The current study determined behavioral and electrophysiological photosensitivities for three species of mesopelagic crustaceans: Pasiphaea multidentata Esmark, 1866 (Decapoda: Pasiphaeidae), Sergestes arcticus Kröyer, 1855 (Decapoda: Sergestidae), and Meganyctiphanes norvegica M. Sars, 1857 (Euphausiacea: Euphausiidae). In addition, in situ quantifications of the species vertical distributions in relation to downwelling irradiances were also determined in two locations in the northwest Atlantic Ocean, Wilkinson Basin (WB) and Oceanographer Canyon (OC). Data are from six 2-week cruises between June and September from 1995 to 2001. P. multidentata and M. norvegica were the most abundant large crustaceans in WB, and S. arcticus and M. norvegica were the most abundant large crustaceans in OC. The behavioral light sensitivity thresholds of P. multidentata and M. norvegica from WB were both 107 photons cm–2 s–1 and those of S. arcticus and M. norvegica from OC were both 108 photons cm–2 s–1. Electrophysiologically, P. multidentata was significantly more sensitive than M. norvegica from either location, S. arcticus was significantly more sensitive than M. norvegica from OC, and M. norvegica from WB was significantly more sensitive than M. norvegica from OC. A correlation was found between electrophysiologically measured photosensitivity and downwelling irradiance, with the most sensitive species, P. multidentata and S. arcticus, associated with the lowest irradiance at daytime depths. The photosensitivities of M. norvegica collected from the clearer waters of OC were significantly lower than those of individuals collected from the more turbid WB waters. These results indicate that downwelling irradiance has a significant impact on interspecies and intraspecies vertical distribution patterns in the mesopelagic realm.Communicated by J.P. The seasonal abundance, distribution, maturity, growth and population dynamics of the euphausiidsThysanoessa raschi (M. Sars, 1864),T. inermis (Krøyer, 1846) andMeganyctiphanes norvegica (M. Sars, 1857) were studied in Ísafjord-deep, a fjord in northwest Iceland, from February 1987 to February 1988. Sampling was made at nine stations along the length of the fjord at approximately monthly intervals, along with hydrographic measurements and water sampling for nutrient analysis and measurements of chlorophylla concentrations. Spring warming of the water began in late May and maximum temperatures (8° to 10°C) were observed in late July–September. The phytoplankton spring-bloom started in early April, and the highest chlorophylla levels were measured in early May (7.0 mg m–3). A small increase was observed in the chlorophylla content in August. The greatest abundance of juveniles and males and females of all three species was observed during January and February 1988, during which period the euphausiids were concentrated in the middle and inner parts of the fjord. Euphausiid eggs were first recorded in the plankton in mid-May, and the greatest abundance ofThysanoessa spp. larvae occurred at the end of May. Larvae ofM. norvegica were not observed in Ísafjord-deep, indicating that recruitment of this species was occurring from outside the fjord.T. raschi andT. inermis had a life span of just over 2 yr; the life span ofM. norvegica was more difficult to determine. Almost all femaleT. raschi were mature at the age of 1 yr, while mostT. inermis females appeared not to mature until 2 yr of age. Most males of both species took part in breeding at 1 yr of age. The maximum carapace length ofT. raschi andT. inermis was 8 to 9 and 9 to 10 mm, respectively. The largestM. norvegica had a carapace length of 9 to 10 mm. The spawning of the euphausiids in Ísafjord-deep appeared to be closely related to the phytoplankton spring bloom; water temperature appeared to have no influence on spawning.  相似文献

