Perkin-Elmer tubes packed with Tenax TA have been tested for the monitoring of low concentrations of aromatic compounds and linear alkanes using diffusive sampling. The uptake rates have been investigated for different exposure doses. A particular hexane and benzene behaviour has been observed: their uptake rates decrease rapidly in the lower exposure doses and so follow an exponential curve. The uptake rates of heavier compounds adopt another tendency: a slow decrease with time following a linear profile. The relative humidity influence has been studied too, and no water perturbation has been recorded.  相似文献

Equations for predicting the minimum efficiency and most penetrating particle size for fibrous filters have been derived by considering the diffusion and interception mechanisms. The results show that the most penetrating particle size decreases with increasing filtration velocity and with increasing fiber volume fraction, and increases with increasing filter fiber size. The corresponding equation for minimum efficiency has also been derived showing the dependence on filtration velocity, fiber volume fraction, and fiber size. These results have been compared with experimental data and satisfactory agreement has been obtained.  相似文献

Assuming that settling takes place in two zones (a constant rate zone and a variable rate zone), a model using four parameters accounting for the nature of the water-suspension system has been proposed for describing batch sedimentation processes. The sludge volume index (SVI) has been expressed in terms of these parameters. Some disadvantages of the SVI application as a design parameter have been pointed out, and it has been shown that a relationship between zone settling velocity and sludge concentration is more consistent for describing the settling behavior and for design of settling tanks. The permissible overflow rate has been related to the technological parameters of secondary settling tank by simple working equations. The graphical representations of these equations could be used to optimize the design and operation of secondary settling tanks.  相似文献

In the present study, more realistic and easily adaptable input parameters have been used with a view to investigating the long-range air quality analysis for the dispersion of air pollutants emitted from an area source with a multiple box model. The model formulation has been discussed at length for the ground level sources when convective conditions prevail. The routine meteorological observations have been used for the computation of sensible surface heat flux, friction velocity and mixing depth. A radiation model provides the estimates of the sensible surface heat flux. Based on the similarity theory, an iterative procedure has been adopted for the estimation of friction velocity which provides a coupling of radiation computation and the surface layer of the planetary boundary layer through surface heat flux expression. The important parameters—wind speed and eddy diffusivity profiles—have been derived and have been used to obtain the concentration patterns as hourly averages. The procedure could be easily adopted where observed meteorological parameters may be used for studying the dispersal of pollutants from the ground level sources.  相似文献

Evidence for photochemically induced interactions in Ekofisk crude oil as a thin film on top of a water surface has been obtained by isotopic labelling experiments and field desorbtion mass spectrometry. The interaction behaviour to the high molecular weight resin/asphaltene material has been discussed by invoking the concept of molecular assemblies like micelles and vesicles. This latter chromophoric material has also been shown to have an appreciable sensitizing effect, resulting in a substantial transformation of carbon 14 radiolabelled species, including straight chain n-alkanes.Isotopic studies do not provide evidence for interactions in Ekofisk crude oil constituents kept in darkness, where only a very slow transformation/degradation of oil components has been observed.The implication of these findings has been discussed.  相似文献

Urban aerosol characterization gathering ground-based in situ and sunphotometer measurements have been performed for the city of Thessaloniki for two specific days: the 12th and 13th of June 1997. A representative aerosol model for Thessaloniki aerosols was tentatively constructed for each day. Four components have been selected from our chemical measurements: black carbon (BC), particulate organic matter (POM), inorganic fine water soluble particles (WS) and a residue coarse component which mainly contains coarse dust and sea-salt particles (CC). Size distribution and complex refractive index for (WS) and (CC) components were determined from published data. (CC) has been shown to have a small optical effect compared to the submicron components. Size distribution for carbonaceous particles was obtained from sensitivity tests on particulate number and visible Angström exponent. The impact of relative humidity on extinction and scattering coefficients has been calculated on 13 June with Mie theory and Hänel relationships. Parameters needed for this calculation were well known for WS particles only. For POM particles we have used the experimental curve of hygroscopic factors obtained by Hobbs et al. (1997) for urban aerosols sampled on the East coast of United States to determine the hydrophilic dependency of POM particles. Relative humidity has been shown to be an important parameter even for values lower than 50%. Optical apportionment calculation has been realized pointing out that more than 45% of the total extinction coefficient is due to (POM) particles and about 20 and 30% to (WS) and (BC), respectively.  相似文献

