In the benthic octopus Octopus cyanea Gray, acclimated to high temperature (30°C), digestion takes 12 h. Animal weight and food intake do not influence the duration of digestion. By regulating the rate of food passage in the alimentary canal, the quantity of digested food (as a percentage of ingested food) is kept constant at a particular time. A comparison with other cephalopod species and with different fish species, leads to the conclusion that the mode of life is the main factor determining the duration of digestion and its efficiency. For a given species, the duration of digestion depends on temperature. For a similar mode of life and at equal temperatures, digestion is more rapid and more efficient in cephalopods than in fishes.  相似文献

Reproductive effort in terms of fecundity and energy allocation was studied in Ophryotrocha labronica La Greca and Bacci, 1962 a small, semicontinuous iteroparous species. In O. labronica fecundity is more or less constant throughout life, and the total fecundity of the 64 couples examined in this experiment only declined by 12% from the first to the last spawning. No linear relationship was found between fecundity and body size.␣The energy content of germinal and somatic tissues was determined by differential scanning calorimeter. The␣reproductive effort and a reproductive index based on the fifth spawning were evaluated to compare the␣patterns of energy allocation of a semicontinuous iteroparous species with semelparous and annual iteroparous species. The reproductive index ranged from 0.20 to 0.77, with an average of 0.480. The average reproductive effort was 0.840, ranging from 0.60 to 0.96. These figures highlight the enormous amount of energy that O. labronica allocates to reproductive tissues. Received: 23 July 1997 / Accepted: 20 October 1998  相似文献

A reproductive strategy consisting of deep- water spawning and egg-care was inferred for the midwater squid Gonatus onyx Young, 1972. Brooding females and associated eggs and hatchlings, captured between 1250 and 1750 m depth off southern California, are described. Brooding females appear to be senescent and lack tentacles. Large eggs of this species (3 mm) at cold temperatures (3 °C at capture depth) may require as long as 9 mo to develop. The high lipid content of the digestive gland in adult females of this species may provide fuel to support such an extended “brooding” period. Several aspects of the biology of Bathypolypus sponsalis were studied from 297 individuals (115 males, 180 females and 2 indeterminates) caught in a depth range of 200–800 m depth in the western Mediterranean Sea. The paper presents data on sizes (length-weight relationships, size-frequency distributions) and reproduction (sex ratio, maturation, condition), and also analyses of the diet of B. sponsalis from samples taken throughout the year. Length-weight relationships showed that females are heavier than males at the same mantle length. Although mature individuals were found all year round, the maximum number occurred in spring and summer. Sexual maturation data revealed that males mature at smaller sizes than females. The gonadosomatic index increased with maturity in both sexes; the increase was gradual in males, but abrupt in females. The digestive gland index was used as a condition index and showed a differential behaviour with maturity; it increased gradually in females, but decreased in males. Like other octopus species, B. sponsalis appears to be an opportunistic predator, feeding on a great variety of preys. Stomach content analysis yielded a total of 19 different prey items belonging to four major groups (Crustacea, Mollusca, Ophiuroidea and Osteichthya). The first three groups were the more frequent preys, since crustaceans, molluscs and ophiuroids appeared in 76%, 49% and 30% of the stomachs, respectively. Decapoda Reptantia (among crustaceans) and cephalopods and bivalves (among molluscs) constituted the more abundant prey items. While the Decapoda Reptantia group was significantly more abundant in stomach contents of females, gastropods were taken more frequently by males. These differences in diet could reveal females as a more active predators than males. Received: 5 March 2000 / Accepted: 7 November 2000  相似文献

Although the taxonomy of deep-sea protobranch bivalves is becoming better known, relatively little information is available on their reproductive biology and whether or not populations show reproductive periodicities. We have examined the reproductive biology of three common sympatric species as part of a long-term time-series of samples taken from 2900 m in the Rockall Trough from 1973 to 1983. Malletia cuneata Jeffreys, 1876 produces a maximum of 30 oocytes at any one time and these grow to a maximum size of 240 m. Maximum fecundity of Ledella pustulosa (Jeffreys, 1876) and Yoldiella jeffreysi (Hidalgo, 1877) is 174 and 360, respectively, and both species produce an egg of 120 m in diameter. These data indicate lecithotrophic early development in L. pustulosa and Y. jeffreysi, but direct development in M. cuneata; however, evidence from the prodissoconch length of M. cuneata suggests lecithotrophic development. L. pustulosa and Y. jeffreysi also differ from M. cuneata in having a distinct reproductive cycle with spawnout in the winter months. Both the continuously breeding M. cuneata and the seasonally breeding L. pustulosa ingest diatoms, coccoliths and foraminiferans, but whereas the diet of M. cuneata appears to be constant throughout the year there is an apparent reduction in the feeding activity of L. pustulosa concomitant with the deposition of phytodetritus on the deep-sea bed.  相似文献

