Summary In the digger wasp Philanthus bicinctus the first adult males emerge about a week before the first females. The sex ratio of emerging wasps is near unity. Females appear to mate once and do so when they first start to nest, not when they first emerge.Males defend mating territories in a large area of female ground nests. Territoriality begins when females first start to nest and throughout the season coincides with the digging activities of females initiating rests. During the day territoriality occurs only when females are engaged in digging activities.Males compete for certain territory sites within the resting area; the most frequently occupied male territories are in areas where the density of nests is highest. About half of the males are excluded from nesting area territories. Some of these males defend areas among the flowers of snakeweed where females occasionally forage; this appears to be a loser tactic of males unable to obtain nesting area territories.Although there was no significant difference in the sizes of males on nesting area and snakeweed territories, within the nesting area larger males usually occupy territories with the higher nest densities.  相似文献

Summary The reproductive behaviour of marine iguanas (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) was studied to answer the following questions: Which physical factors determine the number of females found on a male's territory? Do males select territories according to preferences for physical conditions or according to the number of females there? What causes the strong correlation between the number of females on a territory and the number of copulations achieved there? Females preferred as their resting places territories with the following characteristics, in order of importance: High number of shady/shelter places, low temperature of rocks at noon, proximity to the sea, sun-basking places in the afternoon. Other factors measured (probability of being wetted by spray, sun-basking places in the morning and at noon) showed no significant correlation with the number of females. Males, however, preferred territories further from the sea (within about 7 m), with high rock temperatures and a high number of basking places in the morning (in order of importance). Males primarily followed their site preferences and not female density in their choice of a territory. The site choice of females determined the number of copulations achieved on a territory, as females copulated preferentially on their resting places. A shift of females from one territory to another within one colony between two succeeding years was correlated with the change in relative weight of territory owners. This result was interpreted as an indication of female choice. Site preferences of males and females are discussed in relation to the animals' physiological requirements. Possible influences of ecological factors on the evolution of this mating system are considered.  相似文献

Summary Males of the water strider Gerris elongatus established territories which included copulation and oviposition sites (small pieces of fallen bamboo). Males were aggressive and competition for territory and females was observed frequently. Male midlegs were more developed than female midlegs and were used as weapons. Reproductive behaviour changed as the breeding season advanced. Early in the season immature females were attracted by male surface wave courtship signals, then copulated white floating on the water surface without ovipositing (type 1). In midseason, males established territories, produced calling signals and attracted females which copulated and oviposited there with male postcopulatory guarding (type 2). In late season, many females oviposited without postcopulatory guarding on pondweed mats near fallen bamboo. Non-territorial males waiter for the arrival of these females and copulated without courtship, but mating success was low (type 3). These alternative mating strategies appeared to depend on differences in male size. Larger males were superior to smaller males in many ways (establishing territory, fighting, mating etc.). The largest males defended territories and had higher mating success than small non-territorial males. Medium sized males used all three strategies according to the number of empty territories and seasonal femald distribution.  相似文献

Mate sampling behaviour of black grouse females (Tetrao tetrix)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We studied female mate sampling behaviour in lekking black grouse (Tetrao tetrix). Females mainly visited males occupying territories in the centre of the lek with relatively large territories. They were also more likely to visit males that had high attendance. The same factors were also correlated with male mating success. A multiple regression model including these factors explained more of the variance in female visits per male (53%) than in mating success (33%). The pattern of female sampling conformed with a pool comparison (best-of-n) tactic. Such a tactic is expected if the costs of sampling are low. Females of high body mass visited more males than lighter females, however, which indicates that females may vary in their search tactics and suggests that there may be search costs. The existence of costs is further suggested by the fact that if the mate from a previous year was still present, females always mated with the same male in the following year. Though search costs were not measured directly, our findings suggest that some costs are negligible (e.g. energetic exhaustion or predation) whereas others (timing of mating) may be more important.  相似文献

