The non-indigenous green crab (Carcinus maenas) is an important predator on bivalve wild beds in coastal areas worldwide. This study explored size-dependent green crab prey preference on American oysters (Crassostrea virginica), blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), and soft-shell clams (Mya arenaria) in a productive coastal system of Atlantic Canada. Using two sizes of prey and three different experimental manipulations, small, medium, and large green crabs were given a choice among these three bivalves, and their daily feeding rates were monitored over the course of 3 days. For both prey sizes, green crabs showed an early feeding preference for soft-shell clams and, only as they declined in numbers, a switch toward mussels and subsequently toward oysters. We found that such changes in the timing (order) of prey preference are related to prey differences in shell thickness, a fairly reliable indicator of prey shell strength.  相似文献

The effect of some homogenates, peptones and amino acids upon the positive rheotactic behaviour of Asterias rubens L. is studied. It was found that homogenates of Mytilus edulis, solutions of bacteriological peptone L 37, L-glutamic acid and a mixture of 10 common amino acids acted as repellents and altered the positive rheotactic behaviour of A. rubens. The experimental evidence suggests that the active compound(s) of the homogenates of M. edulis and of the solution of L 37 is a heat stable substance whose molecular weight is lower than ca. 30,000. It was found that A. rubens sensed L-glutamic acid in concentrations of the part per million range. Sinergistic interaction was found between L-glutamic acid and a mixture of one or more other 9 common amino acids. It is shown that the sensitivity of A. rubens to one of the repellents, bacteriological peptone L 37, changes during the year. Among other factors, seasonal changes in sea-water temperature could account for this.  相似文献

Information concerning the way juvenile crabs choose their diet from a variety of prey types can be useful for a better understanding of community dynamics, as well as for the adequate management of natural resources. Prey size and species selection by juvenile Carcinus maenas (15-35 mm carapace width, CW) and Cancer pagurus (20-40 mm CW) feeding on four bivalves of contrasting shell morphology were investigated. When offered a wide size range of Mytilus edulis, Ostrea edulis, Crassostrea gigas, and Cerastoderma edule presented individually, crabs generally showed evidence of size-selective predation. Cancer pagurus selected larger mussels relative to the size of their chelae (relative prey size, RPS) than did Carcinus maenas of similar and even larger carapace width. However, the RPS of selected O. edulis and Cerastoderma edule were similar for all crabs, suggesting that certain prey features constitute effective barriers even to the powerful chelae of Cancer pagurus. When offered a wide size range of mussels and oysters simultaneously, all crabs consistently selected mussels. When offered O. edulis and Crassostrea gigas, crabs consumed both these oyster species in similar numbers. Carcinus maenas consumed similar numbers of mussels and cockles; Cancer pagurus, however, showed no preference for either prey in the smaller size classes but selected more mussels than cockles as prey increased in size. Although previous studies report that adult Carcinus maenas select prey species according to their profitability (amount of food ingested per unit of handling time, milligrams per second), consumption rates of the size classes of prey selected by juvenile shore crabs did not always parallel prey value. Although variations in crab strength can account for many of the differences between the foraging strategy of juvenile and adult C. maenas, our results suggest that juvenile crabs are less species selective than adults as a result of the restrictions imposed on small individuals that have limited access to larger prey.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments have been conducted on byssus thread production by two species of mussel, Mytilus edulis L. and Modiolus modiolus (L.), representing the epibyssate and endobyssate species of the Mytilidae, respectively. Mussels were placed in seven particle sizes of sediment ranging from 50 m to 16 mm for 12 d. The number of byssus threads per mussel, length of threads, number of threads per particle and size of pads were then recorded. Modiolus modiolus (endobyssate) produced more threads than Mytilus edulis (epibyssate). M. edulis produced most threads in the size range 2 to 16 mm and Modiolus modiolus in the size range 500 to 1000 m. M. modiolus produced longer threads than Mytilus edulis. Both species produced longer threads in particle sizes finer than 2 mm. M. edulis produced smaller pads than Modiolus modiolus. Both species produced larger pads in sediments coarser than 1 000 m. Results were also analysed in terms of attachment units (a thread attached to one or more particles, or a particle to which more than one thread is attached). The thread:particle ratio of the attachment units ranged from ca. 1:10 in the finest sediments to ca. 10:1 in the coarsest sediments. Mytilus edulis attached more threads to single particles (72% of attachment units) than Modiolus modiolus (37% of attachment units). M. modiolus had a wider spread of ratios in the finer particle sizes than Mytilus edulis. The significance of our results are discussed in relation to the ecology and palaeoecology of epibyssate and endobysste species.  相似文献

