At the inter-specific level, per offspring investment (POI), degree of abbreviated development, and lecithotrophic potential all increase with increasing latitude and freshwater penetration among crustaceans. These traits are considered adaptations to conditions of decreasing growth potential. We hypothesise that this relationship between POI and abbreviated development also occurs at the intra-specific level. We studied the caridean shrimp, Palaemonetes varians, to investigate the hypothesis that under food-limited conditions, higher POI enables development through fewer larval instars. Under starvation stress, larvae from broods of greater POI (measured as hatchling brood average dry weight, DW) generally developed through fewer larval instars. With increasing starvation period, larval development time increased, whilst larval growth rate, juvenile DW, juvenile carbon mass, and juvenile carbon:nitrogen (C:N) ratio all decreased. Larval development time generally decreased with increasing brood average dry weight. In contrast, larval growth rate, juvenile DW, juvenile carbon mass, and juvenile C:N ratio all increased with increasing larval brood average DW. The relationship between POI and larval instar number (abbreviation of development) reported here is consistent with that at the inter-specific level and supports the concept that macro-ecological trends in development modes at the inter-specific level may be driven by selection occurring on POI at the intra-specific level.  相似文献

The Tailed Jay Graphium agamemnon is one of the attractive papilionid butterflies that enliven the environment of Visakhapatnam. It occurs throughout the year. It lays eggs singly on young leaves of the mast tree Polyalthia longifolia var. pendula (Annonaceae). The eggs take 3-4 days to hatch. The larvae go through 5 instars over a period of 15-16 days. The pupal period is 13-14 days. The total period from egg to adult emergence spans over 33-36 days. Based on this short life cycle, and larval and pupal development success studied every month, this butterfly can be multivoltine with a minimum of 7-8 broods in a year. Both CI and GR decreased with the age of larva, their average figures being 3.78 and 0.43 respectively. AD values are high (average 92%) and decreased through successive instars. Both ECD and ECI followed a similar pattern with an increase from instar I up to II, then a decrease up to IV and again an increase in instar V and the highest value is with fifth instar. Adults frequently visited flowers (12-35 flowers in a min) spending 1.0 to 3.2 seconds on a flower. The nectar concentration ranged between 16 and 58%. Peak foraging activity mostly fell between 0900-1000 h. The proboscis received pollen in most of the floral species visited, thus satisfying one of the characteristics of butterfly pollination. Being a fast and strong flier it is treated as "high energy" pollinator promoting cross-pollination.  相似文献

The complete life cycle of Pycnogonum litorale Ström was observed under laboratory conditions. At 15?°C and a 16?h light:8?h dark photocycle, the duration of embryonic development from oviposition to egg-hatching varied from 32 to 111?d. The onset of egg hatching ranged from 32 to 81?d after oviposition in different egg batches, and the period between the first and the last hatch within a single egg batch varied between 16 and 57?d. The larval period, consisting of five larval instars, lasted between 66 and 113?d. Juvenile development required seven (exceptionally 8 or 9) moults and lasted between 263 and 400?d. The average interval between successive moults in juveniles increased with increasing size from 24 to 82?d. Though females did not moult more often than their male conspecifics, they reached a size from 8.5 to 11.0?mm (average 10.1?mm) while adult males measured only 7.0 to 8.5?mm (average 7.7?mm). At low temperatures (2?°C) moulting was almost completely inhibited. After raising the temperature to 6?°C, the moulting frequency increased to a rate almost as high as at a constant temperature of 15?°C. Moulting was also retarded by starvation and accelerated by subsequent feeding. Adults lived for up to 9?years without further moults, with several periods of mating and oviposition at irregular intervals. In combination with previous long-term field observations, the present results provide a more complete picture of the life cycle of P. litorale in a natural habitat. The great variation in the duration of the different developmental stages, the ability to survive periods of cold and starvation, and the longevity of the adults are important for the survival of pycnogonid populations under changing environmental conditions.  相似文献