The behaviour of cirrate octopods of the genera Cirroteuthis and Grimpoteuthis in their natural habitat was studied using video recordings. Sequences were filmed during the French cruise “Faranaut”, from the manned submersible “Nautile” at depths between 2702 and 4527 m, in two zones in the Fifteen-Twenty Fracture Zone on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Four different modes of active locomotion, namely crawling, take-off, fin-swimming, and pumping, and one apparently passive mode of locomotion, umbrella-style drifting, were observed. Jet-propulsion, a characteristic mode of locomotion typically employed by cephalopods, was not observed in the cirrate octopods filmed, although breathing movements of the mantle to aerate the gills were assumed to generate some slight propulsion through the funnel. Fin-swimming was the mode of active locomotion most frequently observed. Neutral buoyancy was confirmed in one individual after capture. This buoyancy enables passive drifting in the umbrella-style attitude observed in Cirroteuthis spp., possibly using near-bottom ocean currents. Pumping, a mode of slow locomotion generated by peristaltic waves in the primary and intermediate webs, also observed in Cirroteuthis sp., is described here for the first time. The take-off mode of locomotion, a sudden, single contraction of the brachial crown and web, is also described; it was always followed by fin-swimming. No medusoid swimming of the type previously described for opisthoteuthid cirrates was observed. A flight response to the approach of or contact with a strange object, i.e. the submersible, using the crawling, take-off, or fin-swimming modes was observed. A ballooning response was observed in a high-stress situation when a C.magna individual was captured. Received: 27 November 1996 / Accepted: 9 December 1996  相似文献

Five species of Sepiola and Sepictta were reared in the laboratory from egg to adult size. Spawning was achieved in 3 species of Sepiola after 5 to 7 months. The growth rate of the species reared did not depend upon temperature, which ranged from 12.5° to 20°C. A fairly constant size increase (2.5 mm mantle length/month) was observed in Sepiola during the 5 months after hatching. In Sepietta, the same growth rate was observed until the fourth month after hatching, when it increased to the rate of 5 mm mantle length/month.Laboratoire associé au C.N.R.S.  相似文献

Alate trapping studies of a monogyne population of the fire ant Solenopsis geminata indicate that two sizes of gynes are produced. Macrogynes, which participate in late spring and summer mating flights, are larger, fattier, and more than twice as heavy as microgynes, which participate in fall mating flights. Three patterns of gyne production were observed in 51 colonies studied: 35 produced macrogynes only, 9 produced microgynes only, and 7 produced both morphs, contributing to both summer and fall mating flights. Behavioral evidence and rearing studies suggest that macrogynes found new colonies independently, whereas microgynes achieve colony queen status by infiltrating or being adopted by established colonies. Of the total number of female alates collected from the trapped colonies, 56% were microgynes. However, because of their smaller size and lower fat content, microgynes made up only one-third of the caloric investment in female alates. By measuring the thorax lengths of queens from mature colonies, we determined that at least 56% were macrogynes and 35% or more were microgynes. These results indicate that as a reproductive strategy, colony investment in microgyne production may have at least as high a payoff as investment in macrogyne production. This is publication #24 of the Fire Ant Research Team  相似文献

The fecundity of 17 species of cumaceans belonging to 5 families from the eastern and western temperate regions of the Atlantic and the Canadian Arctic and Subarctic Oceans are discussed separately and then compared. The species range from 0.78 to 10.11 mm (mean carapace length) with fecundities ranging from 15.1 to 168.9 (mean number of eggs brood-1 female-1). Interspecific comparisons show that carapace volume versus volume of brood yields a very strong relationship (r=0.99). Therefore, it is a combination of carapace volume plus egg volume which determines the fecundity in the Cumacea. A discussion of the various life-history and reproductive strategies employed by the Cumacea is included.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships of eight species of incirrate octopodid from western Antarctica were investigated using molecular sequence data from the mitochondrial 16s ribosomal RNA gene. The genus Pareledone, which is endemic to the Antarctic, was found to be polyphyletic. On the basis of this and previous morphological studies, it is suggested that species that are morphologically similar to Pareledone polymorpha should be removed from the genus. This simplifies the diagnosis of Pareledone: a new diagnosis is given. The subfamilies Eledoninae and Graneledoninae were also found to be polyphyletic. The applicability of using the presence of an ink sac as a taxonomic character to define the subfamilies is discussed. Loss of an ink sac is almost certainly an adaptation to depth and use of this character has produced an artificial classification with no evolutionary significance. As the other two subfamilies, Octopodinae and Bathypolypodinae, are also separated by this character, it is probable that all the subfamilies of the Octopodidae are polyphyletic. The use of subfamilies should therefore be discontinued until our understanding of the evolution of the family Octopodidae increases.  相似文献