Mussels (Mytilus edulis) transferred in net bags from clean to chronically mercury polluted water readily accumulated mercury during an exposure period of three months. Growth of the transplanted mussels had a diluting effect on the mercury concentration, but the absolute weight of mercury uptake increased throughout the entire period, though there was a tendency for decreased efficiency of the removal of mercury per liter of water filtered by the mussels. Mussels were also translocated from polluted to clean (laboratory) water to depurate mercury. The biological half-lives of mercury was 293 d for M. edulis from the chronically polluted area in contrast to only 53 d for mussels from a temporary massive mercury polluted area near a chemical deposit. In both cases about 75% of the total mercury in the mussels was inorganic, and it is suggested that both inorganic and organic mercury species were immobilized in mussels from the long-term mercury polluted area, whereas the immobilization capacity was exceeded in the short-term mercury exposed mussels near the chemical deposit. Very slow elimination of mercury was observed in the deposit-feeding bivalve Macoma balthica from the chronically polluted area, and about 6% of the total mercury was methyl-+phenyl-mercury. This is more than three times lower than found in M. edulis from the same collecting site. A pronounced difference in the mercury speciation (i.e., total mercury, total organic mercury, methyl-mercury and phenyl-mercury) in M. edulis from the two mercury polluted areas is thought to reflect the different character of the mercury pollution in the two areas.  相似文献

The accumulation of cadmium was investigated in two species of oysters [Crassostrea gigas (L.) and Ostrea edulis (L.)] from the same environment and in oysters of the same species (O. edulis) from two different environments (contaminated and uncontaminated), under controlled laboratory conditions (33‰ salinity, 10°C, 100 μg Cd l-1) for up to 111 d in 1982. C. gigas accumulated cadmium twice as fast as O. edulis (1.07 vs 0.52 μg Cd g-1 wet wt d-1). Furthermore, O. edulis from an uncontaminated environment accumulated cadmium faster than O. edulis from a metal-contaminated environment (0.52 vs 0.34 μg Cd g-1 wet wt d-1). There was no effect of cadmium exposure on total soft-tissue copper and zinc concentrations. Investigation of cytosolic metal-binding using Sephadex G-75 gel-permeation chromatography indicated that binding to very low molecular weight ligands (MW<1000) accounted for>70% of the cytosolic zinc in all oysters and>40% of the cytosolic cadmium in all oysters except O. edulis from Conwy at 83 d. In copper-contaminated oysters, excess copper was also associated with very low molecular weight ligands. Intermediate molecular weight cadmium/copper-binding proteins (similar to metallothionein in molecular weight) were observed in the cytosol and were shown to differ between species in terms of their behavior on Sephadex G-75. Finally, the distribution of accumulated cytosolic cadmium in O. edulis from the contaminated environment was shown to have a unique distribution, i.e., there was no cadmium associated with high molecular weight cytosolic macromolecules. The data indicate that both genetic and environmental factors influence cadmium accumulation in oysters.  相似文献

