About 17 years after the Chernobyl accident, lichen samples were collected in an alpine region in Austria (Bad Gastein), which was heavily contaminated by the Chernobyl fallout. Measured 137Cs activity concentrations in selected lichens (Cetraria islandica, Cetraria cucullata, and Cladonia arbuscula) ranged from 100 to 1100 Bq kg(-1) dry weight, depending on lichen species and sampling site. Ecological half-lives for 137Cs in different lichen samples, obtained by comparison with earlier measurements of the same lichen species at the same site, ranged from 2 to 6 years, with average values between 3 and 4 years. Comparison with earlier studies indicated that ecological half-lives hardly changed during the last 10 years, suggesting that ecological clearance mechanisms (e.g. washout or soil transfer) did not vary substantially at the selected sampling area.  相似文献

The contents of long-lived artificial radionuclides, 90Sr and 137Cs, were determined in lichens and mosses of different taxa and in the samples of moss–lichen cover taken from the mountain and lowland plant communities of the Northern Urals. The effects of Chernobyl fallout and the dynamics of radionuclide contents in lichens and mosses were analyzed. The concentration of 137Cs in the moss–lichen cover was higher in the mountain ecosystems than in the lowland plant communities.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to compare the 137Cs, 40K, 232Th, and 238U activity concentrations in epigeic moss (Hypnum cupressiforme) and lichen (Cladonia rangiformis). The activity levels in 37 moss and 38 lichen samples collected from the Marmara region of Turkey were measured using a gamma spectrometer equipped with a high purity germanium (HPGe) detector. The activity concentrations of 137Cs, 40K, 232Th, and 238U in the moss samples were found to be in the range of 0.36-8.13, 17.1-181.1, 1.51-6.17, and 0.87-6.70 Bq kg−1 respectively, while these values were below detection limit (BDL)-4.32, 16.6-240.0, 1.32-6.47, and BDL-3.57 Bq kg−1 respectively in lichen. The average moss/lichen activity ratios of 137Cs, 40K, 232Th, and 238U were found to be 1.32 ± 0.57, 2.79 ± 1.67, 2.11 ± 0.82, and 2.19 ± 1.02, respectively. Very low 137Cs concentrations were observed in moss and lichen samples compared to soil samples collected from the same locations in a previous study. Seasonal variations of the measured radionuclide activities were also examined in the three sampling stations.  相似文献

The activity concentrations of (237)Np and the two Pu isotopes, (239)Pu and (240)Pu, were determined in lichen samples (Cladonia stellaris) contaminated by fallout from atmospheric nuclear test explosions and the Chernobyl accident. The samples were collected at 18 locations in Sweden, from north to south, between 1986 and 1988 and analysed with high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS) and alpha spectrometry. Data on the activity ratios (238)Pu/(239+240)Pu and (134)Cs/(137)Cs measured previously were also included in this study for comparison. The (237)Np activity concentration ranged from 0.08 +/- 0.01 to 2.08 +/- 0.17 MBq kg(-1), depending on the location of the sampling site and time of collection. The (239+240)Pu activity concentration ranged from 0.09 +/- 0.01 to 4.09 +/- 0.15 Bq kg(-1), with the (240)Pu/(239)Pu atomic ratio ranging between 0.16 +/- 0.01 and 0.44 +/- 0.03, the higher ratios indicating a combination of weapons test fallout and Chernobyl fallout. The (237)Np/(239)Pu atomic ratios ranged between 0.06 +/- 0.01 and 0.42 +/- 0.04, the lower ratios indicating combination of weapons test fallout and Chernobyl fallout. At a well-defined sampling site at Lake Rogen (62.32 degrees N, 12.38 degrees E), additional lichen samples were collected between 1987 and 1998 to study the distribution of Np and Pu in different layers. The concentrations of the two elements follow each other quite well in the profile.  相似文献

Twenty-one years after the Chernobyl accident, lichen and moss samples were collected from the Ordu province, which was already chosen for a related study some years ago. It was observed that 137Cs activity concentration ranged from 31 to 469 Bq kg−1 in the moss and from 132 to 1508 Bq kg−1 in the lichen samples. The decrease of the activity concentrations in the present measurements (2007) relative to those in 1997 (over a period of 10 y) indicated ecological half-lives between 1.8 and 10.4 y for the moss and between 2.1 and 13.7 y for the lichen samples. It was observed that 137Cs was still eminent in the area studied. Moreover, 40K activity concentrations and K element concentrations were measured and their relationships were discussed.  相似文献