The spider crabHyas araneus (L.) was collected from the North Sea in winter 1986–1987 and reared in the laboratory from hatching of the Zoea I (ZI) through the first juvenile instar (CI). Within a given moult cycle, individuals of the same age were sampled in intervals of 2 (ZI, ZII, CI) or 3 d (megalopa) for analysis of dry weight (W), carbon (C), nitrogen (N), hydrogen (H), protein, DNA, and RNA. Lipid was calculated from C. Biomass, growth rate and nucleic acid contents showed high variability during each moult cycle and between instars. Instantaneous growth rates of C were high in postmoult and intermoult, and low in the premoult period of each moult cycle. A shift was observed from high rates of lipid accumulation in the postmoult and intermoult stages to proportionally increasing protein accumulation during late premoult (ZI), or throughout a major part of the remaining moult cycle (in all other instars). DNA was accumulated throughout the ZI and ZII instars, but decreased in late premoult megalopa. It increased again from late intermoult through intermediate premoult in juveniles. RNA increased continuously during ZI and ZII, and decreased in the megalopa, almost to levels that had been found immediately after hatching. In juveniles, variation in RNA followed closely those in DNA. Cell multiplication (expressed by DNA increase) dominated over increase in cell size (defined by the C/DNA ratio) during the zoeal instars and in postmoult through early intermoult in the megalopa and CI. When specific (C-related) RNA values and RNA/DNA ratios were compared with instantaneous growth rates in C and N, no general correspondence was detected. The only significant relationship between specific RNA values and instantaneous C or N growth rates was found in the megalopa. The same held for the relationship between the RNA/DNA ratio and growth. Here, in addition to the megalopa, a correspondence with C growth was also found in the CI instar. Our results suggest that variation in nucleic acids may provide useful insights into mechanisms of growth on the cellular level (cell multiplication vs cell enlargement). However, lack of general correlation with variation in growth rates ofH. araneus larvae shows that the use of nucleic acids as a measure of growth is probably based upon too simplistic assumptions; it may not yield reliable predictions, when growth is associated with developmental events.  相似文献

Summary Changes in response to attack and the tendency to aggregate were examined in the six larval instars of the buckmoth, Hemileuca lucina (Saturniidae). In response to simulation of attack by a parasitoid and of biting by a predator, early instars (I, II, and III) exhibited defensive behavior much more often than escape behaviors, whereas late instar larvae (IV, V, and VI) usually resorted to escape rather than defend themselves. The situations in which attacked larvae were most likely to stimulate other group members to respond were: second and third instar larvae thrashing in response to simulation of a parasitoid or headrearing in response to simulation of a biting predator; and fourth, fifth and sixth instar larvae dropping in response to either stimulus. An index of reaggregation indicated that first instar larvae had difficulty reaggregating; second, third and fourth instar larvae reaggregated quickly; and fifth and sixth larvae dispersed. As larvae developed, the change from predominantly defense to escape behaviors paralleled the decline in tendency to aggregate.  相似文献