InMytilus edulis L., gametogenesis takes place in the mantle at the expense of the connective storage tissue. There are two main types of storage cells: vesicular (VC) cells storing large amounts of glycogen and adipogranular (ADG) cells containing large numbers of protein granules, lipid droplets and lesser amounts of glycogen. One of the ways in which stored reserves can be mobilized for gamete formation is by controlled autophagy, in which the cellular constituents are degraded by lysosomes. Mussels were collected from the Menai Strait, North Wales, and monthly measurements made, over two years (1984–1986), of the activities of lysosomal acid hydrolases (acid phosphatase,-N-acetyl-D-glucosaminidase and-glucuronidase) and Cathepsins B and L in the mantle tissue, isolated ADG cells, low-density cells and, during spawning, in the mature oocytes of female mussels. The lysosomal proteinases, Cathepsins B, L and H, were further characterised by activation with thiol compounds and inhibition with thiol blockers and by leupeptin. Because of the low activity in the mantle tissue ofM. edulis, Cathepsin H was not assayed on a seasonal basis. There was a general increase in lysosomal enzyme activity during the winter, which can be related to increased autolysis in the storage cells and to the process of maturation in the developing oocytes. The activity of Cathepsin B was highest in the ADG and low-density cells, implying an important role in proteolysis within the ADG cells. By contrast, Cathepsin L displayed the highest activity in the mature oocytes, suggesting a major function of Cathepsin L in the development and maturation of the oocytes. Two different-glucosidase activities were measured in the monthly assays, one with a pH optimum of 4.5 (acid) and the other at pH 7.5 (neutral). Highest activities of the acid-glycosidase were found in the low-density cells, but there were no significant seasonal changes in the mantle tissue as a whole. Activities of the neutral-glucosidase were low in the ADG cells and mature oocytes, but showed high activities in the mantle tissue, with marked seasonal changes that corresponded to the mobilization of glycogen reserves in the VC cells.  相似文献

Photomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the fine structure of the latero-frontal cirri on the gills of three species of bivalve mollusc: Mytilus edulis Linn., Barnea candida (Linn.), and Petricola pholadiformis Lam. The component cilia are seen to branch off alternately along the length of each cirrus. Each of these free, lateral lengths of the cilia are separated from the next on their side by a mean distance of 0.6 m. They extend to a mean length of 2.7 m in M. edulis, the species described in detail. It is shown that a complete straining mesh can be formed over the gill ostium during normal filtering and the aperture of this mesh correlates well with the previously recorded filtering efficiency for Mytilus.  相似文献

Since Mytilus edulis L. has very few predators and competitors for space, it has become a biomass dominant in the Baltic proper covering hard substrates from the water surface to more than 30 m depth. In order to investigate the factors controlling size and production in a Baltic M. edulis population, growth was studied by the analysis of annual growth rings, measurements of caged individuals and the analysis of size classes in the population, and on settlement ropes. The total number of mussels in a representative mussel bed at 4 m depth varied between 36 000 and 158 000 ind · m-2 during the year, mainly due to variations in very small mussels (<2 mm), whereas the abundance of mussels 2mm was rather constant between about 17 000 and 28 000 ind · m-2. Maximum numbes of mussels < 2 mm, amounting to 132 000 ind · m-2, were found after settlement in summer, but still half a year later in spring, 65 000 ind · m-2 < 2 mm were registered, due to very strong intraspecific competition for food and space leading to the competitive suppression of small individuals and large variations in growth rates. Due to the special size-structure of the population only the analysis of annual growth rings could be used to estimate natural shell growth. From being very low in the smallest mussels, growth was linear between about 2–10 yr of age, corresponding to about 3–20 mm length, after which it decreased with a L=32 mm. Over the linear interval, growth in the populations from 3–6 m and 10–15m depth was 3.1 and 2.2 mm · yr-1, respectively. Meat growth showed strong annual variations mainly due to gonad production. Starving mussels could, however, while utilizing energy reserves, survive losses of up to 78% of their meat biomass. This ability of M. edulis to respire away its own biomass and its apparent tolerance of weight loss has important implication. It will drastically reduce the energy flow to destruents from mussels dying naturally, which is of special significance in the Baltic, where predators and scavengers are scarce. It enables the mussels to endure bad food conditions and buffer strong seasonal variations in food abundance, maintaining the strongly food-and space-limited Baltic M. edulis population at the carrying capacity of the area.  相似文献

