Coryphopterus nicholsi is a temperate marine goby that occupies rock rubble in protected subtidal areas along the Pacific coast of NOrth America. In field populations, fish of all sizes and both sexes are found in the same habitat. All observed fish over 25 mm standard length defended space during both the reproductive and the non-reproductive seasons, with territory size being directly correlated with fish size. There was peripheral overlap of territories, particularly between adjacent adult conspecifics of different size classes, but also with smaller fish that had territories centered in the interstices of larger territories. However, zones of overlap were used at different times by space-sharing fish so that defended areas remained temporally discrete. Access to areas of overlap appeared to be determined by dominance rank. More dominant (usually larger) fish used areas of overlap at will; the defense and use of shared areas by less dominant fish was contingent upon the absence of larger fish. Social organization in C. nicholsi appears to be defined by a combination of territorial behavior and dominance relationships among adjacent individuals, permitting the coexistence of all members of the population under circumstances of limited habitat availability. 相似文献

Until the last decade it was assumed that most marine species have pronounced gene flow over vast areas, largely because of their potential for dispersal during early life stages. However, recent genetic, modeling, and field studies have shown that marine populations may be structured at scales that are inconsistent with extensive dispersal of eggs and larvae. Such findings have stimulated the birth of new studies explaining the mechanisms that promote population structure and isolation in the oceans, in the face of high potential for dispersal. Here we study the vertical and horizontal distribution of cod (Gadus morhua) eggs in relation to small-scale circulation and water column hydrography in a coastal location of southern Norway. Previous studies conducted in this region have shown that cod populations inhabiting fjord locations, which are on average 30 km apart, are genetically differentiated, a remarkable outcome considering that Atlantic cod have pelagic egg stages and long pelagic larval duration. We document that cod eggs are found in greater abundance in shallow water layers, which on average are flowing up the fjord (away from the open ocean), and in the inner portion of the fjord, which is subject to lower current speeds compared to the outer or mouth of the fjord. Eggs were found to be neutrally buoyant at shallow depths, a trait that also favors local retention, given the local circulation. The same patterns held during two environmentally contrasting years. These results strongly suggest that population structure of Atlantic cod is favored and maintained by a balance between water circulation and egg characteristics. 相似文献

The effect of the spatial arrangement of habitat patches on the survival of resident populations were considered in a stochastic model using population parameters appropriate to Peromyscus leucopus. The 34 possible arrangements of connections among five otherwise identical patches were simulated in order to determine the survival probabilities and population sizes.The main findings are that populations in completely isolated patches have lower survival probabilities than those in patches that are connected to other patches, are connected to the survival probabilities of populations in connected patches increases with the size of the largest geometric figure of which the patch is a part. The expression of protogyny often differs among populations of a single species. The humbug damselfish, Dascyllus aruanus (Linnaeus), typically lives in spatially discrete groups of several individuals around live coral colonies and has been reported to be protogynous. The size and sexual composition of groups of this species, however, vary with the size of the coral patch or the degree of coral cover. The present study examined gonadal development and sexual pattern in a population of D . aruanus living in continuous coral-cover habitat. Fish were collected in Tumon Bay, Guam (13°31′N; 144°47′E), during a 2-week period in July and August 1996. Reflecting their distributions, small fish (n =54) were collected at depths of 1–2 m over continuous Porites spp. patches, and large fish (n =56) were collected at depths of 2–3 m over a continuous Acropora spp. patch. Gonadal development was examined histologically. Gonads of D . aruanus first developed an ovarian lumen and primary-growth stage oocytes. From this ovarian state or from more developed ovaries with cortical-alveolus stage oocytes, some gonads developed into testes through degeneration of oocytes and development of spermatogenic tissue. Developing spermatogenic tissue only occurred in gonads having pre-cortical alveolus stage oocytes, and the size of individuals with gonads of this type overlapped mainly with the size range of individuals with gonads containing only pre-vitellogenic oocytes (i.e. immature females). This suggested that functional female-to-male sex change was rare or absent in this population of D . aruanus . Moreover, the different habitat distributions of small and large fish suggest that sex determination in immature fish occurs in the absence of adults. 相似文献