Samples of atmospheric particulate material and terrestrial plants, including lichens, were collected in New Brunswick, Canada between 1980 and 1983 and analyzed for a wide range of artificial and naturally-occuring radionuclides, including fission products (141Ce, 144Ce, 103Ru, 106Ru, 95Zr and 137Cs) derived from the 16 October 1980 Chinese nuclear test. Activity ratios of some of the short-lived fission products in air particulates and lichens are in reasonable agreement with those predicted from fission product yields for nuclear weapons tests, indicating that only minor fractionation occurred for these radionuclides during their transport through air particulate and lichen environmental phases. The 7Be inventories measured in a suite of lichen (Cladonia rangiferina) samples were used to calibrate each lichen plant for its collection efficiency for atmospheric particulates and fallout radioactivity.A lichen model has been developed to predict lichen inventories of radioactivity for different lichen growth functions and bio-elimination rates. Assuming that lichen growth results in a linear increase in surface area with time, the experimental results yield biological residence times of 1–2 years for 210Pb and Pu and 5–8 years for 137Cs. The more efficient retention of 137Cs is probably due to its physiological uptake in lichen plants as a proxy for potassium, as evidenced by an observed, inverse relationship between 137Cs and 40K activities in lichen.  相似文献

Concentrations of the anthropogenic 137Cs and 239,240Pu in surface water of the Sea of Japan were in the ranges of 2·7–3·8 mBq l-1 and 1·3–8·0 μBq l-1, respectively, in 1993–1994, which are in the same order of magnitude as those in the North Pacific. The time-series data indicated a marked increase of surface 137Cs in 1986 and 1987 after the major radioactive dumping and the Chernobyl fallout in 1986 and then rapidly decreased thereafter. The apparent half-residence time of 137Cs in the surface water was estimated to be about 3 years for excess 137Cs and 16 years for a rather long time-scale transport, respectively. For 239,240Pu in the surface water, no systematic temporal variation was observed over the past two decades, which may reflect rapid recycling of deeper Pu. The results revealed that most of the recent radioactivity in water columns of the Sea of Japan was of global fallout origin from atmospheric nuclear testing and partly the Chernobyl fallout. No clear signal about the effect of radioactivity from Russian dumping was observed.  相似文献

It was recently reported that radioactive fallout due to the Fukushima Nuclear Accident was detected in environmental samples collected in the USA and Greece, which are very far away from Japan. In April-May 2011, fallout radionuclides (134Cs, 137Cs, 131I) released in the Fukushima Nuclear Accident were detected in environmental samples at the city of Krasnoyarsk (Russia), situated in the center of Asia. Similar maximum levels of 131I and 137Cs/134Cs and 131I/137Cs ratios in water samples collected in Russia and Greece suggest the high-velocity movement of the radioactive contamination from the Fukushima Nuclear Accident and the global effects of this accident, similar to those caused by the Chernobyl accident.  相似文献

Using radioactivity measurements for 131I and 137Cs and nuclear activation analysis (NAA) or accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) for 129I, ratios of 131I/137Cs and 129I/137Cs have been determined in soils from Belarus. We find that the pre-Chernobyl ratio of 129I/137Cs in Belarus is significantly larger than expected from nuclear weapons fallout. For the Chernobyl accident, our results support the hypothesis that there was relatively little fractionation of iodine and caesium during migration and deposition of the radioactive cloud. For sites having 137Cs > 300 Bq/kg, 129I can potentially give more reliable retroactive estimates of Chernobyl 131I deposition. However, our results suggest that 137Cs can also give reasonably good (+/-50%) estimates for 131I in Belarus.  相似文献