When endoparasitoid wasps oviposit into hosts which have already been parasitized (= superparasitism), this results in potentially lethal interlarval competition. For solitary species, the decision to lay additional eggs should therefore be based on the probability of superparasite survival in any superparasitized host. In this study, in vitro contests staged between three larval instars of Venturia canescens Grav. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) reveal that the age difference between competitors affects the outcome of interlarval competition. Three parameters were used to assess parasitoid performance: the number of fights initiated, the number of bites inflicted, and the duration of each bite. When fighting takes place between two first instars, then both competitors were found to be evenly matched. However, at greater age differences, first-instar competitors appeared to win more fights than their larger second instar rivals. The advantage shown by younger competitors is most pronounced in contests staged between first and third instar larvae. These findings are consistent with the increasingly high levels of conspecific superparasitism shown by V. canescens in the first 5 days after initial host attack, suggesting that this parasitoid can deploy her use of deliberate superparasitism in an adaptive way.  Using the number of segments of pleopod rami as a marker of instar number, the population structure (instar composition) of the mesopelagic gammarid amphipod Cyphocaris challengeri was investigated by monthly samplings from May 1997 to April 1999 at a station off southwest Hokkaido, Japan. Laboratory-rearing experiments were also conducted to establish the relationship between the number of segments of pleopod rami and instar number, and to estimate the growth pattern of this gammarid based on the intermolt period and molt-increment data. Stratified sampling in the field (0 to 200 and 200 to 400 m depth strata) showed this species occurred mainly at 200 to 400 m depth during the day. Instar analysis indicated that C. challengeri has 12 instars in females and 11 instars in males. Based on observations of secondary sexual characters, Instars 1 to 6 were designated juveniles (Instars 1 to 3 occurred in the marsupia of gravid females); in males, 7 to 9 were immature and 10 and 11 were mature, while in females 7 and 8 were immature and 9 to 12 were mature. Off southwest Hokkaido, Instar 4 (just released from a female's marsupium) was found throughout the year, with a peak abundance occurring in April to July of each year. A sequential development of Instar 4 to 9 (youngest adult instar) through the year was observed. Generation length (i.e. the time required to grow from Instar 4 to 10) was estimated from a laboratory-obtained growth curve to be 216 to 584 d at the in situ temperature range (2 to 5 °C), which is consistent with observations on field populations. Specimens older than Instar 9 were rare in the field and could not be used in laboratory-rearing experiments, so longevity could not be estimated. Eggs were oval and measured 0.6 mm (large diameter). Brood size ranged from 20 to 65. Comparing the present results with those of epipelagic hyperiid amphipods, the nearly identical growth rates together with the production of fewer but larger eggs seen in C. challengeri appear to reflect to the typical life mode of deep-living pelagic crustaceans. The adults of the common mormon butterfly Papilio polytes Linn. feed on a variety of floral species. The larval food plants in the study area included Citrus limon and Murraya koenigii both of the family Rutaceae. The eggs are laid singly, and the hatching time is three days. The larvae pass through five instars. The larval growth is directly correlated with the quantity of food consumed. The AD (approximate digestibility) values decreased from first instar to the last, whereas the ECD (efficiency of conversion of digested food) and ECI (efficiency of conversion of ingested food) values increased, thus bearing an inverse relationship with AD. The development time from egg to adult is 28-30, giving 11-12 generations in a year, but with better breeding during August-February. Thus P. polytes is multivoltine.  相似文献

Ethyl alcohol, acetone, and petroleum ether extracts of three plant species belonging to three different botanical families [Strychnos nux-vomica (Loganiaceae), Euphorbia lathyrus (Euphorbiaceae), and Datura stramonlum (Solanaceae)], a chemical insecticide; profenofos and their combinations were tested against second and fourth instars of Spodoptera littoralis under lab conditions. Results revealed that the ethanol extract of S. nux-vomica was the most effective among all plant extracts, where the corrected mortality% were 92, 81, 58, and 27% to 2nd instar and 89, 74, 34, and 11% to 4th instar at concentrations 0.5, 0.25, 0.125, and 0.0625%, respectively. Calculated LC50's were 0.11, 0.22, and 0.34% to 2nd instar and 0.17, 0.37, and 0.52% to 4th instar for ethanol, petroleum ether, and acetone extracts, respectively. Acetone extracts of all plants were of lower effect. The chemical insecticide profenofos displayed higher efficacy than plant extracts (LC50 = 0.002 and 0.003% for S. littoralis 2nd and 4th larval instars, respectively). The co-toxicity factor reached 76 and 60 when mixing S. nux-vomica + profenofos and D. stramonlum + profenofos at ratio 1:1 against S. littoralis 2nd instar larvae, thus indicating a potentiating effect. While treatment of the 4th instar larvae by the same mixtures resulted in a co-toxicity factor below 20 at all mixing ratios indicating, only, an additive effect against this instar.  相似文献

Eggs of Thrissocles species are found in surface plankton in the Ernakulam Channel (Cochin Harbour)during February to May 1967. The eggs hatch within 24 h. Empty egg shells have characteristic apertures, through which the embryos have emerged; yolk is resorbed 36 h after hatching.Larvae (36 to 72 h groups) assemble at the lighted region of the aquaria during day-time and scatter to different levels at night. Larvae older than 72 h show no inclination to assemble as before. All larvae died between 96 and 110 h after hatching. Many batches of eggs were reared in the same medium, and all of them behaved as described. The results indicate that the right type of food was available in the aquaria for larvae up to a period of 72 h. The volume of water also appears to have a bearing upon the survival rate and longevity of the larvae since, in small aquaria, more larvae died at an early stage.  相似文献