Competition for a mate restricts mate search of female pied flycatchers   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Summary We studied the mate sampling behaviour of female pied flycatchers, Ficedula hypoleuca, in a 40-ha area containing 10–12 unmated males whose nestboxes were monitored with videocameras. The main results were: (1) The females undertook a restricted mate search. The females that mated in the area during three monitoring periods (n = 20, 12 females released by us and 8 females that arrived naturally) sampled 1–10 males (median 4.5). This was about 40% of the available mating options. (2) Search costs in terms of time and energy were low. The search period was short (median 5.1 h) and only a small proportion of the search period was spent at the nestboxes of males (median 4%). The females visited up to seven different males in 1 h, and the time elapsing between visits to different males was short (median 13 min). The minimum distance travelled during the search was also short (median 1.4 km). (3) There was competition between the females. We recorded seven cases of two females visiting the same male at the same time, including at least one case involving physical fighting. (4) Females that experienced a high level of competition had a more restricted mate search than females that experienced a low level of competition. (5) The search pattern of most of the females did not conform to the best-of-n-males rule nor to the threshold criterion rule, because they made repeated visits to many of the males sampled.  相似文献

The distribution of ecological resources and their significance for males and females may vary considerably. Intersexual behavioural interactions may lead, combined with particular resource configurations, to sexual spatial segregation. We investigated this issue relative to host plant use in females of the purple-edged copper butterfly, Lycaena hippothoe. Males exhibited nectar resource-based territoriality, which is an uncommon mate-locating system in butterflies. They perched and patrolled in large territories harassing every passing female. In our study system, the percentage of spatial dimension shared for adult and larval resources was estimated at 50%, and males monopolised 28% of the nectar-rich zones. Under these conditions of harassment, females travelled between nectar-rich zones for feeding and zones with suitable host plants for egg laying, but often without nectar and hence with low male density. This is likely to limit their time budget and, potentially, their realised fecundity as suggested by the low number of eggs found relative to population size. Females were also highly specialised in selecting host plants under particular environmental conditions. Using test choice in experimental cages, we showed that, in the absence of males, only micro-climatic conditions may significantly influencing egg-laying decisions. Moreover, results of egg-rearing experiments under different temperature treatments suggested that eggs were laid in thermally suitable micro-environments. The highly selective egg-laying behaviour can be viewed as a preference-performance choice. Knowledge of individuals' behaviour, including sexual interactions, can be highly significant for our understanding of habitat use, which in turn can be essential for conservation. We discuss this for L. hippothoe, a species of regional conservation concern.  相似文献

Summary Manipulations of population density, availability of oviposition substrate, and size of breeding habitat affected the proportion of pupfish (Cyprinodon pecosensis) males adopting territorial and satellite breeding tactics. Satellites occupied stations above breeding substrates defended by territorial males. Both territorial and satellite males developed a bright blue breeding coloration. A third breeding tactic, sneak-spawning, was occasionally observed. Sneak-spawning males retained the cryptic female coloration and occasionally spawned on territories. The lower reproductive success of satellites and sneak-spawning males suggested that both are conditional breeding tactics adopted by competitively inferior males. Satellites were present in all treatments that favored a territorial breeding system, but were absent when the breeding system was a dominance hierarchy. Satellites were associated with territorial males that had higher reproductive success and larger territories than males without satellites. Satellites functioned as parasites rather than as mutualists, since they disrupted spawnings and stole copulations from territorial males. The occurrence and frequency of the conditional breeding behaviours in pupfish represent facultative responses of males to changes in the intensity of competition for breeding sites and females.  相似文献

Summary Males of the wool-carder bee, Anthidium manicatum, patrol clumps of garden plants. Females of this species visit these plants for pollen, nectar, and pubescence; they also mate there. Females are polyandrous, with intervals between copulations as short as 35 s. Patrolling males defend their territories (0.1–1.3 m2) against other males and against other species of flower-visiting insects. Honey bees may be rendered unable to fly by the attacks of A. manicatum.Territory owners perform exploratory flights to other males' territories, changing territories often (median ownership 4–7 days; maximum 30 days) and flying up to 450 m to establish new territories. Territorial usurpations are nearly always by larger males.Female visitation rate is significantly correlated with number of flowers on a territory. The head size of territory-owner males shows significant correlation with territorial quality (measured by number of flowers, not area) and thus with number of female visits and copulatory opportunities. Some males fail to maintain territories and instead attempt to forage and copulate in other males' territories while the owners are otherwise occupied. Nonowner males are significantly smaller than owners, forage less often and from fewer flowers, and achieve significantly fewer copulations than owners. Females, however, do not reject smaller, nonowner males at a higher rate than they do larger, owner males; their choice for male size appears to be indirect, based instead on choice of food resource.The interval between a copulation and the male's next attempt with a different female is not shorter than that involving the same female. Males do not escort just-mated females about their teritories, as observed in Anthidium maculosum. Territorial behavior in this species most likely evolved through intrasexual competition for reproductive success which led to sexual dimorphism. The defense of a resourcebased territory is the mechanism used by a male to maximize his reproductive potential.  相似文献

