This paper presents a new perspective on the reuse businesses of independent reuse business companies (IRBCs) in Japan. A majority of previous studies on reuse and remanufacturing have focused on the businesses of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). During the past twenty years, however, in Japan, IRBCs have grown rapidly, especially those that launched new types of secondhand shops. The author proposes that the reuse businesses of IRBCs can provide useful information for academics, OEMs, and policy makers. A key finding is the strategies developed by IRBCs to ensure the volume of used products collected and to stimulate demand for used products. This paper compares the features of IRBC reuse businesses with those of OEMs, and discussed the results and implications of an interview survey with select IRBCs. 相似文献

Conventional measures aimed at tackling the energy and waste issues of island communities focus on technological solutions, such as the introduction of renewable energy sources. There exists a history of technology implementations on small islands that have failed because of a lack of continuing skills and financial resources needed for ongoing operation and maintenance. Despite these experiences, what has received little attention so far are measures aimed at achieving island-friendly solutions by reducing their material metabolism, for example, by recycling and re-use. The two case studies presented in this work show that conservation, efficiency and reductions of the overall material metabolism of economic activity can be as effective as purely technologically driven changes. Both case studies demonstrate exceptional sustainability performance in terms of material flow and greenhouse gas emissions. The income growth scenarios show that – from a sustainability point of view – increasing tourist yield rather than tourist numbers is preferable for coping with price hikes and a finite resource base, and is also more likely to keep within bounds the strain on the island's people and infrastructure. 相似文献

This paper reports on research that investigated and implemented benchmarking as a trigger for cleaner production in the drycleaning industry in Western Australia and applies this knowledge to the small business sector. The critical success factors for environmental benchmarking are: identifying cleaner production gaps in areas important to the long-term future of the businesses, promoting the drivers to close the performance gaps, and ensuring managers possess the correct skills to close these gaps. The participants accepted the benchmarks as suitable targets and committed their businesses to achieving these targets in their action plans. Economic benefits and maintaining their licence to operate were found to be the important drivers. Program participants on average reduced hazardous waste generation by 48%, perchlorethylene consumption by 30% and improved their energy efficiency by 9%. Furthermore, managers involved in the program had a significantly higher uptake of cleaner production than the general small business community in Western Australia. 相似文献

The paper shows implementation of in-plant control measures in two pasta plants and conducts economic analysis for revenues from these modifications. In order to reuse wastewater, 12 end-of-pipe samples for each plant were tested for physico-chemical characteristics using standard methods. The results showed that the adopted in-plant modifications such as installation of water flow meters, spring valves on water hoses, and design of a steam condensate recovery system contributed efficiently in saving water and energy consumption throughout the pasta plants. An estimated annual benefit of $228,245 can be achieved. Cost benefit analysis for the implemented environmental improvements proved to be very economic with a short payback period and resulted in great savings. 相似文献

实验研究了填充新型无剩余污泥悬浮型生物滤料的曝气生物滤池处理养殖废水的挂膜情况及水力停留时间(HRT)变化对曝气生物滤池处理效果及运行特性的影响。结果表明,含氨氮和亚硝酸氮浓度较高的模拟养殖污水用活性污泥挂膜,大约1个月就能使生物滤池启动。当模拟养殖污水氨氮起始浓度在2mg/L左右时最佳水力停留时间(HRT)为0.6h循环6d能使氨氮浓度降到0.03mg/L左右,亚硝酸氮有短期积累问题,但最终都能被降到0.05mg/L以下。水力停留时间影响氨氮的去除时间,从而影响亚硝酸氮的积累。水力停留时间(HRT)对有机物(CODMn)去除影响不大,且该种滤料对有机物(CODMn)去除效果较差,去除率在28%左右。 相似文献

研制了一种新型环境测试舱,此舱系统可用于研究室内材料中挥发性有机物(VOCs)释放特征和释放机理。详细介绍舱的设计,讨论舱系统的优缺点,并对舱的性能进行评价测试。结果表明,温度和相对湿度的准确性分别为≤0.5℃和≤3.1%,空气混合水平达到92.9%,回收率达到85.2%。根据回收率实验结果,用经验模型和VB模型模拟对二氯苯(p-DCB)释放,模拟结果与实测值吻合很好。 相似文献

