When fitness returns or production costs vary between male and female offspring, selection is expected to favor females that
adjust offspring sex ratio accordingly. However, to what extent vertebrates can do so is the subject of ongoing debate. Here,
we explore primary sex ratios in 125 broods of cooperatively breeding purple-crowned fairy-wrens Malurus coronatus. We expected that females might adjust offspring sex ratio because this passerine species experiences considerable variation
in social and environmental conditions. (1) However, although helpers substantially increase parental fitness, females (particularly
in pairs and small groups) did not overproduce philopatric males (helper-repayment hypothesis). (2) Sex-ratio adjustment based on competition among individuals (helper-competition hypothesis) did not conceal helper-repayment effects or drive sex allocation on its own: while high-quality territories can accommodate
more birds, brood sex ratios were independent of territory quality, alone or in interaction with group size. (3) Additionally,
males are larger than females and are possibly more costly to produce (costly sex hypothesis), and (4) female offspring may benefit more from long-term effects of favorable conditions early in life (Trivers–Willard hypothesis). Nonetheless, large seasonal variation in food abundance was not associated with a consistent skew in primary sex ratios.
Thus, overall, our results did not support the main hypotheses of adaptive sex-ratio adjustment in M. coronatus. We discuss that long-term differential costs and benefits may be insufficient to drive evolution of primary sex-ratio manipulation
by M. coronatus females. More investigation is therefore needed to determine the general required sex differences in long-term fitness returns
for mechanisms of primary sex-ratio manipulation to evolve. 相似文献

Summary The effect of inter-litter competition on pup survival was investigated in pairs of female rats (Rattus norvegicus) living and breeding in the same environment. If a female gave birth when a 0- to 14-day-old litter was already present in the environment, her pups had a very high chance of surviving, similar to the situation in which no other litter was present. Moreover, the mother was likely to nurse communally with the mother of the 0- to 14-day-old litter. This communal nursing benefitted the newborn pups as evidenced by their being heavier at weaning than litters that were not nursed communally. In contrast, if a female gave birth when a 15-to 28-day-old litter was already present in the environment, her newborn pups were likely to die within 3 days postpartum, owing to the fact that they were often prevented from suckling at their mother's teats, resulting in milk deprivation, and were often beneath the older pups, resulting in physical trauma. These findings suggest that inter-litter competition is an important source of pup mortality when litters are born 15-28 days apart. The data are discussed in terms of the advantages of birth synchrony. 相似文献

Female mating behaviors are known to be sensitive to a variety of individual factors both external and internal to a female;
however, mating decisions are likely due to a suite of interacting factors. By independently manipulating female and male
diet in the wolf spider Rabidosa rabida and testing females across age groups, we demonstrate that, in addition to its independent effect, female nutritional condition
interacts with female age to influence female mating behavior. Overall, high-quantity diet (HD) females were more likely to
mate than low-quantity diet (LD) females. Within the LD females, older individuals were more likely to mate than younger individuals,
while within HD females, mating probabilities were equal across females of different age classes. With respect to mate choice,
only female age influenced the likelihood of mating based on male diet. Young females were choosier as they were more likely
to mate with HD males than LD males; in contrast, older females were equally likely to copulate with males of each diet treatment.
In addition, the likelihood of pre-sexual cannibalism was dependent on both female and male diet. High-quantity diet females
were more likely to cannibalize than LD females, and attacks were directed towards LD males most often. We discuss our results
in terms of costs versus benefits of female mate choice. 相似文献

Many populations of animals are fluid in both space and time, making estimation of numbers difficult. Much attention has been devoted to estimation of bias in detection of animals that are present at the time of survey. However, an equally important problem is estimation of population size when all animals are not present on all survey occasions. Here, we showcase use of the superpopulation approach to capture-recapture modeling for estimating populations where group membership is asynchronous, and where considerable overlap in group membership among sampling occasions may occur. We estimate total population size of long-legged wading bird (Great Egret and White Ibis) breeding colonies from aerial observations of individually identifiable nests at various times in the nesting season. Initiation and termination of nests were analogous to entry and departure from a population. Estimates using the superpopulation approach were 47-382% larger than peak aerial counts of the same colonies. Our results indicate that the use of the superpopulation approach to model nesting asynchrony provides a considerably less biased and more efficient estimate of nesting activity than traditional methods. We suggest that this approach may also be used to derive population estimates in a variety of situations where group membership is fluid. 相似文献

