Samples collected from the eastern Atlantic Ocean between 40° and 4° N with rectangular and ring nets contained male specimens of Nematoscelis atlantica, N. microps, and N. tenella (Euphausiacea) with saddle-shaped thickenings of chitin on the dorsal surface of some abdominal segments, and with enlarged photophores on the abdominal segments immediately posterior to those with thickenings. Two forms of each species are distinguished by the number and the position of chitinous thickenings and enlarged photophores. Except in a zone off W. Africa (approximately between 22° and 16° N) each form of N. atlantica and N. microps occurs as a distinct population. These populations appear to be characteristic of either the North or South Atlantic Central water, and the overlap zone corresponds approximately with the physical boundary between these water masses and with a faunal transition zone found in this region by other workers. For N. tenella it appears that only one form occurs as a separate population south of 18° N in South Atlantic Central water. Between 28° and 18° N the two forms co-exist.  相似文献

A bottom-mounted upward-facing 38-kHz echo sounder was deployed at ~400 m and cabled to shore in Masfjorden (~60°52′N, ~5°24′E), Norway. The scattering layers seen during autumn (September–October) 2008 were identified by trawling. Glacier lanternfish (Benthosema glaciale) were mainly distributed below ~200 m and displayed three different diel behavioral strategies: normal diel vertical migration (NDVM), inverse DVM (IDVM) and no DVM (NoDVM). The IDVM group was the focus of this study. It consisted of 2-year and older individuals migrating to ~200–270 m during the daytime, while descending back to deeper than ~270 m during the night. Stomach content analysis revealed increased feeding during the daytime on overwintering Calanus sp. We conclude that visually searching glacier lanternfish performing IDVM benefit from the faint daytime light in mid-waters when preying on overwintering Calanus sp.  相似文献

During 1955–2003, flipper tags were attached to 46,983 green turtles and ten turtles were fitted with satellite transmitters at Tortuguero, Costa Rica. Eight satellite-tracked turtles stayed within 135 km of the beach and probably returned to nest after release. The internesting area is more extensive than previously documented. Post-nesting migration routes of satellite-tracked turtles varied. Seven turtles swam close to the coast and three turtles swam through oceanic waters before moving toward nearshore areas. Sea surface height anomaly maps indicate that oceanic movements were consistent with the southwestern Caribbean gyre. Circling and semi-circling turtles could have been disoriented but submergence and surface times suggest they may have been feeding in Sargassum sp. concentrations. Rapid post-nesting migrations (mean 2.2 km hr−1) ended on benthic feeding grounds in shallow waters (<20 m) off Belize (n=1), Honduras (n=1) and Nicaragua (n=8). The spatial distribution of migration end points (n=10) and tag returns (n=4,669) are similar. Fishermen in Nicaragua target green turtles along migratory corridors and on foraging grounds. Management efforts are urgently needed in Nicaragua, particularly in the high-density feeding areas south and east of the Witties (N14°09 W82°45). The proximity of foraging grounds to the nesting beach (mean 512 km) may permit female turtles to invest more energy in reproduction and hence the Tortuguero population may have greater potential for recovery than other green turtle nesting populations. Recovery of the Tortuguero green turtle population will benefit countries and marine ecosystems throughout the Caribbean, especially Nicaragua.  相似文献

The grass rockfish (Sebastes rastrelliger Jordan and Gilbert, 1880) is a non-migratory, benthic, near shore species distributed along rocky reefs and sea grass beds. It occurs from Baja California, Mexico, to Oregon, USA, spanning the Oregonian and Californian biogeographic provinces. In California this fish receives intense fishing pressure from an expanding and loosely regulated live-fish fishery. It is not known whether or by what mechanism larvae and juveniles are retained locally or dispersed widely during the early life-history phase. Tissue samples of S. rastrelliger were collected between 1996 and 2001 from 405 adult fish at eight sites (42.70°N; 124.50°W to 32.67°N; 117.25°W) spanning the species range. Individuals were surveyed for polymorphism at six microsatellite loci. Allele frequency heterogeneity was not significant among all sites (FST=0.001; P=0.18), nor in pairwise comparisons, but a clear correlation of genetic and geographic distance was detected (P=0.019). Fit of genetic and geographic distance was stronger within biogeographic provinces than at a range-wide scale, suggesting that populations north and south of the Point Conception