We examined the mating behaviour of the New Zealand ocypodid crab Macrophthalmus hirtipes in the laboratory between February and June 1998. This species has a discrete breeding season. Mating and moulting were not linked and only intermoult females with mobile gonopore opercula were attractive to males. Allometry and compatibility of gonopods and gonopores of different-sized crabs was investigated. Under laboratory conditions, the opercula of intermoult females remained mobile on average for 11.4 d, but the duration of receptivity did not appear to be under female control. The operational sex ratio in the laboratory fluctuated greatly, but was always male-dominated. During the period of opercular mobility, females mated many times with several different males. Matings in the absence of burrows were relatively short (mean duration = 23 min, max. = 122 min) and the mating behaviour of M. hirtipes lacked courtship and mate-guarding. Males used a search-intercept method to acquire mates, with very low levels of intrasexual competition. There was no evidence of mate preference in M. hirtipes, and males spent just as long mating with ovigerous females as with non-ovigerous ones. Although M. hirtipes has ventral-type spermathecae, as do several other ocypodid crabs, it is unclear whether this promotes last-male sperm precedence. The role of burrows in modifying the mating behaviour of M. hirtipes in the field remains to be established. Received: 7 January 2000 / Accepted: 5 June 2000  相似文献

In the field, the numbers of cystacanths of the parasitic acanthocephalan Profilicollis spp. harboured by crabs are relatively high and correlate with carapace width. In a field experiment, the responses of crabs to the simulated approach of a bird predator (the parasite's definitive host) was not influenced by the number of acanthocephalans they harboured. Crabs that were exposed at the surface of the sediments during receding high tide, however, tended to harbour more parasites than nearby crabs hidden in burrows. An analysis of colour patterns on the carapace of crabs showed that infection levels did not influence carapace pigmentation, and thus did not affect the conspicuousness of a crab relative to the background environment. However, the likelihood of a male crab winning a ritualized fight against a conspecific in the field was associated with its infection level, but in a way that suggests that this finding is a consequence of pathology rather than an adaptation of the parasite to increase its transmission rate. Although only weak evidence was found indicating that Profilicollis manipulates the behaviour or colour of its host to its own benefit, the high infection levels observed suggest that the crab population acts as a major reservoir for larval stages of this parasite that are infective to birds.  相似文献

Two behaviorally distinct forms — courtship signal — (Form L and V) of Macrophthalmus japonicus (De Haan) are known. Monthly samples of each form were collected from two areas in Japan: Form L from Amakusa, western Kyushu, between April 1985 and February 1986; Form V from Fukuoka, northern Kyushu, between November 1982 and December 1983. Life-history traits were compared between two populations and discussed. Individuals from the Amakusa population grew more slowly and matured at a smaller size than those from the Fukuoka population. Maturation period and longevity did not differ significantly. In the first year of reproduction, females in the Fukuoka population produced more, and larger broods than those in the Amakusa population and crab mortality was higher in every age group. Egg size did not differ significantly. The major environmental factors — air-temperature, nitrogen content of the surface mud and period of aerial exposure were similar in both areas, and it is suggested that the differences in life-history exhibited by these crabs are genotypic, and perhaps related to their different form.  相似文献

Interannual fluctuation of life-history traits in the mud crab Macrophthalmus japonicus (De Haan) was studied for a 7-yr period (1981 to 1987) in an intertidal mudflat in the estuary of the Tatara-Umi River, Fukuoka, Japan. Density of juveniles fluctuated greatly, and maximum annual density was low in 1981 to 1984 (22.0 to 44.0 m-2) and very high in 1985 to 1987 (98.5 to 188.6 m-2). In 1980, recruits may have been very few, though there is no data on or before 1980, because no crab of the 1980 cohort was found during the study period. Density of adult crabs was almost stable (11.0 to 32.6 m-2), perhaps because of density-dependent mortality. Under the high density conditions prevailing from 1985 to 1987 crabs grew slowly and longevity was shorter. Male chela and female abdomen were dwarfish, and females produced few and small broods. The changes of life-history traits under high density conditions were thought to result from strong intraspecific competition for space.  相似文献