Abundance and life-cycle features of the mesopelagic hyperiid amphipod Primno abyssalis (formerly P. macropa) in the Oyashio region, western subarctic Pacific, were investigated using samples collected between July 1996 and July 1998. P. abyssalis was collected throughout the entire survey period, with abundance peaks occurring in spring to autumn. While all maturity stages of males and females were observed throughout the study period, the peak reproduction season was in summer. Instar analysis based on the segment number of the pleopod rami indicated that hatched juveniles molted 10 times before becoming adult males and 13 times before becoming adult females. Judging from the dry and ash-free dry weights of each instar, males and females continued to feed throughout the final instar stage. Based on cohort analysis of seasonal samples and laboratory observations on molting frequencies, growth in body length of P. abyssalis was linear with time, and estimated generation lengths were 2.3-3.8 years for females and 1.4-1.9 years for males. Brood size of females ranged from 66 to 337 and increased with increasing female body length. Lifetime fecundity, calculated as the sum of six successive broods, was 1,004. Compared with P. abyssalis in the southern Sea of Japan, those in the Oyashio region have a larger number of adult instars (six versus five for females, three 3 vs one for males), a lower growth rate (0.014 mm day-1 vs 0.021 mm day-1), and mature earlier (instar 13 vs instar 15 for females; instar 10 vs instar 11 for males). These characteristics are considered to be advantageous life-history traits to counteract higher niche competition within the mesopelagic community and higher predation pressure by mesopelagic fishes in the Oyashio region than in the Sea of Japan.  相似文献

The population structure and life cycle of the mesopelagic ostracod Conchoecia pseudodiscophora Rudjakov in Toyama Bay, southern Japan Sea, were investigated using a time-series of samples collected during 0 to 500 m vertical hausls with twin-type Norpac nets (0.35 and 0.10 mm mesh) over one full year (1 February 1990 to 30 January 1991). Additional samples were also collected with a single-type closing Norpac net (0.06 mm mesh) to examine the vertical distribution patterns of eggs and all instars of this species. The proportion of gravid females present indicated that reproduction of C. pseudodiscophora continues throughout the year, but peaks in April–July. Eggs and Instars I and II were distributed below 500 m, while the more advanced instars were most abundant in the 350 to 500 m stratum by both day and night. Based on the abundance peaks of each instar in the time-series samples, development times were estimated to be 2.5, 4, 3, 7 and 11 mo for Instars III, IV, V, VI, and VII, respectively. Thus, a total of 30 mo is required for newly spawned eggs to hatch and reach adulthood. Stomach-fullness indexes revealed no seasonality in the feeding activity of any instar stage, but that feeding activity was low in older instars, particularly in adult males. The present results are compared with those for a few other ostracod species, in an attempt to characterize the life cycle of C. pseudodiscophora inhabiting waters of subzero temperature in the mesopelagic zone of the Japan Sea.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that larval size in the acorn barnacle Balanus eburneus Gould (Cirripedia Thoracica) varies in relation to food availability. In March–November 1980, and March–July 1981, larvae were obtained from adult Balanus eburneus collected in the Newport River, North Carolina, USA. Carapace length and width of larvae reared at three different food concentrations were measured. Mean naupliar instar size was independent of food concentration. Mean size of the cypris instar increased with increasing food level. Greater cypris size could be attributed to increased food reserves in the preceding naupliar stage, and was coinciden with inmarked increase in metamorphic success. Variation in instar size remained constant or declined during naupliar development, but increased sharply at the molt to the cyprid. Naupliar size regulation involved: (1) conservation of a molt increment specific for each naupliar-naupliar molt, (2) an inverse relationship between premolt size and the molt increment during the first five naupliar instars, and (3) an increase in the precision of the molt increment at the molt to the sixth naupliar instar. Experimental evidence implies that size regulation in Balanus eburneus limits variation about a fixed final naupliar size (e.g. volume). Measurement of naupliar size, accumulated energy reserves, survival and development time, and cypris metamorphic success indicated that naupliar cuticular growth is the most conservative feature of larval development. The data suggest that maximum naupliar size is limited by escalating metabolic costs during development, while minimum naupliar size is limited by size-related feeding effectiveness.  相似文献

