Field and laboratory trials were carried out for a bentonite amended weathered granite landfill liner. The trials were undertaken to gain experience in the installation method, and to establish the appropriate mixing techniques and mix design. It was established that a bentonite-amended weathered granite liner could be constructed on steep slopes. This paper presents the results of the trials, which included both field and laboratory permeability testing. It was found that the success of a soil bentonite liner is critically dependent on the mixture having the right moisture content at the time of compaction.  相似文献

The Golden Horn (GH) sediments, which consist mainly of clay, organic substances and heavy metals, are formed with the contribution of industrial and domestic wastes released in the Golden Horn Estuary. On account of their mineralogical and chemical composition, these sediments may be regarded as a suitable raw material for briquette production. In this study, the utilization of GH dredged bottom sediments was investigated for preparation of briquettes. Dried GH sediments were mixed with lime and sand in different percentages, moulded at various squeezing pressures and hardened under several steam pressure values by autoclaving. The briquettes produced through these different process conditions were tested for compressive strength according to the Turkish standards (TS705). It was found that variations in compressive strength were dependent on the amount of lime (Ca(OH)2) and sand (SiO2) added. Results show that the compressive strength increased with increasing lime and decreasing sand in the mixtures prepared for briquettes. It is concluded that briquettes with a compressive strength value of 294 kgf cm(-2) can be produced. This allows the GH sediments to be taken into account as a raw material in brick production, as far as compressive strength requirements are concerned. This possibility may represent an important way either for reducing environmental pollution or for recycling waste materials in industrial applications.  相似文献

The potential of a lateritic soil and a marine clay, typical of those found in hot and humid climatic regions, was assessed for use as a landfill liner material. A series of tests were conducted - physical and chemical, batch adsorption, column, hydraulic conductivity, etc., - to evaluate the heavy metal sorption capacity, chemical compatibility of hydraulic conductivity, and transport parameters of the soils. Experimental results showed that the marine clay had better adsorption capacity than that of the lateritic soil and that its hydraulic conductivity was an order of magnitude lower. In addition, the hydraulic conductivities of both soils when permeated with low concentration heavy metal solutions were below 1x10(-7)cm/s. When permeated with Cr, Pb, Cd, Zn, and Ni solutions, the retardation factors of the lateritic soil and the marine clay ranged from 10 to 98 and 37 to 165, respectively, while the diffusion coefficients ranged from 1.0x10(-5) to 7.5x10(-6) and 3.0 to 9.14x10(-7)cm2/s, respectively. For both soils, Cr and Pb were retained relatively well, while Cd, Zn, and Ni were more mobile. The marine clay had higher retardation factors and lower diffusion coefficients, and its hydraulic conductivity was more compatible with Cr solution, than that of the lateritic soil. In general, the properties of the marine clay indicate that it has significant advantages over the lateritic soil as landfill liner material.  相似文献

Legislation from developed countries indicates that planting trees on containment landfills is generally forbidden. Concerns centre on the supposition that tree roots can penetrate into and through capping materials, and will thus compromise control of water ingress into waste, and allow the escape of landfill gas. An associated anxiety is that if roots penetrate a clay cap they could cause desiccation and cracking of the clay through excessive moisture abstraction. It is also considered that trees growing on the relatively shallow soil above a landfill cap could be especially prone to uprooting. However, a review of the world literature indicates that maximum depths achieved by tree roots are usually between 1–2 m. Almost 90% of a tree's roots may be found in the upper 0.6 m of soil. Tree roots are highly sensitive to environmental conditions and their downward penetration can be restricted by a number of soil factors including compaction, poor aeration and infertility. A detailed study of these factors indicates that the materials used for capping landfill sites, such as HDPE (high density polyethylene) and compacted clays, can provide an effective barrier to downward root growth. The available information also suggests that tree roots are extremely unlikely to be a primary cause of desiccation cracking in a clay cap owing to their inability to extract more than about one-quarter of the total moisture held in a clay of the density required to ensure a permeability of 1×10−9m s−1. Trees growing on landfill sites with a rootable soil depth of at least 1.5 m should be at no greater risk of windthrow than most forest trees on undisturbed sites. Methods are available to assess the likelihood of windthrow. In any event, windthrow should not cause disruption of a cap, due to the inability of tree roots to penetrate HDPE, or mineral materials compacted to a bulk density of 1.8 g cm−3.  相似文献

