The gelatinous house ofOikopleura labradoriensis (Tunicata, Appendicularia), collected from the docks of Friday Harbor Laboratories, University of Washington, USA, in 1984, 1986 and 1990, was examined in vivo by stereomicroscopy and strobe-light macrophotography, and after fixation and processing for light and electron microscopy. In addition to confirming previous knowledge and adding new information on structural organization of the oikopleurid house, this study presents quantitative data on important aspects of its function. Particles small enough to pass through the inlet filters (pore width ~13 µm) were concentrated between differently constructed upper and lower food-concentrating filters (pore widths 0.18 and 0.24 µm, respectively). These filtes were held together by an intermediary screen of widely separated ribbon-like filaments. Water sieved through the filters left the house through a pressure-regulated exit valve. However, the intermittent activity of the tail pump and the elasticity of the house caused frequent refluxes of water that cleared both inlet filters and foodconcentrating filter screens of adhering particles. During these refluxes the food-concentrating filters usually collapsed and compacted the trapped particles into coarser aggregates. With each pumping cycle the particles and aggregates were brought closer to the midline. From here they were periodically drained into the mouth of the organism through a medial food-collecting tube, to be recaptured in a pharyngeal feeding filter secreted by the organism's endostyle. Based on the size and movements of the tail within the close-fitting tail chamber, a water flow rate of ~0.84 ml min–1 was calculated for medium-sized houses (belonging to individuals with trunk length of ca. 1.2 mm). Taking the intermittent pumping activity of the tail into account, this equals ~35 ml h–1. Flow through the food-collecting tube was ~1 µl min–1, laminar and intermittent, and was probably comparable to a rate of ~0.04 ml h–1. Accordingly, the house allowed the oikopleurid to feed on a ca. 1000 × concentrated suspension of particles. Water speed through the meshes of the food-concentrating filters was ca. 0.15 mm min–1, or 2.5 µm s–1.  相似文献

Using a turtle-borne camera system, changing flipper beat frequency and amplitude were measured in five diving green turtles (Chelonia mydas Linnaeus 1758) in the Bahía de los Angeles, Mexico (28°58′N, 113°33′W). These observations were made between June and August 2002. Turtles worked hardest (i.e., had the highest flipper beat frequency and amplitude) at the start of descents when positive buoyancy is predicted to oppose their forward motion. During the later part of descents, turtles worked less hard in line with opposing buoyancy forces being reduced. For example, flipper beat frequency declined from about 60–80 beats min−1 at the start of descent to around 25–40 beats min−1 after 30 s of the descent. At the start of ascents the flipper beat frequency was around 30 beats min−1, lower than on descent, and declined as the ascent progressed with often passive gliding for the final few meters to the surface. This pattern of effort during diving appears to apply across a range of marine reptiles, birds and mammals suggesting that graded effort during descent and ascent is an optimum solution to minimising the cost of transport during diving.  相似文献

To elucidate the effects of temperature and algal cell concentration on pumping of water in the ascidian Ciona intestinalis a number of different experiments were performed. Beat frequency of the lateral cilia in the openings of the branchial sac was measured in intact specimens using a microprojection objective and a monochrome CCD video camera. At constant low algal cell concentration, beat frequencies increased linearly with temperature from 4.0 Hz (±0.5) at 7.4 °C to 13.6 Hz (±1.6) at 20.1 °C. At a constant temperature of 15 °C, beat frequency decreased with increasing algal cell concentration from approximately 3000 to >10 000 Rhodomonas sp. cells ml−1. The decrease was observed both in experiments where the ascidians had been acclimated to a fixed algal cell concentration and in experiments with changing concentrations. Effect of algal cell concentration on squirting/siphon closure and flow velocity in the exhalent siphon was measured using a thermistor. At low algal cell concentrations, flow velocity in the exhalent siphon was stable, apart from a few short squirts. At very high algal cell concentrations, the flow velocity was reduced and much less stable, with prolonged squirting. The effect of gut content on filtration was studied in experiments with specimens acclimated to high algal cell concentrations. Results showed a close relation between gut clearance and filtration rate. From the experimental results and a qualitative analysis of the Ciona-pump it was concluded that the ciliary beat frequency is proportional to the water flow through the sea squirt and that changes in pumping caused by temperature or algal cell concentration are under nervous control or governed by enzyme kinetics, rather than being a result of physico-mechanical properties, i.e. pump efficiency versus flow resistance, of the ascidian pump. The food-concentrating filter within the house of Oikopleura vanhoeffeni Lohmann consists of three layers, upper and lower fine-mesh layers and an intermediate coarse-mesh layer. The filter is a natural analogue of man-made tangential, or cross-flow, filters that are used to concentrate fine particulate and colloidal material by the exclusion of water. Flow analysis using video microscopy of O. vanhoeffeni, collected in 1989 and 1990 at Logy Bay, insular Newfoundland, indicates concentration of particles of 74 to 1089 times that of ambient seawater ( ,n=23), for individuals 1.8 to 5.4 mm long. The smallest individuals had the highest concentration factors. Flow through the house is predominately affected by viscous forces and values of Reynolds numbers are 1. Flow rates through the house of O. vanhoeffeni indicate a maximum filtration capacity of ca. 1.4 to 26 liters d-1 and clearance rates (assuming ca. 50% of the time is spent not actively pumping) of 0.7 to 13 liters d-1, depending on body size. The estimated thickness of the boundary layer around individual fibers of the food-concentrating filter is 0.08 m, which is less than the pore width. The estimated concentration factors suggest that colloidal and fine particulate material may aggregate into larger particles within the food-concentrating filter and food tube during feeding.  相似文献

