The cephalothorax length of the marine pelagic Copepoda Acartia clausi Giesbrecht, Temora longicornis (Müller), Centropages hamatus (Lilljeborg) and Pseudocalanus sp. was monitored at 15°C during prolonged cultivation through up to 55 filial generations and at different concentrations of food. The length of T. longicornis decreased considerably during the first 15 generations and remained rather constant thereafter. In the other species, body length increased slightly or remained almost constant. Genetic changes are probably involved. Food concentration influenced body size of all species, particularly C. hamatus, in which 80% of the natural size range may be explained by differences in food concentration. The idea that temperature is a dominant factor in determining the length of copepods should be reconsidered.  相似文献

The brine shrimp Artemia salina L. and the polychaete worm Ophryotrocha labronica La Greca and Bacci were acclimated in sea water with copper sulphate at concentrations of 0.1, 0.05, and 0.025 ppm Cu++, for 3 and 2 generations, respectively. Both adults and larvae of A. salina showed a greater tolerance to 1 ppm Cu++ after acclimation compared to controls of the same age, although this tolerance diminished in successive generations. The acclimation effect was less marked in O. labronica. In both species, tolerance to 10 ppm Cu++ upwards was not enhanced. Growth-rate inhibition and an adverse effect on reproduction was observed, in some instances in direct relationship to the acclimation concentration. It is suggested that, in A. salina, a certain tolerance to copper may be acquired through exposure to low concentrations.  相似文献

为探讨典型环境激素壬基酚(nonylphenol,NP)对枝角类浮游动物多刺裸腹溞连续世代的毒性效应,在实验室条件下,暴露连续3个世代(F0、F1、F2)多刺裸腹溞于0.02~0.10 mg·L-1的NP。15 d后测定成体死亡率、首胎繁殖时间、后代数目、成体蜕皮次数以及终点体长。研究结果表明,NP对F0代多刺裸腹溞具有很高的致死率;随着世代的增加,在相同NP质量浓度暴露下,与母代成体的死亡率相比,子代多刺裸腹溞成体的死亡率增高,致死毒性放大;NP对多刺裸腹溞连续3个世代的繁殖力都有显著抑制作用(P0.05),并随着世代递增,NP对子代繁殖力的抑制增强;在NP暴露下,多刺裸腹溞F0首胎繁殖时间明显推迟,NP暴露浓度与延迟程度呈正相关,呈现出剂量-效应关系,首胎繁殖时间延迟的趋势也存在于F1、F2世代中且存在放大效应;但是连续3个世代多刺裸腹溞成体的蜕皮次数都不受NP暴露影响;F0和F1世代多刺裸腹溞终点体长降低,并呈现明显的剂量-效应关系,但与F1相比,F2低浓度处理组受试个体终点体长呈增加趋势。对结果进行分析,认为多刺裸腹溞在NP暴露后的母代DNA或DNA完整性遭到破坏导致子代在相同NP质量浓度暴露下更容易受到NP致死性的影响;NP化合物具有的苯酚结构抑制枝角类体内葡萄糖、硫酸盐与类固醇的结合,从而引起体内荷尔蒙水平异常,最终对诸如生殖等生理行为造成不利影响;多刺裸腹溞成体的蜕皮次数都不受NP暴露影响表明蜕皮激素系统未受到干扰,且NP对生长的影响显然存在蜕皮外的其他作用机制。  相似文献

When reproductive success is constant in one breeding phase, different tactics that increase variation in reproductive success among individuals may evolve in other phases. For instance, in shorebirds, which usually have a limited clutch size of four eggs, variation in reproductive tactics among individuals is expected either before egg-laying (e.g. diverse mating systems) or after hatching of the young (e.g. diverse parental care). In this paper, I studied the pied avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta), a shorebird with a modal clutch size of four eggs, to test whether post-hatch chick adoption as an alternative tactic can be linked to increased variation in annual reproductive success. When predation was high, naturally adopting pairs produced more filial fledglings than did pairs not adopting chicks and not losing chicks to adoption. The number of filial fledglings increased with the number of adopted young, possibly through diluting the chances of predation on filial young. Experimental chick addition did not lead to more fledged young due to low brood integrity as shown by the frequent loss of chicks from some experimental broods. When predation was low, larger broods occupied feeding territories with higher prey abundance than smaller broods, possibly due to their dominance over smaller ones. Pairs that lost chicks to adoption (donors) fledged as many filial young in their broods as did non-adopters/non-donors, whereas the total number of donors’ filial fledglings, including those raised in adopting broods, approached that of adopters. These findings show, for the first time, that post-hatch alternative reproductive tactics can lead to variation in annual reproductive success and to higher success for some pairs even in species where past adaptations limit variation in reproductive success in a certain phase of reproduction.  相似文献