Phenol degradation by Photo-Fenton reaction has been studied in highly concentrated wastewaters and most intermediate species have been identified by Fourier Transform IR-Spectroscopy with ATR device. During the photodegradation of highly concentrated phenol solutions, the formation of dissolved and precipitate tannin has been observed. The possibility of a Fe3+-Pyrogallol complex formation, previous to the tannin formation, has been proposed too. The complex formation involving Fe3+ ions could be related to the observed Photo-Fenton activity decrease. Tannin formation inhibits the complete mineralization of phenol because *OH radicals attack will produce further condensation steps and the polymer size increase. This fact limits the applicability of the process for highly concentrated phenolic wastes mineralization. However, the tannin precipitation allows its separation from the solution by conventional filtration, and reduction of the corresponding dissolved organic carbon. These observations have been proved from the identification of primary degradation products, catechol and hydroquinone. Catechol is considered to be the first step for the formation of tannins. Degradation process for phenol, catechol and hydroquinone have been monitored by total organic carbon (TOC) measurements along the reaction time span. From these results, a global mechanism for the Photo-Fenton degradation of phenol is proposed.  相似文献

For over four years, a Texas air pollution control regulation has been in force which permits use of a stack mounted transmissometer instrument to measure visible emissions, thus avoiding the necessity for visual observations. Many types of industrial plants have installed instruments, and extensive experience has been obtained with this method of measurement and control. Plant operators and enforcement officials have expressed a strong preference for this method, both to demonstrate compliance and to provide data to aid in operating control equipment. Some operational problems have been encountered, but these usually can be overcome with proper care. Because of the advantages obtained with this regulation a new regulation has been adopted which makes the instrumental method mandatory for large sources of visible emissions.  相似文献

A database for chlorinated dioxins (DBDs), with heats of formation derived by analogy with chlorination of quinone and benzene, has already been shown to predict relative isomer distributions nearer to those observed, and those predicted using MOPAC, than an earlier database due to Shaub. The model has been extended to obtain a similar database for chlorinated dibenzofurans (DBF's), and comparisons with observed isomer concentration distributions are illustrated. Calculations are carried out using the NPL MTDATA suite of programs. Isomer group values for the properties of the original compounds and each degree of chlorination have been derived, and the use of these values leads to a reduction in the data obtained in computations to more manageable proportions. The reduced database obtained is combined with other databases to carry out computer predictions for simulated chlorine-containing combustion gases. Data for inorganics substances and the simplest organic substances (methane. ethane and related species) are obtained from the SGTE database. More extensive data for aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons from various standard sources have been incorporated in an additional computational database. In order to examine the relative concentrations of DBFs and DBDs a database for chlorinated hydrocarbons has been established. Predictions for simulated fuel rich combustion products for the C, H, O, Cl system are presented.  相似文献

A simple and rapid protocol has been developed for monitoring of the phenol degrading population in the environmental samples. PCR protocol uses the total DNA prepared from the samples as a template in the amplification reaction. Primers have been designed from the sequence data for Dmp and Phe operon encoding multi-component and single component phenol oxidizing system, respectively. The phenol degrading genotype in various samples have been demonstrated using the developed PCR protocol.  相似文献

The aqueous solubility of hexafluorobenzene has been determined, at 298.15 K, using a shake-flask method with a spectrophotometric quantification technique. Furthermore, the solubility of hexafluorobenzene in saline aqueous solutions, at distinct salt concentrations, has been measured. Both salting-in and salting-out effects were observed and found to be dependent on the nature of the cationic/anionic composition of the salt. COSMO-RS, the Conductor-like Screening Model for Real Solvents, has been used to predict the corresponding aqueous solubilities at conditions similar to those used experimentally. The prediction results showed that the COSMO-RS approach is suitable for the prediction of salting-in/-out effects. The salting-in/-out phenomena have been rationalized with the support of COSMO-RS σ-profiles. The prediction potential of COSMO-RS regarding aqueous solubilities and octanol-water partition coefficients has been compared with typically used QSPR-based methods. Up to now, the absence of accurate solubility data for hexafluorobenzene hampered the calculation of the respective partition coefficients. Combining available accurate vapor pressure data with the experimentally determined water solubility, a novel air-water partition coefficient has been derived.  相似文献