Rats (male and female) were exposed to 0.5 mg/kg and 1 mg/kg cadmium as cadmium chloride for 3 days and subsequently sacrificed for cadmium concentration and other biochemical variables indicative of hepatic and renal damage. The absorption of cadmium was supported by biochemical changes, which were significantly higher in females than in males. This could be due to higher rate of intestinal absorption of cadmium in females than males. Male and female rats both showed relatively higher cadmium concentration in kidneys than in liver. Female rats also showed the similar trend in tissue metal levels as compared to male rats. However, hepatic and renal histopathological observations showed that female rats suffered from severe hepatic injury like hydropic degeneration of hepatocytes, granulation, bile duct proliferation etc. In comparison to female rats, male rats did not show much remarkable changes. Renal damage was more prominent in female than male in the form of renal tubular damage; most of the tubular nuclei were pyknotic, congestion of the boundary of cortex and medulla etc. The results suggested that females were comparatively more vulnerable to the toxic effects of cadmium than males. 相似文献

Many aspects of Al metabolism in chronic renal failure are poorly understood. A longitudinal study of serum Al concentrations in predialysis patients and healthy control subjects revealed very high values during the autumn of 1984 and 1985. Renal Al clearance was low during the autumnal spike in serum Al but increased substantially when the serum Al concentration declined. A second study confirmed that by using citric acid as a chelator, the gastrointestinal absorption of Al from Al(OH)3 may be considerably augmented as reflected by increases in both serum Al concentrations and renal Al clearance. The individual differences in Al absorption in this study were large. The first study suggests the existence of an unidentified environmental factor, possibly water borne, with profound effects on Al absorption and excretion. The citric acid/Al(OH)3 experiment suggests that the existence of such a factor is likely. The implications of these results are not known.A histomorphometric study of bone biopsies from 138 hemodialysis and 66 predialysis patients without clinical evidence of Al related disease, revealed Al deposits after staining with aurin tricarboxylic acid in 78% of the biopsies from the former and 24% of the latter patients. Serum Al concentrations did not differ between predialysis and hemodialysis patients with Al positive biopsies. Stratification of the hemodialysis patients, who came from all parts of Norway, revealed that patients living in regions with slightly Al contaminated drinking water (Al <30 g/L) had lower serum Al concentrations than patients from regions with highly contaminated water (Al >100 g/L). The prevalence of Al-positive biopsies was the same in both regions. Patients with Al-positive biopsies did not differ in serum Al level from those with Al-negative biopsies within the same region. Predialysis patients with Al-positive biopsies had significantly higher serum Al levels than predialysis patients with Al negative biopsies.Stainable Al deposits are commonly found in the bone of patients with chronic renal failure. Cross-sectionally obtained serum Al concentrations do not reflect the prevalence of stainable bone Al in renal patients but are related to the degree of Al contamination of water of the region. 相似文献

Subordinate males are more likely to help if unrelated to the breeding female in cooperatively breeding white-browed scrubwrens 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Subordinates in communally breeding groups of birds usually help to provision nestlings, but in some species helping-at-the-nest
is facultative. In species in which groups usually contain relatives, subordinates either always feed young or are more likely
to do so when breeding dominants are close relatives, suggesting that benefits of helping collateral kin are important. In
other species, adult group members are unrelated to each other and males may only feed young if they have gained paternity,
showing that cooperation is related to the mating system. The white-browed scrubwren, Sericornis frontalis, is a communally breeding species in which most groups consist of a simple pair or a dominant pair with a subordinate male.
Subordinate males either fed nestlings in a given nest at a rate comparable to the dominants, or did not feed them at all.
Breeding groups usually formed through natal philopatry of males, so that about 80% of subordinates were closely related to
one or both members of the dominant pair. However, because of death and dispersal, 54% of subordinates were unrelated to the
resident female. Although subordinates with their mother fed nestlings in 48% of cases, they fed offspring in 75% of cases
if their mother had been replaced by an unrelated female, suggesting that their decision to help is influenced by the opportunity
to mate with the female. Supporting this conclusion, relatedness to the dominant male did not affect subordinate behaviour,
and genetic studies showed that subordinates often gained paternity if unrelated to the female. Thus, paradoxically, provisioning
nestlings is related to the opportunity for mating in a society in which there is natal philopatry and subordinates are usually
related to one or both members of the dominant pair.