biogeographic boundary are not in equilibrium with respect to migration and genetic drift. Estimates of mean coastal dispersal distances associated with the isolation-by-distance relationship are on the order of 10 km generation–1. Such limited dispersal in a species with a pelagic early life history suggests active retention mechanisms near the shore. Geographic ranges of marine intertidal organisms are not entirely governed by discontinuities in temperature gradients. This is especially true in the eastern north Pacific Ocean, where temperature gradation is less steep than in the western north Atlantic Ocean. The southern limit of distribution of Littorina sitkana (Philippi, 1845) and the northern limit of L. planaxis (Philippi, 1847) occur at Charleston, Oregon (Latitude 43.4°N). No discontinuity in air or water temperature can be correlated with these distributional boundaries. A third species, L. scutulata (Gould, 1849), has the widest range, overlapping with L. planaxis in the south and L. sitkana in the north (Latitude 27.5° to 58°N). L. planaxis transplanted to northern Washington survived for 4 years, grew and produced planktonic larvae. Either larval mortality or south-flowing currents during planktonic life prevent this species from dispersing northward. L. sitkana has direct development and occurs only in habitats where adults are sheltered from waves and egg masses from desiccation. Lack of suitable habitat, coupled with the presence of the predatory crab Pachygrapsus crassipes (Randall, 1839) prevent the southward establishment of L. sitkana.  相似文献

Survival and growth of early post-settlement stages are critical for the development of seaweed populations. Fucoid germlings commonly settle in dense monospecific aggregates, where intraspecific competition and environmental variables (e.g. nutrient concentration and temperature) may affect survival and growth. Using factorial experiments, we determined the effects of settlement density (~10, ~50 and ~250 germlings cm–2), nutrient enrichment (from ~10 to ~40 µM N and from ~0.5 to ~2.5 µM P), and temperature (7°C and 17°C) on Fucus serratus and F. evanescens germlings in laboratory cultures over 3 months. Settlement density, nutrient concentration and temperature interactively affected growth of germlings, and the magnitude of this interaction varied between the two species. This represents the first record of such factorial interactions in Fucus spp. germlings. Intraspecific competition, estimated as the relative reduction in germling growth and survival from low to high densities, increased with decreasing nutrient concentration and increasing temperature in both species. While temperature and nutrient concentration had little effect on germling size distributions, size inequality and skewness generally increased with germling density, indicating that a few large individuals gained dominance and suppressed many smaller ones at high density. Self-thinning increased with settlement density and depended on nutrient concentration and species at high density. At high density, self-thinning increased with decreasing nutrient levels in F. evanescens, but not in F. serratus. At low density, nutrient enrichment increased germling growth in F. evanescens, but not in F. serratus, whereas growth in both species was stimulated by nutrient enrichment at higher densities. These results suggest that germling growth and self-thinning are more sensitive to variation in nutrient concentration in F. evanescens than in F. serratus. The potential implications of our findings for the understanding of eutrophication-related abundance changes in both species in southern Norway are discussed.Communicated by L. Prior studies of the hydrothermal vent mussel Bathymodiolus thermophilus (Bivalvia: Mytilidae), provided conflicting predictions about the dispersal ability and population structure of this highly specialized species. Analyses of morphological features associated with its larval shells revealed a feeding larval stage that might facilitate dispersal between ephemeral vent habitats. In contrast, an allozyme study revealed substantial genetic differentiation between samples taken from populations 2370 km apart on Galápagos Rift (Latitude 0°N) and the East Pacific Rise (13°N). To resolve the discrepancy between these studies, we examined allozyme and mitochondrial (mt) DNA variation in new samples from the same localities plus more recently discovered sites (9° and 11°N) along the East Pacific Rise. Although analysis of 26 enzyme-determining loci revealed relatively low levels of genetic variation within the five populations, no evidence existed for significant barriers to dispersal among populations. We estimated an average effective rate of gege flow (Nm) of 8 migrants per population per generation. Two common mtDNA variants predominated at relatively even frequencies in each population, and similarly provided no evidence for barriers to gene flow or isolation-by-distance across this species' known range. Larvae of this species appear to be capable of dispersing hundreds of kilometers along a continuous ridge system and across gaps separating non-contiguous spreading centers.  相似文献