2005年5月至10月,应用分形几何学的原理和方法对三江平原典型小叶章种群地上生物量与株高的空间结构分形关系进行了研究。结果表明,典型草甸小叶章和沼泽化草甸小叶章的地上生物量与株高存在良好的静态分形关系,其分形维数(D)是对地上生物量在各器官中积累规律的表征;二者地上生物量与株高的对数值线性相关,相关系数分别介于0.579~0.919和0.655~0.914之间(P<0.01,D值介于1.778~3.414和2.238~3.924之间,各时期地上生物量均以株高的幂函数形式积累;二者地上生物量与株高静态分形关系D值的季节动态基本一致,其变化均符合抛物线模型(P<0.05),而局部波动又与地上生物量的变化有关;生长季内,二者地上生物量与株高动态分形关系的D值分别为2.749和2.738,说明地上生物量的积累具有自相似性,符合幂函数增长的分形生长过程。研究还表明,仅用D值来刻画不同植物地上生物量的空间积累与展布存在一定的局限性,它只能用于测度和描述一种植物体生物量的空间积累及其对空间的占据,而一般不能用于植物间相应指标的类比;导致不同植物D值差异的原因可能与植物生长所处生境、外在因素以及模型参数(C)有关。 相似文献

Summary In aquarium experiments, the two marine gobiid fish species Pomatoschistus minutus and Gobius niger were allowed to build nests and to spawn in the presence and absence of a predator (cod, Gadus morhua); behind a glass wall the predator was kept where it could be clearly seen by the gobies and vice versa. P. minutus showed no difference in number of nests or number of spawnings in the different treatments; approximately half of the males built nests, and the females spawned in half of those nests. G. niger, on the other hand, responded differently to the simulated predation risk. No nests were built in sight of the predator, whereas in the absence of predators, half of the males built nests and received eggs. The G. niger individuals in this experiment were 2–3 years old. However, when comparing the reproduction of G. niger of different age in the presence of a predator, older individuals (4–5 years) spawned, whereas younger (2–3 years) did not. No difference in vulnerability towards predators was found between equal-sized P. minutus and G. niger. The optimal behavior during the breeding season must depend on prospects of survival, based both on maximal lifespan and vulnerability to predation. 相似文献

Summary Wild colonies of Myrmica rubra L. were sampled and cultured in the laboratory to assess their reproductive capability. Correlation analysis was then used to relate the reproductive performance to a number of worker population characteristics. This revealed an association between the magnitude of gyne production and the proportion of nurses in the population. The absence of big workers also increased gyne production.Artificially composed cultures were then made and used to confirm greater resistance of nurses and small workers to queen domination.It is suggested that rapidly growing colonies will have higher proportions of young nurse workers refractory to queens and able to deliver the food necessary for gyne production. Activity levels are modulated by trade-offs between reducing predation risk and the need to move in order to find food or mates. Because these trade-offs affect males and females differently, many species show sex-specific movement, dispersal patterns, and spatial navigation capacities, with the sex that gains the most from territory ownership often dispersing less. Unlike mammals and birds, sex differences in movement among fishes remain poorly studied, and the connections between tests of movement propensity in the laboratory and in the field are rarely made. Here, we examine the differences in movement between male and female round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) in both laboratory and field settings. This fish species is invasive in North America and currently undergoing further range expansions. In the laboratory, round goby males were more active and explored a novel environment more readily than did females. A large-scale mark–recapture study in Lake Ontario over two years revealed that males moved more than females between years, but there were no within-year sex differences. Thus, round goby display male-biased movement patterns, providing a comparison point to dispersal patterns in other taxa. Understanding sex-specific movement of round goby in the field will also help predict dispersal and population dynamics, both in areas where round goby have already become established and where they are continuing to invade. 相似文献

The effects of the following modes of density-dependent control of population growth: density-dependent birth rate, adult survival rate, juvenile survival rate are compared based on the mathematical model of population dynamics. It is shown that the most efficient mechanisms limiting population size are decreasing with the growth of the adult population birth rate and/or the decreasing survival rate of the offspring with the increase in their number. However, these same mechanisms are responsible for oscillations of the population size and its chaotic change. The density-dependence of the adult survival rate is not efficient in constraining the population growth, but it can substantially limit the magnitude of oscillations of the population size. 相似文献

