As Class B biosolids land application has become less acceptable to many local jurisdictions, low-cost processes to achieve Class A standards have become more popular. Prominent among these low-cost processes is thermophilic anaerobic digestion. As a result, thermophilic anaerobic digestion is now a popular topic in wastewater treatment literature, but quantifiable methods for selecting a particular thermophilic process have not been offered. To provide for this need, an empirical model was developed from data collected in thermophilic anaerobic digestion studies conducted using East Bay Municipal Utility District's (Oakland, California) primary and waste activated sludge to feed both bench- and full-scale digesters. The model predicts at which thermophilic temperature and mean cell residence time (MCRT) one process will outperform or equal another, with respect to fecal coliform reduction. The different disinfection efficiencies in the different thermophilic processes might be explained by the presence or absence of high volatile acid and/or un-ionized ammonia levels in the processes' digested sludges. Data from these studies also show an apparent relationship between increased thermophilic temperatures and volatile solids destruction, and between increased temperatures and specific volatile acids production, for digesters operating at a 13-day MCRT and higher, but not for digesters operating at a 2-day MCRT.  相似文献

For organisms, temperature is one of the most important environmental factors and gains increasing importance due to global warming, since increasing temperatures may pose organisms close to their environmental tolerance limits and, thus, they may become more vulnerable to environmental stressors. We analyzed the temperature-dependence of the water-soluble antioxidant capacity of the cladoceran Moina macrocopa and evaluated its life trait variables with temperature (15, 20, 25, 30 °C) and humic substance (HS) concentrations (0, 0.18, 0.36, 0.90, 1.79 mM DOC) as stressors. Temperatures below and above the apparent optimum (20 °C) reduced the antioxidative capacity. Additions of HSs increased body length, but decreased mean lifespan at 15 and 20 °C. There was no clear HS-effect on offspring numbers at 15, 20, and 30 °C. At 25 °C with increasing HS-concentration, lifespan was extended and offspring numbers increased tremendously, reaching 250% of the control. Although the applied HS preparation possesses estrogenic and antiandrogenic activities, a xenohormone mechanism does not seem plausible for the reproductive increase, because comparable effects did not occur at other temperatures. A more convincing explanation appears to be the mitohormesis hypothesis which states that a certain increase of reactive oxygen production leads to improved health and longevity and, with Moina, also to increased offspring numbers. Our results suggest that at least with the eurythermic M. macrocopa, a temperature above the optimum can be beneficial for several life trait variables, even when combined with a chemical stressor. Temperatures approximately 10 °C above its optimum appear to adversely affect the lifespan and reproduction of M. macrocopa. This indicates that this cladoceran species seems to be able to utilize temperature as an ecological resource in a range slightly above its thermal optimum.  相似文献

Liquid manure storages are a significant source of methane (CH4) emissions. Farmers commonly agitate (stir) liquid manure prior to field application to homogenize nutrients and solids. During agitation, manure undergoes mechanical stress and is exposed to the air, disrupting anaerobic conditions. This on-farm study aimed to better understand the effects of agitation on CH4 emissions, and explore the potential for intentional agitation (three times) to disrupt the exponential increase of CH4 emissions in spring and summer. Results showed that agitation substantially increased manure temperature in the study year compared to the previous year, particularly at upper- and mid-depths of the stored manure. The temporal pattern of CH4 emissions was altered by reduced emissions over the subsequent week, followed by an increase during the second week. Microbial analysis indicated that the activity of archaea and methanogens increased after each agitation event, but there was little change in the populations of methanogens, archaea, and bacteria. Overall, CH4 emissions were higher than any of the previous three years, likely due to warmer manure temperatures that were higher than the previous years (despite similar air temperatures). Therefore, intermittent manure agitation with the frequency, duration, and intensity used in this study is not recommended as a CH4 emission mitigation practice.