The small cichlid fish Neolamprologus multifasciatus is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and is unique among fish because it lives in complex social groups with several reproductive males and females, all of which participate in defending their territory against neighbors and intruders. Individuals use empty snail shells for breeding and shelter. Previous parentage analysis using microsatellites suggested occasional exchange of individuals between groups. In field experiments, we found that females showed a higher tendency than males to migrate into territories already occupied by a resident pair. The phenomenon and causes of female-biased immigration were further investigated in aquarium experiments: Nine of 15 females, but only 2 of 15 equally sized males, settled in territories of established pairs. Territorial males exhibited more aggression toward strange males (potential reproductive competitors) than toward strange females (potential additional mates); their females were more aggressive toward strange females (probably competitors for shells) than toward strange males. Apparently, a conflict exists between the sexes regarding the immigration of additional females. This conflict seems to be the selective basis for observed active male interference in aggressive disputes between females in the territory. Summary Males of the desert grasshopper Ligurotettix coquilletti typically eclose 3–5 weeks prior to females. Early-eclosed males experience more female encounters than the later-eclosed individuals. Evidence suggests that the number of encounters may be proportional to male lifetime mating success. Early-eclosed males enjoyed greater adult lifespans, occupied and defended higher quality territories (Larrea shrubs), and tended to be dominant on these shrubs if several males were present. The elevated number of female encounters were not conferred on early-eclosed males by their extended survivorship, but rather by the high quality of their territories, which retained numerous females, and their dominant behavior. We evaluate several female-benefit and male-benefit hypotheses for the evolution of protandry and propose that in L. coquilletti, the phenomenon arose due to male-male competition for female-encounter sites, a mechanism not considered in earlier models. Finally, we discuss several reasons for the high variance in the date of male eclosion.  相似文献

Summary This study compares time budgets of males and females of two sympatric species of bee flies, Lordotus pulchrissimus and L. miscellus. These species occur synchronously in sand dune habitat on the north shore of Mono Lake, Mono Co., California, and feed almost exclusively on the flowers of a composite shrub, Chrysothamnus nauseosus. The two closely related species, with similar ecological requirements and in an identical environment, allocate time and energy in very different ways, even when accomplishing the same ecological goals. L. pulchrissimus males and females engage respectively in aggressive interactions and feeding primarily in the morning. In contrast, L. miscellus males and females intersperse brief periods of resting with flying when defending territories and feeding, and they keep up these activities until later in the day. Similarly within species, males are involved in aggressive interactions for a shorter period each day, and females feed over a longer period. Flies in all sex-species classes but male pulchrissimus allocate their time energetically in similar ways. Male pulchrissimus spend more time each day in energetically costly activities; they engage in continuous hovering flight and intense interactions in aerial aggregations. While male miscellus feed little, male pulchrissimus spend a large portion of their time feeding, approximately as much as females, contrary to the expectation that males should be foraging-time minimizers. This study corroborates the conclusions of previous studies on bee-fly communities by showing that nectar and pollen are important resources for adult bee flies, at least for some species: Individuals of these two species spend a large proportion of their adult lifetimes feeding.  相似文献

Summary The territorial and mating systems of the satyrid butterfly Oeneis chryxus were studied for 3 years on individually marked populations in algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario. Males defended territories in a dry open forest clearing by means of chases and spiral flights with conspecifies. Defended areas did not contain food or oviposition sites required by females. Territories were not uniformly distributed over the study area; the highest density of territories was clustered over bare ground covered with sand and small stones rather than areas of vegetation. This pattern of distribution of territories occurred during each year of the study. The patterns of occupancy of territories showed a high degree of consistency from one day to the next, some males defending a given territory for as many as 11 consecutive days. Removal experiments showed that a surplus of non-territorial males did not exist. Vacant territories in the high-density area were absorbed by neighboring males; those in the low-density area remained empty. Male size was not correlated with territory position in the study are. Wing patterning (i.e. size of spots) differed between males occupying territories on sandy/stony versus vegetated areas. The territorial and mating systems of O. chryxus resemble lek polygyny, and are more similar to some vertebrate lek systems than to hilltopping or landmark territoriality.  相似文献