The cladoceran Diaphanosoma celebensis Stingelin is reported on for the first time from Indian waters (Mandovi estuary, Goa). Amictic females were maintained in the laboratory (temperature 24 ± 1 °C and salinity 17 psu) for three successive generations in order to follow the parthenogenetic reproductive behaviour, growth, survival and neonate production. The mean life span and body length of adult females in the three generations showed some variations and ranged from 9 to 12.5 d and 842 to 932 μm, respectively. The mean length of the neonates produced also varied (283 to 446 μm) in the three generations. Cladoceran preference for three phytoplankton food sources, i.e. Isochrysis galbana (Parke), Chaetoceros calcitrans (Paulsen) and Tetraselmis gracilis (Kylin), was determined. Growth was faster in the initial stage with all three diets but slowed down in later life. Increased food concentrations resulted in higher neonate production but reduced the life span of females. The multivoltine, estuarine amphipodGammarus lawrencianus has four generations per year in an environment where temperatures range seasonally from –1° to 25°C. Temperature-response curves for rates of brood production and development were determined by laboratory experiments and field observation. The life history and population dynamics were observed over a full annual cycle (1981) for a field population located at Rocky Run, Porter's Lake, Nova Scotia, Canada. On a natural (i.e., sidereal) time scale, the generations appear to have very different life histories: the two summer generations have short lives, rapid development and mature at small size (classicr-selection), whereas the overwintering generations have relatively low rates of mortality, slow development and mature at large size (classicK-selection). This pattern (larger size at maturity at lower temperatures) is widespread in aquatic poikilotherms. Similar life-history differences are evident among cohorts of the summer generations that mature at different temperatures. When time is expressed on a physiological scale that removes the effect of temperature on embryonic development and reproductive rate, the variation within and among generations is greatly reduced. In particular, an apparent alternation betweenr- andK-selection largely disappears. Because the generations are temporally isolated, it might be surmised that natural selection acting on the summer generations might antagonize the effects of natural selection acting on the fall and winter generations. However, the scaling of the rates of development, maturation, growth, reproduction and mortality on the physiological time scale derived from the temperature dependence of development and reproductive rate gives a very different and more homogeneous pattern.  相似文献

Theory of parental care evolution predicts that a parent should invest more in a brood when its fitness value is greater than alternative investments such as the parent's own survivorship or future broods. In fish, filial cannibalism (eating one's own offspring) is widespread and represents a challenge to parental care evolution. In this study, I investigated filial cannibalism in bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus). Bluegill are characterized by alternative mating tactics referred to as "parentals" and "cuckolders". Parentals delay maturation, construct nests, court females and provide sole parental care for the developing offspring. Cuckolders mature precociously and parasitize parentals using two tactics called "sneakers" and "satellites". I found that parentals that obtained fewer eggs during spawning appeared more likely to completely cannibalize their brood (total filial cannibalism: P=0.07), regardless of their condition. Among parentals that provided care, partial cannibalism was greater during the egg phase as compared to the fry phase of care, but it was unrelated to brood size. Throughout the care period, parentals in better condition were less likely to partially cannibalize their brood, indicating that parentals use cannibalism to replenish energy reserves. Independent of condition, parentals that were cuckolded more were more likely to eat part of their brood. This relationship was evident only after the eggs had hatched, which is consistent with data showing that parentals can use olfactory cues produced by fry but not eggs to assess their paternity. This latter result proposes that parentals may be selectively culling cuckolder offspring from their nest. These data provide empirical support for parental care theory, and the first evidence for the importance of paternity on cannibalistic behavior.Communicated by M. Abrahams  相似文献