Implications: The potential to mitigate methane emissions from liquid manure storages by strategically timed agitation was evaluated in a detailed farm-scale study. Agitation was conducted with readily-available farm equipment, and targeted at the early summer to disrupt methanogenic communities when CH4 emissions increase exponentially. Methane emissions were reduced for about one week after agitation. However, agitation led to increased manure temperature, and was associated with increased activity of methanogens. Overall, agitation was associated with similar or higher methane emissions. Therefore, agitation is not recommended as a mitigation strategy.  相似文献

The expected increase in offshore oil exploration and production in the Arctic may lead to crude oil spills along arctic shorelines. To evaluate the potential effectiveness of bioremediation to treat such spills, oil spill bioremediation in arctic sediments was simulated in laboratory microcosms containing beach sediments from Barrow (Alaska), spiked with North Slope Crude, and incubated at varying temperatures and salinities. Biodegradation was measured via respiration rates (CO2 production); volatilization was quantified by gas chromatography/mass spectrophotometry (GC/MS) analysis of hydrocarbons sorbed to activated carbon, and hydrocarbons remaining in the sediment were quantified by GC/flame ionization detector (FID). Higher temperature leads to increased biodegradation by naturally occurring microorganisms, while the release of volatile organic compounds was similar at both temperatures. Increased salinity had a small positive impact on crude oil removal. At higher crude oil dosages, volatilization increased, however CO2 production did not. While only a small percentage of crude oil was completely biodegraded, a larger percentage was volatilized within 6–9 weeks.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown large increases in vehicle emissions when the air conditioner (AC) compressor is engaged. Factors that affect the compressor-on percentage can have a significant impact on vehicle emissions and can also lead to prediction errors in current emissions models if not accounted for properly. During 1996 and 1997, the University of California, Riverside, College of Engineering-Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT) conducted a vehicle activity study for the California Air Resources Board (CARB) in the Sacramento, CA, region. The vehicles were randomly selected from all registered vehicles in the region. As part of this study, ten vehicles were instrumented to collect AC compressor on/off data on a second-by-second basis in the summer of 1997. Temperature and humidity data were obtained and averaged on an hourly basis. The ten drivers were asked to complete a short survey about AC operational preferences. This paper examines the effects of temperature, humidity, refrigerant type, and driver preferences on air conditioning compressor activity. Overall, AC was in use in 69.1% of the trips monitored. The compressor was on an average of 64% of the time during the trips. The personal preference settings had a significant effect on the AC compressor-on percentage but did not interact with temperature. The refrigerant types, however, exhibited a differential response across temperature, which may necessitate separate modeling of the R12 refrigerant-equipped vehicles from the R134A-equipped vehicles. It should be noted that some older vehicles do get retrofitted with new compressors that use R134A; however, none of the vehicles in this study had been retrofitted.  相似文献

We report the first systematic study on the photocatalytic oxidation of humic acid (HA) in artificial seawater (ASW). TiO(2) (Degussa P25) dispersions were used as the catalyst with irradiation from a medium-pressure mercury lamp. The optimum quantity of catalyst was found to be between 2 and 2.5 gl(-1); while the decomposition was fastest at low pH values (pH 4.5 in the range examined), and the optimum air-flow, using an immersion well reactor with a capacity of 400 ml, was 850 ml min(-1). Reactivity increased with air-flow up to this figure, above which foaming prevented operation of the reactor. Using pure oxygen, an optimal flow rate was observed at 300 ml min(-1), above which reactivity remains essentially constant. Following treatment for 1 h, low-salinity water (2700 mg l(-1)) was completely mineralised, whereas ASW (46000 mg l(-1)) had traces of HA remaining. These effects are interpreted and kinetic data presented. To avoid problems of precipitation due to change of ionic strength humic substances were prepared directly in ASW, and the effects of ASW on catalyst suspension and precipitation have been taken into account. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model has been shown to be followed only approximately for the catalytic oxidation of HA in ASW. The activation energy for the reaction derived from an Arrhenius treatment was 17 (+/-0.6) kJ mol(-1).  相似文献