Surface water samples were collected along the salinity gradient of Manko estuary in Okinawa, Japan, between January and November 2012, to examine spatial and temporal variability in the distribution, composition, behaviour, and sources of particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Concentrations of total particulate PAHs ranged from 169.7?ng?g?1 at riverine station (N1) in November 2012 to 922?ng?g?1 at another riverine station (K3) in May 2012. Based on observed environmental behaviour, particularly relationships to organic matter, the PAHs appear divisible into two groups: group I (low molecular weight) PAHs were characterised by low particles affinity and strong correlations with a pool of autochthonous organic matter (e.g. high concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids), reflecting processes controlling their delivery to the estuary; and, in contrast, group II (high molecular weight) PAHs were characterised by high particles affinity and exhibited estuarine distribution primarily controlled by suspended solid load and inputs from terrigenous sources through river inflows. This relationship, coupled with isomer ratios indicative of combined mixed sources from petroleum and petroleum combustions, indicates that terrestrial run-off is the dominant mode of delivery of particulate PAHs in the estuary. The relationships between distinct groups of PAHs and lipid biomarkers demonstrated in this study suggest that very specific pools of particulate organic matter, as opposed to concentrations of particulate organic carbon alone, can be important in the transport and fate of hydrophobic contaminants.  相似文献

It has recently been demonstrated that acute midultraviolet irradiation (UV-B, 290 to 320 nm) of the marine copepod Acartia clausii results in reduced survival and fecundity. In the present study, immature late copepodites were separted by sex and exposed to three UV-B exposure levels (0, 25, and 50 effectiveDNA Jm-2). The irradiated copepods were then reared to sexual maturity, and adult virgin survivors were mated according to prior exposure, supplying 7 different types of mating crosses (M0F0, M0F25, M25F0, M25F25, M0F50, M50F0, M50F50). Six replications of each cross were maintained for the duration of an experiment. Two experiments are documented. There was a significant effect of UV-B radiation on the survival of the parents as well as a reduction in the number of eggs and the number of living nauplii produced. For each experiment, 30 nauplii from each type of cross were separated, reared to maturity and counted, providing information on the survival capability of non-irradiated offspring from the 7 different mating types. Previous exposure of parental stock did not significantly affect the survival, and development to maturity, of these nauplii 15 d after separation.  相似文献

The distribution of the mud snails Hydrobia ventrosa (Montagu), H. neglecta Muus, and Potamopyrgus jenkinsi (Smith) was studied in the Kysing Fjord estuary, Denmark, from November 1977 to February 1979. The hydrobiids show habitat selection with regard to salinity but coexist in large areas of the estuary: P. jenkinsi at the innermost parts of the estuary together with H. ventrosa, with the latter species extending its distribution further to the mouth of the estuary, where H. neglecta dominates. H. ventrosa and H. neglecta are the only species that have permanent populations in the estuary. P. jenkinsi dies out in the estuary in the winter, but recolonizes there from a small river in the spring and builds up a population in the innermost parts of the estuary during the summer. H. ventrosa and H. neglecta coexist in the middle part of the estuary due to continued dispersal into this area.  相似文献

Sesarma leptosoma, somewhat similar to the Atlantic related species, Aratus pisonii, is an East-African mangrove crab which spends its entire life on the roots and branches of mangrove trees (mostly Rhizophora mucronata, Bruguiera gymnorhiza and Ceriops tagal). S. leptosoma never enters the water, nor does it ever venture onto the free mud surface at low tide. Part of the day and night it remains on the lower parts of the mangrove aerial roots, which are often encrusted with a wet algal mat of Bostrichia spp., searching for food and water. Twice a day, from ca. 06:00 to 08:00 hrs in the morning and 16:00 to 18:00 hrs in the afternoon, many of the crabs migrate as far as the leaves at the top of the tree on which they feed. However, they only spend a brief period among the leaves, from ca. 07:00 to 10:00 and 17:00 to 19:00 hrs, after which time they make their way back towards the roots again in two downward migrations. In the morning, the downward migration brings all the crabs back to the roots, but in the evening not all the crabs take part in the downwards migration and some of them pass the whole night in the tree tops. A comparison of the migration time patterns for two different periods of the year (June–July and November) shows that the number of crabs migrating along the tree trunk is modulated by the spring-neap tidal cycle, while the onset of daily migration seems to be controlled mostly by the light level and/or other climatological cues. The adaptive significance of this migratory behaviour is discussed. Observations reported in our study were made in Mida Creek, Dabaso, Kenya in 1991 and 1992.  相似文献

