Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) was used to monitor the movement of a fluorinated hydrocarbon dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) through a saturated porous medium within a laboratory column. Impedance measurements were made using a horizontal plane of 12 electrodes positioned at regular intervals around the centre of the column. A 2D inversion algorithm, which incorporated the cylindrical geometry of the column, was used to reconstruct resistivity and phase images from the measured data. Differential time-lapse images of DNAPL movement past the plane of electrodes were generated by the cell-by-cell subtraction of resistivity and phase baseline models from those associated with the DNAPL release stage of the experiment.The DNAPL pulse was clearly delineated as resistive anomalies in the differential time-lapse resistivity images. The spatial extent of the resistive anomalies indicated that in addition to vertical migration, some lateral spreading of the DNAPL had occurred. Residual contamination could be detected after quasi-static conditions were reestablished. Residual DNAPL saturation was estimated from the resistivity model data by applying Archie's second equation.Despite significant measured phase changes due to DNAPL contamination, the differential phase images revealed only weak anomalies associated with DNAPL flow; these anomalies could be seen only in the initial stages of the experiment during peak flow through the plane of electrodes.  相似文献

The long-term operational stability (159 d) in removal of organics and ammonia from synthetic wastewater was investigated. The experiment was carried out in two identical plug flow membrane bioreactors (MBR) (each with a submerged A4 Kubota membrane) operated under aerobic conditions. The vacuum distillate of a crude oil fraction in the emulsified state, which was used to model the petroleum pollutants, was added into the feed medium. The performance of biological treatment was evaluated by physicochemical analyses such as nitrogen forms, COD, and BOD. Additionally, monitoring of PAHs in the wastewaters was performed using HPLC-diode array detector. Moreover, the community structure of bacteria was analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. The MBR treatment was very effective with reduction by more than 90% of COD and Total Organic Carbon. Nearly complete removal of petroleum originated non-polar micropollutants was observed. The influence of the highest dosage of petroleum pollutants (1000 μLL(-1)) on the bacterial community was noted.  相似文献

This study is considered the first attempt to apply a mobile monitoring system to estimating silt loading on paved roads in a megacity such as the Seoul metropolitan area. Using a mobile monitoring system developed in 2005, we estimated silt loadings on representative paved roads in the Seoul metropolitan area, including the city of Incheon, over a period of 3 yr. The temporal and spatial characteristics of silt loading were investigated for the carefully selected roads that may reflect the characteristics of the cities of Seoul and Incheon. In this study, changes in the average silt loading values were investigated in terms of land use, the temporal resolution of data acquisition (i.e., seasonal, daily, three-hour scale), the road width or number of lanes, and rainfall, which may affect the characteristics of the average silt loading significantly. It was found that the advantages of using the mobile monitoring system are its ability to obtain a large quantity of silt loading data in a short period of time and over a wide area and its ability to create a silt loading map showing the relative magnitude of silt loading in relation to a specific location, which makes it possible to easily locate hot spots.  相似文献

A dynamic model of forest ecosystems was used to investigate the effects of climate change, atmospheric deposition and harvest intensity on 48 forest sites in Sweden (n = 16) and Switzerland (n = 32). The model was used to investigate the feasibility of deriving critical loads for nitrogen (N) deposition based on changes in plant community composition. The simulations show that climate and atmospheric deposition have comparably important effects on N mobilization in the soil, as climate triggers the release of organically bound nitrogen stored in the soil during the elevated deposition period. Climate has the most important effect on plant community composition, underlining the fact that this cannot be ignored in future simulations of vegetation dynamics. Harvest intensity has comparatively little effect on the plant community in the long term, while it may be detrimental in the short term following cutting. This study shows: that critical loads of N deposition can be estimated using the plant community as an indicator; that future climatic changes must be taken into account; and that the definition of the reference deposition is critical for the outcome of this estimate.  相似文献