Summary Antennae of femalePapilio butterflies perceive many volatile plant constituents with widely differing, constituent-specific sensitivities. We compared the responses of threePapilio species to volatiles from host and non-host plants to assess species-specificity and the degree of evolutionary conservatism in olfactory responses.Since previous studies had demonstrated that the polar constituents in odor fromDaucus carota stimulate oviposition behavior inPapilio polyxenes, we collected headspace volatiles fromD. carota, Pastinaca sativa (both Apiaceae) andArtemisia dracunculus (Asteraceae) and separated the polar fraction of these volatiles by gas chromatography. GC-coupled electroantennograms (GC-EAG) were recorded from the speciesPapilio polyxenes, P. machaon hippocrates andP. troilus. In addition, the responses of the three species to five compounds known as generally occurring constituents of plant odor were recorded. The relative sensitivities for these compounds were nearly identical in all threePapilio species. The response spectra to the separated plant volatiles also showed considerable similarities among the species.From the limited set of GC peaks evoking a response in one of the species, 64% (D. carota), 44% (P. sativa) and 29% (A. dracunculus) also evoked a response in both of the other species. The responses of the two closely related Apiaceae feeders (P. polyxenes, P. m. hippocrates) to volatiles fromD. carota were more similar to each other than was either to the response ofP. troilus, which feeds on Lauraceae. However, this was not true for the responses to volatiles fromP. sativa. The least congruence among the three species was found in the responses to volatiles fromA. dracunculus, a non-host for all of them. The differences and similarities found in the response profiles of the threePapilio species are discussed with respect to evolutionary adaptation to host odor versus evolutionary conservatism in adaptation of olfactory receptors.  相似文献

We examined phylogenetic relationships among three Bathymodiolus species in Japanese waters and Bathymodiolus spp. from the Manus Basin by two different approaches. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis allowed us to compare 263–407 (average=318) proteins, giving comprehensive information on genetic distances among the species. The neighbor-joining tree presented two clusters: (1) B. japonicus and B. platifrons and (2) B. septemdierum and B. sp. Members of the first cluster contain methanotrophic endosymbiotic bacteria and members of the second cluster contain thioautotrophic endosymbionts. DNA sequencing of a fragment (415 bp) of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) provided a neighbor-joining tree with the same topology as that derived from protein analysis. Inspection of intraspecific variation in COI in B. japonicus and B. platifrons revealed no genetic differentiation between mussel populations of either species from cold-water seeps versus hydrothermal vents, suggesting high adaptability of these Bathymodiolus species to deep-sea chemosynthetic environments. Our results indicated genetic exchanges between mussels from distant localities, suggesting that a limited dispersal capability of the larvae is not the likely factor leading to speciation events in these Bathymodiolus species.Communicated by T. Habitat-forming, ecosystem engineer species are common in most marine systems. Still, much uncertainty exists about how individual and population-level traits of these species contribute to ecosystem processes and how engineering species jointly affect biodiversity. In this manipulative field experiment, we examined how biodiversity in marginal blue mussel beds is affected by blue mussel (1) body size, density and patch context and (2) presence of fucoid and algal structures. In the study area, bladder-wrack (Fucus vesiculosus), filamentous algae and blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) coexist at shallow depths in a variety of patch configurations and offer complex habitats with a high variability of resources. We hypothesized that complexity in terms of mussel bed structure and algal presence determines species composition and abundance. Results from the experiment were compared with macrofaunal communities found in natural populations of both engineering species. Results show that the physical structure and blue mussel patch context are important determinants for species composition and abundance. Results further show that the presence of algal structures positively affects diversity in blue mussel habitats due to increased surface availability and complexity that these algae offer. This study shows that blue mussel beds at the very margin of their distribution have an indisputable function for promoting and maintaining biodiversity and suggest that facilitative effects of habitat-modifying species are important on Baltic Sea rocky shores with fundamental importance to community structure.  相似文献

Two new species of Hydroidomedusae, Parateclaia norvegica sp.nov. and Foersteria quadrata sp.nov., are described from specimens collected in Korsfjorden, western Norway. Neither genus has previously been observed in the North-Atlantic Ocean. The closest congenerics to the new species occur in the Mediterranean, where family Teclaiidae has been considered endemic. P. norvegica and F. quadrata were only collected at sites 500 m or deeper and are possibly deep-water benthopelagic species like their congenerics elsewhere. Sampling took place for the entire year 2003 at 2- to 4-week intervals. F. quadrata, the more numerous of the new species, was absent from the water column only during the spring months, the implications of which regarding its lifecycle are discussed. Hypotheses on speciation in the Foersteria species group and family Teclaiidae are shortly discussed.  相似文献