The behaviour of the Caribbean Corallianassa longiventris and the Mediterranean Pestarella tyrrhena, two burrowing thalassinideans, was studied in situ and in laboratory aquaria. Burrows of C. longiventris were closed most of the time; they consist of a deep U (down to 1.5 m) with upper and deeper chambers, some of them filled with macrophyte debris. The burrows of P. tyrrhena reached down to a maximum depth of 54 cm and consisted of a shallow U with a mound and a funnel, and a spiral shaft from which several, often debris-filled chambers branched off. The appearance of C. longiventris at the sediment surface to collect debris is strongly triggered by wave swell or odours from plant and animal juices; its burrows are opened within 10 min. The surface activity of P. tyrrhena was relatively less frequent and less predictable. Inside the burrows, both species exhibited different patterns of time allocated to 25 defined behavioural states. After being offered seagrass debris, P. tyrrhena spent relatively less time manipulating this debris, but it handled sediment more often than C. longiventris. During frequent mining events, both species showed sediment-sorting behaviour, which brought a parcel of sediment in close contact with the mouthparts; some of this sediment may be ingested because the fecal rods produced by both shrimps contain very fine sediment particles. Seagrass debris is irregularly tended by P. tyrrhena after its introduction into the chambers. Such material ultimately becomes buried. Corallianassa longiventris frequently returns to its debris chambers to pick up pieces of seagrass, which are subsequently cut with the chelae or ripped with the third maxilliped and then transported to another empty chamber nearby. Pieces become smaller with time and show curved cutting edges and bite marks. After 100 to 140 days, 2 to 6 g(dw) seagrass debris are consumed in this manner by individuals of this species. The debris-related behaviour of P. tyrrhena probably enriches the sediment around the burrow for stochastic encounters during later mining events. Such an indirect benefit may also be effective on a population level because other individuals may also encounter this buried nutrient source. Several aspects of buoyancy were studied in the normally pelagic eggs of the sciaenid fish Bairdiella icistia (Jordan and Gilbert). Spawning fish acclimated to a low salinity (15‰) produced larger, more buoyant eggs which had a higher water content than eggs produced by fish living in ordinary sea water (33‰ S). Eggs fertilized in lower salinities were larger and more buoyant than eggs fertilized in higher salinities. The salinity of the medium during the first 5 to 7 min after fertilization had a lasting effect on egg buoyancy, but subsequent transfer to a different salinity also influenced buoyancy. Although egg buoyancy in this species can be influenced by the ambient salinity both before and after spawning, the capacity for adjusting buoyancy is limited, and eggs spawned in salinities lower than 30‰ would probably sink.  相似文献

Summary Male giant waterbugs (Belostoma flumineum Say) brood eggs oviposited on their dorsa by conspecific females. Laboratory observations indicate that viable egg pads are occasionally discarded before hatching. Theory predicts that such behavior should occur only if the costs incurred by brooding exceed the benefits of hatching the egg pad. We studied the effects of egg pad size, time invested in brooding, and egg viability upon the continuation of paternal care in the giant waterbug. We found that smaller egg pads are less likely to hatch than larger ones, and males appear to be less likely to discard egg pads as temporal investment increases. However, the inviability of eggs did not appear to affect the probability of an egg pad being discarded. Males of this species appear to have evolved a decision-making process involving the continuation of paternal care. Offprint requests to: K.C. Kruse  相似文献