A technique for preparing seawater suspensions of Kuwait oil and Corexit was developed. The resulting hydrocarbon concentrations were analysed by gas-chromatography and spectrofluorometric methods and the stability of the suspensions with time was determined. It was established that the suspensions have an effective stability from Days 3 to 15 after preparation, since in this period the concentration varies within a relatively narrow range. Adult female Tisbe bulbisetosa appeared to be quite tolerant of this type of hydrocarbon suspension, in short-term experiments, especially considering that the concentrations used in the bioassays were about 200 times higher than those measured in a relatively polluted area of the lagoon of Venice. Long-term effects on number of eggs produced, number of nauplii and hatching success for females of the third and fourth generations, subject to continuous exposure, were negligible compared with controls.  相似文献

Feeding dynamics of the Antarctic salps Ihlea racovitzai and Salpa thompsoni were studied in the Lazarev Sea in fall 2004, summer 2005–2006 and winter 2006. Pigment concentrations in the guts of both species were positively correlated with ambient surface chlorophyll a (chl a). No evidence was found for salp clogging even at dense surface concentrations of up to 7 μg chl a L−1. However, gut pigment concentrations had a lower range than ambient pigment concentrations, suggesting that salps increased retention times of ingested material in low-food environments. For medium-sized I. racovitzai and S. thompsoni, estimated individual daily rations reached 7–10 and >100% of body carbon in winter and summer, respectively. Daily respiratory needs of I. racovitzai and S. thompsoni accounted for 28 and 22% of daily carbon assimilation based on pigment ingestion rates in winter, and for 2 and 1% in summer, respectively. The grazing impact of the salp populations on the phytoplankton standing stock was negligible during all seasons due to generally low salp densities. Fatty acid trophic biomarkers in the salps suggest high year-round contributions of flagellates and modest contributions of diatoms to the salp’s diet. These markers showed low seasonal variability for I. racovitzai. The more pronounced seasonality of trophic markers in S. thompsoni were likely related to their generally deeper residence depth in winter linked to a seasonal alternation of sexual and asexual generations.  相似文献

This study tested experimentally whether clutch size and the cost of care affect filial cannibalism in the sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus. Evolutionary models of filial cannibalism suggest that egg eating has evolved as a way for the male parent to prolong his breeding season. These models assume that eggs function as an alternative energy source for the constrained parent. I manipulated clutch size by allowing males to mate with either one or two females, representing a small and a large clutch, respectively. The addition of a small male shore crab, a common egg predator, increased the cost of care. I quantified fat reserves as a measure of the condition of guarding males. Males who did not build nests had lower fat reserves than males who built nests, suggesting that males with low energy reserves do not start breeding. Males with small clutches lost their nest to the crab more often than males with large clutches. Neither filial cannibalism nor the amount of eggs eaten were affected by the treatments. Males who consumed eggs had a higher fat percentage than males who did not eat eggs. The result that males with small clutches lost their nests to the crabs supports the idea that eggs are defended only if the benefit from continued care will outweigh the cost and that males therefore are sensitive to the trade-off between present and future reproductive success. The toxic effects of an organophosphorous insecticide, monochrotophos (MCP) were investigated on Paramecium caudatum in static acute toxicity tests (10?min and 2?h). The lethal concentrations (50%) were determined by probit method, for technical monocrotophos as 60 and 40.6?mg?L?1, respectively. We have combined conventional light microscopy and a computerized video tracking system to determine behavioural and morphological changes in paramecium on exposure to MCP. Paramecia exposed to highest concentrations (90–100?mg?L?1) used for 10?min exposure, exhibited initial increase with subsequent decrease in mobility with enormous blebbing, leading to lysis of cells. In the second set of experiments, the cells exposed to lethal concentration (40.6?mg?L?1) for 2?h were under stress, and reduced their locomotor behaviour, i.e. distance travelled per unit time (mm in 6?min) and swimming speed (mm?s?1) with increased time of exposure. In the third set of experiments, the number of generations and generation time in 24?h was evaluated with respect to the different sub lethal concentrations (5, 10, 15 and 20?mg?L?1) of toxicant. The number of generations decreased and generation time extended significantly in a concentration dependent manner. The results indicate that the Paramecium toxicity assay could be used as a complimentary system to rapidly elucidate the cytotoxic potential of insecticides.  相似文献