Mimicry of females enables weaker males in many species to avoid intrasexual aggression. In fiddler crabs (Uca annulipes), males use their major claw in aggressive interactions to acquire and defend a territory. Males that have autotomised their major claw will be disadvantaged in fighting, but might use their temporary resemblance to females to avoid costly aggressive encounters with other males. We investigated whether: (1) courting males mistake clawless male fiddler crabs for females; (2) clawless males are able to acquire, defend and retain territories as successfully as intact males; and (3) clawless males are more cautious than intact males. Clawless and intact males differed in burrow acquisition methods and fighting behaviour, but were equally successful at acquiring and retaining burrows. While courting males treated clawless males as female, we found no evidence that clawless males mimic the behaviour of females, or that they exploit the advantage of their mistaken identity. Clawless males further appear to avoid male aggression by altering their territorial strategies to minimise the potential for conflict.  相似文献

Behavioral observations were made during SCUBA excursions out of the PRINUL underwater laboratory, off the west coast of Puerto Rico. Most of the work involved four species of parrotfishes, Sparisoma viride, Sparisoma aurofrenatum, Scarus croicensis and Scarus taeniopterus. The species of Sparisoma are relatively patrilocal, solitary, slowly and steadily feeding fishes; the terminal phase (termphase) males of S. aurofrenatum hold large territories that encompass the home ranges, possibly territories, of a number of females. The two species of Scarus are roving, aggregating fish that periodically descend to the bottom where they feed rapidly. Reproductive males are of two types, either highly dimorphic, brilliantly colored termphase males, or midphase males that resemble the females. At times, termphase males become territorial and are visited by females and midphase males. Females spawn with termphase and with midphase males. Aggression in all four species was directed largely to conspecific individuals. All species show the ability to change color rapidly, sometimes dramatically, in social interactions.  相似文献

Summary Previous field work on the grasshopper Ligurotettix coquilletti revealed that females were not evenly distributed among male mating territories, Larrea tridentata (creosote) bushes, but were clustered at particular locations. These sites generally harbored several signaling males simultaneously and also possessed foliage preferred by the insects as a food source, this preference being based on the relative concentrations of various extra-foliar compounds. The clustering of females, therefore, could result from a preference for specific bushes because of the resources (i.e., food) available there and/or an orientation to groups of males per se. Here, we present the results of 3 field experiments in which we controlled the spatial distribution and intensity of male signals using a computer-operated system of loudspeakers and monitored the movement of individually marked females released in the study area. When male song was identical at high and low quality territories (all having single loudspeakers), females still aggregated at the high quality sites, indicating that variability in host plant quality alone may be sufficient to promote a skewed distribution of females. Among high quality territories, females did not discriminate between sites with one versus three loudspeakers (all broadcasting the same signal), but displayed a strong preference for sites (all having single loudspeakers) with a high intensity signal over a low intensity one. Field measurements showed that the songs of grouped males were more intense than those of lone males, implying that the signaling of grouped males may have enhanced the settlement of females at the bushes harboring male groups above and beyond that influenced by territory quality alone. We conclude that female attraction to host plants is influenced primarily by male signaling, whereas their subsequent retention is more dependent on territory quality. An experiment on male settlement failed to show an aggregative tendency, suggesting that male groups form through the passive accumulation of individuals at high quality sites.  相似文献

Summary Habits, home range, and social behavior of three species of voles of the genus Pitymys, P. multiplex, P. subterraneus, and P. savii, were studied in Tessin (Switzerland) by radioactive tagging. P. multiplex and P. savii are fossorial and often use the burrow systems of moles (Talpa); P. subterraneus moves around on the surface under dense vegetation. Males and females of P. multiplex were territorial and their home ranges averaged 342 and 229 m2 respectively. The mating system appeared to be monogamous. P. savii male and female home ranges averaged 445 and 298 m2 respectively. Groups of up to one to three adult females, one or more adult males, and several young, occupied exclusive communal territories. The mating system appeared to be flexible, including monogamy, polygyny, and polyandry. P. subterraneus females occupied exclusive territories (mean 256 m2) overlapped by the home ranges of one or more males (1025 m2). The mating system appeared to be promiscuous. Individuals of the three species occupied one to seven nests. In P. savii all family members utilized three or more communal nests at the same time or alternatively. Co-nesting between males and females of P. multiplex or P. subterraneus were observed less frequently.  相似文献

