causing organized LC cells that actively collect surface material. With weak waves, surface particles display a more random pattern in comparison to strong wave cases. Analysis of the turbulence kinetic energy budget shows that the reduction in wave forcing is offset by shear production, which produces less organized patterns in surface material in comparison to LC.  相似文献

Aspects of Langmuir circulation (Lc) which relate to the dispersion of floating material are reviewed. These include convergence, dispersion by advection (particularly of a plume of floating oil when wind and current are in different directions) and the spread and dispersion by cell instability or breakdown first described by Csanady. There are, however, processes which compete with Lc to diffuse floating material. In shallow tidally mixed seas, where the environmental impact of an oil spill may be greatest, cross-wind dispersion caused by Lc will dominate over that produced by bottom turbulence if the ratio of the wind speed, W, to current, U, is sufficiently large. Observations and rough estimates suggest a transition near W/U=15. A simple model is devised to estimate cross-wind dispersion in shallow unstratified waters when turbulence generated at a flat seabed dominates that produced by Lc, but when the effects of Lc are still evident in aligning filaments of oil, as may commonly be the case in moderate winds in coastal or continental shelf waters.  相似文献

Although the presence of Langmuir circulation (LC) cells is evident from observations in lakes, ponds, and coastal waters, the effects of these cells on oil slicks have received less attention. This paper considers the effects as inferred from field data of LC cells on oil slicks. Examples from observed experimental oil slicks in the field are presented. The importance of these LC cells is discussed from the point of view of oil spill contingency.  相似文献

In the present study the horizontal distribution of columnar aerosol optical thicknessderived at high spatial resolution from Earth observation satellite data in the Lombardy area (Italy) was converted to the horizontal distribution of optically effective aerosols concentration at the ground level. This was achieved by incorporating information on atmosphere's mixing height, at which pollutants released at ground level are vertically dispersed by convection or mechanical turbulence. The resulted fields compared favourably to pollutant concentration measurements provided by the ground stations. These results show that it is possible to calculate mean concentration fields by using the spatial distribution of aerosol optical thickness (AOT) measured by satellite normalized by the atmospheric mixing height. The advantage of satellites in measuring AOT is that they can capture all actual emissions compared to the models, which are based on inventoried data.  相似文献

Most standard oil spill modeling programs neglect the effects of Langmuir circulation (LC). The authors have identified three areas where LC effects may be important in spill behavior. These three areas are spreading, dispersion, and transport. LC will cause the slick to break into windrows when the wind-row formation velocity is comparable to Fay and other spreading forces. Oil dispersion is likely to be enhanced, with droplets carried to greater depth and distributed non-uniformly. Transport velocities for different parts of the slick will vary because of LC, a phenomenon that also occurs because of other factors.  相似文献

Current models of oil spills include no vertical physics. They neglect the effect of vertical water motions on the transport and concentration of floating oil. Some simple ways to introduce vertical physics are suggested here. The major suggestion is to routinely measure the density stratification of the upper ocean during oil spills in order to develop a database on the effect of stratification.  相似文献

Injection molded nanocomposites have been successfully fabricated from cellulose acetate (CA), eco-friendly triethyl citrate (TEC) plasticizer, and organically modified clay with and without maleic anhydride grafted cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB-g-MA) as a compatibilizer. The effects of processing conditions such as mixing methods, pre-plasticizing times, extruder retention times (RT) and addition of compatibilizer on the performance of these nanocomposites have been evaluated. The cellulosic plastic with CA/TEC (80/20 wt%) was used as the polymer matrix for nanocomposite fabrication. The morphologies of these nanocomposites were evaluated through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were measured and have been correlated with the XRD and TEM observations. From all of the sequential mixing methods used, powder–powder mixing leads to the most transparent nanocomposites. Cellulosic plastic-based nanocomposites obtained using increased pre-plasticizing times and RT showed better exfoliated structures. In the system containing compatibilizer, the minimum retention time required for obtaining almost completely exfoliated hybrid nanocomposites was shorter than in the system without compatibilizer.  相似文献