Predators such as crabs, whelks, and sea stars attack their bivalve prey in different ways, and predator-induced defenses are an important means of protection. The degree to which induced defenses are specific to different predators, however, remains largely unknown. In laboratory experiments (June to August 1998), we raised mussels (Mytilus edulis L.) in the presence of a drilling predator [the whelk Nucella lapillus (L.)] or a crushing predator [the crab Carcinus maenas (L.)] to determine whether induced changes in prey shell thickness, size, or shape occurred and whether changes were predator-specific. Over a 2 month period, juvenile mussels were exposed to waterborne cues from actively feeding crabs or whelks. Mussels produced thicker shell lips in response to both predators relative to control mussels raised in their absence, and the difference was significantly greater in response to whelks than to crabs. Mussels exposed to whelks showed significantly smaller increases in shell length and width and total wet weight than did mussels exposed to crabs. Thus, there may be a trade-off between shell thickness and linear shell growth and a potential delay in attaining a size refuge from predation. A prey-localization test allowed the observation of the foraging behaviour of Coscinasterias muricata in the presence of Mytilus edulis and the disruption of this behaviour following oil exposure. Asteroids were exposed to dilutions of water-accommodated fractions (WAF) of Bass Strait stabilised crude oil (control, 2%, 10%). Effects of exposure (4 d) and depuration (20 d) were quantified using circular statistical analyses. Observations suggested that disruption of behaviour might be concentration-dependent. Control asteroids successfully located mussels during tests. A small proportion (3 of 16) of asteroids exposed to 2% WAF also located the mussels, while asteroids exposed to 10% WAF did not. Following depuration, exposed asteroids recovered their chemoreception capacities. It is concluded that (1) Coscinasterias muricata is able to locate prey mussels through chemoreception, (2) exposure to oil disrupts its foraging behaviour, and (3) the effect is reversible. In 1984, 115 samples of the starfish Asterias rubens L. collected in the south-eastern part of Cadet Trench (Mecklenburg Bay/Western Baltic Sea) were analyzed for their contents of a few major (calcium, magnesium) and trace elements (cadmium, copper, iron, mercury, manganese, nickel, lead, selenium and zinc). Distinct differences were found between starfish from different stations, and these are attributed to the composition of the sediments acting as a substrate for their prey (mussels, snails). Except for cadmium, the concentrations of the elements studied all correlated negatively with the diameter and weight of the starfish.

Parallel analyses of starfish arms and the central discs of the same animals showed that iron, zinc, copper and mercury levels were 16 to 30% higher, and selenium, manganese, magnesium, calcium and lead were 4 to 9% higher in the arms. Cadmium concentrations were 20% higher in the central discs than in the arms.

Stock estimations (about 52,000 tons fresh weight) show that starfish play a significant role in the benthic ecosystem of the western Baltic Sea. They can consume up to 200,000 tons of mussels and clams (Mytilus edulis, Macoma baltica) a year and may therefore represent a notable factor in the trace metal balance of the region.  相似文献

When feeding on blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus) either stab into the mollusc’s gaping valves or hammer through its dorsal or ventral shell. Whilst the selectivity of hammering and stabbing oystercatchers for specific prey morphologies has been well studied, the way in which the effects of environment on M. edulis morphology can in turn affect feeding methods of H. ostralegus is very poorly understood. Based on morphological analyses on randomly selected shells from three intertidal zones, this study failed to detect differences in morphology or distribution of dorsally and ventrally hammered shells but confirms the finding of previous authors that hammering oystercatchers select thinner mussels than stabbing birds. Additionally, we show that this difference in optimal prey morphology can lead to spatial patterns in oystercatcher feeding behaviour. Whilst at the low intertidal and higher mid intertidal zones, characterised by comparatively thick shells, most empty shells had apparently been stabbed, hammering was the dominant feeding behaviour at the lower mid intertidal zone, where shells were thinner. Preference of hammering birds for smaller mussels was not ubiquitous. Sagittal shell shape was predominantly influenced by allometric growth effects and had only minor effect on prey selection. All oystercatchers preferred less inflated mussels, with the degree of shell inflation gradually increasing with higher intertidal elevation. Our results illustrate the importance of small-scale patterns in prey ecophenotypes in determining the distribution and feeding dynamics of wading birds.  相似文献