Nest concealment varies strongly within populations of many species. Although some studies have revealed the beneficial effects of concealment in mitigating predation pressure on nests, other studies were unable to find similar effects. One potential reason for the mixed results is that parental behaviour may compensate for the effects of nest cover, and specifically designed experimental studies are needed to reveal this compensation. I studied the effects of concealment on the probability of nest survival in the blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla), by experimentally manipulating the degree of nest-foliage cover. There was a significant effect of the treatment depending on nest type and the phase of nesting. Whereas there was no effect of concealment on nest survival in natural nests, there was a positive effect in real nests baited with plasticine clutches (i.e. without parental activity). Parents probably behaviourally compensated for poor concealment in natural nests (nest guarding, defence). In line with this, there was no effect of concealment on nest survival during incubation, whereas there was probably a positive effect in the nestling phase. Parents spent more time on the nest during incubation (80%) than during the care of nestlings (40%) and, consequently, had more opportunities to compensate for poor cover. In general, we cannot use single measures of behaviours or states (nest concealment) as an indication of predation risk because of the capacity for compensation in other behaviours.Communicated by C. The mouthparts of the Australian semaphore crabHeloecius cordiformis (H. Milne-Edwards, 1837) are described. Male and female semaphore crabs were observed and collected from mangrove swamps around the south side of Botany Bay, Australia between 1983 and 1987. Semaphore crabs inhabit mangrove mud/sand flats between the midlittoral intertidal zone and the supralittoral fringe of bordering saltflats. Scanning electron micrographs provide detailed pictures of mouthpart morphology and the setae present on the third, second, and first maxillipeds; the second and first maxillae; and the mandibles. Amongst other setal types, spoon-tipped, corn, and bottle-brush setae are described. While semaphore crabs are primarily deposit feeders (microphagous), they have well developed mandibles and are, therefore, also able to eat larger plant and animal material (macrophagous). A brief comparison is made between the mouthparts of semaphore crabs and fiddler crabs (Uca spp.), since the two genera are closely related, occupy similar niches, and resemble each other in appearance. This comparison reveals that while the second maxilliped setal morphology differs between the two genera (Heloecius possesses corn setae,Uca possesses spoontipped setae) these setae may have similar functions. The feeding behaviour ofH. cordiformis is related to substrate composition, burrow construction and various mouthpart specialisations. It is conlcuded that, within the context of the present study, certain structural e.g. mouthpart modifications allowing both scavenging and deposit feeding, and behavioural modifications e.g. mound building in wet muddy habitats, enable semaphore crabs to occupy a wide range of habitat types within the mangrove. Please address all correspondence and requests for reprints to Dr Maitland at his present address at the University of the Witwatersrand  相似文献

Temporal variation in the diet and chick growth of rhinoceros auklets (Cerorhinca monocerata), on Teuri Island, Sea of Japan, was studied to understand how local marine environmental changes affect the reproduction of this piscivorous seabird. The food delivered by parents to chicks was sampled every 1-2 weeks from late May to July, 1994-1998. Overall, the diet of nestling rhinoceros auklets consisted of (by mass) 61% Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus), 18% Japanese sand lance (Ammodytes personatus), 18% Japan Sea greenling (Pleurogrammus azonus), 2% other fish and 1% squid. Among years, the contribution of anchovy ranged from 16% to 93%. Once anchovy occurred in the diet, it dominated (80% on average) thereafter. Accordingly, when anchovy appeared in the diet early in the chick-rearing season (1994, 1998), the contribution of anchovy overall was large. The first appearance of anchovy in the diet of auklets late in the summer of 1997 was possibly related to negatively anomalous sea-surface temperature. Food loads composed of anchovy (34.0 g) were heavier than those of sand lance (22.5 g) and greenling (28.5 g). The energy density of anchovies also was higher: 6.3 kJ g-1 wet mass compared to 0+ greenling (4.78 kJ g-1) and 0+ sand lance (3.78 kJ g-1). Thus, a high proportion of anchovy in the diet resulted in high food load mass, high daily growth rates of chicks and high fledging success. This study highlighted the importance of the time of arrival of migratory high-lipid prey, which is influenced by local oceanographic conditions, to the reproductive performance of a piscivorous seabird.  相似文献

An aerobic sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) packed with Bauer rings was used to treat real domestic wastewater for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. The SBBR is advantageous for creating an anoxic condition, and the biofilm can absorb and store carbon for good nitrification and denitrification. An average concentration of oxygen ranging from 0.8 to 4.0 mg/L was proved very efficient for nitrification and denitrification. Volumetric loads of TN dropped dramatically and effluent TN concentration increased quickly when the concentration of average dissolved oxygen was more than 4.0 mg/L. The efficiency of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) increased with increasing thickness of the biofilm. The influent concentration hardly affected the TN removal efficiency, but the effluent TN increased with increasing influent concentration. It is suggested that a subsequence for denitrification be added or influent amount be decreased to meet effluent quality requirements. At optimum operating parameters, the TN removal efficiency of 74%–82% could be achieved.  相似文献