Male-male competition is assumed to limit female choice of mates, but it may also help females to choose the most vigorous males. We studied the mate sampling behaviour of female black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) at spatially unstable leks on ice-covered lakes. In the absence of territories and site-dependence in outcomes of fights, the male dominance hierarchy is very evident on ice. When being courted by dominant males, females frequently tried to approach other males. This was frequently prevented because (1) the courting male and the approached male were involved in physical fight, or (2) the dominant male followed the female and the approached male escaped and avoided contact with him. These behaviours express dominance relationships, and the female behaviour could be considered as incitive. Rank in dominance hierarchy was a significant predictor of male mating success. In this case competition between males and female choice worked in parallel favouring male traits correlated with dominance.  相似文献

Males of some territorial calopterygid damselflies show an elaborate courtship display that involves high-frequency wing-beats directed toward an incoming female. Although it has been suggested that female mate preference is based on some characteristics of male’s courtship display, it is unclear whether the courtship display varies between males or is influenced by environmental conditions. We combined two recent technologies, thermographic imaging and high-speed digital videography, to show that the wing-beat frequency during courtship (i.e., courtship intensity) in a damselfly, Mnais costalis, is correlated with thorax temperature. Our data indicated that (1) male thorax temperature was associated with solar exposure in his territory, (2) environmentally derived thermal gain enhanced courtship intensity, (3) hotter males were more likely to copulate than others, and (4) female thorax temperature during oviposition within a territory was associated with solar exposure. Males with territories that have longer exposure to sun spots are expected to attain higher thorax temperatures for longer and so are able to successfully court more females. We suggest that females benefit from mating with hot males because they will be on a warmer territory while ovipositing. Hot males might also have greater mate guarding ability, and/or eggs may develop faster in warmer territories.  相似文献

We studied movement and site fidelity of males and females of the territorial frog Allobates femoralis (Aromobatidae) in a population in the Nature Reserve “Les Nouragues” in French Guiana, South America. Observations during 3 months in 2006 ascertained intra-seasonal site fidelity for males and females. Males actively defend large multi-purpose territories whereas females retreat to small resting sites from where they commute to neighbouring males for courtship and mating. Female short-term movement corroborates the previous assumption of a polygynous or promiscuous resource-defence mating system. Year-to-year recaptures from 2005 until 2008 revealed distinct patterns of inter-annual movement for males and regional site fidelity for females. Males abandon their territories and have to re-negotiate them when reproduction starts again at the end of the dry season. Females are not subject to intra- or inter-sexual territorial competition and as a result move significantly less between reproductive seasons than males. Male long-term movement reflects spatial structure and prevailing social interactions and is a reliable indicator for tadpole deposition sites. The combined effects of intra- and inter-seasonal movement promote the diversity of mates for both sexes.  相似文献

Previous studies have suggested that testosterone (T) profiles of male birds reflect a trade-off between mate attraction behaviours (requiring high T levels) and parental care activities (requiring low T levels). In this study, we experimentally elevated T levels of monogamous males in the facultatively polygynous European starling (Sturnus vulgaris), and compared mate attraction and paternal behaviour of T-treated males with those of controls (C-males). T-males significantly reduced their participation in incubation and fed nestlings significantly less often than C-males. Females paired to T-treated males did not compensate for their mate’s lower paternal effort. The observed reduction in a male’s investment in incubating the eggs was accompanied by an increased investment in typical female-attracting behaviours: T-males spent a significantly higher proportion of their time singing to attract additional females. They also occupied more additional nestboxes than C-males, although the differences just failed to be significant, and carried significantly more green nesting materials into an additional nestbox (a behaviour previously shown to serve a courtship function). T-males also behaved significantly more aggressively than C-males. During the nestling period, the frequency of mate-attracting behaviours by T-treated and control males no longer differed significantly. Despite the reduced paternal effort by T-males and the lack of compensation behaviour by females, hatching and breeding success did not differ significantly between T- and C-pairs.