Our basic knowledge of the radiological impact of fallout from nuclear accidents is based on the experience gained from the study of nuclear weapons fallout. Radioecologically, the most important radionuclides generated by the Chernobyl accident were 137Cs, 134Cs, 131I and, to a lesser degree, 90Sr. These nuclides are well known from global fallout, although in different relative amounts to those observed in the Chernobyl debris. Another important difference between the fallout from Chernobyl and that from nuclear weapon tests is that their seasonal and geographical distributions were quite dissimilar. A number of examples show how these differences influenced transfer factors and thus population doses. Special emphasis is paid to the contamination of milk and cereal products.Furthermore, it is shown how the composition of the Chernobyl debris changed with distance from Chernobyl, due to the differences in volatility of the various radionuclides involved. Finally, the paper compares the dose equivalents received from unit releases (1 P Bq 137Cs) of global fallout and of Chernobyl accident debris.  相似文献

The aims of the present research are to describe the amounts, and the variation with time, of 134Cs and 137Cs in spruce-twigs (P. abies karst.) and in the soil of a spruce forest in Switzerland following deposition of the Chernobyl fallout. The activity of the twigs was subdivided into 3 compartments: the activity on their surfaces (i.e. the activity which can be removed from the twigs along with their natural wax coating), the activity incorporated into the needles and, finally, the activity incorporated into the wood. These compartments were separately sampled 6 times over a period from 54 to 233 days after the Chernobyl incident. Twigs which sprouted in two successive years (1985, 1986) were sampled and were found to show different behaviours. The activities associated with the 1986 twigs were roughly constant with time, while those of the 1985 twigs decreased exponentially, with half-lives around 150 days. The mean activity associated with 1 g (dry) of 1985 twigs is 724 mBq 137Cs g−1, of which 58% is incorporated into the twig wood, 17% into the needles and 25% associated with the adhering aerosol. 137Cs on the surface of the needles was found to be water-insoluble. It is believed to be strongly adsorbed on to the soil-derived fraction of the aerosol residing on the needle surface and thus provides a tracer for studying the behaviour of natural aerosols on such surfaces. The same soil profile was measured before and after the Chernobyl incident, allowing direct comparison between nuclear weapons and Chernobyl fallout. The latter is mainly (56%) stored in the litter layer, with only 4% below a depth of 13 cm; it has penetrated into the soil to a much lesser extent than weapons fallout. The forest soil inventory of 137Cs showed 2600 Bq m−2 from nuclear weapons fallout and 6200 Bq m−2 from Chernobyl. The 134Cs/137Cs activity ratio of the Chernobyl fallout was found to be 0·58 ± 0·01; the activity ratios in the different compartments investigated prove that incorporation of Cs into spruce occurred exclusively by uptake through the needles. A rough estimate indicates that in a spruce forest the activity stored in the twigs is half that stored in the soil.  相似文献

An analysis of sporocarps of ectomycorrhizal fungi Suillus variegatus assessed whether cesium (133Cs and 137Cs) uptake was correlated with potassium (K) or rubidium (Rb) uptake. The question was whether intraspecific correlations of Rb, K and 133Cs mass concentrations with 137Cs activity concentrations in sporocarps were higher within, rather than among, different fungal species, and if genotypic origin of sporocarps within a population affected uptake and correlation. Sporocarps (n = 51) from a Swedish forest population affected by the fallout after the Chernobyl accident were studied. The concentrations were 31.9 ± 6.79 g kg−1 for K (mean ± SD, dwt), 0.40 ± 0.09 g kg−1 for Rb, 8.7 ± 4.36 mg kg−1 for 133Cs and 63.7 ± 24.2 kBq kg−1 for 137Cs. The mass concentrations of 133Cs correlated with 137Cs activity concentrations (r = 0.61). There was correlation between both 133Cs concentrations (r = 0.75) and 137Cs activity concentrations (r = 0.44) and Rb, but the 137Cs/133Cs isotopic ratio negatively correlated with Rb concentration. Concentrations of K and Rb were weakly correlated (r = 0.51). The 133Cs mass concentrations, 137Cs activity concentrations and 137Cs/133Cs isotopic ratios did not correlate with K concentrations. No differences between, within or, among genotypes in S. variegatus were found. This suggested the relationships between K, Rb, 133Cs and 137Cs in sporocarps of S. variegatus is similar to other fungal species.  相似文献