Morphological, ecological, and behavioral aspects of filtration of small, inefficiently retained particles by benthic as well as planktonic filter-feeders are of current as well as historical interest. The exponential model applied to determination of filtration rate was originally conceived for filter-feeders clearing suspensions of large, efficiently retained cells. Therefore, applicability of this model and its assumptions to filtration of small, inefficiently retained particles merits critical re-examination. Derivation of the exponential model historically used in calculation of filtration rate is reviewed and shown to be inappropriate when filtration efficiency is less than 100%. Box models are constructed for filter-feeders that act either as sieves or aerosol filters in suspensions of small inefficiently filtered cells. The models predict a complex or double exponential decline in cell concentration that cannot easily be translated into filtering or pumping rates. The models further predict that apparent filtration rate will decline over time because of physical limitations, rather than behavioral changes, with respect to filtration efficiency. Compartmental analysis of filtration of inefficiently retained particles in a turbidostat system predicts a similar artifact in determination of filtration rate.  相似文献

Mine wastes and tailings are considered hazardous to human health because of their potential to generate large quantities of highly toxic emissions of particulate matter (PM). Human exposure to As and other trace metals in PM may occur via inhalation of airborne particulates or through ingestion of contaminated dust. This study describes a laboratory-based method for extracting PM2.5–10 (coarse) and PM2.5 (fine) particles from As-rich mine waste samples collected from an historical gold mining region in regional, Victoria, Australia. We also report on the trace metal and metalloid content of the coarse and fine fraction, with an emphasis on As as an element of potential concern. Laser diffraction analysis showed that the proportions of coarse and fine particles in the bulk samples ranged between 3.4–26.6 and 0.6–7.6 %, respectively. Arsenic concentrations were greater in the fine fraction (1680–26,100 mg kg?1) compared with the coarse fraction (1210–22,000 mg kg?1), and Co, Fe, Mn, Ni, Sb and Zn were found to be present in the fine fraction at levels around twice those occurring in the coarse. These results are of particular concern given that fine particles can accumulate in the human respiratory system. Our study demonstrates that mine wastes may be an important source of metal-enriched PM for mining communities.  相似文献

To determine the transfer of222Rn from domestic water into air, nine houses were measured for222Rnt, house volume, water use and air exchange by SF6 and radon. Measurements were done in Maine during April and May, 1986, when sealed up for the winter. Radon in water concentration ranged from 35,000 to 1,250,000 pCi/l. Air peaks of222Rn ranged from 13 to 200 pCi/l due to a water use burst experiment. Use of water filters was also examined by repeats with filters on and off. Water use ranged from 200 to 1922 litres/day. House volumes ranged from 380 to 999 m3. Air exchange rates measured by SF6 was twice as large as air exchange rate measured by222Rn.  相似文献