Altered responses to female odors in parasitized male mice: neuromodulatory mechanisms and relations to female choice 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5

There is accumulating evidence that females may preferentially select parasite-free or -resistant males. Minimal attention
has, however, been paid to the mate preferences and responses of the parasitized male hosts themselves. Here, we considered
the effects of parasitic infection on male host mate responses, the neuromodulatory correlates of these responses, and the
relations of these responses to female mate choice. Using an odor “preference” test, we examined the effects of different
stages of an acute, sub-clinical infection with the naturally occurring, enteric, single host, protozoan parasite, Eimeria vermiformis, on the responses of male mice, Mus musculus domesticus, to the odors of estrous females along with the responses of uninfected females to the parasitized males. At 4 days post-infection
(non-infective, pre-patent stage) E. vermiformis-infected male mice showed a significantly decreased preference for the odors of estrous females, whereas at 10 days post-infection
(infective, patent stage) infected males showed a significantly increased preference for the odors of estrous females. Parasitized
males displayed no significant changes in their responses to the odors of non-estrous females, supporting effects on the reproductively
related responses of the host. In parallel, estrous females displayed a reduced interest in the odors of infected males. Least
interest was expressed in the odors of the patent, infective males, consistent with the avoidance of contagion. Using selective
opioid peptide receptor agonists and antagonists we found evidence that enhanced kappa opioid peptide (e.g., dynorphin) activity
was related to the decreased sexual interest of the pre-infective males, while augmented delta opioid peptide (e.g., enkephalin)
activity was associated with the enhanced responses of the infective males to females. We further showed that acute kappa
opiate administration reduced the responses of uninfected males to females and that uninfected females displayed modified
responses to the odors of uninfected males subject to acute modifications of opioid activity. We suggest that these differential
shifts in endogenous opioid activity in the parasitized males are associated with and, or related to alterations in neuro-immune
and endocrine functions. These findings show that parasitic infection can have, depending on the stage of infection and associated
neuromodulatory changes, either significant facilitatory or inhibitory effects on male host preferences for and responses
to females.

Systematic geochemical mapping based on sampling and analysis of surface soils (0–2 cm) has been carried out in several Norwegian
cities. The soils in the oldest parts of the cities are contaminated with metals (especially Pb) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
(PAH). Due to the fact that children are often in contact with surface soil, it was realized that special focus had to be
directed towards soils in day-care centers and playgrounds. The first mapping and remedy program was initiated in Trondheim
in 1996. Here, the importance of copper–chromium–arsenic (CCA)-pressure-impregnated wood in playing equipment as a pollution
source for soils was documented, and a process was started with the aim to ban this product. Soils from day-care centers in
the inner city of Bergen were polluted to a degree that required remediation in 45% out of 87 centers, mainly due to high
concentrations of Pb and benzo(a)pyrene. In Oslo, 38% of 700 day-care centers needed remediation due to soil pollution by
Pb, BaP, Cd, Hg, Ni and PCB. Removal of CCA-impregnated wood was necessary in more than half of the day-care centers The Norwegian
parliament has decided to investigate all outdoor playing areas in day-care centers, playgrounds and schoolyards in Norway,
starting in 2007 with day-care centers in the ten largest cities and five most important industrial areas. The Norwegian Institute
of Public Health has developed quality criteria for soils in day-care centers and playgrounds for As, Cd, Cr6+, Hg, Ni, Pb, zinc, PAHsum16, benzo(a)pyrene, and PCBsum7. The Geological Survey of Norway has developed guidance for mapping of soil pollution (sampling, chemical analysis and reporting)
in day-care centers. Especially the sampling strategy has been developed in the period 1996–2007, and the preferred sampling
strategy is to collect at least 10 samples of surface soil (0–2 cm) from (1) “original soil” on the site, (2) artificial man-made
“hills”, and (3) soils used for growing vegetables. A total number of 2,000 day-care-centres are to be investigated, and necessary
remediation should be completed before the end of 2010. 相似文献