The distribution of the sand crab Ocypode cursor (L.), as indicated by the number of burrows, was studied for 2 years in a 50×50 m sand beach area in northern Israel. A definite relationship was established between the distribution pattern from the seashore inwards towards the sand dunes, and the degree of sand moisture as it changed seasonally. During autumn, more crabs were found at a distance of 15 to 25 m from the sea where sand moisture was about 14%. At the beginning of winter crabs dispersed evely, disappearing with advancing winter. Crabs reappeared in spring, although in smaller numbers, dispersing in a pattern similar to that in autumn. At the beginning of summer and later on, more crabs appeared and concentrated closer to the sea (5 to 10 m). The population structure was analysed directly by measuring the crab's dimensions, and indirectly by counting burrows and measuring the diameter of their openings. Direct analysis revealed two distinct sizeage groups: smaller crabs 0.5 to 3 cm long, and larger ones over 4 cm long. The smaller burrows were inhabited by the first group and were mostly found closer to the sea; the second group was found more landwards. Three main types of burrow shapes are described. 相似文献

The local densities of heterospecifics and conspecifics are known to have profound effects on the dynamics of many benthic species, including rates of settlement and early post-settlement survivorship. We described the early life history of the Caribbean coral, Siderastrea radians by tracking the population dynamics from recently settled planulae to juveniles. Through three years of observation, settlement correlated with the abundance of other benthic organisms, principally turf algae (negatively) and crustose coralline algae (positively). In addition, adult density showed independent effects on coral settlement and early post-settlement survivorship. Settlement rates increased across low levels of adult cover and saturated at a maximum around 10% cover. Early post-settlement survivorship decreased with adult cover, revealing structuring density dependence in coral settlers. The earliest life stages of corals are defined by low survivorship, with survivorship increasing appreciably with colony size. However, recent settlers (one-polyp individuals, < 1-year-old) are more likely to grow into two-polyp juveniles than older single polyps (> 1-year-old) that were delayed in their development. The early benthic phase of corals is defined by a severe demographic bottleneck for S. radians, with appreciable density-dependent and density-independent effects on survivorship. For effective management and restoration of globally imperiled coral reefs, we must focus more attention on this little studied, but dynamic, early life history period of corals. 相似文献

Colonies of Pocillopora spp. containing the crab Trapezia digitalis were collected from Hawaii in summer of 1979 and of 1980. Individuals of T. digitalis in Hawaii vary extensively in coloration of the carapace: crabs were separated into phenotypic classes by their degree of carapace reticulation. When presented with two females of different phenotype, males preferentially paired with the female which was similar to them in reticulation. The genetic population structure of T. digitalis was unusual by comparison with other species of Trapezia. Previously reported homozygote excesses at esterase-4, hexokinase-1, phosphoglucoseisomerase, and general protein-2 cannot be explained by the single-locus Wahlund effect, since there was not significant genetic differentiation among phenotypic classes, as measured by Wright's F
ST
statistic. There was significant variation among classes in allele frequencies at a fifth locus, hexokinase-2. Two pairs of loci were in significant gametic disequilibrium. Gametic disequilibrium was not detected in seven other species of Trapezia. It is suggested that multi-locus genetic analysis and an increased geographic sampling range are needed to determine the genetic population structure of T. digitalis in relation to observed variation in coloration. 相似文献

Genetic variability and the distribution of this variability was examined in two size classes (1 to 2 mm and 9 to 10 cm valves) of the mussel Mytilus californianus. Marked homozygote excess was observed at two polymorphic loci (Lap and Pgi), and the excess was far greater in juveniles than in adults. Adult spiny lobsters (Panulirus argus) were collected from nine locations throughout the tropical and subtropical northwest Atlantic Ocean and examined for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation. 187 different mtDNA haplotypes were observed among the 259 lobsters sampled. Haplotype diversity was calulated to be 0.986 and mean nucleotide sequence-diversity was estimated to be 1.44%; both of these values are among the highest reported values for a marine species. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) and phenetic clustering both failed to reveal any evidence of genetic structure within and among populations of P. argus. The present data are consistent with high levels of gene flow among populations of P. argus resulting from an extended planktonic larval stage and strong prevailing ocean currents. 相似文献