The ivory tree coral Oculina varicosa (Leseur, 1820) is an ahermatypic branching scleractinian that colonizes limestone ledges at depths of 6–100 m along the Atlantic coast of Florida. This paper describes the development of embryos and larvae from shallow-water O. varicosa, collected at 6–8 m depth in July 1999 off Fort Pierce, Florida (27°32.542 N; 79°58.732 W). The effect of temperature on embryogenesis, larval survival, and larval swimming speed were examined in the laboratory. Ontogenetic changes in geotaxis and phototaxis were also investigated. Embryos developed via spiral cleavage from small (100 µm), negatively buoyant eggs. Ciliated larvae developed after 6–9 h at 25°C. Embryogenesis ceased at 10°C, was inhibited at 17°C, and progressed normally at 25°C and 30°C. Larval survival, however, was high across the full range of experimental temperatures (11–31°C), although mortality increased in the warmest treatments (26°C and 31°C). Larval swimming speed was highest at 25°C, and lower at the temperature extremes (5°C and 35°C). An ontogenetic change in geotaxis was observed; newly ciliated larvae swam to the water surface and remained there for approximately 18 h, after which they swam briefly throughout the water column, then became demersal. Early larvae showed no response to light stimulation, but at 14 and 23 days larvae appeared to exhibit negatively phototactic behavior. Although low temperatures inhibited the development of O. varicosa embryos, the larvae survived temperature extremes for extended periods of time. Ontogenetic changes in larval behavior may ensure that competent larvae are close to the benthos to facilitate settlement. Previous experiments on survival, swimming speeds, and observations on behavior of O. varicosa larvae from deep-water adults indicate that there is no difference between larvae of the deep and shallow populations.Communicated by J.P. A metapopulation, time-invariant, stage-classified matrix model was developed to assess the dynamics of an important Pinna nobilis population in the marine Lake Vouliagmeni (Korinthiakos Gulf, Greece). The main aim of the study was to provide insight on the life cycle of the fan mussel and reveal influential factors for its population dynamics, with a special focus on the effect of poaching. The size of the fan mussel shell was selected as a state variable, and the model consisted of five size classes. The lake was divided in two regions, a shallow region of high (illegal) fishing mortality and high recruitment (region 1) and a deeper region of low mortality and low recruitment (region 2). The estimation of the transition matrix (stage-specific growth and mortality probabilities) was based on a tagging survey between 2005 and 2006, while independent annual surveys for abundance estimation using distance sampling techniques were utilized for the estimation of recruitment and stage-specific fertilities. The population was found to be increasing with an intrinsic rate of increase r = 0.038; however, r was not statistically different from zero. The life expectancy and expected lifetime offspring production of individuals in region 1 was markedly lower than that of individuals in region 2. Due to poaching, the life expectancy of a yearling fan mussel was less than 2.5 years in region 1, while it was almost 12 years in region 2. The highest expected annual natural mortality of fan mussels occurred on their first year of life after settlement (~43%) and greatly declined at greater sizes. Perturbation analysis revealed that the population growth rate was most sensitive to the vital rates of the larger size classes in region 2 and to fertilities corresponding to offspring that settled in the same region. The spatial distribution and abundance of the species was greatly dependent on the extent of poaching, which caused a size segregation of individuals, with small and young individuals being abundant in region 1, and larger and older individuals being restricted in region 2. If poaching ceased, the fan mussel population would be increasing with a significantly higher intrinsic rate of increase (r = 0.186), while if region 2 was also illegally exploited at the same intensity as region 1, the fan mussel population would be decreasing with r = −0.364 and would eventually collapse. The existence of refuge areas, where fan mussels may grow and reproduce, providing adjacent areas with offspring, seems crucial for the viability of local populations. Transplantation of fan mussels from high mortality areas to low mortality refuges might prove to be an effective measure to protect local populations of the species.