The influence of temperature and solar radiations on the rapid dissipation of DDT from tropical soils was studied by quantifying volatilisation, mineralisation, binding and degradation of ((14)C)-p,p'-DDT in a sandy loam soil. The bulk of the DDT loss occurred by volatilisation, which increased fivefold when the temperature changed from 15 to 45 degrees C. Degradation of DDT to DDE was also faster at higher temperatures. Mineralisation of DDT, though minimal, increased with temperature and time. Higher temperatures also enhanced binding of DDT to soil. Flooding the treated soil further increased volatilisation and degradation, although mineralisation was greatly reduced. Exposure of flooded and unflooded soils treated with DDT to sunlight in quartz, glass and dark tubes for 42 days during summer resulted in significant volatile losses. Volatilisation in the quartz tubes was nearly twice as great as that in the dark tubes The volatilised organics from the quartz tubes contained larger amounts of p,p'-DDE than the glass and dark tubes. Higher rates of volatilisation and degradation were found in flooded soils. Also significant quantities of p,p'-DDD were detected in addition to DDE. The data clearly show that volatilisation is the major mechanism for the rapid dissipation of DDT from Indian soils.  相似文献

Accurate estimates of biogenic volatile organic compound emissions are critical for air quality planning in areas such as Eastern Texas where biogenic emissions comprise a significant fraction of the total volatile organic compound inventory. Uncertainties in biogenic volatile organic chemical emission estimates associated with different land use databases, surface temperature databases, and temperature interpolation methods were quantified and compared. The sensitivity of isoprene emissions to land use classification was investigated by comparing predictions based on land use data recently compiled for Eastern Texas to those based on the Biogenic Emissions Landcover Database version 3.1 (BELD3). Previous studies have only made these comparisons with the previous BELD version 2 database. Isoprene emission increased throughout much of Eastern Texas because areas classified as agricultural or savannah in BELD3 were more accurately classified as Post Oak, Live Oak, mesquite, and juniper in the new database. These results indicate the need for land use studies in areas poorly characterized in the BELD3. The sensitivity of isoprene emission estimates to uncertainties in surface temperatures were investigated by comparing predictions based on two different temperature databases and three different interpolation techniques. Spatial interpolations of surface temperatures collected at available Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) stations in Houston, Austin, and Dallas were similar to the spatial interpolations of surface temperatures obtained from the ETA Data Assimilation System (EDAS). As a result, substantial variations in isoprene emissions were not observed over the majority of the modeling domain; however, differences of 4 F over localized regions produced a 35% difference in isoprene emissions. Comparisons between the isoprene emissions of the three interpolation methods sometimes revealed large variations, with maximum temperature differences of 4 F resulting in 60% differences in isoprene emissions in areas with the highest isoprene emissions. It was noted that the ASOS stations were clustered in urban areas and not in areas with the highest biogenic emissions. More ambient temperature monitors need to be located in rural locations to provide robust estimates of biogenic emissions and facilitate validation of interpolated temperature fields.  相似文献