Changes in the chemical composition of developing dolphin (Coryphaena hippurus) eggs and prefeeding yolksac larvae were determined in order to estimate probable dietary requirements of first-feeding larvae. Daily dry matter, protein nitrogen (PN), non-protein nitrogen (NPN), lipid, gross energy content, fatty acid and amino acid profiles from Day 1 to Day 2 eggs and Day 1 to Day 3 larvae were compared. Lipid was the primary endogenous energy source accounting for the daily caloric deficit through both the egg and larval stages, except over the day of hatching. The catabolism of lipid by embryos (0.078 cal d–1) was greater than that by yolksac larvae (0.036 cal d–1). The higher demand for energy by embryos was related to a greater rate of protein synthesis during the egg stage. The ratio of PN:NPN increased during egg development without change in total nitrogen content, but was constant throughout the yolksac larvae period. The lipid content per embryo did not decrease over the hatching period (Day 2 to 3, postspawning). However, there was a loss in amino acid content not totally accounted for by sloughing of the chorion at hatching. This loss, as protein, accounted for 0.053 cal of gross energy, which represented 70% of the total estimated energy needs of the fish over this period. Loss of non-essential amino acids (25%) was higher than that of essential amino acids (13%). Proline and tyrosine accounted for 32% of the total loss of amino acids at this time. The only preferential use of fatty acids over any period was a small but significant drop in the content of C22:6n-3 prior to the onset of feeding (Day 5, postspawning). It is speculated that the pattern of energy-substrate use of first-feeding dolphin larvae will reflect the pattern of endogenous energy use during the egg and prefeeding yolksac larval stages. Diets or feeding regimens with lipid as the primary energy source, and containing a fatty acid profile similar to that of eggs or yolksac larvae, should be useful in culturing this species, at least during the early feeding stages.  相似文献

The importance of salinity experienced during embryonic development and initial larval biomass on larval growth was studied in the South American estuarine crab Chasmagnathus granulata. Ovigerous females were maintained at three salinities (15, 20, and 32‰) from egg laying to hatching of zoea l. Larvae from all treatments were reared under constant conditions of photoperiod (12∶12), temperature (18°C), and salinity (first instar at 20‰, subsequent instars at 32‰). Biomass was measured as dry weight, carbon, and nitrogen content per individual at egg laying, hatching of zoea l, premoult zoea l, and zoea 4, and in 8-day-old megalopa. From hatching to premoult zoea 4, biomass was higher for larvae from prehatching salinities of 15 and 32‰. There was a significant positive correlation between biomass at hatching and at premoult zoea l and zoea 4. Accumulated biomass during zoeal stages tended to be higher for larvae from broods with higher biomass at hatching, although this trend was not always significant. Zoea 4 either directly metamorphosed to megalopa or moulted to zoea 5, following, respectively, a short or long developmental pathway. The proportion of zoea 4 that followed the long pathway was negatively correlated with biomass of zoeal stages. Biomass at hatching was correlated with biomass of megalopae developed through the short pathway, although it was not correlated with the accumulated biomass at this stage. Megalopae developed through the long pathway (i.e. metamorphosed from zoeae 5) had higher biomass than those from the short pathway. The present results suggest that prehatching salinity and initial egg and larval biomass can be very important for larval growth. Published online: 9 August 2002  相似文献

Caddisfly larvae (Stenopsyche marmorata) instar V, periphyton, sediment and river water at a non‐contaminated upstream site, a metallic contaminated downstream site, and industrial wasterwater which caused the metallic contamination were collected once a month for 21 months. Nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) concentrations in these samples were measured. Significant serial variations of the 4 metal concentrations in the larvae showed a seasonal tendency at the upstream site but not at the downstream site. The larvae more clearly indicated the influence of industrial wastewater than periphyton. As the larvae of Stenopsyche marmorata could be collected throughout the year, this larva is useful for monitoring trace metal contamination in rivers.  相似文献

The fish Caranx kalla of different size groups (2 to 18 cm body length) is present during various calender months of the year off the Madras coast (S. India). C. kalla displays a definite progressive shift in growth during successive months; the fish grows from 2 cm (September) to about 18 cm (August) over a period of 12 months. The highest (47%) or lowest (11%) incidence of a monogenean gill parasite Gastrocotyle indica has been observed in the C. kalla size groups 2.0 to 3.9 cm or 16.0 to 17.9 cm; however, the maximum specific density of 10.9 parasite/infested fish was observed in the size group 14.0 to 15.9 cm. Small fish (2.0 to 3.9 cm) carry only larvae (58/100 fish); larger hosts (4.0 to 5.9 cm) larvae (45/100 fish) and juveniles (8/100 fish); individuals of the 6.0 to 15.9 cm size group harbour larval, juvenile and adult stages of G. indica. Fishes of more than 16 cm carry only adult parasites. The level of parasitization is higher on the male hosts (30% incidence; 5 parasites/infested male) than on the females (25% incidence; 4 parasites/infested female). The highest incidences of larval, juvenile and adult G. indica occur in September, February, and May, respectively; the parasite seems to live for 1 year. The host requires a period of about 8 months to acquire immunity against infestation by G. indica or copepod parasites.  相似文献