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in catch rate, growth and mortality of Nassarius reticulatus from an intertidal lagoon and a wave-exposed beach at Rhosneigr (Anglesey, North Wales, UK) are described. The number of N. reticulatus caught in baited traps from the lagoon was significantly higher (>125 individuals trap−1) during the summer (>18°C), than at <12°C (<65 individuals trap−1), and the numbers caught in the lagoon were an order of magnitude greater than on the beach, >13 individuals trap−1 in July (>16°C), and <5 individuals trap−1 between December and April (<9.5°C). Predictions of shell growth attained by N. reticulatus annually in the lagoon using graphical modal progression analysis (MPA) of length frequency data, were similar to the growth of marked and recaptured lagoon N. reticulatus. Predictions of shell growth using computerised length frequency distribution analysis (LFDA), however, did not reflect the growth as accurately as MPA. Modal progression analysis demonstrated that N. reticulatus from the lagoon achieved a higher asymptotic maximum shell length (L ) and a lower growth constant (K) than animals from the beach. Shell growth was seasonal with growth of the lagoon individuals slowing down towards the end of September and resuming in early April, about a month later than the beach individuals. Mortality of N. reticulatus was greater during the summer, and survival was lower in the lagoon than on the beach. Recruitment patterns were similar in the lagoon and on the beach, and MPA and LFDA predicted that larval N. reticulatus settled between late summer and early autumn, with juveniles (7–8.9 mm) appearing in the population the following year, between February and April. Growth of male and female N. reticulatus in the laboratory was similar and was temperature and size dependent. The different growth patterns between N. reticulatus from the two habitats, predicted using MPA, were maintained when individuals were reared under laboratory conditions for ∼6 months; N. reticulatus <21 mm from the beach grew faster than individuals from the lagoon, although N. reticulatus >21 mm from the lagoon grew faster and attained a larger length (26 mm) than individuals from the beach (24 mm). Low food availability did not affect N. reticulatus survival in the laboratory but significantly suppressed shell growth.  相似文献

Sand shrimp, Crangon septemspinosa Say, are important to the trophic dynamics of coastal systems in the northwestern Atlantic. To evaluate predatory impacts of sand shrimp, daily energy requirements (J ind.–1 day–1) were calculated for this species from laboratory estimates of energy losses due to routine (RR), active (RA), and feeding (RSDA) oxygen consumption rates (J ind.–1 h–1), coupled with measurements of diel motile activity. Shrimp used in this study were collected biweekly from the Niantic River, Connecticut (41°33N; 72°19W) during late spring and summer of 2000 and 2001. The rates of shrimp energy loss due to RR and RA increased exponentially with increasing temperature, with the magnitude of increase greater between 6°C and 10°C (Q10=3.01) than between 10°C and 14°C (Q10=2.85). Rates of RR doubled with a twofold increase in shrimp mass, and RSDA was 0.130 J h–1+RR, irrespective of shrimp body size. Shrimp motile activity was significantly greater during dark periods relative to light periods, indicating nocturnal behavior. Nocturnal activity also increased significantly at higher temperatures, and at 20°C shifted from a unimodal to a bimodal pattern. Laboratory estimates of daily metabolic expenditures (1.7–307.4 J ind.–1 day–1 for 0.05 and 1.5 g wet weight shrimp, respectively, between 0°C and 20°C) were combined with results from previous investigations to construct a bioenergetic model and make inferences regarding the trophic positioning of C. septemspinosa. Bioenergetic model estimates indicated that juvenile and adult shrimp could meet daily energy demands via opportunistic omnivory, selectively preying upon items of high energy content (e.g. invertebrate and fish tissue) and compensating for limited prey availability by ingesting readily accessible lower energy food (e.g. detritus and plant material).Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at Communicated by J.P. Genetic differentiation of the Atlantic swordfish (Xiphias gladius) was investigated by a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at the calmodulin gene (CAM) intron locus. Clearly distinct allele and genotype frequencies were observed between the north (20–41°N) and mid-south (10°N–33°S) Atlantic samples. Much lower frequency of A allele (37.5–57.1%) was observed in the north samples (n = 160 in total) than in the mid-south samples (83.3–92.6%; n=354), and homozygote BB was common in the north samples (23.4–31.3%) but very rare or absent (0–3.9%) in the mid-south samples. Very strong population subdivision was observed between the two groups (F ST = 0.34, P < 0.001), while the allele and genotype frequencies within each ocean basin persisted over time (1990–2002 in the north, and 1994–2002 in the mid-south). Of two samples from the presumed boundary zone, one (n = 18) (14°N, 48°W) presented intermediate frequencies of the A allele (66.7%) and BB homozygote (11.1%), while the other (n = 23) (10–17°N, 28–37°W) shared similar frequencies of the A allele (89.1%) and BB homozygote (4.3%) with those of the mid-south Atlantic samples. These results indicate that the gene flow and individual migration between the north and mid-south Atlantic populations are considerably restricted and that the current management boundary between the north and south Atlantic swordfish stocks of 5°N should be reconsidered.  相似文献

Acclimation of reef corals to environmental conditions has been related to metabolic response at large geographic scales, but regional relationships have rarely been described. Physiological responses to temperature increases of Montastraea annularis (Ellis and Solander 1786) from an inner lagoon and an outer barrier reef in the Gulf of Honduras, southern Belize, were compared in May 2003. The hypothesis that inferred differences in thermal history would result in contrasting responses to elevated temperature was tested. Ambient seawater temperatures adjacent to corals at 4–5 m depth were measured every 15 min at inner lagoon and outer barrier reef collection sites for 1 year (June 2002–May 2003). Monthly averages and 3-day running averages (warmest period, July–October 2002) of daily maximum seawater temperatures were significantly higher (by ∼0.5°C) at inner lagoon reef compared to outer barrier reef sites. M. annularis photosynthesis (P) and respiration (R) rates were measured in respirometers at six temperatures between 29°C and 35°C approximately every hour, with repeated measurements over 3 h. P and R were significantly lower across most temperature treatments for samples collected from the inner lagoon compared to outer barrier reef. Both inner and outer reef M. annularis displayed an increase in P and R with increasing temperature between 29°C and 32°C, but above 32°C P and R sharply declined. P/R ratio versus temperature showed a significant difference between the elevations of the regression lines suggesting that M. annularis from the outer barrier reefs may have been more physiologically stressed than those from the inner lagoon reefs when exposed to acute temperature changes. These results emphasize that thermal stress must be considered within the context of acclimation temperature, and that short-term exposures may have physiologically important effects on this species.  相似文献

The transport of eel early life stages may be critical to their population dynamics. This transport from ocean spawning to freshwater, estuarine and coastal nursery areas is a combination of physical and biological processes (including swimming behavior). In New Jersey, USA, the American eel (Anguilla rostrata) enters estuaries as glass eels (48.7–68.1 mm TL) in contrast to the Conger eel (Conger oceanicus) that enters as larger (metamorphosing) leptocephali (68.3–117.8 mm TL). To begin to understand the mechanisms of cross-shelf transport for these species, we measured the potential swimming capability (critical swimming speed, U crit) under ambient conditions throughout the ingress season. A. rostrata glass eels were collected over many months (January–June) at a range of temperatures (4–21°C), with relative condition declining over the course of the ingress period as temperatures warmed. C. oceanicus occurred later in the season (April–June) and at warmer temperatures (14–24.5°C). Mean U crit values for A. rostrata (11.7–13.3 cm s−1) and C. oceanicus (14.7–18.6 cm s−1) were comparable, but variable, with portions of the variability explained by water temperature, relative condition, ontogenetic stage, and fish length. Travel times to Little Egg Inlet, New Jersey, estimated using 50% U crit values, indicate it would take A. rostrata ~30 and ~60 days to swim from the shelf edge and Gulf Stream, respectively. Travel times for C. oceanicus were shorter, ~20 days from the shelf edge, and ~45 days from the Gulf Stream. Despite differences in life stage, our results indicate both species are competent swimmers, and suggest they are capable of swimming from the Gulf Stream and/or edge of the continental shelf to estuarine inlets.  相似文献