Aspergillosis is a widespread disease that has impacted the demography of the Caribbean sea fan coral, Gorgonia ventalina. The innate coral immune defenses can be measured as constitutive levels of immune proteins (peroxidase [POX], prophenoloxidase [PPO], lysozyme-like activity [LYS], exochitinase [EXOC]), antioxidant (superoxide dismutase [SOD]), and antimicrobial (antibacterial [AB] and antifungal [AF]) activity. Therefore, variations in these parameters across a geographic region could provide clues to the role of environment in disease. This study examined healthy sea fans collected in July 2005 from six offshore sites in the Florida Keys lying between 24.569°N and 25.220°N, a distance of ~145 km. Contrary to expectations, small (<15 cm) colonies did not differ significantly from large colonies (>15 cm) in the protein-based levels of activity in any of the measured parameters. However, there were significant differences in many of the parameters among sites, and Molasses Reef and Looe Key Reef were the most different in POX, PPO, SOD, and AF activity. This suggests that there are potential site-specific environmental factors that shape the immune physiology of colonies. Several proxies of environmental stress were also regressed against levels of the immune parameters. The proxies included 10 year averages of benthic community composition, 5 year averages of water quality, and historic aspergillosis disease prevalence and severity. Generality about environmental drivers was limited by assaying only six sites, but several patterns did emerge. SOD, EXOC, and AF activity were all correlated with percent bare substrate cover, suggesting that certain immune components may be activated in low coral environments. LYS and EXOC activity were positively correlated with dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), one proxy of water quality. There were no relationships between any of the measured immune parameters and previous disease prevalence and severity. This study is a first step in evaluating levels of within- and between-site variation in coral immunity and investigating possible environmental drivers.  相似文献

This paper describes a method which utilizes 14C-labelled glucose for measuring the assimilation and mineralization of dissolved organic compounds in the sea. Incubation is carried out in 500 ml conic flasks, in darkness, at a temperature similar to that of the in-situ sampling levels. Direct trapping of CO2 respired is performed in a scintillation vial, with an efficiency of 92% over a period of 4 h. The hyamin, utilized to trap the CO2, excites the scintillating liquid in the presence of CO2; the respiration data must then be corrected by a factor of 0.62. When HA Millipore filters are used for filtration, they quench assimilation values and the results must be corrected by a factor of 1.06. The reproducibility of the described method is good. Some parameters have been calculated: total heterotrophic activity, assimilation rate, respiration rate, bacterian yield, and the turn-over time of substrate in the water.  相似文献

Diadromous fish often enter freshwater directly from seawater via fish ladders or channels built in estuarine dams. The oxygen consumption rates (OCR) of glass eel, Anguilla japonica, were determined using an automatic intermittent flow respirometer under various salinity and temperature regimes to physiologically explain this direct movement. The endogenous rhythm of the OCR in wild glass eels, freshly collected from estuaries, was nearly synchronous with the tidal pattern at the estuarine collection site. When the salinity was changed from 20 psu (12°C) at a constant temperature to that of freshwater, the OCR of the glass eels decreased by 21.6±7.0% (mean ± SD) (P<0.05), showing a dampened rhythm for about 48 h. After this period of impediment, the glass eels resumed normal metabolic activity. Direct migration from seawater to freshwater under constant temperature would result in a severe physiological stress for these glass eels for about two days. When the glass eels were exposed to a cyclic change in water temperature of 2°C 26 h−1, as they encounter in estuaries, and then were introduced to freshwater abruptly, the OCR rhythm corresponded to the cyclic changes in water temperature after exposure to freshwater. Under these conditions, the mean OCR of the glass eels had a small difference before and after exposure to freshwater. These data explained how glass eels can directly move from sea water into the freshwater without any apparent metabolic stress in the estuaries showing cyclic change in water temperature (Δt=2°C).  相似文献

Brooding, embryonic and larval development, and the influence of environmental and biological factors in tidepool habitats were studied in the sea star, Anasterias minuta, at various sites along ~220 km of the Patagonian coast. This species has a benthic, lecithotrophic development that includes eight distinct developmental stages. A larval organ, the connection cord, is developed from a small preoral lobe at early stages of development and becomes larger and thinner at advanced stages. Fecundity and average egg size increased with female body size. The regression of log egg number to log sea-star size and weight at different sites had a slope significantly less than 3.0, resulting in negative allometry and indicating that brood capacity was limited in large females. Development was generally synchronous among sites, but varied within each brood at advanced stages, with more developed brooded larvae located at the periphery of the brood mass. Brooding was synchronous among various populations at different years and spatial scales, and extended over a period of 8 months. The highest proportion of brooding females occurred during May and June (austral winter). Juveniles were released mainly during September. The likelihood of finding brooding sea stars decreased with increasing sea water temperature, tidal height, and wave exposure, and increased with increasing body size. Both body size of brooding females and brooding rate were higher in the infralittoral fringe than at midlittoral levels. A revision of the current model of brooding behavior and development among forcipulate sea stars is given.  相似文献

Mytilus edulis L. (Bivalvia: Mollusca) can produce appreciable quantities of 3.4 to 5.4 m diameter bioseston, when previously fed on Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Tetraselmis suecica. Bioseston production, observed in flowing filtered sea water, is shown to originate from resuspension of faeces and can cause filtration-rate underestimates of up to 35% under certain experimental conditions. Feeding with Thalassiosira pseudonana below a concentration of 4x107 particles l-1 caused no significant bioseston production and this alga would, therefore, be suitable for use in quantitative estimates of filtration rate.  相似文献