Sea turtle populations worldwide suffer from reduced survival of immatures and adults due to fishery bycatch. Unfortunately,
information about the whereabouts of turtles outside the breeding habitat is scarce in most areas, hampering the development
of spatially explicit conservation plans. In the Mediterranean, recoveries of adult females flipper-tagged on nesting beaches
suggest that the Adriatic Sea and Gulf of Gabès are important foraging areas for adults, but such information could be heavily
biased (observing and reporting bias). In order to obtain unbiased data, we satellite-tracked seven loggerhead sea turtles
after they completed nesting in the largest known Mediterranean rookery (Bay of Laganas, Zakynthos, Greece). Three females
settled in the north Adriatic Sea, one in the south Adriatic Sea and two in the Gulf of Gabès area at the completion of their
post-nesting migrations (one individual did not occupy a distinct foraging area). The concordance of tracking results with
information from recoveries of flipper-tagged turtles suggests that the north Adriatic Sea and the Gulf of Gabès represent
key areas for female adult Mediterranean loggerhead sea turtles. 相似文献

Energy consumption is a major cause of air pollution in Beijing, and the adjustment of the energy structure is of strategic importance to the reduction of carbon intensity and the improvement of air quality. In this paper, we explored the future trend of energy structure adjustment in Beijing till 2020, designed five energy scenarios focusing on the fuel substitution in power plants and heating sectors, established emission inventories, and utilized the Mesoscale Modeling System Generation 5 (MM5) and the Models-3/Community Multiscale Air Quality Model (CMAQ) to evaluate the impact of these measures on air quality. By implementing this systematic energy structure adjustment, the emissions of PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO x , and non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) will decrease distinctly by 34.0%, 53.2%, 78.3%, 47.0%, and 30.6% respectively in the most coalintensive scenario of 2020 compared with 2005. Correspondingly, MM5-Models-3/CMAQ simulations indicate significant reduction in the concentrations of major pollutants, implying that energy structure adjustment can play an important role in improving Beijing??s air quality. By fuel substitution for power plants and heating boilers, PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO x , and NMVOCs will be reduced further, but slightly by 1.7%, 4.5%, 11.4%, 13.5%, and 8.8% respectively in the least coal-intensive scenario. The air quality impacts of different scenarios in 2020 resemble each other, indicating that the potential of air quality improvement due to structure adjustment in power plants and heating sectors is limited. However, the CO2 emission is 10.0% lower in the least coal-intensive scenario than in the most coal-intensive one, contributing to Beijing??s ambition to build a low carbon city. Except for energy structure adjustment, it is necessary to take further measures to ensure the attainment of air quality standards. 相似文献

Concentrations of mercury, cadmium, copper, zinc and iron were determined in the carapace, hepatopancreas, gills, tail muscle, ovary and eggs of 288 Norway lobsters, Nephrops norvegicus, caught in the Clyde Sea area, south of the Isle of Cumbrae, Scotland. Metal levels in males and females were examined separately in relation to size and the season in which the animals were caught.
Cadmium, copper and zinc concentrations were highest in the hepatopancreas whereas mercury and iron concentrations were highest in the gill. Levels of metals showed variations between months, with highest levels tending to occur during molt. Metal levels were influenced by lobster size with pronounced size-related increases in mercury levels in the tail muscle and cadmium levels in the hepatopancreas. Levels of several metals in the various tissues differed between the sexes. 相似文献