To investigate the relative cost of protogynous versus protandrous sex change we induced sex change in each direction in Gobiodon histrio (Gobiidae) and then compared growth, body condition and biochemical condition between sex-changed and non-sex-changed fish in treatment and control groups. Sex change in each direction was induced by establishing pairs of adult males and pairs of adult females on isolated coral colonies. Heterosexual pairs were used as controls. For both males and females, growth and body condition did not vary between fish that changed sex and those that did not. The relatively low cost of sex change, compared to the likely costs of searching for a mate of the correct sex, appears to explain the evolution of bi-directional sex change in coral-dwelling gobies. Lipid concentrations in the liver of males and females that changed sex were reduced by similar amounts (34% and 41%, respectively) compared to male and female controls that did not change sex. Therefore, changes in biochemical condition were approximately equal for fish that sex change in each direction and cannot explain the unequal frequency of sex change in each direction in natural populations of G. histrio. 相似文献

Molecular phylogeny and population structure of tideland snails in the genus Cerithidea around Japan
Phylogenetic relationships and genetic population structures were analyzed for tideland gastropods in the genus Cerithidea around Japan on the basis of partial sequence of the mitochondrial COI gene. Large genetic divergence was shown between individuals of Cerithidea cingulata in the southern Ryukyus and those in the central Ryukyus and the Japanese Islands. Haplotypes of C. cingulata from the Japanese Islands were paraphyletic with the exclusion of a monophyletic group from the central Ryukyus. Genetic differentiation of C. cingulata was also detected between Amami-Oshima Island and Okinawajima Island. No genetic divergence was found between Cerithidea rhizophorarum in the Japanese Islands and its subspecies C. rhizophorarum morchii in the Ryukyu Islands. The lack of genetic divergence of Cerithidea largillierti between continental China and Japan suggests relatively recent migration between the Japanese Islands and the Asian continent. For all three Cerithidea species distributed in both the Japanese Islands and the Ryukyu Islands, the Tokara Gap and the Kerama Gap were shown to have acted as barriers to the dispersal. 相似文献

Previous studies have suggested that the high diversity associated with the Norfolk seamounts (Southwest Pacific) could reflect endemism resulting from limited dispersal due to hydrological phenomena. Crustaceans of the family Galatheidae are thoroughly studied in the New Caledonia economic zone permitting the analysis of species distribution pattern between the New Caledonia slope and Norfolk ridge seamounts. This analysis has shown that, qualitatively, the same species are sampled on seamounts and on the New Caledonia slope. Local endemism was never detected. However, on each seamount, and therefore on a small surface, a very high number of species are usually sampled, suggesting that seamounts are biodiversity hot spots. Then, to evaluate whether the seamounts constitute patches of isolated habitat, we explore the pattern of genetic diversity within several species of crustaceans and gastropods. Analysis of the intra-specific genetic structure using the mitochondrial marker COI reveals that populations of two Galatheidae species (Munida thoe and Munida zebra), polymorphic for this marker, are genetically not structured, both among seamounts and between the seamounts and the island slope. The genetic structure over a similar sampling scheme of two Eumunida species (Chirostylidae, the sister family of Galatheidae) and a planktotrophic gastropod (Sassia remensa) reveals a similar pattern. Population structure is observed only in Nassaria problematica, a non-planktotrophic gastropod with limited larvae dispersal. Thus, the limitation of gene flow between seamounts appears to be observed only for species with limited dispersal abilities. Our results suggest that the Norfolk seamounts rather than functioning as areas of endemism, instead, may be highly productive zones that can support numerous species in small areas. 相似文献

This study tested experimentally whether clutch size and the cost of care affect filial cannibalism in the sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus. Evolutionary models of filial cannibalism suggest that egg eating has evolved as a way for the male parent to prolong his
breeding season. These models assume that eggs function as an alternative energy source for the constrained parent. I manipulated
clutch size by allowing males to mate with either one or two females, representing a small and a large clutch, respectively.
The addition of a small male shore crab, a common egg predator, increased the cost of care. I quantified fat reserves as a
measure of the condition of guarding males. Males who did not build nests had lower fat reserves than males who built nests,
suggesting that males with low energy reserves do not start breeding. Males with small clutches lost their nest to the crab
more often than males with large clutches. Neither filial cannibalism nor the amount of eggs eaten were affected by the treatments.
Males who consumed eggs had a higher fat percentage than males who did not eat eggs. The result that males with small clutches
lost their nests to the crabs supports the idea that eggs are defended only if the benefit from continued care will outweigh
the cost and that males therefore are sensitive to the trade-off between present and future reproductive success.