The sea cucumber, Cucumaria frondosa, is a benthic suspension feeder that captures food particles on its tentacles and then inserts them into its mouth one at a time. Previous studies have suggested that tentacle insertion rate (TIR) could be a useful indicator of food intake. The present study determined whether flow velocity affects TIR and whether TIR is a good indicator of ingestion. Video observations of sea cucumbers in Passamaquoddy Bay (45°01.70N, 66°55.74W) in August 1995 showed that TIRs increased with velocities up to 55 cm s−1 and decreased steadily at flows above that up to 130 cm s−1. In October 2006, laboratory flume studies were carried out on specimens collected from the same site in the previous August. Temperature and salinity (12°C and 32) in the flume were the same as in the field at the time of collection. There was high individual variation in feeding behavior at free-stream velocities of 4–40 cm s−1 and TIR was independent of flow. As the number of tentacle insertions increased in the flume experiments, the amount of chloropigments in the digestive tracts of the sea cucumbers also increased. This suggests that TIR, which can be measured non-intrusively using remote video techniques, could be a good indicator of feeding behavior and ingestion in C. frondosa.  相似文献

It is generally thought that the laterofrontal cirri of the bivalve gill act as filters that retain suspended particles in the through current and transfer the particles onto the frontal surface of the gill filaments. In Mytilus edulis calculations indicated that if water passed between the branching cilia of the cirri that are assumed to constitute the filter the pressure drop needed would amount to about 10 times the actual pressure drop across the whole gill. Thus, instead of acting as filters the laterofrontal cirri seem to move water. Presumably, the cirri together with the frontal cilia produce the water currents along the frontal surface of the gill filaments. Particle retention in the bivalve gill implies the transfer of suspended particles from the current of water about to enter an interfilamentar space into a neighbouring frontal surface current. The complex three-dimensional pattern of flow that arises where the 2 systems of current meet is characterized by steep velocity gradients. Particles that enter such steep, steady velocity gradients become exposed to transverse forces that cause the particles to migrate perpendicularly to the direction of flow. Whether particles enter the surface current, i.e. are retained, or they stay within the through current andescape, depends primarily upon particle size, and upon the steepness and height of the gradients within the boundary zone between the surface current and through current. Further studies are needed to evaluate the capacities and relative importance of this hydromechanical particle-trapping mechanism in suspension feeding bivalves. It is suggested that in downstream particle-retaining systems, e.g. on the tentacles of polychaetes and entoprocts, velocity gradients between through currents and surface currents also act as the particle-collecting mechanism.  相似文献

Natural phytoplankton samples from the Gulf of California were incubated with radioactive bicarbonate or glucose, with or without the addition of gentamycin, a broad spectrum antibiotic which inhibits bacterial activity but has little effect on many algae. The relative distribution of chlorophyll and radioactivity in particles retained by filters of 3 and 0.45 μ mean pore size was measured. From 13 to 83% of the 14C-bicarbonate assimilated by natural populations appeared to be associated with organisms having a smallest dimension less than 3 μ. These were probably algae, since the distribution of chlorophyll on the filters was similar to that of the radioactivity. Furthermore, gentamycin treatment did not change the distribution of radioactivity from 14C-bicarbonate. In these waters, considerable photosynthesis may be carried out by ultra-nannoplankton (3 to 1 μ). Glucose was assimilated mainly by bacteria, of which more than 90% passed through 3 μ filters. Gentamycin significantly reduced glucose uptake in most cases. Although this method cannot be adopted uncritically for the estimation of carbon flux from photoautotrophs to heterotrophs, differential filtration can be used to elucidate the size distribution of various metabolic groups in the plankton.  相似文献

Bioerosion is one of the most important structuring forces in coral reef communities. The bioerosion impact of several species of fish, sponges and sea urchins have been estimated in the Caribbean; however, there is no information for one important species, the red sea urchin Echinometra viridis. This species can be found in high densities in many localities. In this study, bioerosion rates for E. viridis were estimated in two patch reefs off La Parguera, southwest Puerto Rico, using the population size-class distribution, average densities, and the CaCO 3 content in fecal pellets produced over 24 h. Average densities of urchins along four depth intervals were estimated using 40-m transect lines and 1-m 2 quadrats. Average size and size-structure distribution were estimated by measuring the diameter of 180–220 urchins haphazardly collected at each of the four depth intervals. The ignition–loss method was used to estimate the daily rate of bioerosion. Fecal pellets produced by the urchins over a 24 h period were collected in buckets, rinsed in fresh water, dried for 24 h at 70°C, and then burned in a furnace at 550°C, first to eliminate organics, and then at 1000°C until constant weight to determine the amount of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3) in the fecal pellets. HCl (10%) was then added to the remainder of the sample to test for presence of CaCO 3. Average individual CaCO 3 bioerosion rates were estimated at 0.181±0.104 g day -1. Average densities (0.77–62.0 ind. m -2), size (2.01–2.44 cm) and average bioerosion rates (0.114–4.14 kg m -2 year -1) were significantly higher in shallow areas (1–3 m) in both reefs. Bioerosion rates were low compared to those reported for parrotfish, endolithic sponges and the black sea urchin D. antillarum, but they were higher than those reported for other small-sized sea urchins in the Caribbean and the Indo-Pacific.  相似文献