The energetics of feeding has been investigated in demersal fish with similar sedentary lifestyles from the Antarctic (Notothenia neglecta Nybelin), North Sea (Myoxocephalus scorpius L.) and Indian Ocean (Cirrhitichys bleekeri Bleeker). In general, the metabolic rates of fasting individuals were positively correlated with adaptation temperature: values for a standard 100 g fish (mg O2/h) were 3.3 for N. neglecta at around 0 °C, 2.7 for winter-acclimatized M. scorpius at 5 °C, 4.3 for summer-acclimatized M. scorpius at 15 °C, and 7.0 for C. bleekeri at 25 °C. In all species, following a single satiating meal, oxygen consumption increased to a peak of 2 to 3.5 times the fasting values. Maximum rates of oxygen consumption after feeding were several-fold higher in the warm-than in the cold-water species. After controlling for the effects of body mass and energy intake by analysis of covariance, the duration of the increase in metabolic rate, referred to as specific dynamic action (SDA), was found to be 3 to 4 times shorter in the warm- than in the cold-water fish, ranging from 57 h in C. bleekeri to 208 h in N. neglecta. In contrast, the SDA was not significantly different in the various species, corresponding to 15 to 23% of the energy ingested. Seasonal influences on metabolism and feeding were also studied in N. neglecta acclimated to simulated winter (-1.0 to-0.5 °C; 3 h light:21 h dark) or summer (0 to 0.9 °C; 21 h light:3 h dark) conditions. The metabolic rates of fasting and fed individuals, and the characteristics of the SDA were found to be independent of acclimation conditions. This suggests that N. neglecta is capable of processing food at similar rates throughout the year. Energy stores and enzyme activities were measured in the swimming muscles and liver of fish fed ad libitum. Summer-acclimated fish had higher concentrations of liver triglyceride stores and elevated activities of some enzymes of intermediary metabolism relative to winter-acclimated fish. The observed changes in intermdiary metabolism are probably related to annual cycles of growth and reproduction. It is suggested that the low aerobic scope for physiological performance in Antarctic fish may necessitate the seasonal switching of energy allocation between growth and reproduction.  相似文献

Reproductive cycle, asexual reproduction, and population dynamics of the fissiparous brittle star, Ophiactis savignyi, which inhabits the exhalant passages of the sponge Haliclona sp. were examined monthly from February 1991 to January 1992 at Wanlitung, southern Taiwan (22°N; 120°E). Mature gametes were found from March to December, but release was mainly in May and June. Sexual recruits were found from May to December, with the highest frequency (14.1% of population) in June. Sexual recruits composed 2.4% of the 1-yr sample. Sex ratio of male to female was 24:1. Fission occurred throughout the year, although the frequency of recently split individuals was lower from January to June (6 to 31%), and higher from July to December (42 to 52%). The occurrence of fission was highest after spawning. Regenerating individuals composed 48.2% of the 1-yr sample. Population density fluctuated greatly during summer due to recruitment by fission and mortality or dispersal due to the stressful environmental conditions. Both sexual and asexual reproduction of O. savignyi were successful at this site.  相似文献

Life-history features of the sympatric amphipods Themisto pacifica and T. japonica in the western North Pacific were analyzed based on seasonal field samples collected from July 1996 through July 1998, and data from laboratory rearing experiments. T. pacfica occurred throughout the year, with populations peaking from spring to summer. In contrast, T. japonica were rare from autumn to early winter, but became abundant in late winter to spring. Mature T. pacifica females and juveniles occurred together throughout the year, indicating year-round reproduction. Mature T. japonica females were observed only in spring, and juveniles occurred irregularly in small numbers, suggesting limited, early-spring reproduction in this study area. Size composition analysis of T. pacifica identified a total of eight cohorts over the 2 years of the study. Due to the smaller sample size and rarity of mature females (>9.6 mm) and males (>7.1 mm), cohort analyses of T. japonica were not comparable. Laboratory rearing of specimens at 2°C, 5°C, 8°C and 12°C revealed that a linear equation best expressed body length growth by T. pacifica, while a logistic equation best expressed body length growth by T. japoncia. Combining these laboratory-derived growth patterns with maturity sizes of wild specimens, the minimum and maximum generation times of females at a temperature range of 2–12°C were computed as 32 days (12°C) and 224 days (2°C), respectively, for T. pacifica, and 66 days (12°C) and 358 days (2°C), respectively, for T. japonica. The numbers of eggs or juveniles in females marsupia increased with female body length and ranged from 23 to 64 for T. pacifica and from 152 to 601 for T. japonica. Taking into account the number of mature female instars, lifetime fecundities were estimated