The seasonal behavior of both vegetative cells and cysts of dinophytes Scrippsiella spp., mostly S. trochoidea, which is the dominant group among dinoflagellate populations in Onagawa Bay on the northeastern coast of Honshu, Japan, was investigated between 1990 and 1992. The germination of the cysts after 8 d incubation under favorable laboratory conditions was examined using the extinction dilution method. Incessant germination occurred throughout the year, but the germination ratio (no. of germinable cysts/total cysts) varied seasonally with a marked fluctuation during summer when vegetative cells in the water column were abundant. Although such fluctuation largely reflects the variable flux of newly deposited immature cysts produced by the vegetative cells, the regulation of germination caused by a lowered saturation of dissolved oxygen (DO) under thermally stratified conditions was also suggested. During winter, while the cysts germinated in the laboratory, vegetative cells were not found in the water column. These facts suggest that germination in situ is regulated by low temperature in winter and possibly by lowered DO and by cyst age as well in summer. Such regulation prevents simultaneous germination of all the cysts, which is disadvantageous for the population because it would be more difficult to survive adverse conditions such as successive nutrient depletion and higher grazing risk.  相似文献

Chasmagnathus granulatus Dana, 1851 is an intertidal estuarine crab that experiences acute salinity changes ranging from <1‰ to full-strength seawater and even hypersaline waters in tide pools concentrated by evaporation. Ultrastructural changes induced by salinity in the posterior gills were examined in crabs collected from the Rio de la Plata estuary Argentina during March 1999. The posterior gills of C. granulatus are involved both in ion uptake and ion secretion depending on the acclimation medium. These organs are mostly lined with a thick tissue, which presents the characteristics of a typical salt-transporting epithelium. Electron microscopy analysis of gill tissue from crabs acclimated to dilute, full, and concentrated seawater (12‰, 34‰, and 45‰ salinity) showed significant development of basolateral membrane interdigitations, with numerous mitochondria and conspicuous apical membrane infoldings. Morphometrical analysis indicated that the subcuticular space delimited by the infolding of the apical membrane was significantly increased in the gills of high-salinity acclimated crabs. Septate junctions, which are thought to define the paracellular permeability, were significantly shorter in high-salinity acclimated crabs, suggesting a possible role of the paracellular pathway in salt secretion.  相似文献

Questions relating to oxygen extraction and hemolymph oxygen transport have been investigated in the burrowing shrimp Callianassa californiensis Dana. The relationship of oxygen consumption to oxygen tension was determined in intermolt and postmolt shrimp. Soft postmolt individuals had higher rates of oxygen consumption and a somewhat lower critical oxygen tension than intermolt specimens. Both oxygen-carrying capacity and hemocyanin content are somewhat lower in postmolt compared to intermolt shrimp. The measured gradient between postbranchial (pericardial sinus) and prebranchial (abdominal sinus) hemolymph oxygen content is small and highly variable, and is not affected by exposure to anoxic stress. Hemolymph pH and buffering capacity are high. The oxygen consumption-oxygen tension relationships and respiratory properties of the hemolymph are discussed in relation to the hypoxic environment associated with the habitat of these crustaceans.Supported in part by Institutional Sea Grant 04-3-158-4 and Public Health Service Grant HL 12326.Communicated by J.S. The activity patterns and use of space of the mangrove dweller Selatium elongatum were studied in the field, in combination with gut content analyses for evaluation of the crab's natural diet. This sesarmine crab proves to be one of the most adapted to climbing and living on mangroves. Moreover, S. elongatum showed a strong preference for being active at high tide, both during the day and night, always along the trunks a few centimetres above the water level, feeding on floating algae and mangrove leaves. Larger males were always recorded within activity areas into which they allow females and smaller males but exclude males of the same size, which probably compete for females. These results confirm that, in spite of the homogeneous herbivorous diet, little niche overlap exists among the several sesarmine crabs inhabiting the East African mangroves, all being leaf consumers segregated on the basis of their horizontal and vertical zonation, and/or of their activity rhythm.