In the metropolitan New York area, maximum concentrations in air of radioactive aerosol and gaseous debris from the Chernobyl accident of April 1986 were much lower than those measured in Europe. The observed maxima were: for gaseous 131I, 23mBq m−3; for aerosol samples, 20mBq m−3 of 131I and 9·mBq m−3 of 137Cs. The data suggest that little gas-to-particle transformation of iodine occurred during transport of the radioactive cloud from the Ukraine to New York. The ratios of 103Ru and other refractories to 137Cs were low in the first debris sampled, debris which probably was emitted from Chernobyl in late April during the early stages of the accident. In subsequent samples these ratios were higher, presumably because debris from the later, hotter stages of the fire had reached our sampling sites. A significant fraction (25–40%) of the deposition of 131I and 137Cs into our samplers and on grass was by dry deposition. The total deposition of Chernobyl 137Cs in the area was <1% of that already present in the soil from fallout from past nuclear weapon tests. The highest concentration of 131I measured in fresh milk was about 1.5 B1 liter−1, <0.1% of the US action level. The dose to the thyroid of a six-month-old infant who had fresh milk as a sole food source would be about 70 μGy (7 mrad).  相似文献

Establishment of 137Cs inventories is often used to gain information on soil stability. The latter is crucial in mountain systems, where ecosystem stability is tightly connected to soil stability. In-situ measurements of 137Cs in steep alpine environments are scarce. Most studies have been carried out in arable lands and with Germanium (Ge) detectors. Sodium Iodide (NaI) detector system is an inexpensive and easy to handle field instrument, but its validity on steep alpine environments has not been tested yet. In this study, a comparison of laboratory measurements with GeLi detector and in-situ measurements with NaI detector of 137Cs gamma soil radiation has been done in an alpine catchment with high 137Cs concentration (Urseren Valley, Switzerland). The aim of this study was to calibrate the in-situ NaI detector system for application on steep alpine slopes. Replicate samples from an altitudinal transect through the Urseren Valley, measured in the laboratory with a GeLi detector, showed a large variability in 137Cs activities at a meter scale. This small-scale heterogeneity determined with the GeLi detector is smoothed out by uncollimated in-situ measurements with the NaI detector, which provides integrated estimates of 137Cs within the field of view (3.1 m2) of each measurement. There was no dependency of 137Cs on pH, clay content and carbon content, but a close relationship was determined between measured 137Cs activities and soil moisture. Thus, in-situ data must be corrected for soil moisture. Close correlation (R2 = 0.86, p < 0.0001) was found for 137Cs activities (in Bq kg−1) estimated with in-situ (NaI detector) and laboratory (GeLi detector) methods. We thus concluded that the NaI detector system is a suitable tool for in-situ measurements in alpine environments. This paper describes the calibration of the NaI detector system for field application under elevated 137Cs activities originating from Chernobyl fallout.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to establish a reference site and its soil characteristics for use of fallout radionuclides in erosion studies in Slovenia. Prior to this study, no reference site and baseline data existed for Slovenia for this purpose. In the agricultural area of Gori?ko in East Slovenia, an undisturbed forest situated in Šalamenci (46°44’N, 16°7’E), was selected to establish the inventory value of fallout 137Cs and to establish a baseline level of multi-elemental fingerprint (major, minor, trace elements including heavy metals) and naturally occurring radionuclides in soils. A total of 20 soil profiles were collected at four 10 cm depth increments for evaluation of baseline level of 137Cs inventory. An exponential distribution for 137Cs was found and the baseline level inventory was established at 7300 ± 2500 Bq m−2 with a coefficient of variation of 34%. Of this mean present-day inventory, approximately 45% is due to the Chernobyl contribution. The physical degradation of soils through erosion is linked with biochemical degradation. This study introduces an approach to establishment of the naturally occurring radionuclide and elemental fingerprints baseline levels at a reference site which can provide comparative data to those from neighbouring agricultural fields for assessment of soil redistribution magnitude using fallout radionuclides. In addition, this information will be used to determine the impact of soil erosion processes and agricultural practices on soil quality and redistribution within agricultural landscapes in Slovenia.  相似文献