Seeds of Eucalyptus tetrodonta were sown under ambient or CO(2) enriched (700 microl litre(-1)) conditions in tropical Australia. Four sets of measurements were made, the first two after 12 months, on trees growing either in pots or planted in the ground. The third and fourth set were made after 18 and 30 months exposure to CO(2) enrichment, on trees growing in the ground. After 12 months exposure to CO(2) enrichment, the rate of light-saturated assimilation (Amax) of plants growing in the ground was determined. Responses of CO(2) assimilation to variations in leaf temperature, leaf-to-air vapour pressure deficit (LAVPD), light flux density and CO(2) concentration were also measured in the laboratory using plants growing in large pots. There was no significant difference in Amax between pot and ground located plants. Assimilation of E. tetrodonta was relatively insensitive to changes in LAVPD for both ambient and CO(2) enriched plants but the temperature optimum of assimilation was increased in plants grown and measured under CO(2) enrichment. Plants grown with CO(2) enrichment had an increased rate of light-saturated assimilation and apparent quantum yield was significantly increased by CO(2) enrichment. In contrast, carboxylation efficiency was decreased significantly by CO(2) enrichment. After 18 months growth with CO(2) enrichment, there was no sign of a decline in assimilation rate compared to measurements undertaken after 12 months. At low LAVPD values, assimilation rate was not influenced by CO(2) treatment but at moderate to high LAVPD, plants grown under CO(2) enrichment exhibited a larger assimilation rate than control plants. Specific leaf area and chlorophyll contents decreased in response to CO(2) enrichment, whilst foliar soluble protein contents and chlorophyll a/b ratios were unaffected by CO(2) treatment. Changes in soluble protein and chlorophyll contents in response to CO(2) enrichment did not account for changes in assimilation between treatments. After 30 months exposure to CO(2) enrichment, the rate of light-saturated assimilation was approximately 50% larger than controls and this enhancement was larger than that observed after 18 months exposure to CO(2) enrichment.  相似文献

The biotransformation and mineralization of a mixture of two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), anthracene and pyrene, which are known contaminants of soil and groundwater, by an enrichment culture in the presence or absence of 100 mg l(-1) Tergitol NP-10, a non-ionic surfactant, and at temperatures of 10 degrees C and 25 degrees C were investigated. The overall biotransformation of 2 mg l(-1) total PAHs with free cell suspensions in batch culture was greater than 97.2% at both examined temperatures. At 25 degrees C, the overall mineralization of anthracene was 48.8% and that of pyrene was 66.1%. However, the decrease of temperature to 10 degrees C had a negative effect on the mineralization of PAHs and reduced it to 18.5% and 61.5% for anthracene and pyrene, respectively. Using a higher PAHs concentration of 20 mg l(-1) at 25 degrees C, the overall biotransformation of anthracene was 80.7% and that of pyrene was 100%, where only 17.3% anthracene and 7.6% pyrene were mineralized to carbon dioxide and water. The addition of surfactant at 25 degrees C increased the overall mineralization of anthracene and pyrene to 33.0% and 27.6%, respectively. However, the addition of surfactant at 10 degrees C had a negative impact on the overall biotransformation of anthracene and pyrene, reducing them to 20.6% and 14.0%, respectively. These results have significant implications in the bioremediation of PAHs-contaminated sites.  相似文献

Cadmium is perhaps environmentally the most significant heavy metal in soils. Bioavailability, remobilization and fate of Cd entering in soils are usually controlled by adsorption-desorption reactions on Fe oxides. Adsorption of Cd on soil colloids including Fe oxides has been extensively studied but Cd desorption from such soil minerals has received relatively little attention. Some factors that affect Cd adsorption on goethite include pH, temperature, aging, type of index cations, Cd concentrations, solution ionic strength and presence of organic and inorganic ions. This research was conducted to study the influence of pH, temperature and aging on Cd desorption from goethite. Batch experiments were conducted to evaluate Cd desorption from goethite with 0.01 M Ca(NO3)2. In these experiments Cd desorption was observed at 20, 40 and 70 degrees C in combination with aging for 16 h, 30, 90 and 180 d from goethite that adsorbed Cd from solutions containing initial Cd concentrations of 20, 80 and 180 microM. Following the adsorption step Cd desorption was measured by 15 successive desorptions after aging at various temperatures. At the lowest amount of initially adsorbed Cd and equilibrium pH 5.5, cumulative Cd desorption decreased from 71% to 17% with aging from 16 h to 180 d and the corresponding decrease at equilibrium pH 6.0 was from 32% to 3%. There was a substantial decrease in Cd desorption with increasing equilibration temperature. For example, in goethite with the lowest amount of initial adsorption at equilibrium pH 5.5, cumulative Cd desorption decreased from 71% to 31% with increase in temperature from 20 to 70 degrees C, even after 16 h. Dissolution of Cd adsorbed goethite in 1M HCl, after 15 successive desorptions with 0.01 M Ca(NO3)2, indicated that approximately 60% of the Cd was surface adsorbed. Overall, dissolution kinetics data revealed that 23% to 88% Cd could not be desorbed, which could possibly be diffused into the cracks and got entrapped in goethite crystals. At elevated temperature increased equilibrium solution pH favoured the formation of CaCO3 and CdCO3 which reasonably decreased Cd desorption. Cadmium speciation showed the formation of calcite and otavite minerals at 40 and 70 degrees C due to increase in pH (>9.5) during aging. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) of these samples also revealed the formation of CaCO3 at elevated temperatures with aging. While mechanisms such as Cd diffusion and/or entrapment into fissures and cracks in goethite structure with increase in temperature and aging are possible.  相似文献