In poultry industry chicken feathers are normally hydrolyzed and used to prepare animal feed. In this work the use of this material to prepare films was investigated. Keratins were extracted from chicken feathers with 2-mercaptoethanol in concentrated urea solution using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The effect of varying the amount of sorbitol on properties of chicken feather keratin (CFK) was investigated. As the concentration of plasticizer increased, the moisture content (MC) of these films increase, the monolayer MC increased from 0.060 (without plasticizer) to 0.482 g water/g dry matter (0.30 g sorbitol/g keratin). The water vapor permeability (WVP) varied between 0.096 g/m s Pa and 8.098 g/m s Pa for films without sorbitol and with 0.30 g sorbitol/g keratin, respectively. Film strength decreased from 5.13 MPa to 0.45 MPa and the elongation at break achieved the maximum value of 52.75% for samples with 0.02 g sorbitol/g keratin. The dry matter density didn’t change significantly, varying between 0.86–0.89 g/cm3 for all samples. Films with potential applications in food packaging can be obtained from CFKs. However, further researches are necessary to decrease film solubility and increase mechanical resistance.  相似文献

Leakage rates are evaluated for a landfill barrier system having a compacted clay liner (CCL) underlain by a vadose zone of variable thickness. A numerical unsaturated flow model SEEP/W is used to simulate the moisture flow regime and steady-state leakage rates for the cases of unsaturated zones with different soil types and thicknesses. The results of the simulations demonstrate that harmonic mean hydraulic conductivity of coarse textured vadose zones is 3-4 orders of magnitude less than saturated hydraulic conductivity; whereas, the difference is only one order of magnitude for fine textured vadose zones. For both coarse and fine textured vadose zones, the effective hydraulic conductivity of the barrier system and the leakage rate to an underlying aquifer increases with increasing thickness of the vadose zone and ultimately reaches an asymptotic value for a coarse textured vadose zone thickness of about 10m and a fine textured vadose zone thickness of about 5m. Therefore, the fine and coarse textured vadose zones thicker than about 5m and 10m, respectively, act as an effective part of the barrier systems examined. Although the thickness of vadose zone affects the effective hydraulic conductivity of the overall barrier system, the results demonstrated that the hydraulic conductivity of the CCL is the dominant factor controlling the steady-state leakage rates through barrier systems having single low permeability clay layers.  相似文献

High density polyethylene (HDPE)/bamboo composites with different nanoclay and maleated polyethylene (MAPE) contents were fabricated by melt compounding. The compounding characteristics, clay dispersion, HDPE crystallization, and mechanical properties of the composites were studied. The equilibrium torque during compounding decreased with use of clay masterbatch and increased with the addition of MAPE. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) data showed that the clay was exfoliated only when 1% clay was added to pure HDPE without MAPE. For HDPE/bamboo systems, MAPE was necessary to achieve clay exfoliation. For pure HDPE system, both dynamic and static bending moduli increased, while impact strength decreased with increased clay loading. For the HDPE/bamboo fiber composites, tensile strength, bending modulus and strength were improved with the use of MAPE. The use of the clay in the system led to reduced mechanical properties. Techniques such as pre-coating fibers with clay–MAPE mixture are needed to enhance the synergetic effect of the clay and bamboo fiber on the composite properties in the future study.  相似文献

Landfill bottom liners are generally constructed with natural clay soils due to their high strength and low hydraulic conductivity characteristics. However, in recent years it is increasingly difficult to find locally available clay soils that satisfy the required engineering properties. Fine grained soils such as sepiolite and zeolite may be used as alternative materials in the constructions of landfill bottom liners. A study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of using natural clay rich in kaolinite, sepiolite, zeolite, and their mixtures as a bottom liner material. Unconfined compression tests, swell tests, hydraulic conductivity tests, batch and column adsorption tests were performed on each type of soil and sepiolite–zeolite mixtures. The results of the current study indicate that sepiolite is the dominant material that affects both the geomechanical and geoenvironmental properties of these alternative liners. An increase in sepiolite content in the sepiolite–zeolite mixtures increased the strength, swelling potential and metal adsorption capacities of the soil mixtures. Moreover, hydraulic conductivity of the mixtures decreased significantly with the addition of sepiolite. The utilization of sepiolite–zeolite materials as a bottom liner material allowed for thinner liners with some reduction in construction costs compared to use of a kaolinite-rich clay.  相似文献