Respiration and calcification were investigated in the ectocochleate cephalopod Nautilus macromphalus Sowerby. Specimens were collected off New Caledonia, in October 1991, and kept at the Nouméa Aquarium until December 1991. The respiratory quotient and calcification rate of 5 individuals were measured during 14 short term incubations (63 to 363 min). Oxygen uptake was recorded with a polarographic oxygen sensor. CO2 flux and calcification were calculated from changes in pH and alkalinity (alkalinity-anomaly technique). Several methods were used to compute the respiratory quotient (RQ); a functional regression indicated an RQ of 0.74. CaCO3 exchange rates were linearly related to respiratory quotient, calcification occurring in individuals with a low RQ. CaCO3 uptake from the surrounding water was noncontinuous. From the highest CaCO3 uptake, maximum growth rate was estimated as 7.1 mg shell wt h- (=61 g yr-1).  相似文献

Summary In a semi-captive flock of Anser indicus with a surplus of females, permanent harem groups consisting of one male with one to five females, lasting for up to several years, were regularly observed. Polygynous groups contain one paired female to which the male is most attentive and secondary females which follow the paired male and are tolerated by the pair. Average annual reproductive success was lowest in lone females (0.02 young fledged per year), higher in secondary females (0.23 young) and highest in paired females (0.56 young per year). Differences seemed due to different degrees of male assistance. Secondary females could not be shown to be competitors of paired females in annual reproductive success. Lone females became secondary females mainly after an age of 3 years, i.e. when their chances to pair had dropped significantly. Females were more likely to become secondary instead of paired females in years when the adult sex ratio was more heavily female biased. As sex ratios in wild geese are usually around 1:1 or even biased towards males, females will not usually need to resort to the suboptimal secondary-female strategy. Hence, geese usually live in monogamous pairs instead of harem groups.  相似文献

Two species of small gastropods (<6 mm in length), Amphissa acutecostata (Philippi, 1844) and Gymnobela subaraneosa (Dautzenberg and Fischer, 1896), widely distributed in the northeast Atlantic, were found in large numbers in the Porcupine Seabight (Northeast Atlantic). Except for some aspects of taxonomy and distribution, as well as some data on larval development, the biology of these species is unknown. This study describes basic aspects of the life-history strategies of both species. Histological studies showed that oocyte and sperm development in both species was similar to the gametogenetic patterns observed in other deep-sea gastropods. In females, oogonia proliferated in the germinal epithelium and developed into previtellogenic oocytes (30–40 m), which grew into vitellogenic primary oocytes. Vitellogenic oocytes were covered by a thin layer of follicle cells involved in the vitellogenic processes. The maximum size for mature oocytes was 99.06 m for A. acutecostata and 114.82 m for G. subaraneosa. In A. acutecostata most of the volume of the ovary was occupied by previtellogenic and early vitellogenic oocytes, whereas in G. subaraneosa most of the volume was filled by large vitellogenic oocytes. Both species showed quasi-continuous production of oocytes. The oocyte size-frequency diagrams suggested a continuous release of a small number of oocytes throughout the year for A. acutecostata, and asynchronous periodic spawning events for G. subaraneosa. Gonad development and gametogenesis could be strongly affected by presence of parasites in one of the populations of G. subaraneosa.Communicated by J.P. Thorpe, Port Erin  相似文献

The relationship between reproduction and condition was studied in a 15 mo sample of 919 maturing, mature and post-spawning female Octopus mimus (388 to 3714 g) caught in Iquique (North Chile). O. mimus is a semelparous species, with reproduction taking place all year round. Investment in reproductive tissues was, on average, 9.9% of mature female body weight, independent of season. However, somatic growth during maturation was dependent on season and varied between 26 and 63% of the whole-body growth in weight. The condition of females did not vary markedly until spawning, although seasonal variations were apparent, winter being the most unfavourable. Condition deteriorated dramatically after spawning, during parental care of the eggs. During this period, somatic-tissue depletion, mainly from the muscles, was >25% of the total body weight of mature females. The fecundity of O. mimus was probably limited by the costs associated with parental care of the eggs.  相似文献