Mercury (Hg) emissions from the soils taken from two different sites (deciduous and coniferous forests) in the Adirondacks were measured in outdoor and laboratory experiments. Some of the soil samples were irradiated to eliminate biological activity. The result from the outdoor measurements with different soils suggests the Hg emission from the soils is partly limited by fallen leaves covering the soils which helps maintain relatively high soil moisture and limits the amount of heat and solar radiation reaching the soil surface. In laboratory experiments exposure to UV-A (365 nm) had no significant effect on the Hg emissions while the Hg emissions increased dramatically during exposure to UV-B (302 nm) light suggesting UV-B directly reduced soil-associated Hg. Overall these results indicate that for these soils biotic processes have a relatively constant and smaller influence on the Hg emission from the soil than the more variable abiotic processes.  相似文献

The biochars were prepared from straws of canola, corn, soybean, and peanut at different temperatures of 300, 500, and 700 °C by means of oxygen-limited pyrolysis. Amelioration effects of these biochars on an acidic Ultisol were investigated with incubation experiments, and application rate of biochars was 10 g/kg. The incorporation of these biochars induced the increase in soil pH, soil exchangeable base cations, base saturation, and cation exchange capacity and the decrease in soil exchangeable acidity and exchangeable Al. The ameliorating effects of biochars on acidic soil increased with increase in their pyrolysis temperature. The contribution of oxygen-containing functional groups on the biochars to their ameliorating effects on the acidic soil decreased with the rise in pyrolysis temperature, while the contribution from carbonates in the biochars changed oppositely. The incorporation of the biochars led to the decrease in soil reactive Al extracted by 0.5 mol/L CuCl2, and the content of reactive Al was decreased with the increase in pyrolysis temperature of incorporated biochars. The biochars generated at 300 °C increased soil organically complexed Al due to ample quantity of oxygen-containing functional groups such as carboxylic and phenolic groups on the biochars, while the biochars generated at 500 and 700 °C accelerated the transformation of soil exchangeable Al to hydroxyl-Al polymers due to hydrolysis of Al at higher pH. Therefore, the crop straw-derived biochars can be used as amendments for acidic soils and the biochars generated at relatively high temperature have great ameliorating effects on the soils.  相似文献

Both frequency and intensity of disturbances in many ecosystems have been greatly enhanced by increasing human activities. As a consequence, the short-lived plant species including many exotics might have been dramatically increased in terms of both richness and abundance on our planet, while many long-lived species might have been lost. Such conclusions can be drawn from broadly observed successional cycles in both theoretical and empirical studies. This article discusses 2 major issues that have been largely overlooked in current ecosystem management policies and conservation efforts: i) life history constraints; and ii) future global warming trends. It also addresses the importance of these 2 factors in balancing disturbance frequency and intensity for optimal biodiversity maintenance and ecosystem management.  相似文献