The performance of ordinary and organophilic clays in the solidification and stabilization process was investigated with respect to the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and leaching of phenol‐contaminated soil. The samples contained 2,000 mg/kg of phenol. White cement (15 and 30 percent by weight [wt%]) was used as binder, while ordinary and organophilic clays (8, 15, and 30 wt%) were applied as additives for reducing the harmful effects of phenol interference in cement hydration with a 28‐day curing time. The results revealed that the UCS is reduced by increasing the amount of clays. The values of UCS of all samples met the minimum standards specified for disposal in sanitary landfills determined by developed countries. The leaching test demonstrated that the degree of leaching diminished with increased clay content in all samples of both clay types. This reduction was observed to be greater in samples containing organophilic clay than in bentonite clay samples. Furthermore, the best composition of the materials tested was determined to be 30 wt% white cement plus 13.3 wt% organophilic clay with a compressive strength of 3,839 kPa, phenol removal percentage of 80 percent, and a cost of $67 per ton of contaminated soil.  相似文献

Water treatment plant sludge and municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash are non-hazardous residues, and they can be reprocessed to produce useful materials for city public works. In this study, an effort was endeavored to investigate the properties of water permeable bricks made of water treatment sludge and bottom ash without involving an artificial aggregate step. The water treatment plant sludge was dried and ground, and the bottom ash was subjected to magnetic separation to remove ferrous metals. Both sludge and bottom ash were ground and sieved to a size of <2mm. Different contents of water treatment sludge (70-95% by weight) were mixed with bottom ash and the blocks were molded under a pressure of 110 kg/cm2. Thereafter, the molded blocks were sintered at temperatures of 900-1200 degrees C for 60-360 min. The compressive strength, permeability and water absorption rate of the sintered brick were examined and compared to relevant standards. The amount of bottom ash added in the mixture with water treatment sludge affects both the compressive strength and the permeability of the sintered bricks. The two effects are antonymous as higher bottom ash content will develop a beehive configuration and have more voids in the brick. It is concluded that a 20% weight content of bottom ash under a sintering condition of 1150 degrees C for 360 min can generate a brick with a compressive strength of 256 kg/cm2, a water absorption ratio of 2.78% and a permeability of 0.016 cm/s.  相似文献

The stabilization potential of negatively charged sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) solution was assessed through investigation of its retention on clays under environmental conditions that promote soil desiccation. Sodium montmorillonite and kaolinite, commonly used in clayey soils, were mixed with aqueous CMC solutions in concentrations ranging from 0 to 10 g/L. These samples were dried in a specially-designed desiccation chamber which was operated at a temperature of 25°C and relative humidity of 30%. The results show an inverse proportionality between liquid loss and CMC concentration. Liquid loss from clayey soil follows the first-order reaction with a rate constant in the range of 4.6–6.7 mg/h. CMC half-lives on sodium montmorillonite during desiccation ranged from 103 to 181 h for an aqueous concentration range of 0.5–10 g/L compared to 108 h for distilled water. For kaolinite, more liquid was retained at 10 g/L CMC concentration than at other concentrations, but liquid retention was generally insignificant. These conclusions are valid for a desiccation duration of 890 h, a time that is reasonably simulative of the duration of exposures of bare ground surfaces to weather elements. The experimental results are explained in terms of the role of CMC molecular interactions with clay minerals in controlling fluid flow to desiccating clay surfaces.  相似文献