Summary To determine the effects of male mating status on female fitness, we compared the reproductive success, survival, and future fecundity of female Savannah sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis) mated to monogamous vs. polygynous males in a 5-year study on Kent Island, New Brunswick, Canada. The proportion of males with more than one mate varied from 15 to 43% between years and sites. Polygynous and monogamous males fledged young of equal size in every year of the study. Females who shared paternal care with other females laid as many eggs per clutch and clutches per season as monogamously mated females. In most years polygynously mated females showed no delay in laying a second clutch, and they suffered no reduction in fecundity the following year. Recruitment of a female's offspring into the breeding population was generally independent of her mating status. Fitness costs of being mated to a polygynous male were only apparent in one year of the study, during which females mated to polygynous males had higher over-winter mortality than those mated to monogamous males. That same year, young raised by polygynous males were only one-third as likely to survive to reproductive maturity (as inferred by returns) as those raised by monogamous males. A male's mating status had no effect on his own survivorship. A male's mating status did not necessarily reflect his contributions to raising nestlings, which may partially explain why monogamously and polygynously mated females had equal fitness. At 35 nests the proportion of food deliveries brought by individual males varied from 0 to 75%; on average, males brought fewer than 30% of all food deliveries. Yet parental care by polygynous males was no less than that of monogamous males, at least at the nests of their primary females. Secondary females tended to receive less male assistance during the nestling stage, but their reproductive success was indistinguishable from that of primary females. Females feeding young without male assistance made as many food deliveries/h as did pairs in which males brought at least 30% of all food deliveries. Unassisted females did not suffer diminished fledging success or produce smaller fledglings. The benefits of polygyny for male Savannah sparrows are clear: polygynous males recruit more surviving offspring into the breeding population than monogamous males. The fitness of females, on the other hand, appears to be unaffected by whether their mate was monogamous or polygynous except in occasional years. Polygyny may be maintained in this population by the constraints of a female-biased sex ratio, the inability of females to predict a male's paternal care based on his morphology or behavior, the poor correlation between a male's mating status and his assistance at the nest, and inconsistent natural selection against mating with a polygynous male.

In eusocial insects, polyandrous mating has the potential to reduce genetic relatedness of individuals within a colony, which
may have a profound effect on the stability and social structure of the colony. Here we present evidence that multiple mating
is common in both males and females of the desert leaf-cutter ant Acromyrmex versicolor. Females seem to have complete control over the number of matings, and mate on average with three males, even though the
sperm transferred in a single copulation is sufficient to fill the spermatheca. To determine whether there is a bias in the
representation of sperm from different mates in the spermatheca, females were mated to three or four males in controlled mating
experiments and were subsequently allowed to found colonies in the laboratory. Paternity analysis of the offspring by random
amplified polymorphic DNA analysis showed that all males that have been mated to a female successfully contributed sperm to
the production of her offspring. No significant asymmetry in sperm use was detected, suggesting complete sperm mixing. Different
hypotheses to explain polyandrous mating are discussed, and it is argued that the best hypothesis to explain polyandrous mating
and complete sperm mixing in A. versicolor is that utilizing genetically diverse sperm confers a selective advantage on females.

Aggression in female Red-Winged Blackbirds: A strategy to ensure male parental investment 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary Female Red-winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) are often aggressive towards conspecific females during the breeding season. We hypothesize that the function of female-female aggression in this species is to guard the nonshareable portion of the male's parental investment. The investment-guarding hypothesis predicts that a female should be more aggressive toward another female evincing interest in mating with the territory-owning male than toward a female simply perching within the male's territory. Results of mount presentations to females with active nests confirmed this prediction. Nesting females attacked a stuffed conspecific female mounted in a precopulatory, soliciting posture significantly more often than a mount in a normal, perched posture. The male's nonshereable parental care consists of provisioning his young, and most of this care is invested in the brood of his primary (first-to-nest) female. It is therefore predicted that primary females should be more aggressive than secondary (later-nesting) females. Female mount presentations also confirmed this prediction. Primary females attacked the soliciting mount significantly more often than secondary females. 相似文献

Male limitation of female reproductive success in a pipefish: effects of body-size differences 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary In the pipefish Syngnathus typhle, a species with exclusive male parental care, males limit female reproductive success because of their limited brood pouch space and long pregnancy. Sexual size dimorphism is absent in these 1-year-old animals but increases with age so that older females are larger than similarly aged males. Because fecundity is related to size in both sexes and increases more rapidly with body size in females than in males, the difference in growth increases female fecundity more, relative to male fecundity, as the fish get older. We therefore predicted that male limitation of female reproductive success is even more severe when all age classes are considered. To measure a female's maximum reproductive rate, she was provided with three males. Small 1-year-old females produced as many eggs, or produced eggs at the same rate, as a male of similar size could care for. Small females filled on average 1.06 males within the time span of one male pregnancy and actually produced on average 10 eggs fewer than needed to fill a similarly sized male. Large 2-year-old females, in contrast, produced on average a surplus of 149 eggs and filled 2.7 similarly sized males within the course of one pregnancy. The difference between females of the two size classes was highly significant. Males prefer to mate with larger females if given a choice. In nature sex ratios are equal, and males limit female reproductive success in the whole population. Therefore, small females are more severely constrained by mate availability than are larger females because males choose to mate with larger females.