Electrophoretic analysis of loci controlling a variety of enzymes has been applied to samples of the Padstow mussel and typical Mytilus edulis L. living strictly sympatrically at Rock, Cornwall, England, in order to resolve the disputed status of the Padstow mussel. Small samples indicated similar monomorphic states at the GPDH, TO, MDH-2 loci and weak polymorphism at the 6 PGD locus in both types of mussel. The MDH-1 locus may be weakly polymorphic in the Padstow mussel and monomorphic in M. edulis. Large samples assayed for AP, LAP, PGM, and PHI produced data showing very large and highly significant differences in allele frequencies at three of these loci between the two groups of mussels separated on anatomical characters. At the LAP locus, significant deficiencies of heterozygotes were observed in both groups of mussels. A small percentage of mussels from Rock are difficult to assign with certainty to one or other group on anatomical and morphological criteria, but the genetic evidence indicates that most, if not all, such specimens are M. edulis. These genetic differences make it highly improbable that any significant degree of genetic exchange occurs between the two groups in nature and, taken together with the evidence of genetic resemblance of the Padstow mussel to M. galloprovincialis from Venice and that of Rock M. edulis to M. edulis, from the Gower peninsula of Wales we conclude that the Padstow mussel is indeed M. galloprovincialis.  相似文献

Blue mussels, Mytilus spp., have inhabited the brackish Baltic Sea, an environment lacking predatory crabs and starfish, for several thousand years. In this paper we examined whether Baltic Mytilus that were transplanted to the North Sea showed predator-inducible plasticity like their "marine" conspecifics. Our experiments showed that native North Sea Mytilus changed their morphology when exposed to waterborne scents from shore-crabs and starfish. These predators induced different kinds of changes, with emphasis on shell thickness and adductor muscle size, respectively. Baltic Mytilus responded in a similar way to crab scents, whereas starfish scents had a relatively weak effect on the morphology. Crab and starfish scent induced strengthening of the byssal attachment in North Sea Mytilus, with crabs providing more stimulation than starfish. Baltic mussels also improved the byssal attachment when exposed to either of the predators, but the attachment strength, as well as the response to crabs, were relatively weaker than that of North Sea mussels. We conclude that inducible plasticity still is present in Baltic Mytilus, despite their recent evolution in a predator-free environment. There is probably no strong selective pressure against inducible plasticity, but it could also be maintained in the population by gene flow from Mytilus in the adjoining North Sea. The question whether Baltic Mytilus are M. edulis or M. trossulus may also be relevant for the present results.  相似文献

Hitherto published evidence of the presence or absence of endogenous activity rhythms in bivalve molluscs is equivocal. Mytilus edulis L. were collected from a North Wales (UK) estuary in 1985, and shell-gaping was investigated in individual mussels under constant conditions in the laboratory. Results suggest that there is no endogenous circatidal rhythm of shell-gaping in this species, This is consistent with the view that, unlike mobile species, sessile intertidal species are much more likely to exhibit exogenous rather than endogenous responses to tidal fluctuations. There is some evidence of weak circadian rhythmicity of shell-gaping in M. edulis, with greater duration of shell-closure during hours of expected daylight. Such behaviour could represent an adaptational defence against visually-feeding predators.  相似文献

Specimens of Pisaster ochraceus, an intertidal carnivorous seastar, were collected in northern Puget Sound at Post Point, near Bellingham, Washington, USA, in November 1993, and used in experimentation through September 1994. Ammonium sulfate fractions (60% precipitates) from excised pyloric caeca (digestive glands) possessed -glucanase activity directed toward such -linked substrates as carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), partially-digested cellulose (cellodextrins) and the synthetic substrate p-nitrophenyl--D-glucoside (PNDG). pH-activity and pH-stability maxima were at pH 6 and 5, respectively. No hydrolytic activity was detectable on native cellulose, native chitin or on cationic-modified celluloses such as DEAE-cellulose. Gel filtration (Sephadex G-100) of this 60% precipitate followed by DEAE-Sephadex column chromatography revealed heterogeneity of -glucanase activity, with an indication of up to 11 distinct fractions with variable activity directed toward the substrates indicated above (CMC, cellodextrins and PNDG). These fractions displayed differing ratios of hydrolytic activity on these substrates. None of the isolated fractions displayed activity toward either native cellulose or native chitin. Gut extracts from the edible mussel (Mytilus edulis), a common prey species of P. ochraceus, were shown to possess partially digested cellulose (cellodextrins). These cellodextrins were further degraded by seastar -glucanases in vitro. The digestion of the gut contents of ingested prey provides a possible adaptive explanation for the presence of -glucanase activity in a carnivore.  相似文献