Performance of compacted clay liners commonly used as landfill barrier systems can be subject to decline in terms of hydraulic conductivity if left exposed to atmospheric conditions for an extended period of time prior to placement of overlaying layers. The resulting desiccation cracking can lead to increased hydraulic conductivity. Desiccation crack intensity was studied for three clayey soils commonly used for construction of landfill barrier system in a relatively large scale test setup exposed to real time atmospheric conditions over a complete annual cycle. A white separator geotextile cover was presumed to be capable of reducing the intensity of desiccation cracking through absorbing and maintaining higher amounts of moisture and reducing the temperature of the soil surface in comparison to a directly exposed soil surface. Desiccation cracking was monitored using a digital imaging technique for three compacted clay liners in two sets, one open to air and the second covered with the white geotextile. Crack intensity factor approached a relatively stable phase after certain cycles corresponding to atmospheric dry wet cycles. The results indicated that the white separator geotextile was capable of reducing the crack intensity factor by 37.4–45.9% throughout the experiment including the cyclic phase of desiccation cracking. During the stable phase, the maximum reduction in crack intensity factor of 90.4% as a result of applying geotextile cover was observed for the soil with the lowest plastic index and clay content and therefore the lowest magnitude of crack intensity factor. The other two soils with similar clay content but different plastic index showed 23.6% and 52.2% reductions in crack intensity factor after cyclic phase when covered with geotextile.  相似文献

Solidification in a cementitious matrix is a viable alternative for low-level nuclear waste management; it is therefore important to understand the behavior and properties of such wasteforms. We have examined the cementitious solidification of simulated off-gas waste streams resulting from the vitrification of low-level nuclear waste. Different possible methods for scrubbing the off-gasses from a vitrifier give rise to three possible types of waste compositions: acidic (from aqueous dissolution of volatile NOx and POx carried over from the vitrifier), basic (from neutralizing the former with sodium hydroxide), and fully carbonated (arising from a direct-combustion vitrifier). Six binder compositions were tested in which ordinary Portland cement was replaced at different proportions by fly ash and/or ground granulated blast furnace slag. A high solution to binder ratio of 1l/1 kg was used to minimize the volume of the wasteform and 10% attapulgite clay was added to all mixes to ensure that the fresh mix did not segregate prior to setting. The 28-day compressive strengths decreased when a high proportion of cement was replaced with fly ash, but were increased significantly when the cement was replaced with slag. The heats of hydration at early age for the various solids compositions decreased when cement was replaced with either fly ash or slag; however, for the fly ash mix the low heat was also associated with a significant decrease in compressive strength. High curing temperature (60 degrees C) or the use of extra-fine slag did not significantly affect the compressive strength. Recommendations for choice of binder formulations and treatment of off-gas condensates are discussed.  相似文献

The arsenic–iron sludge generated in most of the treatment systems around the world is discharged into the nearest watercourse, which leads to accumulative rise of arsenic and iron concentrations in water. In this study, attempts were made to use the arsenic–iron sludge in making bricks and to analyze the corresponding effects on brick properties. The water treatment plant sludge is extremely close to brick clay in chemical composition. So, the sludge could be a potential substitute for brick clay. This study involved the addition of sludge with ratios 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% of the total weight of sludge–clay mixture. The physical and chemical properties of the produced bricks were then determined and evaluated and compared to control brick made entirely from clay. Results of different tests indicated that the sludge proportion and firing temperature were the two key factors in determining the quality of bricks. The compressive strength of 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% sludge containing brick samples were found to be 14.1 MPa, 15.1 MPa, 9.4 MPa and 7.1 MPa, respectively. These results indicate that the compressive strength of prepared bricks initially increased and then decreased with the increase of sludge proportion. Leaching characteristics of burnt bricks were determined with the variation of pH at a constant temperature. The optimum amount of sludge that could be mixed with clay to produce good bonding of clay–sludge bricks was found to be 6% (safely maximum) by weight.  相似文献