Parental care is a costly part of reproduction. Hence, natural selection should favor males which avoid caring for unrelated young. However, the decision to abandon or reduce care requires cues which are evaluated to give information on potential reproductive value of the offspring. The prediction that male sand gobies, Pomatoschistus minutus, care for foreign eggs as long as they were spawned in their own nest and at least some of such cues are fulfilled was tested. Egg-guarding males that had recently taken part in a spawning event were given a clutch of eggs that was sired either by themselves or another male, in either their own or another male’s aquarium. Males that had not taken part in a spawning event were used as controls and were given eggs sired by another male. We measured the amount of filial cannibalism and nest building. Control group males did not care for eggs and ate them all before rebuilding the nest. In the other treatments, there were no significant effects of paternity, though males moved to another male’s aquarium increased their clutch area threshold and completely consumed larger clutches than males that were not moved. There was no intermediate response in any treatment in the form of increased partial filial cannibalism or less well-constructed nests. Our results suggest that egg-guarding males cannot distinguish between eggs sired by themselves and those sired by other males but are able to react to cues indicating paternity state. Males do not adopt eggs to attract females in P. minutus.  相似文献

Brood cycling, the alternation of periods of courtship and mating activity ("mating phase") with days of full brood care ("parental phase"), and total filial cannibalism, the consumption of all current offspring by a parent, have been interpreted as a response to the conflicting demands faced by parental males during the breeding season. Under the assumption that these two behaviours result from trade-offs among mating, caring and feeding, the strategy adopted by the male should depend on egg number and age. This hypothesis was tested in the scissors-tail sergeant (Abudefduf sexfasciatus), a common tropical damselfish. Observations of undisturbed males and a brood reduction experiment confirmed all theoretical predictions. The shift from the mating to parental phase occurred when an appropriate number of eggs had been obtained. When the brood was reduced on the first day of the parental phase, males often reverted to the mating phase, but never did so if the manipulation occurred on the second or third day. Only broods that were smaller than average were consumed by the parental male. Summary In a natural population, we document changes in the frequencies of alleles influencing body size and size-correlated alternative male reproductive tactics, and we examine the possible role of sexual selection in producing these changes. Male swordtails (Xiphophorus nigrensis, Rio Choy) exhibit three body size classes (small, intermediate, and large) that primarily derive from allelic variation (s, I, L) at the Y-linked pituitary (P) locus. Some XX individuals are male. They are small and can be fathered either by XX or XY males. We compared the frequencies of Y-linked P alleles across two generations in a natural population. There was a significant decrease in the Y-s genotype relative to Y-I and Y-L genotypes. Laboratory experiments suggest that the disadvantage of Y-s resulted, at least in part, from female preference for larger courting males relative to small chasing males. All larger courting males are of the Y-I or Y-L genotypes. Although the frequency of Y-linked P alleles changed across generations, there was no change in the distribution of male body size classes. The stability of the phenotypic distribution across generations, despite changes in P allele frequencies, was maintained by the production of small XX sons by Y-I and Y-L males. ABSTRACT

To determine whether grafting increases cadmium (Cd) accumulation in the post-grafting generation of hyperaccumulator plants, the effects of grafting on Cd accumulation characteristics of post-grafting generations of a potential Cd-hyperaccumulator Solanum photeinocarpum were evaluated in pot and field experiments. The following four grafting combinations were examined: ungrafted (UG), self-rooted grafting involving one S. photeinocarpum seedling (SG), self-rooted grafting involving two S. photeinocarpum seedling developmental stages (DG), and grafting on wild potato rootstock (PG). Grafting did not induce genetic changes in S. photeinocarpum, and increased the shoot biomass and the amount of Cd extracted by the shoots of the first, second, and third generations of S. photeinocarpum (PG > DG > SG > UG). Additionally, enhanced superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase activities and increased soluble protein contents of the first post-grafting generation were observed for the DG and PG, whereas only enhanced superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activities were observed for the SG. Grafting increased the DNA methylation levels by inducing hypermethylation in the first post-grafting generation (PG > DG > SG > UG). Therefore, grafting can enhance the Cd accumulation (phytoremediation) ability of post-grafting generations of S. photeinocarpum by enhancing DNA methylation levels, especially when wild potato rootstock is used.  相似文献