Radioactive plumes from the Chernobyl reactor accident first passed over Japan on 3 May 1986. Measurements of 103Ru, 131I and 137Cs in rainfall and airborne dust collected at Chiba near Tokyo show that, in fact, at least two or more kinds of plume arrived during May. Their altitudes were calculated to be about 1500 m in early May and 6300 m in late May.Radionuclides detected in 33 precipitation samples collected by the network of prefectural radiation monitoring stations from 1 to 22 May were 7Be, 89Sr, 95Sr, 95Zr, 95Nb, 103Ru, 106Ru, 110mAg, 125Sb, 129mTe, 131I, 132Te, 132I, 134Cs, 136Cs, 137Cs, 140Ba, 140La, 141Ce and 144Ce, the measurements being made using germanium detectors and low-background GM counters after radiochemical separation. The radiation was characterized by higher levels of the volatile nuclides, such as 103Ru (in the form of RuO2), 132Te, 131I and 137Cs, than fallout levels in nuclear weapons testing, and by activity ratios of 0·48 and 14 for, respectively, 134Cs/137Cs and 89Sr/90Sr, as on 26 April. The fallout activity was higher in northwestern Japan, the average depositions of 90Sr and 137Cs in Japan from 1 May (or 30 April) to 22 May being 1·4 Bq m−2 and 95 Bq m−2, inventories which are 14 and 550 times higher than the pre-Chernobyl values.  相似文献

We summarize the patterns of 137Cs activity concentrations and transfer into fish and other biota in four small forest lakes in southern Finland during a twenty-year period following the Chernobyl accident in April 1986. The results from summer 1986 showed fastest accumulation of 137Cs into planktivorous fishes, i.e. along the shortest food chains. Since 1987, the highest annual mean values of 137Cs have been recorded in fish occupying the highest trophic levels, for perch (Perca fluviatilis) 13,600 Bq/kg (ww) and for pike (Esox lucius) 20,700 Bq/kg (ww). At the same time, activity concentrations of 137Cs in crustacean zooplankton and Asellus aquaticus have ranged between 1000 and 19,500 Bq/kg (dw). In 2006, 5-28% of the 1987 137Cs activity concentration levels were still present in perch and pike. Since 1989 their 137Cs activity concentrations in oligohumic seepage lakes have remained significantly higher than in polyhumic drainage lakes due to the increased transfer of 137Cs into fish in the seepage lakes with lower electrolyte concentrations, longer water retention times and lower sedimentation rate.  相似文献

The radiological status of the Greek marine environment, prior to the Chernobyl accident, was characterized mainly by the fallout from nuclear weapon tests. However, the release of radioactivity into the environment from the accident in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and its deposition in the Greek marine environment resulted in an increase of the 137Cs activity concentration by approximately one order of magnitude. In addition, the direct transport of radiocaesium into the North Aegean Sea has been further influenced by the late impact of the Chernobyl accident on the Greek marine environment, related to the transfer of 137Cs, mainly through the Dnieper but also the Danube rivers, to the Black Sea and further to the North Aegean Sea through the Straits of Dardanelles. The aim of this work is to provide a present day picture of the geographic variation of the concentration of 137Cs in the surface layer of the Greek marine environment and hence, to evaluate the annual committed effective dose delivered to humans through the ingestion pathway from marine sources.  相似文献

In this paper a compartment model of the highly vulnerable Arctic terrestrial food chain "lichen-reindeer-man" is outlined. Based upon an analysis of measured (137)Cs and (90)Sr contents in lichen and reindeer meat from 1961 up to 2001, site specific model parameters for two regions in north-western Arctic Russia and for Kautokeino municipality in Arctic Norway have been determined. The dynamics of radionuclide activity concentrations in the "lichen-reindeer-man" food chain for all areas was satisfactorily described by a double exponential function with short-term and long-term effective ecological half-lives between 1-2 and 10-12 years, respectively, for both (137)Cs and (90)Sr. Using parameter values derived from the model, life-time internal effective doses due to consumption of reindeer meat by reindeer-breeders after an assumed single pulse deposit of 1 kBq m(-2) of (137)Cs were estimated to be 11.4 mSv (Kola Peninsula), 5 mSv (Nenets Autonomous Area), and 2 mSv (Kautokeino, Norway). Differences in vulnerability to radiocaesium deposition were due to differences in transfer between lichen and reindeer and in diet between the three regions.  相似文献