Conventional direct melt mixing technology was investigated on zein and kafirin, two vegetable proteins extracted, respectively, from maize and sorghum. A lab scale internal mixer has been used to thoroughly study the thermo-plasticization process of the proteins with several plasticizers. Different compositions were investigated under different processing conditions. In particular, the lengthy procedures of forming the protein/solvent/plasticizer solution followed by drying or the protein/plasticizer emulsion followed by the precipitation of the extrudable resin, reported in the literature for these systems, were avoided and the protein and plasticizer were directly fed into the mixer to obtain a plastic-like material. The effect of plasticizer type and content and mixing process variables on the mechanical properties was analyzed. Compression molded slabs were transparent, strong and flexible, with properties similar to the cast films reported in the literature, prepared with the same type of plasticizers. However, lower plasticizer content was sufficient to produce equally flexible films, proving an enhanced plasticization efficiency of the mixing process, as compared to casting.  相似文献

In order to understand the fate of anthropogenic lead (Pb)pollution in boreal forest soils, and to predict future trends, it is important to know where in the soil the pollution Pb is accumulated and how large the pollution and natural Pb inventories are in different soil horizons. We combined stable Pb isotope (206Pb/207Pb ratios) and concentration analyses to study Pb in podzol profiles and mor samples from old-growth forest stands at seven sites distributed from southern to northern Sweden. Additional samples were taken from managed forests, and from an agricultural field, to give some idea of the effects of land-use. Pb concentrations are typically 60–100 g g-1 dry mass in the mor layer in southern Sweden and about 30 g g-1 in northern Sweden. Pb isotope analyses show that virtually all of this Pb is pollution Pb. The isotope composition also shows that pollution Pb has penetrated downwards between 20–60 cm in the forest soils. The total pollution Pb inventories vary between 0.7–3.0 g m-2 ground surface, with larger inventories in southern compared to northern Sweden. Although the highest Pb concentrations occur in the mor layer, the largest inventories of pollution Pb are found in the Bs-horizon. The limited investigation of Pb distribution and inventories in soils from managed forests did not point to any major difference compared to the old-growth forests. The agricultural field revealed, however, a completely deviating Pb profile with all pollution Pb evenly distributed in the 20 cm thick top-soil.  相似文献

Nitrogen removal in wetlands is achieved through two pathways: (a) N cycling and (b) storage. N cycling is a permanent removal pathway. There has been an increasing interest in the development of technologies to alleviate permanent nitrogen removal limitation in constructed wetlands by ensuring prevalence of conditions enhancing N cycling. The purpose of this study is to review an emerging technology of vegetated submerged bed constructed wetland system aimed at improving nitrogen removal in wetlands through rational system design. The design and performance of this system type is evaluated. The oxygen transfer capacity and nitrogen removal mechanisms on system performance are evaluated. Constructed wetland combinations most commonly consist of vertical flow (VF) and horizontal flow (HF) beds where VF and HF are aimed at nitrification and denitrification, respectively. Nitrate nitrogen accumulation is the most limiting factor in typical VF based systems.  相似文献

The potential effectiveness of a new composite-aggregate capping technology, AquaBlokTM—in physically isolating contaminated, fine-grained sediments derived from an Ohio, Lake Erie tributary—was evaluated in the laboratory. In particular, large-scale settling-column studies were conducted to determine the degree to which composite-aggregate material penetrates into and/or mixes with the sediment, perhaps affecting the degree to which sediment could be physically isolated through capping. Additionally, large-scale flume studies were conducted to determine resistance of the composite-aggregate material to significant and long-term, fluvial-like erosive forces; the resistance of other potential capping materials was also evaluated for comparison. Experimental results indicate that the composite-aggregate material effectively isolates sediment through the formation of a continuous and relatively erosion-resistant, hydrated capping layer atop the sediments.  相似文献

分别采用生物絮凝法和化学絮凝法处理300 mL COD为20 000 mg/L、SS为4 000 mg/L的洗毛废水,最佳生物絮凝条件:生物絮凝剂加入量为5 mL,反应温度为30℃,先以120 r/min搅拌5 min、再以60 r/min搅拌35 min,洗毛废水pH为9.0.COD去除率达92%.最佳化学絮凝条件:化学絮凝剂加入量为30 mL,反应温度为40℃,先以120 r/min搅拌5 min、再以60 r/min搅拌25 min,洗毛废水pH为5.0.COD去除率达93%.生物絮凝剂和化学絮凝剂对洗毛废水的絮凝效果接近,但生物絮凝剂的加入量比化学絮凝剂少很多.  相似文献