To better understand the dynamics of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) contamination a field study was carried out on the feeding behavior of Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lmk) during an important DSP outbreak. The study was focused on the relationships between phytoplankton in seawater and algal cells, or their remnants, in mussel stomachs. During the period studied, M. galloprovincialis seemed to feed selectively on dinoflagellates rather than diatoms. Further selection was observed among different dinoflagellate genera, a preference for the genus Dinophysis being particularly evident. In addition, mussels seemed to open the thecae of Dinophysis cells and digest them more easily than other dinoflagellates. Due to the high variability of the results of phytoplankton analysis in the mussel stomachs, no correlation was found between the abundance of Dinophysis species in the mussels' stomachs and the content of okadaic acid plus dinophysistoxin-1 in their digestive glands, evaluated with an ELISA assay. Conversely, the presence of Dinophysis fortii (the main DSP-causative agent in the area studied) in integrated net samples of the whole water column and the toxin content of the digestive glands presented similar temporal trends. Rates of predation by the invertebrates Aurelia aurita, Thysanoessa raschi and Euchaeta norvegica on larval stages of cod (Gadus morhua L.), flunder (Platichthys flesus L.), plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.), herring (Clupea harengus L.), and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) were determined. Experiments were conducted in late winter and early spring 1982 with predators collected in Loch Etive, Scotland and prey obtained from several locations in Great Britain. Early stages of the smallest species, cod, flounder and turbot, tended to be most vulnerable to all three predators, while the early stages of the larger species, plaice and herring, and older stages of all species, were less vulnerable. For all stages and species of larvae, predation rates by the three predators were most closely related to larval length and escape swimming speed. Larval length itself was closely correlated to indices of larval escape ability. Low predation rates on large larvae by E. norvegica could be due to handling difficulties, whereas for A. aurita and T. raschi these low rates were due to escape abilities of the larger larvae. Prey movement is an important stimulus eliciting predation in E. norvegica but not in A. aurita or T. raschi.  相似文献

The effect of diel and seasonal changes in the distribution of fishes on a subtropical sandy beach on the southeastern coast of Brazil were studied. Seine netting was carried out on both seasonal and diel scales between July 1998 and June 1999. A total of 46 fish species was recorded, six being numerically dominant: Anchoa tricolor, Gerres aprion, Harengula clupeola, Atherinella brasiliensis, Mugil liza and Diapterus rhombeus. Seasonal changes in abundance of dominant species were detected. Species dominant in winter were Anchoa tricolor, H. clupeola and Atherinella brasiliensis; in spring, Anchoa tricolor and G. aprion; in summer G. aprion and D. rhombeus; and in autumn M. liza and H. clupeola. Overall, diel patterns did not reveal any significant trends; however, if we consider each season separately, an increase in A. tricolor abundance was recorded during the day in winter/spring, being replaced at night by H. clupeola in winter, and by G. aprion in spring. Increases in number of individuals and biomass at sunset, and decreases during the night were recorded. The winter/spring inshore/offshore movements at diel scale performed by the three most abundant species demonstrate that diel fluctuation acts more at a species-specific level than at a structural one; in summer there was no evidence of diel movements due to a heavy influx of G. aprion and D. rhombeus, which use the area throughout day and night, increasing overall abundance. Seasonal movements seems to be related to ontogenetic change in species, while diel movements in the fish assemblage seem to be more related to physiological requirements, such feeding activity of each particular species, than to physico-chemical conditions.Communicated by O. Studies of the biology of oceanic copepods are few relative to those of coastal species. Females of the genus Euchaeta have spermatophores attached to the genital somite by the male and carry their broods of eggs attached to this somite, so defining the breeding season. Populations of E. norvegica in the fjordic environment of Loch Etive (collected between 1971 and 1974 and from 1978 to 1979), Scotland and in the marginal oceanic region of the Rockall Trough, northeastern Atlantic Ocean (collected between 1973 and 1976) and of a further eight species of Euchaeta in the Trough are examined. Seasonal changes in the incidence of egg masses and spermatophores attached to the females, sex ratio and population numbers are determined. Sampling errors in the estimation of these parameters are larger in the oceanic Rockall Trough. The Loch Etive populations of E. norvegica produce two generations per year with a proportion, variable between years, of the population producing a third generation. This species produces a single annual generation in the Rockall Trough as do E. acuta and E. pseudotonsa. Two generations per year are probably passed through by E. gracilis in the Trough while the large bathypelagic E. sarsi may produce a single generation in the autumn of every second year. The other bathypelagic species, E. barbata, E. scotti, E. abbreviata and E. longissima, breed continuously throughout the year and no estimate of their generation times is possible. Consequently, this approach to population analysis is useful where breeding is seasonal, but resolving generation time in bathypelagic crustaceans remains a problem.  相似文献

The blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, is the most conspicuous animal species in the northern Baltic rocky sublittoral. In the studied area the species lives at the margin of its salinity tolerance. Although dwarfed by the low-salinity conditions, blue mussels in the northern Baltic are very abundant and have a decisive role in the benthic and pelagic ecosystems. We studied abundance, size distribution, biomass and growth rate of blue mussels along a 270 km salinity gradient in the northern Baltic Sea. Samples (n=317, 1998-1999) from moderately exposed and exposed rocky shores at seven study areas were collected in the southern Archipelago Sea in the west and into the central Gulf of Finland in the east, where the species is becoming increasingly rare. The results show a marked decline in mean mussel size and biomass from the saline west to the less saline east. The growth rate also decreased with lower ambient salinity. However, abundance of small mussels was considerably higher in the central and eastern parts of the study area. Vertically, the highest biomass was recorded at intermediate depths (5 and 8 m), being lower at both shallower (3 m) and deeper bottoms (12 m). It is concluded that salinity is the foremost factor determining size structure and growth rate among populations within the area. The results suggest that predation further influences the population structure of blue mussels living at the edge of their range in the central Gulf of Finland ultimately set by their salinity tolerance.  相似文献

Choice of a site for oviposition can have fitness consequences. We investigated the consequences of female oviposition decisions for offspring survival using the bitterling, Rhodeus sericeus, a freshwater fish that spawns inside living unionid mussels. A field survey of nine bitterling populations in the Czech Republic revealed a significantly lower rate of release of juvenile bitterling from Anodonta cygnea compared to three other mussel species. A field experiment demonstrated that female bitterling show highly significant preferences for spawning in A. anatina, Unio pictorum, and U. tumidus. Within a species, female bitterling avoided mussels containing high numbers of bitterling embryos. Mortality rates of bitterling embryos in mussels were strongly density dependent and the strength of density dependence varied significantly among mussel species. Female preferences for mussels matched survival rates of embryos within mussels and females distributed their eggs among mussels such that embryo mortalities conformed to the predictions of an ideal free distribution model. Triweekly trawling around low tide during daylight at 1, 2, 3, and 4 m depths along north Kuwait Bay's extensive intertidal mudflats from 1 April 1985 through 9 December 1986 showed the catchability ofMetapenaeus affinis (H. Milne-Edwards, 1837),M. stebbingi Nobili, 1904,Parapenaeopsis stylifera (H. Milne-Edwards, 1837), andPenaeus semisulcatus De Haan, 1844 differed significantly with depth and season. All species were significantly more catchable in 1 and 2 m depths than in 3 and 4 m depths.M. affinis showed the clearest and most consistent relationship with depth: catchability in 1 m depths was significantly greater than that in 2 m depths (24.9 vs 5.4 per 5-min tow), and catchability in 1 and 2 m depths was significantly greater than that in 3 and 4 m depths (15.2 vs 1.4 per 5-min tow).M. affinis also showed the clearest relationship of increasing size with depth. Shrimp captured in 1 m depths were significantly smaller (~ 14 mm carapace length, CL) than those captured in 2 m depths in the spring (~23 mm CL) and summer (~ 18 mm CL). In the absence of low-salinity waters and intertidal vegetation, it is believed that the edge of the advancing and receding tide over the mudflats, i.e. the shallowest waters, provides juvenile shrimp, particularlyM. affinis, protection from predation.  相似文献