Summary The addition of frequency dependence to the marginal value theorem (MVT) model of the dung fly (Scatophaga stercoraria) male's optimal copula duration makes virtually no difference to the predicted competitive optimum (ESS). However, this evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) version allows an explicit solution for the optimum. In a general sense, MVT optima will be close to their ESS equivalent when the cycle duration (expected time between the starts of two successive patch exploitations) is long relative to the plausible patch exploitation times. The optimal copula duration for male dung flies will depend on the ratio of virgin to mated females arriving at the droppings and on whether a male can discriminate between the two sorts of female. In nature, we found only an average of 3% of the total females arriving at the droppings to be virgins, rather less than had been estimated. This means that matings away from droppings (extra-dung matings) must be much commoner than previously suspected. Cumulative gains through copulation time rise much more steeply with virgins than with mated females, and so if males are able to discriminate, on the present model, we calculate that the ESS copula durations (at 20° C) would be around 42 min for non-virgins and 11 min for virgins. If they do not discriminate, the ESS is to copulate for a fixed duration of 41.5 min, i.e. very close to the optimum for mated females. The data indicate that copula duration does not differ for the two types of mating (mated females; virgins), suggesting that males cannot discriminate (or that the copula duration with virgins is not optimised to male interests). ESS copula durations with discrimination are almost entirely independent of the frequency of virgins in the population of females arriving at the droppings; without discrimination the optimal copula duration shifts between the ESS for mated females and that for virgins as the virgin frequency increases from 0 to 1. But at their naturally occurring frequency of only 3%, virgins can be ignored from calculations of optimal copula duration without significant loss of precision.Correspondence to: G.A. Parker 相似文献

Incubation feeding in snow buntings: female manipulation or indirect male parental care? 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Male snow buntings regularly feed their mates on the nest during the incubation period. We removed males from 7 females at the start of incubation (Early Widows) and from 7 others when the eggs hatched (Late Widows) to experimentally assess the effects of incubation feeding on the behaviour of females and the reproductive success of both parents. Early Widows spent significantly more time off their nests than Late Widows and Controls. As a consequence, Early Widows had significantly longer incubation periods and a significantly higher proportion of them lost two or more eggs during development. There was no difference between Early and Late Widows in any index of reproductive success measured during the nestling period although significantly earlier brood reduction suggests that Early Widows were in poorer condition than Late Widows. Since both parents benefitted from incubation feeding by increased hatching success and shorter incubation periods, we conclude that this behaviour is an adaptive form of indirect parental care by males and is not the result of female manipulation. 相似文献

Parental care plasticity is critical to understanding the ecological and evolutionary influence of nest predation on life history strategies. In birds, incubation imposes a trade-off between the requirements of females (i.e., food) and egg requirements (i.e., heat and protection from predators). However, studies on this topic are rare and usually restricted to species where the male feeds the incubating female, relaxing her incubation costs. Males and females can reduce their activity at the nest to avoid detection by predators. However, females could follow two alternative antipredator strategies: to delay their return to the nest to avoid attracting attention from the potential predator or to return to the nest as soon as possible to enhance nest concealment. In this study, we manipulated the perceived risk of nest predation of incubating common blackbirds (Turdus merula), a species without incubation feeding, to study female behavioral changes induced by nest predation risk. We show experimentally that female blackbirds can reduce their nest visits in the situation with higher nest predation risk. In addition, we confirm that females significantly delay their return to the nest in the presence of a nest predator, contradicting the nest concealment hypothesis. However, our results could be interpreted as a passive antipredator response (to minimize clues given to predators) or as an active antipredator response (to search for predators to expel them from their territories). 相似文献