The mussel species Mytilus edulis L. and M. trossulus Gould coexist and hybridize throughout a large area that includes the north coast of Maine and Atlantic Canada. Previous studies provided genetic evidence for limited hybridization between the two species for mussels >15 mm. The present study used two genetic markers (ITS, Glu-5) to examine the genetic composition of early life-history stages by sampling veliger and pediveliger larvae, juveniles (<2.0 to 15.0 mm shell length) and adults (>15 mm shell length) in Trinity Bay, Newfoundland, during three consecutive years (1995–1997) to determine if differential mortality limits the relative abundance of hybrids. The relative frequency of the two species and the different hybrid genotypes was similar among the larvae, juveniles and small adult mussels. The double hybrid genotype (F1-like) was the rarest genotype observed. There was no evidence for differential mortality during the early life-history stages, and factors limiting production of hybrids appear to operate before the late larval stage. The observed frequency of hybrids is probably due to a combination of pre- and postzygotic reproductive isolating mechanisms operating early in the mussels life history. M. trossulus dominated the early life-history stages, possibly due to a higher population density and a greater reproductive output than M. edulis. Differential mortality may explain the observed decrease in frequency of M. trossulus and increase in frequency of M. edulis with increasing shell length. A similar frequency of hybrid mussels from larvae to the size class of 55 mm shell length may indicate a rate of mortality intermediate between the two parental species. The M. edulis–M. trossulus hybrid zone appears to be maintained by reproductive isolating mechanisms limiting the production of hybrids and life-history differences that allow the two species to coexist.Communicated by J.P. Trace metal concentrations (Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu) were studied in two different bivalve species of the same age, the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, Lmk., and the oyster Ostrea edulis, Linnaeus, which had been grown in the water of Lim Fjord, North West Yugoslavia (Peninsula Istria), i.e. under the same physicochemical conditions. The study offers a realistic view on the metal accumulation ability of oysters and mussels. The distribution of trace metals over the different organs and the edible parts of the mussels and oysters, collected in June 1979, was determined and is discussed in detail. The results are supported by the determination of the trace metal levels in the dissolved state and in the suspended material in the ambient sea water of the bivalves. Concentration factors for zinc, cadmium, lead and copper in the mussels of: 95 000, 9 100, 1 500 and 4 000; and in the oysters of: 95 500, 30 400, 3 400 and 64 500 were found, respectively. The values were evaluated comparing the metal concentration in the bivalve soft part and the dissolved trace metal levels in the adjacent water.  相似文献

Pumping rates in Mytilus edulis L. were measured by means of a constant-level-tank method, in which hydrostatic pressure differences between inhalant and exhalant water levels were recorded by means of a laser beam reflected from a tethered mirror floating on the water surface. Hydrostatic pressure gradients were determined to ±0.05 mm H2O or better. The developed technique of directly measuring pumping rates in mussels is not subject to the artefacts of other methods. The pumping rates measured in M. edulis were substantially higher than those previously determined by means of direct techniques, but similar to the maximum filtration rates, as obtained by means of two indirect techniques, i.e. about 50 ml min-1 for a 0.15 g dry weight mussel. Positive hydrostatic pressures drastically affected water pumping. The pumping rate decreased linearly with increasing hydrostatic pressures towards a maximum pump pressure between 3 and 5 mm H2O. Negative pressures only affected the pumping rate slightly or insignificantly, except when the mussels were exposed to rapidly increasing negative pressures.