Diel migration of Mesodinium rubrum, Eutreptiella sp., Scrippsiella trochoidea, Dinophysis acuminata and Ceratium furca throughout a 24 h cycle is described for a stable, well-stratified estuary (Ría de Vigo, NW Spain). Daily changes in light quantity and in spectral light ratios i.e. red:far-red, blue:red, green:red and blue:green have been analysed. The spectral light ratios changed at twilight and around noon at various depths. Some of the downward migrations were well predicted by Stokes' law, while other migrations were faster and deeper than calculated. The coincidence of these movements with abrupt changes in red:far-red, green:red and blue:green light ratios is discussed. Some species are able to migrate through the pycnocline, whereas others do not seem to be able to do so. Several species are present in maximum numbers at depth at night, while others display upward migration independent of light, suggesting the existence of endogenous rhythms. Upward migration at dusk began with dispersal of populations, with renewed aggregation at the sea surface coincident with an increase in the red:far-red ratio at 6 m and the green:red ratio at 6 and 10 m. Based on direct evidence for the control of flagellar mobility by light quality reported by other authors from laboratory studies, it is suggested that, together with other cues, spectral light ratios of different light qualities modulate vertical phytoplanktonic migration. A method is described for isolating high molecular weight DNA from somatic tissue of soft corals. The method avoids problems associated with the presence of nucleases, pigments and other secondary metabolites in soft corals. Tissue is frozen in liquid nitrogen, pulverized with a pestle and mortar, and the powder extracted with buffered sodium dodecyl sulphate at 4°C in the presence of phenol/chloroform. This technique has been applied toAlcyonium, Sinularia, Sarcophyton andLobophytum species. Repeated sequences have been cloned fromAlcyonium sp., and used to probe slot-blots of genomic DNA and Southern blots of restriction digests. Homologous repeated sequences were detected in threeAlcyonium sp., but not in threeSinularia sp., despite these genera being closely related.  相似文献

Summary The attraction of Old World leaf beetles in the genusAulacophora to kairomones and parakairomones which are effective lures for New WorldDiabrotica andAcalymma were investigated. Beetles captured on sticky traps baited with single and multicomponent lures were no different from the control traps for two species ofAulacophora. Yellow colored traps and squash blossoms are attractive toAulacophora beetles which detect sub-microgram quantities of cucurbitacins on silica gel. Leaf feeding behavior and flight activity data are correlated with varietal preference of threeAulacophora species. The common response byDiabrotica andAulacophora to cucurbitacins reinforces the two groups' coevolutionary association with the Cucurbitaceae. The apparent lack of a common response toCucurbita blossom volatiles suggests recent evolutionary pathways are substantially different for these two groups of beetles.  相似文献

The effect of light quality on growth, photosynthesis and carbon metabolism in two species of marine algae,Cyclotella nana (Hustedt) andDunaliella tertiolecta (Butcher), was examined. Relative growth constants forC. nana were 0.37, 0.29 and 0.25 in blue, white and green light, respectively. Corresponding constants were 0.41, 0.31 and 0.29 forD. tertiolecta. Photosynthetic rates in both species were higher in blue light and lower in green light compared with white light of the same intensity. More than 60% of14C assimilated byC. nana orD. tertiolecta grown in blue or green light was incorporated into the ethanol-insoluble fraction, compared with 10 to 30% in this fraction in white light. The relative importance of the various components within this fraction was independent of light quality. Although less14C was assimilated into the ethanol-soluble fraction in blue or green light, there was a relative increase in some amino acids and organic acids in this fraction and a decrease in sugars and sugar phosphates relative to white light of the same intensity. These differences were independent of light intensity, photosynthetic rate and cell density in the cultures.  相似文献

The south-western quarter of the North Sea (between the Wash and the River Tyne) has been investigated for the presence of dinoflagellates. Extensive net surveys were carried out in March, May and June 1971 and a number of other collections were made in the area. North of Flamborough Head, the spring bloom of diatoms was succeeded by a considerable growth of dinoflagellates, of which Dinophysis norvegica was the most abundant organism. Maximum counts of over 28 million dinoflagellates per m3 were recorded. Distribution charts are given for the most common species. A total of 61 species was found during the course of the survey.  相似文献

In situ phytoplankton sampling over 24h was carried out in July 1985 during part of a monitoring program established by the Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer (IFREMER) to survey the blooming of toxic dinoflagellates off the French coast. Analysis of the data suggested a vertical migration of Dinophysis sp. (acuminata?) populations through the sea-water column. These diurnal displacements should be taken into account in the course of monitoring surveys of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP). Culture assays which were performed in parallel remained unsuccessful. However, Dinophysis sp. survived in an enriched sea-water medium for 4 to 5 wk under low light intensity (8 to 10 W m-2) and constant temperature (16° to 18 °C). Cell ultrastructure, in pariticular the organization of chloroplasts, is described. All the combined results tend to confirm the photosynthetic capacity of this species.  相似文献