This is a futuristic appreciation of waste management challenges and their solution by means of good management models. A literature review, administrative initiatives, research results, and experiences from practice are combined in this study to render an evolutionary picture of the change in paradigm relative to municipal solid waste possible to occur between 2000 and 2025. The principal stages of progress in the 25 years studied were: the correct characterization of municipal solid waste as a function of geographical location and recycling potential, the divided collection model and its corresponding learning curve, correct opportunity cost accounting tools, and the generally admitted and accepted changeover of municipal solid waste treatment from a technical to a management problem. It is reported that as a result of this progress, the municipal landfill is a species in extinction. Regional landfills with long life spans are the rule in 2025.  相似文献

Aspergillus foetidus has the ability to take up chromium during the stationary phase of growth and under growth-nonsupportive conditions. We observed a 97% decrease in hexavalent chromium (initial concentration 5 µg/g) at the end of 92 h of growth, which may be due to its reduction to Cr (III) and/or complexation with organic compounds released due to the metabolic activity of the fungus. Replacement culture studies under growth-nonsupportive conditions revealed that the maximum uptake of Cr (VI) at pH 7.0 is 2 mg/g of dry biomass. At low or high pH values, Cr (VI) uptake is significantly reduced. In addition, the initial rate of total chromium uptake is also enhanced by higher biomass concentrations and the presence of glucose. The results obtained through this investigation indicate the possibility of treating waste effluents containing hexavalent chromium using Aspergillus foetidus.  相似文献

A novel sodium alginate-grafted poly(acrylic acid)/graphene oxide (NaAlg-g-PAA/GO) composite hydrogel was prepared via ultraviolet irradiation, and characterized by infrared spectroscopy spectrometer. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It was employed to adsorb NH4+ from aqueous solution and used as slow-release nitrogen fertilizers (SNFs). Result indicated that the adsorption process for NH4+ reached equilibrium within 50 min, with the adsorption capacity of 6.6 mmol g?1 even if 30 wt% GO was incorporated. The results of adsorption kinetic and isotherm were well described by the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich model. The thermodynamics analysis showed the adsorption process was spontaneous. The study indicated excellent water-holding ratio of soil with 2 wt% SNFs was 81.2%, and nitrogen release was up to 55.1% within 40 days in soil. Overall, NaAlg-g-PAA/GO could be considered as an efficient adsorbent for the recovery of nitrogen with the agronomic reuse as a fertilizer.  相似文献

Polylactic acid (PLA) waste has various treatment methods, such as natural decomposition, composting, incineration, and hydrolysis. Degradation of PLA waste by gamma ray and pulsed light irradiation is an efficient, safe and innovative method that also protects the environment. The focus of this study was on the development of an alternative, green technology for solving the PLA waste disposal problem of PLA, rather than using incineration or the landfill method. We used a novel approach to identify the thermal decomposition and heat properties of crystalline poly lactic acid, non-crystalline polylactic acid, and blend polylactic acid. The approach involved the degradation of the materials with gamma ray and pulsed light irradiation followed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). We also developed a novel approach to the heat effect, including heat reactivity properties by TGA tests and thermal mass loss simulation for proper application, processing, and waste treatment conditions. The data from this study can be used to improve the design of operation and waste treatment protocols for PLA, which will benefit the environment.  相似文献

This study investigated the electrochemical oxidation of stabilized leachate from Pulau Burung semi-aerobic sanitary landfill by conducting laboratory experiments with sodium sulfate Na2SO4 (as electrolyte) and graphite carbon electrodes. The control parameters were influent COD, current density and reaction time, while the responses were BOD removal, COD removal, BOD:COD ratio, color and pH. Na2SO4 concentration was 1 g/L. Experiments were conducted based on a three-level factorial design and response surface methodology (RSM) was used to analyze the results. The optimum conditions were obtained as 1414 mg/L influent COD concentration, 79.9 mA/cm2 current density and 4 h reaction time. This resulted in 70% BOD removal, 68% COD removal, 84% color removal, 0.04 BOD/COD ratio and 9.1 pH. Electrochemical treatment using graphite carbon electrode was found to be effective in BOD, COD and color removal but was not effective in increasing the BOD/COD ratio or enhancing biodegradability of the leachate. The color intensity of the treated samples increased at low influent COD and high current density due to corrosion of electrode material.  相似文献