The hexactinellid sponge Rhabdocalyptus dawsoni propagates electrical signals to arrest its feeding current in response to mechanical stimuli and sediment. The deepwater habitat of other species of glass sponge, and the difficulty of working with the tissue in vitro have so far prevented confirmation of electrical signaling in other members of the Class. Here we show in laboratory experiments (ex situ) that mechanical and sediment stimuli trigger immediate arrest in R. dawsoni and in a second species of hexactinellid, Aphrocallistes vastus, suggesting that rapid signaling may be a general feature of glass sponge tissue. Further, responses of the two species differed, suggestive of underlying physiological differences in the conduction system. R. dawsoni and A. vastus were sensitive to sediment but arrests were often prolonged in R. dawsoni, whereas in A. vastus pumping resumed immediately following each arrest. Fine sediment (<25 μm) caused immediate arrests in R. dawsoni and A. vastus, but with a higher stimulus threshold in A. vastus. Large amounts of sediment triggered repeated arrests in both species, and prolonged exposure to sediment (over 4 h) caused a gradual reduction in pumping, with recovery taking up to 25 h. During recovery, both species of sponge carried out repeated arrests, which had a precise periodicity indicative of pacemaker activity. Scanning electron microscopy of the tissue of these specimens showed many chambers were clogged. The results suggest that the glass sponge conduction system generates arrest of the feeding current that prevent uptake of small amounts of sediment, and that each species has different threshold sensitivities. However, ongoing exposure to sediment can clog the filtration apparatus.  相似文献

Common shrimp, Crangon crangon (L.), were exposed to inorganic arsenic (arsenate), trimethylarsine oxide, or arsenobetaine in sea water (100 μg As l−1) or in food (1 mg As g−1 wet wt) for up to 24 d, followed by 16 d depuration in clean sea water with undosed food, in order to determine the efficiency of uptake and retention of the compounds. Accumulation of arsenic in the tail muscle, gills, midgut gland, exoskeleton, and remaining tissues was found to depend on the chemical form of the arsenic and the route of exposure. No arsenic was accumulated by C. crangon exposed to arsenate or trimethylarsine oxide in sea water. Shrimps exposed to waterborne arsenobetaine initially accumulated a small amount of arsenic in their tail muscle and gills. After 16 d, C. crangon fed arsenate, trimethylarsine oxide, or arsenobetaine had accumulated arsenic in their tail muscle to levels ∼2-, 2-, or 40-times, respectively, that of the control group. A roughly linear rate of accumulation was shown by shrimps fed trimethylarsine oxide or arsenobetaine, but C. crangon fed arsenate accumulated arsenic for 16 d, then lost arsenic such that their concentration on Day 24 was not significantly different from that of the control group. Patterns of arsenic accumulation in the gills of shrimps fed the compounds were similar to those seen in the tail muscle. On a whole animal basis, C. crangon retained ∼1.2% of the arsenate, 1.6% of the trimethylarsine oxide, and 42% of the arsenobetaine consumed over the first 16 d of exposure, with roughly half present in the tail muscle in each case. Data obtained support the view that the direct uptake of arsenobetaine from sea water does not make a significant contribution to the relatively high concentrations of this compound in marine crustaceans, and that food is the primary source. Naturally occurring arsenic compounds in C. crangon and possible transformations of the administered arsenic compounds were examined by high performance liquid chromatography using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer as the arsenic-specific detector. Control C. crangon contained arsenobetaine as the major arsenic compound (>95% of total arsenic); tetramethylarsonium ion (0.7%) and an unknown arsenic compound (1.7%) were also present as minor constituents. Shrimp ingesting arsenobetaine accumulated it unchanged. Shrimp ingesting arsenate did not form methylated arsenic compounds; they appeared to contain their accumulated arsenic as unchanged arsenate only, although the possibility that some of the arsenic was reduced to arsenite could not be excluded.