as 342 eggs for T. pacifica and 1195 eggs for T. japonica. The successful invasion of non-indigeneous species depends on initial colonization as well as establishing a self-maintaining population. The invasive hydrozoan Moerisia lyonsi (Boulenger, 1908), possibly originating from low-salinity waters in the Black Sea and Middle East regions, has become established in low-salinity waters in several estuaries of North America, including Chesapeake Bay. The effects of temperature and salinity on mortality of M. lyonsi polyps were examined in the laboratory in February 2001 in the presence of abundant food. The polyps of M. lyonsi were directly transferred from 20°C and 10 salinity to one of 45 combinations of temperature (10–29°C) and salinity (1–40). Polyp mortality within 7 days occurred only in low-temperature treatments with salinities of 35–40. Surviving polyps reproduced asexually in salinities of 1–40 at 20–29°C, and in salinities of 1–25 at 15°C, but not in any salinities at 10°C. The greatest asexual reproduction rates, an index for population survival potential, occurred at salinities of 5–20. Survival and reproduction of M. lyonsi over such broad temperature and salinity ranges indicate that M. lyonsi may colonize and establish populations throughout the Chesapeake Bay; however, M. lyonsi medusae were reported only at salinities <9.3 there. This discrepancy may be due to the effects of predators. The scyphomedusan Chrysaora quinquecirrha (Desor, 1848), but not the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi (A. Agassiz, 1865) consumed M. lyonsi medusae in laboratory experiments in August–September 2001. Populations of M. lyonsi do not appear to be limited by temperature and salinity conditions; however, their distribution in Chesapeake Bay may be restricted to low salinities not inhabited by predators.Communicated by J.P. Five standing stocks were measured together at similar latitudes and longitudes on seasonally repetitive cruises in 3 areas — western, eastern, and southern — of the eastern tropical Pacific. The stocks were chlorophyll a at 0 to 150 m depth (mg/m2), night and day zooplankton at 0 to 200 m depth (ml/1000 m3), and night crustacean micronekton and fish-pluscephalopod micronekton at 0 to 200 m depth (ml/1000 m3). The logarithms of the measurements of each stock in each area were subjected to analysis of variance with the following factors: season (2 month period), latitude, and longitude. Seasonal coverage was most comprehensive, with 7 successive periods, in the western area (approximately 16° N to 3° S latitude, 100° to 122° W longitude). Most stocks in most parts of the western area had a simple seasonal cycle of low amplitude, with a single maximum and minimum that usually differed by a factor <2; some stocks in some parts of the area exhibited no seasonal cycle; all statistically significant cycles, except for fish-plus-cephalopod micronekton, were similar in phase. In the other two areas, located broadly to the east and south of the western area, suitable measurements were made at only 2 periods (opposite seasons) of the year. There were indications of phase differences between chlorophyll a and zooplankton in the eastern area, which should be further investigated. Most standing stocks declined gradually from east to west, and were higher in known upwelling areas and areas of shoal thermocline than elsewhere.  相似文献

We compared populations of Laminaria hyperborea from different regions along the Norwegian coast (58–71°N). The aim of the study was to examine possible regional differences in population demography and to relate these to latitudinal gradients in ambient temperature and light. A number of population parameters were examined in understory and canopy kelp individuals. We found latitudinal differences in stipe growth rate and growth pattern, mortality, longevity, recruitment and density. Stipe growth rate was higher for young individuals in mid-Norway than in south and north Norway. Mean stipe length was related to temperature and light, and correlated significantly with indices combining temperature during the growth season and daylength in summer. Mortality decreased and longevity increased with increasing latitude, probably because of a temperature decrease with increasing latitude and a general reduction in metabolic rate. Greater longevity may also cause the observed decrease in recruitment rate with increasing latitude, since there are fewer opportunities for understory individuals to replace dead canopy individuals. The development of particularly large kelp in mid-Norway appears to be explained by high growth rates and not a particularly long life span, as earlier assumed. This has consequences for decisions of the optimal harvesting regime for the species in the region, with regard to yield and maintenance of associated biodiversity.Communicated by M.