Macrourid fish are one of the most abundant marine species on continental margins worldwide. Although they play an important role in the ecosystem, little is known about their overall biology. We report here a large data set of the most abundant macrourid in Mediterranean waters, Trachyrincus scabrus, showing the main population and reproductive characteristics. The study was based on 3,239 specimens collected between 300 and 1,500 m depth on the northwestern Mediterranean in 2003–2004 and 2008–2009. The population showed a depth-related structure with the largest individuals at 1,100 m depth and the smallest (i.e., immature) at shallower depths. Macroscopic and microscopic analyses of the gonads showed that T. scabrus has a highly seasonal reproductive pattern. Spawning females were found during winter when the organic matter fluxes were highest on the continental slope. T. scabrus is a batch spawner with group-synchronous oocyte development and present low average fecundity of 14,191 oocytes.  相似文献

Bioluminescence is the production of visible light by a living organism. The light commonly appears as flashes from point sources (involving one or more cells, usually described as photocytes) or as a glandular secretion. A visible flash usually involves synchronous light emission from a group of cells or, if from a single-celled organism such as a dinoflagellate, from a group of organelles. The number of cells (or organelles) responding synchronously is the main determinant of the flash intensity. Bioluminescence is a common phenomenon in many deep-sea animals and is widespread among the Cnidaria. In this paper, we compare and contrast in situ and laboratory recordings of the bioluminescent responses of specimens of the deep-sea scyphozoans Atolla wyvillei, Atolla vanhoffeni, Atolla parva, Nausithoe rubra, Paraphyllina intermedia, Periphyllopsis braueri and Periphylla periphylla. Displays in all seven species consist of localised flashes and propagated waves of light in the surface epithelium. The first few single waves propagate at rates of up to 60 cm s-1 but subsequent ones in any sequence of stimuli gradually decrease in speed. After several single wave responses, a subsequent stimulus may elicit multiple waves that persist for several seconds. Following such a frenzy, the specimen becomes temporarily refractory to further stimuli, but if rested will recover its normal responses and may produce further frenzies. The dome area, situated above the coronal groove, of the genera Paraphyllina, Periphylla, and Nausithoe is covered with luminescent point sources. Such point sources are generally absent from the dome of species of Atolla. Captured specimens of A. parva also produce secretory bioluminescence, corroborating prior in situ observations of this ability. Secretory bioluminescence in P. periphylla takes the form of scintillating particles released from the lappet margins. We did not observe secretory displays in specimens of any other species in the laboratory, but one instance of apparent secretory luminescence was recorded in situ in a specimen of A. wyvillei.Communicated by J. Acartia tonsa Dana longevity and egg production data were studied over a 4-year period under standardized culture conditions. Egg-laying patterns and daily rates were evaluated as bioassay tools for measuring the nutritional value of various copepod foods, as well as assessing other aspects of environmental quality. Altogether, 337 females were observed in various aspects of this work. Experiments were performed with newly matured females in loosely covered crystallizing dishes. Fresh water and a standard concentration of algae were supplied daily, and a running daily tally was kept of the eggs produced. The effects of male copepods on egg production were analyzed. Males were either removed after the first eggs were observed or they remained with the female throughout her life span. Daily egg-laying rates of this latter group of females appeared to be more stable, but abnormal embryo development occurred if the males were not removed after fertilization. Likewise, the results of females which were not mated were studied. Life spans were shorter and egg production rates were lower than those of contemporary mated females. Unmated females were subjectively observed to be less active than their mated counterparts. The effects of continuous and temporary starvation on egg-laying were also observed. Under both normal and starved conditions, males appeared to have shorter life spans than either mated or unmated females. During starvation there were no real differences between the life spans or egg productions of mated or unmated females. Non-nutritional particulate matter was evaluated as a food source. It was ingested by the females, but did nothing to prolong the egg-laying period. Finally, the three algal components of the standard ration were evaluated. Females produced equally well with a mixed diet or with Thalassiosira pseudonana (100 m3) or Chroomonas salina (140 m3), the two larger species of this diet, but when Isochrysis galbana (40 m3) was fed, females reacted as if in a starved situation.  相似文献

The natural feeding of 485 Octopus mimus (164 to 3088 g) was studied in relation to the species' life cycle and environmental seasonal variations off the north of Chile from autumn 1991 to summer 1992. Analysis of digestive-tract contents revealed that O. mimus preyed upon 25 different prey items belonging to five zoological groups (Teleostei, Mollusca, Crustacea, Echinodermata and Polychaeta). Cannibalism was only occasional. The results indicate that the diet and food intake of this species are significantly affected by sex and maturation. Senescent individuals ingest a small amount of food, and their diet is mainly based on small, not very motile prey. The food intake, expressed as body weight, of non-senescent individuals is higher in females than in males. Seasonal changes in sea-water temperature seem to be followed by adjustments in food intake. Like other Octopus species, O. mimus appears to be an opportunistic predator.  相似文献