Trends toward an increase of adverse health effects on reproductive organs have been reviewed. An urgent need has been recognised to establish validated in vivo and in vitro screening assays to test for hormonal activities of chemicals. Relevant existing OECD guidelines have been reviewed and enhancements of some of these have been identified, mainly to test for estrogenic and androgenic activity of chemicals. The problems connected to monitoring activities are outlined, particularly for ambient and biological monitoring. Indeed, the problem of assessing human exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals through environmental chemical analysis tends to a very high level of complexity. This has been illustrated through the example of one single subclass of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), the organohalogen compounds. Valid biological markers are also needed to be effectively used in epidemiological studies and risk assessment. A multidisciplinary approach and the collaboration among experts in the field of clinical biochemistry, toxicology, and epidemiology is required.  相似文献

Rapid, inexpensive, sensitive, and selective enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) now are utilized in environmental science. In this laboratory, many ELISAs have been developed for pesticides and other toxic substances and also for their metabolites. Compounds for which ELISAs have recently been devised include insecticides (organophosphates, carbaryl, pyrethroids, and fenoxycarb), herbicides (s‐triazines, arylureas, triclopyr, and bromacil), fungicides (myclobutanil), TCDD, and metabolites of naphthalene and toluene. A large number of filter materials, organic and inorganic, for removal of heavy metals in mine drainage have been reviewed. Bark, chitin, chitosan, commercial ion exchangers, dairy manure compost, lignite, peat, rice husks, vegetal compost, and yeast are examples of organic materials, while bio-carbons, calcareous shale, dolomite, fly ash, limestone, olivine, steel slag materials and zeolites are examples of inorganic materials. The majority of these filter materials have been investigated in laboratory studies, based on various experimental set-ups (batch and/or column tests) and different conditions. A few materials, for instance steel slag materials, have also been subjects to field investigations under real-life conditions. The results from these investigations show that steel slag materials have the potential to remove heavy metals under different conditions. Ion exchange has been suggested as the major metal removal mechanisms not only for steel slag but also for lignite. Other suggested removal mechanisms have also been identified. Adsorption has been suggested important for activated carbon, precipitation for chitosan and sulphate reduction for olivine. General findings indicate that the results with regard to metal removal vary due to experimental set ups, composition of mine drainage and properties of filter materials and the discrepancies between studies renders normalisation of data difficult. However, the literature reveals that Fe, Zn, Pb, Hg and Al are removed to a large extent. Further investigations, especially under real-life conditions, are however necessary in order to find suitable filter materials for treatment of mine drainage.  相似文献

The single photon counting technique has been used to measure the decay time for several Kuwaiti crude and refined oils. Fluorescent characteristics of two different bunker oils from widely separate geographic areas have been studied. Laser induced fluorescent data for the crude oil samples are compared with the decay time results to evaluate the potential of these techniques for the identification of oil sticks in the marine environment. Response of the oil film thickness to various excitation wavelengths from a CW Ar ion laser and a pulsed xenon lamp has been investigated.  相似文献

A historical record of monthly chemical makeups for a North American pulp mill has been analyzed by time series methods. The analysis yields estimates for the reduction in sulfur makeup resulting from each of three separate pollution abatement moves: black liquor oxidation, blow heat recovery, and cooking liquor sulfidity reduction. Further analysis yields estimates of sulfurous emissions and of the substantially lower emissions which could have been achieved if sulfidity management had been incorporated in the program.  相似文献

Data for eight reservoirs in the South Pennines covering the period 1980-98, and for 1988-98 at the River Etherow Acid Waters Monitoring Network site, have been analysed for temporal trends using the Seasonal Kendall test. Rising trends in pH were identified at seven of the eight reservoirs, generally accompanied by declining aluminium levels. Nitrate concentrations have, however, increased sharply at the two reservoirs for which adequate data were available. Data for a wider range of determinands at the Etherow suggest that pH increases in the region can be attributed to declining sulphate concentrations, as a result of reductions in sulphur deposition. Nitrate concentrations have again increased at this site. Results are significant in a national context in that pH recovery, although widely believed to have taken place in the UK since the 1970s, has rarely been shown to have occurred. For the South Pennine region, which has been severely acidified by historically high acid deposition levels, there have clearly been improvements over the last 18 years, although many surface waters remain acidic. Observed trends for nitrate suggest that some of the pH recovery resulting from reduced sulphur deposition may have been offset by nitrogen saturation in the region, due in part to continued high levels of nitrogen deposition.  相似文献