Toluene and formaldehyde are malodorous and cause indoor pollution. These materials have received much attention as hazardous and malodorous substances. It is well known that long-term exposure to even fairly low levels of toluene and formaldehyde brings about the risk of asthma and eczema. In this study, a composite TiO2-zeolite (ZE) sheet prepared using a papermaking technique was applied to remove toluene and formaldehyde under UV irradiation. The optimum composition of the TiO2 (Ti)-ZE sheet was studied in detail with regard to the effective removal of various indoor pollutants. Gaseous toluene and formaldehyde were removed by a composite TiO2-ZE sheet with different efficiencies depending upon the ratio of Ti/ZE in the composite sheet. The composite sheets could decompose formaldehyde and toluene repeatedly after being recharged. It was shown that the sheets are potentially applicable as highly functional materials to be placed on walls and ceilings of houses for the removal of various indoor pollutants.  相似文献

This work represents the first step to set up a toxicity testing procedure and to evaluate the sensitivity of the test microorganism to several classes of environmental pollutants. First, three different techniques were employed to standardise the microbial inoculum, then two different toxicity assessment protocols have been compared: Microtox and a dehydrogenase (DHase) activity inhibition test. The main goal was the optimisation of a microbial bioassay based on the dehydrogenase activity (DHase) inhibition in Pseudomonas fluorescens bacterial strain ATCC 13525. Triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) was used as electron acceptor and its reduction produces Triphenyl formazane (TPF). The P. fluorescens DHase inhibition bioassay was investigated for being a reliable and rapid method for assessing toxicity. The optimisation of the operating conditions resulted in a repeatable bioassay. Then, P. fluorescens and Vibrio fischeri sensitivity were firstly compared by testing Zn++, one of the reference compounds for Microtox test. In addition, other compounds (Ni++, Cd++, Cu++, phenol) were also tested with both bioassays. A high statistical significance of data was obtained with the logistic curve. The present work has demonstrated that P. fluorescens is as sensitive as Microtox culture (V. fischeri), for some of the metal ions. With reference to organic compounds, the lower sensitivity of P. fluorescens to phenol makes its use difficult in organic polluted samples.  相似文献

The known advantages of solid-phase microextraction as a simple, one-step, rapid and solvent free extraction technique are exploited to study the photodegradation kinetics of polychlorinated biphenyls "on-fibre". The obtained results show the possibilities of this new approach not only to monitor the photolysis pathways of such compounds but to determine the photoproducts produced at different irradiation times and/or wavelengths. Photoproducts of PCB decomposition were less chlorinated biphenyls, among them some coplanar congeners have been found, which is important from a toxicological point of view.  相似文献

The object of this paper is to investigate the sustainability of water use in human settlements. The water system of a small municipality in northern Italy is discussed as a case study. By measuring water exchanges between different sectors of activity within the municipal borders, and considering underground and surface waters as natural components of this system, a network of flows is built and successively investigated by network analysis, a tool that is comprised in the apparatus of ecosystem ecology. By calculating the reciprocal dependence of compartments, the amount of resource that is involved in cycling, the length of exchange pathways, and the organisation of flows, network analysis shows that the system does not use water in a sustainable manner and provides general criteria for improving sustainability. In this respect, options to improve sustainability are also discussed. The results of this study support the idea that the ecosystem approach can provide an interesting conceptual perspective in which sustainability issues can be framed, and that network analysis is a promising tool to handle these issues in practice.  相似文献

The bandgap of solid-state TiO2 (3.2 eV) enables it to be a useful photocatalyst in the ultraviolet (lambda < 380 nm) region of the spectrum. A clean TiO2 surface in the presence of sunlight therefore enables the removal of harmful NOx gases from the atmosphere by oxidation to nitrates. These properties, in addition to the whiteness, relative cheapness and non-toxicity, make TiO2 ideal for the many de-NOX catalysts that are currently being commercially exploited both in the UK and Japan for concrete paving materials in inner cities. There is need, however, for further academic understanding of the surface reactions involved. Hence, we have used surface specific techniques, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, to investigate the NOx adsorbate reaction at the TiO2 substrate surface.  相似文献