The environmental and social impact derived from treated wastewater reuse is an intrinsically complex multidimensional process, which involves multiple criteria and multiple stakeholders. This paper presents the use of multicriteria decision through the TOPSIS method, applied to six different methodologies concerning the disinfection of treated wastewater before reusing. Results have shown that the best disinfection technique for treated wastewater has been chlorination with 4 ppm, if this water is to be destined to an urban, agricultural or industrial use, due to a large weight given to cost and environmental criteria. Conversely, in recreational and environmental uses, the alternative of ultraviolet light disinfection was the chosen alternative. Economic criteria showed priority in the most entrepreneurial uses of the water, although social and political cost had a greater weight in the case of environmental or recreational uses. The inclusion of environmental and social assessment in the disinfection technique decision support clearly provides a cleaner and more sustainable production. 相似文献

Improving the quantification of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from agricultural land has become an issue of major concern due to its strong contribution to the greenhouse effect and to the fact that N2O is now the most significant ozone-depleting emission to the atmosphere. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of a new field-scale, simple and empirical model that simulates monthly nitrogen (N) flows in cropping systems based on site characteristics and management practices. We explored its sensitivity for a Basque region of Spain growing winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under humid Mediterranean conditions to varied weather conditions and different scenarios of: (i) fertiliser rates, (ii) soil texture, (iii) organic/mineral fertilisation, (iv) slurry injection/no injection and (v) tillage/no tillage. The model showed sensitivity to most of the changes in the tested parameters. On average, simulated N2O emissions decreased: (i) with the decrease in N fertiliser rates, (ii) in lighter textured soils, (iii) with organic fertilisation, (iv) after non-injecting slurry and (v) under no-tillage. The model showed that it could be useful to simulate some of the potential trade-offs that may occur after implementation of specific N pollution mitigation measures (e.g. trade-offs in crop productivity and ammonia (NH3) volatilisation after implementation of measures that target a reduction in N2O emissions). In a validation exercise, simulated and measured yield and soil moisture showed reasonable agreement. Although the model showed discrepancies for monthly-averaged N2O fluxes, the peak after fertilisation application was reasonably well simulated. These results and the simplicity and user-friendliness of the model suggest that its structure is appropriate and, if properly calibrated for different soil types and weather conditions, it could be a useful model to be used in carbon footprint studies or to develop site-specific emission factors for current or future climatic scenarios. 相似文献

Industrial symbiosis (IS) emerged as a self-organizing business strategy among firms that are willing to cooperate to improve their economic and environmental performance. The adoption of such cooperative strategies relates to increasing costs of waste management, most of which are driven by policy and legislative requirements.Development of IS depends on an enabling context of social, informational, technological, economical and political factors. The power to influence this context varies among the agents involved such as the government, businesses or coordinating entities. Governmental intervention, as manifested through policies, could influence a wider range of factors; and we believe this is an area which is under-researched.This paper aims to critically appraise the waste policy interventions from supra-national to sub-national levels of government. A case study methodology has been applied to four European countries i.e. Denmark, the UK, Portugal and Switzerland, in which IS emerged or is being fostered.The findings suggest that there are commonalities in policy instruments that may have led to an IS enabling context. The paper concludes with lessons learnt and recommendations on shaping the policy context for IS development. 相似文献

This paper aims to assess both the opportunities and constraints for greywater (GW) reuse for irrigation. A case study was conducted for 25 users who used GW for small-scale irrigation for the period 1997–1999. Laboratory analyses of plant, soil, and GW were conducted. A focused environmental assessment was carried out to determine the viability of GW reuse for irrigation. The study concluded that GW reuse is feasible under specific conditions. An ECO-optimized reuse of process liquors addresses the financial gain and the effective use of resources. In processes that have a potential for process liquor recovery, the minimization of both economic and environmental burdens can be realised by an ECO-optimal design of reuse and recycling network (RRN).In this paper, a procedure for synthesizing such an RRN for a metal finishing process is investigated. The simultaneous analysis of environmental impact sensitivity (SAEIS) based on a superstructure approach, combined with multi-objective optimization is performed by mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP). This allows an “eco–eco” trade-off i.e. total annualized cost and environmental impacts are minimized simultaneously. By varying the weighting factor, different RRN alternatives were generated. A replacement of the standard and closed-loop system by these solutions, even for the environmentally friendliest case, yielded a reasonable cost saving on raw material's inputs. 相似文献