Monhystera disjuncta Bastian 1865 and Theristus pertenuis Bresslau and Schuubmans Stekhoven 1935 were cultured on sea-water agar in Boveri dishes at various temperatures. Generation time was measured as the period elapsing in two consecutive generations between the first egg deposit, the first hatching, or the first appearance of sexual characters. M. disjuncta has a generation time of 13 days at 17° to 22°C, 15 days at 13° to 15°C, 17 days at 9° to 12°C, 22 days at 7°C, 77 days at 0° to 2°C, and 135 days at -1° to 1°C. Low temperatures result sometimes in vivipary. T. pertenuis has a generation time of 23 days at 17° to 22°C, 41 days at 13° to 15°C, 47 days at 9° to 12°C, and 71 days at 7°C. M. disjuncta females live for up to 61 days at 17° to 22°C, T. pertenuis females up to 208 days at 7°C. Under North Sea temperature conditions, 17 generations of M. disjuncta and 7 generations of T. pertenuis could occur during the course of 1 year (calculation based upon experiments giving the shortest possible generation time). Females deposit eggs over a couple of days, therefore, the medium generation time is longer, and there will be fewer generations per year in the sea.  相似文献

The reproductive cycle of Limacina retroversa in the Argentine Sea was studied by gonadal analysis. Samples were collected in 1978–1979. The relation between gonadal maturity and size is dependent on the season and the geographical area. Evidence of in situ reproduction was found at the beginning of spring and at the end of summer, indicating that the life cycle in the area consists of two generations per year. In accordance with the season of birth, both generations develop different strategies. Individuals born in spring mature early and reproduce before the end of summer. The offspring born in summer survive the cold season without reaching sexual maturity and reproduce in the following spring.  相似文献

Although counterintuitive at first sight, filial cannibalism is common in the animal kingdom and has been recognized as a mechanism to increase the cannibalizing parent’s lifetime reproductive success. However, previous evidence is often inconclusive and the adaptiveness of filial cannibalism is still not fully understood. We here address the notion that parents do not cannibalize at random but preferably consume offspring with a particular phenotype. To assess if differences in developmental stage and thus reproductive value of eggs trigger such selectivity, we experimentally presented male common gobies (Pomatoschistus microps) with two differently aged egg clutches within mixed broods. We found that males consumed significantly more young than old eggs. This result indicates that parents are not only able to discriminate between eggs based on developmental stage, but might use this to reduce the cost of partial filial cannibalism by selectively removing eggs of lower reproductive value.  相似文献

Theoretical models predict that increased mate availability accelerates filial cannibalism by the parental male, but we do not yet fully understand how the various aspects of mate availability contribute to this effect. We examined the effects of two elements of mate availability—female fecundity and sex ratio—on filial cannibalism by the lizard goby, Rhinogobius flumineus, which is a paternal nest brooding fish. We used three types of females (stimulus-females): a single female with slim belly (not ready to spawn), a single gravid female (ready to spawn), and two gravid females. Stimulus-females were housed in a transparent cage and shown to subject males just before and after spawning with a separate female, after which males cared for the brood. A single gravid stimulus-female accelerated filial cannibalism, compared with a control-stimulus consisting of an empty cage, but only during the early care period. In contrast, a single slim-bellied stimulus-female did not accelerate cannibalism. A stimulus of two gravid females accelerated cannibalism to the same degree as a single gravid female stimulus. Our results suggest that in lizard gobies, filial cannibalism by parental males is accelerated by female quality (fecundity) in the early care period, but not by a higher number of available females (sex ratio).  相似文献

Recent theory and empirical work suggests that there may be variation among females in mate preferences that is adaptive. One of the possible mechanisms maintaining variability in preferences and preferred traits is that the benefits of mate choice may depend on compatibility with potential mating partners. We examined fitness consequences of mate choice in a species of fish, the sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus with a special focus on mate compatibility. Females were given the opportunity to establish their mate preferences in a dichotomous mate choice experiment. This information was then applied by mating the focal or control female with either the preferred or the non-preferred male. The parental performance of the males of these four mating combinations was then measured. In a separate experiment, we assessed the female differential allocation by determining the residual gonad weight of spawned females as a measure of the proportion of eggs spawned. We also estimated the amount of filial cannibalism separately for both sexes. Our results show that preferred males provided benefits in the form of an increased number of hatching eggs. This benefit was the same when the male was mated with a focal or a control female. Hence, we found no support for benefits that depend on mate compatibility. Neither did we find support for the hypothesis that females would lay a different number of eggs depending on the male status. The results also indicate that male filial cannibalism has a strong role in determining hatching success in this species.  相似文献