The structure and ultrastructure of the photoreceptors of several life history stages of the ontogenetically migrating lophogastrid crustacean Gnathophausia ingens were examined. The younger instars of this species live in a much brighter light field than the older instars, and this difference is reflected in differences in their visual systems. The shallowest free living individuals (instars 3 and 4) possess a superposition eye with almost no clear zone, which minimizes the light shared between ommatidia and reduces the sensitivity of the eye. A progression to superposition optics with a large clear zone, usually associated with night-active or deep-living species, occurs as the animals move deeper in the water column. Regional differences within the eye are also evident, with a largely nonexistent clear zone in the dorsal region and a large clear zone in the ventral region in the eyes of instar 5 animals, the first instar to move to deeper depths. The deepest living instars (10–12) possess superposition optics with a large clear zone throughout the eye, and are significantly more sensitive to light than the younger, shallower instars.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The present research aimed to determine the lowest levels of three heavy metals (Pb, Cd and Cu) to which the larvae of Southern House Mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus are susceptible in water. The study also aimed to investigate the effects of these heavy metals on the development of Cx. quinquefasciatus at concentrations set by Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) as permissible levels for liquid industrial effluents. The 2nd instar larvae of Cx. quinquefasciatus were exposed to different concentrations of Pb, Cd and Cu and their effects on oviposition preference, egg hatching rate and larval development were studied. The LC50 values of Pb, Cd and Cu were 12.6, 6.3 and 2.6?ppm, respectively. Gravid female mosquito adults deposited a significantly lower number of egg rafts in containers containing 0.50?ppm Pb or 1.0?ppm Cu in water. Each of the heavy metals in water resulted in significantly (p?<?0.05) lower egg hatching rate, prolonged time to pupation, lower pupation rate, prolonged time to adult emergence, lower adult emergence rate and higher female to male ratio. It is concluded that the 2nd instar larvae of Cx. quinquefasciatus are susceptible to Pak-EPA permissible levels of Pb, Cd and Cu in municipal and liquid industrial effluents.  相似文献

The Alcyonacean octocoral Alcyonium siderium Verrill and the sea anemone Metridium senile (L.), the only common perennial zooplanktivores on shallow (16-m depth) subtidal rock walls in much of northern New England, USA, are of similar heights and overlap in their habitat and microhabit distributions. The coelenteron contents of both species were sampled at four-hour intervals over a diel cycle and were compared to zooplankton available in the water at 1 to 5 cm from the rock wall, the height at which the cnidarians held their feeding tentacles. Prey in coelenterons of A. siderium were significantly smaller (means of 256 to 345 m), and those in coelenterons of M. senile were equal to or slightly greater in length (means of 415 to 1006 m) than the available zooplankton. The diets of A. siderium and M. senile differed significantly from each other and from the available zooplankton. A. siderium showed strong positive electivites for ascidian larvae and for foraminiferans, and strongly negative electivities for most crustaceans. M. senile had strong positive electivities for barnacle cyprids, ascidian larvae, and gammarid amphipods, and strong negative electivities for invertebrate eggs, foraminiferans, calanoid and harpacticoid copepods, and ostracods. Electivities may reflect tentacle avoidance or escape by motile prey as well as predator preference. Substratum-associated organisms (e.g. demersal crustaceans, larvae of benthic invertebrates) were the most common items in the diets of both species, suggesting a tight benthic food web, similar to the situation for coral reef anthrozoans which rely on reef-generated zooplankton. A. siderium ate large numbers of ascidian larvae which, as benthic adults, compete for space with A. siderium and can overgrow small colonies. Predation on the larvae of a competing species may alleviate competition by decreasing the competitor's recruitment.  相似文献