The establishment of an efficient surface water quality monitoring (WQM) network is a critical component in the assessment, restoration and protection of river water quality. A periodic evaluation of monitoring network is mandatory to ensure effective data collection and possible redesigning of existing network in a river catchment. In this study, the efficacy and appropriateness of existing water quality monitoring network in the Kabbini River basin of Kerala, India is presented. Significant multivariate statistical techniques like principal component analysis (PCA) and principal factor analysis (PFA) have been employed to evaluate the efficiency of the surface water quality monitoring network with monitoring stations as the evaluated variables for the interpretation of complex data matrix of the river basin. The main objective is to identify significant monitoring stations that must essentially be included in assessing annual and seasonal variations of river water quality. Moreover, the significance of seasonal redesign of the monitoring network was also investigated to capture valuable information on water quality from the network. Results identified few monitoring stations as insignificant in explaining the annual variance of the dataset. Moreover, the seasonal redesign of the monitoring network through a multivariate statistical framework was found to capture valuable information from the system, thus making the network more efficient. Cluster analysis (CA) classified the sampling sites into different groups based on similarity in water quality characteristics. The PCA/PFA identified significant latent factors standing for different pollution sources such as organic pollution, industrial pollution, diffuse pollution and faecal contamination. Thus, the present study illustrates that various multivariate statistical techniques can be effectively employed in sustainable management of water resources. Highlights ? This study aims to evaluate and monitor the efficacy of a full-scale two-stage multi-soil-layering (TS-MSL) plant in removing fecal contamination from domestic wastewater. The TS-MSL plant under investigation consisted of two units in series, one with a vertical flow regime (VF-MSL) and the other with a horizontal flow regime (HF-MSL). Furthermore, this study attempts to see whether linear model (LM) and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) model can be used to predict total coliform (TC) removal in the TS-MSL system. For 24 months, the TS-MSL system was monitored, with bimonthly measurements recorded at the inlet and outlet of each compartment. Obtained results show removal of 85% of COD, 67% of TP, 27% of TN, and 3 log units of coliforms with good system stability. Thus, the effluent meets the Moroccan water quality code for reuse in the irrigation of green spaces. In addition, as compared to LM, the KNN model (R2 = 0.988) may be considered as an effective method for predicting TC removal in the TS-MSL system. Finally, sensitivity analysis has shown that TC and dissolved oxygen level in the influent were the most influential parameters for predicting TC removal in the TS-MSL system.

Background, aim, and scope  

Freshwater reservoirs can be impacted by several hazardous substances through inputs from agricultural activity, sewage discharges, and groundwater leaching and runoff. The water quality assessment is very important for implementation of the monitoring and remediation programs to minimize the risk promoted by hazardous substances in aquatic ecosystems. Evaluation of the degree of contamination of aquatic environments must not take in account only its chemical characterization but it must be complemented with biological assays, which determine potential toxic effects and allows an integrated evaluation of its effects in populations and aquatic ecosystem communities. The application of this type of strategy has clear advantages allowing a general evaluation of the effects from all the water components, including those due to unknown substances and synergic, antagonistic, or additive effects. There are only a few studies that reported ecotoxicological acute end points, for the assessment of surface water quality, and the relationship among toxicity results and the anthropogenic pollution sources and the seasonal period. The aim of this study was to assess the ecotoxicological characterization of the surface water from Alqueva reservoir (South of Portugal) and to evaluate the influence of anthropogenic sources of pollution and their seasonal variation in its toxicity. The construction of Alqueva reservoir was recently finished (2002) and, to our knowledge, an ecotoxicological assessment of its surface water has not been performed. Because of that, no information is available on the possible impact of pollutants on the biota. The surface water toxicity was assessed using acute and chronic bioassays. The results are to be used for developing a monitoring program, including biological methods.  相似文献