The ultra high-lime with aluminum process (UHLA) has the ability to remove sulfate and chloride in addition to other scale-forming materials from recycled cooling water. Laboratory experiments have demonstrated that the UHLA process can achieve high chloride removal from recycled cooling water, and an equilibrium model was developed to describe chemical behavior during chloride removal. This paper describes the influence of pH, temperature, and initial chloride concentration on chloride removal by UHLA and identifies the precipitated solids formed during treatment. The optimum pH for maximum chloride removal efficiency was found to be 12 +/- 0.2. Chloride removal efficiency was higher at a high initial chloride concentration than at a low initial chloride concentration with the chemical doses used. Solids formed during UHLA treatment were identified by x-ray diffraction as calcium chloroaluminate, tricalcium hydroxyaluminate, and tetracalcium hydroxyaluminate. This supports the assumption of the equilibrium model that these compounds are present and form a solid solution.  相似文献

The physical state of the Baltic Sea in possible future climates is approached by numerical model experiments with a regional coupled ocean-atmosphere model driven by different global simulations. Scenarios and recent climate simulations are compared to estimate changes. The sea surface is clearly warmer by 2.9 degrees C in the ensemble mean. The horizontal pattern of average annual mean warming can largely be explained in terms of ice-cover reduction. The transfer of heat from the atmosphere to the Baltic Sea shows a changed seasonal cycle: a reduced heat loss in fall, increased heat uptake in spring, and reduced heat uptake in summer. The interannual variability of surface temperature is generally increased. This is associated with a smoothed frequency distribution in northern basins. The overall heat budget shows increased solar radiation to the sea surface, which is balanced by changes of the other heat flux components.  相似文献

Submersed plants can be useful in reducing heavy metal concentrations in stormwater, since they can accumulate large amounts of heavy metals in their shoots. To investigate the effects of water temperature and salinity on the metal uptake of two submersed plant species, Elodea canadensis (Michx.) and Potamogeton natans (L.), these plants were grown in the presence of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb at 5, 11, and 20 degrees C in combination with salinities of 0, 0.5, and 5 per thousand. The metal concentrations in the plant tissue increased with increasing temperature in both species; the exception was the concentration of Pb in Elodea, which increased with decreasing salinity. Metal concentrations at high temperature or low salinity were up to twice those found at low temperature or high salinity. Plant biomass affected the metal uptake, with low biomass plants having higher metal concentrations than did high biomass plants.  相似文献

The concentrations of CF(3)-containing compounds in archived air samples collected at Cape Meares, Oregon, from 1978 to 1997, at Point Barrow, Alaska, from 1995 to 1998, and at Palmer Station, Antarctica, from 1991 to 1997, were determined by high resolution gas chromatography and high resolution mass spectrometry. The CF(3)-containing compounds measured by this method and discussed here are: the perfluorinated compound, C(3)F(8) (FC 218); four perhalogenated compounds, CF(3)Cl (CFC 13), CF(3)CF(2)Cl (CFC 115), CF(3)CFCl(2) (CFC 114a), and CF(3)Br (Halon 1301); and three hydrofluorocompounds, CF(3)H (HFC 23), CF(3)CH(3) (HFC 143a), and CF(3)CH(2)F (HFC 134a). For four of these compounds, very few measurements have been previously reported. The atmospheric concentrations of all of the CF(3)-containing compounds continuously increased in time over the sample collection periods. From these data, the annual rates of emission into the atmosphere have been estimated. The emission rates fall into one of three distinct categories. The annual emission rates of C(3)F(8), CF(3)H, CF(3)CH(3), and CF(3)CH(2)F have continuously increased over the last two decades. That of CF(3)CFCl(2) has decreased continuously. Emission rates for CF(3)Cl, CF(3)CF(2)Cl, and CF(3)Br reached maximum levels in the late 1980s, and have been decreasing in the 1990s. The emission rates of C(3)F(8), CF(3)CH(3) and CF(3)CH(2)F were nearly zero 20 years ago but have increased rapidly during the last decade.  相似文献