Lightweight Concrete Containing an Alkaline Resistant Starch-Based Aquagel   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Starch aquagel-based lightweight concrete has properties similar to those of other lightweight concrete products. However, starch aquagels are unstable in the strongly alkaline conditions typical of Portland Cement-based concrete and may interfere with the setting process. The effect of alkali treatments on the physical, mechanical, and functional properties of starch aquagels and aquagels from starch/polymer blends was investigated. Starch was blended at 100–115°C in a twin-screw extruder with five different polymers to determine whether the blends improved alkaline resistance. Polymer blends containing 5%, 15%, and 30% of the polymer hydrated and formed aquagels when equilibrated in water for 24 h. However, equilibrium moisture content was lower for the blends compared to the starch control. Aquagels equilibrated in 0.15 N NaOH swelled, lost compressive strength and had greater than 90% moisture. The blend of starch and 30% PVOH absorbed less moisture and was more resistant to alkaline dissolution in 1 N NaOH than the other blends tested making it a more suitable material for aquagel-based concrete. The moisture content of starch-based aquagels and mixing time were critical factors in determining setting times. The size of aquagel blends had a minor effect on density and compressive strength.  相似文献

Physical parameters of 12 co-compost cover materials were experimentally determined and predicted variations in airflow characteristics were evaluated under varying moisture contents. Predicted air-filled porosity showed high correlation with measured air-filled porosity, facilitating development of a reliable model of air-filled porosity that makes it possible to predict the effect of varying moisture content and compost bed height on air-filled porosity and permeability. Predicted air-filled porosity decreased with increasing moisture content and compost depth for all materials. Air-filled porosity of corn stalks, oat straw, soybean straw, leaves, alfalfa hay, wheat straw, silage, wood shavings and sawdust was in the range of 38-99%. Turkey litter, soil compost blend and beef manure showed air-filled porosity values less than 30% near saturation and the bottom of pile. In concert with the findings of other researchers, effective particle size of all materials increased with increasing moisture content from 20% to 80% of water holding capacity (WHC). It increased dramatically near saturation. In general, permeability increased with increasing air-filled porosity and decreasing bulk density, but the relationship between permeability and moisture content is complex. Permeability is dependent on the balance between particle size and air-filled porosity. If the influence of aggregated particle size on the permeability is significant, it will compensate for the effect of reduced air-filled porosity caused by compaction and moisture content. In this case, permeability will increase; in the reverse case, it will decrease. Permeability decreased for corn stalks, oat straw, silage, wood shavings, soybean straw, sawdust, turkey litter and wheat straw with increasing moisture content from 20% WHC to 50% WHC, regardless of the depth of the compost bed. But the permeability increased with increasing moisture level from 50% to 80% WHC at moderate to shallow simulated bed depths. The soil compost blend and leaves showed the permeability increasing when the moisture increased not only from 50% to 80% WHC but also from 20% to 50% WHC. Permeability of alfalfa hay and beef manure always decreased with increasing moisture levels and pile depth. In this study the maximum wet bulk density and mechanical strength decreased with increasing the moisture content. The method described for determining physical properties under varying moisture contents and compost bed depths will be very useful for designing and modeling airflow characteristics of a mortality composting process with a variety of materials.  相似文献

A landfill site in northern Wales which lies only a few metres above the local water table was lined with a mixture of locally available sand and imported bentonite. To test the permeability and leachate attenuation capacity of this liner special test chambers lined with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) were constructed underneath the sand-bentonite liner and instrumented to collect samples of any infiltrating water. Over an 18-month period there has been less than 1 mm of infiltration from a completed section of the landfill into the test chambers. No evidence of contamination of the groundwater by the landfill has been detected in test wells. The sampling continues.  相似文献

Bricks produced from sewage sludge in different compositions were investigated. Results of the tests indicated that the sludge proportion is a key factor in determining the brick quality. Increasing the sludge content results in a decrease in brick shrinkage, bulk density, and compressive strength. Brick weight loss on ignition was mainly due to the contribution of the contained organic matter from the sludge being burnt off during the firing process, as well as inorganic substances found in both clay and sludge. The physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of the bricks that were supplemented with various proportions of dried sludge from 10 to 40wt% and generally complied with the General Specification for Brick as per the Malaysian Standard MS 7.6:1972, which dictates the requirements for clay bricks used in walling in general. A standard leaching test method also showed that the leaching of metals from the bricks is very low.  相似文献
